Mystic Falls was Jacob’s birthplace, Maggie had always known that, and heading there had been a way for her son Jake to learn more about his dad’s side of the family. It had been just the two of them since before Jake was born and it hadn’t been easy becoming a single parent back then but Maggie had loved her son from the moment she had learned that she was pregnant. He was the only connection she’d had left to Jacob and she had known that she had wanted to raise him the way that they would have done together if Jacob’s life hadn’t been cut short the way it had been. She had never for one moment thought that he was still out there somewhere let alone that he was a vampire. She had mourned for him and she had done her best to move on with her life but the truth was that she had never opened her heart to anyone like that again. It had taken her a while to let him in to begin with and losing him had broken her heart so despite her son’s urgings to move on and be happy she had never even tried to find anyone else, instead content to hold on to the memories of the love she had lost. Maggie was certain that there were some who might not necessarily understand that and she would be lying if she said that there weren’t times when she had wondered if she was crazy but she knew deep down that she had made the right choice. She had known that there were Salvatores in Mystic Falls and she had hoped that they would be able to tell Jake about the family when he got there even if he had to keep the fact that Salvatore blood ran through his veins to himself but she hadn’t expected to find that Jacob was alive or that he was in town. To begin with she had felt sure that she was seeing things but he had known things that only Jacob would know and that had made her realise that it truly was him after all. She hadn’t yet told Jake because it wasn’t something that she could do over the phone, she knew that she needed to be patient and wait for him to get to town before telling him about his dad, grandfather and great uncle instead but she had told him that he needed to get there as soon as he could. It had been a little while since Maggie had arrived in town herself and she had been doing her best to get to know the town as much as she could since she had already made the decision that she was going to stay and see what was going to happen with Jacob but the truth was that she hadn’t really met any of the locals yet. She had grown used to moving around every few years since she wasn’t getting any older physically but she could see herself putting down roots in Mystic Falls and staying for as long as she could so she knew that she wanted to get to know the place a little better. She had heard about a bar in town called Campbells and even though it shared the name of an old friend of hers she knew that it had to be too much of a coincidence that she should find not just Jacob in the town but an old friend as well so she pushed the thought from her mind as she headed inside. Heading in the direction of the bar, Maggie took one of the empty seats and offered the bartender a smile as he asked what he could get her to drink. “I’ll have a white wine, thanks,” she said, offering him a smile in return as she pulled her purse out of her pocket. She had used all of her cash earlier that day so she pulled her card out of her pocket and handed it over, a curious look forming on her face at the puzzled expression on his at the sight of her name once he’d swiped the card. “Margaret Avery?” he asked and Maggie nodded. “Most people call me Maggie but that’s right. Is there a problem?” she asked. She sometimes had to change her name when she moved around but the bank she used was a supernatural one so with them she didn’t have to hide anything. “No problem at all, here’s your drink,” he said, placing both the card and glass down in front of her before excusing himself and heading out to the back. “Hey love, didn’t you say you had a friend called Maggie?” Henrik asked, hoping he’d remembered that right and then telling Olivia that she might want to head into the bar when she confirmed it and asked him why he was asking. Just a few weeks to go before Christmas. As a child they’d have been decorating the house with whatever her brothers and sisters could turn up. One year, just a couple before the war, they’d somehow managed to get a real tree from somewhere. The damn thing was too big to go through the door, which had left Jack levering the downstairs window out of its frame. They’d gotten the tree through it in the end, but, of course, it had been missing most of its needles by then and it had taken two days for someone to manage to get the window back. Their mum had been livid, but once they’d strung it with garlands and the decorations that had slowly been gathered over the years, it had looked festive enough.
Olivia looked up from the tray of beers she was pouring, grinning as she saw the one they’d put up in the corner of the pub. Maybe a little early, but who cared, it added more light to the place, the glass baubles glittering with the light of jewel coloured lanterns on it and the flickering light of the fire it stood behind. On Christmas eve she’d slip a few gifts under there for the staff who were going to all be nursing aching backs and feet by then. Little extras in addition to the bonuses she’d started as a tradition that first year. America might’ve been a country that believed in its service staff making a living off of tips, but she believed in paying them a good wage first of all. The rest was just a bonus and on holidays like the one coming up, those bonuses were definitely deserved.
Passing off the tray of drinks to one of her waitresses, Olivia let out a long breath. For now the bar itself was relatively empty. Raik and Henrik – another bonus on a night like this – were handling what business wasn’t going on at the tables. ”I’m just gonna take a quick break,” she told her fiancé, kissing his cheek before she stepped through the door behind the bar. The kids were old enough (technically) to spend the evening on their own while their parents worked, but she always checked on them anyway. Being a Mikaelson meant it was all too easy for trouble to come find you, even if you weren’t looking for it. Olivia curled up on the worn couch in her office, talking to them both for a few minutes before they’d protested homework.
The phone was still in her hand when Henrik appeared at the door. Letting out a little groan, Olivia went to push her way to her feet. Her smile and the rest of her froze at Henrik’s question. Her eyes narrowed faintly as she took a slow step towards him. ”Yeah, Maggie Avery. What’s brought that to mind?” Her brows furrowed, her hand finding his arm. She was already looking past him though, through the door that led back out to the bar, to the dark haired woman now perched on a stood on the other side of it. Henrik told her Maggie was there, confirming just what she could see. Oh, she hoped her shriek didn’t deafen him. Olivia bolted out of her officer, scrambling under the hatch without bothering to open it. She caught Maggie in a hug, laughing as she finally pulled away. ”Of all the pubs in all the world, you had to walk into mine. What are you doing here?” It was Mystic Falls. That was probably the only explanation you needed for anything. As far back as when Henrik had been born here the town – or village as it had been then – had lived up to its name.

Mystic Falls was Jacob’s home and it was for that reason that Maggie had decided that it should be the next place that she and Jake moved to. Even now all these years later she knew that her son still felt guilty about having to leave his wife and children behind when he became a vampire but he hadn’t had any choice. In time people would have started to notice that he wasn’t getting any older and when that happened it would have only put his family in danger. She knew that that was the last thing he’d wanted so she was certain that he’d made the right choice no matter how difficult it still was for him now. For a long time Maggie hadn’t known that Jacob had made the same choice before she even learned that she was pregnant with their son, he had become a vampire as well and he’d left them so that they wouldn’t have to go through any of that. It hadn’t been easy raising their son alone and Jake had urged her to move on and find love again but she had always known that she couldn’t do that. For better or worse her heart belonged to Jacob and even believing that he had died hadn’t changed that. Maggie had been in town for a little while now and she knew that moving there was the right decision to make. Jake hadn’t joined her yet and telling him that his father was alive after all and was in town definitely wasn’t a conversation to be had over the phone so she hoped that he would join her sooner or later. For now she knew that she needed to get to know her surroundings better and that had led her to taking a look around town that day. It really did seem like a nice place but she knew that looks could be deceiving. Mystic Falls was like a beacon for the supernatural and that meant that Maggie needed to be careful. She had grown pretty good at flying under the radar and she knew better than to draw the attention of hunters so she needed to keep her wits about her. She couldn’t resist heading to the bar she had heard about though – Campbells – and she quickly ordered herself a drink. The bartender’s reaction at the sight of her name was incredibly strange and it was enough to put her on edge but she knew that she needed to see how this was going to play out before making a break for it so instead she lifted her glass to her lips and took a sip. As it turned out it wasn’t a bad thing that he had recognised her name for she soon heard a shriek coming from the back room and before she knew it a familiar blonde figure was ducking under the bar and pulling her into a hug. “No way,” she breathed as she hugged Olivia back tightly. “I recognised the name but I didn’t think it would be anything to do with you! I can’t believe you’re here,” she laughed, her voice laced with astonishment as she spoke. “In Mystic Falls or here?” she teased, her expression turning playful as the shock began to sink in a little. “I came to Mystic Falls so Jake could get to know the place where his father was born. As for the pub, I heard good things about the place and I wanted to check it out for myself,” she explained. “Now I see why the bartender looked so surprised when he saw my name,” she added with a grin, offering the man a nod as he’d emerged from the back room as well and was smiling as he looked at the two of them. “What are you doing in town?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

She hadn’t known what had happened on the night that she’d saved her team from the bomb that surely would’ve killed all of them if it had been allowed to land unhindered. It had seemed crazy to think that she’d had anything to do with it. It had fallen short, that was all, the pilot had screwed up. That was what she’d put in her report and Olivia had held onto that belief until George had sat opposite her in the parlour and revealed the truth to her. It had opened up another world to her that had felt like it was closing like a door at the end of the war. Olivia had known that George would be heading home the minute the fight was over, but hadn’t realised that she’d be so deeply in love with him by then. He’d obviously figured it out, or at least had been as in love with her then. Protests had rolled out of her when he’d shown up at the house and he’d asked her to wait in the kitchen for them, like she hadn’t been a part of the conversation. Alice had rushed in the door before it was done, hissing ’George is here!’ at her like she hadn’t known it. When the door had opened again and she’d seen him standing there with the blue velvet box in his hand she’d let out a shriek.
An echo of it rang out now. This wasn’t on the same level as a marriage proposal, but after years of slowly losing those little parts of her ancient past, having a friend turn up was a reason for excitement. If Henrik wouldn’t have remembered Maggie’s name from one of what must’ve been a thousand stories she’d told him over the years maybe she would’ve slipped out the door again before she’d even emerged from the back to recognise her. Mystic Falls might’ve been small, but it was a town filled with people who drifted in and out, ones who wouldn’t always lay down roots here in the way she’d been able to with Henrik and the kids. Now Maggie didn’t have a choice in the matter. As she’d once been welcomed into the village that had been home for George, and into Henrik’s family here in Mystic Falls, she was gonna draw Maggie into her place, her family.
Olivia felt the backs of her eyes burn as she hung onto Maggie. What Mystic Falls could take away in the violence that simmered under the surface here, it could give back in spades. ”You’re not dreaming,” she promised as she drew back, although she might’ve been. Drawing in a deep breath, Olivia settled a hand on her chest for a moment. ”Of all the Campbells in the world it had to be me?” Her laugh grew steadier as she settled on a stool next to Maggie. ”Both,” Olivia insisted at Maggie’s teasing question. ”The answer to the second’s pretty obvious.” The drink she’d ordered from Henrik was what ninety-nine percent of the people who walked in the door were here for. She propped a hand on the edge of the bar, studying her friend’s face. ”Two lucky coincidences.” The world was filled with them and Olivia was glad for that tonight.
As Henrik emerged again, Olivia extended her hand over the bar towards him. She laced her fingers with his, the love she had for him warm in her expression. Henrik had been the one to give them this and it was one more thing for her to be grateful to him for. ”Well, my fiancé’s had to hear enough stories about you over the years to know your name by now. Maggie, this is Henrik, Henrik, Maggie … although you already know that.” Her chuckle rolled out again, her eyes sweeping back to Maggie as she asked what she was doing here. ”That’s a lucky coincidence too. I was looking for somewhere to settle down finally and where better than a place supposedly full of people like us. I came here, bought the bar to get some roots going and found an old friend here.” Her fingers tightened at Henrik’s as she finished the briefest version of their tale. ”Once you have a couple of kids, there’s no budging. Twins…” Olivia admitted. Here she was surrounded with the best things that had ever happened to her.

Deep down Maggie had always been curious about Mystic Falls. It was where Jacob was from and even though there was a part of her that knew that she should have moved on from him a long time ago, the truth was that she just hadn’t been able to bring herself to do that. He was the only man she had ever loved and she wouldn’t be surprised if he was the only man that she ever felt that way about. Her dad had tried so hard to set her up with someone he deemed to be suitable so she had courted so many different men in the past and none of them had even come close to Jacob. He had managed to sneak his way into her heart without her even realising it and she didn’t regret their time together one bit. It had come as a shock to learn that he was still alive after all and living in Mystic Falls but it had made Maggie feel even happier about her decision to move there. Right now she wasn’t sure when Jake would be joining her in the town but she really hoped that it would be soon so that he could finally meet his father and grandfather. She hadn’t told him that either of them were in town because she knew that it was something that she would be much better off telling him in person so she kept telling him that he needed to make the move sooner rather than later but so far he was being a little elusive about it still so all she could do was wait. Never had she thought that another face from her past would show itself in Mystic Falls but as she held onto Olivia tightly, she knew that this was real. It had been such a long time since they had last seen each other and despite Olivia’s assurances that she wasn’t dreaming there was still a part of Maggie that wouldn’t be surprised if she woke up to find out that this was all a dream after all. Right now she knew that all she could do was go with it, though, and the truth was that she was more than happy to do that. “You got that right. Let’s face it, it’s not exactly an unusual surname,” Maggie teased, still shocked that she had found not just the love of her life in Mystic Falls but also her closest friend as well. As Olivia said that the answer to the second was pretty obvious, Maggie couldn’t help but laugh as she lifted her glass to her lips and took a seat. “You’ve got a point there,” she grinned before setting her glass back down on the bar in front of her. As Olivia said that it was two lucky coincidences, Maggie shook her head. “Try three or four, it turns out that Jacob is still alive after all and he lives here in town with his father and uncle,” she explained. She knew that there was a chance that Olivia might know them if she had been in town for a while but she wasn’t sure if she had ever given Olivia Jacob’s surname. For a long time it had been too difficult to even think it let alone say the word out loud so she wouldn’t be surprised if she hadn’t. Watching as the man emerged again and Olivia laced her fingers with his, the love in their eyes was clear and it was enough to bring a smile to Maggie’s lips. “Your fiancé?” she repeated in disbelief. “That’s incredible news, congratulations!” she exclaimed, hugging Olivia tightly once more. “All good things, I hope,” she laughed. “It’s nice to meet you Henrik, you’ve got one of the best here,” she nodded, her smile still on her face as she looked over at him. Olivia was family as far as Maggie was concerned and now that technology had moved on as much as it had done, Maggie knew that there was no way that they were going to lose touch again. “When’s the big day?” she asked, not sure whether they had made any plans just yet. Listening intently as Olivia explained about her life, Maggie’s eyes widened as Olivia mentioned having twins. “So in the time you’ve been here you’ve done wonders with this place, got engaged and had twins? That’s incredible Liv, I’m so happy for you,” she said sincerely as she looked over at her friend. “You deserve all of this and so much more.” Olivia had lost someone she loved too but she had found her feet again and had built the kind of life that Maggie had really hoped her friend would find one day so she really was happy for her. Sometimes the world seemed like an impossibly small place – especially in Mystic Falls, when the town was trying to live up to its reputation. Other times, it was impossibly large, the distances between people and places impossible to cross. It was in those moments that Olivia found herself desperately missing her family. Growing up her entire world hadn’t stretched any further than a couple of miles. Even when her eldest siblings got married and moved out it was never too far – the majority not even leaving their street. Doors and lives were left open and they’d be in and out of both constantly. Sometimes it had felt a little confining, but if that was as far as she ever got she wouldn’t have been miserable – well not too miserable. She’d have been surrounded by love and by family. And the realisation that she wasn’t like any of them might never have come. Without turning her aging off she’d have grown old and grey – maybe she’d have outlived them all, but not in the way she had done after her world had grown so big and George had taken her out into the furthest parts of it.
Coming to Mystic Falls, falling in love with Henrik here, had left it shrinking again. She had her corner of it now, and like before, if this was the furthest she ever got from now on out, she knew she’d be happy with it. Especially since Mystic Falls had a penchant for drawing together old acquaintances here. Olivia smirked as she hoped up onto the stool. ”Honestly, it could’ve been worse. I could’ve married a Smith, just like my sister Katie.” Then it would’ve been a needle in a globe sized haystack of them – well, alright, the supernatural world was certainly smaller than that – a Europe sized stack of them maybe. Marrying Henrik wasn’t going to change the name of the bar, but if it was ‘Mikaelson’s’ above the door there wouldn’t be much chance of there being a case of mistaken identity. Given how many infamous supernatural families had attachments in Mystic Falls the connection between Maggie and the town shouldn’t have been a surprise, but she’d never put together Jacob with the place. Her mouth fell open, then clapped shut as she grabbed Maggie’s arm. ”Wait … Jacob Salvatore? I never put two and two together. It seemed like a common enough surname.” Not quite Campbell, but still, she should’ve been quicker on the uptake. She had her own tie to one of the infamous families herself. Olivia’s smile drew as Henrik arrived, squeezing his hand as she introduced him properly to Maggie finally. ”He asked, and I couldn’t say no,” Olivia admitted breezily, twisting her hand to show Maggie the ring. ”Thank you!” Even before Henrik had asked if she’d married him they’d been telling each other so much about their lives before – memories, family, friends. Maggie’s name had certainly fallen into all of it. Olivia snorted, shooting her friend a look. ”Please, it’s always the worst possible stuff.” She was grinning though, a blush working its way into her cheeks. Olivia winced faintly, shooting a look at Henrik. ”We don’t have a date yet, but soon. You’ll definitely be on the invite list. I can’t imagine doing it without you now.” There were days when she still couldn’t believe how much had changed for her over the last handful of years. The bar, Henrik, the kids, marriage, her happiness was growing exponentially. ”Thanks you. Again.” Feeling the tears well in her eyes again, Olivia let go of Henrik’s hand to pull Maggie back into a hug. ”Teenaged twins,” she explained. ”Alice and Connor. I’m sure they’ll love meeting their Aunt Maggie. How about you? How is Jake?” There was so much more to catch up on than just the barest details and it was going to take far more than one drink to get through it all.

Maggie had often thought about heading to Mystic Falls so she could see where Jacob grew up but the truth was that it had always felt wrong to go there without him. It had taken her a long time to feel like she was ready to take that step and in the end the decision had been made for her when she and Jake had talked about making their way there so he could get to know his father better. She hadn’t known that she would end up finding Jacob when she got there but just knowing that he was alive was enough to make the hole that had formed in her heart when he’d died start to heal. She couldn’t wait to fill Jake in on everything but she knew that she couldn’t tell him until he got to town, she had to tell him in person so she hoped that he would join her sooner rather than later. Until then she had realised that she might as well start getting to know the town better herself and that desire had brought her to Campbells and one of her oldest friends. “That’s true. There’s no way I would have found you then,” she teased. This time it had been a complete accident but there had been something about the name of the place that had drawn her in and now she knew why. It had felt comforting in a way to check out a place that shared the same name as her friend but she had never thought that her luck would end up striking twice in the same town like this. “That’s right,” she nodded as Olivia put the pieces together about Jacob. “Back when we were together I knew how much he wanted to find his father but I never imagined that I would find Jacob or any of his family here. Now it makes me wish I’d come here sooner,” she admitted. “Have you been in town long?” she asked, wanting to catch up on everything that she had missed out on since she had last seen Olivia. “I’m not surprised with that gorgeous ring. You always did know how to pick them, Liv,” Maggie teased, her expression turning playful as she looked from Olivia to Henrik and back again. “Serious though, I’m so happy for you. I always hoped you’d find happiness again,” she added gently. Maggie hadn’t wanted to move on after Jacob but she’d at least always had Jake to look after. Olivia hadn’t had anyone like that but she seemed happy now and Maggie truly was happy for her friend. “So Henrik, have you got any family in town?” she asked, wanting to get to know her friend’s fiancé a little. “I have my brothers, sisters and a niece as well,” he explained and Maggie nodded. “Anyone I’d know?” she asked, a little surprised at the smile that formed on his face at that as he turned to look at Olivia. “Do you want to tell her what family you’re marrying into, love, or should I?” he asked, clearly amused which was enough to make Maggie a little confused. “Why do I get the feeling I’m missing something here?” she asked, an eyebrow raised as she looked over at her friend as well. As Olivia said she only told Henrik the worst possible stuff, Maggie rolled her eyes playfully. “I wouldn’t put it past you,” she teased. As Olivia winced at the question about when the big day was, Maggie studied her friend carefully for a moment. “What’s that look for?” she asked, not wanting Olivia to feel like she had to hide anything from her now. “I’d better be on the list, you really don’t want me crashing your wedding because you didn’t invite me,” she warned although her tone was playful as she spoke. It wasn’t long before Olivia was hugging her and Maggie hugged her back tightly. “Teenagers? Now I know I’ve missed out on a lot. I can’t wait to meet them,” she admitted, knowing that there was no way she was going to go that long without seeing her friend again. It would be much easier to stay in each other’s lives now with the way technology had moved on and she really was glad about that. “I’m good and so is Jake. He’s doing a lot better now than he was,” she admitted. Her son had struggled a lot after he’d become a vampire and it had taken him a long time to start getting back to his old self after having to leave his wife and children behind but he was getting there now. “I’m waiting until he gets here before I tell him about Jacob, Stefan and Damon - it isn’t something I can do over the phone. I know he’ll love that his Aunt Olivia is here too.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Even without her having the commonest name on the planet, it felt like a strange little miracle every time someone from her past, from those travels that had carried her so far from her quiet little corner of London, had turned up here in Mystic Falls. George had always said that fate moved in mysterious ways, but this felt like so much more than that. She’d have said it was like someone was guiding them altogether, wishful thinking would’ve said it was George or her mum, stirring things from their afterlife to make sure she hadn’t ended up alone. It was probably far less personal, but Olivia was going to hold on to the thought that the people she’d lost wanted her to be happy and were making sure it happened for her – starting with Henrik and the kids. They’d been so much more than she’d ever allowed herself to hope for in those dark decades after George had died. Everything, everybody, she’d been gifted with since were just the cherries on top of a very big sundae.
The corner of Olivia’s mouth hitched higher as she nudged her friend. ”You would’ve done eventually. These things always seem to happen for a reason.” And either way she was glad that Maggie had found her way here. She was sure that Jacob had felt the same when Maggie had arrived. ”From what I’ve heard you’d have found a Salvatore of some sort here, even if you’d struck out with Jacob. The founding families seem to stick close to home.” Even if what some of them had become meant that they had to drift in and out, waiting for memories to fade before they made their appearance – any resemblance to the older generations just one of those familial quirks. Olivia reached out and patted Maggie’s arm almost reassuringly. There were always going to be those moments when you questioned the decisions you’d made, but these days she was staunchly holding on to the idea that things always worked out in the end, despite all the pain it took to get there. ”You being here now is all that matters.” Humming lightly at her friend’s question, Olivia scrunched up her nose. ”Five years,” she puffed out eventually, the answer almost surprising her. She had meant to put down roots for a while when she’d arrived, but she’d never expected what she had ended up with.
Her expression softened at the thought, love shining in her eyes as she looked at her husband to be. After a moment where it felt like they were the only two in the world, Olivia was showing Maggie her grin, chuckling at her teasing. ”More like I’m always lucky in the ones that’ve picked me!” She had been so lucky though, to find an incredible husband in George and then to be blessed with that sort of love again after years of heartache. ”Thank you,” she murmured, feeling almost teary at Maggie’s words. Her laugh was watery this time, her hand squeezing Henrik’s. ”I’m so glad you’ve found Jacob too. It looks like we’re both happy.” So many had been blessed by Henrik’s return, his family included. The Mikaelsons might have been rumoured to be violent and hard hearted, but so far she’d found them to be anything but. As Maggie started to probe about Henrik and his family, Olivia bit her lip and smiled. She let out a long breath as she rolled her eyes back at her friend. ”You are … a little. On my wedding day I’m going to become Olivia Mikaelson.” It would only have the single name drop to have Maggie understanding everything.
Olivia fluttered her lashes at her friend. It was never the worst things, just those good memories that had stuck with her, carrying her through the worst days after the hunters had taken George from her. ”That was because I should’ve come up with one by now,” she admitted, glancing back at Maggie. ”Now you’re here I guess it’s another reason why we should. Pick a day, get the invitations out, make sure all the people who matter most are there.” Including Maggie now. Olivia clung to her for a moment before she drew back, grinning at her. ”You should come to dinner, bring Jacob and Jake too, if they can make it.” Reading between the lines of what her friend was saying, Olivia dropped her hand to her arm again, squeezing gently. ”If you need someone there when you tell him, you know I will be. Does he have any idea that they might be here?” It would be an even bigger shock if not.

“I guess you’ve got a point there considering who else I’ve found here,” Maggie said, a smile touching her lips as she nudged Olivia back gently. There was a time when she had thought that it would just be her and Jake and that would be it but in a short time she had been reunited with Jacob, she had found out that he had family in town and she had bumped into Olivia as well. This time luck seemed to be on her side for once and Olivia knew better than to take that for granted. “It needed to be one of the right Salvatores I found, otherwise it would have just been weird,” she admitted. She knew that she could have found any one of the human Salvatores that used to call the town their home and it wouldn’t have been the same. Now she had found Jacob and she had his father and uncle around and it made all the difference as far as she was concerned. Maggie had been fine looking after Jake on her own but she didn’t have any family of her own left so it was good to reconnect with some of his. “I know, now I just have to wait for Jake to come join me,” she nodded. She knew that she could have told him about his family over the phone but she hadn’t wanted to do that, she needed to tell him in person and it felt right doing so when he got to town. “That’s a pretty long time,” she admitted as Olivia said she had been in town for five years. “You’re not planning on moving on soon, are you?” she asked, knowing that that was the curse of not ageing. “Don’t sell yourself short, you’re a catch, Liv,” Maggie assured her. The woman was incredible and Maggie knew that she deserved to be happy especially after everything that she had been through. “Looks like it. Definitely took us long enough,” she nodded. For a long time Maggie had given up on the idea of ever being happy and even now she had no idea how things were going to go since she and Jacob weren’t actually together but at least now they had the chance to figure that all out. When it came to Olivia’s relationship Maggie definitely felt like she was missing something especially with the way Henrik and Olivia were being with each other. Maggie knew that she was out of the loop and she studied her friend carefully as Maggie rolled her eyes. “What am I missing?” she asked. It wasn’t long before Olivia told her and Maggie couldn’t deny that she was surprised. “Mikaelson? As in the Originals?” she asked, looking from Olivia to Henrik and back again. “Wait, I don’t remember a Henrik,” she admitted. “The ones you’ve heard of are my siblings, I died a long time ago and was brought back,” Henrik explained and Maggie nodded, her head still spinning somewhat. “Then that makes it even more special that you’ve found each other.” There was a part of her wanting to ask if Olivia was crazy but she trusted her friend’s judgement and if she was happy then that was good enough for Maggie. “I’m sure you will and if you need help with anything, all you have to do is ask,” Maggie assured her, knowing that she would help in any way that she could. As Olivia spoke again, Maggie felt a smile touch her lips. “Only when you’re ready, we’ll all be there when you are,” she promised. Maggie wasn’t planning on going anywhere, that was for sure. “I’d love that but it might just be me for a while. Jake isn’t here yet and I don’t know how things are going to go with Jacob,” she admitted. She loved Jacob and always had done but it had been such a long time since he had left and she knew that they needed to figure out who the other was now. “Thank you, I might take you up on that,” she nodded. “He doesn’t have a clue, I told him that Jacob’s family are from here and there might still be some in town but I can’t tell him about them over the phone. It wouldn’t feel right.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

If all you looked at were the newspaper headlines – screaming about people going missing and the sheriff’s latest attempts at keeping people out of the woods – then you’d think that Mystic Falls took far more than it gave. Olivia had always prided herself on looking deeper and had learned almost as soon as she got here than the town definitely offered more than she’d ever expected. She grinned at Maggie as she rocked lightly on her stool with the nudge. She was glad Maggie had found the good side of it all the same way she had. Her reasoning could’ve covered the bad too, but that thought hollowed her stomach out too much to dwell on it. ”You mean if you walked up to some poor guy who doesn’t have a clue about things and asked if he’d happened to father a son about a hundred and fifty years ago?” she asked, dropping her voice a little, even though she knew that anybody who’d understand what she was talking about could’ve heard her anyway. It was likely to come as a shock to Jake all the same – his dad right here, a grandfather and great uncle too. ”I’m sure he’ll be here soon,” Olivia promised, laying a hand on Maggie’s arm for a moment.
She knew what that anticipation did to you, how it felt to want something to happen so badly, but not having enough power over it to guarantee an outcome. It was how she’d felt when she’d first moved to Mystic Falls, hoping for the settled life that she’d lost when George had been killed. Olivia made a low sound of agreement in her throat before she was shaking her head. ”Not any time soon. We’re safer here than almost anywhere else I’ve been and Henrik has family here. I’m not gonna take the kids away from that.” The Mikaelsons tended to stick together, but outside of Mystic Falls she imagined the family would drift apart. Her family had been the opposite, but there weren’t many of them around anymore. If there had been they’d have driven Henrik nuts by now probably. Olivia scoffed, but a blush was working its way up her cheeks. ”I’ll take your word for it … and theirs.” She was just glad she could hear such things from a friend she’d missed dearly.
Most in the supernatural world tended to bristle when the Mikaelsons were mentioned. Some saw them as a scourge, most definitely saw them as people they didn’t want to cross. Becoming one of them likely painted a target on her back, but Olivia absolutely didn’t care. She exchanged looks with Henrik at Maggie’s question, nodding as she tried to clarify. ”Spot on,” Olivia murmured as Henrik began to fill her in. She squeezed his hand as he explained, her heart aching for them all over again. ”It does,” she said lightly, her eyes misting up a little. ”It makes me incredibly lucky. I couldn’t imagined it working out any better than it did.” That wasn’t to say there hadn’t been troubles for them, but at the end of it she had everything she could possibly want.
”I may take you up on that,” Olivia warned, grinning sheepishly. By now they should’ve had more plans in place, but it had always seemed like they had plenty of time – not that she should’ve taken advantage of that given their pasts. Olivia was immensely grateful for the help Maggie was already offering. ”I can promise you weddings are going to happen overnight in this family, so I’m sure we’ll still be discussing things when he gets here. We’ll stay positive about it all, alright?” Her heart ached for her friend. Olivia shook her head like she was immediately brushing off Maggie’s doubts about what she was doing. ”That’s understandable. You’re doing the right thing, Maggie. You know where I am if you need any support with it. Have you been spending time with Jacob’s family?” She imagined that Damon might have been prickly around a possible stranger, but she’d seen enough of Stefan to know that he was the sort who really cared about family.

Heading to Mystic Falls was meant to just be a way of making sure that Jake could learn about his father’s side of the family. Maggie had told him as much as she could about Jacob but there were things that only that side of the family could fill in and she had wanted her son to finally be able to get some answers. She hadn’t counted on finding out that Jacob was actually alive after all or running into Olivia while she was there but the truth was that now she had a reason to stay. Jake hadn’t followed her to town yet and she knew that she couldn’t tell him any of this over the phone so she just had to try and be as patient as she could. That wasn’t always her strong point but for her son she knew that she could make an exception. It had just been the two of them for such a long time and even though she knew that he would be thrilled when he found out who was in town, she knew that she needed to keep it a surprise until he got there. “Exactly,” Maggie agreed. “The last thing I expected was to find Jacob here, I really thought he’d died but I thought perhaps if I found some of his family who knew about all of this then they might have been able to fill in some of the blanks,” she explained. It had seemed like a long shot but it had paid off in the end and she really was glad about that. “I hope so. I know he’s going to be thrilled to see his Aunt Olivia too,” she grinned as she took a sip of her drink. The town wasn’t quite what Maggie had expected but with the people she had found there it was already starting to feel like home. “That’s good to know,” she admitted as Olivia said it was safer there than almost anywhere else she’d been. “I can’t blame you for that, family is important,” Maggie nodded. She hadn’t realised just how important until she’d lost her own family but now she knew to hold onto what she had tightly in case it tried to slip away again. “In that case I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere anytime soon either, we were looking for a place to settle down and this seems to be as good as any,” she shrugged. She had grown used to having to start over somewhere new but this time was different. This time Jacob and Olivia were both in town and she had more reason than ever to want to stay. “You’d better, you know I’m always right,” Maggie teased as Olivia said she would take her word for it that she was a catch. Maggie had known that she was missing something about Olivia and Henrik but as Henrik started to fill her in the pieces began to fall into place. She hadn’t expected that at all and she knew that it was going to take some time to get her head around it but Olivia was happy and that was all that mattered to her. “I’m so happy for you Liv, you deserve this,” she said gently as she reached over and gave her friend’s hand a squeeze. “You’d better take care of her, you hear?” she asked as she glanced over at Henrik, a smile touching her lips as he nodded and promised that he would. Maggie knew that Olivia was more than capable of looking out for herself but she had been through so much and she had lost so much already so for once she really wanted things to work out for her friend. As Olivia said she might take her up on her offer to help, Maggie’s smile widened. “I hope you do, I’d be happy to help,” she nodded. Weddings were a lot more extravagant than they were the first time Olivia had gotten married and Maggie knew that she would do anything she could in order to make it easier for Olivia. “Alright,” she nodded. “Honestly I’m just trying to take it one day at a time right now. I knew I still loved Jacob but I didn’t realise how much until I saw him again. Things are so complicated right now though and we’re different people not to mention the most important thing is making sure that Jake gets to have a relationship with his father. It’s all such a mess,” she admitted. Truth be told she had no idea how she was going to unpick it all but Jake had to be her main focus. “I know, thank you,” she said gently as Olivia said she knew where she was if she needed any support. Maggie was so used to trying to do things on her own but she knew that this time she might have to take her friend up on her offer to help. “I’ve spent a little time with Stefan and he seems nice but I’m not sure what to make of Damon yet,” Maggie shrugged as she took a sip of her drink. “Do you know much about them?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

For the first few days after George had died Olivia had found herself considering going home, to England. Most of her siblings had still been alive then, their children of an age where there was a chance they might not remember aunt Olivia. She couldn’t have lied to them the same way in person that she had in a letter or over the phone. The truth would have to come out and although she knew there was nothing that ever would have stopped them loving her, it felt as though revealing what she was to them would totally change how they saw her. Perhaps the same worry had kept Jacob away from Maggie all these years. It was so hard to get over the voice in your head. Sometimes fate didn’t give you a chance to carry on doubting yourself, it threw a blessing right there in your path.
”I guess you can do way more than that now,” Olivia said with a grin. This town had given Maggie a huge opportunity, the same way it had her. All those pieces of her past and her long and happy future slotting together. Maggie was a part of that picture now and it’d feel like another blessing if Jake was too. ”I’m gonna tell him the last time I saw him, he was this big.” Olivia chuckled lightly, holding her hand somewhere around the level of her chest. It didn’t matter how long she’d been away from people, it was still so easy to imagine them being just how they’d been before. Maybe that would’ve been the same with her family, but that was still something she hadn’t tried to test out.
She wished the kids could’ve grown up with her family there too. Henrik’s family made up for their absence, but she still mourned each of them. Olivia’s throat felt thick as she glanced at her friend and nodded. ”It is and now I’ve got some of mine here.” She reached out and squeezed Maggie’s arm, squealing out her excitement as Maggie assured her they were likely to stay. ”It’s better than most,” she corrected her. Some would’ve disagreed, especially since the Mikaelsons were here now, but for her that was just a bonus. The family had given her so much more than she’d expected and, of course, there was Henrik. All this talk about her being a catch had her blushing, but as she glanced at him, she knew that Maggie wasn’t entirely wrong.
Thankfully Maggie didn’t recoil from Henrik the same way some would’ve done. Just the Mikaelson name could be enough. Olivia felt her worries about it float away and reached over with her other hand to pat Maggie’s arm gratefully. ”Don’t worry, he will. Thank you.” Her eyes were full of love as she looked back at Henrik. She knew that he loved her, that he would do anything for her and their kids and the feeling had been mutual from the moment they’d kissed. Maggie would see all of that if she helped out with the wedding, well, she would anyway, but all that they felt for one another would be on show at their wedding.
Hopefully by the time they got around to actually finding a date and a venue, Jake and Jacob would be here too. She hoped that things would work out for their family too, the past melting away to give them the life the three of them had always deserved. ”It can sneak up on you,” Olivia admitted, smiling at Henrik, it had been their reunion that had changed everything for them. ”It doesn’t matter how much you’ve changed, or what’s happened since, only that you’re all willing to try.” She was going to hold onto the belief that it would be enough for them. Getting to know Jacob’s family would help. ”Some. Stefan’s definitely nicer than Damon,” she admitted before she sipped at her drink. ”Damon’s got a reputation for being an asshole, for not caring what anybody thinks, but I think that’s all just for show. Meet him with a decent bottle of bourbon in hand and you’ll win him around.” So far she’d definitely seen more of Damon in the bar than Stefan.

“Fingers crossed. We’ve got so much to catch up on but things a little awkward. I’m still in love with him, Liv, but I don’t know what is going to happen next,” Maggie explained. She knew that it would have been much easier if she had fallen out of love with Jacob because then she could have compartmentalised everything and just processed the fact that her son’s father was back in her life. Things had never been that easy for her, though, and Maggie knew that it would be foolish for her to expect that to change now. She had no idea what the future was going to hold but she knew that she needed to focus on Jake right now more than anything else. He was meant to be meeting her in Mystic Falls but she wasn’t sure when he was going to be arriving in town so she just had to try and get her head around everything in the meantime. “He definitely won’t thank you for that, he’s taller than me,” she grinned. “He took after his dad in that department.”Maggie felt a smile touch her lips as Olivia said that she had some of her family in town now too. “You always were the sister I never had,” she said gently. Maggie had become her family a long time ago and even though it had been years since they had last seen each other, it was easy to fall back into that pattern. There had only been a few people over the years that Maggie had felt like she could count on but Olivia was at the top of that list. “I think you’re a little biased,” she teased as Olivia said that Mystic Falls was better than most places. Her friend had found love and started a family while she was in the town and she seemed to be doing pretty well for herself as well. Maggie was beyond happy for her and knowing that Olivia was in town changed things. “You being here is definitely a reason to stay,” she admitted, knowing that she wasn’t in a hurry to part from her friend again. It was definitely a surprise that Olivia had fallen for a Mikaelson but Maggie could see that her friend was happy and that was all that mattered to her. She had only just met Henrik but he seemed like a nice guy so far so Maggie knew to give him the benefit of the doubt until he gave her reason not to. “Not that you need looking after anyway, you were always good at looking out for yourself,” she said, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at Olivia. Her friend had always been more than capable of taking care of herself. “The two of you really are adorable,” she added as she looked between the two of them. It was clear just how in love they were and Maggie had to push thoughts of Jacob from her mind. He was the only guy she had ever felt that way about but she wasn’t sure whether the timing would ever be right for them. “You’re right about that,” Maggie nodded as Olivia said that love could sneak up on you. Maggie had thought that she was incapable of loving someone or being loved by them until Jacob came along and even then it had taken her a while to let him in. “I am but I don’t know if he is. I felt like a part of me died with him back then but now I feel whole again. Even if nothing else happens, he was my best friend just like you are.” Jacob had managed to break down the walls she had built to protect herself and she had never been the same after that. Having him back in her life now in any capacity was something to be cherished as far as she was concerned but sooner or later she hoped she would get the answers she needed. “That sounds about right,” she laughed as Olivia said that Stefan was nicer than Damon. “I’ll remember that. I really want them both to like me.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

After George had died, Olivia had found herself terrified of moving on. She skipped from city to city, trying to hide in the crowds and avoid anyone who might have come looking for revenge for what had happened to the hunters, but she hadn’t really allowed herself to live. Settling somewhere again, starting over, maybe even finding someone to love, had felt like a betrayal to the only man she’d ever loved then. It meant she’d denied herself a real life for decades, but maybe she’d had some vain hope that one day the universe would give George back, that the cracks in her heart would heal. She glanced at Henrik and smiled softly. It had in the end, just not in the way she’d expected.
”You can’t let what might happen hold you back,” she told Maggie lightly. She reached out, squeezing her friend’s hand as she looked back at her. ”I’m sure he’s still in love with you too and that means you’ve got a good chance at coming out of this together.” Like she had with Henrik. He’d taken that first step and then they’d tumbled into a life that was so much more than she’d ever expected. Maggie’s life was going to bloom here the same way, with both Jacob and Jake likely to be here there was no other way things could turn out. Family would help with that, blood and otherwise. Her kids had a wider family around and Olivia was so glad that they got to experience that. She smirked at Maggie, nodding slowly. ”I’m sure I’ll see plenty of his mom in him too, and I’ll remind him of that.” While he was towering over her.
She’d been the same way with her nieces and nephews until she’d had to leave. None of them were related to her by blood, but her brothers and sisters had never treated her any differently. In their eyes she was their sister, just as Maggie was like a sister to her now. No matter the distance, you held on to those connections. ”You were the same to me,” she promised, turning the squeeze of Maggie’s arm into a half hug. She snorted as she drew back, waving off Maggie’s teasing. ”Maybe a little, but I’m not wrong this time. You’ll see, you’ll come to love the place as much as I do.” And the people in the town would make all the difference to that. Henrik and the kids had become her anchor here, but there were so many others here that she wouldn’t be able to leave behind either.
Olivia’s eyes rolled as she looked away from her fiancé to her friend. She’d been a fighter before George, determined to do her part to keep England safe, but he’d taught her how to hone her powers, to protect herself. She’d fallen in love with him during those sessions, and had tried to use all he’d taught her to protect Henrik when the angels had come for him. ”I try,” she admitted, fluttering her lashes. Colour bloomed in her cheeks as Maggie called her and Henrik adorable. ”We try with that too. Love makes all the difference in the world.” That change at a second love had changed her world. Reaching for Henrik’s hand, Olivia drew it to her lips, pressing a kiss there before she let go.
It seemed as though Maggie wanted her own second chance, but how that turned out was going to entirely rely on Jacob. She hadn’t been exaggerating about things working out for them, she wasn’t psychic, but she was sure it would. ”If he’s not he’ll have me to deal with,” she joked lightly. ”When you feel like that about someone, it doesn’t disappear, no matter how much has happened. The two of you need to talk, to tell each other how you feel and where you want this to go.” Talking to Jacob’s dad would probably help with that. No matter the circumstances, parents always knew what was going on in their kids’ heads. Stefan would want the best for his son, and he would get that with Maggie. ”Honestly, they won’t be able to help but like you,” she promised. ”Damon might be stubborn, but he’s not blind and neither is Stefan. You can invite them here if you want? Arrange some sort of a meeting on neutral ground?” If it went bad she’d always have the option of using her power to jam the doors the same way she had with Elijah and Kol when they had been at each other’s throats.

“I hope you’re right,” Maggie admitted as Olivia said she and Jacob had a good chance at coming out of his together. “There has never been anyone else but him, in fact I’m pretty sure he’s the only one who could put up with me,” she laughed. She knew that she had been unbearable to start with when they met, her father had been trying to find her a husband and every man he’d tried to set her up with had been awful. She hadn’t made it easy for Jacob to get close to her but as time went on she had started to enjoy being around him. He had managed to get under her skin in a way that no other man ever had and she had missed him more than she had realised. “I can’t keep worrying about what is going to happen between me and Jacob though, his relationship with Jake is much more important,” she added. Her son would always come first no matter what so everything else would just have to take a backseat. “I don’t doubt that,” she grinned as Olivia said that she would remind Jake that there was plenty of her in him as well. “Now that I have to see.” She knew that Jake would probably be embarrassed but his reaction would be priceless, of that she was certain. “It’s so good to see you again and this time we’ll be able to keep in touch from now on,” Maggie said, knowing that was going to be so much easier to do now. Last time they had seen each other was so long ago and it would have been so difficult for them to stay in touch. Now things were different, they could stay in touch no matter where in the world they ended up and they could make sure they were always there when they needed each other, and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Olivia was family just as much as Jake was and Maggie knew that they had missed out on spending time with each other enough as it was. “You’re probably right. I already have enough reasons to want to stay anyway so I’ll make it work,” she nodded. It was always strange starting over in a new place but she was certain that she would come to like Mystic Falls once she got to know it better. It had already brought two of the most important people in her life back to her so as far as she was concerned it was already off to a pretty good start. “Don’t you roll your eyes, you know it’s true,” Maggie grinned. “That doesn’t mean that anyone who hurts you won’t have me to answer to, though,” she added. Olivia had been through so much already and the last thing Maggie wanted was to see her get hurt again. Maggie had always been protective of the people she loved and that really hadn’t changed. “I can see that. I’m so happy for the two of you,” she said, her expression softening as she looked over at the two of them. “I’m so glad you’ve been able to find someone who makes you feel like that again.” It hadn’t been easy for Olivia after George died but her friend had moved on and Maggie really was happy for her. Maggie couldn’t help but laugh as Olivia said that Jacob would have her to deal with if he wasn’t willing to try and make things work with her. “That’s good to know,” she grinned. “I know we need to talk but I don’t want to push him too far too quickly. I just dropped the bombshell on him that he has a son he’s never met, everything else needs to go at his speed.” It had been a shock for Maggie to find out that he was still alive after she’d mourned his death all those years ago but right now she didn’t have time to dwell on that too much. Making sure that Jake got to know his father was her first priority and everything else would come after that she hoped. “I hope so. Jacob said he wanted me to meet his dad the first time I saw him again and he’s the one who introduced us so I’m taking that as a good sign,” she admitted. Of course he could have only wanted to do that because he’d wanted his dad to meet the mother of his son but she was trying not to think about it like that. She had felt the spark between them the moment she laid eyes on Jacob again and she was certain that he’d felt it too so she knew that she just needed to be patient. “I want to but I also don’t want to overstep. It’s probably best I follow Jacob’s lead and let him decide how things play out with them. They’re his family, after all,” she shrugged. OLIVIA CAMPBELL
