━ the heart wants what it wants━
“It’s not supposed to be easy, Raf. Aunt Rebekah once told me that the scent of blood is like laying your eyes on food after starving for days. Tempting to the point that it could drive you insane. That’s why we have students here trying to learn how to control their hunger. If it were easy, they wouldn’t be here, Raf. Just trust the process, okay? It’ll get better. I’m sure of it.” Hope had never felt that type of hunger before and so, she often talked to her family about what blood smelled like to them so she could help Rafael.
Hope’s expression softened at Rafael’s words before she sent him a gentle smile to assure him that it was okay. She will always be there to help him, no matter what. She was going to make sure that Rafael survived. She nodded her head in an understanding manner as she listened to Rafael. “It’s going to be okay. We’ll help.” She assured him softly. “I won’t let this happen again.” Hope promised with a quick nod of her head following.
Her eyes relaxed on Rafael and Landon and the exchange happening between them made her frown slightly. “But the thing is, it is his fault and you shouldn’t defend him at your own cost, Raf. He needs to know what he did wrong so this doesn’t happen again.” Hope interrupted when Rafael attempted to defend Landon. “Don’t try to take all the blame, Raf. I won’t let you. He’s at fault here.” Hope added a moment later, her glare focused solely on Landon before her expression softened and lost some of its heat when her eyes relaxed on Rafael instead. “Where are you gonna go?” Hope questioned with a concerned look on her face.

– whatever you need, I'm there –
Landon’s expression turned sympathetic at Rafael’s words. “I know, man. I’m really sorry about that.” Landon’s guilty expression never vanished as he avoided Rafael’s eyes for a moment. When Rafael tried to assure him, he released a soft sigh. “How can I not? What I did was beyond fucked up.” Landon gnawed on his bottom lip momentarily as he shook his head, still surprised by his own actions. How could he do something like that to Rafael? How did he not think of the circumstances first before doing anything? He really shouldn’t help in an area he knew nothing about, but he only had the best intentions in mind, he just had terrible execution. “Why are you apologizing, man? You never would have had to do anything if I hadn’t pushed you over the edge.” Landon frowned slightly when he heard Rafael apologize for hurting him. He only ever had to hurt him because Landon had pushed him over the edge.
Landon’s eyes moved back to Hope, her glare making him want to shrink on himself. Hearing Rafael say those words out loud made him want to shrink on himself even more as he shook his head. “She’s right, Raf. You keep apologizing to me, you keep taking all of the blame, but I’m the root of the problem here. None of this would’ve happened if I had thought this through and I’m sorry, for making you lose control like that.” Landon shook his head, his guilty expression still visible on his face.
“Dude, of course, I don’t want space from you. You don’t scare me, Raf. You’re my brother, man.” Landon replied almost immediately. “Where are you gonna stay? You don’t have to go, Raf.”

“I know it’s not meant to be easy but I’ve been a hybrid for a little while now so I should be better at it than this,” Raf said, unable to deny that he was frustrated with himself. He really had been trying to stay in control but there had been some close calls along the way and losing control with Landon felt like it was the final straw. Raf knew that there were plenty of students at the school who felt like he didn’t belong there with them any longer and as much as he didn’t want to admit it, there was a part of him that was wondering if perhaps they were right. The school was meant to be a safe haven for all of them and the one thing they couldn’t have was any of them turning on each other. Raf didn’t trust himself around people now after what had happened with Landon so he knew that he really couldn’t expect anyone else to trust him either. “I hope you’re right,” he admitted as Hope said that she was sure it would get better. Either way he knew he couldn’t take much more of this. “You can’t guarantee that Hope, you can’t be around me every minute,” Raf said, knowing that there was no way Hope could guarantee that something like this wouldn’t happen again. “I don’t want anyone else to get hurt so maybe you should let me try and figure this out on my own for a while,” he suggested. Raf knew that some of his friends would be safe from him but there were others who wouldn’t be so lucky and he knew that he didn’t really want to go taking any chances. “You were looking out for me just like you always do, I can’t be mad at you for that,” Raf assured Landon as he apologised. He knew that there was some logic to it when both Hope and Landon said that this wasn’t his fault but it still didn’t help lessen the guilt he felt over the fact that he had killed his best friend. “I know it was messed up but regardless of who did what I still killed you. I can never take that back no matter how much I want to.” He was going to have to live with that guilt for the rest of his life and the truth was that right now he really wasn’t sure how he was meant to do that. He knew that Hope had killed someone when she had triggered her curse but that had been in self-defence. Things were different for Raf, Cassie had died when he’d lost control of the car and now Landon. It felt like the people he cared about most kept dying because of him and he knew that he couldn’t let it continue. “I always seem to hurt the people I care about most,” he breathed before shaking his head as Landon asked why he was apologising and said he never would have done it if he hadn’t been pushed over the edge. “That’s not true, I’ve come close to feeding on people before over the smallest of cuts. It doesn’t take much for me to lose it right now.” It was a horrible feeling, that was for sure. Hope seemed happy to lay all of the blame at Landon’s feet but Raf knew that wasn’t fair, not when Landon had only been trying to help him get his bloodlust under control. He might have gone about it the wrong way but his intentions were good and Raf knew that he was never going to forget that. “You didn’t do it on purpose, you trusted me to stay in control and I let you down,” Raf said, shaking his head as he looked over at his brother. “It was an accident.” That much was definitely true but it still didn’t change the fact that he had killed Landon. As Landon said he didn’t scare him and that he was his brother, Raf felt a half smile touch his lips. “We’ll always be brothers, that’s never going to change,” Raf assured him, knowing that there wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that. As Landon said he didn’t have to go, Raf’s expression softened. “I don’t trust myself right now and the last thing I want to do is hurt you again,” he said gently. He wasn’t sure if he would ever be able to forgive himself for hurting Landon the first time and he knew that he couldn’t risk it happening again. “I’ll ask Dr S if there are any spare rooms I can use and if not I think Ben has a single so I’ll see if I can crash on his floor tonight or something. Nephilim blood doesn’t seem to have the same effect that other blood does,” he shrugged. HOPE MIKAELSON & RAFAEL WAITHE
