Mystic Falls was still very much like Claire remembered it to be, it had been years since she had last been there but finding her way around the town was pretty easy and that was something that she was glad about. She had heard rumours about the town during her travels, for the most part she tended to stay out of the supernatural drama when she could but she had met a few other vampires and some witches along the way and they had been all too happy to let her know that Mystic Falls seemed to attract the supernatural more than most places. She could still remember learning that vampires were real back when she was living in London, it felt like she was a completely different person back then and she wasn’t sure whether that was a good or a bad thing. Back then it had been just her and Violet against the world but Violet had died a long time ago, by her own hands no less in an attempt to save Stefan Salvatore, and for most of her life since then she had been on her own. She had thought about going back to see her family in Ireland but facing them while she knew that they would never get to see Violet again was something that she hadn’t even been able to stand the thought of.
Instead she had opted for starting over and since leaving her husband and children behind a few years after she became a vampire starting over was something that she had done pretty regularly ever since. She hadn’t thought that she would ever return to Mystic Falls after obtaining her daylight ring but her curiosity had ended up getting the better of her and even though she knew that the town was somewhere that she would have been better off avoiding instead she had let nostalgia and the fact that returning to the town might make her feel closer to the family that she had left behind get the better of her. Now she had lined up a job as a police officer and even though she knew that she could have compelled her way into a decent place to stay she had opted for staying in the motel until she could find something a little more permanent. For now she was happy with the way things had worked out and, knowing that she needed to find a way to integrate herself into life in Mystic Falls, Claire soon headed to the Grill. Ordering herself a drink and knowing that she would probably have something to eat a little later she made a beeline for the pool table, sipping her drink before setting it down on the table to the side of her. Racking up the balls she lined up her first shot and took it, watching with satisfaction as two of the same type of balls ended up in the pockets.

There’d been no fanfare, no red carpet, no tearful reunion at the Boarding House when he’d arrived. If anybody had truly missed him then they sure as hell hadn’t shown it when he’d arrived back in Mystic Falls. That was what you got for trying to play the hero, disinterest and a mouthful of vervain. Admittedly the latter had been earned by him trying to take a lump out of a hunter his first night back in town, but still, there’d been some measure of ass saving before he’d gone to take the prize he’d earned. The rest … that’d come when he’d arrived home, or what passed for it these days, and had been entirely underwhelmed by his reception. First Katherine and now his own brother … and their house guests. Climbing out of the Camaro at the curb, Damon shook his head at the thought of just how much the Boarding House was living up to its name now. Elena he could understand, hooking up with his brother guaranteed her a spot in Stefan’s bed, but the others … well, it seemed like in his absence Stefan had taken to running the place as a home for waifs and strays. Another doppelganger, one who seemed to have turned up in Mystic Falls a thousand years after she’d died there without any explanation, a teenaged vampire who seemed set to follow the patented Stefan Salvatore bambi diet, guaranteed to put a stop to any Ripper like antics. There’d been a warning too, ominously delivered from one of Tatia’s old friends. Whatever he’d heard was coming was very much on its way and it had an eye on both Elena and Tatia.
Blue eyes swept the street now, narrowing at every unfamiliar face. They’d all merged together into a blur before, only those he found interesting or wanting to use throwing themselves into sharp detail. Now they were all leaping out at him, the threat possibly laying behind every single one ringing bells in the back of his mind. Running a hand over his jaw, huffing out a breath of frustration he made his way across the sidewalk and pushed his way into the Grill. If there was anywhere to bleed off some tension, anywhere that wouldn’t put that judgy little look of disappointment right in Stefan’s eye. It’d never bothered him before, in fact it had been more of a challenge than anything, but these days it’d begun to grate, stripping away skin and leaving just the raw sting of guilt behind instead. Scowling now, trying to push the thought from his mind, the guilt about kissing Elena, about taking off without a word, at actually feeling an ache at the thought of Katherine, he slipped between the tables. He’d been heading for the bar, for the blonde bartender who he hadn’t needed to threaten into keeping the bourbon coming yet, unlike some of her naïve compatriots. A familiar fall of dark hair, the clack of pool balls, the lazy thud of them finding their home in pockets … that familiar tug he’d felt when he’d seen the thousand-year old doppelganger in the Boarding House. Surely it wasn’t doppelganger week in Mystic Falls, that meant … Approaching the table, head tilted, the patented Damon Salvatore smirk in place, he helped himself to a cue, tapped the end of it against the floor at the head of the table to draw her attention. ”Of all the bars in all the town she had to walk into mine … a century too late. Someone finally give you a map Little Miss Make Believe?” A hundred years after they’d saved each other’s asses, after they were supposed to have a little reunion, one that he’d skipped out on as well, Claire Devereux had made a reappearance. The timing couldn’t have smelt fishier.

Being back in Mystic Falls was strange, the first time Claire had been there was when she and her family had spent about a week in the town as a holiday one summer while she left her address at the post office so that Damon and Stefan would know where to find her when the time came for their reunion and since then she had only been back once before when she had been in need of a daylight ring. Now she was back in the town once more looking to put down roots for the first time in years. Ever since she became a vampire she had moved around a lot, never staying in one place for too long and never giving herself the chance to get too attached to people. It was a lonely life but she had known from the moment that she left her family that that was just the way that it had to be. She had gone back to check on her family now and then and had watched them from a distance but for the most part she had stayed away. She knew that her husband and children had lived long and happy lives after she left and they had even started families of their own so she knew that chances were she still had family out there somewhere in the world but it had been a while since she had last tried to track them down. Instead she had found herself clinging to the memories of the people that she had loved and lost and it had been in an attempt to feel closer to them that she had returned to Mystic Falls in the first place. She had heard rumours about the town attracting a lot of members of the supernatural world to it but she had wanted to see that for herself and find out whether it would be possible for her to finally start over again. Of all the places she could have headed to that day it was the Mystic Grill that had caught her attention. Claire wanted to get more of a feel for the town and she knew that the best way to do that was to throw herself into a popular place in the town. In a way it took her back to working in the pubs London during her days as a human but she knew that so much had changed since then. She had visited the Falls already so she knew that some things about the town had stayed the same even though over a hundred years had passed since her last visit for the most part she knew that it was going to take some time to get used to the way things were now. She had learned to adapt pretty quickly over the years, though, so she knew that it shouldn’t be too difficult. Playing pool was something that she was good at and it wasn’t long after she took her first shot that someone tapped the table with the tip of the other cue. Looking up from the table she felt a half smile touch her lips as she realised who it was. “Little Miss Make Believe? Anyone would think you weren’t pleased to see me,” she laughed as she set the end of the cue down on the floor next to her. “So did you return for our meeting, Jack?” she teased as she looked over at him. The last time she had seen Damon he had been framed for the Jack the Ripper murders and she had helped him get out of trouble so she couldn’t deny that she was curious as to whether he had tried to meet up with her like they had agreed. Carrying a torch for a woman for a hundred and fifty years had made him a sap but it sure as hell hadn’t made him a saint. If he wanted to make a list of all the bad things he’d done over the years, the wine, the women, the blood, the violence, it probably would’ve stretched from here to London and back. A journey he’d in fact made not all that long after Stefan had forced him to transition. A little fun in the town, as he’d had everywhere else up until that point, as he’d carry on having afterwards, despite Stefan’s disapproval, and he’d drawn heat down on himself. Playing the hero again, wasn’t that a pattern, put on the white hat, get his ass kicked and on occasion, his heart broken. By the time his brother and the woman who’d just shown her face again after more than a century, had saved his ass things were really going down the pan. A ripper sister, wouldn’t that have bene the perfect match for his ripper brother, a little sororicide and then once all their asses were safe, a promise to meet again in 25 years. Well, Liar Liar Pants on Fire, Claire hadn’t shown and, Damon thought with just a trace of rue, he hadn’t either. Given that he was the Salvatore black sheep that really shouldn’t have been a surprise to anybody but Claire, now she’d been close to Stefan, close enough that it’d probably stung his brother’s tender heart.
Meeting her eye as she looked up at him from the table Damon wondered whether or not Stefan knew she was back. He certainly hadn’t mentioned it but then again, there were plenty of other things on his mind right now. Propping the cue on its end, leaning on it, Damon gave a shrug at her questioning of the nickname. ”Anyone wouldn’t know an affectionate nickname if they heard It,” he retorted sweetly. His mouth tugged into a smile at her laughter though. He and Claire had never exactly seen eye to eye, not the way she had with Stefan. The two of them had been almost as close as he and Lexi at the time, before Claire had pulled her little disappearing act. ”I’d be a little late if that was what I was doing here. News flash…” Damon dropped his voice and eyed the brunette from across the table, knowing she’d catch even the whisper, “…you’re about a hundred years too late for that.” It wasn’t like he'd spent much time in Mystic Falls in that century, just coming back often enough to disturb his brother’s attempts at a happy life here. That was, until now, when he’d come back to town, tail metaphorically between his legs. ”Is this just an ‘I’m passing through, figured I’d see whether my best bud was in town’ kinda visit or are actually planning on sticking around long enough to soothe Stefan’s broken heart. You did that to him you know.” Rounding the table, Damon lifted the cue, tapped it against the rail to indicate it was Claire’s shot again. Wasn’t much point in wasting a decent break.

Growing up Claire had had friends around her but the one person she had always been able to count on was her younger sister Violet. The two of them had always been close while they were growing up and that hadn’t changed even after their mother died and their father got remarried and had more children. For over a hundred years Claire had been on her own, left to live with the guilt that she had taken her own sister’s life, and that was something that she knew she should have gotten used to by now but she would be lying if she said that there weren’t still times when she found herself missing having her sister around. She knew that it had been for the best, she had saved Stefan’s life and in doing so she had saved her sister from living a life as a Ripper even though it had meant sentencing herself to a life alone. She had thought about reaching out to the Salvatore brothers after she became a vampire but they had known that it wasn’t something that she had ever wanted for herself and the truth was that she was ashamed that it had happened. Lord Ainsley had forced her to complete the transition and since doing so his was the only life that she had ever taken. She had hated him but she still carried that guilt with her now and she knew that she always would. Meeting Stefan and Damon had shown her that even though something bad had happened she didn’t have to be a monster and that was something that she had done her best to stick to. Being back in Mystic Falls now was strange, she had been there a couple of times before both when she had stopped by the Post Office to leave her current address in Philadelphia so that Damon and Stefan would know where she and her family were living if they did decide to meet her like they had planned and again when she had needed a daylight ring. She hadn’t planned on going back but her curiosity had ended up getting the better of her and as she looked over at Damon now a part of her was glad that it had although she was still a little unsure what he would think about what she had become. “I’ve missed you too Damon,” she grinned. The two of them kept each other on their toes, that was for sure, but she couldn’t deny that she had a soft spot for him so it was good to see him again. “I know, I remember,” she nodded. She had thought about going but after everything that had happened she hadn’t been able to bring herself to do so. As he said she broke Stefan’s heart she rolled her eyes playfully. “I’m sure he was fine. I take it you didn’t make the trip to Philadelphia for our meeting either?” she asked, an eyebrow raised as she looked over at him. She had never updated her address after that so if he had then he would have met her family and she couldn’t deny that she was curious as to how they had been. Picking up her cue she took another shot, sinking another ball before turning back to Damon. “And to answer your question I’ll be in town for a while, I’ve heard a lot about it so I’m thinking of putting down roots for a while. Is Stefan here too?” she asked, missing her third shot before stepping back so that Damon could go. DAMON SALVATORE

Soft spots were a weakness. That was a lesson Giuseppe had tried to teach his wife and sons the violent way. Men were not to be weak, tears were not to be shed even when their mother had died. Men were supposed to enlist for causes they didn’t believe in and go and die on some battlefield. There’d been times when he’d suspected Giuseppe would’ve preferred he’d done that. Better a martyr son than a yellow bellied disappointment. Even then he’d been the black sheep of the Salvatore family, the one guaranteed never to make his father proud. That role had stuck with him even after Stefan had killed Giuseppe and pushed him to complete the transition he’d never wanted. In London he’d been the one framed for the Ripper murders and if it hadn’t been for his brother’s tender little heart and Claire’s willingness to take her own sister’s life, he might’ve paid for probably the one crime he’d been accused of that he hadn’t perpetrated. For that alone Damon knew he should’ve gone to the little rendezvous but he’d never been one for sentimentality, or at least not admitting to it. Stefan could be the good guy, at least when he was on his Bambi diet, he could go and make nice with Claire and Damon was willing to live up to his reputation. Only problem was, these days his reputation had been tarnished, not in the same way Ripper episodes tarnished his brother’s, but in the fact that he was proving at times, to be a semi-decent guy, with a heart soft enough to be trampled all over by Katherine Pierce’s deadly spiked heels.
Denial would’ve been the wiser course here but as Claire grinned at him Damon couldn’t muster the effort to take a shot at her. He forced his smile to border on a smirk as blue eyes cut sideways to her. It had always been like this between them, the word play, the snark, the downright bitchy at times, at least on his part. That, in his opinion, was true affection. Dark brows rose as he drummed his fingers against the cue held lightly in his hands, almost daring for an explanation of why she was so late. Honestly, for all he knew Claire had been back here a dozen times between their original planned reunion and now. Wasn’t like he’d stayed put, Stefan hadn’t either. To have done that would’ve been to draw the Founder’s Council right down on those two such young looking Salvatore boys. Clucking his tongue at Claire’s eye roll, Damon shook his head. ”You’re underestimating him. It was heart-breaking honestly, all tears and snot. He’s a messy crier and…” Trailing off, Damon left the rest of his explanation unsaid for the moment. Settling a hand on his chest as Claire moved to take another shot, pouting for just a split second. ”Do you think I would’ve honestly missed out on seeing the woman who saved my ass again?” he asked. The answer was yes. That made him a dick, he was ready to admit. No one expected any better of him and truth was it took too much energy to prove people wrong, what was going on in town lately was proof of that. Rounding the table as Claire missed, Damon studied the balls before taking a shot that cannoned a ball into a corner pocket. ”We’re both here. I thought that was why you’d turned up. Lots are heading here suddenly wanting to put down roots.” Or to decimate the town. The fact that the Mikaelsons were back, along with another doppelganger was a red flag to him.

Claire’s world had always been fairly small while she was growing up, for the most part it had just been her, her dad and Violet after her mother died and while she’d had a few friends of her own the truth was that she had always been content with it being the three of them. She hadn’t wanted to embrace change to begin with when her dad had brought up the idea of getting married again but having seen him alone for so long Claire had realised that all she had wanted was for him to be happy. Her family had grown again after that as more children were born but she and Violet hadn’t stayed long enough to see them grow up. She knew that perhaps things would have worked out differently had they stayed in Ireland rather than moving to London to pursue their dreams, she might have still had her sister by her side, but no amount of wishing could change what had happened. The guilt of taking her sister’s life had proved too much for Claire even though she knew that she had done the right thing by saving Stefan’s life and saving her sister from a fate that she never would have wanted and she had found herself unable to return home when all was said and done. Instead she had boarded a boat to America and she had never looked back. She had eventually found happiness and had settled down and started a family of her own but even that had been short lived. For over a hundred years she had lived her life as a vampire and for the most part she had been on her own. She knew that she could have sought out the Salvatores before now and in fact meeting Damon now had been a mere coincidence, but the truth was that she had felt ashamed of what she had become and deep down a part of her still felt that way even now. It wasn’t something that she ever would have chosen but she had at least learned to live with it and now he hoped that for the first time in years she might just be able to put down roots once more. “Ah, the patented Damon smirk. I was wondering when I would see that again,” Claire said, her own smile playful as she looked over at Damon. She hadn’t liked him at all to begin with, she knew that he had been making life difficult for Stefan and he had often had a way of getting on her nerves but he had helped save her life and she knew that she still owed him for that now. She hadn’t meant anything to Damon, she wouldn’t have been surprised if she had just been another worthless human in his eyes but she hadn’t liked the idea of him being framed for crimes that he hadn’t committed so she had done everything she could to clear him of that and in doing so a friendship of sorts had started to build between them. They had still ended up winding each other up at times but the banter had turned more playful and teasing than anything else and if she was honest she’d missed having that with someone. “It’s nice to see you haven’t changed a bit,” she laughed. She knew that Stefan would have been disappointed that she hadn’t made their meeting but she just hadn’t felt like she could after everything that had happened and she hoped that when she explained that to him then he would understand. Damon at least didn’t seem bothered about how she was still alive over a hundred years since they had last seen each other but she knew better than to take it personally. “Yes I do but I’ll let you make it up to me now by buying me a drink,” she teased, draining the contents of her glass before setting it down on the side of the pool table. She knew that Damon would have had his reasons just like she had but that didn’t mean that she was about to let him off lightly. Watching as he took his shot Claire couldn’t deny that she was impressed but as he said that he thought the two of them being in town was what had drawn her to it she shook her head. “A happy coincidence I’m afraid, I had no idea what either of you were up to,” she admitted. “It seems I’m here for the same reason as most people, it has been a while since I had somewhere to call home,” she added with a shrug. “How about you, what are you doing back here?”DAMON SALVATORE

There were plenty of people in this world who’d not seen him for who he really was and Damon had played on that in the last hundred and fifty years. Giuseppe had ideas about his son that didn’t have an ounce of truth to them. A fickle, useless, cowardly son who’d supposedly been suckered in by the vampire living in his house. It had all been willing, most of what he’d done since had been too. He’d willingly waited around a century and a half for Katherine, had willingly made his brother’s life a misery and had probably willingly saved it a half dozen times since he’d come back to town too. When he’d been younger he would’ve done anything for Stefan, just as he knew Claire would’ve done anything for Violet. Damon wasn’t sure whether he would’ve been able to kill Stefan to save someone else’s life though. Selfish he might’ve been and he might’ve sworn to make Stefan’s like a misery too but at the end of the day, even when Stefan had been slaughtering his way through California, he hadn’t been able to bring himself to tear his brother’s heart out. Maybe that weight on his conscience had been the reason why he hadn’t kept their little appointment. Even that far back his conscience had grated on his nerves than he might’ve cared to admit. It had been easy to cover up though, easy to lead people to believe that the eternal stud didn’t give a damn about anybody’s opinion. He’d killed Zach, had turned Vicki, had compelled Caroline to do whatever he’d wanted and on the surface he’d been nothing but proud. Truth was, as it always was, a different story.
That truth was the reason he was home, to play the hero, to maybe prove that his dad had been wrong about him. Giuseppe would’ve been rolling in his grave to see what his sons had become, to see them back in his town again, his black sheep of a son on the town council. For now at least the devil may care Damon was back, smirking at Claire as she smiled at him. ”Oh honey, it’s never gone for long,” he promised, although lately it’d given way to a scowl more often than not. It usually didn’t take Claire long to drag one out of him though. Cocking his head, Damon aimed that smirk at her again. ”Looks like I’m not the only who hasn’t changed.” Maybe she had though, he thought, watching her drain her glass. He would’ve bet dollars to doughnuts that she’d have made their little rendezvous. Claire hadn’t though and it’d taken her a hundred years to come crawling back in to town, or swaggering, he thought as she teased. Dark brows rose as he tapped his fingertips against the black t-shirt he wore. ”Make it up to you?” he asked seriously before letting out a chuckle. ”Now if I wasn’t such a generous guy I might have turned that around and said you should be the one plying me with bourbon Fast Eddie.” Gentleman that he was though Damon turned towards the bar, caught a familiar blonde’s eye and lifted two fingers. There was a nod from the woman and Damon turned back, smiling sweetly as he went to take his shot. ”Seems like there’s a lot of those these days,” he drawled, straightening up and rounding the table to take his next shot. He studied the table, then nudged her aside with a hip to get the space he wanted to bend over for the shot. ”I’d say the same but that’d be a big fat pants on fire lie. I’m watching Stefan’s back.” And Elena’s and now Tatia’s too. He would’ve aided Katherine to the list given that she seemed to be on the Mikaelson hit list but he still wasn’t over her enough for that.

Claire had originally made her way to Mystic Falls to see if she could settle down and stay in one place for the first time in years but she couldn’t deny that she’d had her doubts at first. She had heard a lot about the town during her travels and she had heard that there were some vampires that had tried making the town their home but from what she could gather those same vampires had been killed by the founding families. Moving there was a risk but it was one that she had known that she had to at least try and take. She had moved around so much since becoming a vampire and she had shared her time between studying at various different schools and working different jobs and she had found herself enjoying some of those things but the end result had always been the same, she had been on her own. Deep down a part of her knew that what she was really looking for was companionship and it was starting to look like she had already found that in Mystic Falls. She had made a few friends along the way with one of them being someone she had ended up going through the police training academy with but she hadn’t seen or heard from Daniel for a long time so she knew that the chances of seeing him again were probably pretty slim. Damon was someone that she hadn’t seen since she had boarded the boat from London that had carried her to America so that she could start the next chapter of her life rather than having to return home alone and face her family in the knowledge that she had taken her own sister’s life and it seemed like he really hadn’t changed a bit. As Damon said that it looked like he wasn’t the only one who hadn’t changed, Claire averted her gaze. “I wouldn’t go that far,” she admitted quietly. In the years since they had last seen each other she had become the one thing that she had never wanted to be but she knew that she could at least take solace in the fact that other than when she completed the transition she had been pretty good at staying away from fresh human blood. She had taken a leaf out of Stefan’s book and taken to drinking only animal blood or from a blood bag and she knew that it was the right thing for her. She didn’t trust herself to drink from humans in case she lost control the same way that Violet had and the truth was that after being used as a human blood bag herself she knew that she wouldn’t want to put anyone else through that either. She had been firmly under Henry’s spell from the moment she met him and she knew that she couldn’t do that to anyone else. She had felt so ashamed and so used when she had learned what he had done to her and she knew that it just wasn’t worth it. It was only when Damon spoke again that she snapped out of her thoughts and she felt her smile return. “If I remember correctly you never needed plying with anything,” she teased. Damon was more than capable of doing that all on his own but this time she was more than happy to match him drink for drink. She knew that if she really was going to stick around then sooner or later she would need to find herself a job to keep her busy but for the time being she was more than happy just catching up with an old friend. As he nudged her aside with his hip she rolled her eyes and nudged him back playfully in return just as he went to line up his shot before shooting him an innocent smile. As he said that he was in town watching Stefan’s back her expression instantly turned to one of concern. “Why, what’s going on?” she asked, knowing that if either of them were in trouble then she would do what she could in order to help. Once upon a time Damon Salvatore had been gullible. Trying to make his father proud, for the first time in his life, he’d gone off to fight a war he hadn’t believed in. That naïve young man had been encouraged then to follow his own trail, to abandon the men he’d marched with and head home. It had been the first wise thing he’d done in his short life but that hadn’t been where the naivety had ended, no, that had happened on the night he’d first seen Katherine feed. From then on out his eyes had been wide open as he’d gone in to things. It hadn’t meant he was always aware of where the traps lay but it did mean he knew enough to be suspicious when a face from the past managed to show up just when danger was about to come knocking on the door again. Now, Claire being here wasn’t as big a shock as say, a thousand year old dead doppelganger apparently coming back to life and being found on the road outside town by the Original vampire who’d loved and killed her all those years back, but it had set those little alarm bells ringing in his head when he’d seen her bent over the pool table, cue in hand, looking like she’d been here in town all along. She hadn’t been though, when Claire Devereux had taken her leave of him and Stefan he’d been certain that would be the last he’d see of her, she’d ride off in to the sunset and wouldn’t take a single glance back at them. Her not turning up to meet Stefan had only been proof of that. She’d let that special little friendship with his brother slip away for a hundred years, so why was she back here now? Who’d turned her, who’d taken away the human life she should’ve been able to live after she’d left.
The question was one Damon was sure he was going to be able to get her to answer. At one time he’d been able to badger most things out of her, butting heads with her until Stefan the referee had to step in. Stefan wasn’t here this time though, there was no one at all to temper the words sparking between the two of them. Seeing the way she’d reacted to his comment, her gaze skittering away, Damon raised a dark brow. ”Maybe you’re right,” he drawled softly. ”Although you’re still as coy as ever.” Coy, secretive, suspicious, however you wanted to put it. His eyes stayed on her while she remained quiet, sliding from the side of her face, to the expressive, clever mouth, down the slim body that suited the twentieth century and back up again. She didn’t seem to retreat from her thoughts until he opened his mouth again and wrung a teasing comment out of her. Mock gasping, Damon spread his tapping fingers over his heart as though shocked by her words. ”If I didn’t know better I’d think you were calling me easy,” he said guilelessly, batting long lashes at her. These days he probably would’ve been considered to be, that naïve young man from a hundred and fifty years ago far more world weary and prepared to take what he wanted. ”I’ve taken a leaf out of Stefan’s book, I’m trying to be play a little harder to get.” That didn’t stop him from looking over his shoulder at her as he bent to take his shot though, coquettish up until the moment he rounded the table to nudge her out the way of his next shot. ”The usual for the Salvatore boys,” he murmured, meeting the innocent smile with narrowed blue eyes. ”A little trouble in town. I thought that might’ve been what brought you here. We’ve got all sorts turning up.” Christ, he thought as he took his shot and missed the pocket by a half inch, he hoped this wasn’t a repeat of London. Last thing he wanted was to have to be rescued again.

There were certain things in her past that Claire often tried to think about as little as possible but seeing Damon again was enough to bring all of those old memories back to the surface. To this day she still lived with the guilt of what she had done to her sister Violet and she knew that no matter how much time passed she would never be able to forgive herself for what she had done. She knew that it had been for the right reasons, had she not stopped Violet then her sister would have killed Stefan and the person that Violet had become after becoming a vampire was so far from the real Violet that in a way it had been like finally letting her soul rest in peace but that didn’t mean that she didn’t still miss her. The two of them had always been close and even though she knew that things were complicated between Damon and Stefan and had been for quite some time she would be lying if she said she didn’t still envy the fact that through everything they still had each other. She knew some about what had happened to fracture their relationship, Stefan had filled her in on that much at least, but they were both in Mystic Falls now and Damon seemed to be as protective of his little brother as ever so she hoped that perhaps things were finally on the mend for the two of them. Claire had spent such a long time avoiding the brothers and hoping that they wouldn’t find out what she had become, too ashamed that Lord Ainsley had ended up getting the better of her to actually reach out for help to the two people who would have no doubt given it to her without a second thought, but being with Damon now it was actually starting to feel like perhaps she had found her place in the world once more after all. The brothers had always had that effect on her, when things were looking hopeless they had found a way to change her view on things and she knew that she had made the right decision to check out what all of the fuss was about in Mystic Falls. As Damon said that she was still as coy as ever she felt a smile touch her lips. “You know me, I like to keep you guessing,” she grinned as she took a sip of her drink. There was a lot that Damon didn’t know and she knew that she would fill him in soon enough but not just yet, for now she was enjoying herself being able to mess around and tease him and she knew that the last thing she wanted at the moment was to end up ruining that with the look of pity he was sure to give her when she told him what had happened. As he spoke again she simply shrugged. “If the shoe fits,” she teased, knowing that even back when they first met that was something that Damon probably would have classed himself as. “Is that so? How is that working out for you?” she asked. Given what she knew about Damon she had a feeling that he was probably out of practice when it came to playing hard to get so she couldn’t deny that she was curious. He had never been the kind of person to really hold back but perhaps he was trying to change. As he said there was trouble in town before saying he thought that was why she had shown up she shook her head. “It isn’t but now that I’m here I’ll do what I can to help. If I recall I was pretty good at saving both of you last time,” she said, nudging his arm playfully before lining up to take her shot. She had been a naive human back then but now she had seen and experienced so much so she knew that she wasn’t going to let them go it alone. “What kind of trouble are you dealing with?”DAMON SALVATORE

The ground was never steady for long for poor Damon Salvatore. When he’d been a child things had seemed certain – his brother would grow up to inherit Giuseppe’s throne, his father would keep beating him and he would forever remain a disappointment to the man. Then his mother had died. From then on in every time it had felt as though he was certain on which direction things were going, on which direction he was going, something would cause the earth to shake and that neatly laid out path was suddenly jumbled, his destination now further away than ever or in some cases entirely gone. It had been that way in London when he and Stefan had met the Devereux sisters. A few days of fun and they would be on their way once more but it hadn’t been the case, the ground had shook, he’d ended up kidnapped by the vengeful brother of a vampire they’d killed to free Claire’s little sister. The only way to stop Violet from killing his little brother once he’d been freed had been for Claire to kill her. His ground hadn’t been the only one shaken that day but from the looks of things, his was the one that had shook with alarming regularity since, most recently when Katherine had finally scorched the ground their relationship, as ridiculous as the word was for what had happened between the two of them, had stood on. All those years of struggle and torment and death and for what? A broken heart and a need to save Elena?
And maybe for this little reunion. Coming as it had in the middle of the hunt for Niklaus Mikaelson Damon hadn’t entirely trusted Claire’s motives when he’d approached her at the table. Even now, he was teetering on that knife edge of whether or not to believe what came from her mouth, especially when she was aiming that smile his way and telling him in no uncertain words she liked to keep him guessing. Damon made a half amused sound low in his throat as he aimed narrowed blue eyes at her. ”Oh I know you all too well,” Damon crooned right back. Which was why he knew better than to head into this with his eyes closed. Those months in London had been burned pretty well into his brain, Violet’s last moments inscribed deeply on a conscience he swore hadn’t existed in over a century. It wasn’t his conscience that Claire was playing on now though but that well developed flirtatious streak that had charmed more women than he’d been able to count to his bed over the years, trying to fill a hole in his heart that was now gaping open more than it had ever done. Damon pretend to give her retort some consideration before he gave in with a shrug. ”Just call me Cinderella,” he murmured sweetly. He wasn’t about to argue, despite the fact that he’d held a torch for Katherine for the last century and a half.
Snorting, Damon turned his attention back to the table as he took his shot. ”Not half as well as it was meant to.” The admission still grated on that well hidden conscience. He wasn’t supposed to fall for his brother’s girl again but it had started happening anyway. Trying to stay clear hadn’t worked, not with the dark cloud of the Mikaelsons descending on Mystic Falls. Blue eyes shot up to Claire at her offer to help, the insistence that she stay out of it on the tip of his tongue but Damon bit it back. ”You were but I doubt you came to town looking to do it again,” he countered. Sighing heavily, Damon straightened up from his missed shot. He settled back against the edge of the table, his cue propped between his knees as he studied the brunette. ”The kind that makes Henry and Samuel look like little angels,” he drawled dryly. Watching from his perch beside her as she took her shot. ”You looking to try saving my ass again?” More than likely he’d end up having to save hers, just as he was trying to save Elena’s. Stefan’s concern was rubbing off on him and it was leaving him feeling … out of sorts.

When Claire had heard about other members of the supernatural world trying to make Mystic Falls their home she had soon found herself wondering whether she could do the same. She knew that she needed to be careful, with so many different creatures in town it would be too easy to alert the whole town to the fact that the monsters that went bump in the night were actually real and that was the last thing she wanted. She knew she wouldn’t have changed the friendships she had built with the Salvatore brothers for anything but life had been a lot simpler before she had learned the truth and once she had there hadn’t been any going back. She had left London and moved to America after Violet died and she had hoped that it would give her the chance to start over somewhere new and leave the past behind her once and for all but no matter how hard she tried she just couldn’t forget about everything that she had learned. For a while it had made her a little paranoid but she had slowly started finding her way out of that and she had found a way to be happy. Naturally it had only been a matter of time before her past had caught up with her and she was just glad that she had been able to kill Lord Ainsley before he had gone after her family. Taking lives wasn’t something that ever sat right with her but when it came to protecting her family there wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t have done so she had known that that was just the way it had had to be. The guilt she felt at having taken Violet’s life even though she had done it in order to save Stefan was something that she still carried with her even now and she knew better than to add more guilt to that. Finding out that Damon and Stefan were in town was definitely a nice surprise and as Damon said that he knew her too well, Claire’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment as she took a sip of her drink. “And I know you too well. Something is bothering you, what is it?” she asked as she set her drink down next to her once more. There was a lot that she hadn’t told Damon yet but if he asked then she knew that there was no way she was going to lie to him. There weren’t many people that she genuinely cared about but Damon fell into that category and she knew better than to lie to him. She rolled his eyes playfully as he told her to call him Cinderella before her expression softened as he spoke again. “That sounds like it has a story to it. What happened?” she asked, curious as to what had been going on with him since they had parted ways. She and Damon had always wound each other up but when it came down to it she cared about him and if he needed someone to talk to then she knew that she would be there. As he spoke again she simply shrugged. “It wasn’t the plan but I didn’t turn my back on you back in London and I’m not going to start doing it now,” she explained. When it came to the people she cared about that just wasn’t how she was wired, she couldn’t turn her back on any of them. As he spoke again her eyes widened. “That bad, huh?” she asked, unable to deny that now she really was intrigued. “Hopefully it won’t come to that but if I have to then I will,” she said, a half smile tugging at the corner of her mouth as she lined up her shot and took it, pocketing the ball with ease. “Who are you going up against this time?” she asked as she lined up another shot. Trust was Stefan’s thing, letting every little thing that was bothering him pour out onto paper, brooding and thinking and being a decent guy, that was Stefan’s thing. Ask anybody in town who knew him and Damon’s thing was antagonism, self-centredness, selfishness, sarcasm and the sort of attitude that left everybody believing that nothing bothered him. It all ran off of Damon’s feckless back like water from a duck’s. They couldn’t have been more wrong, Stefan knew it, Claire too. They’d both seen him at his worst and had given enough of a damn to see past that thin brittle veneer that had kept people from seeing what lay beneath. That hidden underbelly was soft, still raw and hurting from Katherine’s betrayal. It had been holding the reins of his mind and his heart for far too long now. Damon didn’t like it, didn’t like the feeling of weakness that came with knowing he’d allowed himself to pine for a woman for a hundred and fifty years who didn’t give a damn. Katherine had strolled out of that tomb while Giuseppe’s blood was still wet on the rug in his study, had walked away and left him behind, not giving a damn that she’d left Damon behind to rip his way through towns and villages, not giving a damn that he would’ve taken her back, protected her in a heartbeat. Tightening his grip on the cue Damon resisted the urge to track Katherine down and hand her over to Niklaus Mikaelson as some sort of offering for sparing Elena’s life. The noble brother was going to have to find a way all of his own for doing the same for Tatia. There was only so much Damon altruism to go around.
And only so thin his poker face could grow before people started realising something was up. Damon knew he hadn’t exactly been keeping it up. Stefan had known why he was out of town, like his brother Claire could read him all too well. The amusement was wiped away from his expression for a moment, leaving that vulnerability visible until he forced the grin back. ”Telling you that would take far too long,” he said dryly. ”Maybe we should start with you instead.” Like why Claire had shown up here now and why the hell she wasn’t in some family plot somewhere already. Damon smiled broadly, the typical arrogance returning to it as he shrugged. ”Let’s just say I fell for the wrong girl … more than once. I’ve got a type and it’s not a healthy one.” Not when his brother had the same type. He’d stolen Katherine away from Stefan once, or at least believed he had, and it had almost happened again with Elena when Katherine had twisted it all up again. The player had been played. Damon was determined it wasn’t going to happen again, not with a woman and not with what was going on in town now. Blue eyes cut to Claire as she shrugged, searching her face for some sign of deception as she near promised not to screw him over here. Damon tapped the end of his cue against the floor as he watched her line up her next shot. ”Bad enough that I’ll admit to being glad we’ve got someone else on our side.” He didn’t like dragging others into this, dragging Claire into it given their past, but Damon knew he had to if they wanted to stop the Originals. ”You ever heard of the Original family?” he asked as he rose from the edge of the table to follow Claire around it. ”The first of our kind. They’re heading to town, looks like they’re stirring up trouble, messing with some people who’ve come to mean a lot to Stefan.” To him. Looking to disguise the supernatural element of things he’d just emphasised his words but as he settled right beside Claire, close enough to eye the line of her hip as she bent to take the shot, Damon knew that she’d understand exactly what he meant.

Even though Claire hadn’t been in Mystic Falls for long she couldn’t deny that it still felt strange being back there. The last time she had visited was with her family and it had only been a short visit but this time she was looking to put down roots. She had known that it would be difficult going back to some of the places she had once gone to with her husband and children but at the end of the day the town was one where vampires were trying to live out their lives in peace from what she had heard and that was what she wanted more than anything. It had been a while since she had last stayed somewhere for a decent amount of time but she had already made up her mind that she was going to give life in Mystic Falls a go and knowing that Damon and Stefan were both there as well was a huge bonus. While it was true that she had been reluctant about letting them find out what had happened to her to begin with, seeing Damon again was enough to make her realise just how much she had missed them so she knew that it was time to face up to what had happened to her and own it rather than trying to hide from it. She hadn’t asked to become a vampire, nor had she wanted it, but it was the turn her life had taken and she knew that nothing could change that so it was just one of those things. The Salvatore brothers had come to mean a lot to her during the time she had spent with them in London so it was good to know that she was among friends once more. Studying Damon carefully for a moment, Claire lifted her glass to her lips and took a sip of her drink. “You know I’m going to get answers to all of these questions out of you sooner or later, right?” she asked as she looked over at him. “You’re avoiding them at the moment but you can’t do that forever,” she added. Damon had always been good at keeping things to himself when he wanted to but it seemed he was being especially coy now although she supposed that since she wasn’t going anywhere she had time to drag the answers out of him. When she had known him all those years ago he had never really been one to talk about his problems too much but she knew what happened when Damon bottled things up and it wasn’t pretty so if there was anything she could do to help him she knew she would. “As for me, you can ask me anything. I’m an open book,” she shrugged. She hadn’t lied to him back in London and she didn’t plan on starting now. She hadn’t been ready to admit what had happened to Damon before but the more time she was spending with him the more she was starting to slip into their old routine and she couldn’t deny that it was comforting so she knew that if he did have questions then she would answer them as best she could. It was as Claire lined up her next shot that Damon said that things were bad enough that he would admit to being glad that they had someone else on their side and her eyes widened in surprise. “That bad, huh?” she asked, an eyebrow raised as she looked over at him before taking her shot and sinking the ball into the corner pocket. As he spoke again, she nodded in understanding. “I’ve heard rumours but nothing concrete. Have you been able to find out much about them or what they want?” she asked, knowing that it would be good to know exactly what they were up against beforehand if they could. “Something tells me they aren’t just people who mean a lot to Stefan, I think they do to you as well,” she admitted as she took another sip of her drink. “You wouldn’t be this worried if they were people you didn’t care about.” Even back when she had known him Damon had been good at pretending that he didn’t care but that was all it had ever been - a pretence. She knew that he had cared about her back then and she wouldn’t be surprised at all if Damon now had people in town he cared about as well. DAMON SALVATORE
