They always wanted to crack his supposedly rock solid head open in the end. No matter how many times he’d pushed his brother and the bleeding hearts Stefan insisted on surrounding himself with away they always came back, always tried to find something redeemable within him. Damon knew that there was something there beneath that laissez faire shell but from the moment his mother had died he hadn’t been too keen on letting anybody look at what was there. Maybe that had been the appeal in Katherine, finally there was someone who didn’t care about that, didn’t care about whether or not he was still grieving or whether he had what it took to go out and throw away his life in a war he didn’t give a damn about. Like Stefan Claire had continued to care, no matter how many shields he’d thrown up between them or how many barbed comments had been tossed in her direction. There hadn’t been as many as he’d thrown at Lexi, but then again the two women couldn’t have been any more different in their approaches. Lexi had always been the meddling sort, aiming to turn around Stefan’s black sheep brother, trying to find some way to redeem him or at least a way to stop him from making Stefan’s life the misery he’d promised when his brother had bent his arm to get him to turn. Claire was … insidious, slipping up on you before you realised just how far she’d gotten under your skin. Once she was there it was all iron and steel beneath that delicate exterior, the sort of fight he hadn’t expected she was capable of when they’d first crossed paths.
Eyeing her now as she spoke honestly, Damon could see that steel shining in those dark eyes. It was going to be as inevitable as the sun rising in the sky and just as painful for him if he wasn’t careful. ”You’re welcome to try,” Damon crooned. His mouth was slanted at the corners, a veneer of ‘don’t give a damn’ written over his features but it was just a mask. ”I’m the King of avoidance, I thought that would’ve been obvious by now.” And he had over a century of practice. There were still things packed in the dark corners of his mind that he refused to take out and examine and his feelings for Katherine and Elena were stuffed in one now. Blue eyes narrowed as he was giving the opening to wrestle every answer he wanted from her without a fight. ”Why here, why now?” he asked, leaving out the very big, very obvious, ‘when were you turned’. That was going to be the elephant sitting in the room until he had her out of here and in private. Continuing to tap his cue against the floor, Damon laughed almost mirthlessly. ”That bad,” he confirmed. ”You picked the wrong time to come pay a visit Bambi.” She’d always had those long legs, those big dark eyes that reminded her of a deer. They were wide now, one dark brow winged as she took her shot. Letting out a low noise, Damon continued to study the line of her hip, her waist. ”Other than them wanting to…” Damon clucked his tongue, drawing a finger across his throat in explanation, ”…Stefan’s current a’more to pull off some ancient trick, nope.” Standing up as she straightened up to take a sip of her drink, Damon moved in, crowding her faintly. ”I guess being new in Mystic Falls means you haven’t heard the rumours that I’m incapable of worrying about anyone but myself. Just call me the Tin Man.” Damon’s eyes remained on Claire’s face as he reached out to take her glass from her fingers. Even the Tin Man was given a heart in the end, it might’ve ended up in a rusty old chest but it beat there all the same. Tilting the glass, Damon drained the remains of its contents, holding it out to the approaching waiter bringing the two he’d ordered.

Over the last few decades Claire had found herself wondering just how different things might have been if she had reached out to the Salvatore brothers sooner. When she left London she hadn’t planned on Lord Ainsley finding her eventually nor had she ever thought that she would become a vampire. After seeing what had happened to Violet when she was turned she had made herself a promise that she was never going to let that happen to her. Stefan and Damon were both proof that it was possible to become a vampire and still be a good person underneath it all but she had always imagined herself settling down and starting a family, both of which were things that she had managed to do while she was in America, but she had also thought that she would be there to see her children grow up. She had stayed with them for as long as she could and had hidden what she was from the three of them but at the end of the day she had always known that she wouldn’t be able to stay with them forever. It had only been a matter of time before people had started to realise that she was different and in the end she’d had no choice but to compel them into believing that she had died and make them start over somewhere new without her. It was without a doubt the hardest thing that she’d ever had to do but she had known that it was for the best. More than anything she had wanted the three of them to be happy and she had checked in on them from a distance in the years that had followed but for the most part her life had been a pretty lonely one since then. She knew that she could have tracked down Damon and Stefan before but she had been too ashamed. Instead she had made do with the few friends she had made during her travels but for the most part she had kept to herself and she knew that it would probably end up staying that way. “Maybe so but I’m up for the challenge, I’ll get those answers out of you one way or another,” Claire said confidently as she lifted her glass to her lips and took another sip. She knew that she would get the truth out of Damon sooner or later, either that or she would talk to Stefan and get him to give her as much information as he could so that she could use that to pry the rest out of his brother, but one way or another she knew that she was going to get to the bottom of what was going on whether Damon liked it or not. Giving Damon an opening to ask her anything was dangerous but Claire knew that if she was going to stand a chance at getting Damon to be honest with her then she needed to be honest with him in return. “I’ve grown tired of moving around all the time and living my life on my own. I heard that Mystic Falls is a place where there are people like us and I decided it was time to put down some roots. I was telling you the truth earlier, finding out that you and Stefan are both here is just a happy coincidence,” she explained. She had moved around more than she had really needed to but in a way it had been a good thing as it had made it easier to avoid getting too attached to people. This time she wanted things to be different, though, she was living her life without killing people and for the first time in years she wanted to enjoy the company of others so she hoped that Mystic Falls would be good for her. “I don’t know about that, sounds like I turned up just in time to save you both again,” she teased. Now that she was in town and she knew what was going on she knew that she wasn’t about to turn her back on the two of them when they needed her most. “How is Stefan doing?” she asked, knowing that it couldn’t be easy for him to having a threat like that hanging over the head of the girl he loved. As Damon spoke again, she couldn’t help but laugh. “I think you’ve forgotten that even though the Tin Man thought that he didn’t have a heart he eventually found out that he had one all along, he just needed Dorothy to make him realise it was there,” she said, rolling her eyes as he finished her drink just as two more arrived. “You know, if I didn’t know any better I’d think you were trying to get me drunk,” she said, taking the glass and setting it down next to her before lining up her next shot. Loose lips sank ships, especially in a town like Mystic Falls. More than most he’d attempted to loosen others’ in town since his first return and with compulsion and a little strong arming, he’d gotten some of the answers he’d needed. When it came to prying his own mouth open Damon had always prided himself on keeping it well shut. Everything was hidden beneath the mask he slipped on, appearances and first impressions enough to keep most from wanting to dig beneath. They wanted to see an asshole who was here just to cause trouble, a guy more concerned with his own whims than the safety of those around him. He could see it in there eyes, in the whine of their judgy little voices and on more than one occasion, hell yes, he’d played up to that. With Giuseppe, with Stefan, with Lexi on occasion, it had been worth it to avoid the look of sympathy that would’ve been a thousand times worse. He didn’t want to be poor little Damon, the sap who’d waited around over a century for a woman who’d been flaunting her freedom behind their backs the entire time, didn’t want to be the guy who was more likely to screw up his brother’s life permanently than help him put his ripper past behind him. It might’ve taken the full on asshole act to distract them but it worked, he could be the guy they all expected him to be and the rest … that he could pull apart and try to fix on his own time.
Only some weren’t prepared to let him do that. Claire had always seemed to see through the veneer he wore and wouldn’t let him get away with letting all that had happened fester inside of him. Distracting her was only going to get him so far before she drove him crazy enough to just open up and stop the questions. The smirk he wore tightened at the corners but didn’t fade entirely as he waved his hand, encouraging her to attempt it. The harder he fought, the harder she’d work at winkling those answers out of him. ”Like I said, bring it on Lillie Langtry.” Her confidence should’ve galled him but maybe there was a masochistic part of him that was waiting for someone to believe what he said. Damon tilted his head back and forth, blue eyes scrutinising. ”Sounds … convenient … or at least it wouldn’t have done if Mystic Falls didn’t seem to be on everyone’s lips right now. This isn’t the promised land though, might not be as safe as it seems, especially around me and Stefan.” Even without the Mikaelsons trouble seemed to have found them here repeatedly anyway. Damon made a dissatisfied voice low in his throat as he stilled his cue. ”Anybody ever tell you that you’ve got a hero complex? You and Stefan, both like saving asses.” And being selfless in a way he’d never been. Some would’ve said he was incapable of it but he had been a time or two. ”The Prodigal Son’s doing just fine,” Damon admitted. ”Lost his heart to a girl in town and he’s doing the High School thing again. I’ve never understood how four years of High School gym could ever make him happy but … it is.” Or rather Elena was making Stefan happy and him … unsettled. Lifting his hand between them, Damon rapped his knuckles against his chest. ”Feel free to try and find one in there Dorothy but both you and Toto are gonna fail this time around.” He wasn’t about to let anyone pry their way into his chest and discover that there was something in there capable of hurting. ”If I thought I had a hope of it happening I might’ve tried but I think we both know it’s not gonna work without adding a little … spice to these. It’s not like the old days.” Then he could watch the alcohol slowly filtering through her system, watching those bonds of self-control slip a little. Damon tilted his head back, sank half the contents of his fresh drink. He was prepared to find another way to get that control to slip now.

It had been a long time since Claire had last been in Mystic Falls and the truth was that she was curious to see just how much it had changed. There were different places around town that she had visited with her family and even though she knew that her husband and children would have already died of old age by now it was comforting to be able to hold on to those memories of her time with them. For such a long time she had been on her own and even though she had felt certain that that was just the way it had to be she couldn’t deny that it was a lonely way to live so she was actually glad that Damon and Stefan were both in town. It had taken her a while to come to terms with what she had become and ever since then she had been doing her best to live a good life, both by furthering her education and working in a job in which she could actually help people, but it wasn’t always easy. Never ageing meant that she had to move around a lot and truth be told it had been a long time since she had last stayed in one place for more than a few weeks at a time. Now she finally felt like she was ready to settle down once more and she was pretty sure that if anywhere was the place to do just that then it was Mystic Falls. She didn’t know what was going to happen while she was in town but she was looking forward to finding out. “You’ll open up soon enough. After everything we went through together I’m probably one of the people who knows you best,” she shrugged. While it was true that Damon might have changed some during that time from what she had seen so far he was still the same man she had known back then and she knew that she would find a way to get through to him. Even as a human she’d had her ways of getting under her skin and back then she had been able to offer an ear to listen while he was still struggling with Katherine’s death so she knew that in time she would find a way to get through to him again whether he wanted her to or not. “Since when has being around you ever been safe for me?” she teased. When they first met the brothers had saved her from a vampire that had been using her as his own personal blood bag and after that she had ended up saving both Damon and Stefan on occasion and she had even killed her own sister to protect the two of them so she wasn’t afraid of being around either of them because it wasn’t safe. “It never stopped me before,” she added. Now she at least had the added strength and speed that came with being a vampire so she knew that she would be able to continue to hold her own even better than she had done before. As Damon spoke again she couldn’t help but laugh. “What can I say, seeing the way the two of you were willing to die for each other even back then must have rubbed off on me,” she shrugged. Even when the two of them had been at odds the bond she had seen there between Stefan and Damon was similar to the one that she and Violet had shared. She would have done anything to protect her younger sister and she had done so in taking her life when Violet’s soul was shattered and she lost herself to her Ripper side and she knew that deep down Damon would always do the same. “You have a bit of a hero complex yourself at times you just like to try and hide it better,” she added, nudging his arm playfully as she took a sip of her drink. Damon had always tried to make out like he didn’t care what happened but she had seen glimmers of what lay beneath the armour he wore and she hoped that sooner or later that Damon would make another appearance. “I’m glad he has found someone and something that makes him happy,” she admitted as she set her glass back down. “How about you, have you found anything like that in town?” she asked, unable to deny that she was curious. Last time she had seen Damon he had still been struggling with Katherine’s death and she hoped that he had found a way to move on. “We’ll see,” she said carefully as he claimed that she would fail this time. She knew Damon well enough to know that he didn’t like anyone seeing how he was really feeling but she was determined to break through those walls. “It does take away the fun of it a little, doesn’t it?” she agreed. It took drinking a lot more to cause even a small buzz now although most of the time she knew that that was probably a good thing. DAMON SALVATORE

If the past had taught Damon one thing it was that keeping his mouth shut was always the wiser move. His problem was most of the time he literally couldn’t. One wrong word, one idiot move, one single ounce of frustration and any hold he had on his tongue was gone. It ticked people off, oh God he was aware of that, and more often than not it probably got him deeper into whatever jam he was in rather than freeing him from it but Damon knew he’d never be able to stop himself. Maybe it was some hold over from when he’d been too terrified of Giuseppe to open his mouth. Whatever it was, he rarely had an issue with clamming up and staying silent … except for when it came to matters of the heart. When things had started to develop with Katherine after he’d found her feeding on the estate he’d kept it quiet from Stefan, despite knowing that his little brother had fallen for the same girl. Right up until the moment he’d woken up to find out that his father’s shot hadn’t killed either of them, that he could choose to live eternally without Katheirne or die, he’d not uttered a word to Stefan about what was going on. He hadn’t changed since then. He didn’t want to pull out every agonising detail for Stefan to sympathise over, he didn’t want Elena or Caroline or even sharp tongued little BonBon to start feeling sorry for him. Despite their past and how close they’d been before Damon had no intention of letting Claire hear his sob story either.
It didn’t look like she was going to give him a choice though. She never did, always acting like she hadn’t heard the subtext to his words. Damon knew he’d be able to hold out longer than she would but he also knew that she’d eventually work it out of him. Blue eyes narrowing Damon fought to make the smirk soften. ”You do. And yet,” he said sweetly, letting his voice drift, ”you still think you’ll crack me open like an oyster.” It was the same old game they’d played last time, the vicious circle having swung around yet again, history repeating itself. Letting out a long breath, Damon shook his head. ”Never, which is why you should learn your lesson this time. Have your little vacation here and head out for greener pastures.” Only most who should’ve done that didn’t. They died here and while he might’ve pretended not to give a damn, he didn’t want Claire dying for him. Peeling a hand off of his cue Damon groaned and covered his face with it. ”Stefan, Stefan’s rubbed off on you. If I had you’d be heading for Maui now to sip mai-tais while me and Saint Stefan deal with our problems here.” It was what he should’ve been doing but he’d come back here instead. Damon was tempted to say he did hide it better but in doing so he’d only give some truth to Claire’s teasing words. He ignored it, nudging her back instead before he tried to distract Claire again. Smug Damon returned in an instant at her question, his grin broad as he gestured to the teenaged crowd around them. ”You mean other than my adoring fans? Give it an hour, they’ll all be at my feet, fluttering their lashes.” Caroline had done just that at first, until she’d learned better. Since Katherine had played him again there’d been no desire to have a second go around. Damon let his hand fall away from his chest, shaking his head at Claire. ”I don’t know,” Damon murmured, slowly moving towards Claire, glass still in his hand. ”I still find plenty of fun at the bottom of a bottle. Don’t have to be drunk to have a good time with an old friend.” But fun wasn’t the only thing alcohol gave you. As a human it could burn away all those pesky thoughts of heartache, of anger, of grief. Now the only way to get rid of them was to flip that switch.

It wasn’t very often that Claire tended to revisit places from her past but after being alone for so long she had wanted to feel close to her family for a while. The life she should have had had been taken from her a long time ago, she had never had the chance to live to an old age with her husband, she had never had the chance to see the people that her children would one day become and she had never had the chance to hold her grandchildren. She had checked in on them now and then but it had always been from a distance and it had made her heart ache to know that she couldn’t be there with them where she belonged. That chance had been taken from her by Lord Ainsley and she knew that she would never be able to forgive him for that. She had taken his life in order to save her family, the only person she had ever killed aside from her sister Violet when she had stopped her from killing Stefan and she knew that if she could help it then she didn’t want to be responsible for any more deaths. She was living her life the way that Stefan had shown her, the way that felt right to her, and even though she knew that there were plenty of vampires out there who probably wouldn’t understand the choices she had made she knew that she had done so for the right reasons. Never had she thought that she would end up running into Damon while she was in town or learn that Stefan was in town too. It had been such a long since she had last seen either of them and she knew that that was her own fault for not keeping to their meeting like she had wanted to but the truth was that she had felt far too ashamed. She had never wanted to become a vampire and even though she knew that the two of them would have helped her if she had asked them to it had felt like it was just something that she’d had to do on her own at the time. Now she had come to terms with what she had become and while it was true that she hadn’t perhaps completely embraced it just yet she was trying to do as much good with the long life that she had been given while she had the chance so she knew that that had to count for something. As Damon spoke she couldn’t help but laugh. “You always did like to underestimate me,” she teased. Back when she and Damon met she had been human and she should have been defenceless but she had still helped to rescue him and save Stefan and she wasn’t afraid to pitch in and try and do the same again now while she was in Mystic Falls. She was in no hurry to go anywhere and as Damon said she should head for greener pastures she shook her head. “Since when have you known me to run away from a fight?” she asked. That had never been her style and she knew that she wasn’t about to start now. “If you really believed that was the kind of person you are then you wouldn’t still be here trying to help Stefan,” she countered. Even when they were back in London he had still been unable to abandon his brother and she had a feeling that that hadn’t changed now. In a way she knew that was probably why they were so similar, she and Damon were both the older sibling and they knew what it was like to feel protective of someone younger and no matter how hard he tried to get her to she knew that she wasn’t going to give up on him. As he said that his adoring fans would be at his feet in an hour, Claire simply rolled her eyes. With what she knew about Damon she didn’t believe that for a minute and she wouldn’t be surprised if Damon didn’t either. “That’s true,” she admitted, taking a sip of her drink as she missed the next shot and stepped aside so Damon could go. “So what do you do with your time around here?” she asked as she looked over at him. He had said that Stefan had gone back to school but he hadn’t told her what he had been up to. DAMON SALVATORE

A hundred and fifty years ago a very different Damon Salvatore had stood less than a mile from this stop and watched his world as it had been slowly crumble. Or at least at the time it had felt slow. He’d watched, lips parted for gasping breath to escape, eyes flared wide, as the girl he’d been planning on trying to seduce away from his brother drank from the throat of one of his father’s servants. At that very moment Damon couldn’t remember having considered he’d ever be in Katherine’s place. That site had been the single snowflake that had finally sent the snowball tumbling though. It had rolled out of control, gathering speed until it had shattered on the ground of Mystic Falls on the night Giuseppe had shot both of his sons for siding with the enemy. That had been the night that the all too human and foolish Damon Salvatore had died, bleeding out in the woods while Katherine had been escaping, leaving him, Stefan and the rest of the town’s vampires behind to rot. She’d had no intention then of sticking around for them, she’d left both he and Stefan dangling on a string and for those hundred and fifty years he’d been hanging himself from it. Finding that out had changed him again, had changed his attitude towards his little brother, had hardened him at the same time it had softened something inside. Now, he was perfectly willing to admit that he’d thrown up his shields but Damon wasn’t about to say out loud about that thing inside of him that had cast off its shields, that had throbbed like hell every moment before he’d left, most moments he was gone. That thing was concerned for Stefan now, for Elena and OK, maybe there was a faint sense of concern for the waifs and strays his brother had gone and taken in too.
Undoubtedly if Stefan had been aware of what had happened to Claire after they’d parted his ways, his brother would’ve swept her up and tried to take care of her too. When he wasn’t in a ripper phase his little brother had a huge heart. Damon would’ve said his own had shrivelled in his chest long ago but Katherine had proven to everyone in this town otherwise. Frustratingly Claire had always known otherwise. Damon planned to keep her out this time, to avoid spilling every painful ounce of the truth but he was pragmatist enough to know he’d never avoid it if she stayed in town. Breezily Damon shrugged, the look on his face slowly morphing from fallen angel wickedness to full on halo-sporting angelic. ”I underestimate everybody, Pollyanna, sometimes they go and prove me wrong, other times, turns out I’m absolutely right.” That was a win-win situation for him in a way that few other things were. In his opinion if Claire stayed here long enough to muscle in on the fight there’d be no way she’d win and that wasn’t what he wanted for her. ”Never,” he muttered darkly, echoing his word of a minute ago. ”But this is one fight you should run from. We both should. Talk to anybody in this town and they’ll tell you that’s exactly what I am. Damon Salvatore, only out for himself.” And yet she was right, he was still here. All because of Elena. He tried to push her from his mind as he started to tease again, changing the subject from the grim to the entertaining. Grinning despite her eye roll, Damon sidled close before Claire shifted to take her shot and miss. Bending over the table for his own shot, Damon grinned back over his shoulder. ”You mean other than drape myself seductively over a pool table every afternoon?” he asked, taking his shot without really looking and sinking a ball. ”You’re looking at a member of the Mystic Falls Town Council. Fancy title huh?” A big title for an important job – keeping the rest of the council off of their backs.

Claire could have moved to Mystic Falls a long time ago in the hopes that Damon and Stefan would find her given the connection that the two of them had to the town but the truth was that she just hadn’t felt ready for that. Instead she had kept her distance, choosing to go about her life as best she could after she was given a daylight ring and do at least some of the things that she had always wanted to do. She had set aside her dream of becoming an actress after Violet died as it just hadn’t seemed right to pursue that dream after everything that had happened and without her sister by her side but that dream had slowly been replaced with others. In the end she had realised that she would be happy just getting to watch her children grow up and see out the rest of her days with her husband by her side but in the end that wasn’t to be. Claire had made her peace with the fact that they had lived their lives without her a long time ago and she had resisted the urge to look into any of their lives and see if her bloodline lived on. Becoming a police officer was something that she hadn’t realised she had wanted at first, she had attended different schools and obtained degrees in different subjects before finally realising that she wanted to do something good with her life. The moment she had awoken in transition she had realised that she didn’t want to become like Henry, Samuel or Lord Ainsley, she had wanted to live her life by her own rules and not take any innocent lives so she had instead adopted the diet that Stefan had shown her and she had been living that way ever since. It wasn’t always easy but it worked for her and she knew that that was all that mattered. As Damon spoke, she couldn’t help but smile. “You know I’m going to prove you wrong, I have every time so far,” Claire teased. She had understood it while she was human, back then she had been fragile and she had already been compelled and used as a human blood bag once but that still hadn’t stopped her from fighting back even to the extent that she had killed her own sister in order to save Stefan. Family had always mean the world to Claire but after everything that had been done to Violet the girl who had tried to kill their friend had no longer been her sister. She knew that Violet had been manipulated, made to do things through the sire bond that she otherwise wouldn’t ever have dreamed of doing, and even now Claire knew that she had made the right decision. She knew that it wasn’t the way that Violet would have wanted to live her life if she had been given a choice in the matter but everything that Violet had done had chipped away at her soul until there was nothing left of the girl that she used to be and that was dangerous. Stefan and Damon had become family to her during their time together and even though she had been reluctant to track them down for a long time she was glad that they were there now. As Damon said that he was only out for himself, Claire studied him carefully for a moment. “I don’t believe that for a minute,” she said at last. “If you were only out for yourself then you wouldn’t be here.” Even when he and Stefan had been fighting they had always looked out for one another and she wasn’t at all surprised that they were still doing that now. No matter what happened the bond between siblings was something that couldn’t be broken and she was glad that they still had each other. “That is a pretty fancy title,” she agreed. “I’ve heard rumours but nothing concrete. It isn’t a normal Council, is it?” she asked, knowing that there had to be more to it than that if Damon was involved. DAMON SALVATORE

In London it would have been quite easy for Stefan to finally get rid of the issue of his big brother hounding his every step, making his life a misery. All it would’ve taken was his brother and Claire leaving him in Samuel’s hands. They could’ve walked away, not giving in to the machinations of Samuel and his brother Henry but Stefan never would’ve done it. He’d always been the heroic sort, the type of guy who wouldn’t give up on a brother no matter how many times that brother attempted to stab him in the back. Claire had been the same with her sister, always ready to back Violet up, always trying to do the right thing by her, even if that meant having to kill her. That was something he’d never be able to do himself. Despite all he’d done to Stefan over the last century and a half he’d never had it in him to just yank his brother’s heart from his chest. Damon knew he’d had the opportunity at times, had the strength over his brother thanks to Stefan’s Vampi-tarianism. Still, he’d never taken it, he’d never proven anybody right that he was that far gone. It might’ve been the ultimate proof that his humanity switch had been flipped or … it could’ve been the opposite. Killing Stefan would’ve meant putting him out of his misery, not prolonging it in the way he’d promised, ensuring that he could drag this out for an eternity could be seen as the ultimate torture. Even after all of that, Stefan had remained on his side and Claire was right there alongside him, the two of them constantly assuring him that they could see something in him still that he couldn’t.
Damon wanted to get it through Claire’s head that he knew better this time but it would be like a red flag to a bull, a challenge to her to get into this deeper, to mine into his head deeper. The innocence on his face only lasted moments before he was narrowing his eyes at her. ”You ever realise that might not the right way to handle things every single time?” he asked. At least she would come at it wisely, he thought. His own control had a tendency to slip, frustration getting to him eventually despite his best intentions. Those weren’t always visible anyway. There was that permanent look of disappointment on the faces here, even after he’d scurried out of town with his tail between his legs and his heart seriously dented, if not bordering on broken by Katherine. Memories here were long and judgy little minds hard to change. Damon smiled shrewdly as he held up a finger at him. ”You don’t believe it, they do. Believe me, I tell any of them what I’m here for and you’ll hear nothing but ‘yeah, right’.” Maybe he had fostered that opinion of others at times but now … he was being altruistic and there was a little part of him that enjoyed it. He’d enjoyed rubbing their nose’s in the dirt over him being a part of the Founder’s Council too. He’d used it for his own agenda in the past but now, well, it was a protective measure for all those on the Council who’d slaughter anything inhuman in town given the opportunity. Making a sound of agreement, Damon shifted a foot to the right, taking a second shot that missed. ”Is anything in this town ever normal?” he asked, turning around to sit on the edge of the table for a moment. ”This is good old Giuseppe’s sort of a council – a lynch mob really for anything … abnormal. I figured what’s better than a Trojan Horse?” He’d slipped in under their noses, steered things the way he’d wanted. Damon wasn’t looking to point the finger at anybody except Niklaus Mikaelson right now though.

Claire hadn’t known what she would find when she got to Mystic Falls but she definitely hadn’t expected Damon and Stefan to be in town. She had heard that Mystic Falls had become a beacon for all things supernatural over the last few years and it had intrigued her enough to return to the town herself and see if she could put down roots this time but she hadn’t for one moment thought that the Salvatore brothers would have done the same. She had been too ashamed to have sought them out before, she had never wanted to become a vampire and yet that decision had been taken out of her hands and now here she was. She knew that she could have searched for them years ago and asked them to help her but deep down she hadn’t felt like she was ready to do so. That was why she hadn’t gone to the reunion they had arranged either, she had known that she just couldn’t face them and even now there was still so much that she had yet to tell Damon about what had happened since they had parted ways but she knew that that could happen later. Despite her earlier reservations it was good to see him again and she couldn’t help but feel at ease in his presence. Even when they had had a habit of winding each other up she had always felt like she could be herself around him and that hadn’t changed. He knew what it was like to have a younger sibling to look out for and be protective over and a part of her envied Damon for the fact that he still had Stefan in his life but Claire knew that things had worked out the way they were supposed to. If she had let Violet live then her sister would have killed Stefan and who knew how many other people so even now she was certain that she had done what she had needed to do. Now she couldn’t help but think that perhaps she should have sought the two of them out earlier but it was too late now and she had the chance to reconnect with both of them anyway so she knew that was all that mattered. She wasn’t sure how Stefan would react when she saw him but if Damon’s reaction was anything to go by then she knew that it wouldn’t be that bad. As Damon spoke, Claire felt a smile touch her lips. “It is when it comes to you. I like proving you wrong,” she teased. She had lost count of the amount of times that Damon had tried telling her that he wasn’t worth the trouble but as far as she was concerned he was her friend and he and Stefan were the closest thing to family that she had left so she knew that she wasn’t going to give up on either of them, she couldn’t. As he spoke again, she studied him carefully for a moment. “Why am I not surprised?” she asked, taking a sip of her drink as she looked over at him. Even back when they first met Damon had seemed determined to turn people against him so it wasn’t a surprise at all to learn that he had done so again in Mystic Falls. Eventually she had ended up seeing the real Damon Salvatore, though, and it was that Damon that she hoped those around him would get to see soon enough too. “I guess you are lucky you have someone in town who knows the real you,” she added with a smile. “I’m not going to give up on you and I’m not going to let you put yourself down, you should know that by now.” She never had before even back when she was human and she knew that she wasn’t about to do so now either. She cared about Damon and as far as she was concerned the world was better with him in it as opposed to without. “They’ll see that you’re here for the right reasons in time.” Damon could often mask what his true intentions were but she had seen through the bravado and she hoped that those around him would too. As Damon missed his shot and leaned against the table before telling her about the Council, Claire took another sip of her drink as she mulled it over for a moment. “Please just be careful,” she said at last as she set her drink down on the side. “Knowing what they’re up to is all well and good but you won’t be of any use to anyone if they find out what you are,” she warned as she picked up her cue and moved around Damon to take her shot. Damon liked to think he had people pegged the moment he met them. At the age of six he could’ve told anyone willing to listen, of which there were few in Mystic Falls, that Giuseppe Salvatore was a bullying tyrant, at the age of 18 he’d already voted his little brother most likely to get his heart broken by a girl, now he’d have said Liz Forbes was most likely to end up dead at the hands of a vampire in this town, but no matter how hard he’d tried for the last hundred and fifty years, he’d never been able to get anybody to keep him in the pigeonhole he’d tried to stuff himself into. He didn’t want to be the hero, he didn’t want to have to wear his heart on his sleeve and admit to it aching just because people nowadays expected him to vent every damn feeling – except for boredom and anger. They had their own neat little boxes that they wanted him in and since he didn’t fit, most judgmental little minds would rather he’d have walked out into the street and played with traffic. The Damon he was, the one he wanted to be, wasn’t the one they wanted to handle on a daily basis. Most of the time he’d have said it was a case of tough luck, they were going to have to put up with him, but that had never worked with Claire. No matter how many times they butted heads she refused to give up on him. That mirror was always in her hands, trying to make him see the him that she saw, the one that Stefan saw often enough that his brother refused to give up on him. He was never going to be able to see himself through their eyes but it didn’t mean either one of them was going to stop trying to make him to any time soon.
If it didn’t make him frown, didn’t make him feel something in that supposedly coal-like heart, then it wouldn’t have bothered him so much. It did though, it had him narrowing his eyes at her as she continued to grin. Huffing out a breath, Damon rolled his eyes. ”That’s gonna come back and bite you on the ass one day,” he warned, knowing he should’ve been taking those words to heart himself. Damon shrugged as he dropped his hand, that choir boy look etched on his features for a moment. Everything he’d done since he’d come back to town had been adding towards karma’s eventually slapping down of him. Leaning against the edge of the table, hip shot, ready to take his shot, Damon looked over his shoulder at her and lifted a finger to his lips. ”Do me a favour and don’t yell too loud about who you think I am. You’ll ruin my reputation Little Miss Sunshine.” She wasn’t going to stop though, never had been able to and Damon supposed that was where their biggest arguments had come from. Shaking his head, Damon leaned in for his shot. He wasn’t so sure he wanted them to see all of that, didn’t want to see the looks of guilt as they realised maybe he wasn’t the bad guy after all. A wry looked tugged at one corner of Damon’s mouth, maybe a little too much confidence in his grin. ”You know me, I’m always careful,” he bragged, knowing he had to be anyway. With something bigger and badder coming to town, he couldn’t take any chances. Damon set his cue against the side of the table, holding his hands up in innocence as he got to his feet. ”I am nothing more than I appear to be. The hottest, most charming guy in town and you … by the way … are losing.” The truth was that the game could still go either way but what was happening on the felt wasn’t half as important as what was going on beside it.

Returning to Mystic Falls wasn’t a decision that Claire had taken lightly, she had taken the time to think about it first and in the end she had realised that it would be worth moving there to feel closer to her family and have a chance at finding somewhere she truly belonged. For a long time after she became a vampire and left her family behind she had moved around without any real purpose in life. She hadn’t felt ready to start living her life properly after having to compel her husband and children to move away and get on with their lives without her and she had been forced to leave them behind completely. She had checked in on them from time to time but in the end she had realised that the pain she felt every time she did so was holding her back and stopping her from moving on so eventually she had stopped checking on them and had started to live her life again. Going through the police academy had been a big step in the right direction as far as she was concerned, it had given her something to work for and she had realised that even though it wasn’t an easy job it was worth it to be able to help those around her. She had made a friend while she was there, someone who had learned the truth about what she was and had accepted her anyway, and it had given her the confidence that she had needed to make the move. Before that she had attended different colleges obtaining various different degrees but nothing had made her really happy so now she hoped that she had the chance to change that. A part of her wondered if things would have been different if she had sought out Damon and Stefan after she became a vampire but she had felt too ashamed to do that. She had seen that not all vampires were bad during her time with them but she had also seen what could happen when the bloodlust took over. She had been forced to watch as pieces of Violet’s soul had been chipped away one at a time with each and every life that she took and Claire had never wanted to go down that same path herself. She had felt scared of what she had turned into and it had taken her a long time to feel comfortable in her own skin so even though the road to get there hadn’t been easy at all she knew that it was the one that she was probably supposed to take. In the end she had found her way back to Damon it seemed anyway and as he spoke she couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe so but it will be worth it since it annoys you so much,” Claire teased. While it was true that she cared about Damon she still wasn’t going to make things easy for him. Right from the start they had both known exactly what buttons to push but she knew that that was what made things so much fun. “It doesn’t sound like it would be a bad thing if I did. I’ll shout it from the rooftops if I have to,” she grinned. She knew Damon better than he probably wanted her to but even after so many decades apart he still hadn’t changed and she had a feeling that it was only a matter of time before others started realising that there was more to him than what he wanted them to see anyway, even without her help. “Not always careful enough though,” she countered. There were times before when Damon had managed to get himself into quite a bit of trouble but she hoped that history wasn’t going to repeat itself this time around. As he spoke again, she rolled her eyes. “There is more to you than that and we both know it,” she said as she picked up her cue and lined up her next shot. “And for the record I was just letting you win but now the gloves are off,” she said, taking her shot and sinking the ball into the corner pocket she had been aiming for. “Not so cocky now, are you?” she teased, taking a sip of her drink before lining up another shot. There were those in town who would’ve said that he was only ever motivated by boredom, frustration and anger. Damon knew how they’d come by that impression of him, it wasn’t like he wasn’t on occasion, or had ever given any sign of it being otherwise. He had been selfish, had put his century plus promise to his brother and his love for Katherine above everything else. It had all been driven by them … until things had begun to change and everything that had mattered most had certainly turned to sand in his grasp, dribbling out between his fingers while he’d been forced to stand there and watch. The five stages of grief had followed, each emotion burning beneath the surface, hidden from those unwilling to believe that his cold, black little heart was capable of anything more. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. He’d run the complete damn gamut of it all, most of it without those narrowed eyes aimed in his direction. They’d only seen what he’d allowed them to see, had held all of the rest of it at bay or had waited until he’d slunk out of town. Damon would’ve sworn he was over it now, only that faint trace of bitterness remaining under the animosity aimed at the one person who’d managed to drag him back here. And maybe that would’ve made him a liar. Stefan would’ve called him on it if his brother hadn’t just been glad that he’d come back here to help him out. Claire didn’t have any such compulsions, she’d never pulled a punch with him.
And wasn’t he a masochistic to be feeling some faint enjoyment over that now. Not that he was ever going to give Claire the satisfaction of hearing it. He’d never made it that easy for her and a part of him suspected she had her own masochistic streak going on, it was the only explanation for why she stuck by him so hard when all he did was push her away the way he did everybody else. Damon’s mouth curved devilishly, his cue tapping the floor as he shrugged at her. ”Maybe getting to drop a great big ‘I told you so’ will make that little bit of annoyance worth it. Trust me, you’re going to hear it.” He had so damn often that it should’ve been echoing in his ears by now. Fate had finally taken the chance to knock him straight on his ass when it had become obvious that Katherine had been fooling him from the moment he’d found her out behind his father’s house, snacking on one of the servants. At least with Claire, what he saw had always been what he’d gotten, despite the teasing she was an open book, completely clear with her motives. It drove him crazy at times, had him narrowing his eyes now, but he’d take that over the deception any day of the week. Damon made a sound low in his throat as dropped his finger away from his lips. ”Around here it’d definitely be a bad thing. I’ve got to live up to the legend that is Damon Salvatore after all.” And had to keep the cover that he’d put in place with just about everybody around him. It was better for all of them that way, including himself. ”I’m careful,” he echoed. Careful enough to keep himself alive, the rest of it, well … that was just the cost of trying to keep those he wouldn’t admit to caring about safe. She was still looking beneath his surface attitude, at least Claire was until he changed the subject. Damon’s brows drew together as she sank another ball. He closed in on her as she lined up her shot, bent close enough to practically touch his mouth to her ear as she took the shot. ”I will be when I get you to miss and I manage to sink those last two balls. What are we gonna bet on this shebang Fast Eddie?” Whatever it was, Damon was going to make certain he won the bet.

Claire had never imagined when she returned to Mystic Falls that she would end up running into a face from her past. For such a long time after leaving her husband and children behind she had cut herself off from everyone around her and it was only when she and Ares had gone through the police training academy that that had slowly started to change. It had always seemed easier to keep her distance from everyone rather than risk losing anyone the same way that she had lost Violet and everyone else she had ever loved. She had known that Damon and Stefan would still be out there somewhere, after all the two of them were too good at standing by one another to let anything happen to each other even when they didn’t see eye to eye but she had been too ashamed to reach out to them after she was turned. She knew now that she had been foolish and that she had wasted a lot of time but that was in the past now and she knew that it was time that she finally started stepping out of her comfort zone once more. There was a time when she had moved to London with her sister with dreams of becoming a famous actress. Back then she hadn’t been prepared to let anything stand in her way and while it was true that there were things about the person that she had been back then that had changed a long time ago her determination wasn’t one of those things and she knew that she wasn’t going to let herself slip back into her old habit of cutting everyone off again. A lot had changed since she had last seen the Salvatore brothers but one thing that didn’t seem to have changed was just how confident Damon was in himself. It was that confidence that had ended up getting him into trouble when they met and she knew that she wouldn’t be surprised if that ended up happening again but for now at least things seemed to be going well for him and she was glad about that. She knew that things hadn’t always been that great between Damon and Stefan and she also knew that Damon had blamed his brother for making him complete the transition but that was something that she hoped Damon was on his way to forgiving Stefan for if he hadn’t done so already. “We’ll see about that,” Claire said, a smile working its way across her face as she looked over at Damon. Damon had always been good at putting on an act while he was around other people but after everything they had been through together she had ended up getting pretty good at seeing through the act and that hadn’t changed now. “I doubt anyone here would go as far as calling you a legend,” she teased before nodding as he said that he was careful. She wasn’t entirely sure that she believed that, after all she knew how easy it was for Damon to get caught up in things that he shouldn’t and need help getting out of them, but she also knew that he was resourceful so she had to trust that things would be different this time. As she lined up her next shot Damon leaned in close and she could feel his breath on her ear. “Going for the distraction technique, are you?” she asked, never taking her eyes off the ball before taking her shot and sinking another ball into the corner pocket. “You’ll have to do much better than that,” she added as she straightened up and rested on her cue for a minute. “It was your idea, you tell me,” she said as he suggested that they place a bet on the outcome of the game. No matter what it was she knew that she wasn’t going to let Damon win. DAMON SALVATORE

Game playing was a skill Giuseppe had always excelled in. Undoubtedly, in those last moments of his life, he’d lamented the fact that he hadn’t passed a damn thing on to his sons but Giuseppe’s genetics had been harder to break away from than Damon had ever imagined. It had taken more than a century for him to look in the mirror and see that man’s face looking back at him, to see bits of his father in his own destructive behavior. Giuseppe had toyed with people, letting them see one of his faces before the other Janus like visage came into view. Business partners, other members of the Founding Families, the very vampires who would eventually escape the trap Giuseppe and the others had laid for them had all tasted his father’s arrogance and felt the hit of those hidden punches. The old mad had probably taken great delight in suckering them all in for his own ends. Damon knew the attraction of it, of that secret sort of satisfaction, but with him it had begun to wane before he’d come back to Mystic Falls to see what had drawn Stefan here. With the revelation of Katherine’s betrayal he’d tried to keep up a brave face, to make sure that all anybody here saw was the old Damon, the one whose temper was short enough to snap and lash out at every single one of them. It hadn’t worked with Stefan though, or Elena by the looks of things, and if she was to hear about everything that poor Damon had suffered through here, he doubted that it would’ve worked on Claire either. She’d always had a direct line of sight through his bull, through his ego, had been able to see that fragile part of him he’d spent his entire life as a vampire burying beneath his seething little pool of rage and loss. It left him vulnerable, Damon knew that, but strangely there was some appeal in it, in her…
There always had been one in riling Claire up, in getting that cool exterior to crack and reveal that heat and heart beneath. At times it had been a way to keep Claire at an arm’s length, at others it had been fun, plain and simple. This game, now, this was a combination of both with a little touch of figuring out what she’d been doing here thrown in. The latter was pretty obvious now, the former not quite so appealing. Fun was the thing and even with Claire taking little swipes at his ego, he was having just that. Damon snorted, shooting her a knowing look. He shrugged, his fingers shifting on the cue he was holding. ”There are a few who might … with the right sort of bribery …” Compulsion, or arm bending. It was doubtful there was a single person who would say it without that sort of prompting. Damon knew he had an ego but he also knew enough about who he was dealing with here in Mystic Falls. Including Claire. Undoubtedly she’d take his promise that he’d be careful with a pinch of salt, she knew him too well to believe that he wouldn’t get reckless at some point. She also would’ve laid money on him cheating at some point here … although their definitions on what that was were likely very different. Damon grinned, blowing softly against her earlobe as she continued to aim the ball. ”There’s nothing wrong with that is there?” he asked, his tone breezy. He cursed under his breath as Claire’s shot resulted in another potted ball. Huffing out a breath, Damon straightened up, sitting on the edge of the table to stretch his legs out in front of him. ”That’s just the start,” he promised. ”What are you willing to lose Nightingale?” Blue eyes narrowed almost wickedly, gleaming out from beneath a fringe of dark lashes as he looked up at her.
