And they constantly wondered why he got so freaking frustrated at every single one of them … this was why, Damon thought as he realised he wasn’t going to wring a single answer out of Matt in these woods. It all should’ve been easy, coming up with some clue about what had happened in the last week, Mystic Falls wasn’t that big after all, but it wasn’t easy, never was in this town. Secrets were kept here for a reason and had been for hundreds of years. No member of the town council wanted to admit that his own sons were sympathising with vampires, let alone romantically involved with them and no big hearted, overly protective soul wanted to reveal to the town’s blue eyed boy just what was going on around them. Of all of them Matt Donovan was likely the most naïve. When he’d taken things too far with Vicki, when he’d been stirring up trouble trying to get Katherine free of the tomb, Matt had been the one they’d all gathered around, making certain he didn’t learn the truth. Maybe if he’d found out a little more of it he might not be out here now finding the guy with a sword and bupkis in the way of answers about where he’d been and how the hell he’d learned to wield the thing with enough skill to take something that had taken him down within seconds. Undoubtedly if Stefan had been here his brother would’ve managed to finesse the answers out of Matt. Only they didn’t have Stefan out here, just the near legendary impatience of Damon ‘Black Sheep’ Salvatore.
Damon’s brows hitched as Matt finally snapped him at him, the guy showing some backbone for once here. If this was anything to go by then Matt didn’t need the babying that the rest of them thought he did. Blue eyes narrowed at the answer Matt shot back to his question, flicking up and down the guy, from the sword, to the face twisted with temper. ”Well that’s somewhere to start at least,” he muttered. ”Someone’s done something to you and I promise you we’ll get to the bottom of it.” Even if he had to overstep the mark the others would undoubtedly lay down to do it. Shaking his head, Damon huffed out a breath. ”It’s positively unnatural. I’m good, I can handle things but it tossed me away like a ragdoll while you…” He gestured, faintly frustrated at the idea of Matt doing what he hadn’t been able to. A hundred and fifty year old vampire bested by a kid with a sword he’d not handled until today. It might’ve been embarrassing if there weren’t other things developing here, the sort of things they’d been trying to avoid since he’d inadvertently turned Vicki. Hands shot high, avoiding doing what he thought of first and tear Matt to pieces to go for surrender instead. Damon swallowed the words that flew to his tongue too, feeling the prick of the sword against his adam’s apple as he watched Matt’s eyes begin to glow in a way that was unnerving and intriguing all at the same time. ”I turned her into a vampire,” Damon finally admitted, his voice tight as he glared into Donovan’s eyes. ”Is that what you wanted to hear Donovan? That I screwed up and played the Big Bad Wolf to your helpless little sister? I did but I didn’t do it looking to hurt her. In the end she was the one doing the hurting.” Vicki’s control had slipped, the same way her maker’s had dozens of times. The difference was that Vicki had picked the wrong person, the wrong time to slip up and they’d had no choice in how things had gone downhill.

Had it not been for Damon then Matt would have carried on believing that the fact he seemed to have lost a week somehow was a mistake. It didn’t make any sense, he always kept his head down and stayed out of trouble as much as possible and most of the time he was only just able to scrape by both at school and when it came to money. He pulled extra shifts at the Grill when he could in an attempt to try and make ends meet and most of the time he made an excuse to get out of going to some of the parties that his friends tried to drag him to. So far he had managed to stay out of most of the things that his friends had found themselves thrown into and while it was true that he had seen and heard things that had made him start to question just what was going on in Mystic Falls, suddenly finding out that he was able to wield a sword like it was an extension of his own arm was enough to make him realise that there was more going on than he had perhaps wanted to see. Damon seemed to be just as confused about the whole thing as he did but Matt also couldn’t get the image of the creature that had attacked them out of his head. Vicki had tried telling him that vampires were real but he hadn’t believed her, he had thought that she was seeing things and hadn’t given it so much as a second thought, but now he knew that she had to have been right after all. Damon and Stefan were vampires, the creature that had attacked them was something else entirely and something had apparently happened to Matt in the week he was gone so whether he wanted to be thrown into that world or not that was exactly what had happened. “How do I know I can trust you?” Matt challenged. Damon had never given him any reason to think that he was out for anything other than his own gain, even now Matt knew that there had to be some reason why the guy had gone looking for him in the first place so he knew better than to believe that he just wanted to help put the pieces together for someone that he couldn’t care less about. In a short space of time he had learned that vampires and other creatures that went bump in the night were real and he had also learned that at least some of the people he had always believed he could trust had been lying to him all year. Needless to say he wasn’t really sure who to believe any more but something told him that he would be much better off without Damon’s kind of help. Pulling the sword on him wasn’t something that Matt had necessarily planned on but the vampire had managed to make his blood boil and in that moment his new instincts had taken over. Damon was hiding something from him and no matter what happened he was determined to get to the bottom of it. “Vicki never did anything to anyone. Why would you do that to her?” he demanded, the tip of the sword still positioned against Damon’s adam’s apple as he waited for an answer. Damon’s last words had managed to get to him though and his grip on the sword loosened slightly. “Who did she hurt?” he asked even though something in the back of his mind told him that he already knew the answer to that question. Even as he looked over at Damon the barrier in his mind from the compulsion seemed to break and he took a shaky step backwards as the memories came flooding back to him. “It was Elena, wasn’t it? Vick was going to hurt her,” he breathed as he let the sword fall to his side, pretty sure that he knew what the answer was going to be even as the question left his lips. DAMON SALVATORE

It didn’t matter how much good he tried to do in this town, it was always going to come around to all the times that he’d screwed up. The world of a century and a half ago might’ve seemed a million miles away to most but, yeah, not a lot had changed in Mystic Falls. People still looked at Damon Salvatore with distrust in their eyes, only this time he’d actively gone out of his way to foster those looks amongst Stefan’s band of merry men and women. Coming back to town originally was just to free Katherine from the tomb but it had the added benefit of driving Stefan crazy, of making certain that he wouldn’t be able to settle back in Mystic Falls and play happy families here with Zach. Golden boy Stefan could screw up as often as he liked, could tear the head off of hundreds of people in the last century and yet … they welcomed him here, trusted him in a way that he was certain he’d never be. There was a reason for that, the small voice in the back of Damon’s mind whispered as Matt questioned how far he could trust him again and again. Every time they’d started to crack just a little, he went and bit the hand that fed him, almost literally sometimes. The Damon who’d manipulated them all into helping him to open the tomb, he would’ve lied his ass off here, leaving Matt out in the woods to die of exposure, kicking his heels up at the Grill while everybody else rushed around trying to find him. That Damon had slowly begun to fade as hurt had replaced the most twisted part of him and now, hell, now he felt like he needed to explain, even if it came back to bite him on the ass later.
How many ways was he going to have to say this to get Matt to trust him? Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Damon scowled, black brows beetling together as he gestured around him. ”Because I’ve never given you a reason to before and now there’s a pretty big reason staring you in the face?” he asked, his voice sweet in contrast to the expression on his face. ”Use those few brain cells that’ve survived your little football career and think Gumby. Would I have come all the way out here just to screw with you?” There were a thousand places closer to town that he could’ve played torturer. Damon was fairly sure that single truth wouldn’t override the fact that time and time again he had screwed with them all for his own ends. Matt might’ve been compelled to forget most of that but at sword point he could hardly start trying to cover up all that he’d done to Vicki Donovan again. It was too late, the closet door was flung wide open. ”Probably doesn’t help to say I didn’t have a clue who she was when I first bit her,” he managed, hands hitching an inch higher as he shrugged. ”By the time I found out she was your sister it was already too late. I’d done something stupid. I’m rash, you know that, impatient, an all-round asshole.” That wasn’t going to be news to anybody in town now, unlike the fact that he was always an asshole. Not wanting Matt to be oblivious to his sister’s eventual thoughts, Damon sighed and nodded as Matt answered his own question. ”Vicki was with Jeremy, she accidentally bit him and almost lost it before Elena stepped in. Then it was too late, she tried to kill Elena and Stefan had to step in. She couldn’t control herself. She bit Elena and then it was either Elena died or Vicki did.” From what Stefan had told him there was no choice in the matter. For the Salvatores the Petrova doppelgangers were always going to be first choice. Damon’s breath rushed out of his lungs as the sword was lowered, his hands finally dropping to his sides.

After all of the let down that he had experienced during the course of his life so far it had never been particularly easy for Matt to trust people. His dad had taken off before he was born never to be seen or heard from again so he had never even met the man and between his mom and Vicki he hadn’t exactly had very good role models to look up to while he was growing up. In them he had seen pretty much everything that he never wanted to become and even though he was the younger sibling from a fairly young age he had stepped up to try and help take care of his sister. Now she was gone and his mom had left town after he found out about her and Tyler so he was completely alone in the world. So many people had let him down over the years and now that he had learned that at least some of his friends had been lying to him for quite some time he wasn’t even sure which of them he could trust. In a way he understood why they had done it, learning that vampires and other creatures were real would have changed his life completely but it had happened anyway so Matt knew that they had just been delaying the inevitable. Had he known about the supernatural world beforehand then there was a chance that he might have been a little more prepared but as it stood he hadn’t known a thing about it because that was what had been decided for him and as a result he had ended up killing for the first time. He still didn’t know what it was that he had killed but it had been in self defence so he knew deep down that he shouldn’t feel too bad about it. Still, it wasn’t something that he took lightly and he knew that the weight of it was something that he would likely carry with him for a long time. Damon was one of those people that Matt was pretty sure that he would never be able to trust but for now he knew that he was going to have to if he was going to stand a chance at getting back to town in one piece. Damon was a vampire, that much was true, but there were other monsters out there in the woods as he had already seen and even though he had killed the first one he still had no idea how he had suddenly become a master at swordsmanship so he knew that he had to tread carefully. “I wouldn’t be surprised but I’ll believe you for now,” he said at last, his gaze still fixed firmly in front of him rather than looking at Damon. Threatening the vampire wasn’t something that he had planned on doing but Damon had a habit of dancing around the truth and Matt just wasn’t in the mood to play games. Damon clearly knew what had happened to Vicki and for far too long Matt had been left with so many questions about why his sister had been taken from the world so soon but now it seemed that he was finally going to get some answers. “You’re right, it doesn’t,” he agreed. He knew that he should probably lower the sword but Damon needed an incentive to continue being honest with him so he knew that he couldn’t let his guard down just yet. “She tried to kill Elena?” he asked, trying to get his head around exactly what had happened as he finally lowered the sword. “The Vick I knew never would have hurt anyone,” he muttered. Perhaps she hadn’t been the Vicki he had known that night though, Damon had turned her into a vampire so perhaps his sister had been gone before she had died. DAMON SALVATORE

Any brownie points he might’ve earned for getting Matt back were going up in smoke. Damon tipped his head back faintly, blue eyes following the line they’d have taken up into the slowly darkening sky. They’d all been for keeping Matty Boy in the dark, protecting the poor little naïve human for as long as possible. Every sniff he’d caught of it could’ve been erased but they hadn’t wanted to risk even that much. Matt wasn’t to know that his sister had been turned, that she’d then taken the opportunity to attempt to kill Elena. He wasn’t to know just who he could point the finger at, although Matt had already aimed plenty of venom in his direction for everything that had gone on with Caroline, for every other slightly … OK … mostly malicious thing he’d done in this town. That venom had come his way even without full knowledge of the truth. Now, well, he could only half blame Donovan for preparing to swing that blade and take his head off the same way he’d done that creature. It would save everyone else a lot of effort, hell, there were probably some out there who’d just applaud him for a job well done. Damon Salvatore, finally put to rest in the town he could wait to escape. Soon as the ritual was stopped and the Mikaelsons chased out of here for good he was going to do just that and then Donovan here could go swinging that blade to his heart’s content, without him here to try and work out why the hell he could do it now when he couldn’t lift anything heavier than a dumbbell two weeks ago.
He’d brought it on himself though, choosing to fill in Matt and see if he could trigger anything of that last week in their blue eyed boy’s head. Nothing had sprung free yet but at least Donovan was begrudgingly trusting him now. Once they were out of here he’d realised that Damon Salvatore wouldn’t have muddied his boots just to screw with a guy who honestly meant nothing to him right now. Screwing with Donovan wouldn’t get him anywhere, but saving his ass, now that would maybe change things a little. Damon smiled acerbically, the corners of his eyes crinkling. ”In the absence of a better explanation,” he added, filling in what had to be written between the lines here. Matt wasn’t going to believe he didn’t have an ulterior motive until he had the truth staring him in the face. That truth had been hidden for far too long when it came to what had happened to Vicki. Damon shrugged as Matt agreed that his ignorance was no comfort. It could’ve been anybody out in those woods and the result would’ve been the same, some wide eyed brother would’ve mourned his sister. Yada yada yada. Only any other girl wouldn’t have had such a hate on for Elena Gilbert. That was the crux of the matter, Vicki had gone after Elena. Damon kept his hands up, tiring of it already but not wanting to risk a swipe of that sword. ”Didn’t I just say so? Halloween night, the two of them got a little antsy and Vicki couldn’t control herself. The first few days as a vampire it’s not a matter of the person you were not hurting anybody. You’re hungry all the time. You don’t get someone to teach you, you just give in to it.” Even after you had yourself some control it wasn’t a matter of the person you were before sticking around to guide your actions. Being turned changed you, the act itself leaving you bitter, or angry or just plain righteous at sticking your fingers at the world you’d hated before.

Matt had always been the kind of person to take things at face value. When the animal attacks had started happening around town he had never given too much thought to whether or not that was what they actually were but he knew now that that had been his mistake. Vicki had tried telling him that vampires were real but he hadn’t believed her, instead he had thought that she was just hallucinating because of something that they had given her at the hospital. Had he listened to her that day then he knew that perhaps he could have done something to save her but deep down he knew that thinking like that wouldn’t do any good. Even though he was the younger of the two he had always been the one looking out for her so if there was anything that he could do to bring her back then he knew that he would do it but somehow he doubted that it was possible even with what he knew about the world that he lived in. He knew that there were some things that just shouldn’t be messed with and the balance of life and death was one of those. He had already tipped the scales in one direction by killing the creature that had attacked him and he knew better than to tempt fate. He still didn’t know what the creature was that had tried to kill him but it didn’t matter; the guilt of knowing what he had done was something that he would carry with him. Damon’s revelation that vampires were real was enough to make him wonder if there were other creatures out there too so he knew that there was every chance that the thing he had killed had been human once but he knew that he couldn’t let himself think like that or the guilt would just eat away at him. For now at least he had something else to focus on so for now he just wanted to make sure that he got back to town in one piece. After that he and Damon could go their separate ways and he honestly hoped that it would be the last that he would see of the eldest Salvatore for a while. He still had so many questions but he could only be around Damon for so long and he had almost taken the guy’s head off once so he knew better than to let Damon provoke him again in case next time he didn’t have as much self restraint. As Damon explained what had happened to Vicki, Matt studied him carefully for a moment. “There must have been some way you could have helped her,” he said, knowing that if what Damon was saying was true then it would be difficult for any new vampire to learn to adjust. “You and Stefan seem to have it under pretty good control,” he added even though he knew in his heart that he was clutching at straws. Had it just been Damon involved then he knew that there probably would have been another way but he knew Stefan and he trusted him so even though he didn’t want to believe it he knew that perhaps it was the only way to make sure that Vicki didn’t kill Elena. “If vampires are real then what else is out there?” he asked, certain that there had to be more than just one species out there judging by what he had seen that day. Matt knew that something had happened to him during the week that he had lost and a part of him was curious as to whether Damon had any inclination whatsoever but he was too afraid of the answer to ask that question outright. Giuseppe would’ve pointed his finger at his eldest son and said that everything he’d done in this town, every life he’d taken was proof of the rot inside of him. It had been there since he was a child, stealing from his own father, evident in his cowardice at leaving the rest of the men to die on the battle field without him. Corrupt and worthless from the very start. It hadn’t been the truth and wasn’t the truth now. Screwing with the people of this town had been a side effect of his never-ending torment of his brother who’d forced him to turn when he quite happily could’ve gone to his grave believing that Katherine was dead. He could’ve really lashed out when he’d found out that Katherine had been playing him all along but he hadn’t had he? The people in this town were still alive, the streets not running with the river of blood that he’d put there. There was even an ounce of guilt inside about what he’d done to Vicki by being careless not only once but twice. He’d been the one to turn her and at the end of the day, he hadn’t been able to teach her the way Stefan might’ve done really given the chance. That didn’t mean that he had any intention of taking Matt here under his wing the way his saint brother might’ve done. Nope, this was enough, Damon decided, being out in the woods, tracking Donovan down and finally opening his eyes, albeit under protest. This was him atoning for whatever sins he might’ve committed when it came to Vicki. It was going to have to be a clean slate between the two of them from here on out.
Given his own behaviour was it any wonder the way Vicki had been behaving that night? Control wasn’t exactly his strong point and as a newly turned vampire, Vicki had even less of that than her sire. Every emotion heightened, every nerve in her body screaming at her to feed, to draw blood. Maybe there’d been a faint chance that they’d have been able to get her onto some Vampire Veggie diet of Stefan’s design with enough time but in that moment there hadn’t been any choice. ”There wasn’t,” he promised. ”We tried teaching her, tried showing Vicki the right way but in that moment she was out of control and the only choice we had was her and Elena. One of them was going to end up dead.” And they had chosen Elena. Damon knew that was still going to sting but Vicki, technically was already dead, had been living on borrowed time the same way he and Stefan had been for the last century. Damon snorted, rocking on his heels faintly as Matt tried to justify them saving Vicki’s ass by using he and Stefan as examples. ”I’ve got it under pretty good control,” Damon countered almost smugly. ”You really don’t want to see Stefan when he’s not been out there snacking on Thumper and Bambi.” Ripper Stefan wouldn’t have been able to resist tearing the thing Matt had killed apart. He wouldn’t even have been able to stop himself from killing Elena in full ripper mode. It was a good thing for all of them that he was working his vampire 12 steps now. Not everything was prepared to work a program to keep itself under control, the dead thing on the ground proof of that. Shrugging, Damon tipped his head towards it now. ”That for one thing and no, I have no clue what screwed up fairy tale it crawled out of. What else do you think is out there Matt? What horrors are you looking to open your eyes to?” Hell in their circle alone they had witches and werewolves at the very least. Would Matt look at the Lockwoods and Bennetts the same way knowing the truth or would they get a taste of the blade too?

For a long time Matt hadn’t wanted to accept that there was more out there than he had thought but now he had no choice but to do just that. He had dismissed Vicki’s assurances that vampires existed as nothing more than hallucinations brought on by blood loss or some drug that she had taken but now he knew that he should have listened to her all along. Perhaps if he had then she would still be alive now, perhaps she wouldn’t have ended up falling in with Damon Salvatore in the first place, but he knew that thinking like that wasn’t going to bring his sister back. No matter how much he might want to he doubted that there was anything strong enough to do that so he knew that he needed to find a way to accept what had happened to her. That was going to be a lot easier said than done but he hoped that in time he would find a way to move on from it the same way that he had every other tragedy that had littered his life so far. His family had made sure that he was used to being on his own, used to just being able to depend on himself, and while it meant that he was often lonely and exhausted from trying to work all the hours that he could just so that he could keep food on the table and a roof over his head it had also made the bonds of friendship that he shared with Elena and the others that much stronger. They were his family by choice and they had done more for him than his own family ever had so he knew that he should be reaching out to them now to help him figure out just what had happened to him when he disappeared but after almost taking off Damon’s head he couldn’t shake the feeling that he just couldn’t put them at risk like that yet, not until he had a much better handle on his self-control. “So you chose to save Elena,” Matt nodded. In a way he understood, Stefan loved Elena and he knew that Damon cared about her in his own way too. Hell, Matt had loved Elena for as long as he could remember so he knew that if it came down to choosing between saving her and someone else then he would have done the same thing but it still didn’t make knowing what had happened to his sister hurt any less. “Why not?” he asked, not quite sure what Damon was getting at when he said that he didn’t want to see Stefan when he wasn’t feeding on animals. Matt had watched movies with vampires in and they all seemed to drink from humans with the only exceptions being the vegetarians in the Twilight films that the girls had made him watch with them so it seemed strange to him that Stefan chose to live differently to his brother but it sounded like there was a reason for it. As Damon spoke again, taunting him once more, Matt felt his anger begin to rise again. “I don’t want to open my eyes to anything but something in me has changed and I need to know what,” he said, doing his best to keep his anger in check. He wasn’t sure he actually wanted to know what had happened to him but wanting and needing to know something were two very different things. “You know what, forget it. I don’t know why I expected a straight answer out of you for once,” he said as he turned away from Damon. “You can tell Elena and the others you’ve done your good deed for the decade by finding me but I can’t stand around here any longer. I need to get home while I hopefully still have a home to go to,” he said before setting off in that direction. He paid rent on a monthly basis and if he really had been missing for a week then it meant that he had missed the last payment so he knew that he couldn’t give his sleazy landlord any reason to kick him out. Damon Salvatore being selfish wasn’t exactly unexpected. In fact, most people in this town who supposedly knew the real him would’ve said that he was incapable of being any other way. Had he been selfish when he’d managed to turn Vicki Donovan? Perhaps. It had certainly been self-indulgent, a way to tick off Stefan and force people’s hands, maybe it had been a little born by boredom too, but at the end of the day, it honestly hadn’t been intentional. Not that the hot-headed teenager in front of him was going to believe that. After a year of being lied to Matt was going to see deception absolutely everywhere until some part of him wised up to the fact that the people who were closest to him had only done it because they cared about him. It was going to take Elena, Caroline, Bonnie and even Stefan to get him to see straight, anybody but the guy who’d actually killed his sister … twice. Damon mentally kicked himself for bringing all of this up now. The easiest way to deal with Matt would’ve been just getting him back to the Camaro, back to town where someone else could take over trying to convince him of what the hell was going on. Only things were honestly never easy. Something big and bad had arrived and in taking it on Matt had inadvertently revealed this whole hidden world to himself. Now he was going to have to walk on eggshells in a way and Damon knew he was about as good at that as he was at keeping his temper or remaining patient and tolerant for more than five minutes at a time.
Frustration was eating at him now but it was right along with that faint trace of guilt he felt over what he’d done. Huffing out a deep breath, Damon raised a hand, dragged it over his lower face as he eyed Matt over the top of it. ”Elena and whoever else Vicki might’ve hurt. It wasn’t just a matter of us picking Elena over Vicki because Stefan loved her. She was dangerous.” And that might’ve all been on him. He wasn’t exactly a glowing example of how a vampire could go undetected. It was like he’d rubbed off on Vicki in some way and no matter what he’d tried in the end, there hadn’t been any stopping her without killing her that night. Maybe there’d been a bit of the ripper about Vicki, there’d certainly been a blood lust in her that hadn’t been satisfied by Thumper or Bambi. Damon sank the tip of a canine into his tongue. Was he going to have to throw Stefan under the bus to stop Donovan asking questions? He huffed out a breath, shifting on his feet again. ”Stefan doesn’t have great self-control when it comes to feeding on non-furry things. It goes to his head.” And lost other people theirs, adding to his brother’s already mountainous levels of guilt when he came back around from his blood bender. Taunting Matt while he was going through all of this probably wasn’t the best idea but with Donovan pushing at him about what else might’ve been out there, it was something he hadn’t been able to avoid. ”Then we’ll figure it out,” Damon growled out, getting faintly frustrated at the guy. They just needed to get the hell out of here and to someone a little less fractious to work it all out. Before he could convince Matt to get moving the guy was turning away from him, brushing all of this off because he hadn’t had everything spelt out in detail the way he wanted it. ”Come on Donovan, don’t be stupid,” Damon huffed after him. He sped past the guy, stopping in front of him to bring Matt to a halt. ”Don’t go walking off now. The car’s back there, at least let me drive you back to town. What do you think the others are gonna say if I let you go and you disappeared out here again?” With that sword Matt might just be able to handle anything that came his way but who was to say that whoever had taken him before couldn’t handle a little ninja sword-swinging.

Matt had no idea what had happened during the week that he had been missing if what Damon was saying was true but he was determined to get to the bottom of it. Something inside of him had changed, he could feel it, and he knew that whatever it was he needed to get it under control. Damon had killed his sister, that much was true, and Matt wanted nothing more than to kill him for it but that wasn’t who he was. He wasn’t a killer, he was just a kid trying to keep a roof over his head and get through the rest of his time at high school in one piece. What would come after that he had no idea but he was doing the best he could with the hand that he had been dealt and he knew that he really couldn’t do any more than that. He would be lying if he said that it didn’t hurt to know that his friends, the people he had trusted and the people who had been family to him more so than the people whose blood he shared, had been lying to him for so long but he knew that there had to have been a reason. The rational part of him knew that that was perhaps to protect him from what was really going on in Mystic Falls and he couldn’t deny that he wished that he could go back to the blissful ignorance that had been his life just a week ago but he couldn’t forget what he had seen or what Damon had told him so he knew that he was just going to have to find a way to deal with it the same way that he did everything else that was thrown his way. Mystic Falls was a dangerous place, that had been obvious ever since the first so called animal attack took place and he knew that he was much better off knowing what was really going on than he ever had been living his life in the dark about it all even if there were certain things that he wished he hadn’t found out. Had he listened to Vicki when she had said that she had been attacked by a vampire then perhaps she would still be alive now but he knew that the what ifs would drive him crazy if he let them and he wasn’t going to let that happen so he knew that he was just going to have to find a way to accept what had happened considering there was no way that he could change it now. “Vicki was always a loose cannon but she was also my sister so I refuse to believe that she couldn’t have been taught the right way to do things,” Matt said, doing his best to keep his voice level as he spoke. For too long he had thought that Vicki had just abandoned him the same way that his mom and dad had done but the reality was much worse than that. He knew that his sister had had a habit of getting herself lost sometimes and she hadn’t always made good choices but she was the only family he had thought that he could count on so he refused to let anything change that belief in her now. As Damon said that Stefan’s control wasn’t great when he fed from anything other than animals, Matt’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “What do you mean?” he asked at last. “I thought vampires were supposed to drink from people.” That was the way it had been in most of the films he had seen at least. There were one or two exceptions but for the most part vampires were portrayed as killers who only fed from humans but if Damon could control it then he wasn’t sure why it would be such a problem for Stefan since he at least seemed to be the brother who had it together the most. Rolling his eyes as Damon sped in front of him the teenager came to a stop and flexed his fingers around the hilt of the sword that he was still holding. “You don’t get it, do you?” he asked as he lifted his gaze to look at Damon once more. “I killed that thing back there and I nearly killed you too. You’re a dick and you’re the reason my sister is dead but I don’t want any more blood on my hands and it isn’t safe for you to be around me right now,” he sighed. He knew that it would serve Damon right after everything he had done if he did end up killing him but Matt knew that he wasn’t that person and he refused to become like that. “It’s best if I take it from here on my own.”DAMON SALVATORE

From the moment he’d attacked those teenagers in the woods to force Stefan’s hand on giving back his daylight ring Damon had felt a little like he was always having to make up for something. There was always something to apologise for, something that required his penitence. Damon knew that the majority of the preachy little minds in this town thought it was beyond it, that had been the thought around here for practically as long as the town had been here thanks to good old Giuseppe. He’d always thought his eldest would come to no good and perhaps his proud papa had been right in a way, even he’d admit that he done some pretty damn bad things to this town, but even Damon Salvatore wasn’t beyond redemption. It was impossible to give Matt back his big sister, but he’d gone out there looking for the kid when he’d gone missing hadn’t he? He’d stood up to the thing who’d rushed the pair of them when he could’ve sped himself out of there and left Matt as chum in the water. He could’ve continued to withhold the truth when the compulsion that had been placed on Matt had started to crack ... but he hadn’t. Damon knew he still might crow about how far he’d come later but for now there were plenty of people who would say what he’d started to do to balance those scales wasn’t anywhere near enough. People were dead because of him and while their blood had still been wet, he hadn’t cared, at least not in any way that they’d been able to see. What he was saying to Matt now might’ve been like death from a thousand cuts but in his own way, currently, this was him giving a damn.
Damon rolled the argument that Matt had known his sister as a human, not as a blood thirsty vampire, around in mouth while the kid seemed to fight to keep himself from losing it. He dropped his hand away from his face, shaking his head. ”Maybe in time, yeah, she could’ve learned control, but in that moment, I swear to you, it was a matter or either letting Elena be killed in front of our eyes, or stopping Vicki. We didn’t have the luxury of time. Just like you didn’t with that thing.” Blue eyes cut towards the creature Matt had killed. Sure, it was shitty to poke at what he was pretty sure was going to be some major guilt on Matt’s part later, but he needed an example to show that you didn’t always have weeks or months to retrain somebody’s brain. It had taken Stefan a hundred and fifty years to get the grip he had on his self-control and even then, there were times when it was as easy to get his brother to flip the switch into ripper mode as showing him a paper cut. Damon’s throat worked, his brows beetling for a moment as he considered how much to say. ”Some vampires can handle doing just that, I can handle doing just that, others, like Stefan, are lightweights. You know how some people drink one glass of wine and they’re crazy drunk? Stefan’s like that with human blood, only instead of crazy drunk, my little brother goes crazy rippy.” And each one of those deaths weighed like an anvil on him when he came around from that blood high. Guilt might hit Matt in the same way if he swung that blade now that he was in his face but Damon was willing to bet that Donovan wouldn’t give in to the desire. ”Oh I get it better than you think,” he told the kid honestly, taking a half step forward, bringing a hand up to stop any motion. ”It’s not safe for you to be around anyone right now, that includes anybody who might still be out in these woods. Consider this me protecting you. Just get in the car. I’ll promise to keep my mouth shut, we’ll break all speed limits back into town and you’ll be back with those people you won’t be tempted to kill in ten minutes tops.” Push came to shove he was willing to believe he could knock Donovan the hell out before that sword cut his head off.

Matt still didn’t have any more answers than he had done when he had woken up in the woods a short time ago but he knew that he needed to find them and he wouldn’t stop until he did. One thing that he did know for sure was that something inside of him had changed and that scared him. He had killed the creature that had attacked them and even though he knew that it was completely justified considering that the creature would have killed him if given half a chance it still didn’t make it that much easier for Matt to come to terms with the fact that he had taken a life. He didn’t understand how he was suddenly a natural at wielding a katana and he had come so close to taking his anger out on Damon since he was the one who was responsible for Vicki’s death but Matt knew that it wouldn’t win him any favours with his friends and right now he was pretty sure that he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he did anything to Damon anyway. Damon wasn’t a good guy, he was a killer and he had probably done a lot of awful things during his time in Mystic Falls that Matt didn’t have a clue about but right now the guy was the only person that he had on his side and Matt knew that he needed to remember that. He didn’t want to be around Damon any longer than he had to be and he knew that as soon as he was able to get away then he would. He wanted to be able to talk to his friends about everything that was going on right now but he was still angry with them for keeping him in the dark about the supernatural so he knew that he wasn’t ready to do that just yet. Right now all he wanted was to get home and try and get some sense of normality back in his life and with any luck it would mean that he wouldn’t have to worry about being around Damon too much longer. “You’re still responsible for what happened, you’re the reason my sister is gone,” Matt said, unable to stop his voice from breaking as he spoke. He hadn’t believed Vicki when she had tried to warn him about the fact that there were vampires in town, he had thought that she was just imaging things or that it was something that she had been taking having a bad effect on her, especially since it wouldn’t be the first time, but as it turned out she had been telling the truth. If he had listened to her then perhaps things would have been different, perhaps he could have done something to save her, but at the end of the day he knew that wanting things to be different wasn’t going to make it happen and he knew that he was going to have to find a way to get his head around what had happened and move on. He had already grieved for Vicki before he had known what had really happened to her and he refused to let himself get lost in that grief again. “Stefan is a killer?” he asked, unable to deny that he found it difficult to accept that the Stefan he knew, the one he was friends with, was a killer just like his brother. Matt could understand addiction, he had been seeing it in his mom and sister for as long as he could remember, so he knew that he couldn’t really hold it against Stefan if what Damon was saying was true but he was still finding it hard to believe nonetheless. As Damon spoke again, Matt let out a sigh. “Fine, let’s just get out of here and then I can get far away from you.”DAMON SALVATORE

’You did this’. It had been Giuseppe’s accusation every time something had happened to their family. His fault, time and time again, Stefan the golden boy their father had always hoped for. It hadn’t been true at the start of it all, none of it had been the fault of a kid who’d barely grown out of short pants. Later on, maybe he’d stumbled into a mistake by falling for the first woman who’d shown him a real way out, but responsibility hadn’t come until way later. Had he put his love for Katherine above everything else? Absolutely but Damon knew he wasn’t the only idiot in the history of the world to allow a woman to pull him around by his heart. Everything he’d done when he’d first come back to town had been done with the intention of getting one step closer to Katherine. He could try apologizing for that until he was blue in the face but honestly? When you’d been the one to turn a girl out of sloppy killing and boredom that apology would have to be the biggest freaking apology in the history of the world. Hearing Matt’s voice broke as he pointed the finger at him Damon was pretty damn sure that even if he could make it heartfelt, Matt didn’t want to hear it right now. Whatever had happened to him in those days he’d been gone had blown his mind wipe open, wiping out any of the compulsion they’d used to patch together Matt’s memories. It had blown any concern he had been showing by coming to find the kid right out of the water. Didn’t mean a damn thing now.
Damon rolled his retort around in his mouth. Ducking his head faintly as he couldn’t come up with any way of denying what was honestly the truth, he huffed out a breath. Lifting his hands, Damon spread them. ”You’re right, it’s my responsibility. Things shouldn’t have gone that way.” But when they had, they’d done the only thing that would stop Elena from being killed by Vicki. One nasty way to cover up what hadn’t been intentional at all. It wasn’t intentional again now as he started to dig himself a grave out here, digging Stefan one too. He’d probably painted a target right on his brother’s back now too. Looking away from the creature, Damon licked suddenly dry lips and nodded. ”Was,” he adjusted. ”Some vampires don’t have all that much control once they’re turned. Get one without a scrap of it around human blood and it gets bad real quick. Stefan managed to find a way that works for him. Bambi, Thumper, Rocky and Bullwinkle…” Anything but good old fashion O-negative. The minute Stefan got a taste it was a slippery slide down into Ripper territory. His brother’s Achilles heel was always going to be his inability to feed from the vein … and his own was keeping his tongue in check when all it wanted to do was lash like a blade. Damon had tried to talk Matt around but it took a full on guilt trip to get him to agree to heading back in the Camaro now. ”This way…” he drawled as he tipped his head back in the direction he’d come in. ”…just watch where you’re swinging that thing. Can’t drive you back if my head’s tumbling off through the trees.” Turning, he swept a hand through the air to encourage Matt to go ahead of him and then started to trail afterwards. The others weren’t gonna believe a bit of this.

Matt hadn’t even suspected that there was something different going on in Mystic Falls and he couldn’t help but feel foolish for that now. He hadn’t believed Vicki when she had said that there were vampires in Mystic Falls and everything that he had seen that would have made him realise that the things that went bump in the night were real after all had been compelled away. In a way Matt understood why his friends had done it, they had wanted to protect him from the world that they lived in but more than anything he was hurt and angry. He had spent months believing that his sister had simply skipped town like their mom had so many times before when the truth was that she had been killed to save Elena. If he had known that what Vicki was saying was real then there was a chance that he could have tried talking her out of getting involved with Damon but it was too late for all of that now. Wishing things were different wasn’t going to make them so and none of it was going to bring back his sister. Instead Matt was still alone in the world and right now that had never felt truer. He knew that he could reach out to his friends and that he perhaps should do that but he wasn’t sure that he was ready just yet, not after he had killed the monster that had attacked them. He had reacted on instinct and now he couldn’t help but wonder if he was no better than Damon. Not only that but he had almost cut the vampire’s head off and that was something that Matt was pretty sure that his friends would never forgive him for, nor would he perhaps ever be able to forgive himself for even after everything that Damon had done. He only knew a little of what the vampire had done since arriving in Mystic Falls but it was enough. He still seemed to mean a lot to Elena, though, and he was Stefan’s brother so Matt knew that he couldn’t afford to lose control. “You’re right about that but it’s too late now. Vick is gone and she isn’t coming back,” Matt sighed. Just the thought saddened him to no end but thinking about what could have been wasn’t going to do him any good, nor was it going to change the fact that Vicki was gone so he knew that he needed to try and find a way to move on from it. “At least he’s not hurting people now although it sounds like you don’t approve.” Matt could understand not wanting to hurt anyone as the truth was he was in exactly the same situation now so he knew that he couldn’t really blame Stefan for what had happened in the past, not when it sounded like he was trying to do better now. “Is feeding from animals really a thing? I thought that only happened in Twilight,” he asked, remembering the films that the girls had made him watch years ago. It had seemed farfetched then and it still did to Matt a little now but maybe they had been on to something after all. “Maybe not but it’s still a tempting thought,” Matt admitted, rolling his eyes as Damon indicated that he should go first before they headed in the direction of his car. The words ‘I’m sorry’ had always had a way of sticking tight in his throat. It didn’t help that most of the time over the last hundred and fifty years, he honestly hadn’t been. Damon knew that was why most thought he’d flipped the switch years ago. There just wasn’t an ounce of regret there for some truly horrific things. It made him a monster in their eyes, something corrupted and cut free from the humanity that he might once have had. They hadn’t seen the iron fist Giuseppe had ruled with, the way his dad had managed to knock every damn apology right out of him. Giuseppe had never cared if he was just a kid apologizing for knocking a glass of milk over at the table. He should’ve known not to do it in the first place, he should’ve been more careful. When you were raised to keep those words down inside it was easy to carry on that way. Had he regretted some of the things he’d done in this town? Absolutely but was anybody here, other than Claire, Elena and Stefan ready to forgive him for any of it? Obviously not. They didn’t see the rue on his face and unless he got those words out of his mouth and actually showed it by doing something half decent instead of half devilish, none of them were ever going to believe it. Matt hadn’t taken his head off with the sword at the news that he’d had to kill Vicki after killing her accidentally but it didn’t mean he wouldn’t be tempted to for the next decade.
Letting out a long breath, Damon left his hands hanging in the air in front of Matt. He didn’t get the impression that sword was going to come swinging at his head at any moment any more, it seemed more sadness and resignation in Matt’s manner now, but it still felt like a good. ”She’s not,” he agreed hoarsely. Would it have been easier if Vicki had just been one of the kids he’d slaughtered out in the woods instead of dragging it out? Probably not, his sister was dead and that was all that Matt was going to be fixing on. He’d picked Stefan to focus on instead, and his mention of some vampires who couldn’t cope with feeding right from the vein. ”I sound like I don’t approve?” Damon snorted, raising dark brows in Matt’s direction. ”I followed him around for years trying to clear up some of those messes. If him going Veggie Vamp stops him from losing his mind here in Mystic Falls then I’m all for it but generally? We weren’t made to do that. It doesn’t leave you the same.” You were weaker, less able to fight back against whatever was coming for you. If he’d been on the Vampire Light diet when Klaus had bitten him there was no doubt he would’ve been toast before Stefan had gotten there with the cure. Damon shook his head before he sneered. ”Those films are ridiculous but yeah, they got that right. Blood’s blood.” It didn’t matter where it came from … much. If you were desperate anything would do in a pinch. As they started back towards the car Damon scowled at Matt and took an extra step away from the sword. ”Keep hold of those temptations OK? I don’t want either one of us having to go back and explain the other one got …” Damon made a thwict noise as he drew his finger across his throat. He made it to car in one piece at least, gesturing for Matt to get in before he went around to the driver’s side and got in. He’d feel way better when they were back in town and Matt was back in the bosom of his friends, people he wasn’t tempted to behead.
