Maggie knew that it was going to take some time to get her head around the fact that Jacob was actually here. She had dreamt about seeing him again for such a long time but the truth was that she had thought that it was never going to happen. Maggie would be the first to admit that she had never been very good at letting people get too close to her but Jacob had managed to get under her skin. He was the one guy she had been able to tolerate being around all those years ago and before she had even realised what was going on she had fallen for him. She hadn’t seen it coming at all and she wouldn’t have wanted to stop it even if she had known. The love she had felt for him back then, the love she still felt for him now, was so strong and there was a part of her that wanted nothing more than to give things another go between them but she wasn’t sure if that was what Jacob wanted so for now at least she knew that she needed to try and be patient. “I’m glad you decided to stay here, we might not have found each other if you hadn’t,” Maggie admitted. She wasn’t used to feeling vulnerable or wearing her heart on her sleeve but Jacob was the only guy she had ever loved so seeing him again was a shock to say the least. “Knowing you’re here gives Jake and I a reason to want to stay here too.” She had originally suggested they head to Mystic Falls because she had known that there were members of the Salvatore family still in the town and she had wanted Jake to be able to get to know that side of his family even if he couldn’t tell them who he actually was to them. Now they had more of a reason than ever to stay and she couldn’t wait for their son to arrive in town so he could meet his father at last. As Jacob said he was wondering how he got so lucky to see her again, Maggie studied him carefully for a moment. She got the impression that there was something that he wasn’t telling her but she hoped that he would in time. They had always been able to tell each other everything in the past and she didn’t want that to change now. There was a part of her that was tempted to ask but she knew that she didn’t want to pry so instead she nodded as a smile touched her lips. “I didn’t think I’d ever get to see you again either,” she said gently. Maggie was a little surprised at how eager Jacob seemed for her to meet her dad but she couldn’t ignore the way that it was enough to make her heart start to flutter in her chest. No one else had ever made her feel that way that Jacob could and she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t missed it. “I can’t wait. I hope he likes me,” she admitted. She wasn’t sure why it was so important to her bearing in mind that she and Jacob weren’t together but that didn’t mean that she didn’t want to be and she knew that the last thing she wanted was to end up making a bad impression on Jacob’s dad. “Another guy just like you? However will I cope?” she teased, unable to resist as she looked over at Jacob. Truth be told the fact that they were so alike was enough to intrigue Maggie and she didn’t doubt that she would see it when she met Jacob’s dad just like he’d said. Walking next to Jacob now felt so natural to Maggie and she knew that she would never get tired of that feeling. There was a time when she had taken it for granted but she knew that she wouldn’t be doing that again. As Jacob asked if Jake’s family knew what had happened to him, Maggie shook her head. “A friend of mine stayed behind to look out for them when we moved on but as far as I know they died years ago. I don’t think they ever learned the truth about what had happened to Jake, we told them he died from sickness. We didn’t think it was safe for them to know,” she explained, unable to stop herself wondering in that moment if that was how Jacob had felt back then when he’d left. It seemed strange going from that to talking about what she had been up to during the time after Jacob had left but it was clear that he genuinely wanted to know and she could understand that because the truth was that she wanted to know about what he had been up to as well. As they walked their hands brushed against each other and Maggie wanted nothing more than to hold his hand and forget that the time they’d spent apart had ever happened but she knew that she couldn’t do that. She didn’t know if Jacob still felt the same way about her as he did back then and she knew that they probably couldn’t just pick up where they’d left off either. So much time had passed since then but underneath it all it felt like they were still the same people so she knew that she could still hope. As it was she turned her hand slightly and linked her little finger with Jacob’s before shifting her hand closer, wanting to test the waters to see how he would react. As Jacob explained what he’d been up to before saying he was thinking about taking up a teaching position at the local college, Maggie found herself nodding. “I know you’d be great at it if you did decide to teach, you were always so patient and kind,” she admitted. “Do you know what you’d like to teach?”JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
JACOB was still shell-shocked at the fact that Maggie was alive, but not even that, but that he also had a son who had a family of his own. It was surreal. His bloodline had continued when he thought it would have died with him many years ago when he had become a vampire. All those hopes and dreams of becoming a father, or having a family, had died the same day his human life had. But that hadn’t been the case after all. He had become a father, he did have a family of his own, something he had always wanted. But the kicker? He hadn’t gotten to experience having his son, or watching him grow up. He’d missed all of that because he had left Maggie all alone, for her own protection. Jacob didn’t trust himself when he’d first turned, and within good reason given his track record with blood. It was too risky for him to stick around and be there for Maggie. Her safety was his main priority, above all else.
Even to this day, Maggie was his priority. Even though so much time had passed, he never forgot about Maggie. His love for her never wavered. He wasn’t sure where she stood in terms of getting back together, or if that was something she would ever want again. Honestly he wasn’t even sure if Maggie was the same Maggie he knew back then, if she were still the woman he fell in love with. Standing there before her now, he had a good feeling that she was. Apart from her wardrobe, she seemed to be the same. The world hadn’t corrupted her, hadn’t stripped her from all the parts that made her Maggie. At least, that’s what he could tell thus far.
And he hoped he wasn’t wrong.
‘I’m glad you decided to stay here, we might not have found each other if you hadn’t,’ Maggie said and Jacob could help but smile at her comment. “It seems fate is on our side.” He was so glad that he and Lucy had found their father and not only that, but had decided to stay in Mystic Falls. This was their home and his heart broke when he had to leave it all those years ago, but now that Maggie and potentially his son were moving into town, he for sure wasn’t going anywhere. ‘I didn’t think I’d ever get to see you again either,’ she said to him gently, and he nodded solemnly. “I didn’t think I would ever get this chance. I’d thought I’d lost you for good.” He said, his voice slightly faltering as he spoke. The day he left was the worst day of his life, he thought about that day every single day. There wasn’t one singular moment that he didn’t think of Maggie and what could’ve been.
Of course he wanted her to meet his dad, he’d always wanted that. Now that he found them both, he couldn’t wait for her to meet him. For the two of them to meet. He’d told his dad all about Maggie, but he’d never thought he would be able to actually see them meet in person. Finally that day would come. ‘I can’t wait. I hope he likes me,’ Jacob chuckled and he nudged her slightly, “He’ll love you.” Just as he had and still did. He had no doubt about it that his dad would love her the moment he met her. No doubt whatsoever.
‘Another guy just like you? However will I cope?’ Maggie teased and he let out an actual belly laugh. “I think you’ll cope just fine.” He said back in a teasing manner. The two walked side by side and he couldn’t help but notice how natural it felt, how it felt like it had years ago when they took their walks together. A few moments passed before Maggie began to talk, this time more solemnly as she spoke of their son’s family. A frown encompassed his features at the story she had just told him. It was one all too familiar to his own. When he had left Maggie. “I hate what happened to our son and his family. I, unfortunately, know that feeling all too well…” Way too well in fact. This conversation was one he wasn’t necessarily ready for, not when he had just reunited with Maggie, so when she changed the subject he was thankfully for it.
Nevertheless, Jacob was genuinely curious as to what she and their son had been up to all these years. As the two strolled through the park, Jacob couldn’t help but hyperfocus on the fact that their hands brushed against one another’s, and he wanted nothing more than to just grab her hand in his and never let go. But he didn’t know if that was appropriate or not, even given their past. So much time had passed that Jacob honestly wasn’t sure if things could go back to the way things were between them. He had changed so much since then and if he were being honest, had done some incredibly dark things that he couldn’t necessarily control due to his bloodlust that he had found out later on, was hereditary.
Jacob felt Maggie turn her hand slightly, linking her pinky figure with his own in almost a hesitated motion, almost as if she were testing the water, to see how he would react. Without uttering a word, Jacob linked his finger around her own, squeezing in a reassuring manner. The two continued on walking and he explained to Maggie how he’d probably end up teaching in some fashion and he watched her nod in agreement. ‘I know you’d be great at it if you did decide to teach, you were always so patient and kind. Do you know what you’d like to teach?’ Jacob smiled warmly as he glanced at her briefly before looking back ahead, shrugging his shoulders ever so slightly. “I’m not sure. I thought about English or perhaps some kind of a Psychology course. I hadn’t thought too much about it.” He’d been too busy otherwise. “What about you though? You mentioned how you got a job here as a social worker. Do you have a specialty in that field? Something or someone you would like to focus on?” He questioned, wanting to know everything and anything that had gone on in her life. No detail was too small. He wanted to know them all.
Every last one of them.

Seeing Jacob again still felt so surreal to Maggie. She had mourned him so many years ago but she had never stopped loving him. Jake had tried to get her to move on but she hadn’t felt that she could ever do that, not when she had loved as deeply as she had done. Jacob was the one man who had managed to break down her defences after so many others had failed and she had loved him for it. He had treated her like she was a person rather than just a possession like all those other men had and he hadn’t been afraid to let her be herself. He had known how stubborn and opinionated she was and he had still wanted to be with her anyway. Maggie knew that perhaps in time she could have found someone else who would accept her the way that he had done but the truth was that she hadn’t wanted to. She wasn’t sure how she was supposed to find someone else when she had already had and lost someone who was perfect for her so instead she had resigned herself to the fact that she would remain alone. Seeing him again now was enough to remind her of just how much she had loved him then and still did now. There was so much that he didn’t know and she had no idea how it was going to work out when he and Jake met but Maggie hoped that they would both want to be a part of each other’s lives. “It seems so,” Maggie nodded as Jacob said that it seemed fate was on their side. She had never expected this when she and Jake decided to head to Mystic Falls but now she was even more certain that they had made the right choice. Jake hadn’t followed her to town yet but she knew that it was just a matter of time and she couldn’t wait. “I thought the same,” she admitted, bringing her hand up and letting it rest against his cheek to remind herself that this was real, that he really was standing before her now. “Promise me you won’t leave me behind like that again? I don’t think I could take it,” she breathed. She knew that she was being selfish, they hadn’t been together for years and she was asking Jacob to make that promise but no matter what happened between them she knew that she didn’t want to lose him like that a second time. Jacob had already said that he wanted her to meet his dad and that in itself seemed like a big step but she tried not to read too much into it. She was still the woman Jacob had married all those years ago and she was the mother of his child so she knew that that could be the only reason but she still wanted his dad to like her. “You think so?” she asked, a smile touching her lips as Jacob said that his dad was going to love her. She knew that she didn’t always get along with people but for Jacob she knew that she wanted to make an effort and she couldn’t deny that she was curious about meeting his dad. “You’re right about that, I’ve always been one of the few people who could put up with you,” Maggie teased. Truth be told it was actually the other way around, Jacob was the one to put up with her if anything and that was the way that it had always been. Explaining what their son had been through wasn’t easy, not when it was so similar to what Jacob had been through, and her heart ached for him. “I know you do,” she said gently, quickly blinking away the tears that formed in her eyes. “I’ve seen how difficult it was for Jake to leave his family behind so I’m so sorry you had to do the same with us.” How he’d had the strength to do that she had no idea but she knew that it couldn’t have been easy at all even though Jacob hadn’t known she was pregnant at the time. Truth be told she hadn’t found out herself until after he was gone. One thing Maggie hated right now was not knowing what was going to happen with Jacob. She had linked her finger with his to try and quell the urge to take his hand and never let go. She hadn’t known how Jacob would react but soon he was linking his finger with hers and giving it a squeeze and she felt a smile touch her lips as they walked. She knew that they had both been through so much but the Jacob she was with now was still her Jacob and that knowledge was enough to make her heart ache a little less. “Whichever subject you choose I know you’ll do great. There are two colleges around here you could teach at, aren’t there? Whitmore and the Salvatore College?” she asked, knowing that the latter had to be connected to his family in some way – it was too big a coincidence for it not to. As he asked about her specialty, her smile returned. “I like working with children so I’m working with the group home and the adoption agency to try and help the kids in town find safe homes and families to call their own.”JACOB SALVATORE
