Jed’s day had started as normal. He was studying for the most part until he reached for the remote to switch on the TV to keep it as a background noise while his pen moved across the paper, his brows furrowed together in concentration. Though he came to a halt when he heard some familiar news. There had heard of some disturbances and strange sightings in the woods according to the news. The way the reporters put it made it sound like a wolf was running about, causing havoc wherever it went. Jed pushed himself up from his seat after turning off the TV. He started making his way into Dr. Saltzman’s office, though not before knocking beforehand. “Hey, Doc.” Jed greeted with a half-smile resting on his lips before he made his way over to the empty seat in front of the man. “We have a situation. It’s not at the school, though. So don’t worry about that.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following as he held his hand up momentarily before lowering it back on his lap again. “Okay, so, you know that the full moon was yesterday, right? I believe that we may have a situation in the woods.” Jed pointed out as he scratched the back of his neck. “I think someone might still be in there. Could be an actual person, or just a wolf who followed our scents yesterday and now thinks that we’re either its pack or rivals. It’s worth checking out, no?” Jed’s shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug as he moved his hands animatedly while he talked.
“I gotta tag along, though. Just to make sure that you’re safe and to see if I can use my status as an Alpha to make the wolf submit, just to make sure it doesn’t hurt anyone.” And that’s how Jed found himself heading into the woods with Alaric by his side. Jed looked around him, sniffing every now and then to see if he could pick up a scent, but there was nothing yet. “Maybe we need to head deeper.” Jed pointed out as he stuffed his hands inside the pockets of his jacket, his eyes relaxed ahead of him. “You doing good, though, Doc? Everything good with you?” Jed asked as a way to open a conversation so they could both find something to talk about while they were investigating the wolf sighting.
“I know things have been hectic lately at the school with the news students and all. I think a part of me hasn’t processed that Raf is actually a hybrid n–” Jed stopped midsentence with a frown suddenly tugging at his features at the scent that hit his nose in waves. That’s how strong it actually was.
Jed stopped and looked around him, the same frown still digging into his features. “Do you smell that?” He asked before remembering that Alaric doesn’t have the strong sense of the smell that he does. “Blood. I smell blood. A lot of it actually.” Jed started walking and this time, his steps were a lot quicker as he began following the strong scent of blood which led him to an injured man. “Oh my god.” Were they too late? Did the wolf already hurt someone? Jed looked around for any sighting of the wolf but he couldn’t find it anywhere. He wasn’t about to look for it, either. He was too fixated on the injured man as he rushed to the man’s side. “What should we do, Doc? He looks pretty hurt.” Jed moved his hand to rest it on the side of the man’s neck just to make sure that he was alive and thankfully, he was. “Should we take him back to the school?” It was far from safe in the woods and Jed didn’t feel okay with the thought of leaving him out there.

The school year seemed to be going by quite quickly but that was something that Ric had grown used to ever since the Salvatore School opened. When he and Jenna had talked about starting a school it had been a way to protect Lizzie and Josie and make sure that they had a safe place to grow up where they could be themselves and be surrounded by other kids who were just like them. Neither of them could have guessed that so many of the kids around town would end up being aged up over night but they’d adapted the best they could and the school had ended up becoming everything that they had wanted it to be and more. There weren’t any other schools out there that could give supernatural kids the chance to learn about their powers in a safe environment and he couldn’t deny that he was proud of everything that they had done there. They had a way of finding the kids who needed them most and bringing them to the school and so far they had helped so many already, more than Ric had thought that they would in fact. Ric knew that he could have taken a backseat and just focused on running the school with Jenna rather than teaching as well but that just wasn’t his style. He loved teaching history and he also taught the students how to fight not so that they could hurt others but so that they could protect themselves and others if they needed to. That day hadn’t been quite as exciting as he’d had some paperwork to fill out so needless to say he was relieved to have a distraction when Jed knocked on the door to his office. “Hey Jed, what’s up?” he asked, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at the boy. Jed was someone he had helped even before the school had opened, he had taken the boy in and the truth was that, like Jeremy, Jed was a son to him just as much as Kyle was. He was family and that was never going to change. “That’s good,” he nodded as Jed said they had a situation but that it wasn’t at the school. More than anything Ric wanted to keep the students safe so he was glad that there wasn’t a threat to them that he had to worry about right now. “It’s definitely worth checking it out. If there is someone out there and they’re hurting people then we need to stop them,” he added. He knew that was what Jed meant when he said that they had a situation, that was what those words always meant these days but no matter what happened they always dealt with it and Ric knew that this time wouldn’t be any different. As Jed said that he had to tag along to make sure that he was safe, Ric felt his smile widen. “You’re worried about me,” he said, a teasing note to his voice as he spoke. “You really don’t need to do that but I won’t deny that having an Alpha on hand could be useful,” he admitted. Scott had explained some of the things that Alphas were able to do when he first arrived in Mystic Falls so Ric knew that he would be foolish to turn Jed’s offer down. “Just promise me you’ll be careful, I don’t want you getting hurt,” he added gently, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if anything happened to Jed. It wasn’t long before they were heading into the woods. Ric didn’t know what they were going to end up facing but he knew that they would figure something out. “Yeah, I’m fine. Looking forward to the weekend though,” he admitted, unable to deny that it had been a long week so some time with the family was just what he needed. “How about you?”So much had changed lately and Ric was doing his best to help those around him as much as he could but there was only so much that he could do. Eventually they all had to find their own way but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t be there to offer them some guidance when they needed it. “I didn’t see that coming either,” he admitted as Jed said that he hadn’t processed that Raf is a hybrid yet. Stopping as he realised that Jed had come to a stop, Ric’s brow furrowed for a moment as he tried to smell what it was that Jed was smelling. There was definitely something on the air and he nodded, not hesitating in following Jed in the direction that the blood was coming from as the boy led the way. As Jed moved forward to check on the man, Ric’s gaze surveyed their surroundings as he tried to make sure that whatever was responsible wasn’t still out there. “He shouldn’t even be alive after losing that much blood,” Ric admitted, finally satisfied that they were alone. “We can’t leave him here, we’d better take him back with us. Hopefully he’ll be able to tell us what did this,” he nodded as he moved to the man’s other side. “Can you help me with him?” he asked, knowing that it would be easier with two. Together they managed to get the guy back to the school and they set him down on the bed in one of the empty bedrooms. Most were taken by students but there were still some that were empty and it would give the guy some privacy as he healed as well. “Listen, I need to go tell Jenna what’s going on. Will you be alright here on your own for a bit?”JED SALTZMAN

Jed nodded his head in agreement with Ric when he said that it was definitely worth checking out. “My thought exactly.” Jed agreed with him with a few nods of his head following. He didn’t want to see anyone getting hurt. The thought alone didn’t sit well with Jed and just in case there was someone trapped inside of their wolf form, unable to transform back, he wanted to be there to help them. As much as possible. Jed had spent so much time acting like a terrible alpha and now… Now he wanted to do better, he wanted to prove that he wasn’t a carbon copy of his own father. That abusive bully.
Jed’s eyes widened when Ric was able to see right through him by calling him out. Jed reached up and scratched the back of his neck sheepishly, his lips parting and closing in what seemed to be a scramble for words, but he fell silent instead as a soft chuckle fell from his lips. “Maybe a little worried.” He wasn’t just a ‘little’ worried, he was definitely quite worried because he didn’t want the man to get hurt. He was the first person who ever believed in Jed, who treated him so patiently and with so much love. The only person who ever treated him that way was his mother and she was no longer alive. Being treated like that again brought a keen sense of nostalgia and Jed liked it. A lot. He never wanted that feeling to go away. “I know I don’t, but I still want to.” Jed assured with a quick shrug of his shoulders following, his smile tugging on the corner of his lips when he realized that he didn’t need to coax the man to agree. “Perfect. I’m ready whenever you are.”
Ric’s next words made Jed stare at him for a few moments before a smile tugged on his lips. “Now who is worried about who?” Jed teased in a light-hearted voice. “I promise.” Jed added a moment later with a grin forming on his lips briefly. “Oh, me too, honestly.” Jed was definitely looking forward to the weekend. The school has been a little hectic, so it was always a bit overwhelming at times and the only time he could unwind was on the weekends. “Pretty good, yeah. Been studying pretty hard to catch up on the things I missed.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following, his lips stretching to form a small smile.
Jed nodded his head in agreement with Ric when he said that he hadn’t seen it coming when Ric became a hybrid. It sounded pretty cool, actually. But at the moment, he wanted to have a better grasp on being a good alpha and an even better wolf before thinking about becoming a hybrid. Jed stopped in his tracks when he picked up on the scent of blood. A lot of it, actually. Jed rushed to the source of the blood and found himself looking at an injured man. “Yeah, that’s definitely why we shouldn’t linger out here.” Jed wanted to get him to safety as soon as possible. He wanted to save him. “Okay, yeah. I got him.” Jed held the man upright with Ric, his eyes worriedly scanning over the man’s features before moving down to his wounds.
Jed helped Ric get the wounded guy back to the school and soon enough, they were laying him down on the bed where Jed lingered beside him, his worried eyes still focused on the man. “Yeah, ‘course. I’ve got this.” Jed nodded his head a few times with a hint of a smile resting on his lips. When Ric left, his eyes moved back to the wounded boy, watching him quietly for a few moments. “Who did this to you?” Jed whispered as his concerned eyes scanned his wounds. He momentarily moved away but that was only so he could grab a chair and pull it closer to the bed. He sat down not long after, his eyes still on the wounded guy. “God, you must be in a lot of pain.” Jed reached out to gently place it on his arm, using his alpha abilities to speed up the healing process and hopefully take away some of his pain.

News reports about animal attacks around Mystic Falls weren’t uncommon but the truth was that they rarely were animal attacks. The supernatural population in Mystic Falls was so much higher than anywhere else that Ric had ever been and that had surprised him at first when he had arrived in town but now it was something that he had learned to live with. The days where he thought that anyone who wasn’t human was bad were long gone, he had learned the truth a long time ago and he hadn’t looked back since. Ric knew that there was good and bad in everyone, both human and supernatural alike, and it was the part a person chose to listen to that mattered rather than what they were. Now his wife and two of his daughters were siphoners, two of his sons were werewolves, Elena was a vampire and Jeremy was a Special Child. There was a time when that might have bothered Ric but it didn’t any longer and he hoped that in time others would come around to the same mindset. For now all he could do was try and keep his family, friends and all of the kids and staff at the Salvatore School safe. He didn’t hunt as much these days but he still did when it was called for and after Jed told him about the news report Ric knew that it was going to be one of those days. A lot of the time these days Ric thought he knew what to expect but he hadn’t expected Jed to be worried about him. “Alright,” he nodded, a half smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as Jed said that he knew he didn’t have to worry about he wanted to. Jed had come a long way from the boy who hardly ever talked that he had been when Ric took him in and he couldn’t deny that he was proud of the boy for that. Ric had seen the way that Jed was around some of the other students and he knew that the boy could do better but rather than telling him Ric knew that he needed to let Jed figure it out for himself and he was determined to be there for him when he did. “I’m the adult, I’m allowed to worry about you,” Ric chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. He worried about all of the kids, both those in his family and those who attended the school. They had it so much harder than it had been for him while he was growing up and he knew that he didn’t want anything to happen to them. “You’ll get there and if you ever find yourself needing help let me know,” Ric nodded. He was certain that Jed could catch up on his own but Ric didn’t want the boy to struggle so he knew that he would help if Jed needed it. How the guy they had found was still alive Ric had no idea but he knew that Jed was right, it wasn’t safe for them to stay out there. They had no idea what had attacked the guy but the scent of blood alone had been enough to draw Jed to him and if he had been able to smell it then Ric didn’t doubt that others would too. “We’d better take it easy, we don’t know how badly hurt he is.” Moving him really wasn’t ideal but Ric knew that they didn’t have a choice. They had to move carefully and make sure that they didn’t make things worse for the guy but finally they made it back to the school and were able to get him settled. “Great. I’ll be back soon but in the meantime let me know if you need me or if he wakes up,” he nodded before heading off to find Jenna. JED SALTZMAN

Mystic Falls was meant to be a fresh start but whether heading there proved to be a good decision or not remained to be seen. The town was meant to be a beacon for the supernatural and Ben knew that meant that there were probably plenty of creatures there that would want to kill him but there was also a chance that he might be able to finally find someone to help him so he knew that it was worth the risk. For thousands of years he had been trying to find a way to break the curse that his father had had placed on him but to no avail. He was betrayed by Qetsiyah and others had tried to help him but nothing they tried ever worked out. Ben knew that there was a chance that the curse couldn’t be broken at all but he knew that he couldn’t afford to lose hope. He had been on his own for such a long time and along the way he had even found himself praying to his father, to God, to the other angels, to anyone who might listen to ask them to put him out of his misery once and for all but no one ever listened or, if they did, they never responded. Ben felt completely and utterly alone and he knew that he needed to change that. He had made some friends along the way and during the war he’d found a sense of camaraderie that he hadn’t found for a long time but that had ended at the same time the war had and he had been on his own ever since. He didn’t just want to find a way to break the curse, he also wanted to find a place where he would actually fit in and build a life for himself and he hoped that Mystic Falls was going to be that place. Unfortunately he had only just arrived in town when the first creature found him and it was all Ben could do to lure the creature out to the woods so as not to draw too much attention to what was about to happen. He knew that he could fight back but it never did any good and the truth was that he had stopped doing that a long time ago. He never fought to protect himself any longer, he only ever fought to protect others because he knew that his death was inevitable anyway, as was his resurrection. It was an endless cycle of torment that he couldn’t seem to break but he wasn’t giving up, not yet. Naturally the creature attacked and Ben didn’t even try and stop it from killing him. If he tried to resist it only drew the torture out even longer and the truth was that he was tired of it. Tired of fighting the inevitable and tired of the pain that resisting brought with it. Instead it was easier to just let it happen but this time when he revived something was different. He had started breathing again before he had been found out in the woods although that was something that he hadn’t been aware of and his body had already started to heal. By the time they reached the school his wounds were beginning to close and his internal injuries were already beginning to knit themselves back together. This time as his eyes opened he wasn’t met with the sight of trees above him the way he would have done if he had been left on the ground in the woods like he had thought he would be, this time he was in a room and as he moved his head to the side his eyes widened in surprise as he took in the sight of the man sitting in a chair next to him. “Where am I? What am I doing here?” he asked quickly as he pushed himself up into a sitting position, not bothering to ask what had happened because it was always the same although the way his heart started to race a little at the sight of the man was definitely new. There was something about the guy that gave Ben the impression that he didn’t mean him any harm, however, and that was enough to have his expression softening somewhat. “Who are you?”JED SALTZMAN

If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
“Oh wow, pulling the adult card, huh?” Jed said with a chuckle falling from his lips shortly after. He knew that no matter what, Alaric was going to worry about him, and in truth, Jed was always worried about Ric and the rest of his family because they meant so much to Jed. They made him happy. He finally felt at home again. He was pretty sure he stopped feeling that way when his mom passed away because when she passed away, she took with her everything that made his life in the pack bearable. Without her, he found himself standing face to face with his abusive father with no armor to protect him from the man. Jed snapped out of his thoughts and found himself looking at Alaric, his lips stretching to form a small smile before he nodded his head a few times. “I know. Thanks.”
But then the night took a sudden turn when he picked up on the scent of blood that rolled off in waves and when he followed the scent, he found a badly wounded man who seemed to be hanging onto life by a thread. A thread that could easily snap at any given moment and Jed didn’t want that to happen. He nodded his head in agreement with Alaric when he told him to take it easy. He was a lot more gentle than he usually was as he guided the man closer and closer to the school where they gently laid the wounded male down on the bed. “Okay.” Jed nodded his head a few times with an assuring smile on his lips which faded slowly when Ric left the bedroom, giving them some privacy.
Jed kept his hand on the man’s arm to make sure that he helped speed up the healing process for him. He stayed where he was for a while until he woke up and actually turned his head to look at Jed which made his breath hitch as he stared dumbly at the guy without offering him a response at first. God, he could feel his heart doing this thing — it was doing the whole beating irregularly thing. Was he startled? That had to be it, right? It can’t be because his eyes were so mesmerizing and so bright now that he wasn’t so close to dying.
Jed’s lips parted and closed a few times as he searched for the right words to say and when the guy pushed himself up to a sitting position, looking surprised to find himself in a completely different environment. Honestly, Jed didn’t blame him. Not even in the slightest. “Woah, hey, easy. You shouldn’t move so much.” Jed held his hands to show that he meant no harm. He stood up from where he was sitting, his eyes still focused on the other, ignoring the way his heart was beating so erratically now that he was on the receiving end of that soft gaze.
“Okay, uh, let’s start from the beginning. My name is Jed.” Jed pressed his hand against his chest as he introduced himself. “You’re at the Salvatore School for the young and gifted. You’re safe here from whatever attacked you in the woods. I promise.” It was a big promise to make, but he meant it. He’ll protect him. “I found you in the woods while Doctor Saltzman, the headmaster of the school, and I were looking for a rogue wolf in the area. You were badly hurt, so we took you to the school to give you the chance to heal in peace. I should probably call Doctor Saltzman now that you're awake, but uh, I'm gonna give that a minute to not overwhelm you.” Jed explained in a rather calm voice, his hands moving animatedly as he spoke. “Can you, uh, can you tell me your name? And — and what happened to you? If you wanna talk about it, that is.”

Ever since his father had cursed him, Ben had hated the angel. He knew that he shouldn’t have stolen magic from Heaven and brought it to Earth but he had been desperate to save Ashur and with his prayers going unanswered he really hadn’t thought that there was any other choice. He had already lost everyone else that had mattered to him and the thought of losing the man he loved had proved to be too much. In the end his attempts had all been in vain but he had known that he’d at least had to try and he had been paying for it ever since. For thousands of years he had been hunted by monsters, killed and revived so he could go through it all over again. It was no way to live and he desperately wanted to find a way to break it but deep down he knew that this was his last chance. He had tried everything else he could think of and nothing had worked so he knew that he just had to hope that there would be someone in Mystic Falls who could help him when everyone else had been unable to do so. Of course he should have known it wasn’t going to be that easy as he had only just set foot in the town when a monster found him and he had thought that it would end up going the same way that it always did and that when he came to he would be alone. That was how it had been for such a long time but this time as his eyes opened he knew that something had changed. He wasn’t in the woods any longer, he was in a room and even before he opened his eyes he became aware of the feeling of someone’s hand on his arm. Ben wasn’t very good at keeping people in his life, the last true friend he’d had who had known the truth about him he had ended up losing to old age and since then he’d had people come and go from his life but there hadn’t been anyone who had actually cared about him since the war. As his gaze came to rest on the man beside him, Ben felt something that he hadn’t for a long time. He had been attracted to people since Ashur but he hadn’t let any of them stay in his life for very long. This was the first time in as long as he could remember that he had felt an attraction this strong, though, but he knew that he needed to be careful. For so much of his life he had seen threats around every corner and to begin with he wondered if he was in more trouble now than he realised but the man didn’t seem like he wanted to hurt him and Ben could see that the man was worried when he sat up. “Fear not for I’m a quick healer,” Ben said, a half smile touching his lips as he looked over at the younger man. That was one good thing about the curse at least. “It is nice to meet you, Jed.” As the man explained where he was, Ben shook his head. “I’m not safe anywhere and you’re not safe while you’re with me,” he said, knowing that his words were completely true even if they might not make sense to Jed right now. “No one at this school is safe while I’m here.” Ben knew that he needed to leave before another monster found him and hurt those in its path to get to him but the truth was that his body hadn’t finished healing yet and wouldn’t do for a little while so he knew that he needed to stay where he was until then, he just hoped that nothing would find him in the meantime. “Thank you, I appreciate that,” he admitted as Jed said that he would give him a minute before calling anyone else. He didn’t know who this Doctor Saltzman was but it was clear that Jed trusted him and that alone was enough to make Ben think that he couldn’t be a bad guy but he knew that he didn’t want to endanger anyone else. As Jed asked if he could tell him his name and what had happened to him, Ben hesitated for a moment. He knew that he didn’t want to drag Jed into this but he didn’t seem freaked out by what he must have found in the woods so there was a small slither of hope inside of Ben that he might have found someone who could help him after all. “I will not tell you the name I was given when I was born because you could never pronounce my real one. These days I go by Ben,” he explained, letting his eyes meet the other man’s once more. “As for what happened, it was the same thing that always happens. A monster found me, killed me and then I came back so it could happen all over again. That’s why I need to get out of here as soon as I’ve finished healing. I will not put you or anyone else in danger.”JED SALTZMAN

“I can see that.” Jed said with a breathless chuckle of disbelief falling from his lips as he noticed that the other had healed a lot quicker than expected. It was all too clear to Jed now that the man was not a human. It was definitely a good thing, or the other would be in a whole world of hurt by now. A small smile formed on Jed’s lips when the other told him that it was nice to meet him, his hand sheepishly moving up to rub the back of his neck, unsure why his heart was acting up so much. Jed’s brows quirked up when he told him that he wasn’t safe anywhere and that Jed wasn’t safe while he was with him. That no one at the school was safe while he was here. “No, no, hey, look, we have some pretty strong barriers protecting us.” Jed assured him, his brows still furrowed with confusion as his hands moved as he talked. “You’re safe here with us. Nothing will be able to get you in here.” Jed continued assuring him in a soft voice. Maybe that should have rung alarm bells in Jed’s head, maybe that should have been enough to get Jed to ask the man to leave, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. No. He wanted to protect him.
Jed felt a small smile tug at the corner of his lips before he nodded his head. “Of course.” There were so many questions circling around in Jed’s head. He wanted to know so many things that he had no idea where to even start at this point. “Never? It’s that difficult? Wow. Here I thought my parents were cruel for naming me Jedidiah.” Jed teased in a light-hearted voice as his lips spread into a smile as he introduced himself as Ben. “Simple. I like it.” Jed praised with a grin forming on his lips as he slowly sat back down on his chair, keeping his movements slow so he wouldn’t spook Ben.
Jed’s eyes widened slightly as he listened to Ben, his concern coming back in waves as he continued listening to his story. Or at least, some of it. “What?” Jed breathed out. “This is literally the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever heard. This isn’t the first time this has happened to you?” Jed looked shocked and heartbroken to hear this. “This isn’t right.” Jed’s brows tugged down in a frown. “This isn’t even living. This is just … pure torture.” Jed whispered as he shook his head gently. “No, hey, don’t worry about me, or any of us for that matter. The bonus point about being a student here is that everyone here is a supernatural being, so we’re more than capable of protecting ourselves. Right now, you’re my priority. We need to figure out a way to stop this from happening.” Jed nodded his head stubbornly, refusing to relent. He wasn’t going to encourage the other to leave. “Please stay.”

Ben had reached out and asked for help in the past but nothing had worked. One woman had spent her whole life trying to help him and she hadn’t been able to find a way to break the curse so deep down he knew that it was probably a lost cause but even so he still couldn’t bring himself to lose hope just yet. If he did then he knew that he might as well go back to being chained up in a cave and that was something that he never wanted to go through again. Fighting back when the monsters found him didn’t do any good, in fact it made it that much worse, but fighting for those around him was something different entirely and he had done that before. Jed had shown him kindness by bringing him to the school and he knew that he needed to find a way to repay that. “And yet you don’t seem surprised by it,” Ben admitted as Jed said that he could see he had healed quickly. It didn’t matter what happened to Ben, he always healed in the end but more often than not it was incredibly painful when he did. Ben had learned a long time ago that he would outlive everyone around him and it made it difficult to see a future with anyone in it but there was something about Jed that made Ben feel safe. He could tell that the guy meant it when he said that he would be safe there but Ben still wasn’t convinced. “I’m afraid you don’t understand, they won’t stop,” Ben sighed. “If they can’t get to me in here then they’ll go after anyone that stands in their way.” That was the way that it had always been and he knew that he couldn’t have anyone get hurt for him, especially not Jed. Whether or not Jed would get into trouble for not telling the Headmaster what was going on straight away Ben wasn’t sure but he hoped that Jed wouldn’t end up getting into trouble because of him. “Languages have changed a lot since then. It wouldn’t mean anything to anyone now, names like mine have been lost to time,” he admitted before chuckling as Jed said that he thought his parents were cruel for naming him Jedidiah. “Trust me, it could have been much worse,” he grinned. “I do too. It’s simple, like Jed. I like simple,” he nodded, his eyes locked on Jed’s as he spoke. He wasn’t sure what it was about the other man but Ben couldn’t deny that he felt a connection and in that moment he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to keep Jed safe, even if that meant never seeing him again. He couldn’t be selfish. “Believe me, we haven’t even reached the ruinous part yet,” Ben admitted, his eyes closing for a moment as he looked away before forcing himself to turn back to look at Jed. “When we do you’ll see why I can’t stay.” It had been such a long time since he had last told someone his story but there was something about Jed that he trusted. “This is my life and it has been for a very long time,” he shrugged as Jed said that it wasn’t living, it was pure torture. It was the life that his father had doomed him to thousands of years before. As Jed spoke again, a sigh escaped Ben’s lips. “I learned a long time ago that fighting what is to come only brings more pain later. I don’t want that for any of you,” he explained. “You may want me to stay but I’m sure that your Headmaster will not, not when it means putting all of you in danger. You may all be supernatural here but I bet you’ve never faced anything like this.” No one he had met ever had and he knew that he couldn’t bring his curse down upon the school when they had been so kind to him. “I came to town looking for a way to break the curse but I won’t let anyone get hurt for me.”JED SALTZMAN

If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
“Oh, it’s because I’m not a human. I’m a werewolf.” Jed revealed with a quick nod of his head following, his lips stretching to form a soft smile. “That’s why I’m used to the whole thing of unnaturally quick healing.” Jed added a moment later, his voice still soft as he spoke. “I’m not gonna lie and pretend that I’m not curious about what you are, though. It’s clear you’re no human.” He gestured to the stranger’s healed wounds to deliver a point. Jed’s brows furrowed together at the other’s words as his lips parted and closed a few times. “You’re right, I don’t understand. I don’t know who they are, but…” Jed shook his head gently. “I’m still not gonna kick you out.” He remained stubborn as ever, his shoulders lifting and dropping in a quick shrug. His eyes softened as he listened to the other, his shoulders slumping in defeat but he still didn’t ask the other to leave. He couldn’t bring himself to do it. Jed didn’t want to see him get hurt again. “They seem like a really lovely bunch.” Jed breathed out, his disbelief visible in the tone of his voice.
Jed released a soft ‘oh’ at that, his confusion visible on his face as he looked at the other. The way he spoke made Ben sound ancient, but to Jed, he looked young. “You know, I’m one of those people who believe that age is just a number but wow, you made it seem like you’ve been around for thousands of years.” Jed released a chuckle to show that he was joking around. “Hm. Worse than Jedidiah? I don’t quite believe it.” Jed teased with a grin forming on his lips briefly. “Oh, thank you.” Jed dipped his head down, his smile still visible on his lips as he felt an unfamiliar heat rush all the way up to his cheeks.
Strange…
Jed cleared his throat and looked back up again, attempting to show that he was unaffected by all of this. Emphasis on attempting.
Jed’s eyes widened slightly as he listened to Ben’s words. “Wow…” He whispered as he stared at Ben for a moment when the other told him that they haven’t even reached the ruinous part yet and when they do, he’ll see why he can’t let Ben stay.
Oh boy.
“Why do I get the feeling like this story is about to ruin my day?” That was Jed’s question as his eyes remained fixed solely on Ben. “I refuse to believe that,” Jed said with a small frown tugging at his features. “Maybe it’s just a chapter and you know the delightful thing about chapters? They end. It’s not going to be your story. There’s no way.” Jed refused to believe that life could be so cruel as to make Ben suffer endlessly like this. Even if he had done something to deserve it, it was too cruel to be a punishment. “I’m really sorry, Ben,” Jed said with a frown tugging on his features as he listened to Ben explain that fighting only brings pain later.
It didn’t scare Jed away from Ben. It only made him want to protect him even more.
“I’ll talk to him,” Jed said all too quickly when he said that his headmaster might not agree with Jed letting Ben stay. “But in order for me to do that, I need to know more. About you.” Jed pointed out, his voice still soft as his eyes remained fixed on Ben. “You know, if you’re trying to scare me off from letting you stay with us, you’re kinda failing miserably by showing me how much of a good person you are,” Jed added a moment later with a brief chuckle falling from his lips. “A curse? What curse?” Jed asked, his voice still showing his concern for the other. “What happened to you, Ben?”

"That explains a lot," Ben admitted as Jed revealed that he was a werewolf. He had seemed surprisingly at ease about the whole quick healing thing so Ben had suspected that Jed was supernatural himself but he knew that that could have meant any number of things. Ben knew that he was the cause of the creation of so many monsters and those monsters had been hunting him for years as a result. He hadn't known that a school like this was possible but a part of him was glad that Jed hadn't had to go through life feeling like he never fit in anywhere the way Ben had done. As Jed said it was clear he wasn't human, Ben felt a wry smile touch his lips. "You're half right. My mother was human but my father was an angel. I'm a, what's the word... Nephilim," he explained, hoping that he had remembered it right. He had been given a different name for what he was in the past but, like with most things, it had changed as time had gone on. "I don't know who they are either but I fear that once you know the full story you will know exactly what to do with me," Ben admitted. He knew that he had done the wrong thing but ever since he was cursed he had never felt like he belonged anywhere and it was an incredibly lonely existence but it was one he was sure was going to continue. Ben knew that Jed wanted him to stay and there was a part of Ben that desperately wanted to do that and explore whatever this connection was with Jed but he knew that he shouldn't. To do so would only mean putting him in danger and that was the last thing that Ben wanted but he knew that he hadn't healed enough to walk out just yet, his body needed more time so he knew that he needed to stay put for a while. As Jed said he made it sound like he had been around for thounsands of years, Ben knew that the guy was only joking bit even so his smile returned as he spoke. "I have been, or at least I think that's how long it has been. It certainly feels like it," he admitted. The truth was that he didn't know exactly how long it had been as there hadn't been much point in keep in track of it before but he knew that it was been a long time. "Jedidiah really isn't that bad, I've heard much worse," Ben assured him. His own real name was so much worse but he knew better than to try and say it now after such a long time. "Any time," he nodded. The way Jed looked down as he said thank you was enough to bring a smile to Ben's face. He didn't even need to be able to see the other man's face to know that he was having an effect on him and Ben couldn't help but wonder whether Jed felt the connection too. "Because it will," Ben admitted as Jed said that it sounded like the story was going to ruin his day. He could already tell that Jed was a good person and Ben knew that he didn't want to drag him into this mess but he couldn't bring himself to leave just yet either. "That may be true for most stories but not mine," he shrugged. He hadn't quite given up on finding a way to break the curse but he knew that it was unlikely. As Jed apologised, Ben shook his head. "It's fine, I brought this upon myself," he admitted. He didn't believe that he deserved to be punished for as long as he had been but he knew that he wasn't innocent in all of this either. Ben wasn't convinced as Jed said he would talk to the Headmaster, Ben wanted to finally find a place where he belonged and a part of him hoped that this school might be it but after everything that had happened there was still a part of him that was sceptical. "That's where you're wrong, I'm not a good person but I guess I should tell you my story and then you can see that for yourself," he said, lifting his gaze to meet Jed's once more. "I was born a long time ago and I grew up in a village at the base of the Caucasus Mountains. I was raised by a woman I thought was my mother and my best friend Ashur was always by my side. I never knew my father, my mother told me he had died in battle before I was born and I never had reason not to believe her until a man came to our village after my mother died and started telling me a different version of events. He said my birth mother died while giving birth to me and her husband sent me away so the woman who raised me stepped in. He claimed my father was an angel and had wanted to see what would happen when human and angelic blood mixed," he explained, hoping that Jed was following. "I never wanted anything from my father but after Ashur fell ill I prayed for him to be spared but no help came. I took him up the mountain where there was said to be a gateway to my father's home and when he ignored me again I entered his home and took an object I had heard the voices in my head talking about. The item contained magic and I had hoped I could use it to save Ashur but he was already gone. I gave the magic to the humans in my village in the hope that they would use it to make their lives better but they abused it and monsters were created as a result," he continued, knowing that it would be a lot for Jed to take in but needing to get it all out before he lost his nerve. "My father had me cursed for stealing the magic from Heaven, ever since then monsters have hunted me and every time they kill me only for my body to heal and myself to revive so it can happen all over again," he concluded. "I've asked so many people to help me break the curse but so far none have been able to. After a few thousand years I met a witch named Qetsiyah and I thought that she might be able to help but she betrayed me," he added with as shrug. "So you see, that's why I can't stay here. The monsters will never stop coming for me unless I can find a way to break the curse once and for all," he sighed before turning away, not wanting to see the way that Jed would look at him now that he knew the truth. If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
Jed felt a small smile touch his lips. “You’ll soon realize that no one in this school is normal.” He revealed with a quick shrug of his shoulders following, his smile still present on his lips as he kept his eyes fixed on Ben, his hands nervously rubbing up and down his thighs to hopefully wipe away the sweat. Jed was nervous about a lot of things, but he wasn’t nervous about his own safety – he felt oddly safe around Ben, even though the other was still a stranger to Jed. His brows shot up when Ben revealed that he was a nephilim, a son to a human, and an angel, if Jed were anyone else, he would have thought the man was uttering nonsense but Jed knew better. He knew of nephilims because of Jack, the son of the actual devil. “That’s actually pretty damn cool.” Jed admitted with a breathless chuckle falling from his lips not long after, meaning every word of it. He didn’t find it strange or terrifying, if anything he found it to be pretty cool. Jed frowned slightly at the certainty in Ben’s voice. Once again, he was making himself sound like a bad guy but Jed had this doubt that was gnawing away at his insides and it was too hard for him to simply ignore it.
Jed’s eyes widened at that, whispering a soft ‘wow’ under his breath. “One of the students here, her family is pretty old but I have a feeling telling me you’re way older than them. Shit, that’s really cool.” His head was spinning as he was trying to gather all the information but he couldn’t deny that he was still pretty curious about Ben. He couldn’t deny that he wanted to know more about him. “Oh, crap, I don’t mean to call you old, by the way. You don’t look old. You look — uh…” Jed cleared his throat, trying to find the most ‘bro’ compliment he could think of. “Pretty, uh, pretty nice.” He could literally cringe his way out of existence right then and there as his expression turned into a momentary wince. Why did he say that? It was already too late to take it back, so he might as well accept his fate. Jed’s eyes softened at Ben’s reassurance, unable to hide the way his lips stretched into a soft smile. “Thanks.” He avoided using his full name with people because whenever they used his full name, his father’s voice would ring in his head unpleasantly and he didn’t want to think about that man anymore. Jed had never felt this affected by someone before and a part of him wondered if Ben felt the same way, too.
“Oh boy…” That was his answer as Ben confirmed his suspicion. He gestured for Ben to go ahead, his eyes focused solely on the other. Jed frowned when Ben told him that he’d brought this upon himself which made Jed shake his head, refusing to believe that. Whatever he’d done can’t be that bad, right? “Like hell you did... Sorry. I'll let you explain.” Jed wanted to give Ben the chance to talk about what had happened that led up to this moment, which led to him getting cursed. There was that rational side of his brain telling him that maybe Ben was dangerous, that he was giving him too much of his trust but he shoved that side of him down because he just refused to believe it. Jed, in the past, rarely ever allowed his heart to rule him. But now, his heart was taking over and it was making him believe that Ben was just a man with a past that was haunting him. He didn’t want to think that Ben deserved any of this.
Jed bit down on his inner cheeks to stop himself from protesting when Ben told him that he was wrong and that he wasn’t a good person. The reason he stopped himself was because Ben was beginning to tell him his story and that was when Jed leaned forward on his elbows, letting them rest on his thighs as his eyes remained fixed solely on Ben, listening to him carefully as he began telling Jed his story. Jed’s expression went through many emotions as Ben carried on with his story, Jed nodded his head every now and then to show Ben that he was listening to him intently. Jed was pretty sure he’d stopped blinking after a while, too. That’s how invested he was in the story.
Jed’s shoulders slumped when he heard that after everything Ben had tried to do to save his best friend, he was gone. It reminded Jed so much of his mother and it only made his heartbreak, even more, as Ben continued listening to him. There was a small hint of anger on his expression when he realized that his father had punished him for his actions, for trying to save his best friend. Jed didn’t blame Ben in the slightest for giving the magic to the people, he didn’t blame him for not knowing how greedy people could become if they had that much power in their hands. They wouldn’t need to pray to the angels or to God(s) if they had that power for themselves. Ben only wanted to prevent more casualties, so why? Why was he punished for it?
Jed noticed the way Ben turned his head away from him and it made Jed’s heartache intensify. “I’m sorry, but your dad is a dick.” Jed broke the tense silence with that comment at first. “If my best friend was dying, I would have done the exact same thing. I would have marched up to my father and asked him to pull up. To help because isn’t this what angels are supposed to do?” Jed asked with disbelief clear in the tone of his voice as his eyes remained fixed on Ben even though he wasn’t looking at him still.
“You were only trying to save the person who mattered to you the most.” Jed still didn’t believe that the crime that Ben had committed was worth the punishment he was receiving every single day. “I’m sorry for your loss,” Jed added a moment later, his voice still soft but now it had a hint of sadness in it. “Look, I can’t un-curse you, but what I can do is that I can give you a place to stay until we figure out a way to break that curse.” Jed was adamant as ever as his eyes remained fixed on Ben.
“Your story didn’t change my mind, Ben. I don’t think of you any differently. You didn’t know, Ben. You gave them the magic with good intentions in mind. You gave them the magic so they wouldn’t need the angels because from what you’ve just told me, they are merciless and real assholes. You wanted to save them from going through the pain that you went through with Ashur.” Jed wasn’t going to kick Ben out, he wasn’t going to agree with Ben as he, again and again, brought up the fact that he needed to leave. There was just no way.
“You’ve suffered on your own long enough. I’ll find a way to break this curse, or at least, stop the monsters from coming after you.” Jed promised with a determined nod of his head following. “I still want you to stay, Ben. You deserve to have a roof over your head, to feel safe. I believe that the school can offer you that. Before you bring up the safety of the other students, we are all cursed here one way or another. It’s kinda the requirement to be a student here at this school. I mean, I personally have to go through excruciating pain every full moon and pray at the end of every night that I don’t wake up with blood on me but each time, it turns out to be just my drool. Or at least, I hope it is. My point is that everyone here has their own story, their own scars. You’ll fit here with us. We’ll take care of you.” I will take care of you. He wanted to say that out loud but held back from doing so. There was just something about uttering those words out loud that made him so nervous.

It would have been easy for Ben to have given up hope of finding a way to break the curse a long time ago and he would be lying if he said that he hadn’t come close but he just couldn’t bring himself to do so, not yet. Ben knew that Mystic Falls was his last hope, if he couldn’t find a way to break the curse there then he never would and he knew that the chances were probably slim but he had to give it a chance. “I’m starting to see that already,” Ben admitted. Jed hadn’t been bothered at all by anything that Ben had told him so far and that was something that the nephilim had never come across before. Normally it took a while for what he was telling people to sink in but Jed seemed to be taking it all in his stride and it was refreshing to say the least. “I don’t know about that, it has only ever seemed like a burden,” he shrugged as Jed said that it was cool. For a long time he hadn’t known what he was but ever since then it had felt like everything had been going against him. He had tried to save Ashur because he hadn’t wanted to lose the only person that he had left that he loved but it hadn’t worked and he had been paying the price for that ever since. Ben knew deep down that he probably hadn’t even scraped the surface of his own abilities yet but after everything that had happened he wasn’t sure that he wanted to dig any deeper. “I don’t really know what I’m meant to be capable of yet, I’ve had to figure it all out as I’ve gone along.” It hadn’t been easy and he hadn’t had anyone to guide him or explain any of it to him but perhaps now that might change. “Pretty nice, huh?” Ben asked, a knowing smile touching his lips as he looked over at Jed. Ben had lived a long time so he wasn’t oblivious to the way that the younger was looking at him or the way that he was trying to find the right words only to end up embarrassing himself. To begin with he had wondered whether the other could feel the connection between them but now he was certain that he did. Ben had come to terms with his own sexuality lifetimes ago but he wasn’t sure if Jed had yet so he knew better than to press it. “Don’t worry, it will take a lot more than that to offend me,” he assured him. “I imagine I am probably older than most other than my father and his family.” There were perhaps demons still around who were older than he was too but Ben knew that he had lived a long time so there probably weren’t too many. “Any time,” Ben said, his smile returning as Jed thanked him. “For what it’s worth, Jed suits you better.” He could see that Jed wasn’t fond of his full name so Ben was more than happy to stick with the name he preferred and it really did suit him better. Jed’s outburst when Ben said that he had brought this upon himself was enough to surprise the nephilim but it wasn’t long before he was telling Jed his story anyway. After spending such a long time being punished for something it was hard not to feel like he deserved it in some respect. He had never met his father, the angel had wanted to see what would happen if he mixed his blood with that of a human but then hadn’t bothered to stick around to see the result and he had hid like a coward when Ben had finally acknowledged his birthright and tried to take matters into his own hands. Even now he was still hiding behind the curse so Ben knew that he wanted nothing to do with the angel. There was already something inside Ben that wanted to protect Jed and stop him from getting caught up in this mess but the other seemed determined to help him so Ben knew that he needed to let him know exactly what he would be letting himself in for if he did. As Jed spoke once more, Ben felt his smile return. “You’re right, he is,” he nodded. “Ashur wasn’t just my best friend, he and I were lovers and after losing everyone else I couldn’t stand the thought of losing him too,” he explained. They’d had to hide what they were to each other back then but it hadn’t changed the fact that Ben had loved him and he had wanted to find a way to save him. “I thought so too. The people in my village would always pray and sometimes those prayers would be answered but when I begged him to help he didn’t even acknowledge me so I took matters into my own hands,” he explained. At the time he was desperate so it was the only thing that he could have done. He hadn’t known back then that it would result in eternal torture but Ben knew that if he had the chance to do it all over again then he wouldn’t change a thing. “The way the angels tell it my grandfather locked magic away in Heaven because he felt it was too powerful to be let loose on Earth. I went against his wishes by bringing magic here,” he continued. Ben knew that some awful things had been done with magic since he had handed it over to the people in his village but some good had come of it too although he wasn’t sure that his father or the other angels saw it that way. “Thank you,” Ben said as Jed told him that he was sorry for his loss. It had happened such a long time ago and Ben still carried Ashur with him now but so much time had passed since then that he knew he was ready to start something new. He’d had one night stands in the past but he had always ended up leaving in the morning and never seeing them again because he thought that was what was safest for them. He had never found someone he could be himself with and actually start something meaningful with but perhaps Mystic Falls could change that for him too. Ben had turned away from Jed as he had told his story, not wanting to see the judgement in the guy’s eyes as he learned what had really happened, but as he said that he could give him a place to stay until they figured out a way to break the curse Ben couldn’t deny that he was surprised and he finally turned to face Ben, his eyes meeting the other’s. “You really mean that, don’t you?” he asked, unable to get his head around the fact that Jed still wanted to show him kindness now that he knew what he had done. “Perhaps there was a small part of me that wanted to spite my father for turning his back on me but I really did want to give the humans a way to stop being so reliant on the angels,” he explained. For such a long time Ben had been on his own and he hadn’t thought that he had really needed anyone else other than to help him break the curse but there was something about the way that Jed was talking that was enough to make Ben realise that he did need this after all. “You have no idea how good that sounds, I haven’t had anywhere I fit in or felt truly safe for a long time,” he admitted, not even caring if it made him seem vulnerable in that moment. Jed hadn’t judged him for what he had done and he had a feeling that he could really let him in and that was something that Ben hadn’t had with anyone for such a long time. “I’m sorry you have to go through that every month,” he added gently. His heart really did ache for Jed, he likely hadn’t asked for any of this either but he had his own form of torment to endure so Ben supposed they were alike in that respect. “I guess staying here beats passing through the small intestine of a gorgon again,” Ben admitted thoughtfully. “Alright, you’ve convinced me. If it is okay with your Headmaster and you’re sure I would be welcome here then I’d like to stay,” he said decisively. If nothing else there was something about Jed that made him want to get to know the guy better so if he was sure that it would be safe for everyone else then Ben knew that he would be a fool to turn him down. If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
Jed’s lips stretched into a grin at Ben’s words before his shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. It was one of the many cool traits that the school had. No one was going to judge the other, they were all ‘freaks’ in their own way and for once, they all felt like they belonged. Like they didn’t need to pretend to be normal. Jed’s head tilted slightly to the side before he nodded his head in an understanding manner, that would exactly be his response if someone had told him that being a werewolf was ‘cool’, he’d tell them that it only felt like a burden to him. “I understand.” Jed’s voice was soft as he spoke, his eyes still focused solely on Ben. “We can help you with that, I’m sure. I think we have a Nephilim here, too. Aside from you, that is. His name is Jack.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following. He was the one who had given Jack the tour around the school. When it came to tours, Jed was a legendary wingman.
Jed froze when Ben repeated his compliment from earlier when he attempted to fix the way his words had sounded. His lips parted and closed a few times as his eyes moved away from Ben, suddenly invested in his own surroundings rather than Ben’s bright blue eyes — honestly, how are his eyes so blue? it’s kinda unfair — and cleared his throat as his hands moved animatedly but this time, there were no words to accompany it. “It’s just—” Jed was getting so close to malfunctioning right then and there as his heart hammered in his chest. “Anyway, I’m glad it, uh, it didn’t offend you.” Jed carried on instead as he gulped harshly past the lump in his throat. Jed released a soft ‘oh’ when Ben told him that he’s probably older than most other than his angelic family. Jed was getting pretty close to malfunctioning all over again when Ben told him that Jed suits him better. “Ben suits you better, too.” I like simple, like Jed. God, just recalling that line from earlier was enough to make his heart speed up all over again. Oh boy.
Jed’s eyes softened when he heard that Ashur just wasn’t his best friend. He was more than that. He was quiet as he listened to Ben, his expression showing just how much his heart ached for Ben. “That’s so awful of him. If angels occasionally answered prayers and helped people, then why couldn’t he answer yours?” Jed frowned deeply at that before he shook his head. “I’m glad that you took matters into your own hands. I would have done the exact same thing.” Jed remembered how he had taken matters into his own hands when his father tried to get him to kill Trey. He shook his head to toss the thought aside before it could overwhelm him. No. He didn’t want to think about that. “I understand that, but if they didn’t want that magic to wind up on Earth, then they should have done a better job at listening to people’s prayers. I think what you did is justified.” Jed said with a nod of his head following, his eyes focused solely on Ben still. When Ben thanked him for expressing how sorry he was for Ben’s loss, he nodded his head with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Of course.”
Jed nodded his head a few times when Ben asked if he really meant that. “I do. I mean every word.” He said with conviction in the tone of his voice. “I believe you, Ben and I don’t blame you for wanting to spite him. You were hurting and you felt betrayed by your own father. I don’t blame you at all.” Jed assured him in a soft voice, his eyes still focused on Ben. “Well, in this case, welcome in advance to your new home.” The young Alpha said with a smile already on his lips. “It’s okay. It’s starting to get easier.” Jed said with a gentle smile forming on his lips. There was a grin that lit up Jed’s face as he listened to Ben’s words. “Say that after going through your first exam here.” Jed joked in a light-hearted voice as his grin remained on his lips, looking pretty glad to have been able to convince Ben to stay with him at the school. “Really?” Jed said all too happily when Ben said he’d like to stay here. “I’m one hundred percent sure.” Jed added a moment later before he cleared his throat to contain his happiness before he pushed himself up. “Okay, give me a second.” Jed held up his index finger in a ‘wait a minute’ gesture before he started making his way out of the room. He disappeared for a couple of minutes and came back with new clothes in his hands. A red jacket that had the school’s logo, a shirt underneath, and trousers. “Here, you should get changed.” He gestured to all the blood on Ben’s clothes before he cleared his throat and stepped back, standing like a Sim waiting for an order before he realized that he was still in the room. “Oh, right. I should, uh, I should go talk to Dr. Saltzman. I’ll come back in a bit. I’ll leave you to get changed. If you need anything, call my name. I’ll, uh, I’ll be able to hear you anyway.” Jed gestured to his ears to show that he had a supernatural hearing before he excused himself once again, closing the door gently behind him to give Ben some privacy before he began making his way to Dr. Saltzman’s office to talk to him.
“Hey, Dr. Saltzman.” Jed made his way inside after knocking on the door a few times. “Ben’s awake. The, uh, the wounded guy. That’s his name. I need to talk to you about something…” Jed closed the door behind him and began heading toward the chair facing Alaric. He sat down and began explaining everything to Alaric. “I— I might have offered for him to stay already but I know that the decision needs to come from you, but I just— He suffered on his own for so long and I want him to have a shot at a normal life for once. Is it okay if he stayed here at school while we figure out a way to break the curse? Please. I'll be responsible for him. I'll do whatever it takes to make sure we're safe and so is he. What, uh, what do you say?”

Ben had never heard of a school like this but he couldn’t deny that he was intrigued. He had travelled so much over the years and he had met a lot of different people but and some of them were supernatural but the truth was that he had tried to keep his distance for the most part because he hadn’t wanted to tempt fate by having any of them turn on him and try to kill him. He didn’t know exactly how the curse worked or what made creatures want to kill him but thankfully it hadn’t had that effect on Jed and Ben hoped that it would be the same for the others at the school. He had spent so much of his life feeling like he didn’t belong anywhere so he was glad that Jed and the others didn’t have to worry about going through the same thing. He could tell from the way Jed talked about the school just how much it meant to him and Ben was glad he had found his place in the world already. “Really? I’ve never met anyone like me before,” Ben admitted. He had been starting to wonder if perhaps he was the only one so it was a relief to know that he wasn’t. He knew that he probably shouldn’t have done it but Ben hadn’t been able to resist teasing Jed when he said he looked pretty nice. That was probably the last thing Ben had expected him to say but the guy had seemed a little tongue tied so he couldn’t hold it against him. The attraction he felt towards Jed was something that he hadn’t expected but Ben knew enough about himself to recognise it for what it was. Whether the same was true of Jed he wasn’t sure but he knew that he wanted to find out, no matter how long it might take. “It’s okay Jed, what is going on here is perfectly clear to me,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at the other. “You didn’t, it would take a lot more than that to offend me,” Ben assured him, not wanting Jed to worry about that. Ben knew that he was old and the truth was that even if he didn’t look that old, there were times when he certainly felt like it. He had kept on the move so that no one would realise that he wasn’t getting any older but with so many people in town who were supernatural Ben couldn’t help but wonder what it might be like to stay in one place for a while and finally start building a life for himself. “Thanks. A friend gave me the name and I took a liking to it,” he explained. He had never really thought about it too much before that but finding a name that fit in with the current era had made him feel like he was taking a step in the right direction of taking his life back and meeting Jed felt like he was taking another. Telling Jed what Ashur had really been to him was something that Ben knew that he perhaps hadn’t needed to do but he had wanted him to know. Ben wasn’t ashamed of who he was, there was a time when he and Ashur had had to hide what they meant to each other from those around them but it wasn’t like that now. Ben knew that he might be reading too much into the things that Jed was saying and doing and the way he was looking at him, perhaps he was simply seeing what he wanted to see, but it was out there now and he felt better knowing that Jed knew the truth. “That’s a question I’ve been asking myself ever since that day. I’ve never met my father, apparently he wanted to know what a child of his would be like but he has never taken any interest in me. Perhaps even before all of this I wasn’t what he thought I would be, perhaps I was a disappointment,” he shrugged. Ben supposed that he would never truly know either way though and that was something that he was doing his best to make his peace with. “Somehow I don’t doubt that,” he admitted as Jed said that he would have done the same thing. “Even now I don’t regret what I did. Perhaps I should and perhaps that’s what they want me to do but if I had to make that decision to save someone I loved all over again then I wouldn’t change a thing,” he shrugged. “I’m starting to see that,” Ben admitted as Jed confirmed that he meant every word. There was something about the guy that was so sincere and Ben could tell just how much he cared. That was something that he hadn’t had for a long time and he wasn’t so sure that he was ready to leave it behind just yet. “Thank you, that means a lot to me,” he said sincerely. Each time he had told his story in the past he had been met with a different reaction but Jed’s was by far the most understanding. Whether others at the school would react in the same way he had no idea but he meant it when he said that he was going to stay if those in charge of the school would allow him to do so and Ben couldn’t deny that he hoped he would be allowed to stay. If all of the students were like Jed then he knew that he might just have found the kind of place he had been searching for all this time – a place where he would finally fit in. “Just try to remember that the pain is only temporary and I’m sure the abilities you have probably make up for it a little.” He couldn’t imagine what it had to be like having every bone in your body break and reform but Jed seemed to be taking it all in his stride and that truly was admirable as far as Ben was concerned. “I imagine I would fail, I’ve never had any kind of formal education,” he chuckled. Everything he had learned he had picked up as he went along so this was going to be interesting to say the least. “Really. I feel I would be a fool to turn down your offer of help,” he nodded. Jed really seemed to want to help him and Ben knew that he would regret it if he didn’t let him. He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t still wary about staying at the school since he didn’t doubt that the monsters would track him there but he knew that he would do everything in his power to protect the school and its students. A puzzled look crossed Ben’s features as Jed told him to give him a second. He wasn’t sure what was going on but a few minutes later Jed returned with some clean clothes and Ben took them from him. A moment later Jed took a step back but the guy continued watching him and a somewhat amused smile formed on Ben’s face. He was about to ask if Jed was going to stand there and watch while he changed when Jed seemed to realise what he was doing and quickly excused himself. Ben could tell that his body hadn’t yet finished healing but it was getting there and he got out of the bed he had been placed in and changed his clothes. He was still covered in blood but it had dried and the new clothes covered the worst of it at least. He knew there was every chance that the Headmaster might refuse to let him stay and if that happened then Ben knew that he would figure something else out. Ric had managed to find Jenna and had explained to her what was going on. After that he had thought about returning to Jed but he knew the boy would let him know when something happened so instead he headed back to his office to catch up on some paperwork while he wanted. Looking up as someone knocked on the door, Ric called out to let the person know they could enter and was surprised to see Jed. “Hi Jed, how’d it go?” he asked before setting the paper he had been reading down as Jed said that the guy was awake before proceeding to fill him in on the guy’s story. “You would really vouch for him like that?” Ric asked, unable to deny that he was both surprised and proud. Jed didn’t normally go out on a limb for people but he seemed to believe in Ben and Ric was beyond proud of him for that. “Of course he can stay, it sounds like he really needs our help,” he said at last. “Why don’t you show him around the school and I’ll talk to some of our witches and warlocks and see if they can think of anything that might help break the curse?” he suggested.Ben was patient as he waited for Jed to return and he looked up as the door to the room opened. “How did it go?” he asked, hoping that it would be good news and he would be allowed to stay.
