Landon hated the fact that Rafael was struggling. He, so desperately, wanted to grab hold of all those troubles and toss them away from his brother because Rafael deserved to live a life without any struggles. He wanted him to be able to enjoy life to its fullest without constantly having to worry about losing control. Landon was by no means an expert when it comes to the whole hybrid shenanigans but he wanted to at least try because that's what matters the most, right? Trying.
Landon wasn't like the students at the school, he wasn't suffering from powerful surges of magic that are uncontrollable at times, he didn't have an issue with absorbing electricity whenever he was stressed, and he was pretty sure he had no fangs. He was, well, something, but so far, Landon wasn't able to determine what he was exactly. It was a little unnerving at times because it made him feel like a ticking bomb with no visible timer. He didn't know when he was going to go off. Didn't know if he was going to take anyone with him when he does. But, Landon wasn't going to uncover any of that today. He wasn't going to look into any supernatural creature other than hybrids because he wanted to help Rafael grasp onto his control. He wanted his brother to enjoy his days without worrying about who he was going to accidentally hurt if he were to lose control.
Landon ran his hand down his face with a soft sigh falling from his lips as he continued his research on vampires and werewolves. He glanced over when he saw a student head into the library and then another student which made Landon frown slightly as his attention moved to rest on his watch, his eyes widening slightly when he noticed that it was nearing eight in the morning. "Oh, wow." Landon whispered under his breath before he shut off the tab and then the computer before he pushed himself up from his seat, massaging where his shoulder met his neck to release some of the tension collected there. Landon had had over three cups of coffee so far, so he was far from sleepy, which worked great for his upcoming plan, actually, because his upcoming plan did not involve going to sleep.
Landon headed upstairs to the dorm room that he shared with Rafael and opened the door quietly before he began making his way over to his best friend. "Hey, Raf." Landon called out as he reached out to give Raf's shoulder a nudge. "Raf? C'mon, dude, you gotta wake up." He nudged his shoulder gently once again. "Let's get some training done today. It'll be fun. C'mon. Up, up. Gotta seize the day, young padawan!"

Raf had been doing his best to put on a brave face ever since he completed his transition and became a hybrid but he knew that those closest to him knew that he was struggling. They had all been doing their best to try and help him but right now it wasn’t getting any easier like Raf had hoped that it would. He was doing his best to keep both his anger and his bloodlust under control but everything was heightened now and it wasn’t always easy. He had launched himself at a girl who had cut herself in the middle of class and Gabriela had talked him around but his hearing was better now than it had ever been before and he could hear the way the other students were talking about him. They didn’t want him at the school any longer because they didn’t feel safe about him and the truth was that Raf couldn’t blame them. He had no idea what he was doing and he knew that the last thing he wanted was to end up hurting someone because he lost control. He had already gone through that once the day that Cassie died and he knew that he didn’t want anyone else to lose their life because of him. He knew deep down that this wasn’t his fault and he knew that it certainly wasn’t Hope’s, she had given him some of her blood to help him heal so this was completely down to the vampire that had decided to target him and the person who was responsible for putting his name on the hit list in the first place. He was leaning on his friends as much as he could but he had never been good at burdening people with his problems, that was why he had never told Landon about Hector’s abuse. He was used to being the one that others leaned on when they needed help, not the other way around, and the truth was that he didn’t really know how to let people help him that much. That morning his alarm had gone off but Raf simply turned it off and rolled over, pulling the quilt up over his head. To begin with the Salvatore School had felt like a safe haven to him, it was the first place that he had ever truly felt safe and called home, and Dr S had assured him that this was still his home but he knew that the other students no longer felt the same and that was tough. Raf was used to moving and starting over but he had wanted so badly for this time to be different. Raf had already seen that Lan wasn’t in his bed but he wasn’t sure whether his brother had just ended up heading out early for some reason. Either way he knew that Lan was better away from him right now but soon enough he stirred when his brother nudged his shoulder and he heard Lan’s voice. “You go, bro. I’m going to stay here where I can’t hurt anyone,” he groaned, knowing that the last thing he wanted was to end up hurting anyone. LANDON KIRBY

Landon paused as he processed Rafael’s words before a frown started tugging at his features. “Hey, you won’t hurt anyone.” He sat down on the edge of Rafael’s bed, his eyes worriedly scanning over Rafael before he nudged him again. “C’mon, Raf. You’re being too hard on yourself. You lost control one time and it’s completely normal to do that, you hear me? I’ve read that control for vampires is a very tricky thing.” Landon held onto Rafael’s covers so that he wouldn’t cover himself from head to toe with it to escape him if he ever thought of doing that. Landon’s heart ached for Rafael, he hated seeing him this way because he looked so defeated and so tired and it pained him deeply that he couldn’t do much to take away that bad feeling. But he wanted to at least try. “If you think that I’m just gonna get up and leave you here to dwell on all the negative thoughts going through your head, you’re very mistaken, buddy. I’m not going anywhere and I won’t let you lay here in bed all day like this. Over my dead body.” Leaving Rafael like this was simply not an option. He was going to do whatever he could to help him because he wanted Rafael to feel normal again.
“It’ll be just the two of us, okay? Just you and me, like the good ol’ days. I’ll help you work on your control and you can help me figure out what I am. Sounds like a win-win situation, right?” Landon offered with a smile resting on his lips as he gave Rafael’s arm yet another gentle nudge. “Please, Raf. Let me help. I hate seeing you like this.”

Raf was used to not having anywhere that he belonged, it had been that way for such a long time but he had honestly thought that being at the Salvatore School would be different. For a while it was, he’d found friends who had accepted him pretty quickly for who he was and he had honestly felt like he’d found where he was meant to be but now he wasn’t so sure. He couldn’t ignore the way that the other students talked about him now and he couldn’t blame them either, he needed to get his bloodlust under control but that was proving to be so much easier said than done. His friends were still standing by him and they were doing their best to help him but Raf knew that he couldn’t expect them to hold his hand forever, he hated feeling like he was being a burden so he had been trying to get a handle on it on his own but he had lost control and right now he wasn’t sure that he trusted himself to be around anyone else. “You’re right, I won’t hurt anyone because I’m not going to go near anyone. You’d be best off staying as far away from me as you can,” Raf said as he finally opened his eyes and looked up at Landon. He knew that he was being weak, this wasn’t him at all but if pushing away anyone that he could end up hurting or killing the way he had killed Cassie was the only way to keep them safe then he knew that he would do it. Pushing himself up into a sitting position, Raf shook his head as Landon said that he’d read that control for vampires was a very tricky thing. “I lost control once but I feel tempted all the time,” Raf breathed as he looked over at his brother. “Right now I can hear your blood pumping through your veins and I want it but I don’t want to hurt you,” he said, feeling tears stinging his eyes and hating the fact that those words had even left his lips in the first place. Landon was his brother, the one person he had always been able to count on, but Raf knew that them being around each other right now was putting him in danger since Landon couldn’t fight back the way that his friends could. “I’m scared,” he breathed, blinking away the tears that had formed in his eyes. He had been scared before when he had triggered his curse but this was so much worse. Before he’d only had to worry about losing his temper or losing control during the full moon, now on top of that he had to find a way to deal with the cravings and he had no idea how to do that. As Landon spoke again, it became clear that he wasn’t going to give up and a sigh escaped Raf’s lips. “You’re really not going to take no for an answer, are you?” he asked even though he was pretty sure that he already knew what the answer was going to be. “Fine, let’s do this but only because I want to help you figure out what you are,” he said, not wanting to let Landon down even though every fibre of his being was telling him that this was a bad idea. You’re right, I won’t hurt anyone because I’m not going to go near anyone. You’d be best off staying as far away from me as you can,
"Says who, Raf? Who said that I would be best off staying away from you? I would be quite the opposite, actually. Because I don't know how to function without you next to me, Raf. I need you in my life as corny as that sounds." Landon refused to budge or get off to give Rafael the distance that he was asking for. He knew that right now, Rafael needed him more than anything and he would be a goddamn idiot if he got up and walked away from him. There was no force on Earth that was ever going to pull him away from Rafael.
I lost control once but I feel tempted all the time, Right now I can hear your blood pumping through your veins and I want it but I don’t want to hurt you,
Landon paused as he listened to Rafael before he released a soft 'oh' when he realized that just his existence around Rafael was pushing his limits a little too much. "But you haven't hurt me or anything, right? I'm still right here, no puncture wounds, no nothing. I'm still alive and you know what we should call that? A frickin' win, Raf! If you were as bad as you make yourself seem then you would've hurt me already by now. You just need help, Raf. It doesn't mean you're a monster." Landon assured him in a soft voice as his eyes remained fixed on his brother as his lips stretched to form a reassuring smile as he gave Rafael's arm a gentle squeeze.
I’m scared, You’re really not going to take no for an answer, are you? Fine, let’s do this but only because I want to help you figure out what you are,
Landon's eyes widened slightly when Rafael admitted that he was scared. It made his heart squeeze incredibly tight as he stared at his brother. "It's going to be okay, I promise. It'll get easier." Landon promised in a soft voice. He wanted to lean forward and give Rafael a hug but he didn't want to tempt him too much. He didn't want to unintentionally make matters worse for Rafael. "I'm not going to leave your side, do you hear me? You're gonna get through this, Raf." Landon gave his brother's arm a gentle squeeze before he released him not long after.
Rafael's next words made a grin form on his lips before he shook his head. "Nope!" Landon replied all too cheerfully as he pushed himself up from the bed. He wanted to cheer when Rafael finally relented but he held back and simply offered Rafael a smile because it was clear that the other reason Rafael agreed was that he wanted to help Landon figure out just what he was. "Thank you. You won't regret this. Now, take a shower and wash up. You kinda smell, dude." Landon said with a joking grin resting on his lips not long after. "I'll wait for you right here."

“I need you in my life as well but I couldn’t live with myself if I ever hurt you,” Raf admitted. That was his worst fear, hurting one of the people who was closest to him the same way he had hurt Cassie. He hadn’t meant to lose control back then and right now he felt like he was standing on a knife edge. He knew that he couldn’t lose Landon as well, the guy was the only family he had and even though they had both found themselves thrown into an awful situation with Hector and Maria, he and Lan had become the family that the other chose. That meant a lot as far as Raf was concerned as he knew that family went a lot deeper than blood. The two of them weren’t actually related but Landon was his brother and nothing was going to change that. Right now they had no idea what Landon was so for all Raf knew his brother was still mortal and he would already have to face losing him one day anyway but he was doing his best not to think about that if he could help it. As Landon spoke again, Raf sighed. “It’s a win for now but the longer we’re around each other the more we’re tempting fate. I have to feed before I come back here to lessen the cravings but that doesn’t make them go away completely, I’m not sure they ever will,” he breathed. How others did this he had no idea, they kept telling him that it would get easier with practice but right now he really didn’t feel that way. Lan and his friends had been trying to help him as much as they could but they could only do so much, at some point he was going to have to learn to stand on his own two feet and right now when he tried that he tended to fall. MG was lucky, he lived at the Boarding House with other vampires so he didn’t have the same temptation and it was the same with others but for Raf the temptation was always there. One thing Raf had learned not to do while growing up in foster care was to show any sign of weakness. If he ever did then his foster parents would always use that to their advantage and it was the same with the kids he went to school with. He had always been the confident guy who was outgoing and got along with most people but the moment anyone saw a chink in the armour he always had to wear things were never the same and they tried to exploit it. Needless to say opening up and telling Landon that he was scared really was a big deal with Raf but he knew that he needed to be honest with him and the words escaped his lips before he could stop them anyway. “It has to because I can’t live like this,” he nodded, quickly wiping away the couple of tears that spilled down over his lashes and rolled down his cheeks. “I know I’m lucky to have you Lan, I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to you.” That was why he tried not to think about the future too much these days in case he really did have to face it without Landon. Rolling his eyes as Lan told him far too cheerfully that he wasn’t going to give up, a chuckle escaped Raf’s lips as Landon told him to have a shower. “I still smell better than you,” he countered but nonetheless he grabbed his things and headed to the shower. Returning a short time later, Raf threw his dirty washing in the hamper before looking over at Lan. “Alright, Obi Wan. What’s first?”LANDON KIRBY

Landon watched Rafael with a concerned look on his face, opting to listen to him as he spoke, his expression turned into a sympathetic one. “It’s going to be okay, Raf.” Did Landon know that for sure? Not really. Was he going to try his hardest regardless to make things a little easier for Rafael? Of course. Landon nodded his head slowly as he listened to Rafael before he captured his bottom lip between his teeth momentarily. “We’ll take it one step at a time, okay? Rafael, you turned into a hybrid not so long ago, so of course, it’s normal to not have it all under control, but we’re going to help you, okay?” Landon assured him in a soft voice. He was at a disadvantage because he didn’t know what the craving felt like, but it still wasn’t enough to make Landon reconsider helping Rafael. He was going to help him. No matter what.
“I know…” Landon’s heart ached as he watched the way a few more tears slipped down Rafael’s cheeks. “I want to hug you really bad right now, but I also don’t want to make matters worse for you.” Landon said with a soft sigh falling from his lips as he watched Rafael, his frown still visible. “I’m really lucky to have you too, Raf. Look, don’t think about that, okay? I’m here now and that’s all that matters.” Rafael was an immortal now, so that meant that he was going to watch Landon age and the thought was enough to make his heart clench because he didn’t want to make Rafael sad, but life sure has its way of screwing things up, huh?
“Woah, woah. You did not just say that. I smell divine, thank you very much. Do you know how expensive that axe spray was?” Landon shot back as he pointed his index finger at Rafael but there was a grin already visible on his lips. He sat down on the edge of the bed and released a soft sigh as he listened to the shower. Landon ran his hand down his face before he leaned back on his hands and waited for Rafael to finish washing up and when he did, he stood up and turned to look at him with a pleased grin on his lips. “That’s the spirit, young padawan! Okay, first. Let’s work on your speed. Do you think you can make it to the training ground in a few seconds? Show me your speed, sonic the hedgehog.”

Raf wanted so badly to believe that Landon was right when he said that it was going to be okay. MG had found a way to get used to the bloodlust and Raf knew that he needed to be strong so that Hope wouldn’t worry when her vampire side activated and she became a full tribrid but the truth was that he was struggling right now and the worse it got the more he worried that he was going to end up doing something that he couldn’t come back from. Learning how to control his anger and his werewolf side was one thing but this was something completely different. He had never known just how strong a vampire’s cravings for blood were and now he could definitely understand just how difficult it was for them. He knew that he needed to believe what Landon was saying and he needed to let his friends help him but that was easier said than done when with some of them their blood called to him just as much as Landon’s did. “I know I need to let you guys help me but it isn’t easy,” he breathed. He didn’t like feeling like he was a burden on any of them, he was the one who was used to having people turn to him when they needed help rather than it being the other way around and with Landon Raf was used to being the one to protect him. “I’m not used to leaning on people and I’ve heard what the other students are saying about me just like you have. They don’t want me here.” Some of them were scared of him it seemed and he really couldn’t blame them for that no matter how much he hated the fact that they felt that way. One thing Raf hated more than feeling weak was crying but in that moment he just couldn’t help it although naturally he hastily wiped the tears away. He really didn’t know how he was meant to do any of this right now but he had to try and get a handle on it because the Salvatore School was his home and he knew that he really didn’t want to leave that behind. Raf completely understood when Landon said that he wanted to hug him but didn’t want to make it worse but in that moment the truth was that he needed a hug so he reached for his brother and hugged him tightly for a moment, feeling a few more tears start rolling down his face before he pulled back. Once more he wiped them away and took a shaky breath, the brave face that he always put on around everyone to hide how much he was hurting or how much he was struggling slowly starting to slip back into place once more. It was the same mask that he had used for such a long time to hide Hector’s abuse and keep the fact that he was a werewolf a secret from everyone around him apart from Landon. “You’re right, that is all that matters,” he nodded, knowing that he needed to make the most of whatever time they had together. “I hate to break it to you but body spray can only do so much,” Raf teased, in that moment able to forget about everything else and just focus on messing around with his brother. He could already see that Landon knew that he didn’t meant it, they never did when they were teasing each other. Climbing out of bed Raf jumped into the shower and he couldn’t deny that it was enough to make him feel a little better and by the time he emerged he was feeling much more like himself. “Sonic the Hedgehog?” he asked, an eyebrow raised as he looked over at his brother. “What does that make you – Tails?” he asked with a grin. “I think I probably would but you wouldn’t be able to get out there unless I carried you somehow and that might be pushing it a bit,” he added on a more serious note, not quite sure how they were going to do this. Landon’s eyes remained fixed on his brother as he spoke, his words making his heart squeeze tightly in a way that made him worry that it was going to burst. “They don’t know what it’s like for you. All they need to do is just some weird hand gestures and speak some stuff that we don’t understand and that’s it.” He mimicked their hand gestures with an annoyed look on his face. “If they knew how difficult it was, they wouldn’t have said a word. This school is built to help people, isn’t it? Then how come they want you to leave when you need help the most? It makes no sense to me.” Landon shook his head with a soft sigh falling from his lips, finding the matter to be annoying as hell.
A gentle smile tugged at his lips when Rafael agreed with him. “When am I ever not right, though?” He teased in a light-hearted voice but his smile soon eased away as he watched Rafael with the same concerned look on his face because he hated seeing Rafael suffer like this — he wanted to hug him but he didn’t want to risk making things worse for him, so he held back from doing so.
Landon released an offended gasp at that before he picked up a pillow, acting like he was gonna throw it at Rafael but he didn’t. “This is the thanks I get?” He shook his head in mock disappointment before his lips stretched to form a grin to show that he was joking around.
He stood up and turned to face Rafael when he got out of the bathroom, dressed in new clothes and ready to head out. “Yup. That’s you.” Landon said with a grin resting on his lips not long after before a chuckle left his lips as he processed his next words, nudging Rafael away with his elbow. “It’s fine, I’ll come after you. I gotta work on my stamina anyway.” Landon waved his concern off. “Plus, I wanna work on your powers for a bit. We’ll switch turns how ‘bout that? I help you with your vampire slash werewolf power and you can help me with my… whatever I am, sounds fair, right?”

“It might not make sense but they can’t help how they feel. If they don’t feel safe around me then maybe I don’t belong here anymore,” Raf shrugged. He hated feeling that way because the Salvatore School was the first place that had really felt like home to him for a long time and he knew that he didn’t want to leave but if he didn’t get his bloodlust under control then he knew that he wouldn’t be able to stay. Dr S had made it clear that the school was still his home and his friends were always going to be there for him but he knew that he couldn’t expect them to keep fighting his battles for him. Sooner or later he either needed to get himself under control or get out of there but he was doing his best to give himself time like Landon and the others kept telling him to. Soon their senior year would be over and then it would be time for college so Raf knew that he just needed to make it until the end of the year and then hopefully everything would be fine. “Most of the time,” Raf teased, a playful smile forming on his face as he looked over at Landon. With the playful teasing flowing back and forth between them it felt like things were almost back to normal but then suddenly Raf felt those cravings once more and it was like he was back to square one. It was like a vicious cycle but it was one that he knew he needed to break somehow and perhaps accepting the help that Landon was offering was the first step in doing that. “You should be used to it by now,” he chuckled, ready to catch the pillow if Landon did decide to throw it at him. Emerging from the bathroom once he had showered and dressed, Raf rolled his eyes playfully at Landon’s teasing words. He knew that Landon was only messing around the way they always did so he knew better than to take any offence to it. Raf really wasn’t sure what Landon had in mind right now but he knew that he didn’t trust himself to take Landon with him to the training ground so they were going to have to come up with something else. “So you’re finally going to take my advice and do that?” he teased. Raf wanted to protest when Landon said that he wanted to work o his powers for a bit first and then Raf could help him try and figure out what he was, he knew that it had been bothering Landon knowing that he couldn’t be compelled but not having any idea why and so far they had yet to find an answer. Raf wanted nothing more than to help his brother figure it out but deep down he knew that getting his bloodlust under control and working on his abilities was the more pressing matter right now so he nodded, pretty sure that arguing wouldn’t do him any good right now anyway. “Alright, I’ll see you out there,” he said, waiting only a moment more before using his speed to get out to the training ground and waiting for Landon once he got there. Landon released a soft ‘oh’ as he processed Rafael’s words before his lips pressed together into a thin line as he weighed down Rafael’s words before he moved a little closer to Rafael. “Look, if you want to leave the school, I’m with you. I won’t let you leave on your own.” The school had become like a home for the two of them, but if Rafael were to leave, he would leave with him. He would never let him go on his own. Rafael was his family after all.
Landon placed his hand on his hip as he looked at Rafael with the same faux-offended look. “That’s— Hey! Take that back right now or so help me god.” Landon jokingly threatened as he pointed his index finger at Rafael. Joking around like this brought back a sense of normalcy which Landon welcomed with open arms. “Wow, I can’t believe you. Is this what I get in return for my incredibly pure heart?” Landon pressed his hand against his heart, acting like he was hurt deeply while he was far from it.
“Yup. Aren’t I a great listener?” Landon asked with a cheeky grin forming on his lips. “See ya out there, my young padawan.” When Rafael used his speed to blur out of the room, Landon breathed out a soft ‘wow’ under his breath. “Literally so cool.” He mumbled under his breath before he started running out of the room which definitely got him a lot of weird looks but he ignored it and made his way to the training ground, stopping multiple times as he wheezed through each breath. When he finally arrived at their wanted destination, he was bent forward with his hands resting on his knees, breathing quickly. “Oh, man—” Landon wheezed as he finally straightened up, his legs feeling weak already. “That was not fun.” His voice was breathless as he spoke. He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand and patted his chest not long after. “Okay, let’s do this.” Landon clapped his hands once he’d regained his breath. “Alright, uh…” Landon bit down on his bottom lip and finally started the training process with Rafael because right now, helping Rafael with his bloodlust issue was the most pressing matter. They can always figure out what Landon is, later on, he was in no rush whatsoever.
Landon trained with Rafael for a while, taking breaks every now and then just to talk so that he wouldn’t exhaust Rafael or push him too far without meaning to. But then the sun started to set and he knew that they should wrap up their training soon enough. Landon had shrugged off his jacket and let it rest on the ground because he started getting sweaty halfway through the training process. Landon pushed away his sweaty curls from his forehead. “Do hybrids never get tired?” Landon asked through a wheeze. “This was pretty fun, right? I make such a great trainer. Maybe that should be my profession in the future. Trainer for the supernatural.” Landon said with a toothy grin. Landon turned around so that he could pick his jacket up from the ground. “Honestly, Raf, you’re gonna kick so much ass when you have all of this under control. You’re a total badass.” Landon added a moment later, meaning every word of it. “You’re destined for great things, as corny as that sounds.” Landon still had his back facing Rafael as he lifted a small fruit knife he’d taken from the kitchen. Landon pressed the blade against his wrist and created a cut that made him release a pained wince because that hurt. Landon didn’t think that it would get bad when he did that, he thought he’d be able to show Rafael that he had control. “Which is why I’m doing this, Raf. I just— I just need you to see that you’re not a monster. I trust you, Raf. I trust you with my whole life and I know that you can push through this.” There were small droplets of blood falling down on the ground as he dropped the knife down on the ground which fell with a muted thud as he showed his bloodied hand.

As Landon said that he would go with him if he wanted to leave, Raf shook his head. “I don’t really want to leave and I don’t think you do either. We’ve both lived in so many awful foster homes and this is the first place that has really felt like home,” he sighed. “I just don’t understand how everything has become so screwed up. Everyone who knows I’m a werewolf is here but someone put my name on that list,” he added. He had no idea who would have done that but by putting his name on the list they had ended up changing his whole life and right now it definitely wasn’t for the better. “I think I just need to take your advice and give it time,” he said at last as he nudged Landon’s arm with his own. “You’re here. So is Hope and Ela and the rest of our friends. You guys are the ones who matter to me.” For such a long time he had been on his own and every now and then he had to remind himself that he wasn’t any longer. He had people in his corner now, people who knew who he was and where he came from and they accepted him for it so he knew that he just needed to trust in them and believe what they told him. “Take it back or you’ll do what?” Raf teased, unable to deny that he was curious about what Landon might be able to come up with. “Yeah it is, you should be used to it by now,” he chuckled, knowing that Landon wasn’t really hurt by it despite the way that he was acting right now. Raf had been trapped in his own head for so long and he had been so focused on making sure that he didn’t end up losing control that he had almost forgotten how good it felt to just mess around and have the playful teasing flowing back and forth between himself and Landon like this. “You have your moments,” he grinned as Landon asked if he was a great listener before disappearing out of the room. Raf knew that he would have some time on his hands so he stopped on the way and grabbed himself a blood bag since he had a feeling that he was going to need it and he had drained half of it by the time Landon joined him out on the training grounds. “Hey, are you alright?” he asked, seeing just how tired Landon seemed after running down there. He knew that Landon wasn’t used to doing anything like that but Raf really was worried about him. Landon soon seemed to recover, though, and they trained together for a while. It wasn’t easy but Raf was doing his best and at the same time he was trying to throw things Landon’s way that might help him trigger an ability of some kind so that they could figure out what he was, knowing that it wouldn’t hurt to try and work on both at the same time. Eventually it came time for them to stop and Raf thought about it for a moment as Landon asked if hybrids ever got tired. “I have no idea. I don’t think so,” he shrugged although he knew that there was a chance that all of the training they had done might end up hitting him hard later when the adrenaline started to wear off. “You’re actually pretty good at it. If you talked to Dr S he might offer you a job,” Raf offered. Landon was right, helping people like them was the whole point of the Salvatore School and he couldn’t deny that he felt much better after that training session. They hadn’t been able to find anything that would help them figure out what Landon was but they had both ended up getting a workout in so Raf knew that it wasn’t a complete waste of time after all. “It doesn’t sound corny,” Raf assured him. “You are too, I can’t wait for us to finally figure out what you are,” he added. Right now he had absolutely no idea what Landon was but he was confident that in time they would figure it out and then it would be his turn to have a training session like this as he got used to his abilities. Landon had his back to him in that moment but the scent of blood quickly reached Raf’s nostrils and he quickly stepped back, doing his best to keep the cravings at bay. “Lan, what are you doing?!” he demanded, not even needing to reach up to feel the veins that had become visible under his eyes as Landon turned to face him and showed his bloodied hand even as Raf’s eyes snapped shut. Raf’s fangs had already protruded and no matter how hard he tried to ignore it, he just couldn’t bring himself to get away from Landon. The other boy’s blood was calling to him and no matter how desperately Raf wanted to prove that Landon was right to trust him, before he even knew what he was doing he was closing the distance between them and he grabbed hold of Landon and started drinking from the wound. – whatever you need, I'm there –
I don’t really want to leave and I don’t think you do either. We’ve both lived in so many awful foster homes and this is the first place that has really felt like home, I just don’t understand how everything has become so screwed up. Everyone who knows I’m a werewolf is here but someone put my name on that list,
Landon knew that Rafael wasn't wrong. They both had been looking for so long for a home, or at least a safe one and now that they had found this home in the Salvatore School, it wasn't easy to let go of it, but if he had to choose between the school and Rafael, he was going to pick Rafael without any hesitation because Raf had always been there for him through thick and thin and he mattered to him a lot more than the school did. Landon's eyes remained fixed on Rafael as he listened to him, nodding his head slowly. "Look, whoever put your name on that list is an awful person and I don't doubt that they'll get what's coming for them, but you survived, Raf. Not without changing a big part of you, I know, but you're here, aren't you? That's the biggest middle finger you could ever give to that person. I just don't want you to feel like you have to stay here for me because you matter to me a lot more than the school. If you go, I go. No hesitations."
I think I just need to take your advice and give it time, You’re here. So is Hope and Ela and the rest of our friends. You guys are the ones who matter to me.
Landon's lips stretched to form a soft smile when Rafael nudged him. "That's the spirit." He was happy to hear that Rafael was going to give it time. "You matter to me, too." Landon was really glad that Rafael had decided to give it some time. He was going to try his hardest to make sure that Rafael won't regret that decision later on.
Take it back or you’ll do what? Yeah it is, you should be used to it by now, You have your moments,
Landon released a gasp at that. "Oh wow, I see how it is. In this case, then I'll send you, ah... A very strong-worded DM about how much you've hurt my feelings." He offered back with a shrug of his shoulders following, acting as if that was the most threatening action to take while it really didn't matter in the slightest. Landon released a chuckle when Rafael told him that he should be used to it by now. "I can't believe you, I've been hunched over the books downstairs to the point where my back pretty much creaks with every step I take and this is the thanks I get? The world is so cruel to people like me." Landon's voice was dramatic as he shook his head, still playing along with his theatrics. "I'll pretend I didn't hear that!" He called out after Rafael when he told him that he has his moments where he was a great listener.
Hey, are you alright?
"Superb. I just skipped way too many leg days." Landon said with a wheezing sound following as he finally straightened his back and decided to push through so that they could go ahead and start with their training.
I have no idea. I don’t think so, You’re actually pretty good at it. If you talked to Dr S he might offer you a job, It doesn’t sound corny, You are too, I can’t wait for us to finally figure out what you are,
"That's pretty cool, actually. Does that mean if we sign up for a marathon, you'll be able to win? I hear they make good money out of these things." Landon released a curious hum as he seemed to think about it for a moment before he seemed to blink out of his thoughts when he heard Rafael's next words. "You think so?" Landon questioned with a grin forming on his lips not after. "I gotta admit, I don't hate the sound of that." Landon had always loved helping out. He loved helping people. It made him feel good about himself because there was so much that he lacked, but that meant that he was at least good at one thing.
"Good, because I wasn't going to take it back 'cause I mean it." Landon said with a soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He wished for Rafael to see it for himself just how much he could see that Rafael was destined for great things. "Honestly, man, me too. It's been bugging me out." It also made him stand out like a sore thumb and that definitely didn't help.
Lan, what are you doing?!
"Probably the stupidest thing ever, but I just gotta show you, man, I gotta–" Landon stopped when he saw the veins dancing underneath Rafael's eyes which seemed to spark something with him, that fight or flight response that almost made him step back. Almost. "Raf, you can fight through this. I know you can–" The words effectively died on the tip of his tongue when Rafael suddenly appeared in front of him and before he could stop it, Rafael was drinking from the wound that he'd inflicted upon himself and that was enough to make him wince but he didn't try to pull away. "Raf, listen to me. You're better than this. You are not a monster."

At the moment Raf had no idea what would be for the best so it was confusing to say the least. The Salvatore School had been home for such a long time and after the uncertainty that growing up in foster care had caused, he really wasn’t sure that he wanted to leave the first stable home he’d had since his parents had died. Raf knew that he wouldn’t have even thought about leaving if it wasn’t for the way the other students looked at him and the way they talked about him, now his hearing was better than it had ever been before and he was able to hear every word that they said about him. They didn’t think he belonged at the school any longer and there was a part of him that knew that they were right if he couldn’t learn how to control himself. He didn’t want to put anyone in danger but at the same time he wasn’t sure that he could do this on his own either. Raf had thought that being a teenager was bad enough but now he had all of this to deal with and now that he was a hybrid he had the heightened emotions of a vampire to deal with as well so it was a lot to say the least. Add to that the fact that he had no idea who had put his name on the list in the first place and the truth was that Raf really was scared. Most of the time he did his best not to show it, that was something that he had picked up during his time in foster care, but he didn’t have to worry about that with Landon and Raf was doing his best to remember that. “You got that right,” he nodded as Landon said that whoever put his name was an awful person. For a moment Raf was surprised when Landon said that he would go with him without any hesitation but that surprise quickly faded. Of course Landon would say that, they were brothers and they had stuck together this long so nothing was going to change that. “I know. I don’t feel like I have to stay just for you, I want to stay for me as well. This is our home and we have friends here,” he nodded. That was something that had taken some getting used to at first but now they had people around them that Raf trusted completely so he knew that he didn’t want to give that up. “I know,” Raf said, a smile forming on his face as Landon said that he mattered to him too. “We’re stuck with each other.” Truth be told he wouldn’t have it any other way. As Landon said that he was going to send him a strongly worded DM, Raf couldn’t help but laugh. “Bring it on,” he chuckled. He knew that Landon wasn’t really hurt or offended but it was still fun to mess around with him nonetheless. “You know I appreciate it,” he said, nudging Landon’s arm with his own. Landon really was trying to help him and Raf knew that he would always be grateful to him for that. He wasn’t used to having people look out for him but Landon had done that ever since day one and Raf always tried to do the same for him as well. Naturally he wasn’t going to take it that easy on Landon, though, and Raf rolled his eyes playfully as he sped away. Even with the detour he took it didn’t take Raf long to reach the training grounds and it had to be said that having the extra speed that came with being a hybrid was definitely pretty cool. Waiting for Landon to arrive, Raf couldn’t help but feel bad for his brother as he realised how much more difficult it had been for him to get out there. Landon soon seemed to recover, though, and for that he was glad. “Maybe but it would probably draw too much attention to what I am,” he shrugged. There were other ways he could use his abilities to make some money for them if they needed it once he had learned to master them though. “Yeah, of course. You’ve always liked looking out for people, I can’t think of anyone better suited for the job,” he said sincerely, not a doubt in his mind that Landon would be able to do it if he really wanted to. As Landon said he wouldn’t take it back because he meant it, Raf couldn’t help but laugh. “I know,” he chuckled before his expression softened as Landon spoke again. “We’ll figure it out, I promise,” he assured him gently. “We’re definitely in the best place to do that.” They were surrounded by so many people who were supernatural so he didn’t doubt that sooner or later they would put the pieces together and figure out what Landon was. Unfortunately that day Landon seemed to have an extreme way of trying to help him stay in control and Raf could already feel what little control he had left slipping as the scent of blood reached his nostrils. He had fed that morning but he and Landon really had been working hard in their training and no matter how much he tried to deny it, the smell of blood was far too good for Raf to resist. He tried to fight the craving, he really did, but he just couldn’t do it and within moments he was in front of Landon, grabbing the other boy’s arm and drinking deeply from the wound. In the back of his mind he had thought that just one mouthful would be enough but it wasn’t, in fact far from it. He had only fed from a person once before and that was from Hope when he had completed the transition. Raf had been making do with bloodbags ever since then but he was finding out now that they didn’t even come close to comparing to fresh blood and no matter how much he wanted to pull away and let Landon go or how much he wanted his brother’s words to register his bloodlust was in control right now and Raf seemed powerless to stop it. Time seemed to lose all meaning for Raf as he drank, any protests Landon might give falling on ears that just couldn’t hear him right now, and it was only as he realised that the blood had stopped flowing into his mouth that he pulled back and it was then that it hit him. “No, no, no, no, no!” he cried as he sank to the ground, his eyes filling with tears as he realised what he had done. “Landon, speak to me!” he pleaded as the tears began rolling freely down his face, pulling his brother into his arms and trying to wake him even though he knew in his heart that it was too late. “Please drink,” he breathed, biting into his own wrist and holding it to Landon’s mouth in desperation, every fibre of his being wishing for Landon to start drinking his blood to heal him just like Raf had done with Hope’s. He stayed like that for a minute or more but nothing happened and as the reality of the situation began to sink in he laid Landon down gently and moved backwards until his back hit a tree, pulling his knees up to his chest and burying his face in his hands as he sobbed uncontrollably, his heart breaking with the knowledge not just that his brother and best friend was gone but also that he was the one responsible for it. – whatever you need, I'm there –
Landon felt a gentle smile tug at the corner of his lips when Rafael told him that he wanted to stay for himself, too. "That's the spirit." Landon's voice was soft as he spoke, his eyes focused on the other, watching him with the same smile still resting on his lips. "You're right." They had friends and the school was like their home now. They finally had a place to call their own. "Unfortunately." Landon teased with a grin forming on his lips not long after to give off the impression that he was only teasing Rafael when he told him that they were stuck with each other. "Oh my god." Landon breathed out a chuckle that was followed by a shake of his head when Rafael told him to bring it on. When Rafael's arm nudged his own, his lips stretched to form a smile almost immediately. "I know, Raf." Landon said in a soft voice, his eyes focused on his brother.
Landon released a small hum in agreement with Rafael when he told him that it would draw too much attention. He pushed the thought aside because it was definitely not worth it. His eyes softened as he listened to Rafael explain that he'd always liked looking out for people. It was definitely not far from the truth. "Thanks, but right now, looking out for you is my top priority." Landon said with a half-smile resting on his lips. Rafael's next words were enough to make him nod his head a few times, believing Rafael without a doubt in his head. "I know, don't worry. I'm not in any rush whatsoever." Landon said with a brief smile forming on his lips. They will definitely find an answer, whether it was now or later.
Landon realized all too late that he really had pushed Rafael too far. His attempt at making Rafael realize that he wasn't a monster was ruined completely and Landon tried to reason with Rafael, he tried to get him out of that thirsty daze that made him drink more and more of Landon's blood without pausing but his words were falling on deaf ears and Landon was soon realizing that he really was screwed. "I pushed you too far, didn't I? Shit. I'm so sorry, Raf. I'm really, really sorry." Landon should have taken it easy on him but instead, he pushed Rafael too far off the edge and the consequences were too dire as Landon's vision began growing hazy. "Raf..." Landon called out, his voice sounding weak already as his legs gave out under him. "It's okay, Raf. This isn't your fault---" Landon knew that he didn't have much blood left in him but Rafael wasn't slowing down and eventually, his eyes fluttered shut as the darkness consumed him, but not before releasing another soft 'I'm sorry' for screwing up so goddamn bad. He never opened his eyes again, not even as Rafael tried to get him to drink his blood to wake him up.
He was gone.
