For a guy who’d come back from the dead just a couple of hours ago Riley was feeling strangely calm. The shock had left him shaky immediately after, his heart jack-rabbiting in his chest, his adrenalin high enough to have had him half turning if he hadn’t developed some sort of control over himself in the last couple of months, but once Danny had gotten him into the house and the evidence of the days he’d spent missing had started to wash down the drain all of that had begun to fade. Today the worst had happened, he’d been snatched from the person he loved the most, from his pack, even from his parents, but with the help of someone trying to make up for his brother’s wrongs, he was back. There was no guarantee that something wouldn’t happen again, especially in a town like Mystic Falls, but Riley knew that no matter what came now he would fight against it all, fight to get back to Danny. It was the best that any of them could promise, their lives not truly eternal in the way that the Mikaelsons’ were. No matter what happened, they were going to do their best to stay together, to stay alive. Fingers crossed this would be the last time they were torn apart in anyway. In less than a year they’d be in college and it truly wouldn’t matter what his parents wanted. All of the decisions were going to be his and no matter what it came down to, his choice was always going to be Danny. Studying his boyfriend, Riley felt those last feelings of dread and fear sliding away down the shower with the muddy water. Riley lifted his hand at Danny’s vow to hold him to what he’d said. He saluted with it first, then touched his fingers to his mouth, settling them over Danny’s heart. ”Best case scenario, you won’t have to,” he told him softly. He was going to hold on to that hope that the worst was behind them now. Klaus Mikaelson had what he wanted, he could leave town with his werewolf side free and no clue that the people he’d killed were back. Back and very much hungry. Riley had only been half joking about the metric ton of food, his wolf side had kept him going until he’d died, but it hadn’t filled his stomach. Ruefully he grinned about it. ”I’ve got a feeling there honestly won’t be much left. We might have to see what we can scrounge up something from whatever my parents might’ve left in the cupboards in the morning.” Or there was always the Grill. He could step out tomorrow morning with his head held high, breathing free air again. It would be like all of those mornings he’d left his dad behind in their holiday rental and had made his way down to the beach to Danny. ”I should’ve known there was an ulterior motive to you agreeing to give them to me,” he teased, knowing even if Danny hadn’t said yes he would’ve found some other way to spend time with him. Riley touched his lips to Danny’s forehead before ducking his head slightly to rest his own forehead there. ”We both got it right. All that happened before was just the two of us getting to the right place for this,” he promised. His head tucked into Danny’s throat, Riley just breathed deep knowing he couldn’t be in a better place now. Smiling, he lifted his head to touch his mouth to Danny’s. He might’ve kept them both there but he needed food and dry clothes and just a dozen hours spent wrapped around Danny in his bed. If he wasn’t so hungry they might not have even been in that order, Riley thought as he stepped into his bedroom. He allowed Danny to lead him over to the bed and ease him down. Drawing in a deep breath, he wrapped himself around Danny like he’d wanted. His lips curved up at the mention of the food. ”Feeling miles better and the food’s just the cherry on top. You doing OK?” Riley opened his eyes, his brows drawing together slightly as he wrapped an arm around his boyfriend.

Losing someone he loved was Danny’s worst fear and that day he had been faced with it. In the past he had always had a habit of falling for the wrong guys but with Riley he knew that he had finally managed to get it right. He had been cheated on in the past and he’d had his heart broken but he knew that he could trust Riley not to do either of those things. Even though they always had the threat of Riley’s parents dragging him away having over their heads they still found a way to make it work and together they were happy. That was something that Danny had wanted ever since he and Riley first met when they were in Hawaii but in the beginning it was only supposed to be a summer romance and nothing more. It was only when they found each other in Mystic Falls that it had developed into more than that but the truth was that the times they had spent together since then were the happiest Danny had ever had. The moment he had realised that Riley was missing he had known that there was more to it than there seemed, even if his dad had dragged him away then Danny was confident that Riley would have found a way to let him know but this time he had seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth and he had known that something awful was about to happen but he never could have imagined just what that would end up being. He had seen what losing Allison had done to Scott even though the two of them weren’t together when they died and that was something that he had never wanted to experience himself but that day he had. Now he knew what it was like to lose Riley and it was something that Danny knew he never wanted to experience again. He knew that the two of them had something special, there had been a strong bond between them from day one and he knew that he would fight with everything that he had to make sure that that wasn’t extinguished. “Here’s hoping,” Danny said, bringing his own hand up to cover the hand that Riley had placed on his heart. He knew that it was going to take time to get over the pain of losing Riley if he even was able to get over it but for now he felt relieved that they were together again and he knew that he needed to hold on to that. They had already been through so much together and Danny knew better than to think that the supernatural world was done with them just yet but they’d had a massive wake up call. Now he knew that he was really fighting for and he knew that he would do everything he could to make sure that they didn’t lose anyone else. “We’ll figure something out,” Danny assured him, knowing that even if it meant that they had to go out to eat in the morning then they could do that. There were plenty of places around Mystic Falls that they could go to or they could always order in again so he knew that they would be just fine. “It seemed like the easiest way and besides, you really needed the lessons,” he teased, nudging Riley’s arm playfully as he spoke. There was no way that a person could go to Hawaii without going surfing, it just wasn’t possible, so there was no way that he could have let Riley try it on his own anyway. “You’re right. Going through all of that just makes me appreciate what we have that much more,” Danny admitted, wrapping his arms around Riley as he settled against him before kissing him back gently. This time he honestly felt like he had got it right and he knew that he didn’t want anything to change that. It wasn’t long before Riley was dressed and Danny was leading him over to the bed so he could rest a little before the food arrived. As Riley wrapped himself around him, Danny’s arms wrapped around his boyfriend in return and he held him close. “I think so. It’ll take time to get the image of you lying there like that out of my mind but I’ll get there,” he answered honestly, knowing that there was no point in lying to him. It wasn’t much longer before the food arrived and Danny reluctantly got to his feet, heading to the front of the house and paying for the food before returning to Riley. “Dig in,” he encouraged as he set the bags down in front of him. All those self-help books he’d thumbed through when he’d been dragged along to his dad’s signings had spouted the idea of taking things one day at a time when they threatened to overwhelm you had always seemed like complete crap. Riley knew that non-fiction was often just as made up as the stuff that admitted to being pulled out of someone’s imagination and perhaps with a little of his mom flowing through his veins, he’d scoffed at those pigeon-step notions. He’d always wanted more than one day, more than a week in one place, he’d wanted to be able to set plans out in front of himself and actually see them through. More than ever he’d wanted that in Hawaii but the deadline had suddenly made those pigeon steps worth it. He’d tried to hold on to each of those days, make the most of them he possibly could but their leaving had always been on the horizon. Almost as soon as they’d settled down in Bear Creek the clock had started to speed up, rushing them from the moment he was bitten to the moment he’d been standing in that circle, watching Danny rush towards him even as Klaus’ hand had punched through his chest. On the other side time should maybe have lost its importance but all he’d wanted to do was get back here, have one more moment like this with Danny. Blessed as he’d been by Klaus’ own brother this was going to be more than just one moment. This had to be a lifetime, one that he could savour, that he could make his way through one breath at a time until he felt steady enough to nudge up that speed just a little. Riley drew in one of those breaths now, using the air he sucked in to help push away the thought of a worst case scenario rocking them again. It wasn’t going to happen, he told himself, crossing his fingers on Danny’s chest before his hand was covered. They deserved the best case scenario, heck, they deserved a lifetime of them. He didn’t believe they’d actually get that but right now he’d settle for even a few months without his parents arriving back to stir up more trouble, he needed time for those baby steps to work. Chucking wryly, Riley glanced down at his stomach and then back up at his boyfriend. ”We always do somehow.” Even when it had taken him months to get here, for the two of them to go through hell separately before they’d found one another again, they’d managed it. Almost from the moment they’d met Danny had been the one holding out a hand to him, steadying him. Colour rose in his cheeks as he laughed and tapped the back of his hand against Danny’s upper arm. ”I wasn’t that bad,” he countered, knowing that was only half the truth. He’d been pretty awful and if it hadn’t been for spotting Danny that first day he might never have even tried getting on a board in the first place. He had though, braving the water, mastering the board in the end, using that determination to push through everything that had led him to this place. Blue eyes slipping shut, Riley allowed himself to get lost in the kiss, in Danny’s hold for a moment. ”It made us see what we could’ve lost,” he breathed softly, pushing that loss out of his head again. Undoubtedly it would plague his dreams again tonight but as he settled on the bed with Danny, held close to all of that solid warmth, Riley knew he’d get through them with Danny here. His brows drew together as he traced his fingers over the nape of Danny’s neck. ”We both will,” he said on a breath as the doorbell finally rang. Riley eased himself to a sitting position as Danny made his way out to the door, scrubbing his hands over his drying hair. His smile was back, pulling tiredly at his mouth as he began to dig through the bags. ”I knew you were there,” he admitted as he opened one of the containers. ”Just before Klaus stepped into the circle, I saw you.” He’d hoped rescue had finally come but it had been too late to stop Klaus’ from performing his ritual anyway.

Danny had known that his life was going to change the moment he had decided to embrace his druid heritage but he had never thought that it would end up like this. It honestly felt like fate had intervened and brought Riley back into his life even after they had parted ways over the summer but as always life was cruel and unforgiving and it had looked like they were going to lose that chance at happiness before they had even had the chance to explore it properly. Danny and the others had tried as hard as they could to figure out what Klaus was planning and when it was going to take place but in the end nothing they had done had been good enough. As soon as Riley hadn’t shown up at his house when he’d said he would Danny had known that something was wrong and he had roped Stiles into helping him check Riley’s house so that they could try and figure out what had happened but in the end it hadn’t done them any good. Klaus had been ten steps ahead of them and even though they had found the site of the ritual in the end it had been too late. The ritual had already been under way and Danny had had no choice but to stand by and watch as the guy he loved had had his heart ripped out of his chest. That was something that Danny knew that he was never going to forget, nor was the pain that he had felt knowing that Riley was gone, but Riley and the others that had been used in the ritual had all been given another chance at life by Henrik and Lukas and for that Danny was grateful. Now he and Riley had the chance to do all of the things that they’d wanted to do and Danny knew that he was going to fight that much harder to make what they had work. That was something that Danny was pretty sure that they were on the same page with and as Riley agreed with him, Danny found himself nodding. No matter what happened they always seemed to find a way through it and he had no reason to believe that this time would be any different. That day was one that Danny would knew he was never going to forget for a number of reasons but even after all of the awful things that had happened that day he knew that he could at least hold on to the joy he’d felt when Riley had been returned to him. After seeing the pain the others had gone through when they’d lost Allison he had quickly realised that he never wanted to go through that same pain but it had happened anyway and he knew that they were all going to have to do a much better job of watching each other’s backs if they were going to stop anything like that happening again. As Riley said that his surfing wasn’t that bad, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You didn’t see yourself out there,” he chuckled. “Why did you decide to give it a go anyway? I wouldn’t have thought it was your kind of thing,” he admitted. That was something that he had always been curious about but he had never asked until now but his curiosity had ended up getting the better of him this time. It was a good distraction from what had happened that day but unfortunately it only lasted a few moments and before Danny knew it he was pouring everything he could into the kiss that he and Riley were sharing. It wasn’t long before the doorbell rang and Danny went to collect the food. Returning to Riley’s side, he opened a few of the other containers of food and was about to tuck in when Riley spoke again and Danny paused. “I tried to get to you and so did the others but Klaus’ witch created a barrier we couldn’t break through,” he explained, hoping that Riley would understand that it wasn’t through lack of trying. The last time he’d laid on this bed he’d been pissed at his parents, feeling that snarling anger he always associated with his werewolf side trying to claw its way out through his skin. They’d left again, taking his phone with them in the truck when they hadn’t bothered to give him the chance to grab his stuff, cutting their kid off in a home that neither one of them seemed to want to spend more than five minutes in. Riley knew he shouldn’t have let it get to him again but it had gotten under his skin enough to drive him out into what might’ve been a major storm. If he hadn’t done would the witches have found him another way? Probably. Or some other wolf would’ve turned up on their radar and it would’ve been someone else trapped in those caves with Grace. Maybe that wolf wouldn’t have had a pack to look for them, maybe that wolf wouldn’t have had someone they loved with all their heart to mourn when they were gone and maybe that wolf wouldn’t have been lucky enough to have people there to bring them back. Riley never would’ve called himself blessed before but when it came to those he had around him now and the life he’d been building in this house, in this town, he truly was. That was something he was going to grow used to and while it might knock him back a few steps to do it, he was determined to use those blessings to change the way things were with his parents. They were never going to be here with him the way Danny’s parents were, or Scott’s mom, or Stiles’ dad, but things were going to change in that regard while this … this thing between him and Danny … was going to honestly remain the best thing in his life. Once upon a time Riley hadn’t let himself believe that. What had gone on with Danny over the summer in Hawaii had been the brightest spot in his life then but from the first morning he’d stepped foot on the beach and had seen Danny flying over those waves Riley had known that there was an end date approaching for it all. One morning he was going to wake up and it would all come to an end with a rush to another airport. There had been brief moments though, when all of that was pushed from his mind, when Danny had eclipsed everything, as he was doing now. Riley snorted, dropping his hand to his boyfriend’s chest to nudge him lightly. ”I thought you were at least going to fluff my ego there.” His laughter faded to a smile, his hand flattening against Danny’s chest. ”Water’s always been my thing, but never that way. I kinda promised myself I’d try something new that summer but if it wasn’t for this incredible guy I spotted I might actually have chickened out.” Before they’d even spoken Danny had been his courage. Today he’d drawn on that again, fighting to get back from the moment he’d woken up on the other side alone. Riley had drawn back almost reluctantly from the kiss as the doorbell had rung. By the time Danny had returned from the front door he was upright, sitting cross legged on the rumpled covers. Riley picked up the chopsticks delivered with the food, holding them between his fingers as Danny paused. ”I know,” he said softly. He set the chopsticks down, reached for Danny’s hand. ”I could see you trying to get there and I know the witches were stopping you. There was nothing you could do, you can’t blame yourself for it.” He knew it was going to weigh on Danny’s shoulders anyway, on all of their shoulders. Everyone involved today was going to find that voice inside themselves whispering that maybe there was some way to stop it that they had missed.

One thing that Riley had come to realise lately was that things never seemed to happen easily for his friends. Just when things seemed like they were finally going their way something would happen to throw them all into a tailspin and Riley being abducted had certainly resulted in that. Danny knew that his friends cared about Riley but it was nowhere near as much as he did. He had fallen for the boy during the summer they had spent together in Hawaii and even though he had refused to believe that while they were there it hadn’t made those feelings any less real. He had tried to move on afterwards and he had failed miserably but as it turned out he needn’t have worried anyway. What they’d had was originally meant to be nothing more than a fleeting summer romance but now it was so much more than that and Danny knew that he would fight with everything that he had in order to make it work. He might not have Riley’s werewolf strength or abilities but he was still learning as much as he could about the supernatural world they all lived in and he was teaching himself how to fight and defend himself so he could be more use to them all in the future but it never felt like he was doing quite enough and he had yet to figure out how to change that. He had known that something was wrong the moment he had been unable to get hold of Riley and that feeling had proved to be impossible to shake. Stiles and the others had helped him look for his boyfriend but no matter where they looked it had seemed that Riley was nowhere to be found and that had terrified Danny. A part of him had wondered whether perhaps Riley’s dad had returned to town and made Riley move away with him but Danny knew that Riley never would have let that happen, nor would he have left without saying goodbye. Things were different now to the way they were while they were in Hawaii, the two of them were together and Danny knew that that meant just as much to Riley as it did to him and he was confident that Riley would fight for them just as hard as he would. Danny knew that everything that had happened that day would stay with him for the rest of his life but he also knew now just how precious that the time he had to spend with Riley was and he knew that he wasn’t going to take that for granted again. “I think you know me better than that,” he chuckled, his hand coming up to cover Riley’s as it rested against his chest. “I’m glad you didn’t, being able to spend time with you was the highlight of the summer,” he admitted. It had been pretty amusing teaching Riley how to surf but it had been worth it to get to know him better although even if he hadn’t wanted to learn then Danny was certain that their paths would still have crossed and they would have ended up doing something else anyway. It wasn’t long before Danny returned with the food and he soon began to tuck in. “Maybe not but I still do,” he admitted, pausing as he looked over at Riley. “Losing you today broke me, I never want to go through that again.”RILEY PARKER

Once upon a time he would’ve used the word nightmarish to describe the cycle he’d been stuck in with his parents but that had been before he’d experienced what nightmarish really was. The non-stop moves, the constant school changes, the never being able to put down roots had been frustrating and a massive inconvenience every damn time but until they’d hit Bear Creek and he’d been bitten it had never been deadly in the truest sense of the word. Riley would always describe it as nearly impossible to break out of. That summer in Hawaii it had paused. Not for the longest he’d ever stayed anywhere before Mystic Falls but on those days he’d spent on the beach with Danny or out on the water, his face full of the tangy spray of water, his legs aching as he’d flown over the waves on a board that threatened to spill him into them at any moment. Each morning he’d known it might be his last day there but he’d never let it spoil whatever time they had together. Maybe he should’ve been thinking the same when he’d hit Mystic Falls. After all that had happened he should’ve known better than to count his chickens and believe that despite his parents’ childish behavior he was staying in town for good, or at least as long as Danny was staying there. Before he’d had a chance to take back his rash behavior the witches had been knocking him out and as much as he’d wanted to believe that his friends were coming for him Riley had known there was a chance they’d never find him. He’d almost been right. They’d been there at the end only, rushing towards him as Klaus had taken his heart and his life had dimmed, taking him to that place. Riley could still feel the echoes of it in his mind. That emptiness, the one that had seemed to stretch around him for miles. He’d called out for Danny there, only finding him when he’d woken up to discover that Henrik and Lukas had brought him back to life, dragged him back from somewhere he would’ve been on his own. There hadn’t been anybody on the other side waiting for him, not like there had been for Tatia. All the people who truly mattered to him were here, in this town, in this bed. Riley’s smile was crooked, his fingers curling faintly beneath Danny’s, the tips vibrating to the beat of his heart. ”I do and you’ve been the best thing for my ego,” he said honestly. He’d always sworn he was independent, he could stand on his own two feet, but really, his parents had done a number on him over the years. ”I’m glad I didn’t either. It was the most incredible thing that had ever happened to me, you were the most incredible thing.” And he hadn’t lost that from his life. Riley was pretty sure he’d been close to Hell and back but he was still here and he still had Danny. Hunger had him preparing to tuck into it all, which smelled more amazing than anything he thought he’d ever eaten, but as Danny began to speak the chopsticks were set down again. ”I’m going to tell you every day that you don’t have to. I’m going to tell you every day you’re not going to lose me that way again. I can’t promise that, I’m not immortal but I’m going to fight every day to stay with you.” Leaning in, Riley kissed his boyfriend fiercely, brows furrowing until he drew back and managed a smile. ”I love you.” Stomach rumbling he reached for the chop sticks again, digging in like a starving man, which he truly had been.
