A week ago life had been normal for Matt. The school year was coming to an end and he was looking forward to being able to spend time with Caroline and with his friends that summer when he wasn’t picking up shifts at the Grill but even as he began to come to he could tell that something felt different. Lately he had been seeing some strange things around Mystic Falls, dark figures that he just seemed to catch out of the corner of his eye and things that he knew couldn’t be human. Mystic Falls had been known for its animal attacks for quite some time but that was something that Matt and the other residents of Mystic Falls had grown used to. While it was true that he had never seen one of the animals responsible himself he knew that there had to be something out there that was responsible for those deaths although it really wasn’t something that he liked to think too much about if he could help it. His own sister Vicki had been lost just a few months ago and with his mother no longer in town as well Matt was completely on his own. He had grown up as the man of the house since his dad had left before he was even born and given how flighty his mother and sister were he had learned what it felt like to be alone in the house from a young age but this time was different. This time Vick wasn’t coming back and he had a feeling that his mother wasn’t either. He had been the one to send her away this time after he had caught her and Ty together and the truth was that even now he hadn’t forgiven her but that didn’t mean that he didn’t still miss her sometimes.
Still, life had gone on as normal and Matt had been doing as best he could to get by. Unable to ignore the pounding in his head Matt opened his eyes slowly and as the world around him began to come into focus he was surprised to learn that he was at Fell’s Church rather than at home but he could only assume that he’d ended up having a drinking session with Tyler and had so much to drink that he couldn’t remember anything. Pushing himself up into a sitting position his eyes widened in surprise as he realised that his arms were littered with cuts and he realised that his whole body was aching. Glancing around him his gaze come to rest on what looked like a Japanese sword resting against the ruins nearby, the only thing out of place other than him it seemed. Without even thinking about it he got to his feet and picked the katana up, knowing that he couldn’t leave it there for just anyone to find. He had already decided to hand it in but as he felt the weight of the katana in his hands he couldn’t shake the feeling that it was somehow meant for him. As he went to check the time on his watch it was instead the date that caught his eye and he had to do a double take. He knew it couldn’t be right as the last day he remembered was a week before and, ignoring the feeling in the back of his mind that there was something wrong, Matt started making his way through the woods, determined to find his way back to town and get some answers as to what was going on.
[Open – if someone could fill Matt in that he has been missing for a week that would be great!]

Patiently waiting around for war to begin had never been his forte. Patience full stop had always been a stretch, something that had no doubt added to their father’s absolute dislike of him. There’d been no chance of him taking over the estate, not when Stefan, the golden boy, was already being groomed. War should’ve been his lot in life, fighting for Virginia, for their way of life but that hadn’t stuck, he’d returned home when he should’ve stayed and more than ever Damon Salvatore had been the black sheep of Giuseppe’s perfect little family. A hundred and fifty years later and Damon knew he hadn’t learned his lesson, only now the people to disappoint were Stefan and Elena. They hadn’t said so in as many words but he suspected his high tailing it out of town after the whole Katherine debacle, after taken things further with Elena than he should’ve done, had caused some major disappointment. What did they expect though? He was who he’d always been, the screw up, the Salvatore brother who didn’t give a damn. That was why he was back, looking to stand alongside his brother to protect Elena from the thing coming to town to threaten her. There’d be some amongst their judgy little group that would say it was merely out of self-interest but it was anything but. Self-interest had driven him into the woods when he’d driven back into town, it had earned him a mouthful of vervain when he’d tried to snack on the cheerleader looking hunter out here too. If he hadn’t given a damn then she would’ve been in a shallow grave out in these woods instead of cooling her heels in town, probably waiting for the next thing to come crawling out from under its rock to try reducing the town’s population.
And he wouldn’t have been strolling through the woods now. Cursing under his breath, Damon picked his way through the trees, moving at a far slower pace than he had done the last time he’d been out here. Then he didn’t have to try too hard to catch a glimpse of the blonde, this time it was more like finding a needle in a haystack. The whole Scooby Gang had been up in arms though. Seven days without Matt Donovan and it looked like most of them were preparing for him to be arriving back in bloody little chunks. Throwing up his own hands in innocence had been instinctive but maybe not entirely believed, like he would have a reason for taking Matt out of the picture. His thing with Caroline had ended months ago, he’d cleaned his act up, not that any of them would believe it. Getting his heart stomped on tended to take a guy’s wind out of his sails … and make him damn sappy at times. Which was why he was out in the woods, beating the bushes to find Matt Freaking Donovan. Blue eyes narrowed at the sound of movement up ahead, ears straining to catch the sound of a heartbeat. Either Matt had finally found his way back along his little breadcrumb trail or there was someone else out here, hunting the kid or something with far bigger teeth and claws. Hurrying his pace, Damon stepped out onto a trail a half dozen steps ahead of Matt. Well this was gonna be a triumph, he thought as he smirked and cocked his head at the kid who was sporting a sword of all things. ”Let me guess, the Three Bears finally let Goldilocks go. Where’ve you been Donovan? A week without you and Caroline’s been inconsolable.” The smirk didn’t last long as he cocked his head to take a look at the sword. Wherever Matt had been it had been somewhere with some serious weaponry, the sort that could do bad, bad things to a vampire’s heart given the right motivation.

Matt had heard about strange things happening in Mystic Falls over the last few years and he had seen a few things himself but the truth was that he had never thought too much of it. He knew that the Founder’s Council would have let them know if there was something to worry about so for Matt his life had gone on as normal. Losing Vicki had hurt, she had been as flaky as their mother at times but she had at least been the one member of his family that he had always been able to count on even if a lot of his childhood had been spent trying to get her out of trouble despite the fact that she was the older sibling. With his mother he at least knew that she was out there somewhere and he would be lying if he said that he didn’t try to avoid thinking about his dad as much as possible but Vicki was gone and he knew that he was never going to see her again. Matt had never really experienced a loss like that before and it had to be said that he honestly hoped he would never experience a loss like that again. If anything it had made him cherish his friendships even more and he had made a promise to himself that he would do whatever he could in order to make sure that he didn’t end up losing someone else that he cared about. He knew that was a natural part of life but he and his friends weren’t even out of high school yet and they had their whole lives ahead of them so he knew that the last thing he wanted was for something to happen to cut that short. Now as he started making his way back towards town he really wasn’t sure what to think. He knew that the date on his watch had to be wrong somehow, there was no way that he could have lost a week, but he couldn’t shake the feeling at the back of his mind that something awful had happened before he woke up at Fell’s Church. He had no idea how his arms had ended up so cut up and he knew that he needed to get them cleaned up as quickly as he could so that he wouldn’t have to worry about them getting infected but he wished he knew what had happened. He needed answers and he had a feeling that he was only going to get those in town so that was exactly where he was heading. He knew that he needed to hand the katana in to Caroline’s mother but after that he was determined to get to the bottom of what had happened. The last thing he had expected was to run into someone out in the woods, least of all Damon Salvatore of all people, and Matt rolled his eyes as Damon spoke. As Damon said mentioned Caroline and said that he had been gone for a week, however, Matt’s eyes widened in surprise. “If this is just another one of your cruel jokes Damon it isn’t funny,” Matt warned, his expression completely serious as he looked over at the man. Guilt hadn’t been much of an issue in the last century and a half. With the switch flipped he hadn’t been bothered by leaving Enzo behind to die in the Augustines’ fiery pit of fun, hadn’t felt so much as a tickle to his conscience when he’d left Lexi up on that roof, having slept with her, or over handing her in to Liz Forbes and her band of merry murderous founders just a few months ago. Hell, ruining Stefan’s life for the last century had been fun at the best of times and a relief at its absolute worst. When Caroline and the others had figured out Matt wasn’t just ditching classes for a day Damon knew he should’ve just headed to the Grill, kicked his heels up and drank the next week ago. He hadn’t though, not for more than the first day. That itch in the back of his mind, that voice that sounded suspiciously like a combination of his preachy brother and Madame Do-Gooder Branson, hadn’t stopped. An extra bottle of bourbon three nights ago and it had still been there. He’d come back to town to help, not to watch it all far apart and then tell the whole lot of them ‘I told you so’. The words had been on his lips when he’d told them all that Matt ‘Most Likely to Die’ Donovan was probably just making sure the apple hadn’t fallen far from Kelly Donovan’s rotten to the core tree. Chances were poor little Matty had just gone looking for his mom.
Or he’d been out in the woods all along. Damon hadn’t really expected to stumble across the guy out here. Looking had been more a point of proving that he wasn’t involved in this, he was doing his part, being one of the good guys for once. And when he bought Donovan back, there likely wouldn’t be any applause, although considering he had found the guy out here he’d deserve it. Crossing his arms over his chest, Damon stood his ground on the path, a narrowed eyed gaze still focused on the blade in Matt’s hands. He wouldn’t put it past the kid to take a swing with the thing after all that had happened with his girlfriend and his sister. Wasn’t likely to manage to do much damage when he was staring at him like that though. So he hadn’t been aware of how long he’d been out there. Interesting. Clucking his tongue, Damon tugged one arm free, settled a hand over his heart as he gave Donovan an empathetic look. ”Oh Matty Boy, I’m really touched that you’d think I’d drag all the way out here just to play a joke on you. Do you honestly think I’d go scuffing these boots for not even a single chuckle?” Shaking his head, Damon took a step towards him finally, blue eyes sweeping Matt up and down now instead of just the blade. ”You’ve been gone a week. Everybody’s freaked. Now let me say this slowly … so you get it … where … have … you … been?” He spoke as slowly as he’d threatened, annunciating each word clearly. Compulsion could rob someone of their memories in a second, if Matt had been compelled out here then there was someone in town with something to hide.

Matt had no idea what he was doing out at Fell’s Church but he wanted to remember more than anything. It didn’t make any sense, his arms looked like they had almost been cut to shreds and were covered in blood and yet for some reason they didn’t hurt at all. He wasn’t sure whether that was down to adrenaline or something else entirely but he knew that he needed to find out. The date showing on his watch was another thing that concerned him, he knew that it had to be wrong as otherwise that would mean that somehow he had lost a week and he refused to believe that. He knew that strange things happened in Mystic Falls all the time, even though he didn’t know exactly what those things were he had seen enough suspicious news reports to know that something out of the ordinary was going on in the town but the truth was that he wasn’t sure that he wanted to find out what was really going on. If he knew then there was every chance that he could be dragged into something that he didn’t want to be involved in and when that happened it was usually impossible to get out of it. He had seen it happen time and time again with his mom and Vicki when they had found themselves getting involved with the wrong people and he knew that he wasn’t going to make the same mistakes that they had done. Vicki was gone and their mom had left Mystic Falls in her rear view mirror once more, hopefully for good this time, and while it was true that Matt often dreamed of being able to see the world one day for now he just wanted to get through his last couple of years at High School in peace and he knew that he wasn’t going to let anything derail him for that. If he worked hard then he knew there was a chance he might be able to land a football scholarship and if he did then he hoped that for the first time in his life he might be able to go outside of Mystic Falls. For now he had much more pressing matters at hand, however, and being around Damon Salvatore didn’t really help. He couldn’t remember why but there was something about the guy that he had never liked and the truth was he was the last person that Matt wanted to see. To begin with he had felt sure that Damon was just messing with him when he said that he had been gone for a week, it seemed like something that he would do, but then again Matt knew that he didn’t really have any reason to. He had kept his distance from the eldest Salvatore as much as he could and even though he knew that Damon could be vindictive when he wanted to be there was usually some kind of a reason behind it. As Damon reiterated that he had been gone for a week Matt opened his mouth to speak but no words came out so he quickly closed it again. Had it not been for the fact that his watch was also a week out then he would have quite happily ignored Damon but now he was more determined than ever to find his way back to town so he could get some answers. “I have no idea, that’s what I need to find out,” he admitted. He couldn’t even think what the last thing he remembered was so if it wasn’t Damon playing a trick on him then he knew that someone or something had to have messed with his head. The more he thought about it the more a memory began to resurface. “The last thing I remember is having a few drinks with Ty and then heading home, it is all a blur after that,” he explained. He wished he could remember more but at the moment that was all that he had and if what Damon was saying was true then that must have happened a week ago. Knowing that he needed to get back to town he started making his way forward once more but he came to a stop as a noise reached his ears. “Did you hear that?” he asked, straining to hear it again. It had sounded like footsteps but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something seemed off about them, that they weren’t quite human. DAMON SALVATORE

Whoever had given Mystic Falls its name had definitely possessed a twisted sense of humour. When he’d been growing up things had seemed normal here, a perfectly picturesque little slice of the south, complete with small minds, bigoted asshole landowners who liked to rule their little bits of this domain with their fists. They were willing to send their sons off to fight for the place while they sat at home, preaching over the things that went bump in the night, gathering together to ensure that Mystic Falls didn’t live up to its name. That was an absolute fail right there. There were witches under their noses and their own sons were being lured in by the creatures, not all unwillingly. These days it seemed there was more than just magic and blood feasting going on here, although those were probably the things luring a big bad Mikaelson problem back to town. Stefan had levelled with him, telling him what had been revealed by Elijah Mikaelson. Elena, Tatia and even Katherine were in danger here. At first he’d half regretted coming back across the town lines but as Stefan had revealed all Damon had realised that what he’d heard out there about what was coming was only part of this story. When Matt had been reported missing he doubted that another piece was falling into place, and, it seemed, so had the others when accusatory glances had fallen on him, but as the week had dragged on it had become a case of ‘who the hell knew what was going on’.
Beating the bushes had felt pretty fruitless but at least he’d been doing his part. The last thing he’d expected, or any of the others would have expected, was that he’d actually find Donovan out here in the woods with a good dose of amnesia. Surprise surprise it hadn’t stopped him from instantly leaping on the ‘liar, liar, pants on fire bandwagon’. For once he wasn’t trying to manipulate the truth and it looked like light was dawning on the yonder blond head as his crooned quip finally broke through that judgy little wall. ”But at least you believe I didn’t go knocking you over the head and dragging you out here for a little fun and games…” Narrowing his eyes, Damon considered compulsion to drag the secrets out of Donovan. He’d been out here a week, likely without the protection of vervain. Compared to that blade though … the drug probably wouldn’t have proven much more than a placebo. Damon’s nose wrinkled at the scent of the blood on Donovan’s arms. ”Lockwood said he didn’t have a clue where you were. Told his little story about your buddy time and then …” He snapped his fingers, puffed his cheeks out dramatically for a moment. ”…you pulled a Houdini.” Damon was about to gestured to the blade, about to start pushing for where the hell Matt had laid his hands on something like that out here when the kid tried to draw his attention away. Blue eyes narrowing again Damon turned in a tight circle, ears, eyes, nose, all straining for some sign of what was out here. There was something … off … in the air around them. Backing up, Damon went to shove Matt behind him. ”This is why you’re not meant to go strolling around out here on your own Cinderella. There are things out here now you’ve got no clue about.” Seeing something blur in the woods on his right Damon let his fangs snap out, black veins instantly crawling up beneath his eyes as he darted towards the thing. Nothing with altruistic motives moved that way.

Matt had no idea what had happened to him a week ago or where he had been since then he only knew that he was determined to find answers. He wasn’t sure he would like what he did eventually find but he knew that he at least had to try. So much had happened over the last year or so, Vick had die and his mom had left town for good and Matt had been left to fend for himself once more. That was something that he had grown used to while he was growing up, he had never met his dad and his mom had pretty much written the book on how to be a flighty parent. He knew that she loved him but she had never been much of a mother and given Vicki’s tendency to go off the rails and disappear for weeks on end he’d had to grow up far too fast and learn how to look after himself. It hadn’t been so bad before when there had been at least a little money coming in from elsewhere to pay the bills, put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads but now he was on his own and he had come to realise that the only person he could rely on was himself. His life had been turned upside down more than once lately and now he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was soon going to find out that the same thing had happened again. He still didn’t know the truth about Vicki’s death but he knew that there had to be more to it than there seemed. Even in her wildest moments she had always been careful and he had always believed that she would find her way back home when she was ready so he knew that something serious had to have happened to change that. For now he had more pressing things to worry about though, finding out what had really happened to Vick was something that he wanted to do but at the moment he was more concerned about what he was doing out by Fell’s Church after having apparently disappeared a week ago. He had absolutely no recollection of what had happened during that time and he wasn’t sure that he wanted to know either but something told him that he needed to find out. Matt knew that he could have made his way back to town on his own but for once it seemed like Damon had decided he was worth bothering with although truth be told Matt would have been happier left on his own. He didn’t know a lot about Damon but he already knew that he didn’t like the guy and he knew that he didn’t want to spend any more time in his company than was absolutely necessary. As Damon spoke, Matt simply shrugged. “One thing I do know about you is that when you play games you like the person to know you’re up to something. You’re not doing that now,” he explained. He had seen it happen time and time again but this time he honestly believed Damon to be innocent. “I wish I could remember what happened after that,” he muttered, more to himself than to Damon. It seemed hard to believe that that had happened a week ago but he had absolutely no idea what had happened after that. Matt was soon distracted by a noise nearby and as Damon pushed him back Matt didn’t offer any resistance, momentarily too stunned to do anything. He snapped out of it soon enough though as Damon’s face changed. “What are you?” he breathed, a memory floating at the edge of his mind seemingly just beyond his reach. Before he could press for answers, however, a movement caught his eye and Damon disappeared faster than anyone should be able to. No sooner had he gone than Matt heard another noise behind him and he whirled around as he realised that he was no longer alone. What he came face to face with wasn’t human but Matt had no idea what it actually was. The teeth and claws alone were enough to alarm the teenager but instead of freezing he snapped to action, swinging the sword like it was an extension of his arm rather than something he had only picked up for the first time a few minutes ago as the creature lunged at him, clearly going in for the kill. Matt’s moves were made on instinct than anything and a few minutes later the creature was lying dead on the ground before him leaving Matt to look on in horror, no longer sure what had happened to Damon. Given what he’d done in his attempt to free Katherine from the tomb, what he’d done to Stefan over the last century and what he’d done to those in Mystic Falls since he’d arrived back, it was no wonder that he wasn’t trusted, let alone liked in a lot of cases. They didn’t see Damon Salvatore, the love sick sap who’d spent more than a century pining for Katherine Pierce. They saw the Damon who compelled Caroline into doing his bidding, the Damon who’d accidentally turned Vicki Donovan, the Damon who got bored and grew violent just to dick around with people, the Damon who’d switched his emotions off and didn’t give a damn. That Damon wouldn’t have bothered trekking out here to find Vicki’s poor lonely little brother and wouldn’t have risked a pair of John Varvatos jeans for a hunter, even if he’d been looking to take a little nip at her neck afterwards. Not feeling much gratitude at all from Matt he’d almost been tempted to turn back around and walk out of the woods leaving Donovan to make his own way back. They wouldn’t expect any more from him and hell, with that blade Matt was probably more than capable of taking care of himself. He hadn’t moved though and for once, despite the temptation, he hadn’t screwed with the kid. Might’ve been fun though, or at the very least satisfying.
It had been a simple matter of pulling the wool over all their eyes before but Donovan looked to have grown a little wiser since Vicki had been killed. In fact, they all had. A little death and destruction had a tendency to make you grow up quickly. Damon smirked, dipping his head in agreement. ”It’s only fun if they’ve got the ammunition to fight back. Giving them no chance gets boring.” It also had a tendency to tug painfully at a conscience that had started to feel a little raw these days. Spreading his hands as Donovan finished his explanation, Damon tried to indicate that the truth was obvious then. He wasn’t out here for fun, wasn’t out here to do anything but drag Donovan’s ass home and stop them all fretting. Shifting on his feet, Damon wondered whether it was worth trying to crack Matt’s memory now or wait until he got him back to the Boarding House. It was obvious what the popular vote would be. ”If it doesn’t come back by the time I get the lost sheep home then we’ll find a way to get them back.” At one time his suggestions for how to do it wouldn’t have been so considerate. Consideration was a new thing, along with his conscience, but it was still new enough to toss aside when necessary.
As the noise started in the woods Damon shoved at Matt, getting the boy behind him in a protective move he once would’ve foregone. ”Explanations can wait til I’ve saved your ass,” Damon growled. A heartbeat later and he was charging off into the woods. Patience might’ve been a wiser move. No sooner than he charged towards the thing than he found himself bowled over onto his ass. Damon hit a tree shoulder first, dropping down onto his hands and knees as the thing moved off through the woods. He pushed his way to his feet, shaking his head as he turned back towards the spot where he left Donovan. Crap. Damon blurred back in his direction, arriving at the tree line just in time to see Donovan go to work with the sword. Fangs retracted, veins retreating back into his skin as he watched the thing tumble to the ground leaving a horrified Donovan standing over him. ”Not remembering the week learning to Ninja the hell out of that blade yet?” he asked, taking a couple of slow steps towards the corpse of the thing as he brushed himself off. Maybe the question should’ve been what Donovan was rather than what he was.

For most of Matt’s life most things had seemed out of his control. His dad had left before he was even born and his mom had taken off whenever she felt like it. As for Vicki, she had stuck around more than either of their parents ever had done but even she had left him eventually. Now he was completely alone and even though there were certain things he knew he could deal with like the fact that he had to work every shift he could get t the Grill just to keep a roof over his head and food on the table he hated now knowing what had happened during that missing week. A part of him wanted to believe that Damon was just messing around with him but he knew that he was nothing to Stefan’s brother, there was no reason for him to try messing with his head so Matt knew that he just had to take the guy at his word. “I forgot that’s how you like to get your kicks for a moment,” he admitted with a shrug. He was still no closer to getting to the bottom of what had happened but he knew that he needed to get answers although first he knew that he needed to get out of the woods and get back home. From what Damon had said all of his friends had been worried about him and he knew that he needed to let them know that he was alright. “How do you propose we do that?” he asked, not too sure just what it was that Damon had up his sleeve if his memories didn’t come back on their own. He also wasn’t sure why Damon was so bothered but he knew better than to question that at the moment. Damon being protective was something that Matt hadn’t seen before so he was a little surprised when Damon put himself between Matt and whatever danger it was that had found them but what bothered Matt more was the way that Damon’s face seemed to change and the speed with which he moved. He hadn’t seen anything like it before and he was already starting to suspect that Damon was something more than human which meant that Stefan likely was too. Matt had grown up in Mystic Falls but he was so used to not thinking anything out of the ordinary was going on that it was going to take some time to get his head around but the moment the creature stepped into his path he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to go back to his ignorant way of thinking. There was so much about what had happened lately that didn’t make sense but in that moment Matt’s instincts took over and he only really came to his senses when the creature was dead and Matt was horrified about what he had done. It was clear that the creature wasn’t human but he had still killed it and he wasn’t sure how he was going to be able to live with that. “I haven’t got a clue,” he said honestly, the katana still clutched firmly in his hand like a lifeline in that moment. “What is that thing?” he asked before finally tearing his gaze away from the corpse to look over at Damon. “What are you?”DAMON SALVATORE

Usually he would have Donovan as depressingly easy pickings. Caroline’s current beau had proven all too easy to fool before. Compulsion had prevented him from being aware of what was going on right under his nose in Mystic Falls. It had hidden the truth about his sister’s death with him, had disguised what had gone on with Caroline and the others. Every little hint of something unusual in the town had been covered up with it and it was going to remain that way as long as possible. All he needed was one of the Scooby Gang calling Liz Forbes and her merry gang of Council Members down on him. There was going to be enough trouble in this town soon enough, which meant that a mysterious disappearance was going top of Damon’s hinky metre. No doubt it had been the conclusion the others had all drawn after he’d sworn blind he didn’t have anything to do with this. Donovan seemed to be coming to the same conclusion, although he wasn’t done taking a poke at how he made himself happy. Tutting, Damon rocked back on his heels. ”People don’t usually forget when they’re the one I’m getting my kicks from. I’d say it was your girlfriend at the moment, given that she needed a little comforting but I didn’t think you’d appreciate me hugging it out with Caroline.” Even kidding about it was risking that blade and Stefan had things just as dangerously pointy in his arsenal for when his big brother went full jerk around him. They were going to have to put up with flexing his muscles if Donovan’s amnesia act didn’t disappear fast though. Blue eyes narrowed, the corners of Damon’s mouth pulling into the sort of smirk that was usually met with disapproval. ”Oh Matty Boy. I have my ways. Just you wait and see how that noggin of yours starts behaving once we get you out of here.” Compelling the memories out of him was going to have to end with him being compelled to forget how he’d recovered his memories of course. Their blue-eyed boy was to be kept in the dark, for his sake.
Compulsion had gone from being a maybe to being a definitely in just the blink of an eye. Damon put aside the teasing, put aside Donovan’s questions to charge in to the woods after the thing that had come at them. He wasn’t the one to put it on the ground this time though. He’d been busy bouncing around the trees like a piñata, getting back to his feet just in time to see Donovan do his thing. Slowly, Damon knelt beside the creature, making sure he kept a wise distance from the blade Matt was still holding in a way that could do far too much damage. ”You’ve got no clue but you managed to use it to kill this thing anyway?” Damon wouldn’t snorted with derision, not believing a word out of his mouth but Donovan wasn’t a good enough liar to pull this off. He grimaced, used one hand to roll the thing over on to its back. Damon’s brow furrowed as he studied it, trying to figure out if it was like the thing the hunter had taken out on the day he’d rolled back in to town. ”To steal your answer, I haven’t got a clue,” he drawled, the frown turning into a beatific smile as he looked up at Matt. ”What do you think I am Matty Boy? Come on, think really hard, set those cogs in that empty head in motion. Bet you guess right first time.” Damon didn’t make a move but he let his fangs snick down again anyway, waggling his eyebrows at Matt to encourage an answer from the kid. Wouldn’t hurt to let him find out for certain before those memories were wiped free from his struggling brain.

The last week was nothing more than a blur but Matt was already starting to see that things were different. He wished he could remember what had happened during that time or how he had ended up out at Fell’s Church but he was determined to get answers one way or another. He felt bad that his friends had been worried about him, they always seemed to have so much going on in their lives at the moment that he often felt like he was being pushed to the background but he knew that when it really mattered they would always be there for him. They had rallied around him after Vicki was found and they had done so again when he had told his mother to leave town. He was the only Donovan left in Mystic Falls and that wasn’t easy since it meant that he had to juggle school, football practice and working at the Grill and he didn’t doubt that his friends would have helped him out there too if he had asked but he had always been independent and he knew that he wasn’t going to let that change now. He was determined to do things his own way but unfortunately that meant that he didn’t have that much free time on his hands. He had no idea how he was going to deal with having lost a week’s worth of wages but at the moment that really was the least of his problems. For the time being he was stuck in the middle of nowhere with someone he really didn’t like and he wanted nothing more than to get home and tell his friends that he was fine. He knew that they must have been worried about him if Damon had been enlisted to help join the search so he knew that he needed to get back to town as quickly as he could. As Damon spoke Matt felt anger start to build within him. “Stay away from her,” he warned. He didn’t know exactly what had happened between Damon and Caroline but he did know that it hadn’t ended well and it had affected Caroline more than she had wanted to let anyone believe. Just the thought of Damon trying to mess with her head again didn’t sit well with him and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to stop that from happening. “How do I know you wouldn’t just do something to mess with my head?” he challenged, knowing that that was definitely something that Damon would do. There were gaps in his memory, things that he couldn’t explain other than what had happened during the last week, and no matter how hard he tried he just couldn’t shake the feeling that Damon had something to do with it. The moment the creature started moving towards them those thoughts were instantly pushed out of his mind and the next thing he knew was the creature, whatever it was, was lying on the ground in front of him. He didn’t know how he had suddenly learned how to fight but the creature was dead and he knew that its blood was firmly on his hands. The thing had been about to kill him and yet he still couldn’t help but feel guilty at taking a life, even of something that clearly wasn’t human. Soon enough Damon was back and Matt shook his head. “I don’t know how I managed to do that, I wish I did,” he admitted. None of what had happened made any sense but he was starting to think that he just wasn’t going to get the answers that he needed while he was out there. He needed to figure out what had happened during that missing week and how he had somehow managed to master sword fighting without even knowing it. There was one other thing that was still bothering him, however, and that was what Damon Salvatore was. Snippets of memories seemed to be coming back to him, lots of little things that just hadn’t made sense at the time but seeing Damon’s face change and his teeth extend was enough to put the pieces together in the teenager’s mind and he took an involuntary step backwards. “You’re a vampire,” he breathed. A hundred and fifty years ago he’d run from a battle in woods like these. Not believing in what the South stood for, finally given the guts to go against his father’s wishes, he’d fled from Gettysberg. If he hadn’t Damon knew he would’ve been buried in woods like these, among the saps he’d marched with, those who hadn’t walked away from the front lines. Giuseppe might’ve believed that walking had meant his son was a coward but in fact it was the opposite Cowardice would’ve been not standing up for what he believed in. It had taken balls to walk away, the sort that Donovan was demonstrating now as the warning was spat in his direction. Up until now it had looked like Donovan hadn’t had any but just maybe … Damon held his hands up, the tut giving way to a beatific smile that barely concealed the wickedness beneath. ”I was just offering a little comfort while her boyfriend was communing with nature…” he promised. In reality he’d moved on from Caroline, from using her, Bonnie and Elena to get what he wanted here. There was no point it in anymore when Elena was the one he was supposed to be protecting. Some things weren’t easily forgotten though and Matt was obviously picturing him using Caroline as his puppet again … as well as him lying about having zero to do with what had happened to him. Rolling his eyes, Damon gestured between the two of them. ”Didn’t we already get it established that I haven’t gone messing with your head?” he asked. ”There’d be no point in me doing that now. Do you people really think I have that much time on my hands or give that big a damn about you?” The truth was that he had messed with their heads, of his own accord to get his hands on the moonstone, to try and free Katherine, and when someone has asked him to. Other times it had been asked of him, to stop Matt from realising the truth about what had happened to his sister, to cover up what had happened in town.
For once none of this had been him. He hadn’t lured Matt out into the woods and held him captive for a week, he hadn’t tried to screw with everybody else for his own agenda. In fact it was the opposite and here he was, for the second time in as many weeks getting himself tossed around in the woods protecting someone else. Or … Damon thought as he looked up at Matt from where he knelt, probably ruining another pair of perfectly good jeans … being protected by someone else. Matt Donovan was usually the one voted most likely to end up monster-fodder but here he was swinging that blade like a pro. ”One more mystery about what happened while you were gone,” he murmured almost sarcastically. ”Nobody becomes a ninja in a week Donovan.” It was the truth, even if Matt had been bitten and turned by something he wouldn’t have become a bladesmith, that sort of training took years. They weren’t going to find out how it had been managed in a week now though. They would have to pull that veil off earlier, this afternoon they were finally going to pull off a different one. With Matt putting together the pieces Damon flashed his fangs, let his face go through the change to something entirely inhuman. ”Give the boy a medal,” Damon drawled as he immediately changed back. He pushed his way to his feet, taking a step closer to Matt. ”You’ve got no idea how hard it was keeping you from finding that out. You would’ve thought they were all trying to keep you in the dark. Speaking of which, we need to get rid of this thing before someone else stumbles on it.” The last time the hunter had burned the body, turning what was left of the creature to ash to disguise the form it had taken. Blue eyes narrowed shrewdly, studying the ground around them to see if there was the room to do it again.

One thing Matt had never liked was feeling helpless. From a young age he had realised that he had to be the man of the house, his dad had never been in the picture and given what his mother was like leaning on her had never really been an option. Matt was used to only being able to rely on himself, that was something that he had grown used to over the years and truth be told he wasn’t sure that he would want that to change now. There were times when he was growing up that he had found himself in awe of his friends when he saw them with their families. His family had never been like that, his mother had been gone most of the time and Vicki had been the same and too many times he had been left wondering if one of them would end up being found lying in a ditch somewhere. It was something that he had heard other people around town saying now and then and in the end it had proved to be true. He had sent his mother away after he found out that she and Tyler were carrying on behind his back and Vicki was gone. He knew his friends would always be there but lately it had been feeling like the only person he could really rely on was himself and now he wasn’t even sure who he was any more. Something felt different, he had lost a week of his life somehow before waking up in the woods and he had absolutely no idea what had happened during that time but he knew that he needed to find out one way or the other. Damon seemed adamant that he wasn’t playing with his head and deep down Matt knew that he really had no choice but to believe him. For some reason Damon had joined the search and that alone was enough to make Matt realise that his friends were probably more worried about him than he would have thought. He knew that he needed to get back to them sooner rather than later and figure out exactly what had happened during the week he was gone but something seemed determined to stop that from happening. For a long time, too long perhaps, Matt had been oblivious to the fact that there was more going on in Mystic Falls than met the eye. He had been too happy to put all of the strange disappearances down as being animal attacks but the moment the creature attacked he knew that it had to have been more than that. He had reacted on instinct, albeit instincts he hadn’t even known that he had, and he had killed the creature. It was clear that it wasn’t human but with everything else that was going on he couldn’t help but feel guilty for that. As Damon said that no one became a ninja in a week, Matt found himself nodding. “You’re right,” he agreed. “I have no idea how I did that. Something has changed but I don’t know what,” he admitted. He had occasionally heard people say that it was normal for teenagers not to feel at home in their own skin but this was something completely different. He didn’t feel like himself at all and that scared him but he knew that he had to figure out what was going on. “So Vicki was telling the truth,” he breathed. He hadn’t believed her when she had said that she was attacked by a vampire, he had thought that she was high and imagining things but now he wasn’t so sure. “Did you attack my sister?” he asked even though he wasn’t too sure he knew what the answer to that question actually was. “Wait, what do you mean they were all trying to keep me in the dark? Who exactly knows the truth about all of this?” he asked as he looked over at Damon. Some of the people who were closest to him had been lying to him and he needed to know who. Matt’s mind was racing with possibilities and only seemed to calm a little when Damon said they needed to get rid of the body and he nodded, knowing that Damon was right. “How shall we do that, bury it?” he asked, pretty sure that Damon had more experience with this kind of thing than he did. If he’d really had his switch flipped still Damon knew he wouldn’t be feeling an ounce of sympathy for Matt now. Even if it would’ve gained him something he doubted he would’ve gone traipsing through the woods trying to find him. The guy just hadn’t been that important, until it started looking like whatever was about to threaten Elena had started casting a dark cloud in another direction. Motivation had struck then and not just the sort that was looking for superficial gratuity when he dragged Matt Donovan out of here like a lost puppy. Things in this town were growing more dangerous by the minute, especially for Elena and her little band of Merry Women, Donovan included. Just a few short months ago the biggest problem in town had been him, Damon was ready to admit that. Like Niklaus Mikaelson there’d been something here he wanted, someone he’d wanted and in the desperation to get her, he’d done anything necessary, and a few things not quite so necessary. Katherine had been the only important thing, the woman still pulling his strings after a century. It was the doppelganger way, something Matt could probably attest to if his brain wasn’t all scrambled up by whatever the hell had kept him out of sight for a week. They suckered you in, they got you to care, and then with their heel of choice, they stomped all over your heart.
Staring at the thing on the ground, Damon wondered if it might’ve been easier to let the thing rip out his heart. It would stop it stinging, would stop him from making the same mistake a second time. When it came to Katherine he’d been in the dark from the very start, only he’d been too blind to notice it, now Donovan was the blind one. Damon’s mouth pinched as he scowled up at Matt. ”Use your big words here Matty, I know you’ve taken a few knocks to that noggin of yours on the field but I’m sure you can dig a little deeper. What’s … different?” Damon drew out the last two words, somehow hoping that in doing so he’d break through that thick wall inside Donovan’s very thick skull. You couldn’t go through the sort of thing that turned you into a ninja overnight and not have one single idea of how it had happened. Then again it wasn’t the first thing Matt had been blind to. For the better part of a year they’d lied to him, keeping him in the dark for his own sake. If it had been up to him Damon knew he would’ve shattered Little Boy Blue’s world view by now but the others had wanted him to wait, hadn’t wanted Matt to suffer. Dusting his hands off on his jeans, sending little flurries of broken leaves into the air, Damon tilted his head from one side to the other. ”We won’t split hairs on the word. Did I bite your sister in the woods? I did. Was I involved later? Hmm…” Damon lifted the hand he’d been dusting himself off with, tilting it side to side. By the time they’d had to kill Vicki Donovan things were messy, blame being pointed in his direction maybe, at the very same time they were asking him to perform a little vampire lobotomy. Realising he’d maybe been a little rash with rubbing the truth in Donovan’s face, Damon suddenly turned on the guile, tapping a finger against his lips. ”Maybe we need to schedule a little group therapy to discuss that,” he said evasively. ”After we’ve dealt with … that.” The scowl was back, Damon’s hands rubbing over the thighs of his jeans again. ”Last time we burned it. I guess a pile of ash is a little less likely to be picked over by the cops than a shallow grave and a funky looking corpse.” Blue eyes cut around them again, looking for the sort of dry brush the hunter had used last time.

Waking up in the woods with no recollection of how he got there had been disorienting for Matt to say the least but the events that had unfolded so far since Damon found him certainly hadn’t helped matters. Damon had been trying to make him remember what had happened but no matter how hard Matt tried he just couldn’t recall anything that had happened over the last week. To learn that he had lost so much time had come as a shock and he had a feeling that it wouldn’t truly sink in until he saw his friends again but for now he had much more pressing matters to worry about. Damon was hiding something from him, of that he was certain, and he really didn’t like it. He had trusted the people around him but now seeing the creature that had attacked him was enough to call into question a few things that had happened over the last year or so. In the past he had always been blissfully ignorant to what was really going on around him and a part of him wished he could go back to that but the creature that had attacked him wasn’t human and the way he had wielded the sword and killed it just wasn’t natural, not when he had never held a sword before in his life. Something strange was going on and he knew that he needed to get to the bottom of it but something told him that not only was that not going to be easy but that it would also take time. He had a feeling that it was something that he would end up needing the help of his friends with but for now he knew that he was on his own. Well, not quite. In true Damon Salvatore fashion he just didn’t know when to let a matter drop and it was really starting to irritate Matt. “I don’t know, that’s the problem,” Matt said angrily as Damon asked him, not for the first time, what was different. “I can’t explain it, I just don’t feel like myself,” he added. Something had happened to him, of that much he was certain, but what it was he had no idea and the more time that went by the more he was starting to wonder if he was perhaps better off not knowing. He had already killed one creature without even thinking about it so the truth was he was a little scared of what he might do next. “Being able to suddenly wield a sword like that isn’t natural but I didn’t hesitate when that thing attacked,” she said carefully as he looked down at the creature. He had reacted on instinct and he knew it had saved his life but he had no idea where those instincts had come from. Damon had always had a way of making Matt’s blood boil but as he admitted to biting Vicki before brushing everything else off it was enough to make him snap and before he knew what he was doing he had grabbed Damon roughly and holding the sword to his neck. “Tell me the truth,” he growled, unaware that in that moment his eyes were glowing and the fox spirit that had been infused with his own had become visible. “What did you do to my sister?” A part of him was sure he didn’t want to know but he knew that he needed to. Something awful had happened to Vicki before she disappeared and the more time he was spending with Damon the more he was starting to think that the vampire was responsible for all of it. He knew the body of the creature still needed to be dealt with but in that moment it was the last thing on his mind. DAMON SALVATORE
