Claire had known even before she had decided to move to Mystic Falls that the town wasn’t like any that she had come across for a while. She had been there once years ago with her family and she had already visited the places that she had gone to with her husband and children but things had changed so much since then. She had been on her own for such a long time other than a few friends that she had made along the way and she had wanted to go somewhere that reminded her of the people that she had loved and lost. She had fond memories of her family from the time that they had spent there together and it was also the town that Stefan and Damon had grown up in. She hadn’t seen either of them since she left London to start a new life after Violet died and if she was honest she had been somewhat avoiding the two of them ever since she became a vampire. To begin with it had been out of shame – she had avoided showing up for the meeting they had arranged because she hadn’t felt ready for them to learn just what she had become. It seemed foolish now but it had made sense to her at the time and it had taken her a while to accept the turn that her life had taken. Now she was no longer afraid of what she was, nor was she ashamed of it. She might not necessarily embrace it the way that others did but she made sure to live her life the way she wanted to and thankfully it seemed to work for her. Seeing Damon again had been a surprise but if she was honest it was a pleasant one. She had always had a soft spot for both brothers and after everything that they had been through together they were the closest thing to family that she had left. She knew that there was a lot that she would have to tell him and she would have to do the same with Stefan as well when she reunited with him too but for now she was more interested in letting her hair down and having a little fun. She didn’t doubt that the two brothers had been through a lot since she had last seen them as well and she couldn’t deny that she was curious as to what they had been up to as well but for now all of that could wait for a while, or at least until she had thrashed Damon at pool. “Well, I’m definitely not one of them,” she teased. She had learned a long time ago what Damon Salvatore’s ego was like and she refused to inflate it any more than she needed to. She would be lying if she said that she wasn’t worried about Damon infiltrating a Council that hated all things supernatural but she knew that she just had to trust that he knew what he was doing. If he ended up getting himself into trouble then she would no doubt end up helping him the same way that she had done before but she honestly hoped that it wouldn’t come to that. “Nothing at all since it’s not going to work,” she said, her smile turning playful as she turned to face him after potting another ball. She really was just playing around with Damon, pool was something that she had played quite often over the decades but there was no way that she was going to let him know that. As he moved so that he was sitting on the edge of the table Claire didn’t miss a beat and took another shot, watching with smug satisfaction as the ball fell into the pocket. “The more interesting question is what will you give me when you lose,” she corrected as she lined up another shot. “You know me Damon, I don’t like losing.”DAMON SALVATORE

It was funny how fast you could fall back into a pattern. He’d done it every single time he’d headed back to Mystic Falls but this time it wasn’t his typical modus operandi. The people around them were still standing, he hadn’t slaughtered half of them in an attempt to make Claire crack and tell him exactly what had happened when she was supposed to have come met them here or why she was back now. It was a return to the sort of form that had been a distraction in London – from Katherine, from the burn of the blood lust in his system, from the trouble he was getting himself in. Barring the blood lust it wasn’t that different now, Katherine was still an issue, despite the fact that he now knew that she’d never been in love with him, and trouble was a constant companion. Damon knew he probably should’ve come with some sort of warning but instead of admitting all that was going on to Claire here he’d allowed himself to fall back into old ways with her once he’d established to his satisfaction that she wasn’t a pawn of the Mikaelsons in the same way her and her sister had been a pawn to others. Dancing around one another, taking those little jabs at egos and hearts. He’d be damned if it didn’t have him feeling downright homely about the entire thing. Some part of him really had missed this. Had missed her.
Claire never had been like anybody else. She’d seen something in him that he didn’t allow most to see, hell she’d seen things that he didn’t even allowed himself to see. Damon eyed her as he stood alongside the table, his hands restless on the cue. Forget rose coloured spectacles, the woman currently beating his ass here had x-ray vision. He shook his head his smile curving enough to have dimples flashing. ”You never were. The song bird always did have her own way of going and usually it was the opposite direction to everybody else.” Given the opinions on him in town it could be miles away from everybody else’s thoughts or right up alongside them. He’d have laid money on every single one of them believing he’d cheat now and they wouldn’t have been that wrong. Damon knew he might’ve been in over his head in other ways at the moment but not with this. Huddled in close he’d tried to distract Claire the best way he knew how, practically touching his lips to her ear. It didn’t work, the ball clacked into the pocket all the same, leaving him scowling as he straightened up. ”Not even a little?” he asked, pretending to pout. Damn. Stepping back to regroup on the idea, he settled on the edge of the table. She potted another ball as he hovered there, the sulk growing faintly. ”Oh I know,” he crooned as she bent to line up another shot. Considering it for a moment, considering the curve of her body as she bent down in front of him, Damon clucked his tongue. ”What would you want from me?” he asked, adding just a touch of the lascivious to his voice. Humming to himself Damon extended the cue, drawing the end of it slowly up the inside of Claire’s calf as she lined up her shot.

Claire and Violet had always been close while they were growing up and Claire had known that if there was one person that she would always be able to count on then it was her sister. She’d had friends when she was younger and the Salvatore brothers had become like family to her during the time she had spent in London but ever since losing Violet she had never been able to truly fill the void that her sister’s death had left inside of her. She had tried moving on with her life, she had found a good man to marry and they had ended up having children of their own, but even that had proved to be short lived. Her past had caught up with her eventually and that was something that she had never wanted to happen. After losing her family behind she had started over but she hadn’t doubt it easy to start letting people back into her life again. There were a few who had managed it and she knew that they would always have a special place in her heart but being a vampire meant that she couldn’t stay in one place for too long and having to leave everyone behind to avoid drawing suspicion to the fact that she wasn’t ageing was inevitable. Claire knew that she had found a true friend in Ares, the two of them had gone through the police academy together and he knew the truth about what she was but there weren’t many other people in the world that she could say that about. Damon and Stefan still fell into the small group of people that she trusted but she had still felt ashamed. She hadn’t wanted them to see her like this but she knew now that she had been stupid in thinking that way. Damon had accepted her as she was without judgment and she knew that Stefan would too so she was pretty sure that she had done the right thing by moving to Mystic Falls. “It wouldn’t be any fun to follow everyone else,” Claire grinned. She never had liked being told what to do, nor had she liked doing the same as everyone else. She preferred to do her own thing and she had done for as long as she could remember. It had been a difficult decision to leave her family behind so that she could move to London and pursue a career in acting but it was what she had wanted to do. It had been easier having Violet with her, her sister had wanted to become a singer and Claire had dabbled in that as well but it had never been her passion as much as acting. She had liked Violet having her own thing so she had stuck with acting and hadn’t looked back. She had known that the chances of making it were quite small but she had known that she would regret it if she hadn’t tried so she had known that it was the right thing to do at the time. Those dreams had ended up being her sister’s downfall but Claire had at least had the Salvatore brothers come into her life and she knew that that was never going to be a bad thing. “Nope,” Claire teased, a little surprised at just how easy it was to fall back into old habits with Damon. He had ended up getting on her nerves a lot of the time but he had always been there for her when it mattered and she hoped that it might be the same now that they were both in town together. Lining up another shot, Claire couldn’t help but laugh as Damon ran the cue he was holding along her calf. “You really think you’re irresistible, don’t you Salvatore?” she asked, turning to smile at him before turning her focus back to the task at hand. Taking the shot, she managed to sink the last ball into the pocket and her smile turned smug as she looked over at her companion. “I haven’t decided just yet. For now you owe me one,” she said, knowing that she was definitely going to collect on it later. DAMON SALVATORE

Suspicion had pooled cold and greasy in the pit of Damon’s stomach when he’d seen Claire in the Grill. With everything that had happened in town lately he couldn’t trust outright that a face from the past hadn’t been summoned here by Klaus Mikaelson or any of the other big bad things that had started to call the town home. Claire had always been a fighter, willing to put her ass on the line to save people she loved. Honest, a little blunt, not the sort to let him, at least, push her around. If Klaus had arranged it then he sure as hell would’ve picked the wrong person, but as they shot the breeze Damon had become pretty damn sure that the suspicion had been misplaced. Claire was here because of them, over a century after they’d parted ways and his brother had told her to look them up. She had crappy timing, managing to stumble into town right about when things were kicking off here. They always did have lousy timing though. He and Stefan’s appearance in London hadn’t exactly been perfectly scheduled. Months before, maybe they could’ve done something to stop what had happened in the end. After he’d kinda wished he could go back and change it for her, save Violet from her end, save Claire from having to kill her own sister, but wishes were worse than horses, at least with them, you had piles of crap to use as fertilizer. There was no way back to fix things. You just kept on moving on, and sometimes if you were lucky, or unlucky depending on your view, your past caught up to you.
Blue eyes narrowed to bright little slits under a fringe of dark lashes. That was the attitude that had him and Claire butting heads back in London, nudging each other, getting under the other’s skin. For some it would’ve been horrific, for the two of them … it had been fun. ”Hmmm, nope, not when not following gives you this uncanny ability to drive people crazy.” Or make them think. That was what he’d been trying not to do at the time, shoving all the thoughts of Katherine into a neat little box … that he’d now tried to stomp flat. Those bars he’d put himself behind for over a century were a gone, both him and the song bird were free of their cages, fluttering around one another once again. Trying to make sure he won Damon had fluttered a little closer, murmuring into Claire’s ear to try and distract her, obviously failing miserably. ”Damn,” he crooned as he settled back on the edge of the table. ”I’m losing my touch.” Didn’t stop him from trying again though. Leaning back on the table as she lined another shot up, Damon used the cue, drawing the tip of it up the inside of Claire’s calf as she tried to take her shot. Damon glanced up from her legs like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. ”Are you about to break my heart and tell me I’m not?” he asked sweetly. Obviously he wasn’t, or that last ball wouldn’t have clinked into the pocket. Letting out a low, piteous groan, Damon let his head hang. ”That sounds … ominous.” Sighing, Damon pushed his way to his feet. ”For now, I say we start with another round and then best, two out of three. Stay right there song bird.” He aimed the cue at her as he began to back towards the bar. They kept this up and it was going to be a long night.

Claire had known that it was perhaps foolish to head back to Mystic Falls after failing to show up for her meeting with the Salvatore brothers decades ago but she had felt like it would be a good place to start over. She had let her shame and fear overwhelm her and it was the two of those things that had stopped her from reaching out after she was turned into a vampire. She could have done with their support but she had been too stubborn to take it and ever since then she had been trying to find her way on her own. There were a few people who had managed to make a lasting impression on her, Ares had become a friend to her while they were going through the police academy together and even though they had taken different assignments she didn’t doubt that they would stay in touch. He was one of the few people she knew that she could truly trust and he knew what she was which made things a whole lot easier. She always had to be careful when she was around new people because if anyone figured out the truth then she would have to move on. Ares being a warlock meant that they had a mutual respect for each other and that hadn’t changed. Deep down a part of her had longed to reach out to Stefan and Damon but she hadn’t felt like it was her place. She had left that part of her life behind, or at least she had tried to, but if she was honest it was a relief to see Damon again and to know that Stefan was in town as well. Now starting over didn’t seem so bad and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it while she could before she had to move on again. It was still a bit surreal seeing him again but as far as she was concerned it was definitely a good thing. The Salvatore brothers were always going to have a special place in her heart, one that no one else would be able to ever fill, and even though being around Damon again reminded her of the last time they were together when she lost Violet in a way it was still good being around someone who remembered her the way she used to be – human. “Call it payback for all the time you spent driving me crazy in London,” Claire grinned. She knew that Damon was used to getting things his own way and he was also used to people doing what he wanted them to do. That wasn’t her style though, she had always liked to keep Damon and everyone else around her on their toes and she was pretty sure that that was never going to change. Claire knew that Damon was doing his best to distract her and make sure that he won the game but she wasn’t that easily swayed and she couldn’t help but laugh as he said that he was losing his touch. “Since when have you ever known me to be so easily swayed?” she asked, an eyebrow raised as she looked over at him. It was true that she had done just about everything that Henry and Samuel had asked of her back in London but that had been under the effect of compulsion and now things were very different. “It is. You never know what I’m going to ask you to do,” she said, an amused smile working its way across her face as her eyes met his. As he spoke again, a laugh escaped her lips. “You’re really that eager to lose to me again?”DAMON SALVATORE

Life was a vicious circle, if anybody should’ve known that by now it was him. Damon had found himself spinning around and around on the damn thing, occasionally swinging a hand out and managing to hold onto something else for a minute or two. It was always torn free of his grip though or he looked to see it slowly turning rotten beneath his grip. Sometimes he found himself holding onto nothing at all when he’d been so certain it was there. In London Claire had been one of those brief grabs for something before that too had grown rancid with what she’d been forced to do for his sake. He should’ve known that eventually that circle would swing around again, the universe bringing her back into view and leaving him wracked with questions. Was this merely another trick Niklaus Mikaelson was trying to pull on them all? Was he gonna look up again later and find himself face to face with something else going bad in his life or had that tangled circle of the last hundred and fifty years finally decided to fling him free. Damon doubted he’d done anything to deserve that and by now he knew that fate had a serious hate on for his family. Whatever crimes Giuseppe had committed had tarnished his sons and they in turn had only compounded the issue. Not that he’d ever say that aloud of course, Damon Salvatore had always thrown two fingers up at fate and sworn he was going his own way with everything. Only nobody ever got to really do that, did they?
It was all preordained destiny. Katherine turning him and Stefan in the first place. Their travelling to London during one of those times when he wasn’t trying to make Stefan’s life a misery. Walking into that music hall and hearing Claire’s voice. Her being forced to kill Violet after he’d been captured and framed for murders he hadn’t committed for once. Claire hadn’t turned up here in the years afterwards, but that circle had spun back around again and now it felt like same day, different century, different country. Damon’s eyes widened as he played innocent, fluttering those dark lashes as he held a hand to his chest. ”Time I spent driving you crazy? We remember London very differently,” he crooned. It had been mutual, as it always was when people didn’t instantly give in to him. That give and take, that push and tussle had always been what had gotten under his skin and kept him interested when boredom would’ve had him walking away or taking the bloody way out at any other time. Claire was certainly giving now by kicking his ass at a game he usually ruled at. Giving it back and putting her off certainly would’ve been worth it but each trick he’d tried with her had fallen flat. He pressed his lips together, his expression turning wry for a moment. ”Never,” he grumbled, ”and that’s a problem because I don’t plan on turning out the loser here.” He was though. Demon hung his head, shaking it as Claire admitted she was gonna surprise him with the payment on this. ”Let’s just say I’m ready to go all in,” he told her as he looked back up. ”Double or nothing?” At that he disappeared into the crowd, heading straight for the bar. Forget all in this was him getting way in over his head, making that grab to hold onto something, even if it was just the past.

Claire had thought about reaching out to Stefan and Damon after she became a vampire but she had quickly thought better of it. She knew that they wouldn’t have judged her if she had done but she had made it clear to both of them back in London that she hadn’t wanted to become a vampire after seeing what had happened to Violet and she had meant it. She hadn’t had a choice in being turned by Lord Ainsley and he had forced her to complete the transition as well and it was because of him that she’d had to leave her husband and children behind her. She knew that she could have stayed with them for a few years and seen her children grow up a bit more but she had known that by doing that she would only be delaying the inevitable and that was something that she hadn’t wanted to put any of them through. Had she stayed then she wasn’t sure that she would have been able to leave them at all and if she’d stayed for any longer than she had done then she knew that people would have started asking questions about why she wasn’t aging and she hadn’t wanted to draw any attention to her family if she could help it. She knew that they would have wanted her to stay with them but Lord Ainsley had found her and she wouldn’t have been surprised if people connected to him had figured out what had happened if she’d stayed and the last thing she had wanted was for her family to end up being put in danger. Instead she’d had no choice but to compel them into believing that she had died and she had made them start over somewhere new without her. She had checked in on them from time to time after that but she had known that she couldn’t be a part of their lives any longer and she had made her peace with that. She had travelled around a lot and had kept to herself for the most part but there were a few people who had made a lasting impression on her. Ares had become someone that she trusted as they’d made their way through the police academy together and befriending him had made her realise that perhaps she didn’t have to be alone after all. She had wanted to check Mystic Falls out and see just how much it had changed since she was last there and in a way being there made her feel like she was closer to her family since the last time she had gone there they had been with her. She knew that the Salvatore brothers had grown up in the town but it had still surprised her to run into Damon but if she was honest it was a good thing. She might have been hesitant about reaching out to the two of them but it really was good to see Damon again and she was looking forward to being able to see Stefan again as well. “Of course we do,” she laughed. “You and Stefan had your differences back then but I could still see the bond between the two of you, you just drove me crazy trying to hide it.” She knew that by trying to get through to Damon she had probably driven Damon crazy in return and they were both stubborn so it was probably natural that they hadn’t exactly seen eye to eye. After everything they had been through together Stefan and Damon were both still family to her though so she knew that it didn’t really matter too much. That wasn’t going to stop her from thrashing Damon at pool, though, and as he said that he didn’t plan on losing those words were enough to bring a smile to her face. “Is that so?” she challenged, knowing that she wasn’t going to lose either. “Sure but you’re not going to win this one either,” she said, watching as Damon headed back to the bar to get them some more drinks. As he returned the game began and by the time it was over Claire had won once more. “That’s two you owe me now and I’ll make sure to collect, don’t you worry,” she teased, finishing the last of her drink before grabbing her jacket. “I’m staying in town for a while so I’ll see you soon.”DAMON SALVATORE

You could plan your life in Mystic Falls all you wanted but the minute you grew complacent the town would thrown a wrench in to the works. Everything you thought you knew, everything you thought you were getting was suddenly slipping through your fingers or crumbling before your eyes. He’d gotten tired of it. After it had turned out Katherine had spent a century playing him he’d taken off. The town hadn’t been home for a century and a half and with his reason for being here gone and his pride flayed, Damon knew he hadn’t been able to stay. Returning had only happened for Elena. He’d spent a couple of lifetimes making Stefan’s life a misery because he thought his brother had been the one to destroy his life. Oh, if only he’d known then. He hadn’t though and standing on the precipice, or rather, sitting in a crappy motel halfway across the country, he’d only had the choice recently to leave Stefan and Elena to try and dig their way out of the mess themselves or come back and stand at his brother’s side. He’d failed at that before, more than once, this time, it had to change. He just hadn’t been betting on this when he’d returned to town. Damon studied Claire from just inches away, his eyes on the dark fall of hair, the shallow dent in her chin as she concentrated on the game. Mystic Falls, throwing his past back in his face just at a time when he was ready to look at it another way. Message received.
If there was anybody who’d come close to seeing beneath the surface back then, it had been Claire. She’d been close to both him and Stefan before circumstances had gotten … bloody. The best of them, the worst of them, the squabbling and the brotherhood. Enough for her to admit now that she’d been able to see the bond between them. Damon thumped the end of the cue lightly against the floor as he let his hand fall away from his chest. ”Very differently,” he adjusted. He managed to keep up the innocent look for a moment before he snorted. ”The sort of bond between two brothers constantly on the brink of throttling each other.” An exaggeration, one Claire obviously knew about it. He studied her seriously for a moment, his mouth quirked at one corner. ”I was never hiding it, I was just … indulging in my promise.” To make Stefan’s life a living hell. That hadn’t been anywhere close to the worst it had been but the two of them hadn’t entirely had the hatchet buried then either. Not like now. Claire was gonna learn that with time though. Things were different now, he was different. Damon got to his feet, swinging the cue around lightly as he smirked. ”It is so. Prepare to lose, Billie Holiday.” Clucking his tongue, Damon bumped her with his hip as he walked away. He fully intended to win … it just didn’t pan out that way. By the time Claire had thrashed him for a second time he was hanging his head, letting out a groan. ”I’d say best out of three but I have a feeling that might end up with me owing you more than I can pay up,” he drawled. Damon lifted his cue, settling himself back against the table as she finished up her drink and grabbed her jacket. ”Can’t miss the Boarding House. Swing by, make Stefan’s day.” He didn’t say anything about his own. Watching her as she headed out, Damon lifted his drink in farewell. Things were definitely going to get interesting.

Claire had thought about reaching out to the Salvatore brothers after she became a vampire but the truth was that she had been far too ashamed. She had known that they wouldn’t judge her for what she had become, for the choice that she had made to protect her husband and children, but she also knew that they had known that this wasn’t what she would have wanted for herself. She could have taken her own life by now and she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t thought about it often during those first few decades as a vampire but in the end she had realised that even though this wasn’t her choice she didn’t have to be a become a bad person. She could hold onto her humanity with everything she had and find a way of living a life that she could be proud of and she liked to think that she had managed to do that. Stefan had shown her that it was possible to do things differently and over the years she had found a way that worked for her. Being back in Mystic Falls now was enough to make her feel closer to her family given that she had visited the town with them all those years ago when she had left her address in the post office so that Stefan and Damon could find her and right now she knew that she would take any connection to them that she could get. Her life had been a lonely one since she had compelled them to start over without her, there were a few people who had come into her life and made a lasting impression but even fewer of them knew who and what she really was. Now she was ready to start over and given that Stefan and Damon were both in town it seemed like she might have at last found what she was looking for – the last remnants of her family. She hadn’t known quite what Damon would make of the person she had become but he hadn’t questioned how it had happened or whether it was something that she’d wanted, instead the two of them had fallen back into old habits and if she was honest it was a relief. She knew that she was going to have to tell him and Stefan the truth sooner or later but for one night at least she didn’t have to worry about that. Instead she could just be the Claire that Damon remembered and that was more than she could have hoped for. “That part is true but you still risked your lives to save each other so I knew that you weren’t lost causes,” she shrugged. If they had really wanted to be rid of each other then they would have done that, Stefan would have let Damon die at the hands of Henry and Samuel or the angry hoards that had chased Damon through London when they believed that he was Jack the Ripper. Instead they had saved each other and that had been enough to make her realise that there was still hope for them. “You were pretty good at that but the question is are you still trying to make Stefan’s life a misery or are the two of you finally on better terms?” she asked, raising an eyebrow as she looked over at him. The way Damon bumped her hip with his own was enough to make her laugh but it wasn’t enough to make her take it easy on him and as their second game came to an end she found a smirk forming on her face as he said that he would have suggested making it best out of three. “Making it best out of three would have meant you would have had to win one match to even have a shot,” she teased, her expression turning playful as she finished the last of her drink. “Don’t you worry, I’ll find the perfect way for you to repay me one day.” How she was going to do that she wasn’t sure yet but she knew that she would figure something out. “I’ll do that,” she nodded as she pulled on her jacket. Damon hadn’t said anything about a visit making his day as well but a part of her hoped that it would. “I’ll see you soon,” she added as she grabbed her bag and headed out.
