”I’m sure he’s not,” Olivia assured her friend, snorting as she shook her head. She glanced at Henrik, knowing just how close to her friend’s situation she’d been herself. After George had died, she’d been so certain that she was going to spend the next ten lifetimes alone, mourning for the only man she’d ever believed she would love. The universe, and more importantly, Henrik, had proved her long. Unlike Goerge, Jacob was still alive, and that gave Maggie a different sort of opportunity. She could get back the man she loved, they could finally have the life that they’d all deserved. ”I’d tell you to stop worrying, but I know how impossible that is. I think when you find out how it’s going to go between them, you’ll realise that things are gonna work out for the two of you too.” She laughed lightly at Maggie and gave her hand one last pat before she drew back. ”I’ll make sure you’re there to see it,” she promised.
Over the years she’d had so many moments that she’d wished she could share with her family and friends. The words would get stuck in her throat, trapped in her fingertips as she realised that she couldn’t reach out to any of them to tell them about it all. God, she’d felt isolated, lost at sea, for so long before she’d come here. Mystic Falls had ended up being her safe harbour, Henrik the lifeline that had dragged her out of those cold waters. Olivia rubbed Maggie’s back as she drew back from the hug. ”You too. This time I’m gonna track you down if we lose touch, and I promise I can be relentless.” She sent Henrik a wicked little grin at that sentiment. Stubbornness definitely ran on both sides of their family. ”If you’re ever struggling to, you know where I am.” Olivia met Maggie’s eye, reinforcing her words with a stern look. ”I mean it, you can come to me for anything.” Like the woman who’d taken her in, Olivia was determined to be someone other people could always rely on, and Henrik had been exactly the same for as long as she’d known him.
”I know,” Olivia promised, her cheeks continuing to glow. God, she was lucky to be surrounded by people who would do just as much for her as she was for them, it had always felt like an eternity since she’d had that. ”I think you’ll have to join a queue if that happens.” Henrik would be at the head of that queue, Maggie and the twins right behind. It was what the people who loved you would do for you. Olivia felt warmth wash through her chest, so much more than had touched her cheeks, at her friend’s words. ”Thank you,” she said softly. ”I’m glad you have too. I really do believe that it’s all gonna work out for you, Jacob and Jake.” She hadn’t always been so optimistic, but seeing how Maggie still felt added to that feeling that this town was giving back so much to the people in it that fate had seemed to snatch away.
If there was one thing she was well versed in, it was moving at your own speed. It hadn’t been instant with Henrik the moment they’d met, although those feelings had certainly been there by the time they’d parted. Both of them had needed to ease towards it before Henrik had finally made the first move. Some would’ve called it ridiculously old fashioned, but it had been right for the two of them. Hazel eyes narrowing, Olivia grinned at her friend. ”You know I’m gonna knock some sense to him if it takes him too long to realise that he really can’t live without you.” She was pretty sure that Jacob would come around to that conclusion soon enough. Nodding sagely at Maggie, Olivia held up a finger. ”That’s definitely a good sign. He wants you around his family.” That had to mean he was hoping for a future with all of them. After a moment, Olivia huffed out a breath. If Maggie dragged it out too long she’d end up organising the meeting for her. ”Stefan’s Jake’s grandfather, that makes him your family too. If Jacob drags his heels for too long you should talk to the two of them. For Jake’s sake as much as yours. You both deserve to have them around.” And she was pretty sure when Stefan heard about them, he’d make certain that he reached out.

“You didn’t see what I was like back then. My dad was sick so he kept trying to marry me off so I’d be taken care of when he wasn’t around but I wasn’t interested in any of them and I wasn’t afraid to tell them that,” Maggie laughed. “Jacob was the only one who made it all bearable and I fell for him. Now I’ve been alone for so long I don’t know how to let someone into my heart like that again,” she added with a shrug. She had known that Jacob was the only one for her back then and she still felt that way now. In all the years that had passed she had never even thought about being with someone else. The love she felt for him was a part of her and it was one that she knew was never going to change. “We’ll see. As long as Jake gets to have a relationship with his father, that’s all I can hope for right now,” Maggie admitted. Anything else would have to wait because as far as she was concerned that relationship was much more important. Jake had never known his father while he was growing up and she had always done her best to answer her son’s questions about the man as well as tell him stories about their time together but she knew that it wasn’t the same. Now he would finally get the chance to meet his father and Maggie knew that she needed to focus on that rather than anything else. “You’d better, I know he’ll hate it,” she grinned. “I’ll count on it. You’re family, we stick together,” Maggie nodded, a smile touching her lips as she caught sight of the smile that her friend gave Henrik. It had been different back then, there hadn’t been easy ways to keep in touch like there were now. Now all it would take was one text or phone call to stay in touch and Maggie knew that was definitely one of the good things about the way the world had changed. “Why do I get the feeling there’s a bit of a story there?” she added, unable to deny that now she was intrigued. She had only just met Henrik but it was clear just how happy he made Olivia and that was all that Maggie had ever wanted for her. “Thanks, I appreciate that,” Maggie said, her smile returning as she looked over at her friend. “The same goes for you, I’m here for anything you need.” Maggie hadn’t had someone like that in her life for a long time so she knew that she definitely wasn’t going to take it for granted. As Olivia said she might have to join a queue to get to anyone who hurt Olivia, Maggie couldn’t help but laugh. “Never underestimate me, Livvy. You should know that by now,” she teased. “I may be small but I am mighty. I have my ways,” she grinned. Olivia had always looked out for her and Maggie had always tried to do the same for her in return. It was true that Olivia had Henrik looking out for her now but Maggie would be right there with him. “I hope so,” Maggie admitted as Olivia said she believed it was all going to work out for the three of them. “It feels like everything has been on hold for such a long time, I’m ready to start living again,” she said gently. She had always had Jake and her career but Jake had had to leave his family behind when he became a vampire and Maggie had always done her best to put her son first and make sure that he was taken care of. It had always been just the two of them but now she really hoped that they might be able to have the chance to be a real family at last. “You joke but you might end up having to do just that,” Maggie laughed. She really wasn’t sure what was going to happen with Jacob, the moment they had seen each other again they had almost been able to fall back into old patterns again and being around him again had felt like coming home but she wasn’t sure whether anything else was going to happen there. Maggie knew that she needed to be patient, she really had dropped a big bombshell on Jacob and she couldn’t expect things to go back to the way things used to be after that but she still hoped that they might find their way back to each other sooner or later. “That’s what I thought. I’m hoping it isn’t just because I’m the mother of his son but I guess we’ll see,” she shrugged. “Stefan made it clear that he wants to get to know his grandson and he seemed interested in getting to know me as well but Damon is a lot more difficult to figure out. I get the impression he doesn’t warm up to people that easily,” she admitted. That was something that she could definitely understand but they did have both Jake and Jacob in common so she hoped that it would work out. “I really don’t want to push things though. They’re only my family through Jake and my marriage to Jacob but we have been apart much longer than we were ever together. Honestly, as long as Jake gets to build a relationship with them then I think that’s all I can ask for.” Her own relationship with them wasn’t anywhere near as important, she just needed to make sure that her son got the chance to find out about that side of his family. At a century old, Olivia felt ancient company to most. She barely looked a day older than she had been when she’d left England. Maggie probably didn’t look a day older than she’d been when she’d married Jacob either, although she had plenty of years on her. Life had seemed confining for her back in the 1940s, a century before it had to have been practically choking, especially for someone who might have wanted to forge their own path. ”Sounds like torture,” Olivia agreed, with a chuckle. ”My sisters were trying to do the same before I managed to enlist. I lost count of how many friends I got introduced to at the pub.” They’d all appeared out of the woodwork the minute George had turned up at the door. They would have done the same with Henrik, interrogating him until they worked out whether he was good enough for their sister or not. Olivia’s smile softened faintly. ”Maybe you won’t have to let anybody else into your heart again, not if Jacob does come around.” Of course, as a mother, Maggie’s first thought was her son and his relationship with his father. ”I hope he manages that,” she said lightly. Seconds later she was grinning again, swiping a finger over her heart with her promise.
Things in a supernatural world were never going to be the same as if she would’ve been human. She hadn’t been able to stay in London to watch her nieces and nephews grow up and her brothers and sisters grow old. If she had, neither her or George would have been able to remain immortal. Their lives would’ve been short, and perhaps worth it, but different all the same. A purely human life would’ve meant being able to stay put, but it also meant she likely never would have met Maggie. Her friend would’ve already have lived her life by the time she was born. Olivia knew that given the chance she never would’ve turned the clock back for that, no matter how painful life had been. There would be no Henrik, no Alice or Connor if she did and she would never wish them away. ”Always,” Olivia confirmed, her eyes still on Henrik. Glancing at Maggie, Olivia chuckled low. ”There is, but I think that’s one to save for when you come over for dinner.” AKA a story she didn’t want to tell here. Olivia returned Maggie’s smile, happy to push the grim away. ”I’m counting on it,” she assured her. As Maggie had said, they were family after all.
Olivia held her hands up at Maggie’s retort, aiming a grin at Henrik. ”I never would,” she promised. ”I don’t doubt you could kick some serious ass, especially by Henrik’s side.” Him and his family. Where one Mikaelson went to war, the others would follow and there was no Hell like the one that could be unleashed by that family. ”I know so,” she promised, humour falling away from her expression. Maggie wasn’t the only one who could be small and fierce. ”I’ve been exactly where you are. It’s not easy to start living again, but with the right people around you, it’ll get easier with time.” Her eyes were on Henrik as she spoke, her love for him shining in her eyes. He had been her reason for really starting to live her life again. Look how far the two of them had come since then.
Lifting her hands, Olivia curled them into fists, mock ducking and diving as Maggie laughed. ”Oh, it’s not just a joke. I will kick ass if I have to,” she promised. Jacob would need to have his head tested if he didn’t still love Maggie. They deserved a long happy life together, she just had to hope that Jacob would realise that. Maggie’s doubts were just like her own had been, but she’d come out the other side of them. ”I’m sure it’s not,” she puffed. ”Damon can be spiky. More so than Stefan, but once you get past his cynicism and charm, he’s a good guy really.” Damon was just one of those people whose reputation made him out to be more bite than bark – just like the Mikaelsons. Olivia’s warning finger stayed in the air, pointing at Maggie. ”If you don’t, I will. You know how sneaky and bull headed I can be. Baby momma or not, they ought to get to know you. It’s more than just about Jacob, although I’m sure he’s the most important part of it for you. Do you want me to try setting up something between the two of them? I’m sure Henrik would be happy to help.” Her gaze cut to him, her brows rising faintly. Henrik was friends with far more people in town than she was, including Stefan Salvatore.

Maggie had grown up in a completely different time even to the one that Olivia was born into and her father had wanted nothing more than to see her married before he died. Maggie knew that it had all been coming from a good place, he hadn’t wanted her to be left alone in the world with no one to look out for her but the truth was that Maggie had always done a pretty good job of looking out for herself. She had known that society would never accept her as an unmarried woman without her father around and that was what her father had wanted to avoid. In the end she had realised that Jacob was the only one for her so none of her father’s matchmaking efforts had worked out but she had still found happiness in the end, even if it was short-lived. “It was. The men were all so entitled. Some of them seemed to think that they were doing me a favour by going to an event with me, I couldn’t stand them,” Maggie admitted. Thankfully the world had changed and it was no longer like that but it had been awful back then. “That’s why I was glad to be an only child,” she laughed. She would have hated it if she’d had siblings weighing in as well, truth be told she couldn’t think of anything worse. “I hope so,” she nodded as Olivia said that she might not have to let someone else into her heart again if Jacob came around. That was what she was hoping for but she knew that only time would tell. “So do I. I told him so many stories about his father but I know Jake, he’ll want to see how many of them are true.” Maggie had always done her best to compensate for the fact that Jake had grown up without his father and she had tried to be there for him as best she could but now the two of them had the chance to finally get to know each other once Jake arrived in town and she told him and she hoped that it would all work out for them. A smile touched Maggie’s lips as Olivia said that they were always going to be family. They’d looked out for each other in the past and now they were living in the same town again, Maggie knew that they would be looking out for each other once more. Maggie hadn’t grown up with any siblings like Olivia had but she considered Olivia her sister and Maggie knew that she would do anything for her. As Olivia confirmed that there was a story behind the look but then said that it would have to wait until she came over for dinner, Maggie studied first Olivia and then Henrik carefully for a moment. It was clear that whatever it was that Olivia had to tell her it wasn’t something that she wanted to do here so Maggie soon nodded. “Alright. Just name the date and time and I’ll be there,” she promised, knowing that she would love nothing more than to catch up with Olivia again. “You can say that again,” Maggie laughed as Olivia said that she didn’t doubt she could kick some serious ass. Maggie had spent her life having to fight first for what she believed in and then to protect her son. There was no doubt that she was protective and she knew that there was no way she would be able to just stand by if something happened. “You’re more confident about that than I am,” Maggie admitted. It had come as a shock to find out that Jacob hadn’t died all those years ago after all and truth be told she was still trying to get her head around it now. She wasn’t sure what the future held for them but she hoped that this time they would get the chance to be a real family. “I know. Being in a nice place like this surrounded by good people isn’t a bad way to start,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she lifted her glass and took a sip. Catching the way that Olivia was looking at Henrik as she spoke, Maggie couldn’t help but laugh. “The two of you are sickeningly sweet, you know that?” she teased. “I’ll keep that in mind,” Maggie laughed as Olivia said that she would kick ass if she had to. So much time had passed since Jacob left and he’d said that there hadn’t been anyone else but that didn’t mean that they could just pick up where they’d left off. They were different people now and they’d spent so much more time apart than they ever had together so Maggie wasn’t even sure if a relationship between them would work if they were to give it a try now but she hoped they might get the chance to find out. “In that case I guess I’ll just have to keep chipping away at him until I see it.” That was something that Maggie had always been pretty good at so she wasn’t afraid to step up and do just that if she had to. Maggie wasn’t surprised when Olivia offered to set something up and Henrik was quick to confirm that he was happy to help as well but she shook her head. “Thank you both for the offer but I’m a big girl, I can handle it,” she assured them gently. “To be honest I’m still trying to get my head around all this myself.” As long as Jake got to build a relationship with his family then that was the main thing and if Maggie got to have one with them too then that was a bonus. Olivia made a low sound of understanding in her throat at Maggie’s explanation of how things had been for her as a single young woman. A wry smile touched her lips. ”It sounds like times honestly didn’t change that much. There were still plenty of entitled pigs in my time, although most of the ones around our way were too scared of my brothers to do much more than try and buy me a stout or two.” The Ashbys came as a pack, taking up practically half of the Plimsoll when they’d all been in for a drink. Anybody who wanted to join the family knew they’d have to get past the gauntlet of all of them and most knew they wouldn’t make it. Laughing softly, Olivia shook her head at Maggie. She could have been an only child before Florence had taken her in, she supposed, but she wouldn’t have known it. All she’d ever knowingly had around her was that big loud, beautiful family that she still sorely missed. ”You don’t know what you were missing out on.”
Undoubtedly not having blood family to stand in the way would make things easier for Jacob if he did decide to try again with Maggie – he just had her to contend with instead. ”He will,” she promised as her friend spoke about Jake wanting to find out how many of the stories he’d heard about his dad were true. There was no doubt in her mind. Jacob had been gone for a long time, but knowing that he had a son would surely help to bring him around. She’d work her magic too, charming Jacob if she could with stories about Maggie, happy to reel him in so that Maggie got a chance at happiness the same way she had. The story of just how she’d met Henrik would be told over dinner, every difficult and incredible moment of it. ”How about next Monday?” Olivia asked, glancing back over at Maggie. Mondays were one of their quietest nights. She could get Raik and her other bartenders to cover for a few hours while she took a night off to be with her family.
Pride in her friend shone in Olivia’s smile. She knew what it was like to have to go on, believing that you’d lost the person you’d loved forever. It took a strength most couldn’t imagine and struggled to find within themselves. ”Of course I am,” she said lightly when Maggie said she seemed more confident than she was. ”I know you, and I know what you would do for Jacob and Jake.” A mother’s love was fierce. Sweeping a look around her bar, at her husband to be, Olivia made a low sound of agreement in her throat. ”Speaking from experience, it’s the best way to start. It gives you solid ground to build your life on.” And when you had someone holding your hand the whole way, you knew there was a good chance you wouldn’t fall. Henrik had been that hand for her and love for him filled her as she looked at him. Colour slipped into her cheeks at Maggie’s laugh. She slanted a look at her friend. ”We do our best,” she chuckled. If there was any real karma in the world, Maggie would get to be this happy with the love of her life too.
Hard work was never something she’d shied away from and it wouldn’t happen this time either. If she had to, she’d push, cajole and forth Jacob to see sense if she had to. Shadow boxing for a moment, Olivia winked at her friend. Somehow she doubted she’d have to go that far. ”I can make sure he doesn’t run away while you’re doing it,” she promised. Somehow she doubted she’d have to though. Damon might have a reputation as an asshole, but when it came to his brother, it seemed as though he’d do anything – including accepting Stefan’s kid and grandkid into his life. Olivia smiled at Henrik as he agreed to help with it all. Her finger dropped, her hand extending to settle over his again. ”Even big girl’s need their friends for support sometimes. You know if you ever need to talk through it, you have both of us here. Henrik’s seen more than either of us might’ve been able to imagine.” Olivia glanced down at Maggie’s glass. ”How about another drink?” They had plenty to catch up and not all the weighty stuff either.
