If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
Jed nodded his head a few times with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Really." He confirmed with the same smile resting on his lips. "The difference is that he's Lucifer's son. I'll introduce him to you at some point. Maybe you two can have a, uh, Nephilim kinda talk." Jed offered with a quick shrug of his shoulders. Jed had seen Jack around a couple of times after their tour. He seemed like a harmless kid overall. He was pretty sure that they'd get along well.
Jed was pretty sure he'd just died and entered Heaven right then and there, or maybe he had fallen asleep and this was his deepest desire in the form of an incredibly handsome man. Jed almost wanted to place his hand on his heart just to make sure that it was beating after that comment as Jed's lips parted and closed a few times, his dark eyes relaxing on Ben again as he struggled to piece his sentence together. If he were a program, he'd have a big red error displayed on him right then and there. "You... I..." Elaborative, Jed. Way to go, buddy. Jed looked down, unable to hide the way his cheeks were bright red now. Was he too obvious? Could Ben see right through him? But then again, he wasn't being that secretive because right now, he was just staring at Ben's lips with his own parted. Why do they look so tempting? Jed almost let out a big sigh of relief when Ben carried on and it didn't stop there because he was pretty sure he was going to say something stupid if Ben hadn't. Jed watched Ben carefully for a few moments as he revealed that his name had been given to him by a friend. It really did fit him.
Jed frowned deeply when Ben called himself a disappointment before he shook his head almost instantly. "No, you're not. You could never be a disappointment. Honestly, if I could, I'd punch your dad straight in his stupid angelic face for being such a terrible father." Jed said as he lifted his fist to show that he was serious about that. "Good, because you shouldn't regret it. Who cares about what they want? You did what you did out of love and selflessness. I call that pretty damn brave." Jed praised with a nod of his head following.
Jed felt a soft smile form on his features as he listened to Ben. "It's the least that I can do." Jed said in a soft voice. His gaze softened at Ben's words before he nodded his head in agreement with him. "You're definitely right about that. They do make up for it. I can't imagine not being a werewolf despite how painful it is." Jed admitted with a quick shrug of his shoulders following. Jed's eyes strayed down when Ben started chuckling at his joke before he seemed to realize that he was staring at Ben and quickly blinked a few times and his lips soon formed a nervous smile of their own. "It's okay, we'll, uh, we'll help you study. It's gonna be a walk in the park." Jed said in a light-hearted voice. God, why did Ben have to look so handsome when he smiled or laughed? It's just unfair,
"I'm glad that you're staying, Ben," Jed said with a grin forming on his lips. "You're in good hands now."
Jed chastised himself as soon as he left the room after spending a few seconds standing there after giving Ben his clothes. Why did he linger behind like that? Jed could tell that Ben was already starting to cloud his thoughts. He could barely think straight around him. Jed shook his head to push those thoughts away so he could focus on talking to Alaric.
"Yeah, I totally would." Jed nodded his head a few times with a determined look on his face. Jed's shoulders slumped in relief when Alaric told him that Jed can stay at the school with them. "Of course. I've got it. Thank you for this. You won't regret it." Jed said with a smile resting on his lips. "Okay, yeah, that would be great! I'll help them look later tonight." Jed said with a quick nod of his head following. "I gotta, uh, I gotta tell Ben. Thanks again, Doc." Jed pushed himself up from his seat, his smile still present on his lips as he began heading out of the Headmaster's office, the door closing gently behind him.
It wasn't long before he was knocking on Ben's door and then opened the door so he could head inside. "Looks like you're gonna try my skills as the best wingman at this school," Jed said with a grin resting on his lips. "He said yes. You can stay with us. Welcome to the school, officially." Jed said with the same grin resting on his lips. "C'mon, let's take a look around." Jed gestured with his head for Ben to follow him as he began making his way out of the temporary room that Ben was placed in. Once they were both outside, he placed his hand on Ben's shoulder, giving it a gentle pat, then another one on his arm. "First stop, the study hall." Jed moved his hand away as he began walking next to Ben. "Pro-tip, If you sit near the back left doors you can slip through the kitchen and be the first in line in the kitchen," Jed said with a grin on his lips as he began showing Ben around, carefully stepping by a couple of students so he wouldn't bump into them.
Though not all the other students were as mindful as Jed because one of them almost bumped into Ben, Jed acted instinctively and wrapped his arm around Ben's shoulder to bring him out of the student's way before he lowered his hand. "It's kinda crampy in here, isn't it?" Jed said with a small chuckle falling from his lips. "Do you wanna wait 'til lunchtime? If you're hungry, that is."

Ben’s knowledge of angels was limited, garnered from a number of conversations with various different people over the years, but he wouldn’t be surprised if there was so much that he still had yet to learn. He knew that it was the same with his own kind, there were abilities that he had been able to tap into occasionally but he didn’t completely know how to control them and there were others that seemed just beyond his grasp so he hadn’t yet been able to identify them. Everything he had learned about what he was he had figured out on his own but something told Ben that there was so much more. “Lucifer as in the devil? Wow,” Ben breathed. He wasn’t sure who his father was but he was pretty sure that it wasn’t anyone like that. “That would actually be great, thanks. Hopefully he’ll be able to help me figure out a few things and I might be able to do the same for him as well.” That was something that he could hope for at least and he did. Seeing the way Jed’s lips opened and closed a few times Ben found himself wondering if perhaps he shouldn’t have said what he had done. He knew that it was crazy considering that they had only just met but even so there was something about Jed that he had taken a liking to instantly and he had a feeling that the other guy felt the same way. Ben knew that this was a very different time to the one that he had been born into, during his travels he had seen people acknowledge their same sex relationships in public and no one had seemed to mind. It was the norm now to be honest about who they were and that was what Ben wanted too. He knew that there were only certain people that he could tell that he was a nephilim like those at the Salvatore School but when it came to other things about him then he didn’t have any such reservations. He knew that he perhaps shouldn’t be as forward as he was being but he couldn’t help it. Just one look from Jed was enough to make his heart race and the truth was that Ben couldn’t even remember the last time anyone had come close to inspiring that kind of a reaction from him. In that moment Jed seemed at a loss for words and the way his cheeks flushed red didn’t go unnoticed neither did the way that Jed’s eyes seemed to linger on his lips as Ben’s own eyes did he same but this time Ben chose not to say anything, instead lifting his gaze to meet Jed’s as he revealed more about his past. “Now that I would like to see,” Ben admitted, his heart racing once again at the way Jed sounded almost protective of him. Ben knew that he could be imagining it, after all he literally resurrected every time he died only to go through it all over again, but earlier Jed had said that those at the school could protect him and Ben couldn’t deny that he liked this side of him. “I’m glad you see it that way.” He had gone to Heaven to try and save Ashur’s life and Ben knew that he was never going to regret going to extremes to protect the people he cared about. Those people had been few and far between ever since Ashur died but Jed was quickly falling into that category. As Jed said it was the least he could do, Ben shook his head. “No, you’ve already done so much more for me than you could ever know,” he assured him. “You’re taking a chance on me and not many would do that.” There had been a few people over the years but not too many after he told them his story. Jed was different though, of that he was certain, and he was glad that the younger guy had come into his life when he had done. “Being a werewolf is who you are. It’s who you were meant to be,” he nodded, knowing that was something that he truly believed. “Hopefully. You have your own studies to think about, I don’t want to be a burden,” Ben said gently, knowing that that was the last thing he wanted. Jed already had a life and Ben knew that it wouldn’t be fair for him to show up and completely derail that. “So am I,” Ben admitted as Jed said that he was glad he was staying. It all depended on what the Headmaster said, of course, but if he was allowed to stay then he knew that he would. Jed’s next comment was enough to have Ben’s expression softening once more. He wasn’t sure whose hands Jed meant but Ben couldn’t deny that it was good to be around one person who cared and the truth was that he cared about Jed in return. It didn’t take him too long to get changed once Jed had left the room and the wait for the verdict about whether or not he could stay was agonising. He wouldn’t blame the Headmaster for turning him away when he learned the truth, in fact that was what Ben expected to happen. Instead when Jed returned his reaction wasn’t what Ben had expected at all. “I really didn’t expect that,” he breathed as Jed said that the Headmaster said yes. He wasn’t sure whether Jed had had to convince the man or not but either way he had the chance to stay and he knew that he wanted to take it. “Alright,” he nodded as Jed suggested that they take a look around before following him out of the room. Ben looked over as Jed patted first his shoulder and then his arm before moving his hand away. He knew that he could be reading the signals wrong but every fibre of his being was screaming at him that he wasn’t imagining this and his hand brushed lightly against Jed’s as they walked, needing to know for sure. “I’ll have to remember that,” he nodded although he knew that it wouldn’t really matter to him too much either way. There were a lot of students around and Ben was choosing his way through them carefully but he suddenly became aware of an arm around his shoulders steering him away as another student almost bumped into him. It was the closest they had gotten and once again he felt his heart hammering in his chest but he did his best to ignore it and instead focus on what Jed was saying. “Thank you,” he said, needing Jed to know he was grateful for the guy steering him out of the way of the student that had nearly bumped into him. “Yes, let’s get out of here,” he nodded, knowing that the last thing he wanted was to end up accidentally hurting someone. “I’m starving actually, I always am after I come back,” he admitted as he tried to find a way out of the crowd once and for all. If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
"Yuuup." Jed said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips. "It sounds weird and almost impossible, I know. I'm pretty sure I stared at him for so long with my mouth hanging open when he told me about it. Then I might have, uh, asked him if Lucifer has a sexy English accent and if he has horns and that big fork thing we see in the movies or pictures of the Devil, but to my disappointment, he has neither." Jed tsked with a small shake of his head to showcase his disappointment before he let out a chuckle. "Yeah, you two will help each other out a lot, since I'm not really sure if we have any other Nephilims at the school."
The edges of Jed's lips tugged up higher in a smile at Ben's words. "Well, then, Ben's dad, if you're listening, you're a douche and I'm gonna deck you right in the face if I see you. Angel or not." The thought of hurting an angel made him feel bad deep down, but honestly, it was because he'd always imagined angels as harmless creatures with little harps and those fluffy wings, but Ben's dad sounded like a straight-up asshole. So yeah, he was definitely not going to feel bad about that. "How could I not?" Jed said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips. Jed's eyes softened when Ben told him that he'd already done so much more for him. Jed still felt like it wasn't enough to make up for the centuries of hurt that Ben had gone through. He was going to try his hardest to make it a little more bearable for Ben. He was going to try his hardest to make sure Ben lives a normal life within the walls of the school.
Jed's eyes relaxed on Ben again, his words making his heart clench tightly. He really did appreciate Ben saying that to him because deep down, it was something he'd been yearning to hear. A grateful smile formed on Jed's lips before he nodded his head a few times. "Oh, please. You won't be. Maybe explaining the subjects to you will make me understand them a lot quicker." Jed teased with a light-hearted chuckle falling from his lips. Jed knew that he had an important task in his hands now. He needs to convince Dr. Saltzman to let Ben stay and honestly, deep down, he knew that Alaric would never turn Ben down. Alaric wasn't the type of person to do something like that. So, maybe Jed wasn't so worried about the man's answer. Jed left Ben's room so he could carry on with his task and when he got the answer he needed, he felt a huge weight lift off his shoulders. Now, it was only a matter of telling Ben that he was officially a student with them at the school.
Jed's lips stretched into a grin at Ben's words before his shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. "I'm pretty good at negotiating." Jed buffed up his chest before he deflated a moment later. "Actually, Dr. Saltzman didn't need much convincing, if that makes sense. He agreed to help you right away, so I can't really take the credit for that." Jed added a moment later before a brief chuckle fell from his lips.
Jed began showing Ben around, his hand tingling in a strange way after patting Ben's shoulder and arm but he brushed that aside for now. "It's definitely gonna save your time." Jed said as a response when Ben told him that he'll have to remember the pro-tip. It was pretty boring, just standing there with a tray in your hands waiting for food, so being the first in line was pretty important. Jed felt his heart speed up when Ben's hand brushed against his own in such a light manner that Jed almost thought he'd imagined it. Jed didn't pull away as if disgusted, he didn't give Ben an odd look. He didn't hate it at all.
If anything, there was a small smile on his lips that made him look like an idiot. Almost instinctively, his index finger brushed against Ben's hand. Jed was doing a lot of things without thinking, which wasn't something new because Jed barely had a working brain cell most of the time but this was so new to him and he was definitely letting his heart dictate each move. He seemed to snap out of it just on time to save Ben from getting bumped into. "It's okay." Jed assured Ben when the other thanked him. "Okay, c'mon, the bell's about to ring." Jed could see a few students beginning to get up, so in an attempt to reach the door faster than them, he reached for Ben's hand without realizing and began moving a bit faster than most of them until he reached the back left doors, looking all too pleased with himself. "See? First in line." Jed said with a smile already present on his lips as his eyes moved to settle on Ben again.
When the bell rang, the kitchen doors opened and Jed entered the kitchen and reached for two trays. He seemed to realize right then and there that the reason he couldn't reach for the trays with both hands was that he was holding onto Ben's hand.
Oh.
Jed looked down at their hands before he looked up at Ben again before he released his hand with a nervous chuckle falling from his lips. "Sorry." If he didn't have the capability to get sick, he'd think he was running a fever from how hot his face was. God, speaking of hot faces, Ben really did have a handsome face. Jed snapped out of his thoughts when he heard a sigh behind him and that seemed to finally make him move. He handed the tray to Ben so that they could fill it with food. "Uh, c'mon. Let's... Let's fill this bad boy up and go somewhere quiet to eat."

Ben’s expression turned to one of confusion for a moment as Jed spoke about Lucifer. “Why would you think Lucifer would have an English accent?” he asked, not knowing enough about anything modern to know what the reference met. Ben knew that he was out of place in the world, he had a lot to catch up on and he knew that nothing was going to stop him from doing that. Jed had been so kind to him that he had a feeling that the guy wouldn’t mind helping him catch up either. Ben wouldn’t have blamed Jed for running a mile when he told him the truth but he hadn’t done that and Ben was pretty sure that he was going to stick around. It had been such a long time since he had last had anyone in his corner like that and he knew that he wanted to do the same for Jed in return. “That wouldn’t surprise me, listening to the angels talking hurts but before I blocked them out I did hear them say that having a child with a human became forbidden after my father cursed me.” He wasn’t sure if that was a direct result of what he had done but either way it really didn’t surprise him at all that there weren’t many nephilims out there. He had never come across anyone like him before so he knew that he would take the chance to learn more about his kind while he had the chance. He couldn’t help but laugh at Jed’s next words and a smile formed on his face. “I wouldn’t put it past you to follow through with that,” he grinned. There was something so sweet about how protective Jed seemed to be of him that was enough to make his heart melt. Ben wasn’t used to having anyone like that in his life, not since Ashur died, and for the first time he felt like he was ready to move on to the next chapter of his life. For far too long he had been wallowing in what had happened and holding on to someone who had died such a long time ago. Now things were changing, hopefully for the better, and with any luck Jed might end up staying in his life for a while to come. As Jed spoke again, Ben’s smile turned gentle. “I wouldn’t have blamed you for turning me away, you wouldn’t have been the first,” he admitted. “In the past I’ve told people my story and they haven’t wanted to get involved in anything with the angels.” There had been one or two exceptions along the way who had helped him willingly but there were others who had only helped him because he had been able to give them something in return. Looking over at Jed now he knew that the guy was one of the exceptions and Ben knew that he was lucky to have been found by him. “In that case perhaps we can figure this out together,” he said, his smile widening as he looked over at Jed. “Just promise me that if it does get too much you’ll let me know?” he asked, knowing that the last thing he wanted was for Jed to end up falling behind on his account. The wait to find out whether or not he would be able to stay at the school was agonising but the truth was that he was more concerned about whether or not he would be able to stay with Jed. He hadn’t found anyone who affected him like this in such a long time and he wasn’t really sure where he stood with Jed but he couldn’t deny that some of the looks Jed gave him no doubt mirrored looks that Ben gave him in return. He liked Jed and Ben knew how precious the time he was able to spend with the people he cared about was so he knew that he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. “I’ll have to make sure to thank him, I thought I might be making a mistake when I decided to come to Mystic Falls but now it’s looking like the best thing I could have done.” He wasn’t used to finding anyone as quick at accepting who he was or as eager to help him as Jed had been and Dr Saltzman seemed to be and he could only hope that the same would prove to be true of the others at the school. “You won’t hear any arguments from me and don’t worry, I won’t give your secrets away,” Ben said, his smile returning as his eyes met Jed’s. Following him through the school, Ben knew that he was taking a risk by letting his hand brush against Jed’s but he knew that if the guy felt uncomfortable with it then he could pass it off as being just an accident since there were a lot of people around them. Jed didn’t move away from him or anything like that, though, in fact as Ben glanced over at him he could see the smile that had formed on Jed’s face and it was enough to draw a half smile to his own face in return. Moments later Jed’s finger was brushing against his hand and Ben moved a little closer still, unable to ignore the electrifying feeling that passed through him at every touch from Jed, no matter how small. Ben hadn’t expected Jed to pull him out of the way as another student almost bumped into him and all he could do was nod as Jed said that the bell was about to ring. Before Ben could react Jed was reaching for his hand and pulling him through the doors he had talked about. He wasn’t sure if Jed had even realised what he had done but it was enough to make Ben’s heart hammer in his chest as his gaze drifted down to look at their joined hands and he couldn’t help but smile as he followed Jed. “Looks like you were right with your tip,” he admitted as they headed into the kitchen. Jed was still holding his hand but Ben made no move to let go, in fact he didn’t want to. Eventually Jed seemed to realise what he had done and Ben shook his head as the guy apologised. “You have nothing to apologise to me for Jed,” Ben assured him. He liked the guy and he was starting to think that perhaps Jed liked him too. Taking the tray from Jed, it wasn’t long before they both had trays filled with food and Ben looked around them, doing his best to ignore the odd looks he was getting from some of the students. “Would it be okay if we ate outside?” he asked, knowing that it had to be better than having so many faces he didn’t know staring at him. “What? Oh. Oh, you don’t know about that yet. It’s okay, I’ll catch you up on the shows.” Jed said with a chuckle falling from his lips shortly after, unable to hide his amusement. He released a soft ‘oh’ as he listened to Ben. Forbidden? “Man, angels are so weird.” Jed said with a small frown tugging at his features before he shook his head. They seemed to be just as dysfunctional as humans are.
Jed felt a smile tug at his lips at Ben’s words when he told him he wouldn’t put it past him to follow through with his plan to deck Ben’s father right in the face if he ever laid his eyes on the man. Though his smile faltered slightly as he continued listening to Ben before he shook his head, his lips pressing into a thin line at first before he spoke up again. “You won’t have to worry about that with me. I don’t care about the angels. They can turn me into a lizard for all I care. I’m still gonna convince Dr. Saltzman to let you stay with us.” Jed’s shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. “Okay, deal.” Jed said with a beaming grin resting on his lips still. Jed delivered the news to Ben almost right away because he wanted the other to know that he was now a part of the school. His reaction was definitely a good one. “I’m really glad you came to Mystic Falls.”
Jed chuckled at Ben’s words before he nodded his head a few times. He started showing Ben around as they reached the study hall and once he realized that they were getting close to lunchtime, he asked Ben if he was hungry once he received a response from Ben, he began guiding them to the back left doors and once the bell rang and the kitchen doors opened, it was pretty easy from there for them to enter the kitchen. “Right? Saves so much time.” Jed said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips, still unaware of the fact that he was holding onto Ben’s hand and once he came to that conclusion he released Ben’s hand from his own, unable to deny the fact that he’d liked it. His eyes moved up to look at Ben when he told him that he had nothing to apologize for and at that particular moment, he desperately wanted to reach out again to take Ben’s hand in his own again, but he held back.
“Oh, yeah. Sure.” Jed held the tray in his hand and looked around them for a moment, only for him to realize that a lot of people were looking at Ben. Oh. Was that why he asked if it would be okay to eat outside? Jed didn’t linger and instead began leading Ben outside of the school. “I have the perfect place,” Jed revealed with a smile resting on his lips.
“It’s called the Old Mill. Well, it’s actually the only mill. I don’t know why we call it that, to be honest.” Jed said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips not long after. He ignored the fact that most students went to the old mill to make out with each other in privacy. They were just heading there to eat, that’s all. “Should be just us in there, too,” Jed added a moment later with a gentle smile tugging at the corner of his lips. When they reached the mill, Jed looked over at Ben with a half-smile resting on his lips. “What do you think so far?” Jed asked as he began making his way over to one of the empty couches to take a seat, the tray propped on his lap. “It’s one of my favorite places, actually,” Jed added a moment later, his smile still present on his lips.

“I don’t tend to stay in one place for too long so I’m not up to date with what people do these days,” Ben admitted. It was easier to keep moving most of the time since then it was more difficult for the monsters to find him. It also meant that people wouldn’t pay too much attention to him and for a while he hadn’t really minded that but the truth was that he had grown tired of that life. He was tired of moving around all the time and not really forming lasting connections with people, there were a couple of people that had stayed in his life but they were all gone now and he knew that that was the way it was always going to be but there were other species that were immortal too and Ben hoped that he might just befriend some people in Mystic Falls who would live a long time like him. He knew that Jed was mortal so he wouldn’t be among them but he still found himself wanting to spend time with the guy anyway. “You got that right, I try and keep out of their way,” he nodded. He wasn’t sure how the other angels felt about him but he knew how his father felt and considering that had resulted in him getting cursed he wasn’t sure that he wanted to meet any of the others. “I wouldn’t let them do that, they’d have to get through me first,” Ben said, no hesitation in his voice as he spoke. He refused to let anything bad happen to Jed, he had been nothing but kind to him and that was something that Ben really appreciated. He had given up fighting to protect himself a long time ago but when it came to someone he cared about, when it came to Jed, he knew that he would fight with everything that he had in order to protect him. He knew that he wasn’t going to let Jed get hurt at all, let alone because of him. He also didn’t want Jed to fall behind in his school work so he was glad when Jed agreed to tell him if he found that happening. Ben knew that staying at the school was risky, every fibre of his being was telling him that it was a bad idea and that he would only be putting people in danger, but he wanted so badly to believe Jed when he said that the people there could help him so he knew that he had to give them chance. “I’m glad I did too,” he admitted as Jed said he was glad he came to Mystic Falls. Ben had wanted to find somewhere he could start over and actually build a life for himself and he hoped that he just might have found that. Truth be told Ben was more focused on Jed than he was their surroundings but he did his best to listen and take everything in. One thing that never changed was the fact that coming back to life always left him feeling really hungry and that was the case this time as well so he was glad when they headed in the direction of the kitchen. “I imagine the other students might not like it so much but it looks like it will come in handy,” he admitted, resisting the urge to lace their fingers together as his gaze drifted down to their joined hands once more. The last thing he wanted was to end up freaking the guy out so he knew to take things at Jed’s speed. Once they had their food Ben couldn’t wait to get out of the way so that the other students could stop staring at him. He wasn’t sure whether it was because his was a new face they hadn’t seen before or whether they knew who he was or the state he had been in when he was brought to the school but either way he had no desire to continue being stared at so he was glad that Jed seemed happy with his suggestion of heading outside. “Great,” he nodded before following Jed out of the school. It didn’t take them long to reach their destination and when they did Ben found himself looking around as he took it all in. “This is perfect,” he admitted, glad that Jed was right and that it was just the two of them out there. He knew that he was going to have to get used to being around the other students at some point but the truth was that he had spent so much time on his own that he knew he was going to have to take it one step at a time. “I can see why you like it out here, it’s peaceful,” Ben said, a smile touching his lips as he moved so that he was sitting opposite Jed to give the guy some space in case he needed it. “The school seems great so far but it’ll take some time being around so many people,” he admitted as he lifted his drink to his lips and took a sip. “The way they were looking at me, do they know just my being here is putting them in danger?” he asked, unable to stop himself as he looked over at Jed. He wasn’t sure how it worked at the school or whether Jed had talked to anyone else on his way to see Dr Saltzman but he wasn’t used to so many people looking at him like that. JED SALTZMAN

If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
Jed nodded his head in an understanding manner as his lips stretched to form a soft smile. "Don't worry, I'll get you caught up in no time." Jed added a moment later in a reassuring voice. He wasn't going to leave Ben out of the loop for long. Jed honestly didn't blame Ben for trying to steer clear of the angels. What Ben told him pretty much ruined the picture he had of angels in his head, but you know what? Knowing the reality of the situation was definitely better than living a lie and praying to things that purposefully ignore the prayers of some people who desperately need their help. How could they allow something like that? Jed's brows quirked up in a surprised manner when Ben told him that the angels would have to go through Ben first before turning him into anything. Though Jed's surprise soon melted into a softened expression as his lips stretched to form a smile. Jed really was glad that Ben had been placed in their path. He had no doubt that Ben will blend in well with everyone here. He hoped that he'll find a new home too.
Jed's lips stretched to form a grin at Ben's words before he shrugged his shoulders, his hand feeling warm all of a sudden. It wasn't long before he realized just why it did. He was actually holding onto Ben's hand. The realization didn't gross him out. If anything, it made warmth spread all over his body, leaving him feeling like he was running a fever or something.
Jed's lips stretched into a grin when Ben told him that it was perfect. He was glad that Ben felt that way about the Old Mill. It really was such a great place. "Wait until you see the back. There's a bonfire there that we light at nighttime." There were also decorations and chairs at the back. It was such a pretty sight at night. He enjoyed it a lot. "It's okay, you can take it slow." Jed assured him with a quick nod of his head following as he watched Ben move to sit opposite of him which helped calm down his heart. "You don't have to start classes right away, too. I'm sure Dr. Saltzman will give you all the time you need to get adjusted to your surroundings first." Jed added a moment later before he took a bite from his food before lowering his fork down. Jed frowned thoughtfully at that before he eventually shook his head. "No, I don't think so." Jed answered before he wiped the edge of his lips. "Actually, I don't think they're looking at you because of that. There's no way they'd know about it. I only told Dr. Saltzman." Jed shook his head before he felt a small smile tug at the corner of his lips.
"Knowing them, they were probably looking at you because you're hot." The compliment fell from his lips all too easily. "They kinda do that." Jed added a moment later with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after. He seemed to remember something abruptly as he placed the tray of food beside him on the couch and then pushed himself up. "Gimme a sec." Jed disappeared for a moment then came back with two beer cans in his hands. "I brought gifts." Jed said with a grin locked on his lips as he handed Ben the beer. It was chilled, too. Jed kept the other beer can in his hand and made his way back to where he was sitting before and went back to eating until he was eventually full. By the time he was done with his meal, nighttime was beginning to set, and almost automatically the decorative light bulbs that came in different lights all turned on. "C'mon, gotta show you the bonfire. It's beautiful." Like you. Oh god, shut up.
Jed stood up from his seat, the unopened beer still in his hand as he began heading to the back of the Old Mill where the bonfire was located. There were seats all around too, for when they'd have those nights around the bonfire. Good times. Jed reached for the lighter and worked on lighting the bonfire up and once the flames roared to life, Jed leaned back to look at his handy work before he looked at Ben. "What do you think?"

“In that case I’m looking forward to it,” Ben said, an easy smile forming on his face as he looked over at Jed. He wasn’t used to kindness like this, it had been such a long time since someone had helped him because they had genuinely wanted to rather than because he could give them something in return, and there was something so sincere about Jed. It was something that he hadn’t expected at first when he had opened his eyes to find Jed sitting beside him but he couldn’t deny that he liked it, he liked Jed. Ben knew that it was crazy considering that they had only just met but it was something that he couldn’t deny no matter how hard he tried. He had been with others since Ashur died but those were only one night stands, he had never let it be anything more than that. Jed knew the truth about who he was and what he had done and yet he still wanted to help him, though, so Ben already knew that the guy was different. Jed could have easily turned his back on him after he had learned the truth and Ben really wouldn’t have blamed him if he had done just like he hadn’t blamed the others who had done so before Jed but he seemed to take everything in his stride and Ben couldn’t deny that that meant the world to him. He had felt like he was being drawn to Mystic Falls and now for the first time he was starting to feel like he might have finally found somewhere he could build a life for himself regardless of whether or not he was able to break the curse. That was still what he wanted to do, of course, but even if he couldn’t then a part of him was already trying to think of a way that he could make staying in Mystic Falls work that wouldn’t result in those around him getting hurt. He knew that they could have stayed with all of the others but the way they were looking at him Ben had wanted nothing more than to get away. He knew that he was going to have to get used to it considering that he was a student there now too but it was a lot to take in on the first day after he had already been killed and resurrected and now with what he was feeling towards Jed so he couldn’t deny that it was a relief to get away from all of the people who were staring at him for a while. “Do you think we could stay out here until then?” Ben asked. He felt a little bad about pulling Jed away from his classes for the day but the truth was that there were a few things that he needed to get his head around right now and he couldn’t deny that he felt better knowing that there was someone there who knew him and could perhaps help him make sense of some of it. “That will probably just make me stand out even more, it might be better if I try and get into it sooner rather than later,” he admitted thoughtfully. Just the thought of being surrounded by so many people again was daunting considering that Ben was so used to being on his own but it was something that he knew that he was going to have to get used to as was going to class. “Besides, I can’t expect you to miss too many classes because you’re looking out for me,” he added. He knew that he couldn’t let Jed fall behind so he knew that he would find a way to make it work. Ben would be lying if he said that having the others staring at him like that hadn’t made him feel uneasy and he nodded slowly as Jed said that the only person he’d told was Dr Saltzman. “I wonder what it was then because they definitely kept looking at me,” he said before feeling his cheeks flush red at Jed’s next words. “You think I’m hot?” he asked, unable to deny that he was flattered by those words regardless of whether Jed had meant them that way or not. “I guess you would know all about that, you’re hot yourself,” he added. It wasn’t a word that he was very familiar with using but he had picked up enough while he was moving around to know what it meant and he knew that it definitely applied to Jed. The guy was really handsome and that was something that Ben knew better than to try and ignore. Ben’s expression turned to one of confusion once more as Jed said to give him a sec but it wasn’t long before he returned with two beer cans and Ben took one from him. “Thanks,” he said, offering Jed a smile as he looked up at him. “You know, despite how it started today is actually turning out to be pretty decent,” he admitted, setting the can down beside him for a moment as he took another bite of his meal. By the time he had finished he was full and the can of beer was part gone. Night had fallen by that point and Ben knew that they must have been out there longer than he had realised although he would be the first to admit that time had lost all real meaning to him a long time ago. “I can’t wait,” he nodded, resisting the urge to say that Jed was beautiful as he got to his feet and followed him outside. All he could do was watch as Jed started the bonfire and Ben took a seat, relaxing into it as he took a sip of his beer and watched intently as Jed worked. “You’re right, it is beautiful,” he admitted although his gaze was fixed on Jed rather than the bonfire as those words escaped his lips. Clearing his throat, Ben turned his attention to the bonfire and felt a smile tug at his lips as he took another sip of his drink. “Is it always this quiet out here?”JED SALTZMAN

If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
Jed's nodded his head almost right away when Ben asked him if they could stay out here. “Of course.” Jed wasn’t too worried about his classes at the moment, he was doing pretty good at studying on his own so far, anyway. “I’m sure Dr. Saltzman will cover for me.” His shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. His attention drifted to Ben when he heard his response, he nodded his head a few times in an understanding manner, his lips stretching to form a smile. “Okay. I’ll make sure to tell Dr. Saltzman that, then.” Jed said with the same smile resting on his lips. He let out a brief chuckle when Ben said that he can’t expect him to miss too many classes. “It’s honestly not that big of a deal for me.” He assured Ben with the same smile still on his lips.
Jed easily revealed to Ben that the reason everyone was staring at him was that he was hot. He didn’t seem to realize what he’d just said until Ben repeated his words and only then did Jed freeze. Oh god. Jed gulped harshly past the lump in his throat as his heart jumped in his chest, beating as erratically as ever. Jed’s eyes lifted to meet Ben’s, looking like he was about to beg the ground to open up and swallow him whole. He really should have paid more attention to what was flowing out of his mouth. Jed relaxed visibly when he didn’t spot a hint of disgust in Ben’s expression and when Ben complimented him too, Jed let out a nervous chuckle, unable to hide the fact that he was blushing all over again. Jed stared at Ben for a moment or so, unable to help the way his heart fluttered at the sight of the red color in Ben’s cheeks. He looked so cute.
“I’m glad you think so.” Jed said with a grin resting on his lips when Ben told him that today was turning out to be pretty decent, despite the rocky start. He was pretty happy to hear that he was making the day a little more bearable for Ben. “From here on out, hopefully, your days with us will continue being pretty decent.” Jed added a moment later with a pleased smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He began leading Ben to the back where the bonfire was located and once it was lit up, Jed stepped back to admire his handiwork. He felt a grin form on his lips when he heard Ben agree that the bonfire looked pretty. Though there was a voice telling him that Ben was prettier than the bonfire but he couldn’t admit that, definitely not out loud. Jed glanced over at Ben, catching him looking away from Jed which made his heart skip a beat. Oh god. He felt like he was barely going to survive the night.
“Oh, not always. We usually throw parties out here and sometimes, we gather around and talk about pretty much anything. It all depends on whether he was a lot of classes that day or not.” Jed revealed as he lifted his drink up to his lips to take a quick sip from it. “But on nights like these, it’s pretty quiet,” Jed added a moment later with a half-smile still resting on his lips. “Just you and me,” Jed said as he moved to an empty seat not too far away from the bonfire and sat comfortably, his half-empty beer still clutched in his hands. “How are you holding up, though? Still not finished healing? I can take you later to the showers once you’re done, by the way. I know I kinda gave you the clothes first, but I didn’t want you walking around with blood all over you, definitely would have amped up all the staring. You can have some of my clothes if you want. I have some left behind here for my full moon and stuff. Should fit you fine, I guess. It might be tight on your arms, though.” God, he looked like he had big muscular arms. Jed was malfunctioning just a little bit thinking about it.

Ben knew that he should probably try just throwing himself into life at the school straight away but the truth was that coming back to life after a monster attack always left him feeling a little disoriented even after all this time so he knew that he wanted to take it easy for a little while if he could. His body was healing and he knew that it wouldn’t be long before he was back to full strength but it wasn’t just a physical toll it took on him, it was a mental one too. He had never met his father but the angel seemed determined to torture him for the rest of eternity and Ben was doing his best not to let the angel break him. “Great,” he said, a smile touching his lips as Jed confirmed that they could stay out there. As he spoke again, Ben studied him carefully for a moment. “You really think a lot of Dr Saltzman, don’t you?” he asked. It was clear in the way that Jed talked about the man but whether there was a connection there that went beyond the headmaster and student one he wasn’t sure. “You know my story but I don’t know yours.” he added. He wanted to know it, though, but he understood that it might take Jed time to tell him if he ever felt ready so he wasn’t going to press him. “Might as well, what’s the phrase, rip the band aid off sooner rather than later?” he asked, hoping that he had remembered that correctly. Ben was able to pick up certain things from those around him but for the most part he had kept to himself so as not to draw too much attention to himself so he knew that he still had a lot to learn. “Maybe not but it is to me. You’ve already done a lot for me by giving me a place to stay, I’m not going to let you fall behind.”Ben knew that he was flirting and he honestly knew that he shouldn’t be doing it but he just couldn’t help it. There was something about Jed that he felt drawn to and that connection was one that he hadn’t felt with anyone since Ashur had died, in fact this felt stronger even than that. He hadn’t expected Jed to say that he was hot and it was enough to have Ben’s cheeks flushing red but the compliment slipped from his lips so easily in return before he could even stop himself. It wasn’t long before Jed was blushing as well and that was enough to bring a smile to Ben’s lips once more, glad that he seemed to be having just as much of an effect as Jed was having on him. “I think being here they just might,” Ben agreed as Jed said he hoped that his days with them continued being pretty decent. They would if he was able to continue seeing Jed, anyway. Ben couldn’t even remember the last time he had spent a day with someone like this, friends had always been few and far between for him and the truth was that he hadn’t felt any real connection with anyone since he’d fought in the war with Antonio and Ethan. He knew that they would have probably both died a long time ago just like everyone else he’d come to care about had done but that was the way his life always went so Ben knew to make the most of the time he had with people while it lasted. Now that they were outside Ben knew that he really needed to be on his best behaviour because the last thing he wanted was to end up making Jed feel awkward. “I can see why this is a popular spot, I think I’ll probably end up spending a lot of time out here,” he admitted. It seemed like it would be the perfect escape when things got a little too much and that was never going to be a bad thing. As Jed spoke again, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. “That’s how I’m starting to like it,” he admitted as Jed said that it was just the two of them. Mentally he started kicking himself because he knew that he needed to stop saying things like that to Jed otherwise he could quite easily end up scaring him off but that was easier said than done it seemed. The effect that Jed was having on him was something new entirely but whenever he looked over at Jed he didn’t seem offended or disgusted or anything like that, in fact there were times when Ben was pretty sure that he caught Jed looking at him in the same way that he looked at Jed. This was all so new to him, though, and he knew that the last thing he needed was to end up alienating the one friend that he had in Mystic Falls. “I’m getting there. My body has almost finished healing and I should be back to full strength by the morning,” Ben explained even though in his mind it was a different matter entirely. “A shower would be great though and I’ll take what I can get when it comes to clothes if it isn’t too much trouble, thanks. A few monsters found me on my way here so all of my clothes are ruined. I’ll have to get some more,” he added. That was another problem that he always seemed to face and he hated it. JED SALTZMAN

If to change is what you need You can change right next to me
Jed’s attention drifted back to Ben when he heard his question which made a smile form on his lips almost immediately. “Yeah, I do. He’s been there for me through most of my childhood and up until this very moment.” Jed didn’t even know where he’d be without Dr. Saltzman’s help. His attention drifted to Ben when he mentioned that Jed knew his story while Ben didn’t know about his. “Oh, my story really isn’t that exciting.” It was still not easy for Jed to talk about it because most of the time, he pretended that the trauma that came with it was non-existent. It was so much easier than actually facing it head-on, because who would want that, right? There was an amused expression on his face as he listened to Ben before a chuckle fell from his lips. “Wow, look at you. I’m impressed.” Jed saidm unable to hold back the smile from forming on his lips as he kept his eyes fixed solely on Ben, unable to deny the fact that it was so incredibly endearing to hear him say something like that. Jed’s expression softened as he listened to Ben before he nodded his head a few times in an understanding manner. “Okay, then. I won’t get sidetracked from my studies. I promise.” Jed found it incredibly endearing that the other cared so much for his future.
When Ben told him that by being here, his days might just continue being decent, a smile stretched his lips almost immediately. He wanted to make this as seamless as possible for Ben, he wanted him to feel safe with them. Jed was going to try his hardest to continue being there for Ben because he really did care about him.
A smile immediately formed on his lips when Ben told him that he’ll probably end up spending a lot of time out here. He’d definitely love nothing more than to spend time out here with Ben, too. Jed’s lips were about to part to say that out loud but he stopped and chose to make a comment about it being just the two of them out here and Ben’s comeback was enough to make his heart jump into his throat as his eyes moved to settle on Ben, watching him quietly for a few moments before a smile began tugging at the corner of his lips, his heart still beating wildly in his chest. Oh boy.
Jed let out a soft sigh when he managed to steer the conversation away and focus their attention on something else instead as Ben told him that he should be back to his full strength tomorrow. “That’s a relief, then.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following because there’s something about seeing Ben in pain that made Jed feel uneasy. He was going to try everything he possibly could to stop that from happening again. “Okay, deal. I’ll show you where the showers are and I’ll leave out a new change of clothes for you.” Jed promised with a half-smile resting on his lips following. “We can also go shopping for clothes later, too. No worries about that.” Jed added a moment later with a quick nod of his head following, his smile still present on his lips before he lifted his beer to his lips to take a quick sip before lowering his hand down. His attention moved to Ben, watching him quietly for a few moments, unsure why he couldn’t bring himself to look away from Ben. He was so handsome that it made Jed’s heart flutter. Jed gulped past the lump in his throat and turned his attention away from Ben, unable to determine what that weird fluttering was.

“I’m glad you’ve had him, it sounds like he’s done a lot for you,” Ben admitted. He admired Jed in that respect as even though he didn’t know about Jed’s past it was clear that he had someone in his life who cared about him now. Ben had never had a dad while he was growing up, the closest he’d had was Ashur’s dad but that had never been the same. As far as he was concerned the last of his family had died the same day that Ashur had but Mystic Falls was already starting to feel like it was a fresh start and he hoped that in time he would find his place there the same way that Jed seemingly had done. “I’m sure that’s not true,” he said gently as Jed said that his story wasn’t that exciting. Ben knew next to nothing about the guy but he had given Jed his word that he was going to stay in town and that was something that Ben intended on sticking to so he hoped that over time he would get to learn everything. Right now he knew that he wasn’t going to push Jed into telling him if he wasn’t ready, though, Ben had all the time in the world and he was happy to let Jed take things at his own speed. Ben had already opened up to him about so much but he’d needed to so Jed could decide whether or not he wanted him to stick around so the truth was that he didn’t regret it. Jed’s next words were enough to make Ben laugh. “What can I say, I’ve picked up a few things,” he chuckled. There was a lot that he had to learn about the way things were now since he hadn’t paid too much attention to it but there were certain things that had stuck with him. He knew that delaying starting classes wouldn’t do him any good, it would just make the other students stare at him or gossip about him that much more and that was something that he wasn’t interested in. “I’m going to hold you to that,” he said, offering Jed a smile as he looked over at him. There was something about being around Jed that put him so at ease and that was something that Ben hadn’t had for a long time. Ben knew that he really needed to engage his brain before speaking because the last thing he wanted to do was to end up scaring Jed off. The truth was that Ben’s interactions with people were few and far between for the most part and even though he’d had a few one night stands along the way there really hadn’t been much talking involved. He was out of practice when it came to being around people he actually liked but Jed already fell into that category and Ben wanted to keep him there so he knew that he needed to be careful. Ben wasn’t ashamed of who he was and he never tried to hide the fact that he liked men but even though there were times when it looked like he was having just as much of an effect on Jed as Jed was having on him he knew that he’d had much longer to come to terms with who he was so he knew that he needed to let Jed figure things out at his own speed. The smile on Jed’s face as Ben said that he was starting to like it just the two of them didn’t go unnoticed, though, and Ben couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his own face as he took a sip of his beer. “I guess that’s one of the good things about this, it never takes me too long to recover,” he offered. Whether that was a part of the curse or whether it was down to him being a nephilim he had no idea but it had been that way for as long as he could remember. “Thank you. You’ve been so kind,” he said sincerely. Jed had gone out of his way to help him when he hadn’t been under any kind of an obligation to at all and he really was grateful to him for that. “Are you sure? You’ve done so much already,” he added gently. The last thing he wanted was to end up having Jed regret helping him so he knew that he could figure things out on his own if he needed to. JED SALTZMAN
