It had taken him more than a century to get there. Claire had lived another lifetime in the time since London – a husband, kids, a whole existence he was still learning of in bits and pieces – his had been a single drawn out nightmare. Hoping like hell in the end that he’d get Katherine back, a heart that had still ached for her. Damon wasn’t about to fool himself, if Katherine hadn’t cut him free with that almost surgical admission he’d have spent another lifetime waiting for her. Those cold words had been heartbreak but without Katherine’s greedy fingers wrapped in an iron grip around his heart there’d been room for something else to grow. It had just been a century in the making. Damon’s lips curved into an expression barely touched with the smug. Lucky him in a lot of ways. He gave her hips a little tug as Claire teased. The patience had definitely run both ways and now he was glad it had begun to wear thing on both their parts. Lips trailing from her ear to the tender skin of her temple in a nuzzling kiss Damon hummed deep in his throat. He shook his head lightly, his lips still against the cool of her skin. ”I’ve seen deeper than that. I know you,” he promised. Claire had let him see, just as he’d let her. All those shields slowly cast aside until they’d ended up here, wrapped around each other and headed towards that something new at a slowly accelerating pace. ”You’ll agree by the time we’re done tonight.” There was a hint of arrogance to Damon’s words but he was sure he was right and by the time he padded out to the kitchen come morning, Claire was going to see that he’d cared enough to know. * * * * * * * * * * Fade to Black * * * * * * * * * * He wasn’t sure if he could see now. That had been … special. The warmth that had spread through him had left him limp as a cooked noodle, the contentment between them leaving him unwilling to even try and shake some feeling back into those limbs. Surely one day it would happen but for now he was happy to just keep up that slow glide of his touch over her skin. Damon smiled into their kiss, his hand pressing her closer for a moment. ”I told you I was gonna be right, didn’t I?” He made a little sound in his throat, pressing his mouth to the corner of hers before he settled his head back into the pillows. ”I’m glad. It would’ve been embarrassing crawling out of the apartment after that,” he teased. Damon tilted his head, acknowledging the thank you that hadn’t been needed. He trailed his fingers up to the back of Claire’s neck, gently sweeping her hair from her shoulders, curling it lightly around his fingers. Mock gasping, Damon tried to shoot her a shocked look but it was never gonna stick. ”Maybe I didn’t know you after all. Are you just after my body Officer Devereux?” Damon clucked his tongue, like he was going to argue a moment about that.

For a while Claire had wondered if this was all too good to be true, if Damon might get tired of taking things slow and end things so that he could start over with someone else, but that hadn’t happened. He had been happy taking things slow and now that they were taking things further at long last they were doing so because she had been the one to suggest it. Not once had he tried to push her and for that she was truly grateful. After leaving her husband and children behind after she became a vampire she hadn’t felt like she’d deserved to be happy after that but Damon had showed her differently and now she knew that she was finally ready to move on. Her feelings for Damon had been there for a long time, much longer than she had ever cared to admit in fact, but during the time she had been living in Mystic Falls they had only grown. She knew all about Damon’s past and so many people had tried to warn her off getting involved but the problem was they only knew the things he had done, they didn’t actually know him, not like she did. “And I know you better than a lot of people aside from Stefan and probably Ric I would have thought,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she hooked a finger under his chin and turned his head so she could press a kiss to his lips. He had come a long way from the Damon that Katherine had chewed up and spit back out again and she hoped that in time others would start to see that too but if they didn’t then it didn’t really matter because nothing was going to change her mind about this, nothing was going to change her mind about being with Damon. “In that case I think it’s about time you stop talking and show me just how well you know me instead,” she said, her smile widening as she pulled him close and lost herself in the moment.
It had been such a long time since Claire had been with anyone like that, in fact she hadn’t been since she’d become a vampire, and the truth was that she had forgotten just how good it was to feel that connection to someone else. She had never thought that it would be like this between her and Damon, a part of her had sometimes wondered what it might be like but she had quickly pushed those thoughts away. Now, though, she didn’t have to worry about that and it was a relief to say the least. She knew that she should probably get up but she was perfectly content in Damon’s arms and as he spoke she couldn’t help but laugh. “Normally I hate it when you’re right but I’ll make an exception this time,” she said, her hand sliding into his hair as he kissed the corner of her mouth. “You don’t need to worry about that, I’m completely happy here with you,” she admitted, pressing her lips gently against his shoulder. She knew that they could have just rushed into this but Damon was her friend before he became anything else and she had wanted to make sure that it was right for both of them. He, Stefan and Ares were the few people she had in her life that meant the world to her and she had known that she hadn’t wanted to rush things with Damon only to end up ruining everything. It felt right for them to take their time and she felt her smile return at his next words. “Maybe I am,” she teased, unable to resist playing along considering Damon knew that there was so much more to him that she liked than that. “What are you going to do about it?” she added, a playful smile touching her lips as her words took on a hint of a challenge. Patience was supposed to be a virtue but those had always been thin on the ground for him, practically non-existent once Stefan had forced him to transition. The process was meant to heighten everything that was always in you, turning it up to an eleven. That wasn’t why always why things got under his skin in seconds flat though. That had more to do with everybody else around him than what was inside and what had happened between him and Claire only seemed to have proved that. Damon knew he could’ve tried to push her on to a night like this and maybe Claire would’ve gone along with him because she trusted him but there’d been some sort of relief in not falling back into those old patterns. Katherine could look at this with those narrowed eyes for some lie, but she wasn’t gonna find it. She’d never known what was really under that thin skin, she’d just believed she had and wanting someone to, Damon had gone along with it. Small measures of what he’d needed leaving him desperate for more.
Tangled in the sheets what could’ve been hours later, Damon pondered Claire’s earlier statement. She hadn’t been wrong, very rarely was. That made two of them, didn’t it? Damon’s grin grew as he eased back enough to narrow bright blue eyes at her. ”Cause I never stop telling you that I am?” he asked lightly, feeling the buzz beneath his skin as she slid a hand into his hair. He hummed lightly, about to turn his head into that peck of a kiss but Claire was already heading for his shoulder instead. ”I’d promise that I wouldn’t this time but that might make me a liar.” This night had been about the truth, the thin veils of what had been, what might’ve ended up being if things hadn’t taken the path they’d both hoped it might, disappearing between them as they’d tumbled into her bed. ”That’s a weight off my shoulders,” Damon crooned lightly. He wriggled them against the sheets, the hand behind Claire’s neck preventing her from getting jostled. People might still question her sanity but one of them had ever really seen what had been between the two of them.
This wasn’t just some poor attempt to shrug off what feelings he supposedly had elsewhere still. Katherine was wrong if she thought she hadn’t scorch every inch of ground she’d ever occupied in his chest. This was over a hundred years in the coming and there was no tarnishing it. Damon chuckled as Claire played along. He pouted faintly, using the hand that wasn’t curled into Claire’s hair to tug the sheets up around him like he was trying to hide everything she’d become acquainted with tonight. ”You’re gonna have me blushing,” he chided lightly, pretending to fan himself like a debutante getting her first dance request at a ball. ”If you are, we might have to arrange to do this more often because I’ve got absolutely no problem with it.” His grin peeked back out, wolfish around the edges as his hand dipped beneath the covers to draw ever widening circles over her ribs. ”The question is if you’d have a problem if I was just after you for yours?” If anything the months of wanting for this spoke to the opposite. This was all in for other reasons, no shallow leap for the nearest pretty face to heal his broken heart and shattered ego.

Claire had never been the type to rush into anything, especially with someone who meant as much to her as Damon did. Instead they had taken things slow and he had been incredibly patient with her. Claire knew that she would always be grateful to him for that but she was glad that she’d finally told him that she was ready to take that next step. She’d had a life before she had become a vampire, she’d had a husband and children she adored but she’d had to leave them all behind after she was turned. Deep down she knew that she had been punishing herself all this time and it had felt good to finally let go of that guilt and move on. Taking things slow had given them both the chance to realise that this was what they both wanted and Claire knew now that it definitely was. She really liked Damon and she knew that what they had could end up being something really great. “Of course, it’s one of your favourite pastimes,” Claire teased. Damon did often like to think that he was right even when he wasn’t but this time she had to hand it to him, he really had been right when he’d said that good things come to those who wait. As he spoke again, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course it would, I know you’re going to be gloating about being right about this for weeks,” she grinned, knowing that this was one of the few times where she wouldn’t actually mind. It had definitely been worth the wait but now it was something that she knew she wanted to happen more often because it really did feel like they’d connected on a whole new level. As Damon said her being happy was a weight off his shoulders before moving them to prove it, Claire rolled her eyes playfully. “You’re so corny at times,” she laughed although the truth was that she didn’t mind one bit. “I can’t imagine you ever being self conscious about your body,” Claire grinned. He certainly hadn’t back in London when they first met and he hadn’t been since she’d arrived in town either. Damon knew how good looking he was and he was never afraid to use that to his advantage. “We’re definitely going to have to do this more often,” she grinned, feeling a pleasant tingle where Damon was drawing circles over her ribs. “There’s nothing to stop us now.” She had meant it when she’d said that her feelings for Damon were stronger than ever now and she hoped that the same was true of him. As he spoke again, she leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his lips. “I think the fact that you were willing to wait proves that it’s much more than that for you,” she said gently. She knew that waiting had never really been Damon’s style but he had been willing to wait for her and that meant the world to her. “Now, have you worked up enough of an appetite or shall we go for round two?” she asked, running the backs of her fingers down his cheek as her free hand brushed his hair away from his face. Giuseppe’s harsh treatment of his eldest son over the years should’ve left that part of him that craved his father’s approval scarred over. His opinion about war and courage shouldn’t have mattered, but they had sent him to war all the same. When that slap of disapproval had come when he’d deserted and headed home it had been another kick in the teeth. It had taken a woman just as callous for him to realise that there were other ways to fill that hole. For more than a century Damon had let himself do that. Screw other people, he was getting what he wanted and if some tragedy happened because of that? Boo hoo. They all got hurt, they all got disappointed, it was human. Of course, it was all a cover, a slid slapped over that gaping hole through him that had never healed. Giuseppe had rotten in the ground long ago and the world had changed. That cover was still slapped over the most vulnerable part of him – sarcasm, arrogance, selfishness – but every now and then it shifted just enough.
It had vanished for a time tonight, but now in the afterglow Damon was grinning. He bent his head, pressing his lips against the top of her head and growled into the dark silk of her hair. ”For good reason,” he said loftily. ”Have to male sure people don’t forget.” They wouldn’t this time, even if he didn’t brag half as much as he was threatening to. His finger trailed lightly over the side of Claire’s neck, making a thoughtful sound. ”I might keep it short, just a week or two, but I think this needs some real celebration. Don’t you?” Of course, he wasn’t serious, not about that. About Claire? Absolutely, and that thought was as scary as it was reassuring after years of his emotions being shackled by a woman who had never wanted him. He let out a little huff of amusement as he settled back into the mattress. ”Maybe, but you like corny, so it’s all good.” On the other hand Katherine would’ve seized on all of this tenderness like an eagle with its prey caught in her ruby painted talons.
The sheets stopped at half mast, his hand pressed to them like an old maid keeping her modesty. Damon let them slip as he shrugged. Maybe he had Katherine to thank for that too. She’d certainly unlocked parts of him that had been scarred long before she’d shown up. ”Too arrogant to blush about my flaws?” he asked lightly, clucking his tongue. That wasn’t that far from the truth these days though. With Claire he could let that side fade away. ”Mm-hmm,” Damon crooned. He tilted his head, blue eyes narrowing faintly as that grin grew. ”I think that means you’re gonna have to get used to me stealing the covers a little more often. Hey, for you I’d wait a century.” His voice went hoarse at that. They had waited a century for the time to be right and now there wasn’t a thing on earth to step in the way of it all. For a moment he lay there, his eyes locked on Claire’s and then Damon was rolling, tugging the sheet up around them again. ”I’d say I could go for round two before we take a nibble. You’re a temptress you know?” One that wouldn’t wind him up and tear him apart the moment she grew bored of him. This was so much more than that. Lowering his head, Damon sank deep back into the kiss as if they’d never parted.
