Home. He’d wanted to go home. Riley knew he was stronger with a pack, Scott and Danny had told him so and waking ... coming back to life ... with them all around him, he’d felt it, but he hadn’t wanted to stay surrounded by them all. For a long time the word home had little meaning but getting shakily to his feet, holding on to Danny, a part of him had longed for it. The familiarity of it, the sound of his dad’s fingers on the keyboard of his laptop, the vague scent of his mom’s perfume that had seemed to linger in the air wherever they were, the refuge of the room that was his, entirely his. Most of the places they’d stopped he’d barely unpacked his stuff, hadn’t wanted to need to take it down again in a week or a month. There was always that next place to be, another room to get used to. Mystic Falls was supposed to be somewhere to be down roots though, they’d agreed on it, and so he’d pulled the boxes from the trunk of the truck finally, had put the nails in the walls himself, hanging the photos he’d finally printed and framed. In that room he hadn’t been the kid struggling not to sprout claws every five minutes he’d just been him, in that room Danny had admitted he loved him and he’d said the words right back. Chest beginning to heave despite his brain’s attempts to stop it, Riley had asked to go back there. Sitting in the front of Danny’s car as they turned off the road, Riley stared at the truck that was parked in front of the house. His parents were back then, some time during the days he’d been gone they’d returned home. There was no way of telling whether they were still there now, the windows were dark but it was still early enough that they could have been sleeping. Had they noticed he was gone? Had they searched for him the way Danny and the others had? Blowing out a long breath, Riley shrugged off the doubts. What would it change if they hadn’t? He’d always known what they were like and by now it was obvious they weren’t going to change, so he had to. His hands were steady as he unbuckled his seatbelt and pushed it away from the t-shirt that still bore the bloody, ragged hole left by the fist of Niklaus Mikaelson, they stayed steady as he reached over for Danny’s hand. ”Thanks for driving me home,” he said softly, shifting in his seat to turn towards his boyfriend. ”I know I don’t have to say it but I want to. I want to thank you for everything. When … on the other side I didn’t think I’d get to tell you that again, or say that I love you. I thought that was it for me. That I’d just get a few weeks of happiness and that would be it. I didn’t think I’d get to graduate high school or go to college, or introduce you to my parents … I guess that might happen sooner rather than later if they’re here.” Blue eyes cut back to the house, brows beetling together over them for a moment before he looked away again. ”Come inside with me?” he asked softly, not yet ready to let go, to release his hold on the man who’d anchored him here.

Even now as he drove Riley back home Danny couldn’t shake the pain that he had felt when he had seen his boyfriend lying lifeless on the ground, the ache that had felt like his heart too had been ripped out. He’d been in other relationships before but the truth was that he had never felt anything like this and that scared him. Things could have so easily gone differently, had it not been for Henrik and Lukas then Riley would have been gone forever and that was something that Danny didn’t even want to think about. It had been somewhat of a whirlwind romance so far, a holiday romance that had turned into something so much more when they found each other again in Mystic Falls, but now he was painfully aware of just how quickly it could be taken away from them so he knew that he didn’t want to waste a moment of their time together, nor did he particularly want to let Riley out of his sight at the moment. Danny was lucky in that he hadn’t really experienced loss before, he had known Allison before she died but he hadn’t known her very well so her death hadn’t affected him the same way it had the others. Seeing the pain they had gone through when she was brought back, though, had tugged at his heartstrings and he still believed that he had made the right decision in following them to Mystic Falls no matter how dangerous it was. Had he not done so then he wouldn’t have formed the friendships that he now had and he wouldn’t have found Riley again so he knew that he would never regret the decisions that he had made, he could only do everything possible to make sure that the people he cared about stayed safe. Pulling up at the front of Riley’s house, Danny switched off the engine and he gave Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze as he thanked him for driving him home. “It was as much for you as it was for me, I don’t want to let you out of my sight,” he admitted. He knew that it was irrational but he couldn’t shake the feeling that if he did then he might find that Henrik and Lukas bringing Riley back was just a dream and that his death had been permanent after all. Danny had a feeling that was probably how Scott had felt after Allison was freed from the demon and the truth was that Danny really wasn’t in a hurry to leave Riley just yet. They had already been through so much together in such a short space of time and the thought that they might have only had a few short months together in Mystic Falls before the worst happened was enough to make his heart ache once more. As Riley spoke again, Danny reached forward and ;et his hand rest against his boyfriend’s cheek. “You don’t need to worry about that now, you’re going to get to do all of those things and more. I’ll make sure of it,” he promised. He really didn’t know what he would have done if Riley hadn’t been brought back but if things hadn’t worked out the way they had done then Danny felt certain that he would have found some way to make things right, no matter what. He was a little surprised when Riley invited him inside even though he knew that his parents might be there but rather than bolting like he knew he might have done once, he felt a smile touch his lips and he nodded. “Sure,” he said as he unbuckled his seatbelt, not ready to leave Riley just yet. “You’d better take my jacket, I doubt you will want your parents asking questions about the state of your shirt,” he added as he pulled off his jacket and held it out to Riley. “It wouldn’t make a great first impression if that was how I brought you home.”RILEY PARKER

It had been a sort of rebirth. For a few minutes ... at least that was what it had seemed to be to Riley on the other side ... he’d shed his body. What had been left on the ground on the quarry had no longer been him, the kid who’d been hiding from himself in a body that had been feeling alien since the night he’d been bitten gone. It had been a shell left behind, one his boyfriend and friends had been mourning over when his soul had been dragged back from the empty woods he had ended up in. With a gasp of air the two warlocks had pulled him back from there, forcing that soul back into his body. As Danny had driven him home Riley had tried to take stock of himself, letting his mind test his limbs, concentrating on his heartbeat, Danny’s echoing in his ears alongside it, the rush of blood through his veins, the hair rising on his skin, that faint heat on his left side, radiating from Danny. Somehow it all felt new, as though he’d shed his skin and what was beneath was tender and vulnerable. He didn’t want that fresh skin, that fragile new form to be torn open the way the last had. It was strong, Riley was certain of that, he was stronger, but still, there was apprehension in his heart as they pulled up to the house and he decided this was the time to come clean to his family, about part of his life at least. Telling them that he’d been turned into a werewolf in Bear Creek and that he’d just been killed as part of a ritual to free an Original vampire’s werewolf side before being resurrected by his magic wielding brother, that was going to have to wait. Riley looked down at their joined hands as Danny squeezed his hand, one corner of his mouth slanting into a grateful smile. ”If you’d tried to let me go I would’ve been clinging to you,” he admitted softly. It had felt like a dream at first and Riley had been afraid that if he even blinked it would all fade back into that empty world again. It had almost seemed like fate would only allow him the amazing life he’d found in Mystic Falls for a short time before it was snatched away again. The words that had been sitting on his tongue about that fear finally tumbled out all at once. It was bitter on his tongue, the taste only fading as Danny’s hand settled against his face and he murmured the words that he needed to hear. ”You’re always saving me in one way or another,” he murmured, lifting his hand to settle it over Danny’s. ”I don’t want to be afraid of any of it anymore. I don’t want to waste any time wishing I’d done something when I had the chance.” Seizing the day was a cheesy idea but there was enough to it to drive him to ask Danny to come inside with him. It was a big step, one he’d not taken in Hawaii, even before things had grown this serious between the two of them. Relieved that Danny was ready to take it with him, Riley took the jacket offered to him, drawing in a deep breath of Danny’s scent from it before he began to slip it on. ”That’s a conversation I’m not ready to have with them yet,” he agreed. ”One giant scary step at a time. Although, my mom probably wouldn’t notice if I was missing a limb once I say the magic ‘boyfriend’ word to her. You sure you’re ready to handle Hurricane Maggie?” Riley knew that Danny would say yes, even as he sucked in a deep breath and drew back to climb out of the car. He waited by it for Danny to get out, hand held out to him for that anchor again.

Danny was lucky in that he had never lost anyone really close to him before. Even though he had known Allison and Aiden before they died he hadn’t known them that well but he had seen the devastation their deaths had caused in the faces of the people he cared about. With Riley it had been different, the moment they met in Hawaii he had felt an instant connection between them and even though he had understood when Riley had had to leave, that didn’t mean that he hadn’t still found himself wishing that he might get to see him again one day. Reuniting with him in Mystic Falls had been a surprise but it had definitely been a good one and after everything that he and his friends had seen Danny knew not to take anything for granted. Opening up to Riley and telling him that he loved him had been a big step but it was something that Danny had felt ready for and luckily for him it had proved not to be a one sided thing. For a long time he had known that Riley meant a lot to him but he had never appreciated just how much until that day. Seeing Riley have his heart ripped out of his chest had made Danny feel like his own heart had been removed along with it and he finally knew how Scott and the others must have felt when Allison died or how much pain Ethan had felt when Aiden died. He could still hardly believe that Riley had been returned to him and he knew that he wasn’t ready to let the boy out of his sight just yet out of fear that it might all be a dream. Bringing the car to a stop outside of Riley’s house now, Danny knew as he looked down at their joined hands that he never wanted to experience a pain like that again. Mystic Falls was just as dangerous as Beacon Hills and there were going to be things that would prove to be out of their control but he refused to lose Riley like that again, he knew that his heart wouldn’t be able to take it. “I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that you’re here,” he admitted. “I lost you once when you left Hawaii, I don’t want to do that again.” He didn’t doubt that the events of the ritual would replay in his mind whenever he closed his eyes but he knew that he just needed to remind himself that even though it had happened, Riley had been brought back. Twice now he had felt sure that he would never see Riley again and both times they had been given a second chance so he knew better than to take it for granted. He wanted to cherish the time they had together and he knew that if there was anything he could do to stop Riley from getting hurt again then he would do it in an instant. “You don’t need to be afraid, you’ve got this,” Danny assured him. “I’m all for seizing the day though. If there is anything you want to do let me know and we’ll make it happen,” he offered. He knew that a bucket list was a bit cliché but he also knew that it would be good to get as much done as possible if they could. Nodding as Riley said that he wasn’t ready to have that conversation with his parents yet, Danny couldn’t help but laugh as he asked whether he could handle Hurricane Maggie. “I survived living in Beacon Hills, I can handle meeting your mom,” he chuckled as he climbed out of the car and took Riley’s hand in his once more. On the other side it had been quiet. Sitting in the car, the quiet, reassuring presence of Danny at his side, Riley had wondered if he might’ve found peace there eventually. When he’d first woken there his only thought had been of Danny, it had been his name he’d called out there. Without Danny, before Danny, Riley suspected he might just have let go there, the fight gone out of him as resignation replaced it. Not this time though, despite the quiet he’d fought and would’ve carried on fighting there until it finally got through to him that he was never going to get back. He and Danny had been parted once and he’d been determined it wouldn’t happen again. The choice had been snatched from him by the vampire, the hybrid, but it had been given back to him. How he was going to thank Henrik for that Riley didn’t know but he’d try, whatever the price was for this he was willing to pay it. Even if that price included coming clean to his parents. If he had to do that tonight, although right now he really didn’t want to, Riley knew he’d do it. Holding Danny’s hand, with his steady, loving presence at his side, he would admit to what had happened in Bear Creek and all that had happened since. Finally he felt like he could be at peace with what he was now, who he was. Drawing in a deep breath, Riley looked up from their joined hands, met Danny’s eye. Coming to at the quarry, it had been hard to believe that he’d been dead, despite the pain he’d felt when Niklaus’ hand had punched through his chest. He’d seen the grief on Danny’s face, had wanted to erase it somehow. ”When we found each other again I swore I wouldn’t leave you again. He made me a liar. I felt his hand in my chest, felt the pain and then it was gone but … when I woke up, I thought I must’ve dreamed it.” But he hadn’t. After being gone for days, after the witches had moved them again and had aided in the ritual, he’d died and had been returned to his pack. They’d helped me when he needed to come to terms with what he was when he’d first arrived in town and they’d all been there when he’d been resurrected. His pack had given him the strength he needed and Riley knew he needed to trust that they would again should he need it. ”I’ve got it thanks to you,” Riley clarified. Shaking his head faintly he lifted their joined hands, skimmed his lips over Danny’s knuckles. ”Right now just being with you is enough for me but anything I think of and you’re the first to know.” Just being happy for a little longer would be enough for now and once he negotiated his way through this reunion with his parents. One step at a time, he reminded himself, and this one wasn’t going to include telling the story of how he’d bitten if he could help it. Wrapped in Danny’s coat, in his scent, Danny’s hand in his, Riley began to move towards the house. For what he thought was the first time since the night he’d been snatched he laughed, Danny’s words wringing the sound from him. ”I don’t know, I think my mom could out-fierce an Alpha if she put her mind to it,” he warned. His hand slid into the pocket of his jeans as they approached the door, his keys still miraculously there. Riley unlocked the door, pushed it open and drew Danny into the still air beyond it. ”Dad?” his voice seemed to echo in the quiet house. ”Mom?” Again silence. His stomach turning hollow, Riley reached for the light switch, certain that all he was going to find now was an empty house.

Danny had seen a lot during his time in both Beacon Hills and Mystic Falls but the truth was that he had never seen anything like the events that had unfolded that day and he knew that he never wanted to again. Ever since he first met Riley it had been a bit of a rollercoaster, a summer romance that had meant so much more to Danny than he had ever wanted to admit only to have it cut far too short when the other boy left the island with his dad. From there everything had started to change, the Riley he had met in the halls of the high school that first day was the same boy he had met over the summer and yet he was different at the same time. With Ethan, Danny had used the excuse of the other boy being a werewolf as a reason why their relationship would never have worked out but the truth was that had been a lie. It had never mattered to him what a person was, he had learned a long time ago to keep an open mind about that but it had been the right thing to do. Ethan had needed to leave Beacon Hills after his brother died and Danny hadn’t wanted to be the reason why he had felt like he’d had to stay. With Riley, however, it was completely different. It had been a surprise to learn that he had been bitten after they parted ways during the summer but Danny had never wanted to let that come between them. He loved Riley no matter what he was and he had never felt as scared as he had done the moment he had realised that Riley was missing. At first he had thought that perhaps Riley’s parents had decided that they were moving on but he had known that Riley would never leave without saying goodbye. He had enlisted Stiles’ help in trying to find the other boy and he knew that Scott and the others had done what they could too but in the end they had arrived on the scene too late and he was just glad that there had been someone on hand who could change the outcome of the ritual. Now Danny knew that they could finally start getting on with their lives without the threat of something happening hanging over their heads but all he could think about at the moment was not wanting to let Riley out of his sight. He had never felt pain like that before and he knew that he didn’t want to go through that again. As Riley spoke, Danny brought his hand up and let it rest gently against his cheek. “Don’t worry about that now. He didn’t make you a liar, you’re still here so you kept your word,” Danny assured him. “I’m sorry I let you down, I made a promise that I wouldn’t let anything happen to you but there was nothing I could do.” He knew that he had failed Riley, he had promised himself that he would do everything he could to keep him safe but this had still happened and there hadn’t been anything that he could do about it. He had moved to Mystic Falls wanting to save his friends from going through that kind of heartache again but it hadn’t worked out like that and he was so thankful that Henrik and Lukas had been there. “I don’t buy that for a minute. You would have figured it out on your own eventually, I’ve yet to see anything you can’t do,” Danny admitted. Riley had always been resourceful, that was one of the things that Danny had always admired in him, so he didn’t doubt that he would have figured it out sooner or later but he was still glad that he had been able to help. Riley’s next words were enough to bring a smile to Danny’s lips. “I’m going to hold you to that,” he assured him. Riley’s life had already been taken from him once so Danny knew that the last thing he wanted was for there to be things that Riley wished that he had done in life before it was too late. As he spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You haven’t seen Scott when he gets fired up but I’ll take your word for it,” he chuckled, giving Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze as he followed him into the house. For just a few months he wanted the ground to be steady under his feet. In the past it had always been moving, his dad and his mom in her way, keeping the road rolling beneath them as they made their way from one end of the country to the other. Arriving in Mystic Falls that feeling of constantly flying a foot above the blacktop had faded, only to be replaced by this constant roller coaster of relief and fear. It was punctuated by people, the highs and lows instigated by them, handled because of their help. Riley knew now that the chances he was getting to get some flat ground for a while in Mystic Falls were pretty low but he still wanted that more than anything else. He wanted to be able to wake up in the morning and just not worry about when that next dip was about to come. The days he’d spent in the cave it had felt like that dip was bottomless, the fear barely subsiding once things had calmed down with the vampire he’d been trapped with. His stomach had lurched when he’d remembered Grace being there at the ritual with him, only settling when he saw that he hadn’t been the only one that the witches had brought back. Together Henrik and Lukas had brought back all three of Niklaus’ Mikaelson’s victims, giving them that solid ground again. One thing he knew they couldn’t guarantee, though, was a life that remained on that ground. Fate was the only controlling the way it moved under his feet but Riley suspected he could now have at least one hand on the wheel, and the other holding on to Danny’s. Now one of those reassuring hands was resting on his cheek. The touch drove away thoughts of how he might’ve broken the promise he’d made, easing the furrow that had deepened between his brows. One corner of Riley’s mouth curled up as he lifted his hand to settle it over Danny’s. ”You didn’t let me down,” he said softly. ”What happened was out of both of our hands. You had no idea that the witches were going to be lurking in town waiting for me and you had no idea where they put us. From what Stiles told me, you all did everything possible to find me and stop this from happening.” Neither one of them had broken their promises. They’d fought against someone far older and far stronger than they were and had lost the battle ... but not the war. Henrik and Lukas had guaranteed that Niklaus didn’t have a total victory. Laughing weakly, Riley continued to shake his head. ”There’s plenty I can’t do. It used to be that I’d just give in when I ran into something I couldn’t handle but at least now I want to push myself to start figuring it out and handling it.” If he could survive having his heart torn out then surely he could survive anything. Maybe that meant he should start paragliding or bungee jumping or even insist on emancipating himself from his parents so he didn’t have to follow their whim until his eighteenth birthday. Returning Danny’s smile Riley felt his confidence growing. ”Hold me to anything you want now. I’m yours.” It felt good to say the words, to know that no matter how far he was from his family, literally and metaphorically, he had someone right by his side. Riley knew he’d likely need to rely on that now that he was about to face up to his parents. ”I haven’t,” Riley admitted with a chuckle as he turned to look around the living room, ”but I’ve seen my mom fired up and I swear there was steam coming out of her ears. Does the house seem empty to you?” Eyes narrowed, Riley began to tow Danny towards the bedrooms. The living room was empty, the kitchen too. He went to rap his knuckles against his parents’ bedroom door but it was already cracked, swinging open as he touched it with his hand to reveal the neatly made and blatantly empty bed beyond.

The fact that he’d had health problems wasn’t something that Danny had ever felt comfortable sharing with too many people but the truth was that it had made him realise that he had to live life to the full. Allison’s death had reminded him of that and ever since then he had been doing his best to make each day count. When he met Riley in Hawaii he had seen a shy kid who hadn’t really felt like he fit in with the other teenagers there and Danny had made it his mission to take the guy under his wing because he knew that if that had been him then he would have wanted someone to show him the same kindness. Ever since then something had been building between them and even though Danny had tried to convince himself that it was just a summer romance a part of him had always known that it ran deeper than that. Seeing Riley again at the school had felt like a blessing as far as Danny was concerned, it had been a chance to say all of the things that he had wanted to say over the summer but hadn’t felt ready to. Learning that Riley was a werewolf had derailed that idea somewhat but the way that Danny felt about him hadn’t changed. Riley meant so much more to him than he had ever wanted to admit and seeing him lying on the ground like he had done earlier that way had made it feel like his worst nightmare was coming true. He had made a promise to himself that he would do everything he could in order to protect Riley and he had failed but he knew that he wasn’t going to make that same mistake again. “One of the witches went after Scott to get her hands on something that Derek gave him. I knew the ritual was going ahead but by then you had already been taken,” Danny explained. It didn’t help alleviate his guilt at all but despite knowing that the ritual was going to be taking place at some point it had taken them too long to figure out where and when and Riley had been the one to pay the price for that. Had it not been for the two warlocks then all those used in the ritual would have been taken from them for good and Danny just hoped that there wouldn’t be any consequences but even if there were he knew that they would face them head on the way they always did. “What happened has made you stronger and that isn’t a bad thing,” he assured Riley gently. “I still believe that there isn’t anything you can’t do when you put your mind to it and I’m sure that in time you will see that too,” he added. He had complete faith in Riley and he hoped that in time Riley would start believing in himself a little more too. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t stop his smile from widening. “I’ll never get tired of hearing you say that,” he admitted. Ever since they parted ways towards the end of the summer he had found himself thinking a lot about what might have happened between them if they had lived in the same place but now they had the chance to find out and as far as he was concerned it was going pretty well so far. Falling for Riley had never been the plan when they first started hanging out together but that was exactly what had happened and he knew now that he wouldn’t have it any other way. As Riley asked if the house seemed empty, Danny simply nodded and followed him in the direction of the bedrooms. Sure enough Riley’s parents weren’t there and he gave Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Looks like we have the place to ourselves.”RILEY PARKER

Trapped in the cave, unsure if or when he and Grace would ever be released, Riley’d had all the time in the world to think about what was going on outside, what would happen when the people who cared about him learned what had happened in the town square the night he’d disappeared. It’d felt almost like lunacy to picture his parents panicking, wishful thinking to believe that they would’ve even noticed he was gone. The overriding image had been of Danny realising he was gone first, hurt striking the boy he’d started falling for over the summer as he thought first that he’d just left town without telling him, followed by fear as it became clear that this hadn’t just been a case of his parents doing him wrong again. In the back of his mind he’d wondered whether or not they were the next targets, Danny, Scott, even Lydia, Stiles or Allison, ending up in the cave with him, but time had ticked by without anybody else being dragged into the mess, without a sign that anybody knew where they were. Danny had warned him about the power of certain things out there in the weeks after they’d reunited but Riley knew he never would’ve been able to picture what had happened in the end, the sort of horror that’d filled him as he’d felt the hybrid’s fingers punch through his chest. Nobody could’ve anticipated that, nobody sane at least. Who the hell would’ve pictured themselves dying in some twisted ancient ritual that would free a werewolf side bound by magic… … a guy who’d been turned into a werewolf himself should’ve been able to, Riley thought. That guy should at least have known that the people out there looking for him would’ve found him given enough time and less interference from those holding him. The thought that Scott had been targeted by the witches too had Riley’s brow furrowing for a moment. ”Is he OK?” he asked, knowing the whammy the witches could put on even a wolf now. Riley could still hear guilt in the words Danny was speaking, his thumb skimming over the back of Danny’s hand to reassure him. ”You couldn’t have known that it was going to involve any of us. I know that if you even imagined it you would’ve warned us all, kept us safe.” Riley also that the sentiment would be a cold comfort to Danny. That meant that he had to work harder to show his boyfriend that something good had come of this, that he’d come out the other side better than he’d gone into it. ”There was a time I would’ve argued with you and told you there I absolutely couldn’t but now even if I fail at something I’m going to have given it my best try first … and if I happen to fall on my ass as I fail, I’ll have people there to help me back up.” Just as he’d always help them up. Eyes narrowing faintly, Riley found the teasing note he’d come to leave hearing in his own voice emerging. ”There’s a lot of things you seem to like hearing from me. It’s probably a damn good thing you do too, since you’re stuck with me loving you.” It was something he was never going to tire of saying, something he’d not stay quiet on now that he knew how quickly that could be snatched away. It could be gone even faster than his parents had been. Frowning, Riley gave a sigh as Danny squeezed his hand. ”The only thing that would shock me was if they were out trying to find me right now.” But they weren’t, Riley could tell that as soon as he stepped away from his parents’ empty bedroom and pushed open the door to his own. The phone that’d been left in the truck was in the centre of his still rumpled bed, a note, a few bills and what looked like his dad’s credit card pinned beneath. ”I don’t think they even stopped to try and check were I was before they left.” They’d just assumed he was safe and back to his ‘not rocking the boat’ ways.

Danny knew that in a way he had probably let himself be lured into a false sense of security after he and the others had managed to save Allison, life had returned to normal and he had been able to focus on his school work, his friends and his relationship with Riley the same way that an ordinary teenager would have been able to. A part of him had known that it was all too good to be true but he hadn’t wanted to believe it. He and the others had heard rumours about the ritual beforehand but it was only when Riley disappeared and Scott was paid a visit by one of Klaus’ witches that it had started to hit home that the ritual was actually going to go ahead. By then the wheels had already been set into motion and even though Danny knew that they would have found Riley if they’d only had a little more time it was too late to think like that now. The ritual had gone ahead and somehow, against all odds, Riley was back with them where he belonged and for that Danny was thankful. The pain he had felt when Riley had died was still there at the back of his mind and he knew that he never wanted to feel pain like that again and he didn’t want anyone he cared about to either. It served as a reminder of just how easily even a supernatural life could be taken and it made Danny more determined than ever to cherish every moment he had with Riley and their friends. As Riley asked if Scott was ok, Danny nodded. “It took a while for the effects to wear off but he’s fine, we’re all more worried about you right now,” he admitted. The others didn’t know Riley as well as he did but they still cared about him and Danny knew that they were all glad that he was safe once again. It had been a surprise when the moonstone had been taken but Scott had recovered and now they all knew that they needed to be a little more vigilant in the future. “It won’t happen again, I won’t lose you a third time,” Danny assured him. He had already lost Riley once when the boy had returned home at the end of his holiday and he had lost him for a second time that day. Both times had hurt and the truth was that Danny knew that he couldn’t stand to go through that again. “Always,” Danny nodded as Riley said that he now had people to help him back up if he failed. That was something that the boy hadn’t had before but now he was a part of the pack and that meant that there would always be people there to help him. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re right, there are,” he chuckled, his smile turning playful as he looked over at his boyfriend. “You’re stuck with me loving you too,” he added sincerely. He had fallen for Riley over the summer even though he hadn’t wanted to admit it at first and since then those feelings had only grown so he knew that nothing was going to change that. As they reached Riley’s room only to find a note among other things left for him by his parents, Danny wrapped his arms around his boyfriend. “I don’t like how your parents treat you but you know they love you in their own way,” he assured him gently. “You’re not on your own anymore.”RILEY PARKER

Other people’s parents would’ve noticed their kids had been missing for days, they would’ve called the cops, sent out search parties, panicked and worried themselves half to death until they were found. His parents … they’d obviously come back from wherever it was they’d gone for dinner that night, dumped the truck and not realised anything was out of place. It showed they had trust in him, trust that he’d be able to take care of himself but they’d been pulling the same crap since long before he should’ve been allowed to stay home on his own. Riley knew he should’ve been pissed about that again but instead of there being the sort of flash of anger that had him tearing his own clothes off as his body used that adrenalin to transform itself or shredding the truck and costing him half of his savings to repair, there was just a sense of resignation. If him breaking a kid’s arm hadn’t given his parents a wake up call then nothing was going to. A part of him knew that maybe he was better off without them, that they should just go and do whatever they wanted to with their lives, another part of him, even now, wondered if his dad would cope without him there to make sure he ate and got some sleep. He had a family of sorts with Scott’s pack now, people who’d been worried about him while he was gone, who’d tried to find him and who he’d worried about in turn, but that part of him that worried over his dad would always be there, it just wouldn’t consume him with rage now. It was fear not anger that had bubbled up when Danny had mentioned Niklaus’ witches paying Scott a visit. Riley felt it as a knot in the pit of his gut, that sucker punch that sucked away his breath for a heartbeat. Riley drew in another breath as Danny nodded, the knot releasing. ”I’m fine too,” he promised, not one hundred percent sure of that yet but near certain that he at least would be in time. ”You don’t have to worry about me. I’m not planning on losing you either.” In this case it wasn’t going to be third time the charm, he was going to fight tooth and nail to make sure he didn’t have to see that look in Danny’s eye again. No more breaking the heart of the guy he loved. Drawing up both of their joined hands, Riley pressed Danny’s hand flat against his chest, letting his boyfriend feel his heartbeat thud there strongly. ”I want to be there for all of you too, whenever you need me.” When he’d first arrived in town he would’ve said that he couldn’t be relied on, no matter how much he wanted to be, he was too unpredictable but Riley knew he’d grown and found control since then. It was all thanks to Danny and Scott’s pack. Danny had been behind most of the changes in him, teaching him to grow even more comfortable in his own skin, proving to him that he was capable of loving someone in the way his parents had never been able to. ”I’ve never been so grateful for being stuck with something in my life,” he admitted, his grin broad. ”I’m never going to get tired of hearing it from you.” That love had brought him back from the other side today and it was going to get him through the realisation that his parents were definitely gone for now. Letting out a long breath, Riley wrapped his arms around Danny’s neck. ”This is the only way they know how to do this. I know I shouldn’t defend them but maybe this is for the best. They’ll never know what happened tonight and I can work through this without them." Feeling luckier than he had any right to be, Riley searched Danny’s face. ”Stay here with me tonight?”

Danny wasn’t a part of the group when they lost Allison but he had still seen the pain that they had all gone through and it was something that he had hoped that none of them would ever have to go through again. Seeing Riley trapped in that ring of fire earlier that day, however, had left him feeling completely helpless. The connection with Riley had been pretty much instant, they had hit it off straight away and it hadn’t been long after that when Danny had started feeling something more than friendship for the other boy. It was only supposed to be a summer romance but it had turned into so much more than that and even though he had had his heart broken in the past when relationships came to an end that had been absolutely nothing in comparison to what he had been through that day. He really didn’t know what he would have done had it not been for Henrik and Lukas bringing everyone back but thankfully he didn’t have to worry about that now. Riley was back with them were he belonged although Danny knew that it would undoubtedly be a while before he felt comfortable letting Riley out of his sight again. The moment Riley had disappeared he had known that something was wrong, he wouldn’t have just left without saying goodbye even if his parents had made him leave Mystic Falls with them but Danny had never expected him to be caught up in the ritual. Needless to say he was glad that it was over now and that they had another chance and he knew that he would do everything he could to keep Riley safe. For now, though, Danny knew that he would just settle for making sure that the other boy was doing ok and that was what had prompted him to drive Riley home. No matter how shaken up he had been by the whole thing he knew that it had to have been that much worse for Riley and that wasn’t something that he could ignore. Ever since they met he had wanted to make things better for Riley in any way that he could and he had a feeling that after everything Riley had been through seeing his parents again probably wasn’t something that he would want to deal with right now even though they lived together. In a way it was probably a good thing that the house seemed so quiet and as Riley spoke Danny took his boyfriend’s hand in his. “You don’t need to put on a brave face for me, you can’t be ok after what happened but I hope that in time you will be,” he said gently. He knew that it would take Riley time to move on from what had happened, it would for all of them, but the last thing Danny wanted was for Riley to ever feel like he had to lie to him. “Besides, I’m always going to worry about you. It is a part of my job,” he added, a half smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he looked over at Riley. “I’m going to hold you to that,” he said, unable to ignore the feeling or warmth that flowed through him as he felt Riley’s heart beating beneath his hand. He knew that things had been difficult for Riley for most of his life so far and it hadn’t been a walk in the park for him lately either but this time he wasn’t on his own and Danny knew that he wasn’t going to let the boy forget that. As Riley wrapped his arms around his neck, Danny wound his own arms around his boyfriend’s waist. “You’re right, maybe it is for the best that they’re not here tonight,” he agreed, not at all surprised that Riley seemed to have echoed his earlier thoughts. As he asked if he would stay with him, Danny nodded instantly. “Of course,” he promised. “Why don’t you get cleaned up and then we’ll get some sleep?” he suggested, knowing that he wouldn’t blame Riley if he was exhausted after everything that had happened. Riley supposed that finding the house empty was a relief. It would have been amazing to be able to walk into his house, his hand in Danny’s and introduce his boyfriend to his parents knowing that they would have been accepted but chances of that happening in any sort of sedate, normal way with his mom in town were as slim as him suddenly waking up human. He could dream of it but it just wasn’t possible. Instead he’d been given the opportunity to take the coward’s way out and put off both that conversation and the one that would reveal his true nature to his parents to a later date … far later most probably where his mom was concerned. At some point soon his dad would appear back in town, the grin on his face lingering a day or two, ideas for new books dancing in his head like sugar plums. When he came back he wouldn’t realise that his son had been missing for days, unless there was some sort of violent outburst, and then his dad would just blame it on teenage hysterics again rather than the fact that his son had been attacked in the woods and turned into a werewolf. There were people in this town who knew the truth, people who had been looking for him for days, people who cared and who mattered. People who were willing to walk into his house with him to meet the parents he’d only ever heard ill about, people who could see past the mask he had a tendency to wear to see the boy beneath and still love him. Almost anybody else would’ve taken his knee jerk ‘I’m fine’ as the truth and left him with that knot of anxiety in his gut growing tighter. Not Danny. Danny’s hand found his, loosening that knot, sending that cool wave of relief through him that emerged in a grateful smile. ”You’re not going to let me get away with just swallowing all of this down are you?” he said with a faint chuckle. ”I won’t do that. You’re only of the only people who’ll get to see me without it and because I can show you that, I will be OK in time.” He had his feet back under him, his freedom, his life and his heart intact thanks to the two warlocks. Looking into Danny’s eyes as he set his hand against his chest, Riley smiled back. ”It’s part of my job to worry about you too. This is a two way street, no going alone any more.” For someone who drifted through the world alone apart from an absent minded father his entire life that really meant something. He wasn’t going to waste the second chance he’d been given, wouldn’t question how it had happened, Riley was just prepared to be grateful for it and revel in this quiet moments. Chuckling as he glanced back in the direction of his bedroom, Riley nodded. ”My mom wouldn’t have minded the sleep over but she’d have been in and out of my room all night, totally amused with the idea of me being in love with someone.” That would’ve caught his mom’s attention more than the fact the t-shirt beneath his hoody was covered in blood, certainly more than the fact that he’d been gone for two days. Drawing back slightly, Riley dropped a hand to start unzipping the hoody. ”Always seems like I’m getting undressed in front of you,” he teased, the smile falling away slightly as he revealed the blood rimmed hole in his t-shirt. Riley bit his lip, his movements brusque as he peeled off the hoody and reached for the hem of his t-shirt. ”It seems weird to feel tired after what happened but I guess all that excitement takes it out of you.” Dying and coming back, it had to have taken some sort of toll.

Danny had a feeling that it would take a while for any of them to get over just how close they had come to losing another of their own but in time he knew that they would get there. He and Riley were both still relatively new to the group compared to the others but being around them was like having an extended family and when one of them was hurting then the others could feel it too. Riley might not be able to talk to his parents about anything that had happened to him since the summer that the two of them first met but he wasn’t alone any longer and for that Danny was grateful. In a way it was like fate had brought them both to Mystic Falls at the same time and even though bad things had happened during their time in the town so far he was confident that they would come out of this the other side just like they had everything else so far. Together they could get through anything life threw at them and even though Danny didn’t know what was going to happen after graduation he knew that they would figure it out. Even if they all ended up at different schools they would find a way to stay in touch and keep the close bonds that had formed and when it came to his relationship with Riley he knew that he wasn’t going to let something like school bring that to an end. A love this strong was something that Danny had never felt before and it was something that he knew he would fight for even if it meant having to make a few sacrifices. They had already been separated twice and against all odds they had found their way back to one another but he knew that he didn’t want them to be put in that position again. One thing he knew that he definitely wasn’t going to do was let Riley bottle things up. They had started out as friends but now they were partners and Danny knew that that meant they needed to be honest with each other no matter how difficult it might be sometimes so as Riley spoke, Danny shook his head and a chuckle escaped his lips. “Not a chance,” he assured him. He knew how unhealthy it was to keep things bottled up and one thing he had learned was that things could get out of hand quite easily if someone tried to handle something alone so he knew that he wasn’t going to let that happen. “Now that is an honest answer,” he nodded before leaning forward and pressing his lips gently against Riley’s. He believed Riley when he said that he would be ok in time, it wouldn’t be easy to get past what had happened but he had been given a second chance and it was one that Danny honestly hoped that he would make the most of. As Riley spoke again, Danny felt his smile return. “Deal,” he promised. Since the day they met they had looked out for one another and he knew that wasn’t about to change now. The stakes were higher for the two of them than they had been over the summer, now they didn’t just have their friendship or a summer romance to fight for they had actual love and that was something that Danny knew he never wanted to lose. “That would have been pretty awkward,” he chuckled. “Is it bad that I’m glad we don’t have to worry about that?” he added. After everything that he had been through over the last few days Danny didn’t doubt that that was the last thing that Riley needed so he was glad that they could have a peaceful night instead. As Riley spoke again he couldn’t help but laugh. “You won’t hear me complaining,” he chuckled before taking Riley’s hands in his own as the boy’s smile fell. “You have literally been to hell and back, I would be more surprised if you weren’t tired,” Danny assured him before lifting Riley’s shirt gently. “I’ll burn this for you, you’ll never have to see it again.”RILEY PARKER

This would’ve been impossible in front of his parents. Riley was painfully aware of that as Danny stopped him from just plastering over the cracks for now instead of acknowledging them and promising to deal with them properly. With his parents he’d always done just that, anything to avoid appearing weak. Weakness to Maggie Parker was a red rag to a bull, his mom’s eyes going glittery and sharp, her smile as predatory as any alpha he could picture as she closed in for the kill. His dad would’ve looked past it if it hadn’t affected him in any way but his mom had never been one to ignore a crack that she could widen. That much was clear with her off hand comments the afternoon Sawyer had found him not a dozen feet from him, coming around from his freak out over a single phone call. Maggie had driven the crack that being turned had put right through him wide open. That particular crack had almost closed up by the time the witch had knocked him out in the middle of Mystic Falls but others were still there. Riley could feel them, could tell exactly which ones would eventually disappear, which were already on the brink of doing that. The biggest was through the heart of him now, just waiting for something to blow it wide open. If it split he’d be driven to his knees the way he had been when Niklaus’ hand had punched through him but Riley felt better prepared for it now, more ready to heal than ever. Thanks to Danny. Always thanks to Danny. His laugh was a balm for it all, a band aid that would help pull the wounds together until they healed. Riley was tempted to settle their hands over that crack in his heart but even as the thought came he knew that he didn’t have to. Danny would know the moment it started to widen and he’d help close it. ”Seems weird to feel happy that someone wants me to drag all of those skeletons out of the closet when they start rattling but I am happy about it.” Relieved was maybe a better word for it. ”Always honest,” Riley promised hoarsely before letting his eyes close for a moment to sink into the kiss Danny pressed to his lips. Riley kissed Danny again as they made a deal over nobody going it alone again. It was the two of them against the world now, no matter how wild and vicious it got out there. He never could’ve pictured at the beginning of the summer that things were going to end up this way but despite all of the pain they’d had to go through to get here, Riley knew he wouldn’t have changed it for anything. Amusement finally pulled at him as he thought of how different this could’ve been had his mom been there. ”Not bad at all,” Riley promised, shaking his head. ”She’d have asked so many embarrassing questions that I would’ve been wishing for the bed to just swallow me whole.” It was why he’d asked Danny if he was ready for this before they’d come inside. It was a lot to take, especially on top of all that had happened today. Thankfully they didn’t have to take it and he could start shedding the day with his clothes. ”That was why you always wanted to meet on the beach in Hawaii,” he teased, ”less clothes to deal with.” Less blood. Riley’s heart tried to leap in his chest but Danny steeled it, catching his hands before he took over the undressing for him. ”Burn all of it,” Riley whispered. ”I don’t want any reminders of today. I want it erased as much as possible. I’m … I’m gonna dream about it…” Even with Danny there. He’d have to give in to the exhaustion and would have his anchor even in sleep but there was no pushing this down yet, it would find some way free.
