If Klaus Mikaelson had gotten his way he’d have been a thousand miles from here, Stefan standing at his side, his closest confidant, the two of them surrounded by an eternally loyal army of hybrids. Sadly Klaus’ little plan had fallen at practically every hurdle – starting with Stefan’s pain in the ass big brother who hadn’t died like he should’ve done. Damon knew that his life had been the Original hybrid’s bargaining chip with Stefan and him croaking wouldn’t have gotten Stefan to flip the switch willingly but he also suspected Klaus wouldn’t have shed a tear if the cure hadn’t worked. It would have been one less person working against him. Leaning back against the fender of the Camaro, waiting for Claire’s scowly partner to deliver the box to her like a good little errand boy Damon found it all too easy to picture grief ripping through her. He’d seen it before, after all, when Claire had killed her own ripper of a sister to save his worthless hide. In her position he knew he wouldn’t have been able to do it. He’d sworn to make Stefan’s life an eternal misery but anyone else lifted a finger against his brother and they’d soon realise what a formidable force the Salvatore brothers could be. She had them both beat. When it had come to him being willing to die from the bite to stop Niklaus from getting his hands on Stefan Claire had been almost brutal with her willingness to hit below the belt … or square in the chest. Damon huffed out a breath of amusement at the thought. Fate had one hell of a way to prove to him that it was the time to move on from the harpy who’d fooled him into loving her for over a century. Message received, it was time to leave Katherine far behind.
Step one of the plan to move on was sticking to the promise he’d made the day he’d been dying. Paint the town red with Officer Devereux. Maybe letting her know they were splashing the scarlet around tonight would’ve been wiser but he was the man with the plan and that had started with getting Ares aside while Claire headed into the station at the end of their shift, all without her catching sight of him. Tall, dark and witchy had been extra scowly for a minute but a little talk mano al mano and a promise there was nothing more than an outfit and a card in the box and Ares had been on side. Who knew the cowardly lion had a heart big enough to do this for him after all. Damon straightened up, smoothing a hand down the front of a suit that would have done Elijah Mikaelson proud, as the door opened again. Ares had exited ten minutes before, flashing him a thumb’s up, this … this was a vision. Smiling at her, he ambled over. ”I take it he managed to mass it over without giving the game away,” he murmured, letting appreciative blue eyes drift over her. Damon held out a hand, using it to draw her in close enough to touch his lips to her cheek in the sort of greeting few others were ever treated to. ”I figure it’s about time we stop dancing around what I said when I was … you know …” He poked his tongue half out, crossed his eyes, pasting on a look of death far more comical than the brutal reality had been. His humour settled into a crooked smile. ”What do you say Florence Nightingale, you gonna come paint the town red with me tonight?” The fact that she might actually say no hadn’t even occurred to him until the question was off his tongue.

It had taken Claire a while to get her head around it but the truth was that by now pretty much everyone she once knew was gone. She had killed her own sister to stop her from killing Stefan when Violet had been doing Samuel’s bidding, her mother had died when she was young and her dad, step-mother and younger siblings all would have died of old age by now too. Even her husband and children would be long gone and that was something that she’d had to make her peace with. The only connections she had to her past and to the person she used to be were Stefan and Damon and she had almost lost them too. Damon had pleaded with her not to tell Stefan what was really going on with him so that his brother wouldn’t end up leaving with Klaus just to save him but in the end she had been unable to. She had already watched Violet die, she had known that she couldn’t just sit by and watch as Damon suffered even more than he already was and she wouldn’t have been able to forgive herself if she hadn’t given Stefan the chance to save his brother. If it had been Violet dying from a werewolf bite and Stefan or Damon had listened and hadn’t told her so that she wouldn’t do everything in her power to save her sister she knew that she wouldn’t have been able to forgive them no matter how noble their intentions were so she had known that she’d had to offer Stefan the choice. Damon had seemed sure that Klaus would make Stefan leave town with him and he had been right but now Stefan was right back where he belonged and Damon was alive so no matter what might have happened in the meantime she knew that everything had worked out in the end. It hadn’t been easy for Stefan to come back, that much she knew for sure, but at the end of the day his humanity had been turned back on and he was the person that he wanted to be again so she knew that they couldn’t ask for any more than that. That day Claire had had a relatively busy shift so a part of her wanted to just go home and curl up on the sofa; but an even bigger part of her was still filled with adrenaline so she knew that she was ready for whatever else the day sent her way. As her shift came to an end she made her way into the Sheriff’s Station and was a little surprised when Ares didn’t follow her through the door but she knew that chances were Remi had probably walked by and caught his attention instead. The two of them seemed to have finally managed to get their acts together so she really was happy for them. She had been a little wary of Remi at first after everything that Ares had told her about the woman and what they had been through in the past but he genuinely seemed happy and that was all that Claire had ever wanted for him so she hoped that it lasted for as long as possible. It was only as she was starting to pull her things out of her locker that Ares entered and handed her a box. Opening it slowly she was surprised when she pulled out the dress within but as she read the card she knew exactly who it was from. Getting changed quickly she emerged from the locker room and her eyes soon found her partner’s. “What do you think?” she asked, feeling her cheeks flush a little red before she took a deep breath and followed him outside. She would be the first to admit that she didn’t dress up that often but the dress was stunning and she had a fairly good idea what to expect when she got outside but even so she wasn’t prepared for the sight of Damon dressed up the way he was that day. He was handsome and that was something she had seen the moment she met him but there was something special about knowing that he had gone to the effort of dressing up just for her. “He did. I’ll have to thank him for it later,” she admitted, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. As Damon drew her close and kissed her cheek she felt her smile widen. “You scrub up pretty well,” she said, her smile turning teasing as her eyes met his. Even though it would be easy to get lost in the moment she still couldn’t resist the urge to tease him and as he said that it was time they stopped dancing around what he had said that day she studied him carefully for a moment. “Listen, if you want a get out of jail free card for anything you said that day I’ll understand. I know Katherine really did a number on you and you were dying so I won’t hold it against you,” she assured him. Deep down she knew that she didn’t want him to take back any of the things he had said, it was the first time that either of them had acknowledged that there was something between them and she wasn’t sure she was quite ready to go back to ignoring that just yet but she knew that she had to give him the option rather than have him regret it later. As he spoke again she nodded. “As if I could say no after all the trouble you went to,” she grinned as she held a hand out to him. “Come on, let’s go.”DAMON SALVATORE

This was a day he hadn’t seen coming until Claire had dangled a carrot under his nose. Over a hundred years ago he’d given his heart to a woman he’d foolishly thought honestly wanted it, not just wanted him for what he could give her there and then. Even while he and Claire had danced around one another in London he’d been chained to Katherine by her lies. Damon knew he should’ve been smart enough to see what was going on then, Katherine had always been manipulative, winding him tight around her little finger, but he’d been blinded by the future he’d seen with her – an immortal life, one free of his father, free of all the things that had held him back before. That future hadn’t factored for him believing that Katherine was slowly rotting in a tomb beneath Mystic Falls, it hadn’t factored in Stefan going full ripper or him despising his brother for all those years, it sure as hell hadn’t factored in the fact that Katherine didn’t have one warm, rosy feeling in that black rock of a heart of hers. If he had Damon would’ve bet that he’d have gotten around to this before now. They did say it took your life flashing before your eyes to get you to face up to things and he’d done that. Katherine could do her worst now and still wouldn’t manage to wheedle her way back in, she hadn’t only burned her bridges, she’d razed the entire damn ground her life was built on to the ground. Between them her and Niklaus Mikaelson had done the same for him and now he could build afresh on it. Forget Damon 2.0, this was the Damon Salvatore he should’ve been from the start.
Suave, sophisticated and wiser than any of them ever get him credit for. Sneaky too, as the dress had proved. He could’ve gone in there, handed it over himself and actually done a little inviting in person but Damon knew this way was better. Especially when Claire was making his choice of dress look that damn good. Blue eyes narrowed faintly, humour tugging at his mouth as he glanced off in the direction Ares had taken off. ”I’m pretty sure he’ll be asking for a kidney in return for this but I’m pretty sure it’s worth that much at least,” he drawled softly. The smile he got as he leaned in, that was worth his first born, even though there wouldn’t be one, on top. It was the cherry on top this whole thing. Damon tempered the smirk as he spread his arms a little to show off the suit. ”I scrub up amazingly well, when I have the right excuse to do it.” And this was one of those excuses. Few believed they existed but just like his charitable moments, they were just offered to a select few. Claire had gotten herself on to that list almost as soon as he and Stefan had met her and Violet and despite the years and the bumps in the road, she hadn’t marched off of it yet. Damon studied her right back, his brows drawing together as she seemed to try to do that now, fleet little feet skating towards the edge. He held up his free hand to cut her off before he used his hold on the other to pull her closer still. ”Get out of jail free cards don’t usually come with dresses that incredible. If I wanted out for anything that came out of my mouth in a moment of weakness I’d have said so already. I meant it all and what Katherine did just means that I think twice about that stuff now. I thought twice about this and … I want tonight.” In truth it was more than that, he wanted more than that, but it was a matter of taking it slowly, not rushing into things as he had done that night at the estate with the harpy. His words seemed to have done the trick, Claire agreeing in the end. Damon dropped into a half bow, reaching out to tangle his fingers with hers again. ”You weren’t gonna say no anyway. Your carriage awaits m’lady. Figured we’d go a little more upmarket than the Grill, I don’t know about you but Ric making doe eyes at me along the bar doesn’t scream date.” Rather than jumping in his side, Damon led Claire around to hers, opening the car door for her.

Claire knew how easy it was for things to be said in the heat of the moment and not really meant, hell she had been guilty of doing that herself on occasion. That was the reason why she hadn’t brought up anything Damon had said that night before and he hadn’t either so she had figured that he wanted to forget all about it. He had been dying and even though she had tried to stay positive so that he wouldn’t give up the truth was that she had felt terrified that he wouldn’t recover from it. She had already lost so many people in her life and she knew that that was natural considering she was doomed to outlive anyone human but even when she had been too ashamed to reach out to Damon it had still been a comfort to know that he and Stefan were out there in the world somewhere. The two of them were the closest friends that she had, they remembered her as a human and didn’t judge her for what had happened or who she had become, and that was something that she knew better than to take for granted. She had been tempted to bring up what had been said that night considering it had stirred feelings within her that she had convinced herself had never been there in the first place but Damon always seemed to have a habit of catching her off guard and he had certainly done so again that day. She had thought that she would end up knocking off work and heading home or perhaps spending some time with one of the brothers if they were free but the dress Ares had brought through to her could only have been given to him by one person and that act alone was enough to pique her interest as to what Damon was up to. “I’m sure he’ll want more than that, he knows I don’t get dressed up like this very often or for just anyone,” she teased. Claire had always preferred more practical clothing although she couldn’t deny that it was nice to break that habit every now and then. She couldn’t really remember the last time she had dressed up properly but Damon had given her the perfect excuse to do just that and he had picked an incredible dress to boot so she knew that she could make an exception for once. “I’m glad I could give you an excuse to do so,” she admitted. The sight of Damon in a suit was enough to take any woman’s breath away and no matter how much she tried to deny it the truth was that she was no exception. Damon was incredibly handsome, something that he knew all too well sometimes, but the fact that he had gone to the effort of dressing up for her really did mean a lot to her. Even though he had gone to so much effort she had known that she’d had to at least give him the chance to take back what he had said that night. She hadn’t wanted him to because it was the first time that he had given her the impression that there could be something more than friendship between them after all but a part of her had worried that he had perhaps done all of this because he hadn’t wanted to let her down. Damon meant a lot to her, more than she had ever let herself admit, but she knew that when it came to the people he let in then he didn’t really like to let them down no matter how much he might pretend that he didn’t care sometimes so it had needed to be said but she was still relieved when he said that he wanted that night. “I do too,” she admitted, a smile touching her lips as she kissed his cheek. “This is an incredible dress, I have to admit you have good taste,” she added, easily falling back into the teasing routine that had been theirs for so long. As Damon dropped into a bow Claire curtseyed in return before giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “Why thank you, kind sir,” she said, flashing him a smile as he opened the passenger door for her. “You’re right, that doesn’t really sound like a date. Where are we going?” she asked, curious to hear what he had in mind for them. DAMON SALVATORE

Most only saw their life flash before their eyes the once. On the brink of death, all those regrets, those rarer moments of joy running through their mind like a film reel on slow speed. Laying in the woods of Mystic Falls, his father’s bullet in his chest, Damon had rued going to war in the first place, had rued not telling Giuseppe where to stick his cause and his inheritance. At that point none of that had seemed important or worth it. Waking up with news that Katherine was gone, all he’d wanted to do was die. Stefan had forced him to transition and for a hundred and fifty years he’d hated him for it. Niklaus’ bite was a second bite of the cherry, so to speak, a chance to finally let go had he wanted to. The lady had protested too much though, not wanting Stefan to go and hand himself over just to save his big brother’s worthless ass. Claire hadn’t listened, hadn’t let him get away with that crap. It had frustrated him, just as it had done in London over a century before. Even when the dying man had sung his little swan song of ‘if only’, she hadn’t given up on him. On that brink, feeling the poison burning its way ever closer to his heart, it hadn’t been Giuseppe on his mind, or even Saint Stefan, it had Claire and the damn regret that he hadn’t opened his mouth or taken a leap a century earlier. Damon knew he wouldn’t have forced what they were on her but still … after … if … They’d still likely have ended up here because he wasn’t ready then, not like he was now.
He was sure there would be a price for this little set up but Damon was betting that Claire’s partner would be a little more subtle than snapping his fingers and demanding something outright. Letting out a dubious noise, Damon frowned slightly. ”I’m getting the feeling that dragging him into this is gonna come back and bite me on my very fine ass.” It had honestly surprised him that there hadn’t been more of argument about this in the first place. Maybe Tall, Dark and Suspicious had seen something that nobody else had. It hadn’t felt like a chore getting done up that afternoon, not a single eye roll in the mirror, just that faint flutter of nerves he’d thought himself impervious to. His mouth remaining hooked at the corner, Damon dropped his arms. ”This gives us both a chance to, at least for tonight. Don’t get too used to seeing me parading around in this stuff.” Special occasions only … and an excuse to see Claire in something other than her uniform, not that he had that much of a problem with that either. Her lure hadn’t started overnight, it’d been coming since long before he’d known he was ready for it, her itch growing under his skin until his hand had been forced and it’d looked like there wouldn’t be an opportunity for any of this. He knew she’d have called it off if she hadn’t thought he was serious, had given him the opportunity to do just that but he wasn’t letting her off so easy. ”I’m glad to hear it,” he told her, his voice smacking of honesty. ”I’ve always had good taste, at least when it comes to clothes.” Good taste in women was a new thing. Straightening up, Claire’s hand in his Damon led her over to the car, filling her in on their night, or as much as he was willing to reveal as they went. ”Someone’s a little impatient,” he crooned, waiting until he’d closed her door and walked around to open his own to say anything more. ”You honestly don’t want this to be much of a surprise? I’m shocked. Let’s just say for now, we’re heading out of town. Mystic Falls doesn’t exactly have what I was looking for.” A taste of London perhaps, something a million miles away from the trouble that seemed to plague Mystic Falls constantly lately. Cranking the engine, Damon pulled out of the sheriff’s station’s lot, heading for a road out of town.

When she was human Claire had always done her best to look out for those around her. She hadn’t always found it easy to trust people but after the lengths Stefan and Damon had gone to in order to help Violet save her from Henry and Samuel, Claire had found herself coming to trust the two brothers quite quickly. She could have parted ways with them then, choosing to go off on her own and live a normal life, but by that time her captors had already managed to sink their claws into her sister and Claire had known that she couldn’t turn her back on her best friend. The two of them had always been close and when they left Ireland she had made herself a promise that she would always watch over Violet and keep her safe. Deep down Claire knew that she had broken that promise but the moment the sire bond had been used against her sister and she had been made to kill all those people Claire had known that the Violet she knew was lost to her for good. She knew that Stefan had a Ripper side but with Violet it was different and she had known that she couldn’t let Stefan and Damon die just because she couldn’t accept that the sister she loved was gone. She hadn’t been able to save Violet so after that she had gone on to live a normal life the way she had always dreamed of but that too had been taken from her. One thing she had realised during her time as a vampire was that things often had a funny way of working themselves out because she had eventually made her way back to the Salvatore brothers, the two people in the world who knew her the best aside from Ares. She had been afraid to let them back into her life at first out of fear of losing them as well and she had come too close to losing Damon but he was alive thanks to Stefan and the younger Salvatore was back in Mystic Falls now too clearly haunted by everything that he had been through with Klaus but still the Stefan that she had known and admired all along. Everything that had happened had made Claire realise that even for vampires life was precious and she knew that she wanted to make the most of whatever time she had while it lasted so that she wouldn’t be left with any more regrets. The moment Ares had handed her the box containing the dress she had known who it was from and she had also known that she would regret it if she didn’t see where Damon was going with it. She wouldn’t have blamed him if he had taken the chance to go back on everything that he had said while he was afflicted with the bite from Klaus but he hadn’t, instead he seemed more adamant than ever that he had meant what he had said and that was enough to put any doubts that she might have had out of her head. It had always been easier to focus on the fact that Damon often had a habit of annoying her more than anyone she had ever met in her life than it was to let herself dwell on the fact that no matter how hard she tried to convince herself that he was just a friend she saw him as more than that. She liked him and that alone scared her. She knew what he had been through with Katherine and she knew that trouble that Katherine’s deceit had caused Damon and Stefan. For a long time she hadn’t thought that Damon would ever get over Katherine but now he seemed to want to try at least and she knew that she wasn’t going to turn him down. “It probably will but I’ll try and talk him into going easy on you,” Claire laughed. She knew that Ares would never seriously ask Damon for anything too bad but there was every chance that he might decide to try and trick Damon into thinking that he wanted something dangerous or impossible. As Damon spoke again, Claire couldn’t stop a smile touching her lips. “I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I think I have a soft spot for you in a suit so I might have to make sure we get to do this a little more often,” she said, brushing her hands over the front of his jacket as if to prove her point. Damon was handsome and that was something that he knew all too well but seeing him dressed up like this and knowing that it was all for her was something different entirely. “Hopefully I’ll do it justice tonight.” She really did love the dress and even though it was out of her comfort zone to wear something like it these days she actually enjoyed having a reason to dress up for once and she just hoped that she wouldn’t end up making a fool of herself. Climbing into the car, Claire offered him a smile as he closed her door before shaking her head. “You know I’m not good with surprises but I trust you so if you don’t want to tell me I’ll try and be patient,” she offered, knowing that that really was the best she could do. After everything that she had been through since leaving Ireland in the first place she’d had more than her fair share of bad surprises but she trusted Damon enough to know that this time would be different. What ifs could tear you up inside. Most lived with them, pulling them out from time to time, wrapping themselves up in those regrets like they were some sort of safety blanket against the pretty crappy choices they made in life. Damon had always scoffed at them, at the idea that you’d rue anything you did, but when the time had come and he’d felt that poison burning its way towards his heart in the way his father’s bullet had once forced the blood to pump from his body, that scoffing had stopped. There’d been a hell of a lot more time to regret what he hadn’t done this time, it wasn’t going to be a quick death, a bullet to still his lungs and heart in moments. Damon had known from the moment Klaus’ teeth had torn into his flesh that this was going to be slow and he’d been determined that the people he cared about wouldn’t have to watch him linger in agony. That determination hadn’t kept him from the station, where he’d fetched up, already weak from the Original hybrid’s bite. Weakness had put him there and it was Claire’s grit and guts that meant that Stefan had managed to secure him a cure. His brother had paid a hefty price for it, one that he knew he couldn’t pay him back for anytime soon. The thanks had stuck in his throat, the way it always did, usually buried beneath snark and facetiousness. He'd tried going that way with Claire as she’d laid on what was meant to be his death bed but as she’d done from the very moment he’d met her, she’d called him on it. A thanks would’ve been worthless afterwards, the only way to show that he was as good as his word, to show that all that he’d said that night hadn’t been last minute BS, was to make a grand gesture and prove just how he’d changed since Katherine Pierce had torn out what had remained of his dead little heart and ground it to dust.
Standing in front of the mirror tonight, blue eyes narrowed as he’d smoothed a hand over his tie, Damon had found himself laughing out loud at the idea of this happening with Katherine. She wouldn’t have walked out of that station bemused by what he’d done, those brown eyes would’ve been narrowed and flashing and sure as hell Katherine would’ve shot the messenger. Of course, being a warlock Ares could’ve half broken Katherine if she’d tried, hell, the guy could do it to him if he pushed too far but Ares had given in begrudgingly and that was going to require more thanks. ”It’d be appreciated,” Damon murmured, mock serious still, all beetled brows and troubled blue eyes. The act cracked eventually, Claire’s compliments melting the ice in a way that didn’t just have Peacock Damon strutting his stuff for the sake of it. His smile only had a trace of a smirk as he settled his hands back at Claire’s hips, her own moving over his chest. ”Oh really?” he asked, with a trace of keen interest. ”That good huh? I might just have to make it a more regular thing then.” The fact that she’d mentioned doing this a little more often meant that there was the intent to make sure this was more than just a little thank you dinner. Skimming his hand over the silken fabric on Claire’s hip Damon hummed. ”You already are,” he promised. ”It looks more incredible on than I’d imagined.” And what felt better was knowing that she’d put it on and stretched her comfort zone for him. Dressing up wasn’t that far a stretch for him, although denim and leather was always going to win over silk, but the rest of this, the date planning, the putting aside of Asshole Damon for a night was. Humming along the road out of town, Damon swiped a finger over his chest. ”I promise this one won’t come back to bite you in the ass. I wanted to do this away from Mystic Falls, away from all those prying eyes and judgy little faces. Didn’t want our first date ending up gossip for the mill.” It might still end up that way if Ares couldn’t keep his mouth shut but at least this way it was just the two of them exploring this thing and not the entire populace of Mystic Falls.

Claire had done a lot of things since becoming a vampire but the truth was that going on a date wasn’t one of them. For the most part she had kept to herself, not letting anyone get close enough to her to break her heart again if she lost them, but this time around things were different. In the past there had been a few people who had managed to break through her defences but now in Mystic Falls there were so many people that she cared about and she knew that she didn’t want to go back to the way things used to be. There was a time when she had been too scared to let anyone get too close to her after she lost Violet and then her husband and her children when she had to leave them all behind and she had sworn that she wasn’t going to go through that again but reconnecting with the Salvatore brothers had changed everything, as had learning that Ares was in Mystic Falls. Stefan and Damon had known her when she was human and for a long time she had been too ashamed to face them after becoming something that she had never wanted but everything that they had been through together had made them family in her eyes and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. As for Ares, they had been paired together in the police academy and it hadn’t taken long for them to figure out what each other was so it had been natural to strike up a friendship with him and that was something that she was glad they got to continue now. When it came to Damon, however, there had always been something more there between them but that was something that she hadn’t wanted to admit for a long time. It had been easy to ignore it while she was human, after all their lives were so different and after losing Violet she had known that she had needed to get as far away from that world as possible, but now she didn’t have that as an excuse. Now they were both vampires, both living in Mystic Falls, and it seemed that it wasn’t a one sided thing like she had always thought after all. There were times when Damon infuriated her, especially when he refused to see reason, but at the end of the day she had feelings for him and she was glad that she was finally going to get to explore them. It had taken Damon almost dying for them to figure out that they both felt the same way but now they could finally see what this was between them and she was looking forward to it. As Damon’s hands came to rest on her hips, Claire let her arms drape over his shoulders as she took a half step closer to him. “I’m game if you are,” she said, a smile working its way across her face as her eyes met his. She wasn’t used to seeing his side of Damon, at least not when his attention was directed at her, but it had to be said that so far she liked it. “Keep making me feel like a million dollars the way you are and I might decide to let you choose my outfit the next time we do something like this too,” she said, only half joking. Damon really had done amazingly well, the dress was incredible and it was something that she probably wouldn’t have thought to try herself but it seemed that he knew her better than she knew herself sometimes. Glancing over at him as they drove, Claire’s smile returned at the way he talked about it being their first date. “So this is a date, huh? And here I was half expecting this to be just a “thank you for not letting me die” dinner,” she teased, her smile turning playful as she looked over at him. “You realise you’d better make this good if you want a second date, right?” she added even though she doubted that it would be anything but amazing. Life in Mystic Falls was fundamentally the same as it had been when he’d tailed Stefan back here as his brother had made a play for being a normal, broody teenager, but with the reveal of Katherine’s betrayal and his brush with near death thanks to Klaus Mikaelson and his bromance with Stefan, something had definitely changed. Non-heart broken Damon wouldn’t have considered doing something as pedestrian and prosaic as dating but he wasn’t that man anymore. Things had changed and while most wouldn’t have believed that this particular leopard had changed his spots after a century and a half of doing everything possible to make people around him miserable in the name of a woman who hadn’t deserved anything he’d felt for her, he really wasn’t the same guy who’d killed Zach and compelled Caroline Forbes into being his lacky-blood bag girlfriend. Undoubtedly everybody involved was glad to see the back of the guy who’d done that to help free Katherine. Claire hadn’t been around to see that but Damon knew she’d seen some of the worst parts of him before, or at least had heard about them from people. She’d never entirely believed he was just that Damon though, she’d called him on it again and again, telling him he was something more than he was letting on. And maybe as he’d laid there dying, knowing that Stefan was going to sell his freedom to save his big brother, he’d started to see himself as something more too, someone who’d deserved more than what he’d gotten from Giuseppe and from the first woman to make him think she’d loved him. This time it was different, Damon thought as he studied the woman in front of him, Claire hadn’t lead him to believe that, hadn’t played games with him or led him around by his heartstrings. This was real honesty. Real … affection.
That was very new but watching Claire emerge from the station in the dress he’d bribed Ares into handing over, it’d felt good, like the first deep breath of air when you’d been suffocating. Drawing Claire closer Damon supposed in a way he had been, only for those hundred and fifty years, he hadn’t actually noticed. Damon grinned down at her with just a little pride in his smile. ”I think I just might be, although it might just ruin my reputation.” Or it would if any of them barring Claire, Stefan and Elena would actually believe this wasn’t just another ploy he’d come up with to pull of their strings. Trailing his hand over Claire’s dress, Damon made a low noise in his throat. ”Monsieur Salvatore, fashion mogul extraordinaire at your service,” he offered, knowing it wasn’t the dress that had Claire looking or feeling incredible, it was absolutely the woman within. The one he’d finally been able to see with those Katherine coloured spectacles finally taken off. How much of this, how much time with people had he honestly missed out on because of her? More than he could probably fathom but without Katherine in their lives, he probably would’ve ended up in an early grave over a century ago, put there in some way or another by Giuseppe. Instead he was free to live and this time around, he was taking every opportunity. Tapping his fingers on the wheel again, Damon shrugged. ”A “thank you for not letting me die” dinner would’ve been an evening in the Grill, on me of course, but this felt like it needed more, especially since you told me it was pretty much a non-subject unless I managed to beat death.” Thanks to Claire and Stefan he’d done just that, getting himself a second chance to see where this went. Dark brows rose, a smirk pulling at Damon’s mouth as he glanced at Claire. ”One non-incredible date and that’ll be it?” he asked. ”You’re proving a far harder woman to please than I thought. Guess I’m gonna have to put some real work into this.” And wasn’t that the complete opposite to his experience with Katherine. Then she’d been the one doing all the work, drawing him in until he was blind.

Claire had thought that her evening when she finished work would consist of either heading to Campbell’s with Ares for a few drinks or grabbing some food on her way home and having an evening alone. It had come as a surprise when Ares had entered the station holding a box containing an incredible dress but the moment she had seen it she had known that her evening was going to be a lot better than she had thought. Damon had promised her that he would take her out if he survived Klaus’ bite and it seemed that he hadn’t forgotten. She wouldn’t have blamed him if he had tried blaming it on the fever or if he had claimed not to have any recollection of anything that they had talked about that day but he hadn’t done either of those things. The fact that Damon had been dying had prompted them both to finally think about what was really going on between the two of them and if she was honest a part of her was glad that it was all out in the open now. For a long time she hadn’t wanted to admit how she felt about Damon even to herself but she knew now that she had just been too afraid to say anything and risk letting someone else get close to her like that again after being forced to leave her husband and children behind when she became a vampire. Since that day she hadn’t let any man get close enough for her to even start falling for them. She had her friendship with Ares but that had always been strictly just friendship especially considering that he was still hung up on Remi. She had thought that it was only friendship between her and Damon as well but she had been proved wrong about that. She genuinely cared about him and she knew that Katherine had done a number on Damon so she was more than happy to take things slow. “You mean your reputation as a womanizer? That might not be such a bad thing,” Claire teased. She knew all about what Damon had gotten up to when he first arrived in Mystic Falls and it hadn’t been pretty. The fact that he was willing to make this a regular thing between them was enough to make her see that he wanted to do things differently this time, however, and that alone was enough to excite her. The two of them had been friends for years but there had always been something more to it lying beneath the surface. They had both been reluctant to acknowledge it at first so it had taken them a long time to get to this point but now that they had she knew that she really wanted to see where things between them would end up. “You joke but I might take you up on that,” Claire admitted, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at Damon. It wasn’t very often that she dressed up these days and she wouldn’t have done it for just anyone but Damon had succeeded in making her feel like it was worth it and with the way he had been looking at her she knew that she wouldn’t argue with a repeat performance. “I did say that, didn’t I?” she laughed. “You wanted to give up so I thought you could use some incentive and I couldn’t open myself up to there being something more between us only to lose you soon after,” she explained, hoping that he would understand. It had been heartbreaking enough knowing that Damon was suffering so much and that she might lose him, she had known that she couldn’t let her feelings for him turn into something more until she knew that he was going to be alright. She had already lost her husband, her kids and her sister; she couldn’t stand to lose someone else she loved. As he spoke again she couldn’t help but smile. “I know you’re used to girls falling at your feet but you know me better than that,” she grinned. “I have high standards but I’m sure that if anyone can meet them, you can. Besides, the best things in life require a little effort.” Ever since they met she had seen a side to Damon that she was pretty sure he hadn’t seen himself and he seemed to be going all out already so she didn’t doubt that the date was going to be incredible. Reputations could be like a bad smell, hanging around and stinking up the joint. If he’d listened to Giuseppe his had never smelt of roses, in fact, who he was beneath the bluster had been enough to twist his father’s face up like he was something to be scraped off of his boot before he stepped into the house. A hundred and fifty years letting his love for Katherine twist him up hadn’t exactly removed any of the stink from it. Damon knew that only time was going to be able to do that now, this new Damon hadn’t yet been accepted by half the people in this town who’d been painfully familiar with the old Damon. No matter how many new leaves he managed to turn over, how many times he managed to save lost Donovan sized puppies or worked his ass off trying to save not only the girl Stefan loved from the Mikaelsons, certain people were always going to trust that leopards never changed their spots. He just couldn’t see people like Caroline or Bonnie coming to trust him any time soon and for the first time in forever, that actually niggled a little. Maybe not as much as if Claire hadn’t been able to see all of this lurking beneath snarky, permanently half bored Damon all along, but it was a papercut to his pride all the same. Apologies weren’t going to do anything more than earn him another ten minutes spent on his knees with his brains about to leak out of his ears all over Wickery Bridge. This was a matter of having to let time pass and those pigeon steps he was making back away from the person he’d been while he’d been pining over the devil incarnate be noticed by the people who’d deserved more than what he’d given them in her name.
Damon’s grin took on a wincing edge as his pride gave way for a moment. His heart might’ve belonged to Katherine for the better part of a century and a half but it hadn’t stopped him from finding his fun in the meantime, or using women for whatever he needed them for. It was what he’d done with Caroline, playing on her crush on him knowing exactly what he was doing to her all along. ”As a bad boy Casanova sort,” he agreed. ”Unless you’re in to that sort of thing…” That hadn’t been the Damon who’d wanted to get his feelings for this woman off of his chest on his death bed though. That Damon had been a thousand times more vulnerable than the bad boy. Maybe a part of that jerk had died, burned out of him by the poison that had come within hours of taking his life. ”No joke,” he promised, even though his words had been just that. ”I’m always glad to lend my services to the right person.” And without him planning for it to happen Claire had become that person. She hadn’t let him give up or talk his way around what was happening. Nodding sagely, Damon letting out a low sound. ”Oh you did and it worked. That was one hell of an incentive. I couldn’t pop my clogs not knowing where this might’ve gone. You might’ve guessed, I’ve never liked answered questions.” And this had been one that would’ve followed him to the grave. Claire had already been through so much with her husband and kids, something he’d only found out about after she’d turned up back here and those feelings had started to stir again. Peeling his hand off of the wheel he reached for hers, squeezing it even as she found a smile. ”I know that you not doing that is worth the work you’re making me put in,” Damon promised. Black brows beetling, he shot a sideways look at her, his lips beginning to curve devilishly. ”You’re already raising the bar to dizzying heights in my head,” he admitted. If he was being honest there really wasn’t all that much to compare this to. What he’d had with Katherine was hardly the standard sort of courtship Claire had with her husband. That relationship had tainted everything he’d toyed with since. Until now, that was.

After everything they had been through together there were times when Claire got the feeling that she knew Damon better than he knew himself but she couldn’t deny that this time he had surprised her. Their relationship had always been somewhat of a complicated one even when she was human, she had come to consider Damon and Stefan her family just as much as her sister Violet had been but that hadn’t meant that she hadn’t still clashed with Damon from time to time. In some ways the two of them were quite similar, they had both grown up as the oldest sibling and that protective instinct was one that never truly faded no matter what was going on between them. She had never been afraid to call Damon out on it when he was hiding something and she wouldn’t be surprised if that had annoyed him from time to time but even so something more had always been there between them just below the surface. For a long time she hadn’t felt ready to admit it and it was only when Damon was literally on his death bed that she had finally let herself admit that she felt more than friendship or a family connection to him and she hadn’t thought that it was something that she would end up getting the chance to explore. Neither of them had spoken about it since so she had felt sure that Damon had wanted to forget everything that he had said to her that day but as it turned out she couldn’t have been more wrong and for once she was happy to admit that. She had no idea what was going to happen but Damon had already managed to get off to a good start with the dress and if she was honest she was looking forward to seeing what he had planned. She had fallen in love after parting ways with Damon and Stefan and she was sure that a part of her would always love her husband, after all she had been planning on spending the rest of her life with him, but at the end of the day he would have died decades ago and she knew that it was time she finally moved on with her life. She had never truly thought that that might end up being with Damon but he was the first person that she had let get close to her in that way since she left her family behind and in a way it felt fitting that one of the two people who still remembered her as a human was the person capable of making her feel something again. “You know that’s not me. I like this Damon,” Claire admitted. He had already gone above and beyond for her with the dress and she got the impression that he might have gone out of his way to plan something special for the two of them as well. That wasn’t the Damon that she had heard about when she had found her way back to Mystic Falls nor was it the Damon that a few of her colleagues had warned her to stay away from. This was the Damon that she remembered, the one who was capable of doing a good thing for the right reasons and she couldn’t deny that she was looking forward to seeing more of that. “Then I’ll definitely have to take you up on that,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at him. She didn’t know why she seemed to be one of the only ones who got to see this side of Damon but she couldn’t deny that it was something she liked and she knew that she definitely wouldn’t turn down his help when it came to making her step out of her comfort zone a little. “That’s what I was counting on,” she laughed. “I needed something to stop you from giving up on me and when I found out you felt the same way I did it only seemed right that we both had something to fight for.” Damon had been so close to giving up and she had meant it when she had told him that she couldn’t imagine living in a world without him in it. He drove her crazy at times but he was important to her and she had known that she would do whatever she had to in order to get him to hold on even if that had meant holding this over him until he decided to fight for it. As Damon reached over and squeezed her hand Claire couldn’t help but smile over at him. “If I’m honest I’m out of practice with all of this but I’m glad you think so,” she admitted. The last person she had dated was her husband and even though there could have been guys since then she hadn’t wanted to let anyone get close to her like that only to end up losing them the same way she had her husband and kids. With Damon things were different, she had come so close to losing him after he was bitten by Klaus and she knew that she didn’t want to lose the chance to see where things might go between them. “So I know you won’t tell me exactly where we’re going but will you at least tell me if we’re close?” she asked, eager to see what he had in mind for them that evening but still a little nervous at the same time. What did a hundred and fifty year old vampire do with himself when the thing he spent those hundred and fifty years fighting for was suddenly gone? When she’d been gone the whole time and he’d been too blind to see it? He floundered. Emotionally he struck out against others, letting all that they swore he’d switch off bubble away beneath the surface. The man who’d been pretty damn pissed about an eternal life without Katherine already had taken all of that hurt and had channeled it in a way none of them had enjoyed. Her return to rub the whole thing in his face hadn’t broken him to the point where his heart had taken over but it hadn’t driven him to tearing this town apart either. The Damon left after all that betrayal had taken his hurt feelings and run. Damon knew categorically that he’d been a coward but it had been a healthy cowardice for all around him. If he’d stayed he would’ve drunk himself into a hole beside Ric or taken all of that hurt and made sure that everybody else felt it twice over. He’d been better off licking his wounds in private, waiting until they’d stopped feeling like they were tearing apart something inside of him before he’d come crawling back here to make sure Stefan didn’t suffer in the same way. Once he would’ve claimed it was because the only person allowed to make his brother suffer for him but the world had changed and Damon had known he’d needed to change or spend the next 150 years trapped in that same vicious circle. Glancing across at Claire, he knew with one hundred percent certainty, that this was his version of moving on. Katherine could skulk around the town trying to find a way out of her own vicious cycle all she wanted, but he was free of his. He was moving on.
That bad boy Casanova sort he had been had done a hell of a lot of harm in this town, something he’d called justifiable at the time. The Damon he was now was the sort Caroline might’ve seen as her Disney prince instead. He’d felt pretty damn prince like when he’d gone to pick out the dress and he was sure as hell puffing his chest out at Claire’s admission now. ”Not you at all,” he agree, shaking his head slightly as the corners of his lips tipped up. This Damon was going to take some getting used to but from the look on her face, it was worth doing. Judging from how Claire had looked when she’d stepped from the station, he’d finally started doing things right. Smiling crookedly about it now, Damon took a half bow. He’d definitely done good here and if he played his cards right the rest of the night would be too. That crooked smile melted away slightly as he admitted just what Claire’s refusal to discuss his feelings for her had done to his determination to stay alive. ”That was a pretty big something,” he drawled. ”I honestly thought you might’ve thrown a dying guy a bone but you were dangling that thing like a carrot right in front of my nose instead.” And he’d kept on putting on foot in front of another for it. Anything to get to where they were now. Somehow Claire had pulled him through it all and he’d be damned if he wasn’t grateful for that and for Stefan’s sacrifice to get him the cure. Reaching out Damon settled his hand over hers, squeezing gently. His own smile drifted to a snort of amusement that shocked even him. ”That makes two of us. I honestly wasn’t doing much dating while I was making Machiavelli look like a sweetheart.” Katherine had been the only thing that had mattered then. Now he and Claire were fumbling in the dark, both trying to find a way to move on through this maze of what they were. Humming low in his throat as he drove, Damon bobbed his head slowly. ”I’ll tell you when we are. It’s not that far, cross my heart and hope to die. You don’t have to be at the station for a shift early tomorrow, do you?” He’d already asked Ares but then he’d felt like he could trust her partner about as far as he could throw the guy.

Claire had been lucky enough to have experienced love before and when she got married she had honestly thought that she had found the guy that she was going to spend the rest of her life with. Deep down there had always been some feelings towards Damon beneath the surface but back then he was a vampire and she was human so they were completely different people. She hadn’t wanted to become a vampire, instead she had wanted the chance to live out a normal life, have children of her own and grow old with someone she loved by her side. That wasn’t the kind of future that Damon would have been able to have and before he was bitten by Klaus she hadn’t even felt like she was ready to admit that there was something more than friendship going on between the two of them. She had known that she’d cared about him but that was as far as she had been willing to go with it and it had taken almost losing Damon for her to realise that life was short and that she didn’t want to waste any more time. She had already lost everyone that she had ever loved aside from Damon and Stefan, Violet was gone and so were her husband and her children. For a long time she realised she had been punishing herself for that by keeping her distance from anyone that could possibly get close enough to her to make her care about them but there were a few people who had managed to get under her skin. One of them was Ares so learning that he was in Mystic Falls too really had worked out perfectly and given that she had now been reunited with the Salvatore brothers too she knew that there wasn’t anywhere in the world that she would rather be. She had never thought that she and Damon would actually end up going out on a date but he had already gone to a lot of effort and she knew that she wasn’t going to let that go to waste. He had roped Ares into his plan so she didn’t doubt that her partner would end up grilling her about what had happened the next time they were on duty together but for now she knew that she just wanted to enjoy whatever it was that Damon had arranged for the two of them. Damon knew her better than just about anyone and she liked to think that she knew him just as well. The person that he had been when he first returned to Mystic Falls sounded like the Damon that she had known back in London in a way but the bad boy that he had been back then wasn’t her type at all. This Damon seemed much more like the real Damon that Stefan had told her that his brother had been while they were growing up and that was the Damon that she could see herself having a future with. There weren’t any games or ulterior motives, they were just two people who liked each other trying to figure things out and that was how it should be. “If the cure hadn’t arrived when it had then I probably would have caved,” Claire admitted. “You know what I’ve been through, I didn’t want to admit what I felt for you if you weren’t going to be around so that we could try and make something of this but I also know that I wouldn’t have been able to forgive myself if you had died without knowing how I felt about you,” she explained. She had admitted it in a way when Damon had been suffering from Klaus’ bite but she hadn’t wanted to admit it and open her heart again only to have it break pretty soon afterwards if she could help it so it had been as much a way of keeping Damon going as it had been protecting her own heart. A smile touched Claire’s lips as Damon squeezed her hand and she couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke once again. “Well, it sounds like this will be good for both of us then,” she grinned. She knew that Damon hadn’t been in the kind of headspace to even think about moving on properly until recently and she hadn’t either so she knew that perhaps now the time was finally right for both of them. As he asked if she had an early shift tomorrow, Claire shook her head. “I actually have tomorrow off so you don’t need to worry about that,” she assured him. DAMON SALVATORE

For a guy who hadn’t wanted to survive a single day of his afterlife without Katherine by his side he’d proudly done a hell of a lot of living. Of course, there were great chunks of that living where his sole purpose had been to make Stefan pay for forcing him to make the transition, and he’d done a hell of a job of it. There were other moments though, where the two of them had been the brothers they’d once been again. London had been one of those times, he hadn’t tried to throw Stefan under the bus, hadn’t tortured him, tortured those around him. Instead, for a time he’d been on the receiving end of it all until a friend he’d just toyed with, or at least he’d told himself he’d just toyed with, had been willing to sacrifice her own sister for him. Damon knew it was more than he’d deserved then, given what he’d spent decades doing. Had he seen the third chance as a way to make a real difference in the world, the way that Stefan always seemed to want to? Nope, with a big fat, capital N. He’d taken that chance after they’d parted ways and continued on his original mission, alternating between those moments of messing up what happiness Stefan was finding and trying to get his brother back. Who knew that returning home would have the balance of things between them, between all of them, swinging so far away from what it had been. Giuseppe had probably been rolling in his grave from the moment his boys had united against a common enemy. It wasn’t the only thing old Giuseppe would’ve been doing a jig over. Even now, when his own sons were monstrosities, the thought that they were tangling themselves up with more of their kind, sleeping with the enemy so to speak. Oh, and Stefan’s entanglement with Elena? That would’ve galled the old man. They weren’t just corrupting themselves, they were spreading that corruption through a town that seemed to slowly be ending up taken over by them all.
It had taken Katherine to break him of his need to somehow try and please his father. It wasn’t going to happen and he’d spent too many years tilting at damn windmills, hoping one of them was going to fall over. Nothing but wasted effort and maybe even wasted years, not that he’d had a clue that Claire hadn’t lived a happy little human life and slipped away in her sleep decades ago. Happy coincidence the two of them both ending up back here at the same time or the moving of pieces on this random little chess board of life by something far bigger than them with one hell of a sick sense of humour? It was an answer Damon was pretty sure he didn’t want to hear. Asking the question was only giving whatever it was the option to wipe all of this out and they’d come through too damn much to let that happen. Damon’s grin brightened, his blue eyes twinkling as they cut to her. ”I knew you would’ve done in the end…” But he’d been hoping to hell that the end wasn’t going to have to come. He’d been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice but some greedy little part of him had wanted his little brother to save him. And he hadn’t wanted to put Claire through another loss. Teeth sinking into his lower lip for a moment, Damon shook his head. ”You know I’m never going to let that happen now. You’re stuck with me now.” Klaus had forced their hands in a way he almost had to thank the asshole for. Skimming his thumb over the back of Claire’s knuckles Damon couldn’t help but smirk. ”If anything it’ll at least have jaws dropping all over town and not just because you’re looking incredible.” All those judgy little expressions were gonna have to change. This was the new Damon, the one that so many of them didn’t believe actually existed. ”So,” he crooned softly. ”That means I can take you out drinking and dancing all night if that’s what I’ve got planned and maybe talk you into a sleepover.” In a Boarding House filled with people who’d know that he had company the moment they walked in the door.
