Things with Damon were going much better than Claire had ever thought they would. The two of them had ended up getting off to somewhat of a rocky start, after all he had confessed that he had feelings for her while he was dying from a hybrid bite and after that he hadn't said a thing. Claire had known that she could have broken the silence but she had given Damon the chance to forget about everything that he had said that day and she had honestly thought that he had wanted to take it. The dinner he had arranged had completely taken her by surprise and since then the two of them had been spending more and more time together. They had been on a few dates since then and she didn't regret her decision to give him a chance one bit. For the first time in a long time she was happy, she had a job she loved and an amazing partner in Ares and she had found her family in Stefan and Damon. She couldn't shake the feeling that she could handle just about anything that life threw her way and even though she had felt a little apprehensive about returning to Mystic Falls given just how much she had changed since she had been there last. As it turned out it was the best thing that she could have ever done and she knew that she wouldn't have it any other way now. There were hunters in town and there seemed to be a new threat for them all to face pretty often but it was definitely worth it. That day she'd had what felt like a long shift but Ares had made it bearable. The two of them were a good team and they had been able to tackle every call that came in but she was still glad when their shift came to an end. The two of them quite often headed out for a drink after work but that evening she was going to be spending some time with Damon and she headed home to get changed. They had been on a few dates and he hadn't seemed to lose any interest like she had thought that he would. Claire had made it clear to him from the start that she wasn't like the other women that she had been with in the past, that she wasn't going to just become another notch on his bedpost but she had seen a different side of him during those dates and the Damon she had been seeing more of was one that she truly liked. The two of them often ended up going out for the evening but that day she felt like staying in so despite the fact that she had dressed up and told Damon that he could come over when he was ready she had ordered takeout and picked up a couple of different bottles of wine so they could have a night in instead and if that ended up leading to something more then Claire knew that she was finally ready to be open to it. Who would’ve thought he had a hybrid bite to thank for anything. Staring death in the face that day all he’d seen was a future robbed, pretty damn ironic considering that he’d hated the idea of a future at all after Stefan had forced him to complete his transition. Then he’d been staring down an eternity without Katherine in it. Now that felt like it would’ve been a damn blessing. His eyes had been opened to who Katherine truly was long before Klaus had bitten him to force his bromance with Stefan back into life. She’d never loved him, he’d just been a pawn for her. Someone to cast aside on a whim. A cat with a mouse, toying with the idea of letting it get away or slamming her paw downstairs. The poster child for dysfunctional relationships.
It might’ve taken the bite to convince him to cast the rest of the scales from his eyes, to admit to things long buried. He’d give Klaus’ brutal methods plaudits for that at least, and himself a bigger round of applause for following through on what he’d admitted in those long minutes they’d spent waiting for Stefan, with the poisoning worming its way closer to his heart. Damon knew he could’ve bugged out afterwards, feigned poison induced amnesia, but that would’ve been cowardice and that wasn’t him anymore. He’d taken that first step, convinced Claire to give him a chance and they hadn’t looked back.
Of course it meant putting up with her partner, Damon thought as he pulled up in front of Claire’s apartment building, but he and Ares had started to tolerate one another. For Claire’s sake, they both swore that. She was their buffer and maybe, maybe, the guy wasn’t as bad as he’d first painted him to be. He’d made it clear he’d crack his skull like a watermelon if he hurt Claire but that wasn’t going to happen, not if he had any say in the matter. This wasn’t a flash in the pan, he wasn’t about to toss Claire aside out of boredom the way he had so many others. It was progress, right?
Leaning against the wall next to the intercom system Damon thumbed the buzzer for Claire’s apartment. He tipped his head back against the wall, blue eyes climbing the brick wall towards the window he knew belonged to her apartment from those nights he’d spent sleeping over here instead of at the packed boarding house. Sleeping in the strictest of terms. Claire had wanted to go slow, to not just become another notch on a bed post she knew was likely liberally decorated with them. He’d been happy to oblige, tumbling into things without a second thought hadn’t once worked out well for him. As the intercom burst into life, Damon turned his head towards it smirking. ”Delivery!” he chirped. ”One charming man here to ply his….” At the sound of the door buzzing open Damon snorted. Cut off mid-spiel. A little harsh. He started inside though, trotting up the stairs instead of blurring up them … just in case. He slowed as he reached the top, his grin growing as he saw Claire at the apartment door. ”You didn’t let me finish …” he teased. Swaggering forward, he murmured a greeting before settling his mouth against hers. Now that was a real way to say hello.

After a long day at work Claire didn’t always feel like going out for too long but Damon always managed to keep things interesting and it was always worth it to spend time with him. For a long time she hadn’t thought that they would be anything more than friends, she hadn’t felt ready to even think about what was really going on between them until he had shown up at the station dying from a hybrid bite and she knew that if things hadn’t worked out the way they had then the two of them never would have ended up getting together. Damon hadn’t felt ready for anything until then and the truth was that Claire hadn’t either but she had come so close to losing Damon and it had made her realise that the last thing she wanted was for something else to happen to him before they’d had the chance to explore this. For a long time after she hadn’t thought that Damon remembered what had happened but then he had surprised her once more and things had been working out for them ever since. She had thought that Damon would grow tired of taking things slow since she hadn’t wanted to rush into anything but that hadn’t happened at all and she truly was grateful for that. She hadn’t wanted to become just another notch on his bedpost but they had been spending so much time together that she knew now that what they had was real and she was finally ready to take that next step. Damon and Ares seemed to finally be putting their differences aside for her and that really did mean a lot. The two of them along with Stefan were the most important men in her life and she knew that it was important that they get along. Now things were better than they had been in a long time and Claire knew that she wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. There was always something going on in Mystic Falls but now things seemed to have settled down and they had the chance to be happy so she knew that she couldn’t ask for any more than that. Hearing the intercom, Claire made her way over and felt a smile touch her lips as she heard Damon’s voice on the other end. “Come on up,” she said before buzzing him into the building and accidentally cutting him off mid sentence. To make up for it she met Damon at the door and she couldn’t help but laugh as he teased her. “Sorry, I guess I was too eager to see you,” she said, leaning against the door frame as he moved towards her and kissed her, bringing her hand up and letting it rest against his cheek as she kissed him back. “You actually walked up the stairs, I’m impressed,” she teased as she pushed away from the door and stole another kiss before pulling him into the apartment and closing the door behind him. “What were you going to say before I so rudely cut you off?”DAMON SALVATORE

WAlmost a century and a half loving the wrong woman, wrapped around Katherine’s little finger until she’d callously cast him off. It hadn’t just set the fires of anger burning in the pit of his stomach, it’d broken his heart, not that he’d actually admitted it to any of them. They’d have seen it though, what he’d for the doppelganger always far closer to the surface than it should’ve been, its visibility warming the dead, cold cockles of Katherine’s heart he guessed. Trailing back to town afterwards he’d expected it to be brought up endlessly but those who hadn’t kept him an arm’s length with the bridges he’d burned before he’d left. Poor Damon undoubtedly burned on the others’ tongues but not a single one of them had said it. They gave enough of a damn not to poke the bone deep sore spot.
The same definitely couldn’t be said for what had started between him and Claire the moment she’d appeared in town though, a pool cue in her hand and that smirk that said ‘double dog dare’ on her lips. They’d poked about that, trying to worm news of ‘Damon’s new woman’ out of him.
Damon cast a look at the neighbours’ doors as he made way up the stairs to Claire’s as she buzzed him in. The great grandmother with honest to God blue rinse hair in 206 had stopped him on his way out one morning, a knowing smile on her surprisingly scarlet painted lips, warning him not to break that sweet girl’s heart. He’d shot her a saccharine smile back, promising to do his best, he wouldn’t have been surprised if she was lurking there again though. Just to make sure.
If she was hanging over the stairs below him he hoped she was about to keel over. Maybe not a heart attack but a little swoon to teach her not to stick her nose into things too far. He didn’t kick the door closed behind him, standing there in the frame of it instead as Claire settled against it, laughter lighting up her face. ”You just wanted to shut me up,” he drawled lightly. He cut himself off this time though, curling his fingers around her hips to draw her in against him. Damon hummed low in his throat as he slowly drew out of the kiss, turning his head to press another against the tender skin of the inside of Claire’s rest as she settled her hand against his cheek. ”It was walk or really give Mrs. Anderson downstairs a heart attack. I think she’s enjoying playing watch dog for you way too much.” Maybe she’d wired her apartment up to the intercom for Claire’s, leaping up out of her Barcalounger every time the buzzer went.
He cast a surreptitious look over his shoulder before Claire pulled him into another kiss, into her apartment. Damon turned them, letting her close the door behind them as he used his hips to nudge her up against the wall. One hand stayed at her waist, sliding around to the small of her back while the other rose to slide into her dark hair and cradle the nape of her neck. ”I was gonna offer to my ply my trade, you know, my numerous talents. Think you might be interested in a few? I don’t charge much. It’s even free to the right bidder on occasion.” Well, free to just one person. The cost of everything else was far too high for him to be willing to pay it again, after years of being fleeced by it all.

Claire knew that to most people she and Damon didn’t necessarily seem like the most likely of couples. They were complete opposites in a lot of ways but they had known each other for a long time and that was something that neither of them could ignore. Damon had known her back when she was human and they had been through a lot together both back in London and after they reunited in Mystic Falls and she knew that he, Stefan and Ares were the people who knew her the best in the world. There were plenty of people in town who perhaps couldn’t see passed the things that Damon had done after he’d moved back to town but that wasn’t her, she knew that he had been hurting and even though that didn’t mean that she had let him off the hook completely she did at least know that he wasn’t a bad person. Katherine had really done a number on him before the two of them even met and she was glad that he had finally found a way to move on from her. All Claire wanted was for him to be happy and she honestly hoped that now they were together he was. Damon’s words were enough to have a smile forming on Claire’s face. “You got me,” she grinned. She had always been the first to tell Damon when he was being an idiot before and even though that time around cutting him off hadn’t been intentional at all she couldn’t resist playing along nonetheless. Now she no longer had to worry about hiding her feelings for Damon it was so much easier for her to be herself around him and that was something that she had come to enjoy. She would be lying if she said that she hadn’t worried that making Damon wait so long before taking their relationship to the next level might make him rethink things, in the past he’d always been able to have any girl that he wanted so she knew that he wasn’t used to waiting but he had respected her desire to take things slow and make sure that this was right before anything else happened. They had admitted how they felt about each other in the heat of the moment while Damon was dying and the last thing she had wanted was for him to end up regretting that or start having second thoughts. Damon had stayed over quite a few times but all they had done was sleep and Claire had needed that at the time. She hadn’t thought that she deserved to be happy after she’d had to leave her husband and children behind but now she was starting to see that this was her chance to find happiness again with someone who knew all about her past, both the good things and the bad, and she knew that she wanted to take it. Stepping closer to Damon, Claire felt a smile form on her face at his next words. “She’s harmless really, she just likes to look out for me. If only she knew the truth,” she grinned. Mrs Anderson had been lovely to her ever since she moved into the apartment building and it had definitely made things a lot easier. Pulling Damon in for another kiss, Claire’s smile widened as her back hit the wall and she wrapped her arms around his neck. “I guess that depends on which talents you’re talking about,” she said, her smile turning mischievous as she looked over at him. The reputation he’d built for himself in the last hundred and eighty years was all pervasive. Despite his attempts at times to rid himself of it, to make amends it still clung out. Dark and greasy, thickening when the consequences of what he’d done out of pure selfishness, want and love for someone who hadn’t deserved it in the first place were shoved in his face. Damon Salvatore, ready at a moment’s notice to put what he wanted ahead of everybody else. Didn’t matter to some that he was a reformed man, or at least a semi-repentant one. Just that past. That wasn’t the guy that Claire saw when she looked at him though, one of the small number who didn’t condemn. The old folks in her apartment building who didn’t see this town’s underbelly or Claire as anything other than the sweet young deputy didn’t either, not because of his reputation at least. He was just the guy possibly taking advantage of her.
Liberties at least, his favourite sort.
He growled faintly, playfully at her words, drawing her in to kiss that grin off of her face. It wouldn’t have been anything as malicious as that. Never was between the two of them. A chance for a joke now instead. Damon drew back slightly, blue eyes crinkling at the corners as he mock narrowed them at her. ”I’m gonna have to talk all night to make up for it now. Fair play and all.” A hollow threat. He never felt like he had to fill that silence with Claire. They’d slipped into it after he’d been healed by the vampire bite, had been comfortable in it ever since. It might have taken them time to get from that holding pattern to this but he hadn’t been willing to put what he’d said in the middle of that grim fever aside.
Maybe it was the best decision he’d made in a long time. What he did know was that this wasn’t something he’d ever imagined after Katherine had revealed her lies and torn his heart out bloody and raw. Two different worlds, ones that didn’t belong in the same sphere as he joked like this. Damon’s brows rose, that devilish glint in his eyes there in his eyes as he let Claire tug him into the apartment. ”What, that you’re the one corrupting me? I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t believe me even if I tried to tell her.” It was six of one and half a dozen of another. Claire being the one to lure him in back in London over a century ago. Her voice, her presence palpable up on the stage in the music hall. A siren that he’d learned was just as impossible to resist now.
Damon nudged her out of the way of the door, into the wall next to it as he proved he wasn’t entirely innocent in this. He dipped his head, her arms wrapping around his neck as he did so. Dark lashes fluttered, brushing against her cheek for her moment as he drew back from where he’d been about to drag kisses up to her ear. ”You say that like you haven’t seen most of them already,” he managed, snorting faintly. ”I’ve got a few. Cordon bleu chef, top masseuse, excellent cushion, got the perfect thighs for it if you want to check them out over American Idol later. Best boyfriend in the universe. I think you gave me that one?” Something that would’ve had half the chins in town dropping. This wasn’t the him who’d arrived a couple of years ago determined to burn everything Stefan tried to do here to the ground. That Damon was long gone.

When Claire first made it to Mystic Falls and ran into Damon at the Grill the truth was that she had never thought that this would end up happening. She had a history with the Salvatore brothers, that much was true, and after having to leave her family behind they were the last people who knew who she was before she became a vampire. For a while she had thought that becoming a vampire was a curse and in a way it was because she’d had to leave behind the life with her family that she had always wanted in order to protect them but she didn’t feel that way any longer. Damon had always annoyed her and the two of them had butted heads quite often but at the end of the day she knew that that was probably because they were too similar at times. It had taken her a while to realise that she felt more for Damon than just friendship and it had taken her even longer to accept that but now she was glad that she had done. She had come so close to losing him but the truth was that she made him happy and she hadn’t felt truly happy around anyone in a romantic sense for a long time. She had her partnership with Ares at work which she absolutely loved but she had been missing something more from her life and she had found that in the unlikeliest of places but she knew that she certainly wasn’t going to argue. It had been a long day so Claire didn’t feel like going anywhere that evening but she knew that she definitely wasn’t going to miss the chance to spend some time with Damon at her apartment. As he said that he was going to have to talk all night to make up for her cutting him off with the intercom, an amused smile formed on Claire’s face. “Knock yourself out, I learned to tune you out years ago,” she teased. She knew that it was a threat that Damon would never follow through with, they were both completely comfortable around each other and that was something that meant a lot to her. It had taken them a long time to get to where they were but they were happy and she knew that she wanted that to last for as long as possible. Neither of them had had it easy when it came to relationships but they had another chance now and for that she was grateful. “There’s no way she would believe you. As far as she’s concerned I’m the innocent young deputy living on her own and being led astray by the town’s lothario,” she said although there was no hint of malice in her words whatsoever. She knew about the reputation that Damon had gained for himself before she got to town but he really had changed and she saw that every day even if other people didn’t. It wasn’t long before Claire’s back was hitting the wall and she drew Damon closer as their lips met, her heart fluttering in her chest as they kissed. “You’ve definitely earned the best boyfriend in the universe title and I think I’ll have to get you to show me some of those talents later,” she said, bring her hand up and letting it rest gently against his cheek. This was a side of Damon that she had never expected, he hadn’t tried to pressure her and he had been content to take things slow but now she knew that she was ready to take that next step. “I actually have something else in mind that we could do tonight though,” she added, her smile returning as her eyes met his. “I’m ready to make this a sleepover that’s truly worth your while if you’re interested,” she said, pretty sure that he would get what she meant. It wasn’t as simple as a switch to flip him over from one version of himself to another. Vampires had been able to turn their emotions off from the start, a light switch in their brains. It didn’t erase your memory, didn’t even stop things from creeping back in around the edges but it gave you the ability to stop giving a damn about any of it, about anybody but yourself. Bets had been laid on whether his had been off before, Damon Salvatore, heartless as sure as if someone had reached into his chest and scooped it right out of there but the truth was his switch had always been on. Beneath that devil may care had been a heart that had still given a shit and that had been his problem. It was just well hidden visible to only a few.
Claire had been able to see it, knew when and how to knock knuckles against it then, even if his chest rang as hollow as the Tin Man’s. She could do the same now, although away from the prying eyes of a town that couldn’t or didn’t want to see the changes. That dimmer switch inside of him that let him exist in those myriad forms. The Damon still ready to snap Katherine’s neck as soon as he looked at her, the Damon who’d planned some elaborate first date with Claire more than a century after she’d started to worm her way into his life. The Damon who narrowed his eyes at her and growled lightly now.
He let out a sigh through his nose, teeth gritted in a mock grimace now as he shook his head. Tilting his head he leaned in closer, lips practically brushing against the shell of her ear. ”You sure you want to? Especially when I’m right here with it?” A quick nip of teeth against her earlobe and he was drawing back. It wasn’t innocence on his face as he let Claire tow him inside. Damon knew he could put it on in an instant if her neighbours appeared though. That choir boy look entirely covering what lay beneath at least until Claire had him laughing out loud. ”Lothario? I guess my reputation’s gotten further than I thought. Maybe I’ll have to try winning her over. A bunch of flowers, all fluttering lashes, she wouldn’t be able to help herself.” Humans were a thousand times easier to win over than anybody who had a real clue about this town. One glimpse of you at your worst and those who knew clung on to that image with an iron grip.
Baby steps, Damon warned himself as he inched into Claire again. Changing one judgy mind at a time. He’d never needed to change hers and there was an appeal in that. Laughing throatily against her lips, Damon let out a sigh as Claire brought a hand up to rest against his cheek. ”I think that could be arranged, especially if that title comes with some sort of a prize. A shiny little medal, maybe a cup to parade around town.” Outward proof of his growth. Swaying slightly against her, Damon winged dark brows as she suddenly dangled an offer in front of him. They’d been taking this slow, as she’d asked to. No just marking her up as another notch on his bed post. Mouth falling open, Damon pretended to be scandalised for a moment. ”A sleep over and I did even bring my pyjamas? What will the neighbours think.” His grin was already growing though, lips curving as he bent again. Pressing them against the side of her head then settling them against her ear and dropping his voice down low. ”I’m definitely interested,” he promised. Hands still gripping, he drew her away from the wall. Nudging her deeper into the apartment he knew there’d be no shame to his walk out of the building in the morning.

When Damon first told her how he felt about her the truth was that Claire hadn’t known what to think. After she had to compel her husband and children to make them believe that she’d died so that they would move on without her she hadn’t thought that she had deserved to be happy so she had kept to herself. Over time she had started letting people in but they were nothing more than friends and she had been fine with that. Damon had started out in the same way but deep down a part of her had always suspected that there was more than that between them. He’d infuriated her at times, he’d had a way of getting under her skin like no one else ever had and she used to keep telling herself that it was probably because they were too similar for their own good sometimes but now she knew better. She wasn’t sure exactly when her feelings for him had turned into something more but it had taken Damon almost dying for them to admit what was going on and ever since then Claire hadn’t wanted to waste a minute of their time together. She had still wanted to take it slow because she had wanted to make sure that it was right but she was certain now that it was and she knew that she was ready to take that next step. Damon had already showed her that he wasn’t treating her like he had others in the past, he had gone all out for their first date and ever since then she had seen a side of him that she had never expected. He had started really trying to be civil with Ares and he had been nothing but patient with her. She had never seen him as the kind of guy who would be happy curling up on the sofa with her in front of the television or the kind of guy who would be happy to sleep over without anything else happening but he had proved her wrong and in doing so she was pretty sure that he had made her fall for him that much more. They had never said those words to each other but she was pretty sure that that was how she felt and she was glad that they had this chance to give it a try. A sign escaped Claire’s lips as Damon’s lips brushed against her ear before he nipped the lobe and her eyes closed for a moment. “I’m sure,” she said, knowing that she had to resist even if that was the last thing she wanted right now. Damon knew exactly what he was doing but Claire never liked to make things too easy for him and now was no exception. The laugh that came next was enough to draw a smile to her lips and she shook her head in amusement at his suggestion. “Oh please, she’d eat you for breakfast,” she laughed. “She can be quite fiery when she wants to be,” she added with a grin. “It’ll take much more than that to win her over.” It had been easier for Claire, she didn’t look a day older than twenty five and she was living alone which had made the woman automatically protective of her. On more than a few occasions the woman had tried to warn her about Damon but Claire had always assured her that they were old friends and she knew exactly what she was letting herself in for but it was still good to know that she cared. Claire knew about the reputation that Damon had built for himself during his time in Mystic Falls but she had always known that there was so much more to him than that. She had seen glimmers of it back in London when they met and even though he hadn’t been ready to reveal this side of him back then she had still known that there was a good person underneath all the bravado and she had been proved right. “Maybe I should get a badge printed for you or shout it from the clock tower, how does that sound?” she teased, a smile on her face as she ran her hand gently down his cheek. Claire knew that her suggestion probably should have come later in the evening but with Damon being the way he was right now she knew that there was no time like the present. He had been so patient with her and he had seemed happy to continue waiting but she didn’t want to any longer and she was pretty sure that deep down he didn’t either. His next words were enough to have her laughing as her eyes met his. “You’ve spent so much time over here that you probably do have some around here somewhere,” she grinned. Her smile turned gentle as he kissed the side of her head before she felt a pleasant shiver run down her spine as they came to rest against her ear. “Then how about we reheat dinner later and get started now?” she suggested, giving his hands a gentle tug as she led him across the apartment in the direction of the bedroom. Slow. It had been Claire’s request when they’d tipped over into this. She hadn’t had her heart dragged around by a sociopathic vampire for over a hundred years. After they’d left her she’d gone on to find a husband she loved, she’d had kids. An entire life that hadn’t revolved around the nightmare of what had happened to her sister or what she would eventually become when that nightmare reared its ugly head again. Leaving that behind had left her floating loose in a way, tethering yourself down after that took guts. Damon knew she had them, she had to if she wanted to do this with him, but even the strongest courage had chinks in its armour and Claire was wise enough not to want one of those blown wide open by this when he inevitably screwed up.
It was impossible to say he wouldn’t, even as he took those baby steps with her. It had been his modus operandi even before Katherine had twisted his life into the gordian knot. He could fight it all he wanted but there’d always be the chance he’d take this new existence and knot it up the same way. The difference this time, Damon thought as he growled lightly against Claire’s ear was that he didn’t want to. This wasn’t happening in an attempt to screw anybody else’s life up, it was an attempt to make his own better. Dark brows rose, innocence filtering over his expression that most would see through in an instant. ”Even those firecrackers can be softened up with the right approach. What do you think? Roses? Chocolates? My eternal devotion? Little much?” He hummed lightly, his brow furrowing as he pretended to consider it. Treating Claire right he imagined would be top of the ‘accepting the guy sliding into Claire’s life’ list.
Actions spoke louder than words and bouquets ever had done. Since Klaus had sunk fangs into him he’d done his best to turn those around. This was the least of it, the moments with Claire behind closed doors – and right in front of her partner’s eyes – where he tried to prove he wasn’t just his reputation. Damon hummed lightly as Claire teased about how to announce his status of best boyfriend around town. ”You get a bullhorn and we might just be on with the clock tower,” he managed in all seriousness for a moment before his grin broke out. It’d still be met with absolutely refusal to believe it but that was Mystic Falls where he was concerned.
This – Claire wanting to spent their first night together – sure as hell would’ve been met with distrust. Warnings flying from them all not to get herself any deeper. Well, too late. Damon let out a thoughtful sound, pressing back into Claire to the wall to whisper against her temple. ”They might think it’s a little scandalous but my birthday suit might do.” For tonight at least. He’d never pushed too fast too far before but now Damon was letting himself slide down that scale, a brush of lips, the trace of them over Claire’s ear. Clever footwork turning them before she took over to lead him across the apartment. Damon’s hands gripped her hips as he slipped through the bedroom door with her. ”Someone’s impatient,” he teased lightly. ”Build up an appetite first and then celebrate with … what did you make?” He feigned interest for a moment, sniffing at the air before his fingers found the hem of Claire’s top and tipped back into what he should’ve been doing with a wicked grin.

It was strange now to think back to the time just after Klaus had bitten Damon. Back then Claire had felt sure that he’d wanted to forget about everything that he’d said while the bite was affecting him but he’d surprised her then by showing up at the station and quite literally sweeping her off her feet and he had continued to surprise her ever since then. Claire had known that he wasn’t anything like those around Mystic Falls liked to think he was, she had always seen a different side to him to the one that most others got to see and she had known that he was capable of all this and more when he found the right person but she had never thought that that person would end up being her. She had accepted that somewhere along the line her feelings towards him had become something more than friendship but she hadn’t thought that it would be reciprocated. Katherine had really done a number on Damon and Claire had encouraged him to open his heart again but there were still times even now when she had to remind herself that this was real. For a while she hadn’t thought that she’d deserved it after she’d left her family behind but thanks to both Damon and Ares she had realised that she deserved to be happy too and she knew that she wasn’t going to stand in the way of that any longer. She had built a life for herself in Mystic Falls and it was one that meant the world to her. “Maybe just a little bit,” Claire grinned as Damon asked if offering her neighbour his eternal devotion was a little too much. “You can save that for me though,” she added as she leaned forward and captured his lips in a kiss. She had been on her own for such a long time since she hadn’t let anyone else get close to her like this after she left her family behind and she was only now starting to realise just how truly lonely her life had been. She had lived her life but she hadn’t really let anyone get close to her and she knew that she didn’t want to go back to that again. There was a time when Claire was pretty sure that Damon would have run a mile at being called someone’s boyfriend but he really had changed and even though Claire knew that there were those in town who couldn’t or didn’t want to see that, she could see the changes in him and it had to be said that this Damon was definitely one that she liked. “You’re on,” Claire laughed as Damon spoke again. She knew that there were a lot of people around Mystic Falls who wouldn’t believe a word of it if she started singing Damon’s praises because he hadn’t exactly made a good impression when he’d arrived in Mystic Falls but things were different now, he was different now and Claire knew that in time others would start to see that. Stefan had definitely seen the changes in Damon and she knew that he felt like he finally had his brother back so she hoped that the others would follow. Ares would never admit that he was thawing towards Damon but she still got the impression that he was at least a little given all the time they spent together and she had a feeling that it was the same for Damon. At the end of the day they both wanted her to be happy and they were both incredibly important in making that happen. The fact that Damon had been willing to wait so long before taking their relationship further really did mean the world to her. It had been over a century since she had last done this but Damon had shown her that she wasn’t going to be just another notch on his bedpost, what they had was real and she hoped that that wasn’t going to change. “Perhaps but you won’t hear any arguments from me,” Claire said, wrapping her arms around Damon’s neck as her back rested against the wall. She was nervous about ruining what they’d built, that much was true, but she couldn’t deny that she wanted this. As they reached the bedroom and Damon said that she was impatient, Claire felt a smile touch her lips. “You’re just realising this?” she teased. “Besides, I think we’ve waited long enough. Don’t you?” Damon had stayed over on multiple occasions before but they had never done anything more than sleep and she knew that that wasn’t what he was used to but he’d kept his word about taking it slow and now Claire knew that it was time for his patience to be rewarded. “I cheated, it’s takeout,” she shrugged, her fingers entwining themselves in his hair as his found the hem of her shirt and she brought their lips together once more even as she lifted her arms over her head and helped him with her shirt before turning her attention to his own. This hadn’t been on the cards. Something that felt like a human life well beyond his grasp after Stefan had forced him to complete the transition, what he thought he was going to get with Katherine wiped out in one shocking instant when she’d supposedly died in that church. Ideas tossed aside for that bitter part of him to take over. Whatever had started to percolate in London had no chance of breaking through that. Oh how times changed though, especially when the evil bitch wearing a doppelganger’s face you’d loved tossed you aside like a rag doll. The opportunity presented by Claire after that had been grabbed like a brass ring. It was still slippery, but finding himself caught in another of her kisses it felt like his grip was surer than it had been in over a hundred years. Her fingers wrapped around his to grip tight.
His on her hips now as he winged dark brows at her. Was this how it had felt for all of them all these years? Huh. Damon nipped lightly at her lower lip, letting out a considering sound. ”So you’d want roses, chocolates and my eternal devotion huh?” The first time were easy enough, the last was still taking work. He wasn’t perfect, wasn’t ever gonna consider himself that, but he was a work in progress and Claire had been steadying his hand with that the entire time. His biggest cheerleader, ready to fight to get others to see this. He narrowed his eyes faintly at her as a bullhorn was brought into consideration of how to publicise his best attributes to the town. Huffing out a laugh, he shook his head. Her partner would crap a brick if she tried it … and then he’d likely try and arrest her for it while he called her a liar a hundred different ways.
Blue eyes had narrowed down to slits playfully as he’d pressed Claire back into the wall. They focused on her profile as he pressed his lips to her temple, then the shell of her ear, smiling against the warm, silk brush of skin and her dark hair. ”You’re just trying to seduce me,” he crooned coquettishly. It wouldn’t take much, the two of them had been creeping towards this for well over a year after all. The baby steps she’d asked for had carried them closer and closer, nights spent over without taking any further, an appetiser for the eventual maincourse.
He hummed lightly as he guided her gracefully into her bedroom. Fingers squeezed lightly at her hips as he brought her to a stop net to her bed. He hadn’t exactly wanted to get to know anybody deeply when they’d first met but Claire had worked her way in then and again when she’d found him and Stefan here. ”I think I’m just learning the depths of it,” Damon crooned. ”Can’t blame you though.” A teasing edge to his words, he was just as bad, worse depending on who you asked. ”Too long,” he breathed. Fingers brushed over her skin as they dragged her shirt off, his lips lowering to brush her newly bared shoulder even after his t-shirt got the same treatment. Bare skin coming together, a new level of shiver beneath his skin as he eased her down onto the bed. ”And there I was thinking maybe you’d spent hours in the kitchen slaving away for this. Tsk tsk. I guess takeout’s still gonna taste like ambrosia after this.” After all that lead up Damon poured the heat that had been simmering under his skin into the kiss, his body hovering lightly over hers as he dragged them both deeper. Hands, lips, heart, finally taking what they’d wanted for longer than he could’ve admitted.

Claire had been on her own for such a long time that the truth was that she had forgotten what it was like to be with someone who wanted to be with her. After she faked her own death she had felt so awful about abandoning them that she hadn’t thought that she had deserved to be with anyone else. Deep down she knew that she had done what she had done in order to protect them, she had stayed with them for as long as she could after becoming a vampire but as time went on and her husband and children started getting older it had become more noticeable that she wasn’t doing the same and others had started to notice as well. She could have told them the truth and given them the chance to join her if they’d wanted to but after seeing what had happened to Violet she had known that she couldn’t risk it. She wasn’t sure how it was determined who would become a Ripper and who wouldn’t but she had seen the struggles that Stefan had gone through and she had seen the way that her sister had become someone else entirely so she had known that there was no way that she could risk that with someone she loved. Instead she had lived a solitary existence until she had arrived in Mystic Falls and she knew that she didn’t want to go back to the way that things used to be. She had friends around her, a brother in Stefan and a boyfriend in Damon. Even now she was still surprised that Damon had been happy to take it slow but it meant the world to her that he had been. It had given them the chance to spend time together without anything else complicating things but Claire knew now that she was ready to take things further and she hoped that Damon was as well. “Definitely. Not afraid of going all in, are you?” she asked, a playful challenge in her words. She knew that the first two would be easy for Damon but after everything that he had been through the last one would be much more difficult and it was the same for her. “There’s no need to rush the last one though,” she added, bringing her hand up and letting it rest gently against his cheek. Katherine had broken his heart and Claire knew that it was going to take time for him to feel ready to let her in but she hoped that in time he would get there. As Damon said that she was just trying to seduce him, Claire let an innocent smile form on her face. “Would I really do a thing like that?” she asked, a sigh escaping her lips as Damon’s lips touched her ear. They had been moving towards this for a long time and Damon had never once tried to make her do anything before she was ready. Now she knew that she didn’t want to wait any longer, though, and as he guided her into the bedroom she knew that it was the same for him. “Well, I couldn’t have you learn everything about me straight away. That would take the fun out of it,” she said, her lips finding his once more. They had managed to get to know each other a bit back in London but back then Stefan, Damon and Violet had had to save her from Henry and Samuel and then Violet was taken by the two of them so there hadn’t been too much time to learn too much about each other. During her time in Mystic Falls it was completely different though and she was glad that they had been given another chance. “You can be just as impatient though,” she added. She had never seen Damon willing to wait for anything the way that he had waited for her and it was enough to make her see that he really did want this as much as she did. It had been such a long time since Claire had last done this but in that moment her instincts took over and she removed Damon’s shirt with ease. As his lips found her shoulder, Claire’s lips trailed over his neck and she held out a hand to him to draw him down onto the bed with her. “What can I say, it was a busy day at work,” Claire said, an easy smile forming on her face as their lips met once more and they gave into what they had both wanted for such a long time.
Once they’d finished, Claire couldn’t deny that she felt perfectly content as she laid with her head resting against Damon’s chest. Before she’d even made it home that night she had realised that she was ready to take that next step with Damon if he was but she truly was happy as she brought her hand up and traced light patterns over his shoulder. “That was definitely worth the wait,” she said as she leaned up and pressed a kiss to his lips. “No regrets?” she asked, needing to make sure given the way he’d needed to take some time after the kiss they’d shared while he was afflicted by Klaus’ bite. The question would’ve had Katherine’s eyes snapping narrow, the warm brown that had lured him in like a black widow growing cold enough to give frostbite with a single stare. All in had never been her thing, not with him at least. There was no ice in the brown eyes looking at him now, none of that cat’s paw teasing or the sharp bite of selfishness. Just warmth to the challenge he wouldn’t have been able to resist anyway. Dangle a challenge in front of Damon Salvatore’s nose and he was always gonna do everything in his power to prove you wrong. This was his proof to Katherine, the final release of the shackles he’d lived in fore over a century because of her. Freedom to hum lightly and shake his head at Claire. Damon patted her hip lightly as he looked into those velveteen eyes, the grin pulling slow at his lips. He closed that minute gap between them again, pressed his lips against the corner of her mouth before he whispered against her skin. ”Nope. You’re not gonna get rid of me that easy, even if it takes us a century to get there.” Time was the one thing the two of them had in buckets – thanks to Katherine, and the trouble he and Stefan had found in London. Dark brows hitching faintly Damon lifted his hand to grip her wrist gently. He turned his head into that touch, nuzzling his lips into her palm. It seemed that seduction was running both ways, although he was only playing coy about one. He teased, lips brushing tender spots until a sigh slipped out of Claire. Dark lashes fluttered, a contented little hum rumbling out of him as he nipped lightly at her lobe. ”Absolutely. I know your ways well enough.” Had seen them on stage and mapped them out in those months in London, had known they hadn’t changed the minute he’d seen her playing pool in the Grill. Damon made a little noise against her mouth, eyes narrowing down to slits as he kissed her. ”You’re not,” he growled into the kiss, ”half as mysterious as you’d like to think.” But she was, there were still hidden depths there and he was ready to explore. Damon shrugged, letting Claire strip his shirt away and pull him down on the bed. Impatient? Not likely but with this … he looked down at Claire, serious for a moment before he pushed away all thought of long days at work and cold noodles reheated in a microwave. There was only her as Claire dragged down into the kiss and so much more. * * * * * * * * * * Fade to Black * * * * * * * * * * Lead filled his limbs in that warm, wouldn’t to move anyway feeling. Claire lay sprawled at his side, head resting on his chest, his fingertips a slow glide up and down the dip of her spine. The only energy he had left to spend, life taking its time to seep back in through that complete white out in his head. Damon’s lips curved though as Claire brought her hand up to trail similar patterns over his shoulder. ”Good things come to those who wait,” he agreed. And they had waited, more than a century. He kissed her back lightly, lips curving before he started to chuckle. ”Nope. That eternal devotion’s looking all the more likely.” Letting his hand glide down to settle at the small of her back, he studied her face. ”You?” He’d hopped around for that century, still tethered to Katherine, unable to settle anywhere else as need and frustration remained at war inside of him. Cutting him free the way she had Katherine had just opened him up for so much more than he’d been stuck with.

“Lucky for you getting rid of you is the last thing I want. You’ve been so patient waiting for me, I think it’s time I returned the favour,” Claire said, turning her head slightly so she could capture Damon’s lips in another kiss. He had never once pressured her into doing something that she wasn’t ready for and the patience he had shown had made her feelings for him that much stronger. She was pretty sure that she was starting to fall for Damon but after trying to shield her heart from anyone for such a long time she knew that it would take a while for her to be able to say those words out loud. She didn’t doubt that it would be the same for Damon, he had been holding a candle for Katherine for such a long time and even though it had been a while since he had learned the truth, those wounds weren’t going to heal straight away. It would take time and Claire really was happy to wait as long as it took. They had been taking things at their own pace through all of this, it had taken Damon almost dying for them to admit how they felt about each other and Claire had then spent ages thinking that he’d regretted saying anything before they’d gone out on their first date. They were both vampires so all being well they had all the time in the world and Claire knew that she wanted to enjoy every minute of it. Damon’s words as he said he knew her ways well enough were enough to draw a smile to Claire’s lips. “You mean you think you do, you’ve barely scratched the surface,” she said, her tone teasing as his teeth nipped gently at her ear. She was out of practice when it came to all of this so she wasn’t sure how much more there really was left for him to find but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t still hint at it. “You keep telling yourself that,” she said, her lips brushing against his before she kissed him once more. Damon was the same, there was still a lot more to him that she had yet to learn but the truth was that she was looking forward to learning as much as she could about him. She had cared about him back in London when they’d met even though he’d had a nasty habit of getting under her skin and somewhere along the way it had turned into so much more. That was what had brought them to this point and as Damon joined her on the bed she let herself give in to those desires for the first time since she’d left her family behind and lost herself completely in the moment with Damon.
A smile of pure contentment crossed Claire’s face as Damon’s fingers glided up and down her spine and she cuddled into him a little more. She really had forgotten what that could be like and she knew that she didn’t want to wait that long again but she was still glad that they’d waited until they were both ready. After everything that he had been through and the way Katherine had really done a number on him she was pretty sure that it had done them both some good to spend all of that time together with complicating things but now they’d taken that next step and Claire couldn’t deny that she was happy that they had done at last. “You got that right,” she said, letting her fingers trace patterns over his shoulder once more before he kissed her back. His next words were enough to bring a smile to her face and she shook her head. “None at all. I’m glad we waited but after that my feelings for you are that much stronger.” A part of her had been a little worried that something might change between them but if it had then it was definitely for the better. “Thank you for being so patient,” she said, pressing her lips against his shoulder gently. She knew that it wasn’t what he was used to but he’d waited and that meant the world to her. “I get the feeling you staying the night is going to be that much more fun from now on.”DAMON SALVATORE
