For thousands of years Ben had been living his life cursed thanks to his father. Every few days he was found by a monster and killed only to resurrect and go through it all again. Every time it was agony but Ben knew that was the whole point. His father was a sadistic asshole who had wanted to punish him for trying to save the man he loved by stealing magic from Heaven and bringing it to Earth. Ben’s father had never had the guts to show his face and talk to him in person, instead he had hidden away and left others to do his dirty work. The guy was an awful father and to this day they had never met but Ben hated him regardless. He had grown used to the way it worked, if he tried to fight what was going on it just made the pain that much worse when he eventually did die and that was something that Ben had grown tired of pretty quickly. Some of the monsters that came after him were too difficult to stop so he’d just had to put up with it. He had tried to find someone who could break his curse so many times but each time had ended in disappointment. Ben had thought that it would be the same when he got to Mystic Falls but he had still wanted to try anyway and now he was beyond glad that he had done. Jed and Ric finding him had been a blessing in disguise, Ben hadn’t wanted anyone to get hurt because of him so he had been wary about letting anyone get close to him but he had felt an instant connection with Jed and everything had changed from there. Ben still felt bad that Jed had died saving him but he understood why Jed had done it. The guy loved him and Ben loved him in return so he knew that he really couldn’t blame him for it but he knew that he wanted to make sure that nothing like that happened again. Ever since he’d brought Jed back something had changed, now Jed’s parents were trying to help find a way to break his curse too and the Squad was splitting their time between helping Raf find a way to control his cravings and trying to find a way to break his curse. That day Josie had asked him to meet her, Hope and some of their other friends in front of the school and since he and Jed had been studying together, they headed out there together. “Hi, what’s going on?” he asked, pausing for a moment as he looked round at them all. “Is everything okay?”JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed had been studying with Ben when Josie asked Ben to meet her and the others in front of the school. They decided to head on outside together since he was already with Ben. He found Josie, Hope, and MG standing outside of the school as promised and Ben took the liberty to ask the question that was repeating in Jed's mind over and over again. "Yeah, everything is perfect, actually," Hope said with a half-smile resting on her lips. "Jo, would you like to do the honors of telling them about what we found?" Hope's attention drifted to her girlfriend, offering her a gentle smile. Jed tilted his head slightly to the side in confusion, unsure what was happening right now before his attention drifted to MG who looked happy and at ease which definitely relaxed him a bit. He trusted the squad that they had good news to tell them.
"Relax, man. Why do you look so constipated? It's good news, promise." This time, it was MG's voice, his eyes were focused on Jed. "Huh? Oh, it's because we're outside. I'm just concerned about, well..." Jed trailed off as he made a gesture for monsters. "Don't worry, we're here. If anything happens, we'll take care of it." Hope's voice soon broke the silence as she offered Jed a gentle smile which he returned. "Okay, just 'cause I bought a new phone and if I turn into a crispy and severely burnt chicken nugget again, I'm gonna be pissed about it." MG let out a startled laugh before he covered his mouth and looked around him, looking a little sheepish about the fact that he had laughed at such a traumatic memory. "Wow, you're laughing at that? MG, I never knew you were so heartless. It's such a traumatic memory for me and you're out here laughing about it." MG's expression turned into a shocked one before it quickly turned apologetic. "I'm so sorry, man. I'm so sorry, oh my god. I didn't mean to laugh like that." MG quickly apologized before Jed's lips stretched to form a grin that confused MG. "I'm just messing with you, man. I've been making puns about it ever since it happened. It's chill, really." MG offered Jed an incredulous look before shaking his head, mumbling something about Jed being a cruel dumbass under his breath which only made him chuckle some more. "Guys, knock it off." Jed pressed his lips into a thin line and stopped shortly after, his eyes relaxing on Josie as he waited for her to explain what was happening.

So much seemed to be going on at the moment, the squad was busy trying to find something that would help Raf control his bloodlust and they and Jed’s family were also trying to help find a way to break his curse. Ben had seen the way that people had rallied around each other before when he had fought in the war but this was something else entirely. This wasn’t people rallying around because their lives were on the line, they were doing it because they wanted to help and that was something that Ben had never experienced before. In the past whenever anyone had helped him it had been because he had agreed to do something for them in return. He had always held up his end of the bargain but so far no one had been able to help him break his curse. He knew that Josie and the others were more motivated than anyone else had ever been considering that Jed had died during one of the attacks that had been meant for him but Ben knew that they were his friends and they wanted to help him as well. “Any idea what Josie wants to see me about?” he asked Jed as they headed outside, not sure whether Josie had said anything to him that morning or not. That morning had been pretty normal so far, he and Jed had ended up studying together and it had to be said that it was much easier studying with Jed when they were at the school than it was when they were in Jed’s room. Ben knew that he could have gone on his own to meet Josie but he would only end up filling Jed in about it later and they had been spending time together so he knew that it made sense for them to go together. As they reached the front of the school and saw Josie, Hope and MG standing there, Ben’s expression turned to one of confusion and that only deepened when Hope said that everything was perfect. “Everything is perfect? Do you know something we don’t?” he asked, unsure what to think when a knowing smile formed on Josie’s face. Hope had asked Josie if she wanted to explain and Josie gave her girlfriend’s hand a gentle squeeze as she nodded but then MG was speaking and Ben’s expression softened as Jed said he was concerned since they were outside. Without even thinking about it he let his hand rest against Jed’s cheek as their eyes met. “Hey, I’m not going to let anything happen to you,” Ben assured him. He wasn’t worried about himself, he only wanted to make sure that Jed and the others were safe considering it had been a few days since the last monster attack. “I think your friend might get a bit suspicious if we went back and had to get you a second new phone so soon after the last one,” Ben chuckled, not at all phased by the joke that Jed had made since he was used to them by now but he quickly realised that the others weren’t when Jed started teasing MG. Ben let him have his fun for a while before laughing as Jed revealed that he was just messing with him. “You’re so cruel,” he teased. “I told you that you were better off saving those jokes for when it’s just us,” he grinned before turning to look at the girls. “What’s going on Jo? What did you find?” Ben asked, doing his best not to get his hopes up after he had been let down so many times before. “We haven’t found a way to break your curse yet but we think we’ve found a way to stop the monsters from finding you,” Josie explained as she pulled the bracelet out of her pocket and held it up to show them. “We need to test it out but the bracelet is enchanted to cloak you from any monsters that your curse makes want to kill you,” she continued and Ben studied the bracelet carefully. “You really think this could work?” he asked, hardly able to believe it that they might have found a solution after so long. “As long as you wear this, it should. It’s like MG’s daylight ring, it will only work while you’re wearing it,” she explained and Ben nodded, knowing that if it worked then he would never take it off. “How do you plan on testing it?” he asked, already getting the feeling that they had something in mind. – I freed myself from words never said –
“Well, if I had to make a guess, it would be about your curse. I know they’ve been looking into it along with finding a way to help Rafael control his thirst.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following. “Guess we will see in a second. The part that’s weird is the fact that we’re meeting outside, though.” Jed pointed out with a small hum following, unsure what to make of that part but he had a feeling he was about to see what it was about in just a second. “Yeah, I believe we do,” Hope said with a grin resting on her lips as she gave her girlfriend the chance to explain everything to Ben, but she did stop when she heard Jed’s next words. Jed’s expression softened at Ben’s words, his hand resting on top of Ben’s as he offered back a quick nod of his head, trusting Ben’s words. “I know.” He had no doubt in his mind about that.
Jed laughed at Ben’s words before he nodded his head a few times. “He would definitely ask too many questions.” He said with a grin forming on his lips not long after. He decided to tease MG who took the bait all too easily and started apologizing because he really did think that he had managed to trigger Jed while in actuality, he had been making jokes about the incident ever since it took place. “I so am.” Jed agreed with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after. “It’s just so fun to tease him like this,” Jed added a moment later with a small smirk tugging at the corner of his lips as his eyes relaxed on his friend who looked sheepish about the fact that he had fallen right into Jed’s trip. “Sorry, sorry. I’ll stop now.” Jed added a moment later with a quick nod because right now, they needed to focus on what it was that the squad members wanted to talk to Ben about.
“Are you serious?” Jed’s eyes widened, surprised to hear the fact that they had found a way to stop the monsters from coming after Ben. “Holy shit, that’s great!” Jed added a moment later, his surprise still evident in his expression. “Yup, just don’t take it off. It should buy us some time to work on finding a way to break your curse permanently.” MG said with a quick nod of his head. “It minimizes the risks of a certain werewolf from turning into a fiery wolf.” He added a moment later, barely fazed when Jed pretended to let out an offended gasp.
“That would be through me,” Hope said as she held up her hand. “I’ll transform into a wolf. If I attack you, it’s not working. If I don’t, then it’s definitely working. My money is on the latter, though.” Hope reached up to take her hair down as she began shrugging her jacket off. “Woah, Woah, so there’s a chance that it doesn’t work? Sorry, but, I’m not letting my boyfriend get mauled to death.” Jed said with a frown tugging at his features. Hope’s eyes softened as she kept her eyes on Jed. “Hey, I won’t actually hurt him. I promise. If it doesn’t work, Josie will put me to sleep before I attack him.” Hope promised, her lips stretching to form a soft smile. Jed seemed to calm down for a moment before his attention relaxed on Ben. “You know, you don’t have to do this, okay? We don’t have to test it out. You can just wear it like that, why do we even have to test it?”

“They have, they’ve been great,” Ben admitted. He had thought that helping Raf was the more pressing thing for their friends to focus on at the moment but instead they had been splitting their time between trying to help Raf and trying to help him. Ben knew that he would always be grateful to them for that, he wasn’t used to having people in his corner like this but now he knew what it was like to have people like that around him he knew that he didn’t want to go back to the way things used to be. “That’s unnerving me a little as well,” he nodded. It wasn’t like they had been locked away in the school ever since the dragon attacked, Ben had been out and about living his life as normal for the most part but it had been a few days since the last monster had tracked him down so he knew that it was just a matter of time before another one found him so he knew that he didn’t want to tempt fate too much if he could help it. A smile touched Ben’s lips as Jed said that he knew he wasn’t going to let anything happen to him and Ben let his forehead rest gently against his boyfriend’s. “I’ve got you,” he said softly. Jed had already died once and Ben knew that he wasn’t going to let that happen again. “I guess we’d better keep you and your new phone out of the line of fire then, huh?” Ben asked, a laugh escaping his lips as he looked over at Jed. His friend had been really helpful when it came to getting them set up with new phones but Ben knew that they couldn’t afford to have the guy start asking too many questions. He was human and one thing Ben had learned along the way was that it wasn’t a good idea for too many people who weren’t a part of the supernatural world themselves to know about it. That was when bad things started to happen and none of them wanted that. “Be nice,” Ben chuckled, giving Jed’s hand a gently squeeze as he said it was so much fun to tease MG like that. Ben knew that Jed was only messing around and MG seemed to know that but the last thing any of them wanted was for it to become awkward. Ben could hardly believe what he was hearing when Josie said she thought they had found a way to stop the monsters coming after him. “It sounds way too good to be true,” he admitted. Ben knew that he didn’t want to end up getting his hopes up only to eventually be disappointed but he couldn’t deny that this time something felt different and for the first time he had real hope that it would work. “I won’t. As far as I’m concerned it will be permanently glued to my wrist,” Ben nodded, knowing that there was no way that he was going to take it off and risk having the curse continue in full force. “We definitely won’t want that,” he added with a grin as MG said it minimized the risk of Jed becoming a fiery wolf. As soon as Hope started speaking Ben realised that he should have known she would have offered to test it for him. “We don’t know if the curse will actually affect you so we’ll have to try it both ways, won’t we?” he asked. Hope was the Tribrid, the only one of her kind and while other species were affected by his curse he wasn’t sure if she would be. As Jed spoke, Ben’s expression softened as he turned his attention to his boyfriend. “Hey, it’s okay,” Ben assured him, his voice trailing off as Hope said she wouldn’t actually hurt him. Jed seemed to calm down a little at that for which Ben was truly grateful. “If we don’t test it we won’t know if it actually works. I’d rather have the certainty that it does rather than the risk that you or someone else might get hurt,” he said gently, stealing a kiss from Jed before putting some distance between them so that he wouldn’t get hurt. Taking the bracelet from Josie, Ben studied it for a moment before nodding to Hope. “I’m ready when you are,” he admitted, knowing that it would probably be best to check that Hope was affected by his curse first before he slipped the bracelet on and they were able to test it properly. – I freed myself from words never said –
Jed was a little antsy, to be honest. He was worried about the fact that they were meeting outside of the school and since Ben was still very cursed, it was only a matter of time before a new creature (or old, just a creature in general, to be honest) finds Ben and it won't be pretty for anyone involved. Jed wasn't concerned about dying as much as he was concerned about putting his family through that pain again. He would much rather avoid dying and avoid watching Ben die, as well. "Yes, please. I still haven't finished this annoying level of candy crush and if transferring into a new phone makes me reset, I will actually lose my mind." Jed said with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after. Playing phone games was actually one of the things that he liked to do whenever he wasn't spending his free time with either Ben or his pack. When Ben told him to be nice, he quickly nodded his head. "Yes, sir." Jed made a face as soon as the words fell from his lips. "That sounds really intimate for some reason. Please forget I said that." Jed could see MG making a face from his peripheral vision. Honestly, he felt the same way.
"This is honestly great. You guys are honestly geniuses." Jed was pretty proud of them for finding a way to stop the monsters from coming after Ben. It should give them the time they desperately need to find a way to break Ben's curse permanently without feeling the need to constantly look over their shoulders.
"Okay, my theory is, your curse works a lot stronger when someone is in their "monster" form like it did when the student shifted into a dragon. The urge to hurt you was too strong for her to ignore and I guess this is why Jed hasn't, you know, hurt you yet. He's in his human form. But that's not to say that it doesn't work on people who don't shift into flying creatures or were-creatures. Honestly, there's literally nothing on how your curse actually works so this is all just a theory in my head, and what a better way to see if that theory is correct than to test it, right? Just keep the bracelet off just in case I'm immune to your curse." Hope explained the theory that she had in mind. It was only a theory and she knew that soon enough, she'll be able to test it and see if it was actually true. "I'll also lower the spell protecting our school, just in case I'm immune." It didn't take long for Hope to render the spell protecting their skill useless. It shouldn't be long before a monster answers the call of Ben's curse.
Jed released a soft sigh, his eyes relaxing on his boyfriend again before he slowly nodded his head. "Okay, be careful, though. If you die, I'll..." Jed frowned when he couldn't think of a threat right off the bat. "Make you listen to Justin Bieber on repeat." Jed looked over at MG who gently grabbed his arm to make him step away, his hand still lingering on Jed's arm and he wondered if the hold was to assure him or stop him from butting in.
"Ben." Jed's voice broke the tense silence, then called out again which made Hope and MG turn to look at Jed who frowned in confusion. "Seriously, Jed, we're not gonna hurt him." Hope said with a soft sigh falling from her lips, frowning at the way Jed's expression remained one of utter confusion. "I literally didn't say a word unless you guys can hear my thoughts or something." Then, the voice happened again. It strongly resembled Jed's and this time, they were all looking at Jed whose lips never even moved.
"Okay, I hear it too. What the hell is that? That's really goddamn freaky." Jed said, a frown immediately tugging at his features as he looked around him. Then, his eyes relaxed on an individual. Walking closer to them. That person had long black hair (which was a standard for horror movies which honestly didn't help the current situation), a white gown, and bloody hands. She looked young, probably around high school age. To make matters worse, it looked like the girl's jaw was unhinging, sharp teeth on full display as she got closer and closer. "I think we have our test subject right here. Ben, whenever you're ready." Hope looked at the bracelet then up at Ben, nodding her head as she murmured a spell to send the creature flying back when she got too close. But it didn't seem to keep her down for long as she got up and started walking toward them again. "I think this is a crocotta. I read about them in one of the books in the library. I didn't think I'd ever see one since they disguise themselves so well as typical humans." MG spoke up from where he was standing, keeping guard and also keeping Jed from doing anything stupid. "Well, the grudge here needs to stay away, or else she won't get a fourth movie," Jed spoke up as his eyes flashed red as he took a step forward.

Ben knew how hard everyone had been working to find a way to break his curse but the truth was that he’d had to live with this for such a long time that he knew better than to get his hopes up. He’d had people promise to help him in the past only to end up being disappointed and even though he knew that their friends were more motivated to help him than anyone else had ever been he was starting to wonder if it was even possible to break his curse. Ben could see that Jed was nervous about them being outside together right now and for a moment he started to wonder if it might have been better if he’d left Jed to continue studying without him but Ben knew his boyfriend and he was pretty sure that Jed wouldn’t have let him do that anyway. “Of course you’re thinking about Candy Crush, I swear you’re addicted to that game,” Josie laughed and Ben couldn’t help but smile. Jed didn’t tend to play it that much when they were together but he knew Jed liked it and it sounded like he played it a lot. As Jed said “yes sir” before speaking again, it was Ben’s turn to laugh. “I don’t know, I kind of liked the way you said it,” he chuckled, sending a playful smile in Jed’s direction. “You are, thank you guys,” Ben nodded, unable to deny that he was grateful that they had even managed to get this far with it. They didn’t know whether or not it was going to work just yet but they would find out soon enough and even if it didn’t then they had already made it further than anyone else had. Ben wanted to find a way to break his curse so badly and he hoped that now they might be a step closer to that. “It sounds like a pretty good theory to me,” Ben admitted. It was along the lines of the way that he had been thinking of his curse as well so he was glad that they were on the same page with that. “I’ve been attacked by people who don’t shift before but attacks like those have been much rarer. It has mostly been people who do shift or just monsters in general,” he explained, remembering a few of the ones that had attacked him that hadn’t had the luxury of shifting between different forms. Ben nodded as Hope told him to keep the bracelet off for now just in case she was immune to his curse. She was nature’s loophole so he knew that there was a chance that it might not affect her and that would defeat the purpose of testing it out. “Alright,” he nodded as Hope said that she was also going to lower the spell that protected the school. That part made Ben more nervous than anything else since it meant that the other students wouldn’t be protected either but he knew that it would only be for a short time so he hoped that it wouldn’t matter. “You know how I feel about Justin Bieber, that’s enough incentive for me not to die,” Ben said, hoping to lighten the mood a little. He didn’t want Jed or their friends to see him die if anything went wrong but even if he did he knew that he would resurrect the same way that he always did and Ben hoped that that would bring them all some comfort at least. This was the first time he’d let himself have a real life with a boyfriend he loved and friends he could always count on so no matter what happened he knew that he wasn’t going to let himself lose that. Ben had been looking at Hope when Jed’s voice had said his name and he turned to look at his boyfriend. “Is everything okay?” he asked as Hope said that they weren’t going to hurt him. Jed didn’t seem to know what was going on but then his voice came again and it was clear that it hadn’t come from Jed. “It’s very freaky,” Ben agreed, looking around them to see where the voice had come from. It wasn’t long before they all spotted the person heading in their direction and Ben’s expression turned to one of surprise. “That was quick even for my curse,” he admitted as he watched the person walk closer. Nodding as Hope told him to try the bracelet whenever he was ready, Ben couldn’t deny that he was surprised at how quickly the person got back up after Hope sent them flying. He didn’t know their name but he had seen creatures like this before although this one seemed really young. “Creatures like these are rare but I’ve come across them before. They’re much stronger and quicker than this one is letting on so stay back,” he warned as Jed took a step forward, not wanting him to get hurt. With his eyes fixed on the crocotta, Ben slipped the bracelet onto his wrist and watched as the girl seemed to pause for a moment before shifting back. “It worked,” Ben breathed, unable to deny that he was surprised. The girl kept making her way towards them but now she looked normal and she didn’t look like she wanted to kill him. “What’s your name?” Josie asked, clearly curious about the girl now. “Tara,” the girl said, her eyes fixed on Josie for the moment. “I don’t know what you all did but thank you, I don’t know what came over me but something was drawing me here to kill him,” Tara added as she glanced over at Ben. It was as her gaze came to rest on him once more that something changed and a moment later she had the same murderous look in her eyes as before and she moved faster than Ben could comprehend. Before he knew it she was standing in front of him and her teeth were showing once more as her hand tore through his chest and ripped his heart out. Ben stayed standing for a moment more before his body fell and Josie let out a horrified cry as he hit the ground hard, a spell already on her lips to put the girl to sleep. JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed wanted to look guilty when Josie pointed out his addiction to Candy Crush but, instead, he turned to look at Josie. "Hey, no Candy Crush slander. That game is actually super fun. Also super helpful when you can't sleep 'cause you're worried about your pack but also can't leave home at two in the morning to go check on them without looking mentally deranged." With his status as an Alpha, he doubted a time will come when he's actually not concerned about the well-being of his pack. Staying with his family had many benefits, but the downfall was the fact that his pack didn't live with him under the same roof. A surprised chuckle fell from his lips when Ben pointed out that he liked the way he'd said it. "Well then, I'm open to saying it more," Jed said with a grin tugging at the corner of his lips before he quickly remembered that they weren't alone.
Jed couldn't help but feel anxious as his eyes moved from Ben to Hope, then back again. Jed relaxed a little at Ben's words. "So stay alive, then," Jed said with a gentle smile resting on his lips. He glanced around him real quick, just to make sure that they were alone but then again, he knew that if there were any monsters, he would be able to pick up on their sounds and scents, so he told himself to relax until the weirdest thing happened when he suddenly started hearing his own voice when he was certain that he didn't say a word.
Crocotta. That's what MG called it – her – and it was nothing short of freaky, to say the least. Even the name assigned to the species. Jed watched the way it easily seemed to get up, looking barely affected by Hope's attack which only happened to slow the girl down from hurting Ben. Jed took a step forward to do something but he felt MG's hand on his chest again, holding him back from doing anything which immediately made him frown. He understood why MG was trying to hold him back because the last time he took action in regards to Ben's curse, he got burned beyond recognition and ended up dying in front of Ben, and Josie. "Listen, dude, I appreciate you trying to protect me but seriously, stop it." Jed placed his hand on top of MG's to lower it before his attention drifted to Ben as he slipped on the bracelet and almost immediately, the girl seemed to lose that look of pure homicidal intent.
Huh.
The bracelet definitely seemed to work.
Until it didn't.
"We should keep her away, just in case," Jed called out from where he was standing as he took a small step forward, his eyes relaxing on the girl who introduced herself as Tara. Jed noticed the way she looked at Ben and for a moment, Jed caught a glimpse of something that instantly had him moving forward but again, he felt a hand stopping him from doing anything stupid which resulted in the girl getting too close to Ben. "Ben–!" It was already too late as he heard the awful sound of her tearing into his chest with her hand and pulling out his heart, letting it drop to the ground. "No!" Jed rushed to Ben's side almost immediately, his heartbroken eyes taking in Ben's deceased form. He lifted his hand to gently rest it on Ben's cheek, his head dropping in silent grief that was mixed with anger.
"I'm so sorry, Jed, I–" Hope spoke up, her voice was soft and full of guilt for not being able to save Ben in time. "What the hell happened to not letting anything bad happen to him, huh?" Jed snapped in retaliation. A growl slipped past his lips as he stood up from where he was kneeling beside Ben's deceased body to make his way over to the unconscious girl, his eyes seemingly carrying the same look that she directed at Ben not long before she had killed him. MG was there again to stop him, his hand resting against his chest. "Jed, no, man. Don't do this. She had no control over what she was doing. Look, maybe the bracelet just needed time to work." MG tried to reason with Jed whose eyes were glowing bright red which even made him feel a little intimidated. "If you hadn't stopped me, I would've been able to stop her. Do you realize that? I told you, MG. I don't need your protection and I sure as hell didn't ask for it." Jed shoved MG's hand off his chest before he turned around to make his way back to Ben's side because he wanted to be there when Ben revived. "At least let us help you take him back inside." This time, it was Hope's voice, she still sounded sad but he only shook his head.
"No. You've helped enough, don't you think? I got him." Jed mumbled under his breath, still sounding upset as he gently picked up Ben's body to take him inside of the school, ignoring the way multiple people stopped and stared, looking shocked but Jed didn't seem to care as he took Ben to his room to let him lay on the bed before he pulled up a chair and sat down too with a soft sigh falling from his lips as he reached out for Ben's hand, holding it in his own.

“You seem to have a thing about wanting to leave home in the middle of the night to check on people,” Josie teased, remembering the way that Jed had wanted to do the same thing after she’d helped him realise how he really felt about Ben. Ben simply squeezed Jed’s hand gently. He knew that his boyfriend worried about his pack and the truth was that was one of the things that Ben loved about him. Jed had admitted that he’d been a bully for a long time but Ben had never seen that side of him and the people he’d met at the school had only had good things to say about him. It was clear how much Jed cared about his pack and it was clear how much they cared about him as well so he knew that he shouldn’t really be surprised that Jed wanted to check up on them quite often. “I hope you do,” Ben said, a smile touching his lips as Jed said that he was open to saying it more. Realising that they weren’t alone, Ben cleared his throat and offered the others a guilty smile. It was easy for Ben to get carried away when he was with Jed and forget that there were other people around him and he knew that Jed did the same thing. “I’ll try,” Ben nodded as Jed told him to stay alive. The threat really didn’t matter too much to him, what mattered more to Ben was making sure that Jed didn’t have to watch him die again. That was something that Ben had always wanted to avoid, he never wanted to put Jed through that pain because he knew that it had to hurt even though he knew that Ben would resurrect the same way he always did. That was what had made Jed sacrifice himself the day the dragon had attacked and Ben knew that he didn’t want to put Jed through that again. The fact that a crocotta showed up so quickly was a surprise to Ben, the wards around the school had been keeping him safe but Ben knew that he couldn’t spend his life hiding away in the school. Every few days monsters still tracked him down and he had known that it was about time for another one to find him so as far as he was concerned it was good timing. He still wasn’t used to being found that quickly, though, and Ben hoped that this was going to work. He always tried to put on a brave face so that Jed and their friends wouldn’t worry about him too much but the truth was that Ben was tired of dying. This had been his life for the last five thousand years and it had kept him from doing a lot of things. Now he had someone he loved in his life and Ben knew that he wanted to finally be able to start living his life with Jed. “It’s okay Jed,” Ben said gently as he slipped the bracelet on, glad that MG was there to stop him from stepping in. “Agreed,” Ben nodded, knowing that he would feel better if the girl kept her distance. For a moment she genuinely seemed to change her mind about wanting to hurt him and she seemed grateful to have been stopped but suddenly that changed and the girl was standing before him before he could even react. Ben’s eyes were fixed on the girl and he was about to try and push her away but before he could even do that her hand had shot out and a surprised gasp escaped his lips as her hand ripped into his chest. The last thing he heard was the sound of Jed’s voice calling his name and then there was only darkness. Josie’s heart broke as she watched her brother rush to Ben’s side and the look in his eyes right now was one that she never wanted to see again. This was why they had been working so hard to help Ben in the first place and Josie had honestly thought that the bracelet would work. For a moment it had done but it wasn’t enough and Josie couldn’t blame Jed for being angry. “I’m so sorry Jed,” she said gently before giving Hope’s hand a gentle squeeze, hoping that her girlfriend wasn’t going to take Jed snapping at her to heart. “It looked like it was working but I guess the enchantments weren’t strong enough.” Josie hated the fact that Ben had died but more than anything she felt responsible for it. She wanted to reach for Jed and pull him into a hug but she thought better of it as he straightened up and growled before heading in Tara’s direction. It wasn’t the girl’s fault, it was the curse and she was proud of MG for standing up for her. “She’s innocent in all this Jed, she was a victim of the curse as well,” she said gently, stepping forward and placing her hand on her brother’s shoulder. “Ben wouldn’t want you to hurt her, you know that.” She knew that it was the grief talking right now, this wasn’t Jed and she knew that she didn’t want him to lose sight of who he was. Moving away from Jed, Josie slipped the bracelet off of Ben’s wrist with a sigh. She winced at Jed’s mumbled retort to Hope and she slipped her free hand into her girlfriend’s. “We’ll help by getting this bracelet to work. We need to make it much stronger,” she said gently. They had underestimated just how strong Ben’s curse was but she knew that they weren’t going to make that same mistake again. All Josie could do was watch as Jed picked up Ben and started carrying him through the school, she knew that they would have some questions to answer later but the truth was that she didn’t want to think about that right now, she just wanted to find a way to stop this happening again.
A few hours later the sharp intake of breath sounded as Ben came back to life and he sat upright, his hand still resting in Jed’s. “I’m sorry I didn’t stay alive like you asked,” he said gently, giving Jed’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Are you okay?” he asked, bringing his free hand up and letting it rest against Jed’s cheek. Ben had never wanted Jed to see him die again and he had honestly hoped that the bracelet the girls had worked out would stop either of them from going through that again but it hadn’t worked and now he wasn’t sure what was going to work. That wasn’t a problem for right now, though, all he wanted was to make sure that Jed was alright. “You’re not really going to play Justin Bieber on repeat, are you?” he added, hoping to lighten the mood a little. – I freed myself from words never said –
Jed chuckled at the way Josie's words reminded him of the time he had almost left the house so late just to go and talk to Ben. If it hadn't been Josie, he definitely would've done it. Jed wasn't sure how the rest of the day was gonna go. They were either going to be really happy about this, or they were going to be extremely disappointed and Jed really wanted today to be a win. He wanted Ben to be able to have a normal life without constantly worrying about being attacked by creatures. Sure, the bracelet won't break Ben's curse, but it should offer him some peace while they figure out a way to break it permanently.
But then, the worst-case scenario played right before his eyes when that girl actually managed to tear out Ben's heart before Josie was able to cast the spell that would put her to sleep as they had done with the dragon. Jed glanced over at his sister but didn't say anything, his frown still etched into his features. "Well, I wish Ben didn't have to pay the price for this little test run." Jed said with an edge to the tone of his voice that showcased he was still angry. Werewolves were known to be temperamental and Jed was no exception. If anything, that anger was almost always there, scratching and gnawing at that piece of control that he had left. Jed's red eyes relaxed on Josie when she mentioned that the girl was innocent in all of this. He knew that, but God, he was so goddamn angry at her for it. He knew Ben wouldn't have wanted him to hurt the girl back. Jed's eyes relaxed on Ben's deceased body before he quickly looked away, still not being able to stomach the sight of him dead like that. It hurt. "You know, if you and Hope had just put her to sleep like you had done with the dragon instead of trying to make a friendly conversation with her, none of this would've happened." Jed stepped away from Josie's touch with a shake of his head following. Hope frowned slightly as she gave Josie's hand a gentle squeeze, knowing well that she was already blaming herself.
"Yeah..." Jed trailed off, still not meeting his sister's eyes when she mentioned that they will help by making the bracelet work. "You do that." Jed mumbled under his breath before he proceeded to carry Ben back to the school where he stayed close to Ben until he woke up which happened a few hours later. The sharp intake that he did made him look up as his concerned eyes relaxed on his boyfriend. "Hey, you." Jed greeted in a soft voice, his anger from earlier already simmered down. Staying in that quiet room made him rethink what he'd said to his friends and it made him realize that he really was a dick to them when all they had meant to do was help. "It's okay." Jed shook his head when Ben apologized for not being able to keep his promise. His hand moved to rest on top of Ben's, his lips forming into a gentle smile.
A chuckle left his lips at Ben's question before he shook his head. He jerked his chin at his phone which was resting on the nightstand, charging. "Saved by the low battery. For now." Jed said with a quick nod of his head following. "Josie took the bracelet back. They're working on making it stronger. I didn't ask how, I was kinda... too busy being a total dick to them." Jed said with a small sigh falling from his lips, feeling disappointed with himself for allowing that version of himself to win. He had made a promise to himself that he was going to do better. He was going to be better but it felt like he had ruined it all just now.

“It just shows how much he cares,” Ben said, a smile touching his lips as Josie said that Jed had a habit of wanting to leave home in the middle of the night to check on people. He knew that Jed had wanted to do the same thing so that they could talk before they got together and the truth was that Ben thought that it was really cute. He knew how much Jed cared about his pack and he also knew that Jed hadn’t always seen himself in the best light. Right now he was trying to do better than he had done before, though, and that went a long way as far as Ben was concerned. Jed had always looked out for him and Ben tried to do the same for Jed in return. He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t nervous about trying what Josie and Hope had in mind but he trusted them and he knew that it would be worth it to be able to live a monster attack free life with Jed. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way, though, and Josie could see just how heartbroken Jed was. Ben would come back just like he always did but that wasn’t the point and she hated the fact that it hadn’t worked. “You’re not the only one here who cares about him, Jed. We all do, we’re his friends. We never wanted him to go through this again,” Josie said gently. She knew that Jed was hurting so she didn’t blame him for lashing out but they really had wanted to help Ben and Josie knew that they were going to have to keep trying until they managed to make the enchantments strong enough to give Ben the life he deserved. She knew that Ben wouldn’t have wanted the girl to end up getting hurt because of this just like he hadn’t wanted the dragon to either and she was certain that Jed knew it deep down but right now his grief was driving him and Josie knew that she had to find a way to get through to him. Jed’s next words hit Josie hard and she let her hand fall as Jed stepped away from her. “It looked like the bracelet was working and if we had put her to sleep straight away then we wouldn’t have known that it wasn’t strong enough. We need to understand the curse better to be able to break it,” she said, doing her best to keep her voice steady as she gave Hope’s hand a gentle squeeze in return. Josie hated that Jed was hurting like this and she hated that Ben had died because what they’d tried hadn’t worked. She couldn’t take either of those things back but she could try again and she hoped that they would let her.
A few hours later Ben woke up and a smile touched his lips as he looked over at Jed. “Hey,” he said, his voice warm as he pushed himself up into a sitting position. His chest still hurt but he knew that the pain would fade soon enough and the truth was that right now he wasn’t worried about that at all. As Jed said it was okay, Ben shook his head. “No it isn’t, I never wanted you to see that happen again,” he said gently. Jed had been there for him through so much so it wasn’t the first time Jed had seen him die but Ben had known that he hadn’t wanted Jed to go through that again even with the knowledge that he would come back. “Thank goodness for the low battery,” he grinned as he glanced over at Jed’s phone before turning his attention back to his boyfriend. As Jed spoke again Ben could tell that Jed was beating himself up about how he had spoken to Josie and the others and Ben gave Jed’s hands a tug. “Come here,” he said, moving over on the bed so that Jed could join him. “I know you, you would have grieved even though you knew I’d come back because that’s the kind of guy you are. You have a good heart, Jed, so don’t beat yourself up about lashing out while you were hurting. I know they won’t hold it against you.”JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed's frown was still digging deep into his features as he listened to Josie, shaking his head because, despite her words, he was still feeling angry. He chose not to say anything back because he was worried that if he were to say something back, he would unintentionally hurt her feelings, so he kept quiet, though it was clear from his clenched fist that he was still upset. "Goddamnit." Jed mumbled under his breath, his jaw clenched tight.
The world could be cruel when it wanted to, huh? Jed hated it. Hated that today didn't feel like a win. It was more like a reminder that things don't usually go the way he wanted them to. Ben might just not be the only one cursed here, but Jed's curse was mainly just rotten luck, really.
Well, actually, glancing at Ben now, Jed reminded himself that his luck wasn't always bad because it put him in Ben's path. So he can't really complain. "I mean, don't get me wrong, it sucks, but you have no control over it." Jed said with a quick nod of his head following not long after. A chuckle fell from his lips as he glanced over at his phone which was still charging atop the nightstand.
Jed got up from his seat at the tug he felt on his hand and soon joined Ben on the bed. A soft sigh fell from his lips as he turned on his side to look at Ben at a better angle. His eyes softened as he listened to Ben, his words making his lips stretch into a soft smile. "Thank you. I'll fix it when I see them. I get it now, why MG was trying to protect me because I just can't think clearly when it comes to you. I probably would've gotten hurt. That girl had so many teeth, it was kinda terrifying if I'm being honest."
"I just hate that today didn't feel like a win." Jed glanced over at the alarm on his bedside table before he gnawed on his bottom lip. "Well, today's not over yet. Maybe it will wind up being a win." Jed was scrambling for a sliver of optimism, for anything that would make today wind up being a big win for them. "Guess we'll just have to wait and see."

For five thousand years Ben’s life had been the same, his father had cursed him and ever since then he had been doomed to die and resurrect repeatedly over that time. Ben knew that it was his father’s way of punishing him from stealing magic from Heaven and giving it to the humans who lived in the village he had grown up in but Jed had helped him realise that he didn’t deserve the torture his father had put him through. Ben had always struggled letting people get too close to him but Jed had found his way into his heart and Ben knew that was never going to change. For the first time he had real friends as well and Ben knew that he wanted to have a future with Jed and he wanted their friends to be a part of it as well. The school kept him safe but Ben knew that by being there he was putting the other students in danger so he had taken to sneaking off until the monsters killed him and he resurrected but after Jed found out he’d given up his life to protect him. Ben knew now more than ever that they had to find a way to stop the curse and even though he’d died again that day, for a brief moment there had been a glimmer of hope that they might have found a solution and that was more than he’d had in thousands of years. “I know but I want to. I hate that this curse keeps affecting our lives like this,” Ben admitted. He was still able to enjoy his time with Jed but at the same time the worry about a monster attacking was always there in the back of his mind. Ben knew that given what Mystic Falls was like there would always be that risk but right now he was a monster magnet and he knew that he didn’t want Jed or anyone else getting hurt because of it. Smiling as Jed joined him on the bed, Ben wrapped his arm around his boyfriend and brought his free hand up to brush Jed’s hair away from his face. “Yeah, you probably would have done,” Ben agreed, his smile gentle as his eyes met Jed’s. “I’m your blindspot and you’re mine.” That was something that he’d never had before but he wasn’t necessarily sure that it was a bad thing. He loved Jed and he knew that he would do anything he could in order to keep him safe and Jed had already made it clear that he would do the same for him. “It was awful, out of all of the monsters I’ve come across they’re one of the worst,” Ben admitted. “Did you know that they can literally suck out a person’s soul?” he asked, a shudder running through him at the thought. Thankfully that wasn’t something that he had ever experienced but he had seen it happen and it was horrifying to say the least. As Jed said that he hated that today didn’t feel like a win, Ben’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “There’s still time,” he nodded, knowing that he wanted them to have something good to take away from today too. “Let’s go find the others and see if they’ve figured out how to make the bracelet work. The sooner that happens the sooner I can take you out on a proper date.”JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
"Your father made it pretty difficult for you to have any control of it. He knew what he was doing." Jed pressed his lips into a thin line before he shook his head. "God, your father is such a dick," Jed mumbled under his breath with a breathless, humorless chuckle falling from his lips not long after. Jed nodded his head when Ben pointed out that he was his blind spot and Jed was Ben's. "You're definitely not wrong there."
Jed's eyes widened slightly when Ben pointed out that Tara could suck souls out of people. "What?" Jed questioned, his surprise clear in the tone of his voice. "Like the dementors in Harry Potter?" Jed breathed a 'wow' under his breath. "Freaky." So not only did Tara have freaky teeth, and an unhinged jaw, but she could suck souls out of people, too? Wow.
Jed took a deep breath before he nodded his head as he pushed himself up into a sitting position. "Okay," Jed said as he brushed his hand through his hair, brushing it back and away from his face before he turned his attention to Ben, his lips stretching into a grin. "Oh yeah? Well, I went shopping the other day and got something that's not flannel for our date." Jed pushed himself up from his bed. "So, let's get this done with so we can go on that date." Jed held his hand out for Ben to take so they could find the rest of the squad.
He did give Ben the time to change out of his bloody shirt if he chose to and if not, that was alright with Jed too. Once they were ready to go, Jed followed the squad's familiar scents, MG and Hope both raising their heads to look over at them, their lips stretching to form a synchronized smile. "Hey, welcome back." That was MG's voice. Hope placed down the book that she was looking through. "We're just about done," Hope said with a quick nod of her following.

“I think you’re right. No one really knew much about magic back then but either he has upgraded my curse since then or he and the angels knew more than they were letting on about it,” Ben nodded. He had only heard a little about magic from the voices in his head that Jack had told him was something called angel radio. The angels had sounded like they were afraid of magic in a way but he knew that his father must have known more about it in order to come up with a curse that was this difficult to break. As Jed said that his father was a dick, Ben couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re telling me,” he chuckled. “I’ve never met the guy and I really don’t want to.” Ben knew that there was a part of him that should be curious about his father but the truth was that he felt nothing but hatred for the angel first for abandoning him when he had asked for help and then for cursing him. Ben had spent five thousand years being tortured because of his father and he knew that he didn’t want to go through that any longer than he had to. “I’m not sure that’s a bad thing but I don’t want you getting hurt again,” he said gently. Jed had already died once and Ben would do anything to make sure that that didn’t happen again. “Just like them,” Ben nodded, glad that there was a reference that he understood. Jed had already showed him those movies and it had to be said that he liked them. “It’s very freaky. To be honest they’ve always been one of my least favourite monsters,” he admitted. There was just something about them that he didn’t like and it went way beyond the fact that they always wanted to kill him. As Jed agreed that they still had time, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. The day wasn’t over yet so Ben knew that he didn’t want to write it off completely. As Jed said that he had gone shopping for something that wasn’t flannel for their date, Ben couldn’t help but laugh. “Is that so? I can’t wait to see it,” he chuckled. He knew that Ben would look handsome no matter what but just knowing that he had gone to the effort of buying something for their date made it that much more special as far as Ben was concerned. He had done a bit of shopping himself after he was able to start accessing his account again so he knew that he would be able to go for something that didn’t have the school’s logo on it which would definitely be a good thing. “Deal,” he nodded, taking Jed’s hand and getting to his feet so they could find the others. Ben knew that he might be risking ruining more clothes but he still changed his shirt before going to see the others. He didn’t doubt that some of the other students would have seen him being carried through the school and the last thing he wanted was to end up drawing more attention to himself by walking around wearing a bloody shirt that had a hole in it right where his heart was. It didn’t take them long to find the others thanks to Jed’s abilities and he offered Hope and MG a smile in return as they looked up and smiled at them. “Thanks,” he said, nodding to MG as he welcomed him back. “Thank you so much for not giving up with this,” Ben said sincerely as Hope said that they were about done. Josie was the last to look up but he had seen the way her eyes were closed and her lips were moving so he knew that she was working on it. Finally she opened her eyes and looked up at them and her expression was instantly apologetic. “We’re all so sorry it didn’t work the first time Ben,” she said gently and Ben shook his head. “It’s okay, I knew the risk. It’s all about trial and error, I just really hope it works this time because dying sucks,” he offered, hoping to ease her worry a little and Jed’s too if he could help it. Jed’s hand was still clasped in his own just like it always was and he gave Jed’s hand a gentle squeeze. Josie got up and handed him the bracelet and he looked down at it for a moment before glancing up at the others once more. “I know last time you wanted to try it with the wards down but do you mind if this time we see if Hope is affected by my curse first? I know it’s asking a lot but I trust you guys completely and if I die again then I don’t want it to be because of another stranger.” Ben knew that it wasn’t fair to put that on Hope but just the thought of dying again at someone else’s hands was enough to make him feel sick to his stomach and he knew that he didn’t want that. If he had to die he would rather it was by someone he cared about. JED SALTZMAN
