━ the heart wants what it wants━
Something was wrong. Hope could feel it in her guts as she looked around her for any reason as to why she would be feeling like this, but she couldn't see anything. Nothing looked amiss. Hope bit down on her bottom lip as she began making her way to Rafael and Landon's room where she knocked gently on the door. Hope had been keeping an eye on Rafael, for the most part, to make sure that he was adapting well to becoming a hybrid and she could tell that Rafael was struggling a lot. Not only because of his new powers but because of the school's gossip circle. It pissed Hope off when she learned about what people were saying about Rafael behind his back, or even when he was nearby.
Hope frowned gently when she couldn't hear any movements on the other end of the door. It usually didn't take them that long to open the door. "Raf? Landon? It's Hope. Can you open the door, please?" No answer. It made that sinking feeling return twice as hard as before which nearly made her feel sick to her stomach. Hope opened the door and looked inside only to find the room to be completely empty. Hope released a shaky sigh as she began making her way out of the room instead as she began following Rafael's scent. She knew well it enough that she didn't need a shirt of his to track it down with.
Hope followed his scent until it became mixed with that haunting scent of blood that Hope knew all too well. "Raf?!" Hope called out as she looked around her until she finally found him but he wasn't on his own. There was something by his feet... No, it wasn't something.
It was someone. Hope stopped dead in her tracks as her eyes relaxed on the passed out form of Landon and upon realizing that Rafael was crying, Hope came to the realization that she couldn't hear the sound of Landon's heart beating which immediately rang the alarm bells for Hope as her eyes relaxed on the blood on Rafael's mouth. "Oh my god..." Hope breathed out, mostly to herself as her heart sank to the pit of her stomach. But right now, it wasn't time for shock. Rafael needed her. "Raf? Hey, hey, it's me." Hope approached him slowly, her eyes focused solely on Rafael. "Hey, look at me." Hope squatted down in front of Rafael, still not reaching out to touch him because she didn't want to scare him."Shhh, it's going to be okay." Was it, though? Was it ever going to be okay when it was clear that Rafael had taken the life of his best friend and brother? Hope glanced over at Landon's body, her heart aching at the sight of him, unmoving and not breathing. "Can you tell me what happened?"

Raf had spent such a long time searching for a safe place to call home and he knew that it was the same for Landon. Growing up in foster care they had both had more than their fair share of awful foster parents and Hector and Maria really hadn’t been any better. Raf had been able to take the heat off of Landon and make sure that all of Hector’s abuse was aimed at him instead but it had still been better staying there than it had been going to another home because at least they had been able to stay together. The Salvatore School was a fresh start for both of them and it was one that Raf had enjoyed embracing until now. Still, he knew that he just needed to give it more time and he was going to try and do just that. “We both know you wouldn’t have it any other way,” Raf chuckled as Landon joked that it was unfortunate that they were stuck together. They had been through so much together and no matter what happened they were always in each other’s corner. “I knew you were all talk,” Raf teased as Landon didn’t accept his challenge before his expression softened as Landon said he knew he appreciated everything that he was doing. Landon really had gone above and beyond to try and help him and Raf knew that he was never going to forget that. “I know you. Just don’t forget to look after yourself at the same time,” Raf warned as Landon said that looking out for him was his top priority. He knew how easy it was to focus on one thing and forget about everything else and the last thing he wanted was for Landon to end up forgetting about himself in the process. “I know you’re not but I want you to have some answers so we’ll figure it out,” he said, knowing that there really wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that. Landon had stood by him through everything so Raf knew that the least he could do was help his brother figure out what he was. Raf had been doing his best to keep his bloodlust under control but when Landon deliberately cut his wrist it was too much for him. They had been training hard all day and no matter how hard Raf tried to resist the temptation of his brother’s blood he just couldn’t do it. The moment the blood started flowing into his mouth that was it, he needed more and he just couldn’t stop. Landon’s words reached his ears but he just couldn’t bring himself to focus on them, all he could think about was the blood. Even when Landon said that he’d pushed him too far and that it wasn’t his fault he couldn’t bring himself to stop and by the time he snapped out of it, it was already too late. In his heart Raf knew that but he couldn’t accept it, he tried to bring Landon back but it didn’t work and it was all his fault. Time lost all meaning as Raf sat against the tree sobbing, he knew that he needed to do something, anything but he couldn’t move. Instead he remained there and sometime later he vaguely became aware of a voice but he couldn’t bring himself to focus on that either. It was only when Hope made her way over to him that Raf snapped out of it and he tried to push himself backwards and away from her but the tree behind him meant that he couldn’t do that, only able to move around it a little instead. His tears didn’t slow at all and he knew that his eyes would be red but he didn’t care about that, all he could think about was Landon and the fact that he was gone. “No, it’s not going to be okay,” he said as he shook his head, his voice hoarse from the amount of crying he had done. As Hope asked what had happened, Raf glanced over at Landon for a moment before quickly looking away, unable to look at his brother or meet Hope’s gaze. “Landon wanted to help me learn to control myself and my abilities so we came out here,” he began, wiping his eyes even though it was futile as more tears replaced those he had wiped away. “We were out here all day and he wanted to show me that I wasn’t a monster and that I could stay in control. He cut himself to prove it but I couldn’t resist his blood. I started drinking and I couldn’t stop and now he’s gone,” he breathed, his heart aching even more as he said those words out loud. “You should stay away from me Hope, I don’t want to hurt you too,” he said quietly even though he knew that she would be able to hear him. ━ the heart wants what it wants━
Hope’s heart ached at the sight of Rafael’s devastated state, watching the way he tried to move away from her. Anyone else would have felt worried about being in the company of a newly turned hybrid because the chances of getting bitten were high but not Hope. She didn’t seem to care that she was alone with him when he had clearly just fed on his best friend to the point where he was gone. Hope’s eyes remained on Rafael as he responded back to let her know that it was not going to be okay. Her eyes moved to settle on Landon’s body and she immediately knew why Rafael had said that. He had just killed his best friend and brother, there was no way he was going to push through that without help. “Maybe right now it doesn’t look like it, but it will be okay, Raf. I’m here with you. I’ll help.” Hope promised in a soft voice as she listened to Rafael explain what had happened.
“He cut himself?” Hope questioned with disbelief laced in the tone of her voice. If Landon truly knew what it was like for vampires, he wouldn’t have done that. She glanced over at Landon before her attention drifted back to Rafael, not wanting him to leave her sight. “No, Raf. I’m not going to leave you.” Hope shook her head stubbornly when he told her that she should stay away from him. “Listen to me, what happened wasn’t your fault, okay? I know it feels like it now, but you lost control, Raf. You didn’t do this on purpose. You were pushed too far too soon.” Hope wanted to scold Landon for being so stupid but — he was gone.
“Listen to me, just because he’s — gone right now doesn’t mean that this is it. We have skilled witches and other supernatural beings capable of bringing people back. Uncle Henrik has been teaching me how to do it, I’m sure I can bring him back, Raf.” Hope’s eyes searched for Rafael’s, her voice remaining soft. “Come with me. I’ll bring him back to the school and we can figure this out, okay? Please.”

It had taken Raf a while to get used to everything after his triggered his curse but it had been that much easier knowing that he had Landon there by his side. He had managed to get a handle on that but becoming a hybrid was something else entirely. Now all of his emotions were heightened and the bloodlust was so much worse than he had ever thought that it could be. MG always made it look easy and so did the other vampires at the school but the truth was that it wasn’t at all. Raf wasn’t sure whether it was just him that struggled like this but it definitely felt like it and he knew that he didn’t want to hurt Hope as well. He tried to move away from her but he couldn’t go very far and he shook his head as Hope said that it would be okay. “I killed him, Hope. I killed my brother,” he breathed, unable to deny that he was terrified of what he might do to other people if he was able to do that to the person who was closest to him in the world. As Hope repeated what he’d said, Raf nodded. “He must have brought a knife with him from the kitchen. He had his back to me, I had no idea what he was doing until it was too late,” Raf explained, needing her to know. It didn’t excuse what he had done, nothing could ever do that, but Hope had been there for him ever since he’d arrived at the school and he had tried to do the same for her so he needed her to know the truth. Raf shook his head as Hope said that it wasn’t his fault. “If I’m capable of doing this to Landon then I don’t even want to think about what I could do to anyone else,” he breathed. “I just couldn’t stop.” That was one of the things that scared him most even though it was only his first taste of fresh blood since he’d completed his transition. Raf couldn’t deny that he was surprised when Hope said that just because Landon was gone now that didn’t mean that it had to stay that way. She was a powerful witch, he knew that, but he hadn’t known that she was capable of bringing someone back to life. “You can really bring him back?” he asked as he wiped his eyes, his eyes meeting hers only to find that there was no indication that she was saying it just to make him feel better. “Okay,” he nodded, taking a deep breath to steady himself before pushing himself to his feet. “You lost control, Raf. You didn’t do it on purpose. You wouldn’t hurt him on purpose.” Hope knew it made no difference to reassure Rafael because it still doesn’t change the fact that Landon was dead and she knew there was no way Rafael was ever going to forgive himself for that. Hope’s eyes widened when Rafael told her that Landon must have brought a knife with him and purposefully sliced himself which led to Rafael losing control like that. “What the hell?” If Landon were alive, Hope would have scolded him for pulling that stunt but he wasn’t, so she put off the scolding for now. If Landon knew what blood did to vampires and hybrids, he would have never pulled a stunt like this one, but of course he didn’t know. He wasn’t a hybrid or a vampire. “He probably thought he was helping you, but he didn’t know he was only making matters worse for you.” Hope wanted to justify Landon’s stupid choices but she was still pissed off at him.
“When you hurt Landon, I wasn’t around, okay? Now I’m here. I won’t let you hurt anyone else. You lost control because of the overwhelming smell of Landon’s blood, there are very few chances of anyone at the school getting hurt or being as stupid—” Hope stopped when she realized that she was insulting a dead guy right now. She closed her eyes and released a soft sigh before she opened her eyes again, her attention resting on Rafael. “My point is that, I’m going to be there for you. I won’t let you hurt anyone else. We both know that I can take you, right?” Hope’s eyes searched for Rafael’s as her lips stretched to form a small smile to show she was only teasing him about the last part. “Of course you couldn’t stop, Raf. You’re a newly turned hybrid. Blood is like an oasis and you’re a deeply parched traveller. It’s normal as awful as that sounds to lose control like that.”
Hope’s lips stretched to form a gentle smile when Rafael asked her if she could really bring him back. “I can try.” She promised him with a gentle smile resting on her lips. “Thank you.” Hope told him in a soft voice when Rafael agreed to come back with her to the school. Hope made her way over to Landon, gently turning him on his back before she reached for his wrist to tug him up as she wrapped his arm around her neck to keep him supported. He was heavy, especially with all his weight being supported by her, but Hope was a werewolf which helped her carry him without toppling over.
Hope checked on Rafael over her shoulder multiple times where she walked ahead. “We’re almost there.” She assured him in a soft voice as she began making her way to the school with Rafael and Landon. When Hope entered the school, she gently laid Landon’s body down and proceeded to create a circle around him with white chalk. She placed down candles and lit them up using her magic before she kneeled down next to Landon, her hands hovering above him as she started chanting in latin under her breath, her eyes closed so she could pour all her focus into her magic without the risk of getting distracted or getting the spell wrong.

“I would never hurt him on purpose,” Raf breathed. Not only had he killed his best friend but he had showed that he could be the monster that he feared he had become. He had heard the way that a lot of the other students talked about him, he was the only hybrid at the school and all of the vampires had more experience with controlling their bloodlust than he did. Even so he had heard the other students talking about how he didn’t belong there, something that even his werewolf hearing would have picked up and was even easier to pick up now that he was a hybrid, and he had so desperately wanted them to be wrong but he knew now that they weren’t. He needed to learn how to control himself but he wasn’t so sure that trying to do that around so many other people or around people he cared about was such a good idea any more. “He trusted me not to hurt him. He wanted to show he had faith in me,” Raf said, his voice breaking as it began to sink in just how badly he had screwed up. There was a voice in the back of his mind that was telling him that it was too soon for what Landon had tried to do but in that moment his grief was overwhelming and so was his guilt. “He really was trying to help. A lot of the other students have been saying I don’t belong here any longer, he wanted to show that they were wrong but it ended up being the opposite,” he sighed. Raf hated feeling like this, he was so used to being in control but right now his bloodlust was overwhelming and so were his emotions. No matter how hard he tried to get his head out of that dark place he just couldn’t do it at the moment and it was taking a toll to say the least. Raf couldn’t ignore the way that Hope’s voice trailed off as she said that the chances of anyone else getting hurt or being that stupid were slim. He knew that she didn’t want to speak ill of Landon and Raf didn’t want that either, not when Landon had only been trying to help him. “Alright, you’ve got a point there,” he conceded as Hope said that she could take him. He knew that she was only joking but she really was a force to be reckoned with at the best of times so he knew that he really didn’t have to worry while she was around. “I managed to stop when I drank your blood but this was different. One taste and I was gone even though I had a blood bag this morning.” It wasn’t like anything that he had ever felt before and he knew that he never wanted to feel that again. “Thank you,” Raf said sincerely as Hope said that she could try to bring Landon back. Whether or not it would work he had no idea but he could hope that it would at least. Raf wanted to help Hope take Landon back to the school but the truth was that he could still smell blood and he just didn’t trust himself. Instead he ended up hanging back a little and he nodded as Hope said that they were almost there. Thankfully they didn’t meet anyone on their way through the school and all Raf could do was watch as Hope got everything set up. “Do you really think this could work?” he asked, his voice full of hope as he spoke. ━ the heart wants what it wants━
I would never hurt him on purpose, He trusted me not to hurt him. He wanted to show he had faith in me,
Hope nodded her head and honestly she didn't need any convincing because she knew the answer to that all too well. "I know. I'm glad you know that, too." Her eyes remained fixed on Rafael, watching him carefully for a few moments before her lips parted to release a soft sigh. "Well, he's an idiot for pushing you too far too soon." Hope paused for a moment when she realized that she was basically insulting a dead guy. "If I were around, I would have given him an earful. He's seriously not allowed to train you ever again." If that could even be described as training. It was a suicide plan, not anything else.
He really was trying to help. A lot of the other students have been saying I don’t belong here any longer, he wanted to show that they were wrong but it ended up being the opposite,
There was still a frown on Hope's features but it was beginning to lose most of its heat. It was obvious that she was beginning to see that Landon's intentions were pure, he just had very, very poor execution. "Listen, if they have a problem with you, they are going to have to go through me first. There's no way in hell I'm going to let them walk over you. I'm already dealing with them with Gabriela. We'll take care of them." Hope said with a stern tone of voice, her frown deepening for a moment before she shook her head. Bunch of bullies... But hey, if they wanted to be the villains in Rafael's story, Hope will gladly become the villain in theirs.
Alright, you’ve got a point there, I managed to stop when I drank your blood but this was different. One taste and I was gone even though I had a blood bag this morning.
Hope's lips stretched to form a small smile when Rafael told her that she had a point when she pointed out that she could take him. She wasn't exaggerating either. "I know it was." Hope breathed out a soft sigh as she ran her fingers through her hair.
Thank you, Do you really think this could work?
Hope offered him a gentle smile when he thanked her before she paid attention to what she was doing, setting up everything. "Well, there's only one way to figure that out." Hope said with a quick nod of her head. She began murmuring the spell under her breath until she started hearing this noise... It could almost be described as a sizzling noise. Hope stopped the spell almost immediately, thinking that she had messed it up somehow and that she was only making matters worse but stopping the spell didn't matter at all. The sizzling continued and along with it came the smoke and before she knew it, Landon's body erupted in flames which immediately made Hope get up and step away. Hope tried to put the fire out with a spell, but it didn't stop. It kept burning until it all stopped and what was left behind were ashes. "Oh my god..." Hope whispered, still overcome by the shock of what she had just witnessed. "That wasn't me, Raf, I-" Hope paused when her hearing picked on a sound. It sounded like a grunt, almost. Then her eyes relaxed on the hand that seemed to emerge from the ashes, followed by Landon's head and he was... alive.

– whatever you need, I'm there –
Death always seemed like a faraway thing until it happens to you and then you quickly realize just how fleeting life can truly be. Only then do you come to the realization that you have taken so much in your life for granted and you should have known better. You should have planned things better, you should have been there for your friends a lot more. You should have done so many things but because you were barely given a warning, you didn't do any of those things.
Landon thought that his life was going to end there, that he was going to move onto peace or, well, the depth of hell, he wasn't sure how the big man made those decisions. But he was wrong. His life didn't end there at all. After what felt like an eternity, Landon's phoenix abilities came back and before he knew it, he was back to life as he stepped out of the ashes almost immediately, his eyes relaxed on Rafael as he shook off the ashes that seemed to cling onto his skin and clothes.
"I'm not dead..." Landon whispered almost immediately as his brain seemed to catch up with everything that had just happened. "I... came out of that?" Landon gestured to the ashes on the ground before his attention relaxed on Rafael. "Raf..." Landon whispered as he took a step closer but Hope stopped him by placing a hand against his chest to keep him right where he was. "Don't you think you've done enough damage tonight?" Hope's words were unforgiving as they seemed to slash into him deeply as he pressed his lips together into a thin line. "Next time you plan to do something stupid, don't ruin someone else's life with it. Keep your suicidal plans to yourself, do you understand me?" Hope's eyes were unblinking as she stared into Landon's. He quickly nodded his head a few times as he held his arms up. "I only wanted to help." His answer only seemed to make Hope even angrier as her eyes flashed bright blue but she seemed to calm down for a moment as she talked to Rafael while keeping her eyes fixed on Landon to make sure that he doesn't do anything else stupid. "Raf... Are you doing okay? He can apologize from all the way over here if you're not. You can save the hugs for later."

Ever since they met Raf had been doing his best to protect Landon, he had taken the brunt of Hector’s anger every day when they were living with them and he had taken the beatings so that Landon wouldn’t have to. He had kept the truth about what Hector was doing from his brother because he hadn’t wanted Landon to worry and he also hadn’t wanted him to do anything stupid. Even though Raf had spent all that time being beaten it had still been one of the better homes he had lived in because he had at least had a brother for the first time in his life. “I do. I’ve been trying to protect him since the day we met, I never wanted anything to happen to him,” Raf breathed. He had no idea what to do now, Landon hadn’t been hurt by anyone else he had been hurt by him and that wasn’t something that he would ever be able to take back no matter how much he wanted to. “It shouldn’t have been too soon, that’s the problem. He’s my brother, if I should be able to resist anyone’s blood it should be his.” Whether or not it worked that way he had no idea but that was definitely how it felt. Raf knew that Landon had done all of this with good intentions and from the way Hope’s expression was beginning to soften he was pretty sure that she was starting to see that too. None of this should have happened, he should have been able to stay in control but he hadn’t been able to and Landon had paid the price for that. As Hope said that she and Gabriela were already dealing with the students who didn’t want him there, a sigh escaped his lips. “You shouldn’t be having to fight my battles for me and neither should Gabriela. I hate that you’re having to do that,” he admitted. He had never wanted that, he knew that their intentions were good just like Landon’s had been but Raf was used to being the one that others leaned on when they needed someone rather than it being the other way around and it didn’t sit right with him that they were going against the other students for him. Drinking Hope’s blood when he completed the transition was so different to drinking Landon’s blood. He didn’t understand why it was but for some reason he hadn’t been able to stop and he knew that he couldn’t lose control like that ever again. He had been doing so well sticking to blood bags until now but he had come close to losing control a couple of times and he had fallen over that ledge today and that was something that he couldn’t take back no matter how much he might want to. He had no idea whether Hope would be able to bring Landon back or not as they still had no idea what made it so that he couldn’t be compelled by vampires. He hadn’t shown any other signs of being supernatural but there was something different about him and he knew that he wanted this to work so badly. It wasn’t long after Hope started the spell that there was a sizzling noise and that continued even after Hope stopped the spell. What was going on he had no idea but they soon found out as Landon’s body burst into flames and Raf put himself between Hope and the flames, needing to keep her safe from whatever was going on so he could make sure that he was able to protect at least one person today. “I know it wasn’t,” he breathed as Hope said that it wasn’t her. All that was left was a pile of ashes but soon Landon emerged and that shocked Raf more than anything else. “Landon?” he breathed, unable to believe his eyes. Landon took a step closer to him but Hope stopped him and Raf took a half step backwards. “We both know you did,” he said as Landon said that he only wanted to help. Landon had done it for the right reasons and Raf had killed him for it, that was something that he couldn’t ignore. As Hope asked if he was doing okay, Raf shook his head. “I have no idea what is going on right now,” he admitted before giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze as she said Landon could apologise from there and they could save the hugs for later. Knowing that he couldn’t afford to overthink it Raf stepped forward and pulled Landon into a hug, knowing that was the only way he could make sure that this was actually real. “I’m so sorry Lan, I never wanted to hurt you,” he breathed as he hugged his brother tightly, a few tears rolling down his face as he did so. “Are you really okay?” he asked as he took a step backwards, knowing that he didn’t trust himself to be that close to Landon for too long. ━ the heart wants what it wants━
Hope nodded her head slowly as she listened to Rafael before she quirked an eyebrow at his next words. “Raf, blood is blood, it doesn’t work that way. You can’t pick which blood to crave and which blood to not. It’s still going to be tempting.” Hope explained to him in a soft voice. Hope’s shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug, her eyes focused on Rafael. “You’re a part of my pack, Raf. If I don’t take care of you then who will? Actually, you are my pack. It’s only you in it. So of course I wanna take care of you. It’s not a chore for me, either. I just hate the fact that some girls are so… bitchy.” Hope’s nose wrinkled in distaste. It always seemed to piss her off whenever they talked about Rafael like that. “Plus, I doubt that Gabriela is ever going to listen to you or me if we try to stop her.” Hope said with a half-smile tugging at the corner of her lips. She could tell that Gabriela liked Rafael, but she didn’t point that out to Rafael because it wasn’t her secret to expose.
Hope was taken aback by the sight of Landon erupting in flames and soon, she found herself protected from the roaring flames by Rafael. She placed her hand on the back of Rafael’s arm as she took a quick look once the flames were slowing down. What remained behind were only ashes up until the moment she saw an arm and then Landon began to emerge from the ashes. Hope didn’t want to stand between Rafael and Landon, but Landon has done enough damage today and she wasn’t going to make him ruin things even more by taking things too far, too fast. Again. Hope narrowed her eyes at Landon, her arms crossed in front of her chest, looking unimpressed for the most part and angry for the remaining bits. “Still doesn’t make what you did remotely okay. It was stupid, reckless, and suicidal. Do I have to keep going?” Hope spoke up, watching the way Landon seemed to look even more guilty now. Did she feel remorse? A little bit. Did Landon still need to hear it? Absolutely.
So she didn’t take any of it back.
“I may have an idea.” They have spent so long trying to figure out what Landon was and now it makes sense. Hope has read about phoenixes before and it seemed to match all too well. Hope stepped to the side when she received a squeeze on the shoulder, her eyes remaining on both of them as they hugged, ready to step in at any given moment. She let them talk, her arms still crossed in front of her chest and not looking all that amused because of Landon.

Landon was confused, but he was also quite relieved about the fact that he wasn’t dead anymore. He could tell that Hope hated him for pushing Rafael too far and truth be told, he hated himself for it too. He realized now that his actions had been reckless and Hope had no issue calling him out on it as his expression shifted into one of guilt.
“I know. Look, I know, and I’m really sorry. It will never, ever happen again.” Landon promised, his eyes shifting back to look at Rafael as he made that promise. “What I did was reckless and stupid and… It shouldn’t have happened, to begin with.” Landon didn’t try to approach Rafael again, his eyes focused solely on his brother. When Rafael closed the distance and hugged him, Landon immediately wrapped his arms around his brother, hugging him tightly. “I know. I know you didn’t. It was me, I—” Landon took a moment to just hug Rafael before he stepped back, his eyes meeting his brother’s. “I was such an idiot.” Landon said, barely meeting Rafael’s eyes. “I’m okay, Raf. Really.” Landon assured him with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips but the smile eased away not long after. “But you aren’t.” He added a moment later. “I’m really sorry, Rafael.”
“I didn’t think it through. I thought that maybe I could help you but I don’t know what it’s like to be a vampire and I underestimated how strong your desire for blood will be. I wasn’t thinking at all.” Landon’s eyes searched Rafael’s, his guilt visible in his eyes. “I understand if you want me to keep my distance and if you’re angry at me, you would have every right to be.”

“We share a dorm room so I’ve been trying so hard to resist and make sure I’m never hungry when I’m around him but today I couldn’t help it,” Raf admitted. Normally he made sure he fed before he headed back to the dorm to make sure that Landon’s blood wouldn’t tempt him but that day the training session had ended up taking too much out of him and he had lost control. Raf knew that he was never going to forgive himself for this and he was more determined than ever to make sure that he didn’t end up hurting anyone else. “It’s the same anywhere,” Raf nodded as Hope said she hated that girls are so bitchy, knowing that he had moved around enough and gone to enough different schools to know that for sure. “I guess I’m just not used to having anyone take care of me,” he added, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. Growing up in the foster care system he’d had to grow up quickly and learn how to look after himself. Even with Landon he was used to trying to protect him from anything bad, he had never really had anyone do that for him so it was something that was going to take some getting used to. He knew that Hope had a point when she said that he was her pack though, she might not have made him a werewolf but it was her blood that had made him a hybrid and he knew that he was always going to be loyal to her, she was one of his best friends. As she spoke again, Raf couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, you’ve got a point there. She can be pretty stubborn when she wants to be,” he chuckled. Gabriela had a strong sense of what was right and wrong and if he was honest that was something that he had always admired about her. All Raf could do was watch the exchange between Hope and Landon. Normally he would always jump to Landon’s defence but he knew that Hope was only trying to look out for him and the truth was that there was a part of him that agreed with her and it seemed that Landon did too. As Hope said she might have an idea about what had happened, Raf studied her carefully for a moment before it suddenly dawned on him. “Are you thinking he’s a phoenix?” he asked, remembering what Gabriela ha told him about her dad and brother who were both phoenixes. He knew he should have realised it straight away but it was too much of a shock seeing what had happened. Raf knew that he should keep his distance so he didn’t end up hurting his brother again but he just couldn’t do it and instead he moved in for a quick hug. Only then did it start to sink in that Landon was really alive but even though he was relieved it didn’t make his heart ache any less. He had still killed his brother and he could never take that back no matter how much he might want to. “I get why you did it. You were trying to show that you trusted me and I let you down,” Raf said, unable to meet his brother’s gaze. As Landon said that he wasn’t alright, Raf waved it off. He had already fallen apart earlier and right now he was doing his best to hold it together so he knew that he couldn’t think about that now, he just needed to focus on Landon. “I know you weren’t, it’s okay,” he shrugged, not wanting Landon to feel bad about it. As Landon spoke again, Raf shook his head. “I’m not angry at you Lan, I never could be. I can’t forget what I did though, I need some time.”HOPE MIKAELSON & LANDON KIRBY

━ the heart wants what it wants━
Hope nodded her head slowly in an understanding manner. “Well, he never actually bled in front of you before today. Everyone has their breaking point, Rafael. Today, Landon pushed you way beyond that.” Hope could hear the voice of her friends in her head telling her to not talk bad about the dead, but she couldn’t help it. What Landon did was beyond messed up and stupid. She was going to make sure he hears that loud and clear when he does wake up. Hope nodded her head slowly with a soft sigh falling from her lips when Rafael mentioned that it was the same anywhere. “That’s okay.” Hope assured him with a soft smile tugging at her lips. “I’m always gonna be here to take care of you.” She promised with a quick nod of her head and if anyone knew Hope well, they’d know that she’s not the type to break promises easily. Hope let out a chuckle at Rafael’s words when he agreed with her. She nodded her head in agreement with him. “Exactly.”
He fact that Landon had actually woken up without the help of her magic made her think that he was a phoenix. The way he rose from the ashes as well proved a point to Hope. “Yeah, that’s my best guess.” Hope said with a nod of her head following as she eyed Landon, her arms crossed in front of her chest.
Hope stood to the side, keeping an eye on both of them, happy to see them together again but she was still wary of Landon. She was just hoping that he wasn’t dumb enough to make the same mistake twice.

Landon eyed them both, his head tilted slightly to the side. “Phoenix?” He repeated, brows furrowing in confusion. But it made a lot of sense. “I’m a phoenix…” He repeated, feeling a huge weight lift off his shoulders because now he knew what he was. “I finally know what I am.” It sucked that it had happened this way, though. He never intended to take things so far. He wasn’t thinking properly… God, he if he had the chance to go back and change that, he definitely would. “No, man, look…” Landon chewed on his bottom lip. “It’s not your fault. What I did was dumb and reckless and it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. I pushed you too far.” Landon said with a small frown tugging at his features. Hope raised her hand from where she was standing. “I agree with everything that Landon just said. Especially the part where he mentioned what he did was dumb and reckless. Just gonna put a few more lines under that.” Landon could tell that Hope was disappointed with him and he didn’t blame her in the slightest. Landon’s shoulders sagged in defeat. “Thanks, Hope. Much appreciated.” He offered back to her with a soft sigh falling from his lips before his attention drifted back to Rafael.
“Oh— Time? Like, like you wanna change dorms? I can, um, figure out another room to stay in?” Landon offered, his confusion evident on his expression by what Rafael meant when he said he needed time.

“I know. I’ve been trying so hard to keep it under control but I just couldn’t do it,” Raf admitted. He knew that Hope was right, Landon had pushed him too far and his control had snapped. It was something that he was pretty sure happened to just about every vampire at some point and that should make him feel at least a little better but it didn’t change the fact that he had killed his brother, nothing could. He had sworn that he would always look out for Landon and keep him safe from harm. He had managed it with Hector and Maria as Raf had made sure that the physical abuse was aimed in his direction rather than at his brother but it had never occurred to him that one day the person Lan might need saving from was him. For such a long time it had been the two of them against the world and things had changed a little after they’d arrived at the Salvatore School as their little bubble had grown to include Hope and the rest of the squad but Landon was still his family and now he was gone so it was difficult to get his head around that to say the least. It would have been easy for Raf to leave the school far behind him after he realised just how much he was struggling and the other students started to give him a hard time but he had decided to tough it out instead because he’d at least still had his friends and Landon in his corner. Now Hope was making it clear that he still had her but Raf knew that it wasn’t safe for others to be around him and he wasn’t sure that he could continue putting them in danger so he knew that he had a lot of thinking to do. “You have no idea how much I appreciate that,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Hope and tried to push away the thoughts about leaving that he’d been having only moments before. Hope wasn’t an official Alpha like Jed was but she was still his Alpha and he knew that wasn’t going to change. As Hope agreed with him, Raf’s expression softened. “I’ve always been able to stand up for myself but this is different. I don’t trust myself to stay in control right now and if I lose control with any of them then I’ll just be proving them right.” It was difficult to say the least, he really did hate that Hope and Gabriela were fighting his battles for him but right now he was at a loss for what to do to change that. Nodding as Hope said that Landon being a phoenix was her best guess, Raf couldn’t deny that it made sense and he couldn’t deny that he was glad they finally had an answer for Landon but it didn’t make him feel any less guilty. “You do. I’m so happy for you, I just wish we’d found out another way,” Raf admitted. He knew that this couldn’t be easy for Landon either, after all he was the one who’d died and come back, but he seemed to be taking that in his stride right now and if Raf was honest he didn’t know if that made it better or worse. As Landon said what he did was dumb and reckless, Raf shook his head. “Don’t you dare beat yourself up about this, do you hear me?” he asked, his eyes fixed on Landon before he shot Hope a look. “You were looking out for me and you were only trying to help. You didn’t know that was going to happen and I’m so sorry Lan, I never wanted to hurt you.” He had been doing his best to make sure that didn’t happen and he had failed. As Hope spoke again, Raf shook his head. “This isn’t his fault Hope. If anything Lan should be the one who is angry at me – I killed him.” Just saying those words out loud was enough to make Raf feel sick to his stomach and he wished with everything he had that he could take back what had happened that day but he couldn’t. “You don’t have to do that Lan, I’ll find somewhere else to stay tonight,” Raf assured him, knowing that he didn’t trust himself enough to stay in the dorm room he and Landon shared that night. “I won’t blame you if you want some space from me as well,” he added, knowing that he wouldn’t be surprised if his brother did but just couldn’t bring himself to say it.
