If there was anything of Giuseppe in him it was his sheer bloody-mindedness. Damon knew that his stubbornness had probably just fed the hatred in his father’s veins for him but stubbornness had kept him alive on the battlefield, it had been what he’d thought had Katherine falling for him, it sure as hell had been what had kept him searching for a way back to her for over a hundred years. It had kept him alive this time too, as Klaus’ poison had burned through his veins. He’d been tempted to give in and just call it quits without another fight but Claire’s stubbornness had run as deep as his own and she hadn’t let him. She’d dangled temptation in his face instead, making it clear that nothing was shifting between them unless he came through the bite. It had definitely given him something more to hold onto and that stubbornness had stopped him from conveniently forgetting about what had been said between the two of them. This was his chance to move on and Damon was determined to take it. He’d spent too many years hanging on for a woman who’d been free to be with him the entire time. That little revelation had proved that Katherine hadn’t loved him ever. This might sting her pride a little but honestly, he was beyond caring. He was doing what he should’ve done a century ago, even if it left him feeling a little like he was floundering in the dark on all of this.
There’d been that kernel of fear in the pit of his stomach as he’d been setting it all up. Zero practice plus actual feelings for someone, it could’ve ended up in one huge mess, starting with the dress and Sir Grump-a-lot being pulled into it. Instead of a mess this was actually going pretty well. Damon clucked his tongue as Claire called him stubborn in more polite words. His dark brows beetled for a moment. ”Me a mule? Never,” he crooned. ”I kinda made a promise to myself while I was out of town licking my wounds. It’s time to be a decent guy, well, as decent as I can get.” That meant listening to what he wanted as much as it did trying to make amends for what he’d done for other people. Time to put himself first in a completely non-selfish way … if that was possible for him after all this time. Raising his brows, Damon mused for a moment as Claire laughed and then shook his head. ”You have my sympathies. He’s gonna have to live with playing third wheel more now. I know I’ll grow on him eventually, like moss, or mold.” Undoubtedly Ares would find it just as repulsive but they were both in Claire’s life so he could put up with it. Damon swayed lightly as he gestured with his fingers, getting the discrete staff to get it playing. Something light and classical that had him swaying a little more with her. ”Not making what easy?” he asked, a little touch of the devil in his voice. He hummed lightly, trailing his lips back towards Claire’s before he drew back to grin at her. Fingers laced at her spine he twirled them within reach of the table, only letting go with one hand to sweep a glass up for her. As she took it he picked up one of his own. ”We should say a toast…” he said huskily. Something to commemorate the fact that this was a momentous occasion here.

Damon seemed to be full of surprises each time he showed up at the station. The first time it hadn’t been a good thing as at that time he had been suffering from a werewolf bite but this time it was different. There had been something between them back in London when they first met but Claire hadn’t wanted to admit it back then. She also hadn’t wanted to admit it when they’d reunited in Mystic Falls and it had taken Damon almost dying for them to come clean about it. It hadn’t been easy and she wouldn’t have blamed Damon if he had wanted to forget all about it. In fact she had thought that he had given that they hadn’t talked about it since then but as it turned out she couldn’t have been more wrong. Damon had been through a lot with Katherine, he and Stefan had both been manipulated by the woman and it had taken over a century for those wounds to start to heal. Now that Stefan was back in town and Damon was feeling better she hoped that they would be able to continue to patch things up but that evening was about something different entirely. She hadn’t for one moment thought that Damon would do something like this but he had gone to a lot of trouble and she knew that she wanted to enjoy it while it lasted. She knew that not everyone got this kind of treatment and she knew better than to take it for granted. A part of her was still worried that they might end up ruining their friendship but Damon had promised her that that wasn’t going to happen and she knew that she needed to believe that. Even so she was still a little nervous about this considering it had been such a long time since she had last been on a date but she knew that she wanted to enjoy it while it lasted. She had gone on to get married after she moved to America and she and her husband had been blessed with some children of their own but she’d had to compel them into believing that she’d died after she became a vampire so that she wouldn’t have to worry about dragging them into her mess. She hadn’t asked for any of this and she had known that she couldn’t risk her husband and children getting involved in the supernatural world so no matter how difficult it had been she knew that it was for the best. She hadn’t been involved with anyone since then so this was going to take some getting used to, to say the least. She knew that it was going to be worth it if this all worked out, though, so she was doing her best to keep that in mind. “I don’t know, I’ve always thought you were a decent guy,” Claire admitted. He had ended up getting on her nerves on more than a few occasions but he had always done right by her and that went a long way as far as she was concerned. She knew that he had done a lot of awful things but he was trying to be better now and that had to count for something. “Either that or he’ll insist on double dates,” she grinned. She knew that Damon and Ares didn’t tend to see eye to eye but they both meant a lot to her and she hoped that in time they would find a way to get along. It wasn’t long before they were dancing and her smile softened as he got the staff to start playing music for them to dance to. “I never knew you had this in you,” she admitted. She had seen a lot of different sides of Damon during the time that she had known him but this side of him was completely different and it was refreshing to say the least. “You know exactly what I’m talking about,” Claire said, rolling her eyes playfully at the tone of his voice. Kissing him back, she took the glass from him and kept her other arm wrapped around his neck. “Go for it,” she said, moving her free hand and running it lightly down his cheek. DAMON SALVATORE

Leaving Mystic Falls in the rear view mirror had always been his way of getting past Katherine. The first time he’d left her behind, supposedly burned to ashes in the church by his own father, the second he’d driven away, the shattered pieces of his heart crumbling through his fingers as Katherine had revealed that she’d never really loved him, the third time, this wasn’t about her tearing his heart out, it had been about somebody else putting it together. Damon knew he could’ve pretended to forget after he’d healed, the memory burned out of him along with the control he’d almost lost. That would’ve been cowardly though and that had never been him, not even when he’d turned away from the battlefield, knowing that going home instead of dying in vain would only make Giuseppe hate him more. It took bravery to open yourself up again, even if you were the unflappable Damon Salvatore. Only three people had ever seen that vulnerable center of him and only two had looked and not seen something to manipulate. His brother and Claire. His life had literally been in their hands and after they’d saved him Damon had known there was no way he was gonna continue tossing it away. This was going to take more than just dinner but he was going to turn it around, starting with tonight. Starting with Claire.
She always had seen him in a different light to everybody else, even when he’d been at his worst in London. For him she’d killed Claire and sacrificed the life that she could’ve had for someone he would’ve said she’d barely known. Damon knew she would’ve argued with that though, she hadn’t been blind, she’d seen beneath it all and now she was admitting it. Damon made a humming noise under his breath as he shook his head. ”Forget rose coloured glasses, yours are x-ray vision,” he muttered. ”That wasn’t what I wanted anybody to see then.” For years he’d built a persona that had kept everybody at arm’s length, the hurt hidden beneath fuelling his anger, forcing him to lash out. It was still there at times but knowing that he’d destroyed other people’s lives here in Mystic Falls had begun to settle his internal Vesuvius down a little.
He hadn’t done anything to Claire’s partner, yet, but undoubtedly the guy had heard his reputation and hadn’t exactly seemed pleased with being roped into his scheme this evening, although sour could’ve just been the guy’s default state. Damon’s brows rose in amusement, a snort rumbling from him. ”Double dates? Someone other than his partner actually puts up with that full time scowl?” He hadn’t seen that coming. Although most would’ve said they hadn’t seen this coming either. Tipping his head to one side, Damon smirked, a softened version of his usual smirk. ”Nobody did,” he crooned, although he hadn’t known he was capable of it either. Tutting, Damon bobbed his head slowly before he settled his lips against hers. ”Maybe not making it easy was my aim. I kinda missed out on the last hundred years of slow seduction.” Now he was making up for lost time. Laughter rumbled again as Damon handed her a glass. ”Sure you don’t want to make it? OK, OK,” he let out a sigh. ”To not dying, to finally pulling my head out of my ass, to us finally giving this a chance.” It was bad, he knew that, but it was an honest sort of bad, Damon thought as he took a sip from his glass.

Claire had hoped that she would get the chance to see Damon that day after her shift came to an end but it had to be said that this wasn’t quite what she had been expecting. While he was suffering from the werewolf bite she had told him that she would understand if he wanted to forget all about what they had talked about when she was feeling better but she had still felt disappointed when he had actually done that. It had taken a long time for them to actually get to the point where they were honest with each other about what was going on but they hadn’t talked about it since then so the truth was that this had come completely out of the blue. It was clear to her that Damon had been planning this for a while though, after all he had gone to the trouble of setting all of this up and he had also picked out a dress that was perfect for her. He had even gone to the trouble of roping Ares in to help with the surprise and she knew that that couldn’t have been easy so she knew that she wanted to make the most of this while it lasted. It had been a long time since she had last been on a date so she would be the first to admit that she was out of practice but this was Damon, one of the people who knew her best in the world, so she knew that it would be just fine. Damon’s words were enough to make a smile work its way across her face as her eyes met his. “You should be used to that by now,” she teased. She had always been good at reading Damon and she wouldn’t be surprised if that had annoyed him on more than a few occasions but it had just let her see through all of the bravado he put on while he was around everyone else and actually appreciate the decent guy that was underneath. She knew that he had made mistakes over the years but none of them were perfect and they all had things they wished that they could take back so she knew better than to hold any of that against him. “I know it wasn’t. You were hurting back then but I’m glad you’re ready to move on now,” she admitted. He had seemed to finally accept that Katherine had played both him and Stefan while he was suffering from the werewolf bite and they seemed to have finally put their differences aside and forgiven each other for everything that had happened so she hoped that Damon really was ready to get on with his life now and perhaps explore what was going on between them if everything he had done that day was anything to go by. As he spoke about Ares, Claire hit his arm playfully. “Ares is a good guy, he has always had my back,” she said. The two of them had been looking out for each other ever since they had learned what each other was and there wasn’t anyone that she trusted to have her back more while she was working. “Well it’s definitely a pleasant surprise,” she assured him. She really hadn’t known that he had this in him but he definitely had gone above and beyond and it was flattering to think that he had done so for her. “That’s just cruel,” Claire groaned. She had been so good at resisting any advances that Damon had made while they were playing pool but for some reason it was so much more difficult now after seeing all of the effort that he had gone to in order to make the evening special. “Definitely not,” she laughed as Damon asked if she wanted to make the toast instead. As he spoke again Claire couldn’t stop a smile from working its way across her face and she touched her glass to his. “Cheers to that,” she said as she lifted her glass to her lips and took a sip. It had never seemed it on the surface but after years of Giuseppe trying to beat every ounce of who he was out of him and Katherine practically tearing his heart in front of his face there were cracks right through his confidence. The big bad Damon Salvatore, brought to his knees for the second time in his life by the woman who’d helped pick him up from them the first time. On one level it had probably been karma, although that had been biting him on the ass since long before Katherine had come on the scene. It had been bite after bite from birth from a man whose sole purpose in life seemed to be making his wife and children miserable, at least until karma, or rather Stefan, had bitten back. He didn’t think Giuseppe had felt half as unsteady as he had in those final moments though but if all was right with the world Giuseppe would’ve spent an eternity burning in hell for what he’d done afterwards. Even when the bite had been burning its way through his system Damon had been hoping he wouldn’t end up in the same place. There were things he still had to make up for, horrible, violent, bloody things he’d done over the years but he’d been repentant, he’d been trying to be at least. Another century of life or two and there was a chance he might just have balanced the scales a little. That hadn’t been the main reason he’d clung on when it would’ve been so easy to let go. Those reasons were people, Stefan and Claire. He might’ve called unfair on her making him wait to see where this was going but starting something then and there and dying on her if Stefan hadn’t made it in time would’ve been a cruelty and the new Damon Salvatore wasn’t cruel.
He was a charmer instead, capable of romantic gestures without some sort of ulterior motive behind it, not the sort he would’ve once been accused of at least. Ares might’ve seen something to it that wasn’t there but that was just him being the growling dog warning people away from his partner. Shaking his head, Damon let a smile curl at one corner of his lips. ”You’re the only one who ever pulled it off so it’s still got some novelty to it,” he admitted. She’d been gone from his life for a whole century too. Neither he or Stefan had known what had gone on behind the scenes, that Claire hadn’t been laying in a grave somewhere for the better part of a hundred years. She’d come back around eventually though, with the sort of good timing she’d always had when it had come to the two of them. Dark brows drew together at the thought of how screwed up he’d been thanks to Katherine. His expression softened at Claire’s admission though, his throat working as he mustered up a smile again. ”Makes two of us.” Let this stick in Katherine’s craw, let her choke on the idea that he wasn’t going to spend the rest of his existence pining for her. Let it stick in Ares’ craw too. He could dislike him all he wanted, it wasn’t going to change the fact that something was going on between him and Claire. ”That’s the one reason why I put up with him,” he joked darkly. Maybe if Claire hadn’t been between the two of them he might’ve got on with the guy a little better but both were watching out for her in a way that left them wary of the other. There was nothing in tonight Ares could’ve argued about anyway. Damon had just a little smug to him as Claire called the night a pleasant surprise. He smiled into their kiss, laughing gently as he drew back. ”I’m kidding,” he promised, his voice low and husky. ”You honestly think I’d be that cruel?” Some would’ve said yes. Drawing in a breath, Damon lifted his own glass, chinking it lightly against Claire’s. ”You didn’t argue about my head being up my ass…” Maybe because it was true, he thought as he sipped his champagne.

Claire had thought that when the end of her shift rolled around she would end up going for a few quiet drinks with Damon, Stefan, Ares or any combination of the three of them but she couldn’t have been more wrong. As it turned out Damon had been planning something special and he had roped Ares into helping him pull it off. Claire had never thought that she would see the two of them work together on anything and she knew that he wouldn’t have done so willingly but the fact that he had meant the world to her. She knew that the two of them didn’t exactly get along but she had a feeling that that was because the two of them were so similar in a lot of ways. They could both be incredibly stubborn when the wanted to be and they both had a habit of thinking that they were always right but at the end of the day they both cared about her, albeit in different ways if this was anything to go by. Ares was her partner, someone that she could trust both on the job and off of it, and Damon had always been one of her closest friends but they had finally come clean about there being something more between the two of them while Damon was dying from the hybrid bite. Nothing had happened since then so she had honestly thought that Damon had wanted to take the free pass that she had offered him and forget all about what the two of them had talked about that day. It had hurt thinking that he had wanted to forget all about it because since then she had come to realise that she had liked Damon even back when they were living in London all those years ago but he was a friend first and she had known that she’d needed to respect his wishes. If he had wanted to do something about it then she had known that he would have done but he hadn’t. She had always known that she could be the one to bring it up but it hadn’t felt right to do so if Damon had wanted to put it down to the words of a delirious man so instead she had stayed quiet and now she felt foolish for having done so. The dress, the place they had gone to eat, it all seemed so perfect and Claire couldn’t believe that he had gone to so much trouble. She knew that she wasn’t the easiest person to deal with, after all she had known Damon a long time ago before he had truly become the person that everyone in town knew him to be so she was able to see through the bravado that he always seemed to feel the need to put on while he was around people and not everyone liked it when someone called them out on it so she knew deep down that she wouldn’t have blamed him if he had wanted to forget it. Instead he had gone to all this trouble, though, and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it. “You know I’m not like other women,” Claire said, a smile working its way across her face as she looked over at Damon. She wasn’t the kind of person to fall at his feet, nor was she the kind of person to be immediately taken in by his charms. She knew how to be careful around Damon and the last thing she wanted was to end up getting her heart broken so the last thing she wanted was to rush into anything. “I’m glad it hasn’t put you off though, I know it isn’t for everyone,” she added. Some guys liked the superficial girls who were easily taken in and would give them whatever they wanted but that wasn’t her at all and it never had been. “I know if you tried then the two of you would get along. You’re both pretty similar,” Claire admitted. That was probably why the two of them ended up butting heads so much but they both cared about her so she hoped that in time they would put their differences aside and get along. “No, I don’t,” she said, a smile working its way across her face at the sound of Damon’s laugh. “I guess it will just come down to whether or not my resolve holds out.” She wanted to do this right and she knew that she didn’t want to rush into anything but then again Damon wasn’t a stranger to her and the way she felt about him just felt right. It was something that had been building between them for a long time so if she was honest she was looking forward to seeing where things were going to go between them. Lifting her glass to her lips to take a sip of her champagne, she couldn’t help but smile as he spoke again. “You wouldn’t want me to start lying to you now, would you?” she teased before letting her expression turn more serious. “Honestly you are being a bit too hard on yourself, you were hurting and we all deal with that in different ways. You’re ready to move on now and so am I so that’s all that matters, I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.”DAMON SALVATORE

It wouldn’t have been the first time he’d turned tail and run, if he’d done just that after he’d recovered from the bite. Scratch the surface a little, reveal something he didn’t like and Damon Salvatore would be taking off for the hills. Maybe in the past it had been a sign of cowardice, although that first time he’d have argued over it. Rather than facing up to his demons, his mistakes, he took to the road, putting them in the rear view mirror until he was no longer reminded of them with every breath. It took a while. Coming home from war he’d buried his head in the first distraction he’d found. It had been a mistake, one he should’ve seen then. Katherine was too busy playing both him and Stefan to have ever given a damn. When the time came for her to come through on her promise of an eternity together she’d been too busy saving her own neck to care about the heart he’d already practically torn from his own chest and handed over to her. He hadn’t known it then but she’d keep an iron grip on it for almost a hundred and fifty years, even when it gaze one of those aching little contractions for somebody else. Damon knew if Katherine hadn’t still had her grip on it when he and Stefan had been in London maybe this night would’ve happened a century ago in an entirely different city. Maybe it would’ve ended in a mistake then, more likely in a mess when he inevitably screwed something up but that was as up in the air as everything was now. Would Claire have likely ended up hurt even more then because of the two of them? More than likely. She hadn’t been what she was now then, hadn’t been quite the same person then either.
Neither one of them had been. Damon’s lips curled lightly at her reminder. She hadn’t taken his crap back in Victorian London and Claire hadn’t taken it since he’d found her playing pool at the Grill either. A singularly unique woman. Damon made a sound low in his throat, leaning down to touch his lips to her ear. ”I’m reminded of that daily,” he promised in a low voice. He doubted many others would’ve gotten him through the bite, some might’ve tried, others would’ve pushed while they had the chance, trying to shuffle him off the mortal coil. It wasn’t the reason he’d done all of this tonight but he was beyond grateful for it. Damon shook his head as he drew back, a promise that he wouldn’t be put off. ”Some don’t know what they’re missing.” A wry smile touched Damon’s lips as Claire told him that he and Ares were pretty similar. Too similar, in ways neither one of them was ever going to enjoy admitting to. ”You willing to clear up the blood shed after we’ve tried?” he asked innocently. There probably wouldn’t be much. Ares was a warlock and that whammy trick of theirs had a way of putting vampires down for the short term. Thankfully Ares wasn’t around to see him taking liberties with his partner tonight, undoubtedly there’d be words muttered then and that skull shattering pain hitting for at least a moment. Damon smiled guilelessly as he drew back an inch, dark lashes fluttering. ”Is there anything I can do to help loosen it?” He imagined that he was already doing most of what would help Claire’s resolve slip away. The dress, the venue, the champagne. Pressing his lips together, Damon shook his head slowly. His throat worked as Claire turned serious. He used the hand not on the glass to draw her in. ”That makes two of us,” he breathed. ”No regrets tonight, no more talking about hurt. Just seeing where this goes.” No dwelling on what he had or hadn’t done while Katherine was yanking him around by his heart strings. Putting down the glass, Damon cupped her face gently, drawing her back into a slow kiss.

The day that Damon had shown up at the station suffering from a hybrid bite was one that Claire knew that she was never going to forget. She had spent the whole time waiting for Stefan to get there trying to convince Damon to hold on and keep fighting but every moment she had been terrified that he was going to slip away from her. She had never wanted to admit that she had feelings for Damon, he could be arrogant and infuriating when he wanted to be and she knew that that side of him was never going to change but ever since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls she had been seeing a different side of him altogether. He wasn’t the Damon that she had met back in London when he was set up as being Jack the Ripper any longer, something in him had changed and something between them had changed that day too. She had always felt sure that what she felt for him was a one sided thing but he had told her different and then they had never mentioned it again until today. Claire knew that she could have brought it up before and she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t thought about it but she had felt like she would have been taking advantage if she had. She had offered Damon the chance to forget about everything that had been said that day and even though it had saddened her to think that he had wanted to do just that it was a decision that she had thought that she was going to have to respect. As it turned out she couldn’t have been more wrong and he had gone to the trouble of spending time planning the perfect first date and that was something that meant a lot to her. Claire hadn’t opened her heart to anyone after she’d left her husband and children behind when she was forced to become a vampire but with Damon everything came so naturally and she knew that if there was anyone that she could see herself being happy and having a future with right now then it was her. She was still nervous in case things didn’t work out between them but they had both promised that their friendship would remain intact and she knew that she just had to believe that that was true. For someone who had made her think that he wasn’t interested in her after all Damon was certainly doing a good job of showing her otherwise now and as his lips touched her ear she felt a pleasant shiver run down her spine. “I’m glad to hear it,” she said, a smile working its way across her face as she turned her head slightly and her lips brushed against his. She knew that Damon could have had anyone that he wanted and he had certainly compelled his way into more than a few beds over the years but this felt different. This felt like the real Damon and that was someone that she always enjoyed seeing. “Their loss is my gain,” Claire said as she brought her hand up and let it run gently down his cheek. She knew that there were a lot of people in town who only knew the side of Damon that he wanted them to see but she had always had a knack for breaking through that shell and seeing who he was underneath and that was something that hadn’t changed. “You both know I would hate to see either of you get hurt so I know you’d be on your best behaviour,” she shrugged, knowing that a few sarcastic comments were probably about as far as they would go. Despite how much they seemed to dislike each other she knew that she meant a lot to both of them so she hoped that sooner or later they might be able to start seeing eye to eye and Damon getting Ares involved in his place for the evening was definitely a good first step. “You’re already trying and you know it,” Claire said, knowing that she was going to have to stand her ground. She had meant it when she’d said that she’d wanted to see what might happen between them but she knew that rushing into anything wouldn’t do either of them any good so she knew that she wanted to take it slow. “That sounds good to me,” she said, a genuine smile forming on her face as she kissed him back. Being the poster boy for unhealthy relationships, Damon knew the expectations bar on tonight would’ve been barely above ground if anybody had known what he was planning tonight. They’d seen the way he was with Katherine, the way he’d been when her ‘death’ had left him bitter and jaded and selfish. They’d seen what he’d done to Vicki and Caroline, the way he’d used both of them. They’d have taken one look at Claire and warned her instantly. Don’t get involved with Damon Salvatore, everything he’s promised you here is a lie. A pretty veneer over something that was bound to be rotten to the core. It was a description he’d heard time and time again. The question always posed – what the hell was wrong with him? There were times when he would’ve said nothing but looking back from his newly lofty position Damon knew that being hurt had been the cause of a lot of his behaviour. Manipulated by those who’d supposedly cared about him, or should’ve done, slapped around by fate, left to stew. It had all bred a bitterness that he could see for what it was now.
If Claire hadn’t seen past that the two of them wouldn’t have been here now. They might still have been taking those little swipes at each other, driving each other crazy, like they had over a century before, but he’d never have been able to talk her into this. She’d seen the real him, boiled down by Niklaus’ bites, the one worth taking a chance on. ”You’ve always been unique. A one in a million,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to the side of her head. Claire was turning her head then and the image of his mind up on that stage the first time he’d seen her suddenly overlaid on to reality. Damon kissed her lightly. He laughed then, Claire’s comment tickling him as she ran her hand down his cheek. ”I’m glad to hear it,” he said, echoing her words of a moment before. Most people wouldn’t have seen it the same way, so many bridges already burned in town. One by one he’d tried to start mending them but there were still so many in ashes. Damon knew it was a matter of time to get them rebuilt but some did just have mortal life spans after all.
He hadn’t burned the one with Ares, that had already been rubble when he’d first met the guy, Claire would want the two of them to patch it up though and learn to get along better in the process but Damon wasn’t sure it was gonna be so easy. Damon hummed low in his throat, tilting his head as he smiled. ”I’d try to be. I know he would too, because we’ve got you in common.” Claire’s wellbeing would be what the two of them would put first. He could picture Ares spluttering now over his ‘taking liberties’ but despite the man’s ears maybe burning he wasn’t here now to see it. Innocence filled Damon’s expression, his brows rising in mock surprise. ”I’d never do such a thing,” he stated in mock outrage. ”If I was though, would it be working?” he asked. Wiggling his brows, he traced his fingers down the line of the zip at the back of her dress before he drew Claire in. ”How about we at least taste test dinner before I take you for another spin around this floor?” The candlelight gleamed off of the cloches on the table, the scent of food touching the air as he let his hand trail down to Claire’s to draw her back towards the table.

Claire hadn’t known what to think when Ares had given her a box containing a dress and she had headed outside to find Damon there waiting for her. It wasn’t that long ago that she had been offloading to Ares about the fact that something had happened between the two of them while Damon was suffering from the hybrid bite and that then he seemed to have wanted to forget all about it. She had known that Ares wouldn’t have said anything to anyone because she had asked him not to and Ares was one of the few people that she knew she could trust. He had been there for her when no one else had and it was easy for her to open up to him. Now she felt a little bad about what she had said but the truth was that she hadn’t known what to think. She had given Damon an out and had told him that if he had wanted to forget about everything that they had said that day then she would understand but the truth was that it had still hurt thinking that he wasn’t interested in her in that way after all. It had taken a lot for her to open up to Damon like that after being alone for so long but he had been dying at the time and she had known that what he’d said might have been in the heat of the moment. That was why she had given Damon the chance to make the next move and it seemed like he finally had done. Before she moved to town it had been decades since the two of them had last seen each other but she’d had feelings for him back then, albeit ones that she had been more than happy to bury since he had driven her crazy most of the time. She had thought that she had left those feelings behind her a long time ago but as it turned out she couldn’t have been more wrong about that. “I think you might be a little biased,” Claire laughed. She definitely didn’t see herself that way but it was still nice to know that Damon did. “It does mean a lot to hear you say that though,” she added as she kissed him back. It had taken her a long time to realise that Damon was finally open to something new but she hadn’t thought that he would be interested in that something new being with her. Katherine had really done a number on both him and Stefan but Stefan had moved on with Elena while Damon had still seemed to be stuck in the past for a long time. He had spent a long time hating Stefan for what had happened to Katherine but now he finally seemed happier and she really was pleased to see it. “It’s true,” she said, her smile returning as her eyes met his. She really was lucky to be the object of Damon’s affections and she hoped that it would last. “That’s all I ask,” Claire said, knowing that the two of them really would put her first despite their differences. They were both much more similar than either of them would care to admit and that was why they clashed so often. The innocence written all over Damon’s face was enough to make Claire laugh and she rolled her eyes playfully. “Maybe but I’m not going to be just another notch on your bedpost, I want this to be real,” she admitted. She hadn’t been with anyone since she had left her husband and children behind so just the thought of opening up to someone like that again was a big deal to her and she knew that she didn’t just want to be another conquest for him. Feeling Damon trace his fingers down the track of the zip resting against her back she couldn’t deny that she was tempted to just give in but she knew that she needed to stand her ground and make sure that if something did happen then it really was right. “Sounds good to me, I’m starving,” she admitted as she moved to take her seat at the table. “You really have gone all out for this.”DAMON SALVATORE

People had been half letting him off the hook for as long as he could remember. Even those who’d grown to hate him for the things he’d done to them eventually ground down to the point where his actions were painted as him just being Damon. Oh, he killed someone else, whoopsy – that’s just Damon. Like who he was had become his excuse for continuing that way. There were echoes of Giuseppe in it, something had happened, his lazy, feckless son must’ve been behind it. It didn’t matter what else he said and did, to his father he’d never diverge from that mental image he had of him.
Damon knew he could’ve continued on that way, gave in to the inevitability of it. Claire might not’ve blamed him if he pretended to forget everything that’d been said as he’d laid there half dead, waiting for the poison to go the rest of the way. He could’ve played on that fact, that he couldn’t remember a damn thing he’d said while his brain had been half boiling inside of his skull. Maybe he could’ve managed it, although it would’ve stuck in his throat, threatened to choke him. His emotional switch had never been flipped to off but for so long he’d given that impression and learned to keep it all bottled tight. Now it was like the genie had loosened the cork – if you could call Katherine a genie of course. She’d been the one to finally knock him out of vicious cycle. Others had caught him and kept him out of it.
Claire had always been waiting there to do that. Although he hadn’t realised that enough until she’d drifted back into town and that newly freed up part of him had taken notice. He’d have gotten around to doing something about them eventually but Klaus had forced his hand and some part of him was grateful for it. Damon’s nose wrinkled as he shook Claire’s laughed comment off. ”Naw,” he drawled softly as he skimmed his lips against hers. ”Maybe a little now but not then. Then you just drove me nuts.” He chuckled lightly, then hummed low in his throat as he let the kiss linger longer this time. ”Any time,” he promised. New Damon wasn’t going to keep his mouth shut, locking anything that actually mattered deep in his chest while the bullcrap and bluster tripped off his tongue with impunity.
It still could at times, especially with people like Ares, but he lanced that pool in his chest now, especially out of sight of judgy little minds. For Claire he could do it with her partner, choke down what he wanted to say and he knew Ares would do the same. For her. Lifting a hand, Damon swiped a finger over his chest in a cross in promise. The joking fell away though, Claire’s laughing comment suddenly tipping him towards serious. He frowned faintly, shaking his head as he cupped Claire’s face in his hands. ”You’re never gonna be that,” he promised hoarsely. This was real. Far more real than anything he’d ever had. Katherine had blinded him to the truth of what was going on, leading him into a maze filled with lies. This was nothing like that. Skimming a thumb over her cheekbone he kissed her fiercely before he forced this to lighten up. Damon trailed his hand down her back, down the zip that ran the length of her spine. Setting both hands at the small of Claire’s back, he spun here in a twirl towards the table. ”Did you expect anything less of me?” he asked, spinning Claire lightly into her seat. He grinned, eyes flicking up as the waiter emerged from a side room with plates in hand.

If someone had told Claire even a couple of months ago that she would end up going out on a date with Damon Salvatore then she would have thought that they were crazy. He had always known just what buttons to push to get her riled up and he infuriated her to no end sometimes but at the end of the day he had always been someone who meant a lot to her. He and Stefan were the only people left alive who remembered the way she used to be, who remembered her when she was human, and she had been worried about reaching out to them considering that she had made it clear to them before she left England that the last thing she wanted was to become a vampire but it had ended up happening anyway. Claire knew that things could have been different if she had reached out to them both straight after she was turned but Damon and Stefan were at each other’s throats back then so she was glad that things had worked out in a way. They had helped bring her out of her shell and that was something that she had desperately needed even though she hadn’t realised it. In a way she liked to think that she had helped Damon as well. He had been hung up on Katherine for such a long time but now he was finally ready to move on and she couldn’t deny that she was happy for him. She had never thought that she would be the one that he would want to move on with but she was and she felt incredibly lucky about that. “You had the same effect on me,” Claire teased as their lips met once more. Damon had done her head in at times but not so much these days. Now she understood why he did the things he did much better and she was glad about that. This was only their first date but things were already so different between the two of them than they had ever been before and Claire was truly happy about that. She hadn’t thought that she deserved to move on after she had to compel her husband and children into thinking that she’d died and had made them move on without her after she became a vampire but now she was starting to realise that she had been wrong about that and in a way it felt fitting that Damon was the one who made her feel like she was finally ready to move on too. As Damon’s expression turned serious and he cupped her face in his hands, Claire immediately felt bad. The words had slipped out of her mouth before she’d even had the chance to think about what she was saying and she brought her hand up and let his rest against his cheek as she kissed him back. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that,” she said gently as she let her forehead rest against his. “I haven’t done this since I became a vampire so this is all so new to me but I know I would never be that for you, I just need to take it slow,” she said, hoping that he would understand. “Can you forgive me?” she asked, hoping that he would. This side of Damon was so new to her but it was one that had her heart melting and she knew that the last thing she wanted was to ruin this before they’d even had the chance to get it started. Soon enough Damon was spinning her towards her chair and Claire couldn’t stop a smile from forming on her face as she sat down. “No I didn’t, you’ve always had exquisite taste,” she said, her eyes fixed solely on Damon as the waiter approached. “Thank you for doing this.”DAMON SALVATORE

Without the bloody end to it London would’ve been some sort of vacation from the Katherine torment. Few thoughts of her had clung to him there, thoughts of her loss buried deep under the hedonistic opportunities of London. The Victorians might’ve acted like they were above those things but in the slightly seedy underbelly they all lost themselves to it. Music halls, salons, drink flowing fast in those velvet lined bars. The streets ran bloody still, his own back marked for it, bringing about Violet’s downfall in the end, but they picked up their skirts and skipped over it, just like folks did now in Mystic Falls. You rose above it and lord he’d succeeded for a while, Damon thought, seeing that past in the back of his mind as Claire teased him now, watching it reflected in her eyes.
He narrowed his eyes, electric blue slits framed by those dark lashes focusing on her. Damon’s hands flexed on her hips, thumbs drumming lightly on her sides. It had been chalk and cheese in those days, the two of them somehow enjoying that to and fro. He’d never imagined it was gonna go anywhere, even while Katherine had been out of reach his heart had been shackled to her, but there’d been enjoyment in the game all the same. ”Drove you nuts? Shocker.” Clucking his tongue, he shook his head, like there was no chance it could’ve happened. It’d practically been a hobby then, trying to see how far he could push her and everybody else. Anything to avoid letting them get too close. Damon hadn’t wanted them to see the cracks that were shot through him. His mom, Giuseppe, the war, Katherine, each of them carving those lines a little deeper until there was too great a chance that one more blow would shatter it all. Temper had been a balm then, all that hurt becoming something more.
Until it had bled out with that poison, a lancing that might just have saved his life in another way.
Saying it out loud hadn’t been as hard as he’d thought but it was gonna take more than words to change an impression he’d given off for more than a century. Claire wasn’t immune to his reputation, the part of her that was trying to move on now trying to reconcile itself with the fact that he was a changed man. Damon shook his head, the frown melting away. ”You don’t have to apologise, I earned it, but … you’re not gonna be that.” The man who would’ve slept with her and walked away without a second thought had been shed like a snake with its skin. ”We take all of this at your speed. All forgiven.” There was a promise to that, an edge to the kiss he pressed to her lips. It was gonna take time, it was all going to take time and he wasn’t going to get impatient enough to just throw it all aside.
Small steps forward, starting with tonight. A date he’d pulled together with the same infinite care he used to guide her towards the table. Damon pulled her chair for her, scooting it in, bending to press his lips to the back of her neck before he headed for his own. He settled in it, a man at ease as the plates were brought and more champagne poured. ”No, thank you for saying yes to tonight. Let’s toast … to hidden depths and an incredible night ahead of us.” He eyed her over the top of his glass as he chinked them together. Damon sipped at the champagne, set it down to start to eat. The start to the second half of what looked like the first night to a new life, one free of the taint of Katherine Pierce.
