– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed nodded his head in agreement with Ben when he said that they had earned this, especially after everything that had taken place. A little break was what they needed and deserved which made him even more grateful that they were doing this and that they were also getting out of Mystic Falls. For now, at least. "Hey, in my defense, I never claimed to be good at modern terminology." Jed pointed out with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "See? I was close." That was his response when Ben pointed out it was oyster and not his first guess.
Jed let out a chuckle at Ben's words. "Oh, trust me, I'm not in the mood for that either." He said with a teasing tone of his voice. "Oh, yes it will." Jed definitely enjoyed the presence of Ben's hand on his thigh. It was, to say the least, really nice. Jed's expression turned thoughtful for a moment, fingers tapping on the steering wheel as he tried to think of what to buy. He knew that actually seeing the merchandise that was offered for sale would help him make up his mind faster and easier. "We can stop by the market, then. See what kinda goodies they have over there." Jed said with a nod of his head following, his eyes still relaxed on the road.
Jed's lips stretched into a smirk. "Oh yeah, I have no idea where they got that idea from. There's not a pair safer than both of us." Jed said with the same smirk still residing on his lips. Ben did die multiple times, Jed died once, and... yeah, Jed honestly didn't blame his parents for wanting them to stay safe but with Ben's bracelet on, the chances of them stumbling into danger were pretty slim. "Man, that honestly sounds like the dream." Jed nodded his head quickly at Ben's words. It still felt surreal that they had managed to find a way to put an end to Ben's attacks. Sure, the curse was still there but it was a small win that was worth celebrating. He hoped that soon the curse would be gone for good. "And hopefully soon, we'll kick that curse in the ass and get rid of it for good." Jed said with a determined nod of his head following. Though he doubted that Ben's father would make it easy for them. "I really am happy for you, Ben. You deserve this." Jed said a moment later, his smile sincere as always.

Ben knew that the squad had been through so much but there was a part of him that wondered if Jed had really taken the time to process what had happened to him as well. He always tried to be so strong for everyone around him but Jed had died and he had carried on as normal after that. Deep down Ben knew that each time he died it had an effect on him and he knew that he would always come back. It wasn’t like that for Jed and Ben knew that after everything that had happened this time away would do them both good. The fact that it was going to be Jed’s first time outside of Mystic Falls made it that much more special as well. “You’re the one that should be good with all of this,” Ben chuckled, knowing that Jed had at least grown up with it all. “You weren’t far off,” he agreed with a smile. “Besides, you’re cute when you get things wrong. At least then I’m not the only one,” he added. Ben knew that he still had a lot to learn but it did make him feel better that Jed didn’t get everything right either. “I didn’t think you would be,” Ben grinned. Dying really wasn’t fun and Ben knew that he didn’t want either of them to have to go through that again. He wanted them to have a long and happy life together without all the death that had rippled through it up until now. For the first time no monsters would be coming after him and it meant that he was free to enjoy his time with Jed without having to worry. “You know, I could get used to this,” he admitted as he watched the world pass them by on the other side of the windscreen. It was like they were in their own little world and Ben knew that was never going to be a bad thing. He still had one point of contact with Jed and even though it wasn’t as good as being able to hold his hand it was the best they could do right now and he was okay with that. “Sounds good to me, I’m sure we’ll find something they’ll like,” he nodded, knowing that it was the least they could do. “Exactly. I think they’ve got us confused with another couple,” Ben chuckled. He knew that Jed’s parents were actually spot on, trouble seemed to follow them wherever they went but Ben honestly hoped that those days were behind them now that he had the bracelet to stop the monsters from coming after him. It hadn’t stopped his father from attacking them but then again there were some things that were bound to happen no matter what. Heading to New Orleans might be risky given just how many people there were supernatural but Mystic Falls wasn’t any different so Ben knew that they would be fine. “It really does,” he agreed as Jed said that an attack free weekend sounded like the dream. As Jed spoke again, Ben nodded. “Hopefully but honestly as long as the monsters don’t come after me anymore I’ll be happy. It’s crazy to think that something as simple as a bracelet could do that,” he admitted. He knew that the bracelet was actually far from simple but the idea that it could stop monsters from being affected by his curse was still incredible to Ben. “We deserve this,” Ben corrected, a smile touching his lips as he squeezed Jed’s leg gently. “None of this would have been possible without you, you never gave up.”JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed released a chuckle at Ben’s words when he told him that he was the one who should be good at modern terminology. “Fair point. Alright, I’ll google some later tonight. I’ll blow your mind, just you wait.” Jed’s lips stretched into a smug smile when Ben told him that he wasn’t far off. His expression softened at Ben’s next words, pulling his eyes from the road for a moment, his lips stretching into a grin. “In that case, I’ll keep getting things wrong some more so you can continue thinkin’ I’m cute.” Jed teased in a light-hearted voice. “You’re pretty cute too when you get things wrong.”
Jed was definitely looking forward to their time together in New Orleans — he was pretty pleased that they won’t be dying any time soon during their time together, too. They had managed to temporarily find a solution to Ben’s curse. He absolutely cannot wait until they find a permanent one. They will find a way to deal with Ben’s dad at the same time, too. They were, after all, determined to make the angel pay. His eyes momentarily left the road to look at Ben, his expression softening a little. “It’s what you deserve, you know. You’ve been alive way longer than I have but you haven’t lived at all, have you? I mean, you always spent it looking over your shoulder, feeling watched or on edge. You never got to enjoy the things that we usually take for granted.” Jed’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment, his eyes relaxing on the road once again. “It’s about time you get to experience what life has to offer.” He hoped that he’d at least show Ben a little bit of that during their time together. “Oh, I don’t have a doubt in my mind about that. They’re the easiest two to buy gifts for.” Jed said with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
“Oh, absolutely.” Jed agreed with a grin forming on his lips already, knowing all too well that they always had trouble following them wherever they went. “I dunno how they got that impression from.” Jed said with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips. Truth be told, New Orleans wasn’t that different from what he has heard so far from others but it was still a nice change and he hoped they’d be able to have some fun in the meantime. “The power of magic is honestly — phenomenal.” Jed agreed with a quick nod of his head following, his eyes relaxing on Ben once again as he offered him a gentle smile. “It’s the least that I can do. You deserve to have someone who doesn’t give up on you.” Jed said with a gentle smile tugging at the corner of his lips, his hand momentarily resting on top of Ben’s again, giving it a gentle squeeze before he removed his hand to let it rest on the shift lever.

“I don’t doubt that,” Ben chuckled as Jed said he was going to google some terms later and blow his mind. “I’ve got so much to learn.” It was daunting but the truth was that Ben wanted to learn as much as he could because the last thing he wanted to do was to end up embarrassing Jed. He was slowly coming to terms with some of the things that Jed had been teaching him but Ben knew that there was still a lot that he didn’t know and there was plenty that he could teach Jed as well. They were alike in that respect and he didn’t doubt that they would figure it out together the same way they always did. As Jed spoke again, Ben felt a smile form on his face. “You don’t need to worry about that, I always think you’re cute,” Ben assured him. It didn’t matter what Jed did, Ben would always think of him that way and that was never going to change. “There’s just something about you that I can’t resist,” he added with a grin. It had been that way ever since the day they met and Ben knew that it went so far beyond the way Jed looked. The two of them connected on a much deeper level and Ben knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m glad you think so because I get things wrong a lot of the time,” Ben chuckled. He did his best but it wasn’t always easy and that was something that he had learned to accept. It was a long way to New Orleans from Mystic Falls but Ben knew that it would be worth it when they got there. Jed had never been outside of Mystic Falls and Ben knew that he wanted to make this trip special for him. It was their first time going away together and Ben knew that after everything that had happened it was something they needed even if it was only for a few days. Going on a trip like this without having to worry about monsters coming after him was something that Ben had always wanted to do and it still felt a little surreal to know that he finally had the chance but he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. “You’re the first person who has really felt that way,” Ben admitted as Jed said that this was what he deserved. Others had tried to help him because he had agreed to give him something in return but Jed had done it because he’d cared and that meant the world to Ben. “You’re right I haven’t lived, I’ve only existed,” he said gently. “I’ve travelled and I’ve fought in wars to protect those I can but I’ve never been able to build a life for myself anywhere the way I have in Mystic Falls and I’ve never seen myself having a future with anyone until you.” What form that future would take he wasn’t sure because it would depend on whether Jed chose to become immortal or not but either way Ben knew that he wanted to enjoy whatever time they had together. “I’m looking forward to doing all of that with you,” Ben nodded as Jed said that it was about time he got to experience what life had to offer. “I think you’re right about that, we’ll have to see what we can find,” he grinned. “We’ll have to correct them when we get back and fill them in on just how boring our trip was,” Ben chuckled. His words were teasing but the truth was he really did hope that their trip would be uneventful to an extent. He wanted them to have fun but as long as they didn’t end up getting into trouble then that was fine with him. “It really is,” he agreed as Jed said that magic was phenomenal. It had given Ben his life back and he knew better than to take that for granted. Looking down at their hands as Jed gave his hand a squeeze, Ben’s expression turned gentle. “You always seem to surprise me,” he admitted as Jed spoke again. “For what it’s worth I’m not giving up on you either, you’ve changed everything and I’m going to make the most of it.”JED SALTZMAN

Jed's lips stretched into a grin at Ben's words as he nodded his head a few times. "That you do." He let out a chuckle at Ben's words, finding them absolutely adorable. "Thank you." He replied when Ben told him that he always thinks that he's adorable. "You're giving me too much power here. You shouldn't have told me that because now I know my effect on you." Jed's lips stretched into a grin as he said that, his eyes still fixed on the road ahead. "Oh, you do. It's pretty cute."
Jed felt a small smile stretch on his lips as he listened to Ben. "In that case, I'm glad to be the first." He said with a quick nod of his head following. He was quiet as he listened to Ben, nodding his head along to let the other know that he was listening. "I'm really glad that you get that chance now." Jed said with a sincere smile on his lips. "I'm pretty sure I'm gonna start sounding like a broken record, but it's what you deserve, Ben." Jed said with a quick nod of his head following, meaning every word. "I'm looking forward to doing all of that with you too, Ben. It's going to be wonderful." His voice was soft as he spoke. When Ben mentioned that they will have to see what they can find, he nodded his head in agreement, knowing that they'll probably food some good stuff once they take a look around town.
Jed chuckled at Ben's words before he nodded his head a few times in agreement. "Oh, definitely. We are a perfectly normal couple living perfectly normal lives." Ben's next words were enough to make his smile soften again. "In good ways, I hope?" Jed asked, his softened gaze settling on Ben once again. "That makes me really happy." Jed admitted in a soft voice. "In this case, I'm going to cherish every second with you, too."

“Luckily I have you to teach me,” Ben grinned. He knew that there was a lot that he didn’t know but Jed was proving to be a really good teacher and Ben was grateful to him. He had already learned so much from Jed and Ben knew that they were only just getting started, he only hoped that he would be able to teach Jed some things in return. Jed had already done so much for him and Ben wasn’t sure that he would ever truly be able to repay him but he knew that he wasn’t going to stop trying. “I thought you knew that already,” he chuckled as Jed said that he now knew the effect he had on him. “It’s alright, I trust you,” he added, knowing that Jed wouldn’t abuse that power too much. “I’m glad you think so. Maybe I can use that to my advantage,” he teased. As Jed said he was glad to be the first, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. “You’re the first in a lot of things,” he admitted. Jed wasn’t just the first guy to have genuinely wanted to help him because he felt that it was what he deserved, Jed was also the first person he had loved since Ashur died and he was the first person to have taken a chance on him. Ben really was grateful to him for that and he knew that he was going to be there for Jed in return. “So am I, it never would have been possible if not for you.” Jed had introduced him to the others and they had all done their best to help him. He had tried so many times to break his curse but nothing had worked so he knew that he wanted to make the most of this even if it was only temporary. “Thank you,” he said sincerely as Jed said it was what he deserved. As Jed spoke again, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. “It is. Have you decided what you want to do after graduation?” he asked, not sure whether Jed wanted to go to college straight away, take a gap year or do something else. They had been so focused on trying to make it through senior year that they hadn’t really talked too much about what would happen after but now they had the chance. “Exactly. They’ll see the error of their ways soon enough,” Ben chuckled. He knew that Jed’s parents were right, trouble did seem to have a habit of finding them but this time he knew that things would be different and he was looking forward to it. “Always,” he nodded as Jed said he hoped he surprised him in good ways. “I never know what I’m going to get with you but that makes our time together so much fun,” he added with a grin. As Jed said he was going to cherish every second with him, Ben’s expression softened. “You really know a way to a guy’s heart,” he said, leaning over and pressing a gentle kiss to his boyfriend’s cheek. “I love you.”JED SALTZMAN

Jed’s lips stretched into a grin at Ben’s words, nodding his head a few times. He was definitely going to be there to teach Ben. If he were to require assistance with languages, he’d also be his guy. He had watched enough italian series to be fluent. He knows how to ask for the bathroom very well. He can also easily ask for the bathroom. They will be just fine if they do travel to a foreign italian country. “Okay, yeah, I definitely knew that already.” Jed said with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after. He momentarily turned his attention to Ben, his grin stretching his lips once again as he shook his head fondly, finding Ben to be very adorable.
His expression softened at Ben’s admittance. “You’re the first in a lot of things for me too.” He said a moment later with a soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He shook his head gently with a small smile on his lips. “I have faith that you would have found Hope and Josie regardless. Good things happen to good people and you’re definitely one of the good people, Ben. I didn’t do much, really. It was just fate doing its part.” Jed added with a soft chuckle falling from his lips not long after.
“I was thinking of taking some time to focus on my pack, but that’s not set in stone yet.’ Jed revealed with a quick nod of his head following. “I was thinking of finding someone to rule the pack at school after me, actually. Since I’ll be heading off to college, I don’t wanna leave the pack back at school unattended. I don’t want them to ever feel lost.” Jed wasn’t attached to the title of being an Alpha. It was definitely a lot of responsibility that he had grown used to because of the fact that he had taken his father’s status from such a young age. “What about you?” Jed asked a moment later when he realized he’d been talking about himself for quite some time now.
Jed let out a chuckle at Ben’s words before he nodded his head in agreement. “I really traumatized you when I turned into a fire wolf, huh?” He said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips not long after. “Just your heart.” Jed said with a grin on his lips. “I love you, too.”

Ben might not be up to date with some of the terms Jed and others his age used or a lot of the things they talked about these days but he had been fortunate enough to have been able to travel the world and as such he had learned a few things along the way. Languages were something that Ben was normally quite quick at picking up but there were so many other things that he relied on Jed for and he only hoped that Jed meant it when he said that he didn’t mind teaching him. They had lived in very different worlds before they got together but there were things that Jed could teach him and there were also things that Ben could teach him in return and that just made their life together that much more interesting as far as Ben was concerned. “That really doesn’t surprise me,” Ben chuckled as Jed said that he definitely knew the effect he had on him. No one else had ever made him feel the way that Jed did and Ben knew that he was incredibly lucky to have found him. Seeing the way Jed shook his head was enough to make an amused smile touch Ben’s lips as he looked over at his boyfriend. “What is it?” he asked, not sure just what it was that had Jed reacting that way. Ben couldn’t stop a smile from touching his lips as Jed said that he was the first in a lot of things for him too. “You have no idea how happy I am to hear that,” he admitted. He knew that it wouldn’t have made a difference if he wasn’t but it did make those things more special as far as Ben was concerned. Jed had changed everything for him and Ben knew that he wanted to make the most of the time they had together, however long it might last. “You took a chance on me when very few would have done, I would have left the school as soon as I could if you hadn’t convinced me to stay,” he said gently. “You do a lot more for people than you could ever know,” he added, a loving smile touching his lips as he looked over at Jed. He looked after everyone around him and that was something to be admired as far as Ben was concerned. He knew that Jed was the reason why Ric had decided to let him stay so Ben was always going to be grateful to Jed for that. “You know I’ll support you whatever you decide but most are seniors like you and I think they’d follow you anywhere,” Ben assured him gently. “You’re an amazing Alpha.” He had seen how much they all looked up to Jed not just because he was their Alpha but because of how much he cared about all of them as well and it was clear that the pack felt the same way about him. As Jed asked what he was going to do next, Ben shrugged. “To be honest I haven’t really thought about it that much,” he admitted. “One thing I know for sure is that I’m never leaving you behind so wherever you want to go is fine with me, I’ll figure something out,” he added with a shrug. Ben had already seen and done a lot more than most people ever would so it was different for him to how it was for Jed. Jed was doing all of this for the first time but there were still things that Ben hadn’t done as well. “I’ve never stayed anywhere long enough to try the college thing so that could be interesting.”As Jed spoke again, Ben couldn’t help but laugh. “I guess traumatised is one word for it, you definitely scared me,” he admitted, his expression softening as he looked over at Jed. They were able to joke about it now but back then Ben was terrified that he would never get to see Jed again and he knew that he never wanted to ever feel that way again. “I guess one good thing came of it that day, I realised just how much I love you and we said those words for the first time.” Ben had suspected that he was falling for Jed for a while before that but the words had slipped out of his mouth with such ease and Ben had meant every one despite it being said in the heat of the moment. “That’s as it should be,” he grinned as Jed said that he only knew the way to Ben’s heart, his eyes full of nothing but love for Jed as he said he loved him too. “I wish you weren’t driving right now because I really want to kiss you,” he admitted. – I freed myself from words never said –
“Oh, nothing, just thinking about how adorable my boyfriend is.” Jed said with a grin stretching his lips not long after. He definitely found Ben to be very adorable at times, especially when he was confused. Jed’s expression softened as he listened to Ben. “I’m happy that you’re happy.” He pointed out a moment later, wanting Ben to know that. He recalled the time that Ben was talking about, remembering how he had insisted for Ben to stay on school grounds with him. “I’m really glad that you decided to stay.” Jed said a moment later. He never, for once, regretted asking Ben to stay with him at the school. It definitely changed a lot of things for him. In a good way. Jed’s attention momentarily drifted over to Ben, his lips stretching to form a genuine smile as he listened to him. His words were enough to make his heart flutter in a pleasant way.
“Yeah, I know. They’re great. I’m happy I have them. They’re the best pack any Alpha could ask for. Still, I’m pretty sure we’ll have new wolves coming in and I wanna leave someone behind who can take care of them. Then, that person will transfer their role when they graduate, too. Keep the cycle going while making sure that there’s always an Alpha present to lead because there’s nothing worse than an Alpha-less pack. It’s just — chaos. In some case, at least.” Jed pointed out, gnawing on his bottom lip momentarily as his shoulders lifted and dropped into a quick shrug. His attention drifted back to Ben, his compliment making his lips stretch into a genuine smile. “Thank you.” It was definitely a rough journey to get to that point. He had messed up many times in the past, but he was determined to be a better Alpha now. That’s what the other wolves deserve. “Oh, college is pretty cool, actually. A little intense at times, but cool.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following as his lips stretched to form a soft smile. He was excited about that, too.
“Yeah, I can definitely imagine.” Jed let out a brief chuckle falling from his lips not long after. “That’s true. See? Not so traumatizing.” Jed said with a grin stretching his lips not long after. “We turned a bad day into a good memory.” Now when he looks back on it, he just remembers exchanging ‘I love you’s with Ben. “Well, I mean—” Jed trailed off with a teasing little smile on his lips. “I can pull over. It’s pretty much just me on the road right now, anyway.” Jed suggested, his smile turning into a grin instead.

“Is that so?” Ben chuckled as Jed said he was just thinking about how adorable his boyfriend is. “I’m lucky you find my confusion and mistakes adorable rather than weird,” he added with a grin. Some of the students at the Salvatore School had given him a few odd looks when he’d ended up getting things wrong but word about who he was had spread around the school pretty quickly after that and it had definitely made it easier but some of those looks had remained. It had never been like that with Jed, he had always been so understanding and Ben was grateful to him for that. As Jed spoke again, Ben’s expression softened. “I’m happy because of you,” he said sincerely. Jed had given him the life that had always been beyond his grasp before and that was something that Ben was never going to forget. “So am I. If I hadn’t then we wouldn’t be together and I don’t even want to think about what leaving you behind would have been like.” He had tried to protest when Jed had been trying to convince him to stay but in the end he had lost that argument and Ben was glad about that. He had felt a connection to Jed from the moment they met and he hadn’t been strong enough to break that so he had stayed and he couldn’t deny that he was beyond happy with the life he had now. “It sounds like you’ve been thinking about this for a while, I think that’s a good idea,” Ben admitted. He would be lying if he said that he completely understood how the Alpha status worked but he was learning as much as he could about werewolves from Jed now and he knew that he wasn’t going to stop until he understood it all. In the past there had only ever been two kinds of creatures – those that had wanted to kill him and those that hadn’t – but now his world was so much bigger than that and Ben was glad that he had the chance to be a part of it at last. “That’s what I’ve heard too. To be honest it’s something I’ve always wanted to try but I’ve never been able to stay in one place long enough to do,” he shrugged. It was hard to even think about making any plans for the future when you knew that it was only a matter of time before the next monster came along to kill you and you’d have to move on but he didn’t have to worry about that now and Ben was definitely glad about that. “Are you thinking of staying at the Salvatore College or going somewhere else?” he asked, not sure what Jed had in mind. Ben knew that with everything he needed to catch up on the Salvatore College would probably be the better fit for him but he wouldn’t blame Jed for wanting to go somewhere else. As Jed said that he could imagine that he’d scared him, Ben couldn’t help but laugh along with him. “We did turn it into a good memory but I’d rather not repeat that day. I didn’t like you being upset with me the way you were either,” he said gently. He could understand why Jed had reacted the way he had done, Ben had been keeping the truth from him and disappearing until the monsters found him and killed him away from the school. His intentions had been good but he had let Jed down and he knew that he didn’t want to do that again. As Jed said he could pull over, Ben’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment before a half smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “What would you do if I said you should?” he teased, his expression playful as he looked over at his boyfriend. – I freed myself from words never said –
Jed wasn’t the type of person to judge anymore — it was more of a Jed 1.0 type of thing. That guy loved to judge and annoy the living shit out of people, he loved to dangle his status as an Alpha in front of the other wolves to get them to submit to him. Jed had worked hard to evolve beyond that. He had worked hard to show that he wasn’t that type of person anymore. So, of course he found Ben’s confusion to be adorable rather than weird. He was pretty sure that no matter what his boyfriend did, he’d always find actions to be extremely adorable. Jed’s expression softened when Ben told him that he was happy because of him. Jed, too, was happy because of Ben. “I’m happy because of you, too, Ben.” He can’t remember when was the last time he had felt this happy. So many things would’ve happened differently if Ben had decided to leave the school for good and he definitely shared the sentiment of not wanting to think about what could have happened if Ben had left the school. “I get that.” Jed said with a nod of his head following. Thankfully, Ben had decided to stay and so there was no reason for them to dwell on what could have happened if he had left instead.
“I mean, how can I not?” Jed breathed out with a soft chuckle falling from his lips not long after, his fingers tapping on the steering wheel as he adjusted the seatbelt with his free hand before letting his hand rest back on the shifter. “I’ll just have to keep an eye out and find someone who is… Alpha material, I guess.” Jed had no doubt that it was not going to be an easy task but he knew it was something he needed to take care of before heading off to college. He didn’t want to leave the school without an Alpha. It would just be a recipe for disaster, that’s for sure.
Jed’s brows quirked in surprise when Ben revealed that he’d never gone to college before. “In that case, we’ll experience it together, then. That’s okay.” He assured him with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he spoke. “Salvatore College. It’s where most of our friends are gonna go too, so.” Jed revealed with a quick nod of his head following. “I’d rather not go to a human college, if I’m being completely honest.” He’d been surrounded by supernatural students for so long that he forgot what it’d be like to be surrounded by humans instead. “What about you?”
Jed released a soft hum, remembering how upset he had been back then about Ben walking off on his own to die somewhere secluded away from the other students. He understood why Ben did it, but it still didn’t sit well with him. “Yeah, I know. Definitely no repeating.” Jed agreed, his eyes remaining on the road as he drove. A chuckle left his lips at Ben’s words before he glanced at the rearview mirror. As predicted, the road behind him was empty so he won’t exactly be bothering anyone if he were to signal to the right and park for a bit.
“Okay, y’know what, screw it.” Jed signaled first before he parked the van on the right. “We can afford a few minutes to ourselves before we keep driving.” He kept the engine going and turned to face Ben. “C’mere,”

Ben had spent such a long time feeling like he was never going to truly fit in anywhere. His curse had meant that he could never really build a life for himself anywhere, the monster attacks had come far too frequently for Ben to start building a life for himself and the truth was that he hadn’t thought that it would really change when he got to Mystic Falls. Heading there had seemed like a last ditch attempt at finally finding a way to break his curse and he hadn’t wanted to lose hope but he hadn’t wanted to let himself get too optimistic about his chances after failing so many times in the past. It was Jed that had convinced him to stay and give the Salvatore School a chance and listening to him was one of the best decisions that Ben had ever made. This life was what he had always wanted but had never thought he would get to have and Ben knew better than to take that for granted. Ben believed Jed when he said he’d changed but the guy he was now had captured Ben’s heart and he had found the person he wanted to share his future with whatever Jed decided about becoming immortal. As Jed said he was happy because of him too, Ben felt a smile touch his lips as his heart fluttered slightly. “I’m so glad it was you who found me that day.” Had it been anyone else then things might not have worked out like this and Ben knew that he was never going to regret the events that led him to meeting Jed. “I may not have known the old Jed but this one always looks out for everyone else and I’m pretty fond of him,” Ben grinned. He could see how much Jed was trying to do things differently this time around, he was putting everyone else before himself and Ben couldn’t deny that he was proud of the way Jed was already thinking about the future of his pack. Nodding as Jed said he was going to have to keep an eye out and find someone who was alpha material, Ben’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Have you got anyone in mind?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. He hadn’t known too much about werewolves when he’d arrived at the Salvatore School but he had learned a lot from Jed and the pack meant so much to Jed so Ben knew that he was always going to take an interest. Ben could see the surprised look on Jed’s face when he said that he had never gone to college before and as he said that they would experience it together, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. “I can’t wait,” he said sincerely. “It will be so much fun sharing it with you.” Being at the Salvatore School wasn’t easy for Ben because he was so far behind the other students but the staff had all been patient with him and Jed and their friends had been doing their best to help him catch up as well and Ben was truly grateful to them for that. The school had become a safe place to him and that was something that he’d never really had before. Ben had known that they would make it work no matter where Jed decided to go to college but he couldn’t deny that he was still relieved when Jed said he was going to go to the Salvatore College. “I was hoping you would say that,” he admitted before frowning for a moment as Jed said he would rather not go to a human college. “Why’s that?” he asked gently. “Don’t get me wrong, I want you to go to the Salvatore College but you’re great around humans so I know you would be fine if you decided to go to a human one instead.” There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that Jed would be fine no matter what he decided to do, he was one of those people who seemed able to adapt to just about anything and Ben was proud of him for that. “I’d like to go to the Salvatore College if I can. I know I’ve still got a lot to learn about this world and I think I can do that at the same time,” he admitted with a shrug. It would all depend on whether or not he was able to get a place at the college but he hoped that he would. “Don’t worry, there won’t be any repeats of that part of the day,” Ben assured him, knowing that he wasn’t going to put Jed in that position again. Ben had learned his lesson about keeping things from his boyfriend and he knew that he didn’t want to upset Jed like that again. Glancing over at Jed as he looked in the mirror, Ben couldn’t help but laugh at Jed’s words before he pulled over at the side of the road. “I like the way you think,” Ben admitted, a smile touching his lips as he unbuckled his seatbelt and moved closer to Jed. Cupping his cheeks gently, Ben leaned forward and kissed Jed. JED SALTZMAN

Jed felt the exact same way. He was pretty happy about the fact that it had been him who stumbled upon Ben. Sometimes, he often found himself wondering what could’ve happened to Ben if he hadn’t been the one to find him, he wondered where Ben would be right now if things had happened differently. But then again, dwelling on what ifs and what could have happened was never a good thing to do. He was just glad that everything had worked out in their favor. “Me too, Ben.” Jed said with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
“Honestly, I’m pretty glad that you don’t know the old Jed. That guy was a dick.” Jed pointed out a moment later with a chuckle following. “But I’m glad you like Jed 2.0.” Jed added a moment later. That guy was going to be a permanent fixture if Jed had any say in the matter. When Ben asked if he had anyone in mind, his expression turned thoughtful for a moment as he released a soft hum. “Honestly, not yet. But that’s because I wanna think ‘bout this thoroughly first. Being an Alpha is a pretty time-consuming job at times, so I wanna make sure who I pick is up for the challenge.” Jed offered with a quick nod of his head following. He didn’t have anyone in particular in mind just yet but maybe that will change in the future.
Jed felt a small smile tug at the corner of his lips when Ben pointed out that it will be fun to share the college experience with him. Jed honestly couldn’t agree more. “It will be, for sure.” Jed agreed with a hint of softness in the tone of his voice. He released a soft hum when Ben asked why he didn’t want to go to a human college. He listened to Ben, his lips stretching into a small smile at his words. Jed had no issue with communicating with ordinary people, really. He knew he would hypothetically be okay if he were to go to a human college instead, but… “I guess I just don’t wanna hide who I am.” Jed revealed at first, allowing a few beats to pass before he spoke up again. “For the longest time, I hated who I was. I associated being a werewolf, an Alpha with being a violent creature, mainly because of my … old father. He wasn’t ashamed to use his status to force others into submission, he practically did the same with me. I hated who I was for the longest time, felt like I didn’t belong in my own skin but then I was taken to the Salvatore school and it was definitely an eye opener for me.” Jed tapped his fingers on the steering wheel as his eyes moved from the road to look at Ben for a moment before shifting his attention back to the road.
“Being at the school taught me to accept the werewolf side of me, to embrace it. It taught me to not hide it, y’know? That’s what I’d struggle with the most if I were to go to a human college. Hiding my werewolf side.” Jed revealed a moment later with a quick nod of his head following. He wouldn’t be able to do it for long, really. He had been surrounded by werewolves, witches, vampires, warlocks, and many other creatures for so long and each one of them wasn’t hiding who they are. They were accepted for who they were and that acceptance was one of the many things that helped Jed accept the fact that he was an Alpha.
“In that case, we’ll go to the Salvatore College, then.” Jed said with a gentle smile tugging at the corner of his lips. It would definitely be an eye-opener. They do say that college is one step closer to being an actual adult and honestly? Jed can’t wait. He can’t wait until he’s done with studying altogether. Jed’s expression softened at Ben’s next words before he nodded his head a few times at his promise. “Okay.” He said with a gentle smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He didn’t doubt that in the slightest.
Jed eventually parked the van to the side and unclasped his seatbelt before reaching out to Ben, bringing him closer to himself as they kissed passionately. He kissed Ben for as long as he could, enjoying the feeling of his lips against his own before he eventually parted from the kiss, his forehead resting against Ben’s for a moment, his eyes still closed for a few more moments before he finally pulled away. “Much, much better.” Jed said with a grin tugging at his lips. “You ready to keep goin’?”

Ben had always seen couples enjoying their lives together and he had always envied them. Ever since Ashur died he had been on his own, there had been a few one night stands along the way when he’d given in and just wanted to feel something other than the pain that came from each death he faced but he had never let anyone get close to him. He had arrived in Mystic Falls hoping to find someone to help him break his curse and he had thought that he would move on after that but now he had the life he had always wanted and it was all thanks to Jed. He had taken a chance on him and not a day went by when Ben wasn’t grateful to him for that. Feeling a smile touch his lips as Jed said he was glad he’d been the one to find him too, Ben reached over and gave his boyfriend’s arm a gentle squeeze. Everything had changed that day and Ben knew that he was never going to regret what had happened or the connection he’d felt to Jed from the moment he’d opened his eyes. As Jed said that the old version of him was a dick, Ben couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m sure he wasn’t as bad as you’re making out,” he grinned. “I do like Jed 2.0 although I still would have been attracted to the old you,” Ben admitted. He had felt that way about Jed before he’d known anything about him, there had just been something drawing Ben to him right from the start and he knew that it was the same for Jed. As Jed spoke again, Ben nodded. “Whoever you choose will be the right person for the job, I know it,” he said gently. “If you ever want someone to talk it through with you know I’m always here for you.” Ben knew that Jed had his friends and family as well as his pack to talk to but he wanted Jed to know that they could talk about things like that as well. Jed had done so much for him and Ben knew that he wanted to make his boyfriend’s life easier in any way he could. He and Jed both wanted to go to college but what Ben wasn’t sure about at first was what college Jed would want to go to. The Salvatore School was built by Jed’s parents so that supernatural children would have a safe place to learn about who and what they were without having to fear being exposed to humans and it truly was a safe space to everyone there, even people like Ben who hadn’t been there for very long. The college would be the same but he had seen the way Jed was with his human friends and he knew that he wouldn’t blame Jed if he wanted to go to a regular college instead. As he said that he didn’t want to hide who he was, though, Ben found himself nodding in understanding. “You’ll always have to hide from some people but I can understand wanting to be around people who accept you,” he said gently. As Jed said he hated who he was for a long time, Ben’s expression softened. “I hope you never feel like that again because who you are is incredible,” he assured him, not a doubt in his mind about that. Ben didn’t know the person Jed used to be but this version of him was someone that he was proud to know. “You should be proud of who you are, don’t hide it,” he nodded, knowing that being able to be honest about who he was had to be one of his favourite things about being at the Salvatore School as well after hiding it for so long. “That sounds perfect,” he agreed as Jed said they would go to the Salvatore College then. There was a part of him that had wondered whether Jed might want a bit of space rather than going to the same college but he didn’t seem to want that at all and Ben really was glad about that. Ben’s next words were playful but his smile widened as Jed pulled over. They had already been on the road for a while and Ben knew that he was important to take breaks every now and then but as Jed reached out for him to draw him closer Ben couldn’t deny that this was so much better than he had thought that it would be. It wasn’t long before their lips met and Ben found himself kissing Jed back passionately, pouring everything he had into the kiss as his lips moved against Jed’s. It was only when they needed to breathe that Jed pulled back and Ben’s smile returned as Jed’s forehead came to rest against his. “Much better,” he agreed, leaning forward and stealing one more kiss before nodding as Jed asked if he was ready to keep going. “Definitely. We can do more of that when we get there,” he grinned. JED SALTZMAN

Jed made a face when Ben said that he was sure that Jed 1.o wasn’t as bad as he was making him out to be. Oh, he was worse. He was a carbon copy of his own father, he was doing all the things that he hated his father for. The display of his status, making others submit to him, they often scrambled to do his homework for him, and he’d often intimidate new wolves to show them who’s boss. He wasn’t the nicest person out there for the longest time and it was honestly a miracle that he hadn’t been kicked out of the school for his behavior. “This is how I know you’re very biased,” Jed said with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after. He wasn’t sure if the old version would have accepted his feelings for Ben at all. Sure, Jed still struggled to come to terms with his own feelings but he came around to it in the end. The old version would have been an actual nightmare to deal with. “I hope so.” Jed was going to keep an eye out, for sure. His attention drifted to settle on Ben, nodding his head a few times. “I know, thanks,” Jed replied with a gentle smile on his lips. He knew he could count on Ben to listen.
Jed liked the school because he didn’t have to hide from anyone, he could be himself without hiding anything about himself. They knew he was a werewolf and so that took a huge weight off his shoulders in comparison to humans. “Thanks, Ben,” Jed said with a small smile tugging at his lips. “Which is why I would absolutely suck in a human college. So yeah, Salvatore College it is.” Jed added when Ben told him that he should be proud of who he was. It took a really, really long time but Jed was proud of who he was.
Jed found it difficult to lean back from Ben, but he knew that the distance won’t get any shorter if they remain here, so he finally pulled back. “I like the way you think.” Jed changed the signal to the left as he went back on the road and switched off the signal. He kept driving, enjoying the feeling of being behind the wheel. It was definitely fun. Though the drive itself was long. Fourteen hours long, to be exact. Inevitably, Jed did get tired halfway through as he yawned for the umpteenth time. “Okay, I feel like I’m five seconds away from falling asleep, wanna take over? Or should we find a stop to park and get some sleep together?”
