He could’ve been alone in the hotel. The small sounds of life had been snuffed out entirely by the soundproofed walls and floor he’d sprung for when he’d refurbished The Grey Haven before opening it. Floors below his guests carried on in their little daily rituals, showering, working, talking on phones, or preparing for dinner out in a town that had its fair share of evening entertainment for its size. They had no clue what was going on in the penthouse and he didn’t particularly want to imagine too deeply what was going on with them. While they came in handy on occasion Grey had no use for them now. His focus was elsewhere.
The bowl, the blade, the herbs already burning at his side, filling the air with an acrid smell. The diaries he’d dragged world wide with him sat next to them, the oldest spread open, pages yellowed and curling at the edges. The old iron gall ink almost indecipherable in places. No names, no places, nothing that simple but there were still ways to try. None of worked before but he’d never been so damn sure he was this close before. This was all or nothing.
Maybe his swan song.
Grey dipped his head, reaching for the athame that he’d set down on the altar he’d set up in the second bedroom of his penthouse suite. He held both hands over the bowl, the candlelight glittering on the athame he held in its right. Like gold dripping from its tip down into the ingredients for the spell already clustered in that dark bowl. He’d never learned Latin at school, or from his father’s lips but it had come naturally to him all the same.
Gritting his teeth, Grey slashed the athame blade over his palm, letting blood pour down into the bowl. He set the athame aside, reached for the smouldering cord he’d set aside and tossed it into the bowl. In the mix of blood and other ingredients there was a flare of light. The silver wire he’d twisted into the shape of the sigil, supposedly of the family who had damned his own according to the diary it had been drawn in, rose to the surface in the bowl, burning with an angry red-gold light. Flaming. To sear into the flesh of the one who had damned the Maddox line.
Grey lifted the burning herbs, leaned down and blew that smoke over the bowl. It drifted rapidly across the room to the open window, flooding out in thin tendrils, searching through the night in Mystic Falls for the one he was looking for, the one he needed to kill. ”Burn baby burn,” he murmured. Lifting the bowl, he blew the smoke away from it, then set it down again with hi a hiss. ”Shit.” He turned his hand over, studied the fresh line streaming blood. In a few days another silvery wound would line his palm, like all the others but for now this was gonna be a pain in the ass.

For a long time Danny had worried about just how much things might change after graduation. He and Riley could have ended up going to different schools to each other and to their friends and they could have drifted apart. It was something that probably happened quite often and Danny had known that it was a possibility. He had been accepted into a few of the Ivy League schools and he had thought about going but in the end he had realised that he hadn’t wanted to leave everyone that he cared about behind. Whitmore was a good school and it was one that Riley had been accepted into as well so it had worked out for all of them. Danny knew that they could have made it work and he wouldn’t have been surprised if Riley had decided to follow him if he had decided to go to a different school but this was the right thing for all of them and in the end even Danny’s parents had seen that so he knew that he couldn’t ask for anything more. On a personal level it probably would have been safer for him to get out of Mystic Falls after Terra’s vision, at prom she had seen something that had obviously scared her and she had told him to keep Riley close because it wasn’t safe for him to be alone. Danny hadn’t told Riley about that until Terra had told Riley more about the vision and since then they had been trying to figure out what it meant together. Danny had found some journals that talked about a threat to their family and he had since learned that that was why his parents had decided not to follow in the footsteps of their own parents and become druids but they had yet to find anything that indicated who was after them, or in particular who was after him. Danny was used to being the one who helped his friends when they were in danger, he wasn’t used to being the one in danger himself. He knew that this time it was his turn to lean on his friends but the truth was that he didn’t want them to worry about him so he was putting on a brave face. He wouldn’t be surprised if those in the pack who knew him better were able to see right through it but it was important to him not to show any sign of weakness so he was doing his best to stay strong. Lately a lot of his time had been spent trying to find out more about what was going on but that day he and Riley had decided to take a break and they were settled on the sofa at Riley’s making out instead of watching the film that was playing in the background when Danny felt a pain in his lower torso. Unable to stop a cry from escaping his lips as he felt like a section of his skin was quite literally on fire, Danny pulled away from Riley and lifted his shirt. Sure enough a section of skin looked red hot and it hurt like hell. “What the hell?” he breathed as the red glow started to fade and only a scar was left behind. He recognised the pattern, none of the journals had said exactly what it meant but Danny knew that it was a sign that whoever had been targeting his family was after him next. Don’t leave Danny on his own. Terra’s words had been a constant mantra in his head since his resurrected best friend had found him in the woods and in the midst of their baring their souls to one another had told him that his boyfriend was in trouble. Pinballing around every time he gave his mind room to think, the last thing on his mind at night, the first thing to come clearly to him in the morning. Even as they slept in the dorm he’d constantly feel on guard. Hair on the nap of his neck standing on end, constantly in a state of watchfulness. God it had been tiring at times but Riley knew he couldn’t let his guard down for a minute. He’d done it once and had found himself in a freaking tomb with a baby vampire, waiting to be sacrificed by a maniac. There was no way in hell he could lose Danny, to stand there and watch the life go out of his eyes.
It had left him trailing Danny almost constantly, making sure that if he couldn’t be there someone else would be. He had a feeling that Danny wasn’t trying to downplay how worried he was, especially for the pack, but he saw right through it. They were both scared to death about this. They’d hit the books, tried to call in every bit of knowledge and still it felt like they didn’t know a thing.
Riley trailed his fingers lightly up and down the back of his boyfriend’s neck, tracing the line of the fine hair there. His legs were tangled with Danny’s, stretched out full length on the couch as the film they’d forgotten about the minute they’d started making out played in the background. A low hum sounded in his throat, his lip’s curving against Danny’s as he snaked his other arm around his waist. Thank god his parents were in Georgia somewhere, unlike to walk in the door. His parents had met Danny after the prom, his mom had been cooler with the whole thing than he’d ever imagined but he still waited for that sudden sharp look in his mom’s eye as she focused in on this sort of thing.
The yelp from Danny had his hands falling away in an instant, blue eyes shooting open, going wide. He tilted his head, shooting a look around the door as if he was going to have summoned up his mom with just a thought. Danny was pulling back though, fingers curling into the bottom of his shirt to lift it. The skin almost looked like it’d been branded, red and angry, obviously agonising. Riley scrambled back, digging his elbows and heels in to the sofa cushions until he was out from under Danny.
Blue eyes dragged from Danny’s stomach up to his face, his hands held out slightly. He’d learned to control his werewolf side. It had taken months after he’d arrived, working with Scott, working with Danny to figure out how in the hell to hold back his natural inclination to freak the hell out. ”I didn’t do that did I?” he asked breathlessly, looking down at his hands to make sure he hadn’t wolfed out the moment his brain had started to drift through the kiss. No, normal human hands, a little shaky as he let his fingertips hover over the skin. It almost felt like he could feel the heat from there, although that sensation faded as the glow dimmed and flesh scared pale was left behind. ”It looks like there’s a pattern to it,” he muttered before he shook his head. ”What is that?” His heart continued to pound in his throat as he touched his fingers lightly to Danny’s skin. Was this the start of it? What Terra had warned them about? God, he needed to call Scott, Stiles, Stiles had to know about this, everything always seemed to be locked in that scattered mind of his.

Danny couldn’t deny that he liked the fact that Riley had his place to himself as often as he did. He liked the other boy’s parents but some time alone was often what the two of them wanted and thankfully they were able to get it without any interruptions there. The two of them shared a dorm at Whitmore but sometimes a change of scene was exactly what they needed, especially right now. Danny had been doing his best to keep how worried he was from his friends but he was pretty sure that Riley saw right through it. Terra had told Danny that someone was coming after him while they were at prom and for a long time nothing had happened so he had found himself starting to hope that perhaps she had it wrong after all but after digging through some of his family’s old journals he had found writings from his ancestors about a curse that had plagued their family for generations. It was why his parents had turned their backs on their druid heritage before he was born, they hadn’t wanted to fall victim to the curse the same way that so many others before them had. Danny had heard a little about it from his parents but he knew now that they had tried to protect him from the worst of it so that he wouldn’t be deterred from helping his friends. Deep down Danny knew that it wouldn’t have made a difference anyway, Scott and the others had needed help and considering Deaton had decided to stay in Beacon Hills Danny had known that it was time for him to stop standing on the sidelines. He didn’t regret his decision one bit but he knew that it had made him vulnerable to the same curse that had already wiped out some of his family and the fact that Terra had seen something like that in his future scared him despite how hard he tried to hide it. A distraction was exactly what he needed right now and as he sat making out with Riley, the movie that they had put on forgotten the moment they had hit play, he seemed to have found just that. They were tangled together on the sofa when the burning sensation began and Danny immediately pulled away, lifting up his t shirt in time to see the mark being burned into his skin. The pain was excruciating but he still managed to shake his head as Riley asked if he had done that. “No, this wasn’t you,” Danny hissed, his eyes closing involuntarily as the pain continued for a little while longer before it finally started to subside. Opening his eyes as Riley said that it looked like there was a patter to the mark, Danny looked down and studied it carefully for a moment. “You’re right,” he admitted, wincing slightly as Riley touched his fingers to the still tender flesh. “I’ve seen this before,” he said as he grabbed his phone and scrolled through the gallery, only stopping once he had found what he was looking for and holding the phone out to Riley. “That’s was drawn in the journals. All of my ancestors that died had the same mark,” he said, the colour leaving his face as the reality of the situation dawned on him. “Terra was right, I’m next.”RILEY PARKER

They were meant to have left all of this behind. The moment he heard Danny yelp Riley had found his heart jumping up into his throat, fluttering like at trapped bird as he scrambled up. He hadn’t forgotten what Terra had said, hell, it had prayed on his mind every time he let his thoughts drift but some part of him had hoped that not everything Terra saw came true. It didn’t matter that she’d witnessed her own death or seen his. He’d desperately wanted her to be wrong about Danny. After everything they’d been through this was meant to be their time to be together, to be happy without a dark cloud constantly floating over their heads. Maybe the knot in his gut had loosened slightly in hope as the months had rolled past with nothing happening but now it was tight and painful, the ache rising up into his chest as he saw the mark seer its way across Danny’s skin.
He hissed out a breath of his own as he looked up at Danny, his hands hovering like he wanted to touch but couldn’t. Red and angry, just looking at it made his own gut hurt like the mark was echoed there. Fear rolled through him, probably radiated from his skin like a bad smell. The wiser part of his mind had known he hadn’t been the one to do it but the question had rolled out anyway. Riley swallowed hard, his hand drifting to the back of Danny’s head again, his fingers sneaking in to knot with Danny’s, letting him squeeze the pain away if he had to. He could take it, far more easily than his non-shifter boyfriend. Broken fingers would heal almost in an instant for him, what marked Danny’s stomach looked like it would scar. ”Thank God,” he breathed, touching his lips to Danny’s forehead. If he had he couldn’t have forgiven himself.
They remained there for what felt like an eternity before he felt brave enough to gently trace his fingers over it. Riley curled them away from it as Danny looked down it and winced. He settled his hand on Danny’s hip instead, frowning as he looked from the mark up into his eyes. ”You’ve seen someone burned like this?” he asked. Jesus. He shook his head, staring down at it before Danny held his hand out. He reached up with his other hand, taking the phone to study it before Danny’s admission that all of his ancestors who died had the same mark.
What. The. Hell.
Riley shifted backwards again as the phone thudded down on the couch. He felt cold and clammy, his hand shaking gently as he dragged his hand down the lower half of his face and stared at Danny over the top of it. ”No, you’re not,” he said firmly. ”Whatever’s happening here, we’re gonna stop. We’ve got Terra and the pack. Someone’s gotta have some clue about this and how to stop it.” His heart felt like it was lodged in his throat as he reached up to cup Danny’s cheek and draw his gaze to him. ”We’re gonna work this out, I promise. I can’t lose you.” His throat ached with the admission, his eyes squeezing shut as he leaned in to kiss Danny fiercely. Scott, Stiles, Terra, they had to tell somebody about this, get them working on some way to stop whatever it was now that they knew how it started.

Danny had grown used to the way that things were in Mystic Falls. There never seemed to be a dull moment, there always seemed to be something going on and there also often seemed to be some kind of threat in their lives as well. Normally it was another member of the pack in danger and whenever that happened Danny always did his best to help but the truth was that when it came to himself he didn’t like asking for help if he could avoid it. He had kept Terra’s prediction to himself for a long time after prom and the only reason he had broken that silence about it was because she had said something to Riley about it as well. Danny had known that he should have confided in his boyfriend about it, after all he kept telling Riley that he could talk to him about anything but the truth was that Danny hadn’t wanted to scare him. Riley went through something awful during the ritual and even though that was years ago he hadn’t wanted to be the cause of all of those memories coming back. Riley was in a good place and so were all of their friends so he hadn’t wanted to be the one to burst that bubble but now it looked like he no longer had a choice. The mark had been burned into his skin somehow and he could already see how worried Riley was. That was exactly what Danny had wanted to avoid, Riley had so much going on in his life already and the last thing he had wanted was to add to it but if he was honest he was glad that Riley was there with him. Riley’s hand found his own and Danny squeezed his hand tightly as a wave of pain washed over him. There was no way that the mark was caused by Riley, this was something else entirely. Even moving the wrong way hurt at the moment, the mark literally branded into his skin in a way that he didn’t doubt would scar. He had no idea how it had happened but he recognised it straight away and he nodded as Riley repeated what he’d said, the colour draining from his face as he recalled the warnings in his ancestors’ journals. Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Danny showed Riley the photo and his reaction pretty much summed up how Danny felt in that moment. “I don’t know about that, my ancestors have been trying to find a way to break our family’s curse for generations,” he breathed. He hadn’t wanted to believe it when Terra had said that he was next but he had started looking into it and the more he had found the more it had terrified him. As the months went on and nothing happened he had found himself starting to wonder if perhaps she was wrong and he wasn’t next after all but now it looked like she was spot on after all and that scared him more than anything. “Do you remember I said that my parents didn’t want to embrace their heritage?” he asked, hoping that Riley would remember even though it had been a long time since he had filled Riley in about that. “This is why. They lost family members they care about to the curse and they thought that by turning their backs on it then it wouldn’t affect them,” he explained. He had heard about all of this before he had decided that he wanted to embrace his druid heritage so he had known what he was letting himself in for and he still didn’t regret it now. Riley’s hand on his cheek was enough to draw Danny’s gaze to him and he kissed Riley back just as fiercely. Drawing back slightly, he let his hand rest at the back of Riley’s neck and pressed their foreheads together gently. “No matter what happens I’m glad I made the choices I did. If I hadn’t then we wouldn’t have had this chance and I’ll never regret the choices that led me back to you.”RILEY PARKER

Any thoughts that perhaps Terra had been wrong, that her prediction that Danny was going to die was just a simple bad dream that had gotten caught up with all of the real glimpses of the future she had while sleeping, had disappeared in an instant the moment he’d seen the mark seared into Danny’s skin. Riley felt the marrow of his bones turn icy cold in contrast to the heat he was almost sure he would be able to feel like a furnace against his palm if he let it settle over that mark. Swallowing hard, he stared down at it, his breath hissing in and out, his eyes clouding with fear as he looked up to meet Danny’s dark eyes. This would’ve been simpler somehow if it had been an accident on his part, a nick of claws, some new werewolf thing that was going to strike him out of nowhere just when it seemed like he had a solid hold on it all. It wasn’t though, this was the moment when dread filled him as he realised that Terra really had seen something coming and he – they, the whole pack would gather together for this – were going to fight tooth and nail to stop whatever this was before Terra’s prediction could come true.
He’d died already, he’d been lucky enough to be brought back but that didn’t mean he wanted to go through what Danny had and watch the boy he loved die.
Riley made a low sound, gripping Danny’s hand tighter as the colour drained from his face. He didn’t like the change in Danny’s expression, that look in his eye that told him that he had some sort of clue of what was going on here and he wasn’t going to like it. Brows drawn together he stared down at the mark shown on Danny’s phone screen. The screen didn’t show the vividness of the mark, it didn’t reflect the pain that had rolled through Danny as it had burned its way through his flesh. ”I do,” he promised, his tone not leaving any room for argument. ”Your ancestors didn’t have me and they didn’t have the pack. You know we’re all gonna fight to stop whatever this is. Stiles…” Stiles could find just about anything, he had to be able to find something now. Terra’s warning was ringing in his ears though, pushing nausea slick and greasy through his stomach.
His frown deepened as he swept his thumb over Danny’s cheekbone. The sick feeling only growing as his gut seemed to knot up with each word out of Danny’s mouth. It seemed like he thought that this was already a done deal, that they had no way out of this. He couldn’t believe that, wouldn’t, not after everything they’d been through. ”Yeah,” he murmured hoarsely. ”I thought they just didn’t want to get involved in all the stuff that goes along with this.” With being a part of the supernatural world. Maybe there were people out there that slid through it without that world ever cutting them to the bone but everybody he’d met in it since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls had been scarred by it in some way. Riley swallowed hard, shaking his head. ”It never works that way, God do I know that. You ignore it all it does is hit you that much harder when it comes.” Maybe by turning their back on their family legacy had stopped this thing from hitting them but now it was there on Danny’s stomach.
Pouring his anxiety and his love into the kiss, Riley hung on until Danny finally drew back. He rested his brow against Danny’s, his hand sliding down to cup his jaw as Danny’s back the back of his neck. ”Hey, no talking like that,” he whispered hoarsely as he opened his eyes to look into Danny’s. ”I don’t regret a moment of it either. What happened to change me, to bring me here, to have me falling in love with you, I’m not going to regret a moment of it. I’m not going to let it go without a fight either. You can’t give up, OK? We’re going to do something about this. We’re gonna graduate, I’m gonna drag you back to the beach in Hawaii and we’re going to have an incredible life together.” He’d never allowed himself to think too far into the future but when he had it was always Danny he saw by his side.

Danny had been lucky enough to stay on the outskirts of what was going on in Beacon Hills but after learning what had happened to Allison after she died he had known that his days of staying out of it were long gone. He had wanted to help Scott and the others and the truth was that he didn’t regret that decision one bit. Moving to Mystic Falls had brought Riley back into his life and even though Riley had said that he would have looked him up in Beacon Hills Danny knew that it just wouldn’t be the same. There had been lots of highs and lows during their time in Mystic Falls together and Danny knew that he was never going to forget the look on Riley’s face the day he had died but he had been brought back and Danny knew that that was a blessing. It had given them another chance to be together and the last few years were ones that he knew that he would always cherish. He didn’t know what the future was going to hold, the pack had made some powerful friends and allies while they were in Mystic Falls and he knew that there were people out there who were capable of bringing others back to life just like Henrik and Lukas had brought Riley back but Danny knew better than to rely on that happening for him. He was a druid he had been doing his best to help the others but there was still so much more that he had to learn. He knew that the brand was a death sentence for his family but that definitely didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to stop fighting to stay with the people he loved. He could understand why his parents had decided to step away from their family’s legacy but that wasn’t him. He knew that he had done the right thing by embracing his heritage and he was going to do everything he could to stop the curse from claiming his life too. “I know but this isn’t something that Stiles can beat off with a baseball bat,” Danny said gently. He wasn’t going to stop fighting but he knew that he didn’t want Riley to live in denial of what this could mean either. Danny had tried to stay optimistic when Riley was taken and he hadn’t wanted to accept that he might lose Riley and that had made it that much worse when he had lost him. He knew that it wasn’t going to be easy for Riley to accept that he might not make it through this but at the end of the day it was a possibility and Danny couldn’t pretend that it wasn’t. “I did too. So many of our family have died as a result of this and I can see why they didn’t want to be next but they let me make my own decisions and I don’t regret choosing to be a part of this,” he explained. It was worth it to be there for his friends and he knew that he wouldn’t change it even if he had the chance. “Exactly. They were protecting themselves and they were protecting me but their choices aren’t mind and I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said, bringing his hand up to cup Riley’s cheek gently. Kissing Riley, Danny poured everything he had into that kiss and his forehead rested against Riley’s as he broke the kiss. “I’m not giving up, I will do everything I can to stay with you and everyone else but I don’t want you to live in denial either. If you do then it will only hurt that much more if something does happen to me,” he said gently. He wanted Riley to be ready for the worst in case it did happen. Danny had been living in denial ever since prom but he couldn’t do that, not now, and he didn’t want Riley to either. “I don’t want you to give up on me but you need to be ready if something does happen.”RILEY PARKER

They might have been kids still in a lot of eyes but Scott’s pack had fought off things the rest of the town, hell, the rest of the world couldn’t even imagine. Too young to be doing it mostly alone they’d done it anyway. The stories that Scott and Danny and Stiles had told him, especially Stiles, turning his blood cold and making his stomach swim. None of them had come out of it without scars of some sort or anything.
Riley pressed his other hand against his stomach as he’d squeezed Danny’s. Allison had died, the rest of them hurt, mentally broken, and yet when the next big thing stumbled into their path they’d dragged themselves up off of the floor to fight again. Maybe everything else had been tangible, visible – a monster right there in front of them to swing for – but this wasn’t. He stared down at the mark on Danny’s stomach, feeling his stomach swim now as he shook his head. ”Not yet it’s not,” Riley whispered, his jaw tight. Blue eyes lifted to meet Danny’s, sadness, fear and determination mingling in them like clouds in a stormy sky. ”I’m pretty sure he’d try though. We all would.” They weren’t gonna just sit there and wring their hands while whatever this thing was slowly took Danny from him. He loved him too much, had already fought through too much to get them here. He wasn’t about to stop now.
It wasn’t a matter of acceptance. This was about being willing to give everything you had for the person you loved. No matter what it cost him Riley knew he’d do it. Sniffing in a breath, he shook his head. Riley raised the hand that wasn’t still in Danny’s and rubbed his knuckles over his mouth. ”It might’ve saved their lives but it didn’t stop anything. If you’d known .. would you have stepped away?” He didn’t think so. Danny had been so determined to be there for all of them and use what his family had known and passed to him to stand with them against everything. Lifting their joined hands to his lips, Riley pressed them to Danny’s knuckles almost fiercely. No matter the pain, neither one of them had regretted anything that had happened.
His eyes rolled up to Danny’s as he let their hands settle and Danny raised his other to cup his cheek. Riley managed a wan smile, his head shaking slightly into that touch. ”Me either but … I wish I could’ve protected you from this.” He knew it was a wish that went both ways. They wanted to protect each other from the horrors but all they could do was ride out those vicious tides to be together. And they would be, no matter what happened, they would find a way to be together again, to get Danny back. It had worked for everybody else they had lost here. Riley lost himself in the kiss for a moment, his brow furrowing faintly against Danny’s as they settled together after. ”I won’t,” he promised hoarsely. ”But I’m going to fight this. I don’t want to lose you and I don’t want to give up on what we were meant to have now.” The fist closed around his throat as he closed his eyes for a moment. How could he close his eyes to it all now? He’d seen too much to bury his head in the sand now. ”You don’t think there’s a way to avoid this?” Riley asked hoarsely. His eyes opened, fixed on Danny’s. There wasn’t much of a question to his words. It felt like what Terra had already seen was inevitable.

Things had been going so well and Danny had actually been starting to wonder if perhaps the family’s curse might end up missing him after all considering that it had been a while since Terra had had her vision but deep down he had always known that he wasn’t going to be that lucky. He had still continued researching it all so that he could be as prepared as possible if something did happen but the truth was that he wasn’t sure if he ever would have been able to prepare himself for this. Danny knew that certain members of his family had managed to escape the curse but his parents had been so worried about it that they had turned their backs on their heritage altogether. For a long time Danny hadn’t understood why there seemed to be so much tension between his parents and grandparents but now he knew that it was all because of his. His grandparents had wanted his parents to embrace their heritage and they hadn’t liked that they’d decided not to but by the time it came to him making the same decision his grandparents and his parents had made peace with each other and they’d all made it clear to him that it was his choice and his alone to make but they’d made sure that he’d had all of the facts so that he could make an informed decision either way. Danny knew that he could have continued living his life in ignorance, he hadn’t known Scott, Stiles and the others too well but he’d still liked them and after learning what had happened to Allison he had known that he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. The brand on his stomach still hurt but he hoped that in time that would subside so until then he knew that he had to stay strong. Deep down he was terrified about what this meant but he knew that he had done the right thing by choosing to help his friends. “I know you would and I love you for it, all of you,” Danny said, bringing his hand up and letting it rest gently against Riley’s cheek as he kissed him. He knew that Riley and the others would fight for him the same way they always did but he hoped that it wouldn’t come to that. He had done his best to look out for all of them ever since he got to Mystic Falls and he knew that he didn’t want any of them putting themselves in danger for him. Riley and Erica had already died and been brought back and so had Allison – they had all been through so much and he knew that he couldn’t be the reason for anyone else getting hurt. As Riley asked if he would have stepped away if he’d known, Danny shook his head. “I did know about this when we met in Hawaii but it didn’t change me wanting to help the others,” he explained. “I’d make the same decision all over again if it meant being able to help out here the way I have done,” he added. He didn’t regret it one bit and he knew that it would have been worth it even if it ultimately cost him his life. As Riley said he wished he could have protected him from this, Danny felt a smile form on his face. “I know you do. You’re an amazing guy and I’m lucky to have you,” he said gently. It was only ever meant to be a summer romance between them but it had turned into so much more than that when they found each other again and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Neither of us are going to give up, we’ll make the most of every minute we have together,” Danny assured him. How much time they were going to have he wasn’t sure but he knew that when the time did come then he didn’t want to have any regrets. As Riley spoke again, Danny shook his head. “This curse has plagued my family for generations, if there was a way to break it then I think they would have found it by now but that doesn’t mean that we won’t try.” His family didn’t have the friends that he did so he knew that there was still hope but deep down he was doing his best to prepare himself for the worst which would see him being the one to leave Riley behind this time. Danny had no idea what would happen when that time came, he wasn’t sure where Druids went when they died but he knew that he couldn’t count on being brought back either so he had to be ready. Nobody had been there to fight for him before he’d come here and what had been just a summer fling that wasn’t meant to go any further had become a whole new life for him. In the months before the ritual Danny and his friends had taken him into their pack, helped him to get a grip on what he was, Riley had realised that the life he’d been living before wasn’t normal. Nobody should’ve had to go through life knowing that when the rug was eventually pulled out from under their feet there wasn’t gonna be anybody there to catch them. Eyes on Danny’s stomach, he knew it had never been that way for him. He’d grown up with Jackson right there as his best friend and parents who accepted him, even if they’d turned their backs on what they were.
Danny and the others had been the first to fight for him and Riley knew that now it was Danny in danger, they would all throw themselves in to help. They didn’t abandon anybody, no matter what it cost them. They were pack. They were family. Riley’s brows knitted together as he frowned, his hand coming up to cover Danny’s on his cheek as they kissed. ”We love you too, which is why we’re not backing down from this. No matter what.” Not even if they failed and Danny was … lost. Just the thought had his throat closing up, the lump in it leaving his grip fierce as he squeezed Danny’s hand. They would get him back if they had to, the same way Henrik and Lukas had managed to bring him back. Death was not the end of it in this town.
It looked like Danny had known about part of this all along. He’d known that his family had this curse above their heads and that his parents had turned their back on what they were to avoid it, but he’d … even knowing he hadn’t been able to step away when his friends had needed help. Riley’s stomach twisted at the thought but he understood. His lips pressed together, the back of his eyes burning as he dropped his hand away from them. ”If it wasn’t for you … I wouldn’t have …” he breathed. ”I’m so glad you didn’t walk away from it all but some part of me wishes you would’ve been safe. Helping us out or not.” He knew what it was like now to want to give everything you had to the people you loved but God was he feeling greedy for not wanting to lose all of this now that he had it. His smile was faint but the look in his eyes was fierce as he leaned in to press his lips to Danny’s. ”Ditto. I don’t know what I did to deserve you but I love you and no matter what happens, that’s never going to stop. You hear me?” He would fight for an eternity to hold on to this and thanks to the pack he was a fierce fighter now.
Riley huffed out a breath, slipping his arm around Danny’s waist gently. He’d tried to make sure he didn’t waste a single moment after his own death, now he was gonna work his ass off to live every moment like it might be their last. ”Fighting and living,” he promised. Opening his eyes, he looked into the rich brown of Danny’s. One brow rose, the corners of his lips quirking softly. ”Your ancestors didn’t have Stiles and the others. You’ve fought impossible odds before and beat them right? This time is gonna be no different. Should we clean that up? Does it still hurt?” The smile remained but worry edged into his eyes as he trailed his fingers back to Danny’s stomach, staying away from the edges of the brand on his skin.

Danny had known that things weren’t going to be easy when he’d decided to join the others and move to Mystic Falls but he hadn’t expected there to be quite as many ups and downs as there had been so far. It had never occurred to him that Riley might end up coming back into his life in Mystic Falls, theirs was only supposed to be a fleeting summer romance and Danny had known right from the start that it wasn’t going to last but that didn’t mean that he hadn’t wanted it to. He loved Riley and he had hated watching Riley’s plane fly away overhead from where he had been watching down by the beach. He had seen so much during his time in Virginia including Riley getting his heart ripped out of his chest. He’d had good and bad times in the town and now it looked like his family’s curse had caught up with him at last. He had known deep down that it was inevitable and his parents had tried to warn him about the dangers but he had needed to help Scott and the others no matter how risky it was for him and it wasn’t a decision that Danny regretted one bit. He hadn’t told any of the others about his family’s curse because he had known that they would try and talk him into leaving the supernatural world behind him and that was something that he knew he definitely wasn’t going to do. His friends were his family and there was no way that he was going to leave them. He could see how worried Riley was now and it was enough to make Danny’s heart ache. He never wanted to put Riley through something like this and he knew that he could try and push him away now to protect him from what was to come but he knew that it wouldn’t work. They had been through so much together and they had promised that they would always be there for each other and Danny knew that he couldn’t break that promise now. “I know you won’t and I love you for it,” Danny said, his hand resting lightly against Riley’s cheek as their eyes met. Looking down at their joined hands, Danny forced a smile as Riley squeezed his hand. He knew that Riley and the others would stop at nothing to save him but he also knew that he didn’t want them putting themselves in danger for him because he knew that he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if something happened to any of them. “You would have been fine but I wouldn’t change being there with you for anything,” Danny assured him. Riley made him happier than anyone ever had before and he was glad that he’d had the chance to experience a love like that even if it might soon be coming to an end. “I never would have been able to forgive myself if I’d left you all to it,” he admitted. He hadn’t know Scott, Stiles and the others too well back then but he had known that they’d needed help and considering that he’d kept his head down and stayed out of the supernatural drama while they were all living in Beacon Hills he had known that he just couldn’t do that again. Riley’s next words were enough to draw a genuine smile to Danny’s face and he nodded. “I do and I need you to know that I’ll never stop loving you,” he said gently. He knew in his heart that it was true, he loved Riley more than he had ever loved anyone and no matter what happened that was never going to stop. When he and Ethan had broken up Danny had lied and said that he couldn’t date a werewolf but that definitely wasn’t true. It didn’t matter to him what the people around him were, it never had, and he didn’t regret starting something up with Riley again one bit. Danny found himself nodding as Riley reminded him that they’d fought impossible odds before and won but this time felt different. He knew that he couldn’t tell Riley that, though, not now and instead he looked down at the brand that still stood out on his skin. “It does but it’ll pass,” he nodded, knowing that he hoped it would at least. “We’d better cover it up though, I don’t want to worry my parents,” he added, certain that he didn’t want to make them worry about him anymore than they already did. Danny loved him for it but he still wouldn’t want him to sacrifice himself trying to get him back. It didn’t matter that Danny would’ve given everything for him, love meant not wanting the person who held your heart to lose everything, to give everything. No matter of arguing was going to stop Riley though. He had died for just minutes and it had torn at something inside of him, left gaping wounds that Danny had helped to heal. His boyfriend had held him together through that night, the days afterwards, as he’d shattered with it. What had burned its way on to Danny’s stomach was an omen of what to come and although he’d hold him for as long as it took, Riley was determined not let Danny go through what he had. He was his mother’s son after all.
Riley’s frown eased despite the lump in his throat. His smile kicked up at one corner, along with one of his brows. A little thread of amusement after all, a silver thread to all of that darkness. ”Love me in in spite of it, you mean. I’m stubborn, Danny, there’s no changing that.” It was what had kept him on his feet, rolling with all of those punches before he’d met Danny and there’d finally been someone to lean on when the world tilted way.
He could tell there was a forced edge to Danny’s smile and that cut deep. You put a brave face on for the people you cared about but it already felt like some part of Danny was resigned to this, like there was no changing the outcome of something that had been set in stone centuries ago. Riley sniffed, the tears boiling up for a moment as he shook his head. ”I would’ve gotten through it all maybe but I wouldn’t have been anything better than fine. Not without you. We got here together, neither one of us would change that and it’ll get us through the rest.” And that was another reason why he loved Danny. That support without any expectation of there being payback for it, the whole pack was that way. ”You know that’s why I can’t just let this happen right?” Riley swallowed thickly, knowing that Danny had to know.
Pouring that feeling into his kiss, Riley felt something crack a little in a heart Danny would always hold, even if it was from beyond the other side. He let his brow rest against Danny’s, his lips close enough to his boyfriend’s that he could feel the warmth of his breath. ”I know,” he promised, his voice barely a whisper. ”I’ll never forget it, no matter what.” His entire world was in this town, so much of it in this room. So much to protect. Riley spread his hand below the brand, Danny’s body warm and solid beneath his touch. ”Is it gonna fade or is this it?” The unspoken until it happens stuck in Riley’s throat. Trying to clear it, he started to sit up, fingers carefully curling into Danny’s t-shirt to ease it down over that scorched skin. ”Is there a place to start? Some research you or your family’s done into this?” Something, anything, for him to get his teeth into so it wouldn’t feel so much like he was just going to be sitting around waiting for some darach to kill his boyfriend to make some sort of prophesy come true.

Deep down Danny had known that things were going far too well for him and his friends, Riley had been returned to them after Klaus’ werewolf side was freed and they were all getting through their time at college. They still had the hit list to contend with and some members of the pack had ended up with their names on there but for the most part they had been pretty lucky. Danny knew that he hadn’t had to join them all in Mystic Falls, it had been his choice to follow them and help them free Allison from the demon that had been possessing her but one thing he had quickly learned was that there was always something going on in the town. Danny and the others always did the best they could in order to look out for each other but this was something completely new that they were facing, something that had been killing members of his family for generations. He knew that Riley was right, they would all stop at nothing to protect him from whatever this was but the truth was that he wasn’t sure that they were going to manage it this time. “I know and I wouldn’t want to,” Danny assured him. He had known that Riley was stubborn when the two of them got together and the truth was that it didn’t bother him then and it didn’t bother him now. Danny knew that he could be just as stubborn when he wanted to be so he knew that they really were well suited. He hadn’t given up on trying to save Riley when Klaus had taken him to use him in the ritual and Riley wasn’t going to give up on him now. Danny wasn’t used to being the one that the pack needed to help, he was the Druid and he was used to being the one who tried to have all of the answers for everyone else. He knew that it was going to take some getting used to for things to be the other way around and he knew that he didn’t want to burden any of them with any of this but he also knew that he couldn’t hide it from them so he was going to have to learn how to lean on them in return instead. The way Riley sniffed and his eyes began to glisten with tears was enough to have Danny reaching for his boyfriend, pulling Riley into his arms and holding him tightly. Danny had known that there was a chance this might happen when he decided to embrace his Druid heritage but Riley hadn’t signed on for any of this and Danny couldn’t help but feel bad that after everything they had been through together he might end up being the one to break his promise that they would always be together. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for,” Danny said gently. He knew that it was true, Riley might not believe that he would have been able to get through any of this on his own but Danny knew that he would have done. He was still glad that he’d been able to be there for Riley through it all, though, and he really wouldn’t change that for anything in the world. “It will and I’m going to make the most of the time we have together,” Danny said, kissing the top of his head gently. He knew that Riley was scared and the truth was that Danny was too but he’d made his peace with the possibility of this happening years ago and if the curse claimed him like it had so many of his family before then at least he would have stayed true to himself. “I know. I never gave up on you and you’ll never give up on me.” It might only end up making the hurt that much worse if they weren’t able to stop what was coming but Danny knew that they had to try. Danny poured everything he had into the kiss the moment his lips met Riley’s and his hand came to rest against his boyfriend’s cheek. “I hope that’s true. No matter what happens I’ll always love you and you’ll always have the memories we made together.” That much he was certain about and he wanted Riley to hold onto that even if they weren’t able to break the curse. Danny didn’t want to leave Riley or any of the others but he needed Riley to be prepared just in case. He wasn’t sure what would happen if he died, Riley was a werewolf which meant that he had ended up on the Other Side but Danny wasn’t sure what happened to Druids and he didn’t really want to find out either. “I’m not really sure. The journals only talked about the mark appearing, apparently it only disappeared after my ancestors died.” Whether it would fade a little or not he wasn’t sure but he knew that he didn’t want to risk his parents seeing it and worrying about him so he had to do something with it. Wincing as the material of his t shirt touched the scorched skin, Danny took Riley’s hand in his gently. “I’ve poured over my family’s journals so many times but I couldn’t see anything that might help. Perhaps if we look together we’ll find something though,” he suggested, knowing that that was as good a place as any to start. “Other than that I’m not really sure, I’ve tried looking in the library but I don’t have much to go on. I might have to try calling my grandparents to see what they know although how I’ll ask without letting them know about this I have no idea,” he breathed. “No matter what I don’t want my parents to know, not yet.”RILEY PARKER

Love and acceptance had been thin on the ground before Hawaii. His parents weren’t capable of it in the way that others were and in the years since he’d had first taste of it Riley had accepted that. In their own way they loved him but it was never gonna be the same way that most parents did their children. It wasn’t in the way that made his heart swell up in his chest or gave him the courage he needed when things started to get rocky and he was sure it was all going to crumble again. Danny had given him all of that from the start, getting him through more than he had ever thought he was capable of. Because of him he could fight whatever was trying to take the man he loved away from him. Whoever was trying. None of them would just sit by and let some other powerful lunatic try and shatter the heart of their world. Danny knew that too.
Riley smiled tightly at Danny’s assurance, fingers squeezing lightly. That stubbornness was sure as hell going to get them both through this. The optimism he hadn’t had until – crazy as it seemed – he’d been bitten would keep them afloat in all that dark water. The pack coming together in the way it had done every single time trouble had come looking for them before. It was an unstoppable force, and he knew that deep down inside Danny had to know that, even if every attempt his ancestors had made at defeating this thing had failed before. An unstoppable force against some big, bad, mysterious evil, he knew which one he would put his money on.
But.
It was that little voice in the back of his head, the reminder of all that had happened and what he’d been held through, that could erode all that certainty. The tears started to build and Riley kicked himself for letting it happen. Danny was the focus here, the one with a burning brand stamped across his skin. Riley buried his face in Danny’s throat, held on as fiercely as he dared until he started to feel something steady inside of him. ”Maybe,” he breathed against Danny’s skin. He pressed his lips against Danny’s throat, his eyes slipping shut for a moment. ”Sometimes it just hard to keep that certainty up, especially when what you thought you had is getting tugged out of your hands.” The fight would slow it at least, he told himself, he wasn’t losing Danny now. Riley let out a watery huff of amusement. ”If you say we’ll put a bucket list together I’ll kill you myself,” he promised, the tears breaking on a laugh. Hie eyes still burned but he sucked in a breath and raised his head to meet Danny’s eye. ”Never.” Another promise, this one he intended to keep.
That forever they should’ve had – were going to have – bled through their kiss. It was like a balm, loosening the first that had tightened around his throat as they’d spoken. ”Wherever you end up, whenever it happens, don’t ever forget them. Don’t forget how much I love you, how much I’m always going to love you.” He’d say it aloud a hundred times a day if they were separated because in their world death didn’t always mean you were cut off from those you loved. If he had his way it was going to be decades before either one of them had to worry about that. They had some place to start with their fight against this at least. Riley nodded slowly, spreading his hand lightly on Danny’s abdomen like he was shielding the brand. ”Then you’ll be the first we get this off of,” he said firmly. A deep breath and Riley started to really seal over the cracks in his heart. ”Let’s … let’s do that then. We make notes, we see what they maybe didn’t do and we start there. I’m sure they’d want to help, even if they’re afraid of this. Are the journals here?” His family would be terrified, the same fear that had gripped him tearing at him, more even. Their family had suffered through this before and they shouldn’t have had to again.
