Claire knew that she probably should have moved on already but the truth was that after having to leave her husband and children behind a part of her had always felt guilty about the thought of being happy without them. She had compelled them into believing that she had died and she had made them move to a new town so that they could start over without her but it hadn’t been easy for her to do at all. After losing Violet she had come to the conclusion that she never wanted to lose anyone she loved again but that decision had been taken away from her by Lord Ainsley the day he had turned her. He could have easily killed her but instead he had decided to make her suffer and it was only through her determination not to let him get his hands on her family that she had survived and she had killed him instead. Seeing Damon show up at the station afflicted by Klaus’ bite had brought all of those memories flooding back to her and she had sworn to herself that if there was anything that she could do to ensure that she wouldn’t lose another person she loved then she would do it. She hadn’t wanted Stefan to give up his life in Mystic Falls but there hadn’t been any other choice. Claire knew that there were plenty of people in Mystic Falls who probably wouldn’t mind too much if anything happened to Damon after everything that he had done but even though he annoyed her to no end sometimes he was still one of the most important people in her life and she didn’t know what she would do if anything happened to him. For a long time she had tried to deny that there was anything else going on between them but now she was done pretending and clearly so was he. She had no idea what was going to happen that evening but the truth was that she was looking forward to finding out. Just the fact that Damon had gone to so much trouble to get dressed up, pick out a dress for her and plan something was enough to make her see how seriously he was taking this and if she was honest that meant the world to her. She couldn’t deny that she was nervous about the idea of potentially moving from friends to something more but this wasn’t a spur of the moment thing. It had been building between them for a long time and she had come so close to losing Damon so she knew that she didn’t want to waste any more time and it seemed that he didn’t either so she knew that the time was right to do this. “It would have been cruel to both of us not to,” Claire shrugged. While it was true that she hadn’t wanted to admit to herself how she felt about Damon only to end up losing him pretty quickly afterwards she also hadn’t wanted him to go without knowing the truth. It had taken a bite from Klaus to get him to tell her that he felt something more for her and she knew that she would have regretted it if she hadn’t come clean and told him that it was mutual. As Damon spoke again and said that she was stuck with him now Claire felt a smile touch her lips. “I’m going to hold you to that,” she assured him. She knew that Damon had a habit of rubbing people up the wrong way, after all he’d done that to her more times than she could remember, but he was trying and that counted for a lot as far as she was concerned. She had come so close to losing him once already and she knew that she didn’t want to go through that again. Claire gave Damon’s hand a squeeze as he brushed his thumb over her knuckles and she couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke again. “I think the sight of you in that suit is more likely to have jaws dropping but I think the real shock will be how far you’ve come since you arrived in town,” she admitted. This was the Damon that she had started getting to know in London but it was a Damon that she was pretty sure the residents of Mystic Falls had yet to meet. She knew that Damon wasn’t proud of some of the things that he had done since arriving in town but most of the time he was able to own up to his mistakes and she knew that was the main thing. “It does although if you think we’d be doing anything other than actually sleeping then you would have to wait until at least our fourth date,” she said, a smile playing its way across her face as she looked over at him. “I’m old fashioned like that.”DAMON SALVATORE

Whoever had come up with the phrase that your life flashed before your eyes when you were dying hadn’t been joking. The first time he’d died, on a dirt round not a dozen miles away from the blacktop they were now driving along, there hadn’t been enough time for anything more than a brief flash of disappointment when Giuseppe had blasted a musket ball through his chest. This second time around Klaus had made sure he was going to suffer. Undoubtedly the Original Hybrid had thought he’d tangle himself up in some sort of web of guilt as the poison slowly made its way towards his heart. There’d been some of that, it had been hard to avoid thinking about what might’ve been when you were almost one hundred percent certain that your number was up, but there’d been more than that, those brief flashes in the memories that Claire had taken him back in to, there’d been happy moments there. The misery he’d sworn to make of Stefan’s life hadn’t been total and absolute, he hadn’t spent every damn minute of his life making Stefan regret the fact that he’d practically forced him to turn. There’d been reunions between the two of them, brief returns to how things had been before war and Katherine Pierce had come between them. London had been one of those times and although it was marked by his almost dying again, not everything there had been tainted with near death again. Claire had made sure of that, saving his ass for the first time, who honestly would’ve known that she’d end up doing it again, going against his wishes, calling Stefan, talking his brother into making the sacrifice. If he hadn’t felt something for her before then what she’d done when he’d thought it was going to be the end would’ve drop kicked Katherine right out of his heart.
There was room for something else now, other than the retribution and the willingness to throw others right under the bus to get who he wanted back from the torment she’d supposedly been in for almost a century and a half. Damon supposed that he could’ve done just that now to get others in town to see him in a different light but with Claire he’d never had to. Her brutal honesty and her inability to let him just be an asshole meant that things were very different between them. Damon nodded his head slowly, his mouth curving into a faintly sardonic line. ”It wouldn’t have been the first time someone would’ve accused me as cruelty,” he said honestly. But this would’ve been worse, the part of him that felt an overwhelming rush of relief when Stefan had arrived had known that. He’d been given a second chance to do this right and Damon knew he wasn’t likely to get a third. ”You better,” he managed with a trace more humour in his voice. ”That holding part, that’s especially appealing.” He winked at her, a thick veneer of teasing on his words that belied the feeling beneath. This wasn’t just a joke tonight, it was something more real than he’d felt since he’d first laid eyes on their guest at the estate. ”Mm,” Damon murmured, his brows furrowing slightly. ”I don’t know how many of them are ready to see that. The suit’ll be a shock enough.” It had been when he’d had to attend the events in town. For a moment he’d been pretty damn sure that Elena’s heart had skipped a little beat for him. Having Katherine fool him into a kiss had just confirmed one thing for him, he wasn’t stealing his brother’s girlfriend this time around. He had his own. Dark brows rose, Damon’s lips curling into a wolfish grin. ”You know you just made that sound like a challenge?” he asked. ”Just a sleepover tonight though, cross my heart and hope to die.” He didn’t peel a hand off of the wheel though, just continued to smirk faintly. Maybe it was time he did things a different way, instead of constantly charging ahead at a speed that left others reeling behind him.

Claire hadn’t been on a date for a long time, not since she and her husband had been courting in fact. She knew that he could have moved on at any point after she’d left her husband and children behind but if she was honest it had never felt right, at least not while they were still alive. She had refrained from checking in on them after that but a part of her had still known that it just wouldn’t feel right until they were gone. Instead she had lived her life for decades on the outskirts of society, never truly letting herself live among those around her out of fear of losing even more people that she loved. She knew that she could have reached out to the Salvatores long before now and perhaps it would have been a lot easier if she had done but deep down she had felt ashamed of what she had become. She had never wanted to become a vampire like Violet, she loved her sister but towards the end the Violet she had known and loved had been replaced by a monster thanks to the sirebond. She had known that her experience of being a vampire could be different, after all she didn’t have to worry about being made to do something and having no chance of saying no, but she still hadn’t been able to bring herself to reach out. Instead she had lived her life alone, only ever forming a few friendships that never seemed to last too long until the last few years when things had started to change. From the moment she had befriended Ares in the police training academy she’d had one person that she could always count on no matter what and she was doing her best to be that same person for him as well. Now with the Salvatores back in her life as well she finally felt like things were turning out the way that they were supposed to and as far as she was concerned being able to finally explore what was going on between her and Damon was the icing on the cake. For a while it had looked like they weren’t going to get that chance but thankfully Stefan had made the deal that she’d known he would in order to save his brother and even though it had meant that he had spent years travelling with Klaus while they tried to create hybrids Damon’s life had been spared and she knew that Stefan would have made the same decision all over again, as would she. Damon had ended up getting on her nerves a lot at first but she had soon realised that it was because they were alike in some respects. She knew what he and Stefan had been through together and even though she was pretty sure there were still some things that they needed to work through they were in a much better place now than they had been when she had first met them both and for that she was grateful. “Maybe not but it doesn’t have to be like that now,” she assured Damon gently. She knew all about what he had been like when he’d first arrived back in Mystic Falls but she could see that he wasn’t proud of that now. If anything he seemed to regret his actions and she honestly hoped that he would learn from his mistakes and do things the right way now that he had been given another chance. Rolling her eyes playfully as he said that he like the sound of the holding part, she couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke again. “It probably would but you’d certainly end up turning more than a few heads,” she grinned. Damon was a good looking guy, something that he often liked to play on, but seeing him dressed up like this was something else entirely and knowing that he had done so for her was enough to make Claire realise just how lucky she was. This Damon that she was seeing now was the one that she had always known was in there somewhere, it had just taken time to coax that Damon out of hiding. “It wasn’t meant to,” she laughed as Damon said that she’d made the just sleeping thing sound like a challenge. She honestly didn’t want to rush into things, nor did she want to become just another of Damon’s conquests, so she really did want to do things right this time. “You don’t mind taking it slow, do you? It has been a long time since I last did this.” The last time there hadn’t been anything else before marriage in fact and while she knew that she wouldn’t want to wait that long again she knew that she at least wanted to make sure that this really was as right as it felt at the moment. For two people well out of their depth with the notion of a date Damon would’ve said both of them were doing pretty damn well. The dress had been met with smiles, had looked incredible, and despite the air of mystery he’d laid over this entire thing Claire seemed happy enough to go along with it. They’d flounder together, like they had through the bite that had nearly prevented this from happening in the first place. Claire had taken the lead there as the poison had slowly burned its way through him, heading for his heart and the sort of agonizing death that Klaus Mikaelson had undoubtedly aimed for. There’d been a certain amount of arm twisting to the whole thing, although that hadn’t been solely on the Hybrid’s part. Claire had used what he’d started to admit to finally to twist his arm too, that bitten poison ridden heart, dangling an exploration of what they felt for each other to draw him through the whole thing. After that there was no way he was stepping away from the chance of an actual date, the sort of thing Katherine had managed to deny him of for three entire lifetimes. He’d made himself a vow at that point, if he could get through the bite, if Stefan managed to get the cure to him before he was dragged out of town to go and act as playmate to the most sociopathic Mikaelson, then he’d stop cutting himself off from everything he’d denied himself while he’d been wandering the world, making his little brother’s life a misery and wracking his brain for a way to get back the woman he loved. Damon Salvatore was now the boy who’d lived and this was him actually living what most would consider the right way.
With the right woman. A wise woman who actually cared about him, a woman who knew him. Claire had seen the worst side of him and she’d seen the best and still she was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. She believed he could pull himself up by his bootstraps while half of the rest of town believed he’d never fight his way free of the stink that seemed to clink to him. This time he shook his head, taking her assurances for what they were and not an admonishment. ”It doesn’t but they’re not going to change their minds about me over night. Still got a lot of doubt coming my way.” A lot of distrust and hatred too, mostly from those he’d majorly wronged in this town. It didn’t mean he wasn’t going to stop trying to get them to come around to his side and offer up a little forgiveness. Amusement was quick to wipe away the momentary pall of grim that fell over them, gleaming in the grin that flashed back up at her laughter. ”We’ll have to see. Worst case scenario I have an ambulance waiting on hand for the fainters.” And an eye roll ready for the doubters, of which there would be just as many. They’d have warnings galore about him for Claire but she’d known him longer, better, than most and if there was anything to hear she’d already heard it. She knew better than to entirely taking his flirtation at face value. Damon made a low sound in his throat as she laughed off his question. ”It sounded like one,” he told her honestly. He wasn’t about to push his boundaries though, not when this was something so much more than he’d had before. Peeling his hand off of the wheel now, he reached for hers, lifting it to touch his lips to the back of her knuckles before he gave a brief shake of his head. ”Slow’s my middle name now. Total first time for me, remember, I don’t want to rush through it.” More importantly he didn’t want to shove his way hard enough through this whole dating thing that he had Claire balking in the way she had when the time had come to come and meet him and Stefan here in Mystic Falls the first time around.

Even though Claire was still certain now that killing Violet to stop her from killing Stefan was the right thing to do, she still felt guilty about it. Claire was the older sister, she was supposed to protect her younger sister and she knew that she had failed miserably in that respect. She had moved from London to America after that and she had eventually fallen in love and started a family of her own but a part of her had always found herself doubting that she deserved such happiness. In a way it had felt like she was perhaps getting just what she deserved when she’d had to leave her family behind after she became a vampire and she had been keeping everyone else at arm’s length ever since. There were a few people who had managed to make it past her defences but none had managed to make her feel anything more than friendship or a familial connection until Damon came back into her life. If she was honest there had been something there between them all those years ago in London but she had refused to admit it then and she had done the same thing while he was afflicted by Klaus’ bite. She hadn’t wanted to open herself up like that again only to end up losing the person she’d let herself care about the same way that she had lost so many others before but now she knew that Damon was alright and there wasn’t anything stopping them from exploring what was going on between them. They hadn’t spoken about it since that day but it had always been there at the back of her mind and it seemed that it had been the same for Damon as well. She wouldn’t have blamed him if he had wanted to forget about the fact that he’d asked her out while he’d been on his death bed and she certainly wasn’t going to hold him to it but he didn’t want to forget about it after all and if she was honest that meant a lot to her. She could already tell that Damon had put a lot of thought into the evening but he was keeping annoyingly tight lipped about it. He had ended up being spot on with the dress and if the rest of the date was anything to go by then she didn’t doubt that it was going to be perfect. “Just keep your chin up and be the person you want to be. They’ll come around eventually,” she assured him. She knew that Damon had a lot to make up for when it came to the residents of Mystic Falls but it was clear to her that he wanted to do that and that meant a lot as far as she was concerned. It wasn’t going to be easy, a lot of people were probably always going to have doubts in the back of their minds, but Damon wasn’t the same person that he had been when he’d arrived in town and she knew that at least some would start to see that sooner or later. “Something tells me there’ll be plenty of them,” she grinned. She couldn’t deny that Damon scrubbed up well and the image of him in a suit was one that she hadn’t seen for such a long time so she knew that she was going to have to commit it to memory now. Claire had never been the kind of person to judge a book by its cover, she knew that there was so much more to Damon than good looks and piercing blue eyes and she couldn’t deny that she was looking forward to getting to see a different side to him that evening. Rolling her eyes playfully as he said that her words had sounded like challenge, Claire couldn’t help but feel relieved when he said that he didn’t want to rush this. “That’s good because I don’t either,” she admitted, her smile returning as he kissed her knuckles. “You’re not just a random guy that I’d never see again if things didn’t work out, you’re one of the most important people in my life and I want to make sure that this is right. I don’t want to mess up what we already have, if anything it would be good if we could make it even better.” Either way she wanted Damon to continue being a part of her life and taking it slow would be a good way for both of them to ease back into this so she knew that it was the right decision, she just hoped that Damon wouldn’t end up changing his mind. He’d had plenty of practice putting on a face over the years. Luring people in had been one of Katherine’s first lessons, her centuries of wrapping people around her wicked little finger obviously making her an absolute expert on dangling the lure under people’s noses. Damon was prepared to say he’d learned from the master but the truth was that Katherine had only managed to give him a couple of brief masterclasses on it all before the Founding Fathers had cottoned on to just what the vampires were up to in town and had put a stop to it by shooting the two love sick fools who’d found themselves in love with one of them and drugging and sealing what was supposed to be the entire lot of them before they’d burned the church down on top of them. Luckily, or in some cases, not so luckily, Giuseppe and his cronies had failed in every step of their plan. It must’ve stuck in Giuseppe’s throat to see Stefan standing in front of him and practically choked him in those last few minutes of life as Stefan had started to feed from him. Even if they hadn’t been caught up in the purge Giuseppe never would’ve come around to his son not being the man he’d always wanted him to be. Once a failure, always a failure. It was quite possible that those in town now who hated his guts were going to be just as stubborn but Damon wanted to think that each of them had some sort of crack in their façade that he could slither through. He’d managed it with Claire hadn’t he? Even after aiming a hefty dose of suspicion in her direction when he’d found her playing pool at the Grill. That left him with a little hope for everybody else. There was going to be a hell of a lot of convincing to be done but he’d take that one step at a time. Each glimpse of Damon Salvatore as a reformed man would do something for him. The penitent man always won in the end didn’t he?
The penitent man might’ve felt a little out of his depth earlier but the way his plan had come together and worked had left him right back on solid ground again. He had no intention of making sure everybody in Mystic Falls got a glimpse of this date tonight, in fact he’d intended the absolute opposite but eventually they’d all get a look at this new Damon. Whether or not they trusted it was another matter. ”I guess I’ve got a couple of decades to wait around for it to happen…” he mused. Not necessarily in Mystic Falls, not when eyebrows shot up around here at someone looking a little too youthful a little too long, but he had the time he was going to need to slowly melt the ice cold anger of people like Bonnie Bennett. Pretending to preen at the compliments, showing a little more of the old Damon, he made a low humming sound. ”Just a couple of hundred. Should probably make sure the hospital’s got plenty of staff on hand.” There were plenty of those around on quiet days, it made it a whole lot easier on days when Mystic Falls got crazy. Fingers crossed this wasn’t one of those days, it was the last thing he wanted when they were moving away from that. Heading out of town it was easy enough to leave it all behind, to start taking a new path together. ”Pigeon steps together then,” he promised, keeping a hold on her hand as he dropped them both down to rest on his thigh. ”If what we have now doesn’t work out you won’t lose me. No matter what we keep that and we build on it. Strong foundations, giant sky scraper going on top, bigger than anything Mystic Falls has ever seen.” Something built from plans that were out in the open from the start. No hiding, no twisting things up behind the scenes until they were all knotted up. Seeing the turn he wanted up ahead Damon slowed slightly, pulled off onto a slightly more rural road leading towards the lights of a town visible up ahead.

Claire had felt sure that she would finish her shift with Ares and then end up having a couple of drinks with Damon or Stefan but the truth was that this was already so much better. She loved the life that she had been building for herself ever since she moved to Mystic Falls and she loved the fact that the people she cared about all seemed to be in one place. After isolating herself for such a long time it was refreshing to know that she didn’t have to do that this time around. She had felt guilty in a way for getting to live after she had taken Violet’s life from her and for a long time she had felt like she didn’t deserve to have the chance to be happy after that. She had been fortunate enough to find happiness with her husband and children but that too had been ripped away from her and she had been reluctant to get close to anyone else after that. Ares had somehow managed to get under her skin and a few others had along the way as well but after reuniting with Stefan and Damon she had realised that it was possible for her to live her life and be happy without having that ripped away from her. Damon had pulled through Klaus’ bite thanks to Stefan and after some time away with Klaus, Stefan too had returned home. No matter what the brothers seemed to go through they always seemed to get through it and she was honoured to be a part of that. She had never expected things to take the turn that they had with Damon, however. The conversation they’d had while he was inflicted with the bite had been an honest one and it had explained a lot of things but they hadn’t talked about it since then and she had been certain that he hadn’t wanted to. As it turned out she couldn’t have been more wrong and for once she was more than happy to admit that. “You won me over in less than that so knowing you, you’ll be able to do the same with them as well,” she grinned. Claire knew that the others in town didn’t necessarily trust Damon after the mistakes he’d made in the past but he really was trying and as far as she was concerned that counted for a lot and she hoped that in time others would start to see that too. As he spoke again, she felt a smile touch her lips. “I’ll make sure to send word, don’t you worry,” she laughed. Seeing Damon dressed up like this really wasn’t something that she was used to but she couldn’t deny that it was more than a little flattering to know that he had gone to so much effort for her. Running her thumb along his thigh as he spoke again, Claire nodded. “I’m going to hold you to that,” she assured him. She knew that she liked Damon as more than a friend and she knew now that he liked her too but that wasn’t any guarantee that things would work out between them. She wanted to give it a try, after all they had been through she knew that they owed it to themselves to see where this things between them was going to go, but the last thing she wanted was to end up losing him altogether if it didn’t work out so she was glad that he seemed determined to make sure that that didn’t happen and she knew that she would do the same in return. As Damon pulled the car onto a different road, Claire’s eyes turned to the view ahead of her and she studied it carefully for a moment. “Now will you finally tell me where we’re going?” she asked as she turned her gaze to look at him once more. Coming home from the war Damon had never expected to be greeted with open arms by Giuseppe but he had hoped for some sort of hero’s welcome, even if it had only been from his own brother. Any sort of celebration over what he’d done or what he’d escaped had, however, been disrupted by Katherine. She’d been stirring things up from the moment their eyes had met and for a century and a half afterwards she’d continued to do that. After she’d broken his heart he’d found himself running again. This time it was supposed to have been towards something but not away from it but sitting in that motel room with news that Elena was in danger rolling around in his head Damon had known he was fooling himself. Things were never going to be as cut and dried as he wanted. You had to work for things, to fight for them instead of against them. Coming home to Mystic Falls he’d done that against the Mikaelsons and nearly died for his attempt. He could’ve wallowed in it afterwards but hell, even if he’d tried to, burying what he’d said when he’d thought he was dying, Claire wouldn’t have let him. She’d been his welcome wagon, his cheer leading squad, his counsellor and the key to kicking the sticky remnants of Katherine out of his heart, all wrapped up into one. Some would’ve called her insane but that had never been her.
Claire was a realist, a straight shooter, a freaking warrior princess that would’ve put Xena to shame, and she wasn’t going to ruin date night with him sitting, grumbling about the new and improved Damon Salvatore not being accepted in town. He was determined to have them all changing their tune about him eventually but some little voice in his head was still questioning about whether or not he’d manage it. Obviously Claire wasn’t thinking the same. Damon’s smile grew crooked as he shook his head. ”I won you over a hundred years ago, doesn’t count the same.” He hadn’t killed Claire’s sister or her grandmother or compelled her into playing his happy little girlfriend. The others had reasons for still wanting his blood to boil. It was going to take actions to change that, not the pretty words that were always on his lips or the pretty face above the perfectly cut suit. As Claire promised to keep people on hand at the hospital for the swooners all the same, Damon patted her arm. There was only one woman he’d wanted to see that look on and she was pretty stunned tonight. If this went the way he wanted, he’d be stunned too. Damon squeezed the hand running over his leg gently. He was good for it. First step, this little hidey hole. Damon had turned onto the right road, heading towards the little two bit town. The Camaro zipped through it, only slowing on the other side as he pulled into the driveway of what looked like a plantation house set back from the road. ”Here,” he told her simply. ”It’s ours for tonight … with its staff…” Damon turned off the engine, slipped out of the car and headed around to her side to offer his hand.

Growing up as an older sister was one thing but after becoming the woman of the house after her mother died Claire’s life had changed for good. Her father had tried to protect her from what her life was about to become but it had been inevitable during the time they lived in. Things were so different back then and despite the fact that she was only a child herself there had been certain expectations that she’d had to live up to and ever since then she had been doing her best to put the needs of others before her own. It became a little easier when her father remarried, it wasn’t expected at all and her new step-mother had hated both her and Violet to begin with but in the end they had made it work because they had realised that they all loved Claire’s father and that realisation had helped them put their differences aside. Claire had grown so used to taking care of others that she had almost forgotten what it was like to have her own dreams and aspirations for a while. It had come as a shock when her father had encouraged her to move to London and follow her dream of becoming an actress and it had shocked her even more when Violet had been encouraged to go with her so that she could become a singer. For the first time in a long time Claire had put what she wanted ahead of everything else and it had worked out for a while but a chance encounter with Henry and Samuel had changed everything and it wasn’t long before she was left alone after losing her sister. Claire had struggled to put herself first after that but she had eventually crossed paths with her future husband and they had been blessed with two children. Things had been going far too well for them until Lord Ainsley showed up and if she was honest she was a little worried that things right now were too good to be true as well. Claire had already had her life turned completely upside down twice and both times she had lost the people that she loved most in the world. It had been her choice to leave her husband and children behind after she became a vampire but she had stayed as long as she could before finally making the decision to leave them behind when people began to notice that she wasn’t ageing. She had compelled them to move to a new town and start over, even compelling them to believe that she had died years before so that they would have the chance to move on. She knew that she should have taken that chance herself but something had always held her back until now. It had taken running into Damon again to start her thinking that perhaps she did deserve to be happy after all and even though she was still scared that they would do something to mess up their friendship she knew that she would regret it if they didn’t give things between them a chance. It had taken them a long time to admit that there was even something more there between them, too long almost, but now everything was out in the open and she knew that she wanted to see if there was a chance for them after all. “I wouldn’t quite go that far,” Claire grinned as Damon said that he won her over a hundred years ago. “You had your charms, I’ll give you that, but you still got on my nerves more than anyone else ever has.” She had never been the kind of person to give in to everything that Damon had wanted and she knew that it had probably driven him crazy but that was just who she was. As they turned down a road to a little town Claire couldn’t deny that she was surprised but it wasn’t much longer before they reached their destination and Claire’s eyes widened in surprise as she took in the building before them. Taking the hand that Damon offered, Claire climbed out of the car. “You really are full of surprises, aren’t you?” she asked, a smile working its way across her face as she turned to look at him. “You can’t tell me you go to this much trouble for all the girls.”DAMON SALVATORE

Soft. It was a word spat at him with an alarming regularity by Giuseppe. Surprisingly Stefan, who had always been more tender-hearted, the poet, the intellectual, had avoided the epithet. Perhaps to their father all of that side of his youngest son was excusable. Stefan had the brains to take over the estate, he had the backbone, the charm, the ability. His eldest son had been nothing but a failure. Damon knew that he could’ve returned from the war an all-conquering hero, second only to Robert E. Lee and it still wouldn’t have been enough. It was that scarred, soft young man that Katherine had sunk her claws into. The disappointment who’d been determined to tear himself away from his father and please the man all at the same time. She’d offered him a way to rise above all of that and if she’d lived through the fire at the church that had supposedly killed him Damon was pretty sure he would’ve grabbed at the chance of immortality. Instead he’d hated his brother for years for forcing his hand, keeping up that animosity even after he’d learned that Katherine might have lived through it all. She’d been the queen of pitching brother against brother. Even after it had been revealed she’d never been trapped Katherine had continued to stir, to try and dig those claws in deep again to make sure that the idiot who’d fallen hook, line and sinker for her twisted words never managed to get away.
Now who was the failure? Despite Katherine’s attempts to keep him twisted around her little finger and Klaus Mikaelson’s twisting of Stefan’s arm with the sinking of his fangs into his big brother’s arm, he was still here. Maybe that soft, hurting Damon was still underneath he shell that’d hardened up around him but there wasn’t quite as much shame clinging to it all anymore. Claire had shown him he didn’t need to be that man, that he wasn’t beyond redemption. Maybe there were some that believed the same about Klaus Mikaelson, they just weren’t in this car. Not bothering to hide the smirk that pulled at his lips, Damon arched a brow at Claire. ”Oh I know all this charm rubbed off on you back then.” Chuckling lightly, he thought back to the image he’d shown her, of how she’d looked when he’d walked into that hall and had seen her up on the stage. ”That hasn’t changed. It’s how I managed to win you over. Persistence, good looks and the sort of irritation itching powder can’t match.” The fact that she’d managed to put up with him, then, now, and still see the good in him had been a shock if he was being honest. It was his turn to return it, and more. What Claire had done for him after he’d practically crawled to her had been nothing short of miracle. This was the first step in making up for it. Letting the Camaro coast a stop Damon’s grin only grew. He helped her out of the car, his fingers lingering on hers. ”I have to be, can’t stop being obvious now.” Snorting softly Damon tugged her close, offering his arm to lead her into the house. ”What other girls? Trust me. This is a Damon Salvatore nobody else has ever seen.” Forget a new leaf, he was turning over a new damn tree. It was about time after all.

Going on a date with Damon Salvatore wasn’t something that Claire had ever thought she would be able to say that she had done. For such a long time the two of them had been friends and more often than not he had ended up getting on her nerves but she hadn’t wanted to admit that there was so much more to it than that. It had taken him getting bitten by Klaus and almost dying for the two of them to admit that there was more than friendship between them but they hadn’t spoken about it since or about the fact that they had kissed so she had felt sure that it was something that he either hadn’t remembered happening or that he would much rather forget. She never would have expected him showing up at the station with such an incredible dress ready to take her out of town for their first date and she would be lying if she said that she wasn’t a little nervous. Ever since she was turned she hadn’t been good at letting people get close to her with the few exceptions being Ares and Kaitlyn. With Kaitlyn gone her list of friends wasn’t that long and she knew that she didn’t want anything to happen to ruin what she already had with Damon but he had assured her that no matter what happened their friendship came first and she knew that she had to trust him that even if things didn’t work out between them then they would still have that to fall back on. If she was honest she couldn’t remember the last time she had been on a date so she wasn’t too sure what to expect from the evening but considering the trouble that Damon had gone to already she had a feeling that he had something special in mind. In a way she knew that this was a big step for both of them. When she and Damon first met he had been so hung up on Katherine and that had still been the case when they bumped into each other in Mystic Falls after she’d moved to town too. He had loved Katherine for most of his life and Claire would be lying if she said that she wasn’t worried that she would never be able to match up to that but this time she knew that she needed to put her fear to one side and see what was going to happen because she knew that she would regret it if they missed this chance. If Stefan hadn’t arrived when he had done then she knew that they wouldn’t have been able to do any of this and she knew that it was something worth fighting for. “I wouldn’t go that far,” Claire laughed. “You always had a way of getting under my skin but I’m not sure that that’s necessarily a good thing,” she teased. For a long time she had tried to convince herself that she only tolerated Damon for Stefan’s sake and perhaps it had been like that to begin with but over time they had become friends in their own right and she knew now that she wouldn’t have it any other way. As he explained how he thought he’d won her over, Claire couldn’t stop a smile from working its way across her face. “That might have been a part of it,” she conceded. The way he’d won her over the most was when he hadn’t even been trying but she knew that she wasn’t ready to let him know that just yet. “That’s true, it wouldn’t be any fun if you did,” Claire admitted, slipping her arm through the one that Damon offered before reaching over and giving his hand a squeeze. “I’m glad I get to be the first,” she admitted as they headed into the house. She honestly hadn’t expected him to do something like this but she would be lying if she said that she didn’t feel flattered that he had done. “This place is beautiful,” she admitted, looking around them as they moved deeper into the house. If he’d really desperately needed advice on tonight he could’ve spoken to Tall, Dark and Grumpy, further than he had, he supposed. This had been out of his depth for so long that he hadn’t been sure how to pull it all together at first but Damon figured if others had managed it, if a thousand year old vampire who’d grown up in a time where a date was probably a rendezvous at the hickory tree down by the creek, with the entire village just a few hundred metres away, then it shouldn’t have been impossible for him. It’d just been … his entire life … since he’d tried doing something like this. Damon had known he just had to rip off the band aid, jump in at the deep end, go for broke. The time for delaying and nursing his crushed heart were over and done with. Honestly, it didn’t feel like he was doing a bad job of it for a beginner. It had all gone down well, whatever road blocks had been in the way before Klaus had decided to force Stefan into a bromance by biting him, crumbling away. For over a hundred years Katherine had kept his heart in shackles, now it was free and it had made a choice that the rest of him was slowly beginning to handle. Damon knew better than to trust that trouble wouldn’t come to find them again, even Katherine sized trouble, but the bigger part of him was sure that it was easier facing all of that for and with someone than just raging against the whole thing like he was still that helpless kid who couldn’t stop the vicious constant waves of his father’s disappointment.
Giuseppe had to be spinning in his grave right now. A whirlwind of disappointment and hatred for what his two sons had become. He never would’ve taken any sort of blame for what had pushed the pair of them towards it. That was Giuseppe, never shouldering any blame at all. It was a damn good thing his sons hadn’t taken after him that way. If this did go bad tonight, and he was pretty damn sure it wasn’t going to, then that would’ve all been on him. It wasn’t gonna go wrong though, not with Claire laughing that way next to him. Blue eyes twinkled through the screen of dark lashes as he glanced at her. ”I didn’t say it wasn’t the cheese grater kinda way of rubbing off,” he added sweetly. ”There was just definitely something there.” Some awareness that he’d always held back from. There was nothing to do that for now though. They’d stripped themselves bare, at least he had, when he’d been laying there in his bed at the boarding house, waiting for either death or his brother to come, whichever arrived first. ”I just knew I’d get to you enough in the end,” he teased, knowing it had been the exact opposite until he’d realized that there might not be time to work through everything at his snail’s pace. Damon drew Claire close as they hovered outside the house, his fingers lacing with hers as she squeezed. ”We’ll continue with the sneaking subtlety then.” Damon winked at her as they walked, his throat working as she said she was glad she got to be the first. After all this time that was really saying something. ”I’m glad too,” he said, hoarsely, honestly. ”I did good then?” There was more than a little pride in his grin as he lead her into a formal dining room. The large table had been stripped out for the night, leaving something smaller, more intimate in its place. Candlelight wavered in the air, glimmering across both the meal that was still steaming on the plates and the woman beside him. Damon tugged them both to a stop, drawing Claire in before he set his lips to hers, the kiss gentle and purposeful all at the same time.

A date with Damon Salvatore wasn’t something that Claire had ever thought that she would end up going on but here she was. There had been sparks between them the first time they met but she had always put it down to the fact that Damon had known exactly what buttons to push to get a reaction out of her. They hadn’t seen eye to eye back then and they still didn’t always see eye to eye now but they both enjoyed having the other in their life and she knew that she didn’t want to go back to the way things were before she moved to Mystic Falls. Back then she had lived a lonely life. She had kept to herself for the most part and hadn’t let herself interact with others too much out of fear that someone would figure out what she was and end up going after her but there was another reason as well. She had taken her own sister’s life to stop her from killing Stefan and she’d had to leave her husband and children behind so that they wouldn’t be in danger after she became a vampire. She’d lost so many people she cared about that she had been afraid to let anyone else in so she had avoided letting anyone get to know her too much just in case she lost them too. Ares was the first person who had managed to make it through her defences when they had gone through the police academy together and after finding out that he was a warlock it had given her the confidence to be honest with him about who and what she was as well. He had become her first true friend in a long time but she had still been a little reluctant to let anyone else in even after she moved to Mystic Falls. Running into Damon at the Grill had been a surprise and it had taken her a little time to get over the shock and the embarrassment that had come from him figuring out what she had become when she had been so adamant when she’d said goodbye to both Stefan and Damon in London that she hadn’t wanted to become a vampire but now she was finally learning to embrace it. She still opted for the animal diet she had picked up from Stefan but she was trying to have more fun with her long life now. She wouldn’t have blamed Damon if he had wanted to forget all about the fact that he’d pretty much asked her out while he was suffering the effects of the hybrid bite but she knew now that he hadn’t wanted that after all. Instead he seemed to have gone all out to make it something special and she couldn’t help but feel flattered about it. “There was but I don’t think either of us were ready to admit it back then,” Claire admitted. “You were still hung up on Katherine at the time if I recall,” she added, a teasing smile working its way across her face as she looked over at him. She understood, Katherine was his first love and he had spent years trying to save her from the fate that he had been so sure that she had been subjected to only to find out that she had never been in the tomb at all. That realisation would have hurt Damon and that was something that Claire never wanted him to go through again. “You certainly did that,” Claire said, her smile turning gentle as she looked down at their joined hands. This was so different to how the relationship had been between the two of them so far but she knew that that wasn’t a bad thing. It wasn’t until Damon had been literally on his death bed that he had revealed that he had feelings for her and she’d realised that she had those same feelings for him in return but now they were finally getting the chance to explore what more there could be between them and she knew that she wanted to enjoy every minute. Claire felt her breath catch in her throat as Damon said that he was glad she was the first person who got to see this side of him too. She had always known that there was more to him than he let everyone see but now he was sharing another side of himself with her and she knew that she didn’t want him to stop doing that. “Definitely,” she nodded as he asked if he’d done well. As he pulled them to a stop, Claire turned to face him and as his lips met hers she wound her arms around his neck as she kissed him back. DAMON SALVATORE

Other than Stefan Claire was probably the only person who would’ve honestly believed, bone deep, that he could move on from what had happened with Katherine. He’d been accused of still holding a torch for her, of sitting at home, nursing his shattered heart, just waiting for the moment when Katherine would sashay back in on her razor sharp heels to profess her love for him again. For about five minutes after she’d torn his heart out and stomped on it with those very stilettos maybe he’d considered it but if there was one conclusion he’d come to while he’d been out of town, nursing that broken heart, it was that he’d spent over a century pining for something that hadn’t been real in the first place. Katherine hadn’t ever loved him, there was a freedom in that. He could’ve gone anywhere, done anything, had a billion racy affairs. He hadn’t of course, he’d come crawling back here but Damon had known the minute the rumours about Elena had reached him that he couldn’t just walk away and leave them all behind then. If he’d been clairvoyant the temptation to do it might’ve been higher. A werewolf bite from the big bad Niklaus Mikaelson himself, Stefan handing himself over to save his big brother, coming within a hair’s breadth of dying … not fun. It had been the poke Damon had known he’d needed though. His freedom hadn’t ended when he’d come back to Mystic Falls, the world had opened up instead. It was just sheer luck that a tunnel ran straight through it, back to a time when he could’ve made a different choice and hadn’t.
There was no way to go back and take that path now but if there was one thing nearly dying had taught him it was that he shouldn’t pass the chance up again. Instead of feigning memory loss he’d set all of this up behind Claire’s back instead, with a little help from the King of the Grumps. A start over borne of a little wisdom. Damon smiled wryly at the reminder of just who he’d been taken with at the time. ”Hung up’s a mild way of putting it,” he said dryly. ”Maybe I should’ve got Klaus to bite me then. It might’ve sped things a little, pushed us both.” Or it could’ve actually killed him. That thought was shoved forcefully out of his mind now. This had all happened when it was meant to, no amount of wishful or nightmarish thinking would change it now. Bit by bit he’d worn her down, a little back then, a lot here since he’d found Claire in the Grill, playing pool like she hadn’t just strolled back into their lives. Seeing her there had given him a kick in the ass, Klaus carrying him the rest of the way. Too bad for her there was no going back now. ”Ares might have to put up with playing sidekick a little more often then,” he crooned softly. ”He’s probably spontaneously combusting now, just from me putting the idea out there.” Her partner would have to put up with it, Damon thought as Claire’s confirmation that he’d done the right thing had that smirk stretching over his face. His arms slid around her waist, drawing her in as she wound her arms around his neck and kissed him back. ”There’s music,” he crooned softly in her ear as he trailed his mouth down to her neck and then back up. ”First though, Madame Nightingale, may I interest you in a glass of champagne?” He pressed his lips just below her ear in punctuation.

Claire had thought that she would end up having a quiet evening at home after her shift came to an end or that she and Ares would end up heading to Campbell’s for a drink after work. She hadn’t for one moment thought that Damon would show up dressed in a suit that would make just about any girl swoon and with a box containing a dress that a lot of girls would kill for. Claire had liked dressing up while she was trying to make it as an actress as it had been a good way to get noticed and she had enjoyed the feeling that it gave her but after Violet died it had lost its appeal. It was at a party that she had first caught the attention of Henry and Samuel and she knew that if she hadn’t have gone then her sister might have lived. She also might never have met the Salvatore brothers and that at least was something that Claire knew that she would never want to take back but that didn’t mean that there weren’t still times when she found herself wishing that things could have turned out differently. She and Violet had moved to London so that they could pursue their dreams together and they had always had each other’s back the same way that Stefan and Damon did. Violet had always been her one constant companion and her closest friend but Claire had killed her in order to save Stefan. She knew that she had done the right thing, after all Violet wasn’t herself when she attacked him as someone else had been pulling the strings and had turned her into a Ripper so in a way she had been saving Violet as well but that still didn’t make it any easier to come to terms with. Even now there were still times when she felt guilty for moving on with her life but she knew that she wasn’t going to feel guilty about this date. There had been something between the two of them right from the start and for a while Claire had thought that it was nothing but irritation at Damon for the way that he treated Stefan but it was more than that. It had taken him almost dying for the two of them to admit that but they had come clean at last and if she was honest she was glad that he hadn’t taken the out that she had offered him when he’d had the chance. She hadn’t wanted him to but she hadn’t wanted Damon to feel obliged to go through with this either. Now she knew that it was what he wanted, however, she knew that she wasn’t going to pass up the chance to do this. “Maybe but it also could have gone in the opposite direction. You’re good at digging your heels in when you’re not ready to accept something.” They were both alike in that respect she supposed but she was glad that he had finally said something anyway. It had been difficult to say it back knowing that Damon might not make it through Klaus’ bite but he had and now they had the chance to see where this was going so she knew that it had definitely been worth it. “He might be but he owes me for the amount of times I’ve played third wheel to him and Remi when you and Stefan weren’t around,” she laughed. She had dragged one of the boys along with her whenever she could so that it wouldn’t be so awkward but it hadn’t been possible every time. Feeling Damon’s arms around her, Claire took a half step closer to him and felt her smile return as he said that there was music before offering her some champagne. The kiss just below her ear was enough to send a shiver down her spine and a sigh escaped her lips. “You’re not making this easy for me, are you?” she asked, already starting to regret what she’d said before about nothing more than sleeping over happening between them until at least their fourth date. She was determined to stick to her guns but the attraction was definitely there and had been for a long time and Damon wasn’t exactly on his best behaviour right now with the way he was kissing her. “Champagne would be great, Monsieur Salvatore.”DAMON SALVATORE
