The knowledge that things could have so easily turned out so differently wasn’t lost on Danny, he knew that had Henrik and Lukas not been there than Riley wouldn’t have been brought back but that was something that he didn’t even want to think about. It had been difficult enough thinking about life without Riley in it when the other boy had left Hawaii at the end of the summer but just the thought of living in a world without him in it somewhere was unbearable to Danny. He hadn’t planned on it but he had fallen hard for Riley and even though he knew that it was possible to move on after a break up and he had done so himself before already he knew that he didn’t want to ever have to get over Riley. Not all relationships that started out during the teenage years lasted but Danny honestly hoped that theirs would. He had plenty of friends around him now that he could be himself with but the chances of finding someone who would understand everything about him and love him anyway were pretty slim so he knew that what he had with Riley was special. The boy was always going to have a lot to deal with considering he was a werewolf but Danny had promised Riley from the day they met again at school that he was going to be there for him no matter what and that was a promise that he intended on sticking to. He knew that Riley didn’t have much experience with having people stick by him, his parents had always been flaky from what Riley had told him and friends weren’t something that he’d had too many of either but that had all changed now. He had people around him who cared about him and Danny knew that they would all do whatever they could in order to help Riley and he knew that he would do the same without question. Getting over what had happened that day wasn’t going to happen overnight but Danny honestly hoped that in time Riley would find a way to move on from it. Until then he knew that he was going to be there to support the other boy every step of the way and in whatever way he needed him. Even before Riley had asked him to stay over that night Danny had already known that he wasn’t going anywhere so he hadn’t had to think twice about his answer. Not only did he not want Riley to have to go through the night alone but he also wasn’t ready to leave Riley just yet either. Seeing him die that day had made Danny feel like his heart had been torn in two and even though it was slowly mending now that Riley was back where he belonged he knew that it would take a while for that to sink in so being away from Riley really wasn’t what he wanted at the moment. “I know you’re used to keeping what you’re going through to yourself but you don’t have to do that anymore, you don’t have to hide anything from me,” Danny assured him even though he knew that Riley was already aware of that. Danny had been fortunate enough while he was growing up to have his best friend Jackson by his side but Riley hadn’t had anyone that he could talk to about anything so Danny was determined to fill that role for him now as much as he could. As Riley kissed him again Danny felt a smile touch his lips. No matter what he knew that they would always have each other and that at least was something that they could both hold onto. “Would she really have been that bad?” he asked, his voice laced with amusement as he spoke. The truth was Danny wouldn’t have minded answering her questions but after everything that had happened that day it was the last thing that either of them needed so he was glad that they could avoid it for now. “You finally figured it out. Took you long enough,” Danny teased. It wasn’t the reason at all and he was pretty sure that Riley knew that but it was still fun to play along nonetheless. It wasn’t long before things turned more serious and as Riley told him to burn all of his clothes, Danny nodded. “I will,” he promised, knowing that he couldn’t blame Riley for it in the least. As Riley spoke again, Danny took the other boy’s hand in his. “I know but you won’t be alone, I’m going to be right next to you,” he assured him. In all honesty he would be more surprised if Riley didn’t dream about it but at least he wasn’t going to be alone. Gathering up the clothes that Riley had been wearing, Danny nodded towards the door. “Go and have that shower, I’ll take care of these,” he said, giving Riley’s hand a squeeze before heading outside so that he could destroy the clothes. He had picked up the pieces of his life when they had been scattered before, Riley truly believed he could do so again. This wasn’t on the same scale as being forced to leave a school he’d particularly liked or even on the same scale as being forced away from Hawaii without really getting to say goodbye that summer, but still, he’d picked himself up and dusted himself off each time the ground had been fallen from beneath him before. This time he had help with it too. From the moment he’d reunited with Danny at the High School Riley had been told that he wasn’t alone in this and more than ever today he believed it. Had he truly been alone the others wouldn’t have spent days searching for him when he’d gone missing, had he truly been alone they wouldn’t have all been around him when he’d been brought back from the other side. Hell, Riley thought, resisting the urge to test that his heart was really there again, he might not have been brought back at all. The thought of being left on the other side left a hollow sensation in the pit of his gut. He might have been forced to watch Danny pick up the pieces on this side and move on without him. If he wasn’t already dead, that image might have killed a part of him. He wanted Danny to be happy, more than anything in this world, but having had a taste of what he’d wanted for so long, Riley knew how much it would have devastated him. A second chance had been given to him though, one he could never thank the two warlocks for enough, and Riley was planning on doing everything possible to make the most of it. There were lessons he knew he’d have to learn to do that, the first of which Danny was cautioning him about now. It had been second nature to shoulder all burdens himself, mainly for a lack of anybody to help him. Now he had someone, multiple someones, to do that, Riley knew he’d have to grow used to sharing. It was time to use his grown up words and he did that now. ”I know,” Riley promised solemnly. ”It’ll take some work to force the words out sometimes but I’m going to do it. I promise.” He was going to keep every promise he’d made tonight and that included opening up to his parents about all of this at some point. Telling him that he was in love with Danny would be a thousand times easier than telling her that he was a werewolf, although it still wouldn’t be pretty. Riley grimaced faintly at Danny’s question, his nose wrinkling as he nodded. ”Way worse than you could probably imagine,” he admitted with a chuckle. ”She’s never known me to be with anybody and she’s inappropriately nosy at the best of times.” His mom didn’t believe in boundaries. If she’d intended to get someone half naked then she’d have come straight out and asked for it, not joked around it the way Danny had when he’d started to tease. ”It’s a shame there aren’t any beaches here,” he chuckled. The town had so much more that he was grateful for though. Especially Danny. Riley’s brows drew together as Danny took his hand, his throat working as he nodded. ”We’re in this together,” Riley managed hoarsely. Drawing in a breath, he peeled off his t-shirt, the jeans smeared with blood and filth, his boots, even his underwear. He nodded at Danny’s order, taking a step back. ”Come into the bathroom when you’re done?” Riley went now, heading through the house with the chill in the air covering him in goose flesh. His fingers were steady as he turned the hot water on, as he almost dove under it to wash the remnants of the ritual away.

From the moment he had realised that Riley was missing, Danny had been unable to shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen. He had known that Riley would never just leave town without saying goodbye, not after everything that had happened to them since the boy had arrived in Mystic Falls, and yet he had still been nowhere to be found. Danny had gone to great lengths to prove not just to himself but also to the others that Riley’s disappearance wasn’t intentional, he and Stiles had even done a little breaking and entering and found that all of Riley’s things were still at the house as was everything belonging to his parents. Danny had known there and then that something had to have happened to him but he had never expected events to unfold the way they had done. Had it not been for Henrik and Lukas then Riley could have been lost to them forever and that was something that Danny didn’t even want to think about. He knew that he and his friends were going to have to find a way to thank Henrik, Riley was the second person that the warlock had returned to them that they had thought was lost to them for good but at the moment all he could think about was Riley. He wasn’t ready to leave the other boy on his own yet, in fact Danny wasn’t sure that he would ever truly be ready for that having already lost him once, but for now he knew that he would just settle for making sure that Riley got through the night ok, everything else could wait until the morning. He had never felt pain like he had done that day, he had felt sure that his own heart had been ripped right out of his chest the same way that Riley’s had been but the boy was back with him where he belonged and even though Danny knew that he would never forget the sight of Riley lying there on the ground with the light no longer in his eyes he hoped that in time they would find a way to move on from it. “I’m going to hold you to that,” Danny assured him as he said that he would talk to him even if it took some effort. He knew that it was like trying to bottle everything up and he had found out the hard way that it didn’t always end well. Riley had been on his own without anyone to talk to for such a long time but he wasn’t on his own now and Danny knew that he would remind the boy of that as often as he had to in order to get it to sink in. Riley didn’t just have him, he had friends around him now as well and they all cared about him so Danny was determined to make sure that he always had someone to talk to if he needed it even if there were certain things that Riley might not necessarily feel comfortable talking to him about. “I’m sure she’ll get used to it eventually. She’ll have to because I’m not going anywhere,” Danny assured him. The idea of meeting Riley’s mom now that he had heard a little more about her made Danny slightly nervous but he knew that he would do it for Riley. The two of them were together now and he hoped that in time they would get to do all of the things that went with that. He wanted Riley to meet his parents too and there was so much more that he was looking forward to now that they had been given another chance. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “We don’t need a beach to be nearby to have an excuse,” he chuckled. “Besides, there are always the falls,” he added, a mischievous grin touching his lips as he looked over at his boyfriend. As Riley said that they were in this together, Danny nodded. “Always,” he said before taking the clothes that Riley handed him. “Of course,” he said as Riley spoke again. Disappearing just long enough to burn the clothes like he had promised and take a few minutes to get his head together, Danny made his way back into the house and grabbed a few towels from where Riley had shown him they were kept the last time he was at the house as well as some clean clothes before heading straight for the bathroom. “How are you doing in there?” he asked as he closed the door behind him and set the towels and clothes down on the side. He’d survived not only once, but twice. Riley hated to think of it in a way that suggested the third time he might not be so lucky but there was a possibility of that. Once upon a time the most dangerous thing he might’ve faced was a rattlesnake out in the woods or a stream that was running too fast for him to safely cross but his first near death experience had changed that. The bite hadn’t just pulled down the curtain and revealed this other world hidden behind it, it had pushed him into that world and left him open to things he never could’ve imagined. Hell, if his dad had written about this sort of thing even his most ardent fan would’ve turned away, laughing at the absolute ludicrousness of it. People weren’t bitten by werewolves in real life, they didn’t suddenly find themselves with hair trigger tempers and the ability to snap a kid’s arm with less effort than used to take to snap his fingers. They didn’t get used in rituals to break ancient binding spells either but he’d gone through that. Riley could remember every minute of it in stark detail despite the fact that he’d tried to push it from his brain from the moment he’d woken up to find out that two warlocks had managed to bring him back to life. He’d still been able to smell the dank water that had dripped through the tomb on his skin, couldn’t get the taste of the blood the witches had left for Grace off of his tongue. Riley wasn’t sure how long it would take to scrub that away. If he ended up more cat with nine lives than a third strike sucker it could be with him for decades to come. It would be a price worth paying though. An entire life with Danny where the only hardship might be admitting to his boyfriend when those thoughts drifted through his mind like smoke. He’d made that promise to Danny and Riley knew that he was going to keep it at any cost. Two swipes of that finger over his heart and he’d cemented that promise. It wasn’t going to always be easy but when the words stuck he’d find some way to drag them out and avoid that log jam of emotion in his throat that could make the anger inside of him spill out dangerously. There was already too much of a chance of that happening with his mom. She was an obstacle Riley knew he’d have to get over. He tilted his head from side to side, a grin curving his mouth at the thought that nothing was going to tear him and Danny apart now. ”I’m glad to hear it and maybe she will be too. It could take a while, you’re right, but all the embarrassment is absolutely worth it. If she ever goes too far … tell her to stop. Both of them need some boundaries.” The ones he’d tried to set have never stayed for long but that had been before … when they’d had all the power over him. They had none right now, especially at the distance they’d put themselves at. His parents wouldn’t have a clue if he was strolling around here buck naked, putting on a parade for his boyfriend. ”True,” Riley drawled slowly. ”I’m all for spending time out there together.” Riley’s throat felt like it closed up a little as Danny slipped outside, his ‘always’ still ringing in his ears. He drew in deep breaths as he headed for the bathroom and ducked under the spray. Riley stood, hands planted against the tiles, head down, water pouring over his skin, eyes staring down at the drain as water tinged with blood and dirt spiralled down it, until the bathroom door closed again. ”I think I must’ve gotten every disgusting substance in that tomb on me,” Riley admitted as he straightened up. He drew the shower door back, one corner of his mouth tilting up at Danny as he reached for the shower gel.

Danny had seen the pain that Scott and the others had gone through when they had lost Allison but until that day it was something that he had been fortunate enough to avoid feeling himself. He had known Allison a little so he had felt sad about her passing but more than anything his heart had gone out to those she had left behind. Danny knew that when it came to his own life he had been relatively blessed, while it was true that his best friend was now living in London with his parents he had others around him that he cared about now and he had a boyfriend that he loved. Seeing Riley surrounded by a ring of flames that day with no way of getting to him had left Danny feeling completely helpless and he hadn’t been able to do anything to stop what would happen next. He had never seen anyone killed before that day but Klaus had ripped Riley’s heart right out of his chest like it was nothing and perhaps to him it was but to Danny it had felt like his own heart had been ripped out too. From that moment until Riley gasped for breath once more his whole body had felt numb and even though he had been vaguely aware of what was going on around him none of it had registered. Now he knew that those images of what had happened to Riley would continue to haunt him but the boy was back with him where he belonged and Danny knew that in time that knowledge would chase those thoughts away. For now it was all still so raw but Danny knew that he had to set that aside and focus on Riley because no matter how bad he was feeling about the whole thing at the moment he knew that it had to be that much worse for Riley. The others would support him as much as they could too but none of them knew Riley like he did and Danny knew that the last thing he was going to do was let his boyfriend go through this alone. Ever since Riley first moved to Mystic Falls and they found each other again the two of them had been a team and Danny knew better than to let anything change that. He was doing his best to be strong for Riley and he hoped that it was having the desired effect because the last thing he wanted was for Riley to worry. “It wouldn’t really be my place,” Danny said carefully as Riley told him to tell his mom if she ever took things too far. He knew that Riley didn’t like the way that his parents treated him but at the end of the day they were still his parents and Danny knew that he wanted them to like him for Riley’s sake. The time would no doubt come when Riley would have to stand up to them one day and tell them what he wanted if he was going to stand a chance at getting it and when that did happen Danny knew that he would be right there with him but he knew that he couldn’t really tell Riley’s mom to give them some space especially if he was a guest in their home. As Riley said that he was all for spending some time together out by the falls, Danny felt a smile form on his face. “Then how about we head out there tomorrow? I think we’ve earned a day to ourselves,” he suggested. He knew that he would have to check in with the others and let them know how Riley was doing but with everything that had happened he knew that he wouldn’t turn down the chance to have some time alone with his boyfriend if he was up for it. Ducking outside so he could dispose of the clothes Riley had been wearing, Danny took the chance to check his phone and wasn’t surprised to see messages from his friends asking how Riley was. Sending a quick message back, Danny headed back inside and it wasn’t long before he reached the bathroom and he let his back rest against the door as he waited for Riley. “I wouldn’t be surprised, you were in there for a while,” he admitted before reaching for the shower gel and handing it to Riley. “Better make sure you get it all off.”RILEY PARKER

If it was possible to wash off your emotions as easily as blood or dirt life would’ve been a thousand times easier. Riley had never been one to wish anything away, not even the bad stuff if he could learn from it, but after the last couple of days, a part of him wished it was as easy as finding a little shower gel for the soul. Remembering it, dealing with it, would get easier with time, he knew that. Each word of what happened to him would have less weight to it once he managed to speak them aloud to Danny and the others but they would still be there in the back of his mind. Undoubtedly they’d wait until he was asleep and then creep out, insidiously slipping into his dreams until it was the sight of the blood staining Grace’s mouth in the dark mouth of the tunnel they’d been in that danced like sugar plums in his head. It had been the thing in the dark that’d occupied that space until recently. Both of them had eyes glowing in the dark, its eyes red, Grace’s normal until they’d been surrounded by those black veins that he hadn’t been able to understand at first. Both had almost been waiting for him when he’d made his move towards them, only with Grace he’d managed to stay untouched. Somewhere in that crypt, even with her new hunger burning in her veins, the two of them had managed to come to some sort of agreement. They’d both been determined to get out of there, to escape whatever it was those girls had in store for them, and they’d both ended up in a nightmare of the waking sort. Talking about what it would’ve been like if his parents had been here, Riley wondered what she had gone home to. Had someone been looking for her during those days she’d been gone? There hadn’t been anybody there at the quarry for her, just her small body laying on the ground with the warlocks standing over her when he’d come to. Riley knew he’d have to look for her tomorrow, to make sure she was doing OK. He’d do the same for Danny if his mom suddenly appeared tomorrow night and noticed her son wasn’t alone in his bed. ”Maybe it’s not,” Riley admitted with a sigh. ”But one way or another I need to keep her in check about this. She’d never get the opportunity to ruin anything but I don’t want this becoming something for her to get too crazy over.” His mom had never cared before, she certainly didn’t have the right to now. Even if his parents were around, there were places in town for them to be alone, as they had been in Hawaii. Riley hadn’t been expecting to get out to any of them for a while but as Danny suggested heading to the falls tomorrow, the thought seemed so right. The woods had always been his place, his safe harbour and he wasn’t about to let that change. He smiled back, his chest rising and falling with a deep, easy breath. ”You’re on. We could head out early in the morning, get a whole day outside.” He’d be able to suck in all the fresh air he’d been denied in those days he’d been gone. Fresh air, a hot shower, water that wasn’t rank and stagnant, it had been all he’d dreamed of along with Danny the entire time he’d been gone. Standing under the hot water, Riley was grateful for having most of those things already. ”Days,” Riley agreed on a sigh as he flipped the top off of the bottle Danny handed to him. ”They were waiting for me the night of the storm. I don’t know how the two of them got me there or why they chose the crypt. They sure as hell weren’t bothered about keeping us in decent conditions. Get my back?” Letting out a sigh, Riley turned, letting the water start sluicing down over his legs as he ran soapy hands over his chest, washing away flakes of dried blood.

The moment Danny had realised that Riley was missing he had known that something bad had happened. The worry of Riley’s parents taking him away without giving them the chance to say goodbye had always been there at the back of his mind but he had believed that Riley would have found a way to tell him what was going on. As it was it had been days since he had last seen or heard from Riley and even though Stiles had tried to convince him that it was nothing to worry about Danny had known better. When it came to Riley he knew him better than anyone and he knew that the other boy wouldn’t have left without a fight. Danny had managed to rope Stiles and Scott into helping him search the town for his boyfriend but he had never thought that they would find him the way that they had done. Danny had known right from the start that Mystic Falls was a dangerous town but he had never thought that the events of that day would end up unfolding. The sight of Riley’s heart being ripped out of his chest was something that he knew he wasn’t going to be able to stop seeing for a long time so he was glad that Riley didn’t want to be left alone that evening. Danny had never experienced pain like that before but now he knew how Scott must have felt with Allison died. It was something that no one deserved to have to go through but Riley had been brought back the same way that Allison had and Danny knew that he wasn’t going to waste a moment of the time he had with the other boy. He had never felt like this about anyone before and he knew that he wasn’t going to let that be taken away again. “Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out,” Danny assured him. After everything they had been through he knew that he wasn’t going to let Riley’s mom come between them now. They were both old enough to know what they wanted and they had been torn apart twice already so he knew that they weren’t going to let that happen again. If it came down to it then Danny knew that they could always spend time at his place. His parents weren’t likely to embarrass him much if at all and he knew that they wouldn’t mind so it wouldn’t be the end of the world. There were other places around Mystic Falls that they could make their own too so he knew that it wouldn’t be a problem. As Riley spoke again, Danny felt a smile form on his face. “That sounds great,” he nodded. Not only would it mean that he got to spend the whole day with Riley but it would also mean that Riley wouldn’t have to worry about being cooped up again and he was pretty sure that would be a good thing. “I suppose they didn’t need to for what they had planned, I’m just so glad Henrik and Lukas were there,” he admitted. If they hadn’t been then he and Riley wouldn’t be together now and that was something that Danny didn’t even want to think about. “Sure,” he nodded as Riley asked him to get his back, letting his hands run over Riley’s skin before pressing a kiss to his shoulder. “Feel better?”RILEY PARKER

It had been a maze. Not just the months since he’d been bitten in Bear Creek, but his entire life. Riley could see now that the entire time his parents had been walling him in, forcing him down paths they had designed, denying him any sort of escape to the life he knew existed outside of those impenetrable walls. Other people were living free, getting to decide their own path in life but he hadn’t been able to, not until he’d suddenly had a glimpse through that barrier. Danny had made it all so clear in Hawaii, had cemented his determination to break out of that maze one day. Without the bite it might’ve taken him longer to fight his way free, to find his way back to the other boy to see if what had happened that summer could go anywhere, but it would’ve happened eventually. The Alpha going after him the way he had merely hastened things and while Niklaus Mikaelson had killed three people out of some selfish desire that he still didn’t entirely understand, the side effect of it was that suddenly things were even clearer to him. More than ever he didn’t want his parents to be in control of his life, he didn’t want to have to live worried about what they thought and what they were going to do. He’d been dead for Christ’s sake, if that didn’t change a guy’s viewpoint on things then nothing would, and Riley didn’t want to be that guy who’d stared mortality in the face and not been affected by it. His shoulders slumping faintly with his sigh, relief loosening the knots that seemed to have become permanently embedded in his muscles in the last couple of years, Riley let his decision filter through him. With Danny at his side he’d be able to keep to that resolution. One corner of his mouth lifted almost tiredly. ”Together,” he said, knowing that the word held real weight for them now. Since he’d come clean to Danny not a dozen feet from here about how he felt about him, it was a word he knew he could use without qualms. They were a couple and he’d leaned on Danny knowing that his boyfriend would hold him up through it all. Riley didn’t want his entire life to be spent drowning Danny with his problems but the knowledge that the boy he loved had the strength to hold on through things like what had happened today meant the world to him. Somehow he was going to show that gratitude, to start living the life the two of them deserved. A trace of rue touched the chuckle that rose as he thought about getting out into the woods tomorrow. ”I’d say we could do the whole picnic thing but there’s probably nothing but a slowly mutating new lifeform in the fridge.” He’d been gone for days, his parents not returning in that time. The thought continued to play through Riley’s head while he stood in the shower, the grime of each of those days and the blood that had stained his skin from the wound Niklaus had punched through his ribs circling down the drain. He swallowed hard, meeting Danny’s eye as he poured the shower gel into his palms. ”Why treat people humanely when your only plan is to leave them dead in a quarry,” Riley said grimly. Maybe they’d thought he and Grace would be too consumed with killing each other in the cave to worry about anything else. ”Me too,” he admitted hoarsely as Danny’s hands ran over his back. Riley planted his hands on the tiles and let his head hang as Danny kissed his shoulder. ”Miles better now I’m back here with you. It still feels so strange.” One minute he’d been there, on the other side, desperately searching for Danny, the next he’d been back in the quarry, his boyfriend leaning over him with tears in his eyes.

Ever since Danny had started taking his grandparents seriously about the stories they had always tried to tell him when he was growing up they had warned him that getting involved in the supernatural world would be dangerous. Once he got involved there could be no going back from it and it might eventually end up being the death of him but in order to help his friends Danny had been willing to take that risk. After Jackson and Ethan left Beacon Hills he had been left completely on his own, while it was true that he’d had other friends including Scott, Stiles and Lydia it just hadn’t been the same. He had known that something was missing from his life and learning more about his heritage had helped him fill that void. When he had returned to Beacon Hills after his trip to Hawaii and learned that his friends had all moved across the country he had known that he had no choice but to follow them. He had known when he had arrived in the town that Scott had been a little cautious and his friend had explained that he hadn’t wanted someone else to end up getting caught up in his world but Danny had made his decision the moment he had learned what had happened to Allison and he knew that he wouldn’t take back the decision to follow them even now. Not only had he forged stronger bonds with the gang but he had also been reunited with Riley. Even after the rollercoaster that day had been he knew that he wouldn’t take back being with him for anything in the world. Their time together over the summer had been short but Danny had still ended up falling for him and now that they were together he knew that he didn’t want anything to tear them apart. He was pretty sure that it would be a while before he could shake the nightmares that were bound to come after seeing Riley’s heart being ripped right out of his chest but those were something that Danny was more than willing to face if it meant that they got to continue to be together. As Riley spoke, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “We can always stop by mine and I can rustle us up something or we can go to the Grill and grab something on the way. We’ll have to restock your fridge at some point,” he chuckled. The truth was as long as he got to spend the day with Riley after everything that had happened then Danny knew that he would be happy but he also wanted to make sure that Riley took care of himself and if that meant making sure that he ate properly then Danny was more than prepared to do it. After everything he had been through that day he was pretty sure that it would help anyway. “That’s true,” Danny muttered as Riley spoke again. It still made his blood boil that Klaus had been prepared to use three innocent people like that but he was just glad that Henrik and Lukas had been on hand to bring them back. From a selfish point of view he had already faced the possibility of life without Riley once when they parted ways in Hawaii and it definitely wasn’t something that Danny wanted to find himself facing ever again and he wasn’t sure that his friends could face losing another person they cared about either. Seeing Riley lean against the tiles as he kissed his shoulder was enough to bring a smile to Danny’s lips and he ran his hand gently down his boyfriend’s arm. “I bet it does but hopefully you’ll feel better after you get some rest,” he offered, knowing that Riley had to be exhausted after everything that he had been through. “You definitely look like you again.”RILEY PARKER

Most things in life weren’t as easy to wash off as blood. Most things went more than skin deep, burning their way deep down inside of you where no amount of scrubbing would free you of their effects. On the morning after he’d been bitten he’d stood in a shower not unlike this one, his knees trembling faintly as he’d watched the blood and mud swirling down the drain. Riley hadn’t been able to bring himself to look in the mirror after he’d tugged his tattered t-shirt awkwardly over his head. He’d stood under the shower, the hot water stinging the bite on his shoulder, knowing that somehow he was in trouble. There’d been no one to talk him through what the hell was going on beneath the skin then, nobody to warn him just how much things were going to change. He’d been through a lot of changes since then, finding Danny again, ending up with a pack around him, finding himself what he was considering a home … all of that made a difference to what was going on in his head now. What had happened in the caves, at the quarry, was a thousand times worse than what had happened in Bear Creek but somehow, with Danny here, it felt like he was going to come away with it stronger, not weaker. His legs were steady as he stood in the shower this time, his mind soothed by the sound of Danny’s voice and the thought that he wasn’t going to be curled up in his bed, his mind tangled with torment by the memory of what had happened today. This was a second chance to do everything right, a fresh start. And they would take their first step in that tomorrow by not shying away from the woods that he’d loved from the moment he’d moved here. Head high, his hand in Danny’s, they’d hike up through the woods to the Falls and he’d be able to breath deeply, not scared of what was ahead of him. Riley huffed a laugh, his hands running over his face before they speared up into his wet hair. ”My dad was probably kind enough to leave some money in the house to do just that, or he’ll have left another credit card behind. They’re great that way, ready throw money at the kid they leave to watch out for himself.” Despite his comment he’d use the money for now, once he was graduated Riley had no plans to lean on either one of them. ”That sounds good though. I haven’t eaten since the night they took me.” In the dark there’d been too much to worry about to consider the fact that they weren’t bothering to feed him. The witches weren’t bothered about keeping him well fed, they’d only left blood for Grace to stop her from killing him in new born vampire hunger. Riley knew he’d been blunt saying what it had been like to Danny and concern filled his eyes as he studied his boyfriend. Danny moved in closer as he leaned against the tiles, the water warm on the back of his neck. ”Rest and food and I’ll be feeling a lot more human,” he promised. His muscles lost all tension as the grim thoughts swirled down the drain with the water. Riley turned, a smile touching his lips as he eyed Danny. ”I feel a lot more like me again. You gave that back to me. You and Lukas and Henrik and everybody else. You brought me back here to you. Thank you.” Ignoring the water splashing down around him, Riley curled a hand under Danny’s elbow, drawing him into the shower to kiss him.

It would be so easy to wallow in the awful events that had happened that day and Danny was certain that the nightmares were sure to come the moment he closed his eyes but at the end of the day Riley had been brought back to him and for that he was grateful. They had been through so much during their time together, more than most people could probably even begin to imagine, but if anything all of the trials and tribulations had made them even stronger. Every time he had ended up getting his heart broken in the past his parents had done their best to remind him that not all teenage romances were made to last but with Riley it felt different. What should have been a simple summer romance had turned into something much more lasting and Danny knew that he was a better person because of it. Even when life had torn them apart not just once but twice they had found their way back to one another and he knew that he would fight for what he and Riley had. The events that had unfolded that day were ones that he knew he would never forget but rather than letting them consume him he knew that he just had to use them to remind him just what he had to lose if he and his friends failed to protect someone else that they cared about. Danny had seen the way that Scott had fallen apart after Allison died and he had done the same thing himself that day when Riley died so losing someone else in the same way just wasn’t an option. Danny knew that everything that had happened had to be more difficult for Riley, Tatia and Grace to deal with than the rest of them so for the time being his sole concern was making sure that Riley was ok. He had been through something terrible and Danny knew that that had to leave a mark but so far Riley seemed to be coping remarkably well and Danny was glad that his boyfriend’s parents weren’t home to make things awkward. From what Riley had told him they weren’t the most attentive parents in the world so he wasn’t entirely sure that they would notice that he had been through something traumatic anyway but either way Danny knew that he wasn’t ready to let his boyfriend out of his sight just yet. “You’ll never be on your own while I’m around,” Danny assured him. While it was true that they weren’t joined at the hip and they needed some time to themselves every now and then he was only a phone call away if Riley ever needed him and he knew that worked both ways as well. As Riley said he hadn’t eaten since the night he was taken Danny couldn’t deny that he was surprised. He had known that Klaus had no reason to look after those he had captured but he had still expected better than that. “I can order in if you’re hungry now,” he offered, knowing that he was more than happy to do whatever he could in order to make this better for Riley. He had seemed exhausted on the drive back but Danny knew that sleep could always wait until after Riley had eaten if he wanted. As Riley spoke again, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “You don’t need to thank me. I told you I’m not losing you again and I meant it,” he assured him, not protesting as he was drawn into the shower and into a kiss. “You know, this is starting to become a habit of ours,” he chuckled as the kiss broke before pressing his lips to Riley’s once more. The day they had got back together Riley had done something very similar and the thought alone was enough to make Danny smile. “I love you.”RILEY PARKER

The nightmare was over. It was something that he tried to convince himself was true before but each time, after each disaster that rocked his life, Riley still felt that itch between his shoulder blades, heard that nagging voice in his head that told him the worst was yet to come. The morning after he’d broken Greg’s arm he’d stood in the shower in Bear Creek laughing almost hysterically at the thought. Then it didn’t seem like it could possibly get any worse than it already was. Any day then he’d expected his dad to tell him to pack up, that his agent had booked him for a signing clear across the other side of the country, he’d already been forced to walk away from Danny, although that had been inevitable with Danny having to go back to his own life at the end of the summer and he’d been savaged by what he was pretty sure was a werewolf. He’d been teetering on the edge of completely losing his mind when his dad had called him into the living room and they’d talked for the first time in what had felt like forever. His dad had given in pretty easily about the move and he hadn’t been able to help but feel suspicious about that. It had been too easy, the cost far too small, although Niklaus had extracted that the rest of that from him now. Surely his death had been enough payment for a quiet life now, for that constant dark cloud to finally away and let him have a peaceful life in a town where being a werewolf wasn’t some automatic death sentence. Just a couple of years here without more blood shed would be an amazing start, a way for him and Danny to see just how far the two of them were going to be able to go. It was going to be pretty damn far if the world didn’t make a liar of Danny. Riley felt relief slip deeper into his guts as Danny reassured him. Riley’s life drained away, his smile filled with gratitude as he dropped his hands away from his face to look at Danny. ”You have no idea how grateful I am for that,” he said softly. ”When I was … over there … you were the one person I was looking for.” Danny had been the first thought in his mind, the name on his lips as he’d called out into all that empty air. His parents hadn’t entered his mind until he’d finally been able to let go of Danny, his heartrate somewhere south of jack rabbit finally. They hadn’t noticed his absence when they’d come home and God only knew how many hours they’d spent in the house before they’d breezed off to where the hell they were going next. They likely wouldn’t have noticed unless they’d tripped over his body on the way in. He’d always had to take care of himself, to take care of his dad to make sure he wasn’t withering away at his laptop. It felt strange but a good kind of strange to have someone concerned about him the way Danny was. ”I’m definitely hungry,” he admitted, dropping a hand to his stomach. ”The only thing they tossed into those tunnels other than us was enough blood to make sure Grace turned properly.” When that had run out they were both fighting hunger. Thanks to Henrik and Lukas they’d both made it through and that meant he was alive now to pull his boyfriend into the shower, to whisper ‘thank you’ against his mouth even as he was told not to. Riley shook his head as he let his hand rose to Danny’s jaw. ”I know you did but I needed to say it anyway. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” His lips curved as Danny snatched a moment for air, a trace of mischief in his eyes. ”Doesn’t seem like such a bad habit to me. I love you too.” Pressing a kiss to Danny’s cheek, Riley moved closer, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend to draw him in to a fierce hug. There was nothing better than the feeling of still being able to say that.

Danny had seen the pain that Scott and the others had gone through after they had lost Allison but the truth was that he hadn’t known her that well before she died so he hadn’t felt that same level of pain. Seeing Riley die that day had been a completely different matter, however, and Danny had felt like his heart was being ripped out too. He had never been good at choosing guys who were genuinely decent people but he knew that he had ended up getting really lucky with Riley. He was incredible and even though Danny had never thought that he would end up dating a werewolf again the truth was that he really didn’t mind at all. He had known who Riley was before he was bitten and he knew who he was now. He was still the same amazing person that Danny had fallen for that summer in Hawaii and he knew that nothing was going to change that. Even though he had known that Riley was gone he still hadn’t wanted to leave his side but he was glad that Scott had dragged him away so that Henrik and Lukas could do their thing. He knew that he was never going to be able to thank them enough for bringing Riley back and he knew better than to waste the third chance that he had been given with the guy he loved. They had already gone their separate ways once when Riley left Hawaii at the end of the summer and that had been bad enough even though it was before they had admitted what was really going on between them so he knew that he didn’t want anything to happen to pull them apart again. As Riley spoke, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere,” he assured him. He had already gone through the pain of losing Riley and that pain was strong enough that he never wanted to go through it again. He hadn’t planned on falling for him when they met but that was exactly what had happened and he knew that he would do anything to avoid going through something like that again. Danny knew that there were always going to be things that were unfortunately out of his control but he could control his own actions and he knew that he would never choose to walk away from Riley. “Then I should really go and order you some food,” Danny said although he couldn’t bring himself to move just yet, especially when Riley drew him into the shower too. It had been difficult enough leaving once so that he could dispose of Riley’s ruined clothes and even though he knew that Riley was back with him and that he was safe Danny still couldn’t shake the feeling that he might be taken away again. The feeling of Riley’s hand against his jaw was enough to snap Danny out of his thoughts and he felt a smile touch his lips. “You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me too, I never thought I would feel like this about anyone,” he admitted. He’d had more than his fair share of failed relationships before Riley came into his life but this was different and this time he was confident that they could make it last. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “It isn’t but you’re making it difficult to get anything else done,” he chuckled as he hugged Riley back, not that he really minded at all. “Come on, you have been in here long enough. Why don’t you get dressed and meet me in your room when you’re done and I’ll have ordered the food by then?” he suggested, stealing another kiss before reluctantly moving out of the shower. Now his own clothes were soaking wet so he knew that he would have to borrow some of Riley’s while they dried but he knew that wouldn’t matter. “I’ll see you in a minute,” he added, forcing himself to leave Riley alone in the bathroom as he grabbed his phone and rang the number of Riley’s favourite restaurant to order some food. Riley didn’t want to think what it would’ve been like to go through this without Danny here. The move to Mystic Falls had almost been made on a whim, a pin stuck in the globe to find somewhere he could settle down and hopefully go to college. Whitmore had been a big draw but arriving here, finding so much more than that made this the only place he wanted to be. Without a pack around him, friends around him, people willing to bring him back, he’d have been on the other side now, maybe watching through what the others had told him was almost a veil as his parents had continued on blithely without him. His dad would’ve come back in a week or two, his mom jetting off to somewhere else, and maybe not even noticed he wasn’t here until dinner had failed to be on the table. Who knew, maybe his dad would’ve sat there, working away until he was half starved and his brain finally shook itself free of the fictional world he lived in. Riley knew they’d have blamed it on him running away, as his father had blamed him breaking a kid’s arm on him lashing out, and would report him to the local’s sheriff station but unless his body was found he’d have been another of those missing people on the front pages of the Courier. There wouldn’t have been anybody he was looking for on the other side, nobody’s heart breaking over his death. If he had been brought back by Lukas and Henrik he’d have been like Grace, on his own, slipping away without anybody to lean on. A part of him wished they could’ve convinced her to come with them but it had been just him and Danny slipping into the house, just him for Danny to take care of. Relief was rolling through the pit of Riley’s stomach like a cool breeze. His mouth curled at a corner, his heart lodging up in his throat. ”I’m promising you the same thing. That was the last time, I’ve never going anywhere again.” It was a promise he might not be able to keep but by God would he die trying to make it happen. They’d already been split apart too many times. He wouldn’t do it to Danny again. This was something that they needed, some time on an even keel where both of them could recover from what had happened. With the mud and blood washed from his skin, some food in his stomach, all he was going to want to do was curl up with Danny, not letting go of the man he loved. ”A metric ton of food,” Riley quipped. He knew he was getting Danny soaked but he held on anyway, his hand finding Danny’s face as his boyfriend began to drift. ”Fate knew what it was doing,” he whispered softly. ”Neither one of us expected this but we got it anyway and I needed it, I wanted this from the moment I saw you on the beach.” The realist in his head had warned that nothing that came of that friendship could last but his heart was proving that voice oh so wrong. Laughing lightly Riley tucked his face into Danny’s throat for a moment, letting his eyes slip shut. ”If I wasn’t pruning up and I wasn’t getting you soaking wet I might’ve said that wasn’t such a problem either.” But he drew back as Danny did, his mouth curving into the kiss before Danny stepped out of the shower. ”I won’t be a minute,” he promised. ”There’s dry stuff in the drawers, help yourself.” Riley’s throat ached faintly as Danny stepped from the room. He drew in a deep breath, letting the water pour over his head just a moment more before he turned the shower off and stepped out. Feeling human again in sweat pants and a t-shirt, he stepped from the bathroom into his bedroom. ”It feels better. Now I’m ready to eat a horse and collapse into bed.” All his needs would’ve been taken care of, the only one left the one he was going to curl around.

Danny had lived through getting his heart broken before and he had seen what could happen when the person you loved died since had had watched Scott go through just that but he had never thought that he would end up experiencing the latter for himself. He had chosen to be a part of the supernatural world, he knew the risks but when he had learned about what his friends were going to try and do in Mystic Falls he had known that it was about time that he stepped up the way his grandparents had done before him and given them whatever help he could. He respected his parents’ decision not to put any faith in their druid heritage but he wasn’t his parents and he was glad that they in turn had respected his decision to help his friends and had done what they could in order to make it happen. Ever since arriving in Mystic Falls he had learned more about the supernatural world than he had ever thought possible but nothing could have prepared him for the ritual that had taken place that day. The moment he had realised that Riley was missing he had been unable to shake the feeling that something was very wrong. His friends had tried to tell him that perhaps it was just Riley’s dad doing what he did best and putting his own needs before those of his son but Danny had known that Riley wouldn’t leave without saying goodbye, not this time, so the only alternative in this mind was that something awful had happened and he couldn’t have been more right. Standing there watching Riley having his heart ripped out Danny had never felt more helpless in his life and as life had been returned to his boyfriend he had promised himself that he was going to do better, that he was going to make sure that he didn’t lose anyone else that he loved. Riley had never asked to become a part of the supernatural world, he was an innocent in all of this and the thought of that not mattering to Klaus pained him. He knew that the Original had only wanted to free his werewolf side no matter what it might cost others but the reality of the lengths that he had been prepared to go to in order to make that happen had still surprised him. Now Danny was just grateful that Riley was back with him where he belonged and even though he knew that the memories of what had happened would likely never leave either of them, the fact that they had managed to make it through something like that still counted for a lot and he knew that they would be ready for whatever life threw their way next. “I’m going to hold you to that,” Danny said, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at Riley. He hadn’t known what would happen after they graduated but he honestly believed Riley when he said that he wasn’t going anywhere again, he had to. “Got it,” he chuckled as Riley said that he wanted a lot of food. “If there is any left over we’ll have it in the morning.” He knew that they wouldn’t let it go to waste if he ordered too much. “I did too. I kept trying to come up with excuses to spend time with you and the surfing lessons turned out to be perfect,” he admitted with a smile. From the moment he first saw Riley he had felt something for the other guy and he had wanted to see where that might lead. “I needed this too. Before you I always seemed to fall for the wrong guy but this time I’ve finally got it right.” He hadn’t even known whether Riley was interested in guys in that way at first but over time they had grown closer and he had learned that the feeling was mutual and he knew that he didn’t want to lose that again. “It isn’t a problem,” he chuckled. It might not be a problem but he knew that now wasn’t the right time for what had happened the last time Riley had pulled him into the shower so he forced himself to pull away a little even though it was very reluctantly. Kissing Riley back, Danny nodded before stepping out of the shower and heading back into Riley’s room. Once he had ordered the food he pulled some dry clothes out of the drawers and got changed, leaving his own soaking wet clothes in a pile at the side of the room. It wasn’t long before Riley emerged and Danny took his boyfriend’s hand in his, leading him over to the bed and pulling him down next to him before wrapping his arms around Riley. “I’m glad you’re feeling better,” he admitted as he let his head rest against his boyfriend’s. “The food shouldn’t be long.”RILEY PARKER
