━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
JACOB Salvatore was a lot of things throughout the course of his life; brother, son, and husband. All had been high points in his life, getting to experience love in all aspects. It was truly a blessing and one he never took for granted. While still he was a son and a brother, the one thing he did not get as long to be, was husband. His life with Margaret Avery was taken from him all too quickly. They had not been married long before he was killed and then later on turned into a vampire, forcing him to leave town with his sister. He just could not risk being seen by the ton's people. As with the rumors of his death circulating throughout their town, he and Lucy knew that they would have to leave as it wouldn’t be safe for them to continue to live in the town, for anyone they cared for.
That special person he had to leave behind wrecked him to his very core as it would do to any one who had to leave behind the woman in which they had fallen in love with. Margaret Avery who was something special and the absolute light in his life. She was everything he could have ever wanted in a woman both emotionally and physically. Maggie was his soulmate and always would be, that would never change even in death. However, unknowingly to him, Maggie become pregnant with his child, carrying on his bloodline. It pained him immensely to have to leave his beloved, but he knew it was in her best interest if he just disappeared forever, not wanting to risk harming her due to his newly found status as a vampire. As much as he hated having to leave, he knew in his heart that was what was best for her, no matter how much it hurt to do so.
If someone really loves you, they'll do the right thing... for you.
And so in that moment, because of his deep love for his wife, leaving her was the right thing to do for her. After that night, he had never seen her again, although he carried a picture of her in his pocket wherever he went, always having her at his side. To this day he still missed Maggie deeply, thinking of her every day. In his eyes, she was the only person for him, never loving another to this day. Lucy always told him she would want him to be happy, to find another. But Jacob just couldn't bare it, not when he only had eyes for Maggie and Maggie only. Sure life got lonely at time, but he had his sister and memories of Maggie, so that was really all he needed. It was not ideal of course, but when you loved someone as much as he loved Margaret Avery, it became ideal.
Shoving his hands deep inside his coat pockets, Jacob roamed through town square. Ever since arriving to Mystic Falls a couple years ago, he had a lot on his mind. By finding his father it was like his life was without meaning. Ever since he and Lucy had begun the journey of searching for their father, that had been the only thing on his mind, the only thing he cared about. His afterlife revolved around finding his father and that was it. The two of them had one goal in mind after he had been turned and that was the case for decades, but finally, after what seemed like forever, they'd found him. Ironically enough in the very town they had been born and grew up in. Releasing a sigh, Jacob admired the brisk walk he was on as an attempt to clear his mind; however, as he neared the center of town square his eyes landed on one face he never thought he would see again. His breath stopped short in that moment, stunned at who he saw standing only aa few feet from him. Could it actually be her?
"Maggie?" He exclaimed, his voice no more than a whisper.

Mystic Falls. It was a place that Maggie had heard of a long time ago but the truth was that even the thought of going there was too painful until now. It had been over a hundred years since Jacob had died and Jake had tried talking to her about moving on, as had a couple of her friends along the way, but Maggie knew that she didn’t want to do that. She had met a lot of different men while her husband had been trying to get her to find a husband and Jacob had stood out by a mile. She hadn’t really liked him at first considering that he had thought that she’d needed saving when she was actually more than capable of looking out for herself but in the end she had realised that he had good intentions. It had taken her a while to warm up to him but eventually she had fallen for him and she knew that no other love would even come close to comparing. She had already had the best and even though it was short lived she knew that she wasn’t interested in trying to find someone else. That worked for others but whenever she even thought about being with someone it was always Jacob who came to mind so she knew that it was just one of those things. She had still encouraged Jake to move on after he had to leave his wife and children behind, though, as more than anything she wanted her son to be happy and she knew that she would never judge him for moving on just because she didn’t want to do the same thing herself. Deciding to head to Mystic Falls had ended up being a big decision but she had finally felt ready to make it and so had Jake. She knew that he had questions about his father’s side of the family and given that Mystic Falls was where Jacob was from, she was certain that it was there they would get answers. She had learned that there were still members of the Salvatore family in town and even though she didn’t know anything more about them than that, she hoped that Jake might at least be able to find some connection to his family in the town. They had looked up a few of the different members of her family over the years so she still felt connected to them in that way but she never had found out what had happened to Lucy after she had left Tennessee so she couldn’t deny that she was curious as well. Being a social worker meant that she could work wherever she liked and as it happened there was an opening in Mystic Falls. She had ended up going on ahead while Jake tied up a few loose ends but she knew that he would join her later when he was ready. Until then she wanted to get the house up together and get to know the town a little so she was grateful that she had a week to do that before she was due to start work. Mystic Falls really was a picturesque little town and as she made her way through the square she couldn’t deny that she was already taking a liking to it. As her gaze came to rest on a familiar face, however, she was certain that her eyes were deceiving her even after he said her name. “It can’t be,” she breathed, hesitating for a moment before taking a couple of steps closer to him, her gaze studying him carefully as she did so. “Jacob? Is that really you?”JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
WAS he dreaming? This can’t be real. She was dead. He knew she was as he could recall quite clearly the painful final whisper of goodbye before he would have to say goodbye to his soulmate forever. He remembered saying goodbye to her more than once as that was the most painful thing he had to do in his entire life, was to say goodbye to her. He had thought that after that last goodbye that he would never see her again. Yet for some reason he can see her now. She’s standing across the town square, her face unreadable yet full of unnerving emotion, like she too had just seen a ghost. Soft, slow tears begin to fall down his cheeks as he couldn't believe what he was seeing, who he was seeing. It was like the day he had met her, in complete and utter awe of her beauty. Still, she looked the same, as beautiful as ever. Her pale skin, dark hair, and her unmistaken multi-colored eyes - they were one of the main features that had initially caught his eye, they were all different colors, the green, blue, and brown complimented one another so well. They complimented her.
Jacob stood there, wiping away the tear that had ran down his cheek as he looked at her as she looked at him, neither one moving an inch in fear that this was all some sort of an illusion and moving even an inch would cause the other to fade. He watched as she tucked a strand of her brunette hair behind her ear, a habit she did quite frequently, almost like a nervous tick of sorts. Jacob half believed that she wasn't real, that this had something to do with his hunger, but then he heard her speak his name and he stopped breathing completely. Her voice soft and like music to his ears, a sound he thought he would never hear ever again. A sound he missed dearly. 'It can't be. Jacob, is that really you?' She asked, her voice no louder than a whisper. At that question, Jacob slowly walks toward her, closing the distance between the two of them.
His fists were clenched, his heart pounding as he approaches her, fear wretches through his body at the notion that this could be all some sort of sick and twisted dream that he had managed to conjure up. Slowly he walked up to her so he was only inches away, it was like it was only the two of them in the entire area, no one else around but the two of them - the electricity coursing through them smothering. With one hand, Jacob raises it slightly to place his palm onto her cheek. Her skin was smoother than he remembered, but it felt so real. So pure. His body was trembling and it was like he was suffocating. All the air had left his lungs as he felt her touch beneath his palm. Her touch felt so real and it was real, she was standing in front of him. This really was happening. "Yes, it's me. It's me Maggie." He replied softly as he then pulled her close to his body, holding onto her body tightly as if she may fade away right under him. Even though he was grateful to have her back, to be able to hold her in his arms again, this still made no sense to him. How was she alive?

Maggie felt certain that her eyes had to be deceiving her, that she must just be imaging Jacob standing before her after all these years. He still looked just the same as she remembered him, handsome in a way that made her heart ache and so full of life and love. It was those thoughts of him that she had held onto all this time and she had told Jake about so often to try and make sure that Jacob lived on in the mind and heart of the son that he had never had the chance to meet. Their life should have been so different to the one they had ended up with but no matter how much she might want to she knew that she couldn’t change anything that had happened in the past. Seeing Jacob again now felt far too good to be true, she had lost both her parents at different stages of her life, her heart had broken in two when she had lost Jacob and she had felt a similar crushing loss when Jake had decided to leave his family to protect them. Nothing ever seemed to go their way so she knew better than to take this at face value and think that for once things might be different. She had learned some about the supernatural world from her friend so she knew that there were species out there that could take the shape of whoever they wanted and in that moment she knew that that was what had to be going on now but then there were tears in his eyes and the way he looked at her was so unmistakably Jacob that it was enough to have her breath catch in her throat and she didn’t even realise that tears were spilling over her own lashes as well. Her head was conflicted but her heart was a different matter entirely. Her heart wanted this to be Jacob so much that it was literally aching in her chest and she brushed her hair behind her ear in nervousness, something that she did absentmindedly so often but the gesture was enough to spark some recognition in the man before her. He closed the distance between them and Maggie did the same, wanting to reach out and touch him to make sure that he was real but not able to bring herself to do so in case it turned out that this really was all in her head after all. Soon Jacob was reaching his hand up to touch her cheek, though, and Maggie leaned into the touch, bringing her own hand up to wipe away the tears that started flowing that much quicker. “I can’t believe it,” she breathed as Jacob said that it was him. Before she could do anything he was pulling her close the way he had so many times before and Maggie wrapped her arms around him in return. She had never liked anyone seeing her as weak but in that moment she couldn’t care less about that. She hated crying but she couldn’t stop the tears from falling no matter how hard she tried. It had been over a hundred years since she had last seen him but in that moment all of that fell away and it was just the two of them holding each other. They stood like that in silence for a few moments before Maggie forced herself to pull back slightly and look up at him. “You look just how I remember. How is this even possible?” she asked. If she was able to think logically right now then she would have been able to put the pieces together but her mind was all over the place so she needed to hear it from him and she hoped that he would tell her the truth. “What happened?”JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
JACOB couldn't believe this. How was this even possible? How was Maggie alive? Had she been turned into a vampire as well? That had to be it because she still looked as beautiful as ever. She looked the exact same as she had back in the 1800s, only now instead of those huge dresses she wore, she was in modern day clothes. This was so surreal, and he almost believed that his eyes were playing tricks on him as surely she couldn't actually be, right in front of him. But it was true, the softness of her skin against his was proof enough. And the wetness of her tears made it even more true. Jacob was so conflicted in that moment, that this was really Maggie in front of him. She stood still as he approached her, not moving a single inch, breath caught her her throat as she stared up at him, eyes wide and full of hope, of admiration. Maybe this was true and the reasoning why didn't matter, because if this were indeed Maggie, nothing else mattered in that moment.
As he had reached up to caress her cheek, Maggie leaned forward into his hand before using her free hand to wipe the tears that had begun to flow heavily form her eyes. 'I can’t believe it,' she said to him, her voice only barely above a whisper. Jacob wiped the tears from her cheek gently before enveloping her into a tight embrace, his arms wrapped around her slender frame. She returned the gesture and wrapped her arms around his own body. Jacob hadn't known this warmth in a long, long time. After laving Maggie he had never taken on another lover, hadn't ever found anyone else that had even come close to Maggie, he didn't want anyone else. All he wanted was her and after leaving all he had was the memories they had once shared along with a photo he had kept on him at all times. That's all he had left to hold onto. Over a hundred years had passed since he had left Maggie and he had only ever had eyes for her.
And only her. It was always Maggie.
Even though it had been over a hundred years the two embraces one another like no time had passed at all and suddenly he was back in the late 1800s in their small cottage by the river, a time where he was in complete and utter bliss. Life had been so simple back then. The two stood like that for a few minutes until Maggie was the first one to pull away, her eyes full on confusion as she looked up at him. 'You look just how I remember. How is this even possible?' He knew that question was coming and he let out a sigh as he reached out and tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. He knew this would be difficult to explain, but she had things she needed to explain as well, such as how she was here too. The two had a lot to catch up on, but unknowingly to Jacob, they had a lot more to catch up on that he realized.
'What happened?' She asked once more and before he even began to explain, Jacob led the two of them over to a nearby bench and sat the two of them down. Jacob grabbed Maggie's hands as he began to explain to her just how he was there, unaged, a hundred years later. "The stories you heard back then about my death? They were true... to an extent. I was turned... into a vampire. I left to protect you, from myself. I wouldn't have been able to bare it if I had hurt you in any way, so as much as it pained me to do so... I left." He explained as a huge weight was lifted off of his shoulders. He had this weighing heavily on him ever since he had left that night a hundred years ago, and now to be able to tell the one person he had kept it from, felt amazing. More than amazing, it felt surreal.
"Maggie, how are you here?" He asked, the answer unnerving to say the least. Jacob didn't know what to expect from her, but whatever it was, it wouldn't change how he viewed her. Over a hundred years had passed and he still loved her all the same.

Things like this never happened, not to Maggie. She was just a child when her mother died and her father had died years later. She was used to losing people she loved, not finding them again, so she was certain that this had to be a trick of some kind but if it was then she had absolutely no idea who was behind it. She always kept what she was a secret from those around her, she’d had the odd friend who was supernatural over the years but it had been a long time since she had last confided in anyone about what she was and she was sure that no one hated her enough to be this cruel. Jacob was her first love, he was her only love so to see him again now was enough to make her heart leap but at the same time it was enough to make her remember just how painful it had been to lose him all those years ago. She hadn’t known that she was pregnant back then but learning that she was carrying their child had given her the strength to pick herself up and get on with her life. She had never found anyone else, she had never wanted to despite Jake’s assurances that it was time for her to move on and that his dad would have wanted her to be happy. Just the thought of being with someone else when her heart still belonged to Jacob had felt wrong so she had never even come close to giving it a try. She wasn’t sure that Jake completely understood why she had decided not to move on and find someone else but she stood by her decision and she was pretty sure that her mind was never going to change. Now Jacob’s arms were wrapped around her the way they had done so many times before and Maggie couldn’t help but lose herself in the embrace. If this was a trick or even if it was a dream then she wasn’t sure that she ever wanted it to end and yet she couldn’t help her need for answers. Jacob looked just as he had done all those years ago, he had always been handsome back then but there was something about seeing him looking so at home in this modern era that was enough to make her heart ache. He looked like her Jacob and he sounded just like him but she knew that it couldn’t be. She hadn’t known what she was a kitsune back then but it seemed like too much of a coincidence that Jacob should end up being supernatural too. A huge part of her wanted to believe that it was true but she wasn’t sure that her heart could take it if it turned out not to be. She had already lost Jacob once and she knew that she didn’t want to go through that again. Maggie’s breath caught in her throat as Jacob reached out and tucked her hair behind her ear. It was something that he had done so many times back then and the way he looked at her was a way no one else ever had either before he came into her life or after. There was so much love there, the same love that she was certain was mirrored in her own eyes, and she started to realise just how much she wanted this to be real not just for her sake but for Jake’s as well. The words to ask about what had happened were out of her mouth before she could stop them and she didn’t offer any resistance as Jacob led her over to a bench and they sat down. He took both her hands in his and Maggie gave his hands a gentle squeeze, an encouragement in her own way for him to go ahead and tell her the truth. They had never lied to each other and she knew that she didn’t want them to start now. “You’re a vampire?” she asked, unable to believe just how similar his story sounded to Jake’s. “I want to hate you for leaving but I can’t, I understand why you did it,” she said, knowing that she understood so much better than Jacob could truly appreciate right now. She wanted to tell him about Jake, she needed to tell him about their son but she knew that they needed to get this part out of the way first. Soon enough he was turning the question back around onto her and her eyes locked on his. “I’m a kitsune,” she said, her eyes searching his for a reaction before she continued. “I didn’t know before you died, my mom was a kitsune but she died when I was young and nothing unusual happened so I was sure I was born human,” she continued. “I still don’t know how it all works but I stopped ageing around the time you died.” She was sure that it must have been around that time, it would definitely make sense since her other abilities had decided to show themselves the day he died, but either way she had remained the same and so had Jacob. “Have you been on your own the whole time?” she asked, not sure if Lucy was the same or whether she had died years ago. ━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
JACOB knew that this conversation wouldn't be easy, that there was so much he had to tell her. So much had happened since that night and he wanted to tell her everything. The two of them never kept secrets from one another and he wasn't going to start now. Maggie was back in his life by some miracle and he wasn't going to let that chance go to waste. Jacob had a missing piece of him back, the person he counted on for everything, his everything. To have her back was truly a heavenly miracle and he wasn't sure how this was possible, but he wasn't going to question it. Maggie was alive and had been in his arms, her hands were inside of his own as the two sat down on the bench in the middle of town square, just as they had once before a hundred years ago. It was like time had stood still in that moment, his eyes locked onto her own, still not believing what he was seeing, what he was feeling. But nevertheless it was everything he could have dreamed of and so much more.
'You’re a vampire?' She questioned in disbelief and he nodded slowly. "Yes I am. I was turned the night I left." He explained, studying her features as he weighed her reactions to his words. Jacob was prepared to answer any and all questions that Maggie had, no matter how long it took. He had the time. 'I want to hate you for leaving but I can’t, I understand why you did it,' She understood why he did it? She didn't hate him for leaving? That was so much of a relief that Jacob couldn't even put it into words. He was more than grateful that she didn't hate him for leaving her without a word, but his reasons why he had left in the first place had been noble in nature. For her safety, he had to leave. He was just glad she understood why he had to leave, why it was in her best interest that he stayed as far away from her as possible, so that she could live a normal, human life. Where she could grow old, have a family, to where she could have everything her heart desired.
Jacob still wasn't sure why she was here right now, or how, but her next words answered his question and to say he was stunned at her response was an understatement. "A kitsune?” He questioned, not having heard of such a creature before. Jacob had been alive for over a century now and there were still things in this world he had yet to encounter, a kitsune being one of them. Maggie continued to explain, how she had been born a kitsune and because she hadn't exhibited any abilities, she figured she was human, but that hadn't been the same because she had stopped aging the day he had allegedly died. So that's why she hadn't aged a day, but then it dawned on him: she had been alive this entire time, alone, and he felt more guilt that he had previously just then. Had he known what she was... he wouldn't have left, he would have stayed by her side all this time.
"Have you been alone all this time?" He questioned and then not a moment later she had asked him the very same question. Jacob shook his head, "No, I have Lucy. She's a witch and was able to stop her aging altogether. We've been traveling together since the night I left... " He explained, but what he was more curious about was what she had been up to all this time. Had she been alone this entire time? Had she found another lover? So many unanswered questions flooded through his head, but he knew she would clarify them all here shortly. Maggie was always good at reading him, at giving him the answers he needed. This time, he was sure, was no different.

Maggie couldn’t believe that this was happening. She had spent over a century missing Jacob and wanting nothing more than to see him one more time and yet now he was here in front of her and it was a little overwhelming to say the least. She hadn’t really known about the supernatural world back then, her mother had told her stories about kitsunes and some other creatures but she had never really given too much thought to those stories after her mother died. She had grown up thinking that she was human like her father so anything else had seemed to be just beyond her reach. Now she knew that she was wrong, she was a kitsune and Jacob was still alive with meant that he had to be supernatural too. At first she could hardly believe what she was seeing but the more time they spent together the more she was starting to realise that this was her Jacob and the thought that he had been out there the whole time was enough to make her heart ache. She had encouraged Jake to move on after he’d left his family behind but she had never been able to do that herself. Her heart had only ever belonged to one person and that still hadn’t changed. “I’m so sorry,” she said gently as Jacob said that he was turned the night he left. She knew that that couldn’t have been easy for him, after all she had seen how difficult it was for Jake to stay away from his wife and children after he became a vampire and it wasn’t something that she would wish on anyone, let alone someone she loved. A part of her wanted to hate Jacob for leaving and perhaps if things had worked out differently then she might have done just that but she couldn’t now, not after seeing how much it had torn their son apart to go through the same thing. She wanted to tell Jacob why she understood but she wasn’t sure how to tell him that just yet. Not only had he missed out on having a life with her but he had also missed out on having a life with their son. “I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult all of this must have been for you,” she added. She really did feel bad for him and even though it had been a long time since they had last seen each other she couldn’t help but hope that they might be able to at least try and make up for some lost time now. “That’s right,” Maggie nodded. “Each kitsune is born with a different fox spirit. We’re natural fighters and we’re all able to control an element, for me it’s water – I’m a river kitsune. I’m still learning about them myself but that’s what I remember my mother telling me at least,” she explained. She still didn’t know how it all worked but she had figured some of it out at least and she was glad about that. Before she could answer Jacob’s question about whether she had been alone all this time he was answering hers and Maggie felt a smile touch her lips. “I’m glad the two of you had each other. Is she here too?” she asked, knowing that she wouldn’t be surprised given how much they had always ended up sticking together back then. There was a part of Maggie that wanted to avoid answering Jacob’s question but she knew that she couldn’t. “I haven’t been alone all this time either,” she said, averting her gaze for a moment as she tried to find the words. As it turned out she was pretty sure there wasn’t a good way to say it so she knew that she needed to just rip the band aid off and tell him the truth. “After you died I found out I was pregnant. We have a son and his name is Jake – Jake Stefan Avery,” she said, her eyes finally meeting his once more and searching them for his reaction. “He’s a vampire too, we’ve spent some time apart over the years but when it matters I’ve always had him.”JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
THIS was all so surreal, for her to be in his arms in the present day. Jacob never thought that he would ever get the chance again, feared that he had lost her forever to old age after leaving her that fateful night, and yet, there she was, looking as beautiful as she had back then. He never would have thought that she was something supernatural, that she never aged again. This was such a shock that he was still processing everything. To think that the two of them could have been together this entire time caused nothing but pain and resentment for himself to fester inside. If only he had known what she was... he wouldn't have left all those years ago. The two of them could have still been together, leaving peacefully and very much in love, and yet, that hadn't happened. He so wished she would have told him the truth, about what she really was because maybe, just maybe things would have turned out differently. It was a loud shot, but still. He only dreamed of a day like this one would happen and it was, this was all real. Even though it didn't seem like it.
'I’m so sorry,' she said to him and he shook his head firmly. "You have nothing to be sorry for." He replied gently, his eyes staring into hers lovingly as he placed his hand onto her cheek and brushed his thumb across her jaw softly. There was absolutely no need for her to ever apologize to him. 'I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult all of this must have been for you.' More so than she would ever come to realize. Leaving her that night had been the single most painful thing he had ever had to do in his entire life and that included completing his transition into a vampire. Leaving her was one of his worst memories, one that he thought of every single day.
Maggie then began to explain her species and Jacob couldn't help but be immensely interested in everything she had to say. She then perked up when he had mentioned that he had been with his sister this entire time. "I'm more than grateful for Lucy's company over the years. She is here in town too with me." Without Lucy, he would have most certainly given in to his darkest desires, given in to his ripper side. But having his twin sister by his side for all these years helped him fight that side of him, no matter how difficult it proved to be and some years, it was really difficult, but he managed to some extent.
'I haven’t been alone all this time either.' Upon hearing those words, Jacob's jaw clenched almost instantly at the thought that Maggie could have possibly found another lover or some other companion to keep her company all of these years. But even if she had he couldn't be angry at her, she thought he was dead this entire time. But the next words out of her mouth he hadn't expected and his eyes widened immensely. 'We have a son and his name is Jake – Jake Stefan Avery.' "I... we have a son?" He questioned, unable to believe the words she had just spoken seconds ago. His next questions would be to ask her if he too were alive or what became of him, but then she mentioned how he was also a vampire and that she had him by her side all these years, which brought him immense comfort. But still he couldn't believe it, he was a father? He had a son?
Of course with that realization more guilt weighed heavily upon his shoulders at his missing presence in not only Maggie's life, but also their son's. Jacob so wished he would have been able to be present to watch their son grow. Now he knew how Stefan felt when he learned of his own children, that he had missed out on so much of their lives. Jacob had connected to Stefan in more ways now than he could count, and it made him cherish the moments he spent with his father that much more. "Is he in town?" He asked, hoping so as he wanted nothing more than to meet his son, but one thing that plagued his mind... would he hate him for not being there?

In a way it felt almost as if the last hundred years had never happened. It would have been easy for Maggie to close her eyes and believe that Jacob had never died but she knew that it wouldn’t do any good. She had lost Jacob such a long time ago and even though she had done her best to stay strong for Jake that didn’t mean that she hadn’t spent every day missing her husband. There was a time when she had felt sure that they would have a future together, that they would build a life together and have the chance to raise their son together. That life had been ripped away from them and Maggie had found herself as a single mother raising their son alone. Nothing had worked out the way she had thought it would when she finally let Jacob in and they started spending more time together but now she knew that Jacob was alive after all and she would be lying if she said that she didn’t hope that this would be a chance for him to be a part of her life again and a part of Jake’s as well. She had no idea how she was going to tell either of them about the other but she knew that she would have to figure something out because they needed to know the truth. “I do because if things had been different then you could have stayed,” Maggie said gently. She hadn’t remembered the stories her mother had told her until after Jacob died, she hadn’t known that she was a kitsune back then but she knew that if she had done then perhaps they could have had a life together after all and Jacob could have been there to watch his son grow. Maggie couldn’t stop herself from leaning into his touch as Jacob’s hand came up to rest against her cheek and she felt her heart skip a beat as her eyes met his. The way he was looking at her so lovingly was the way she had never thought that she would ever get to see him looking at her again. She knew that love was mirrored in her own eyes, she hadn’t made it easy for Jacob to love her back then but her heart had only ever belonged to him and that hadn’t changed. She didn’t know what had happened after Jacob left but now he was here she knew that she wanted to know everything. “You always were inseparable, I’m glad you’ve been able to look out for each other,” she said gently. She knew that it would have been difficult for Jacob to learn how to adjust to being a vampire but he and Lucy had always had each other and she was relieved that they still did now. Jacob had already had to leave her behind after he became a vampire and she knew that it would have been that much worse for him if he’d lost his sister along the way as well. All of this still seemed to surreal to Maggie right now but if it was a dream then it was one that she knew she didn’t want to wake up from. “I hope I’ll get to see her, she deserves a medal for putting up with you on her own for so long and keeping you on the straight and narrow,” she teased, nudging his arm playfully with her own. Seeing the way Jacob’s jaw clenched as she said she hadn’t been alone all this time was enough to make Maggie’s heart ache. “Not like that, there has never been anyone for me but you,” she assured him, bringing her hand up and letting it rest lightly against his cheek. She wasn’t sure if the same was true for him but the truth was that she wouldn’t blame him if he had moved on from her. Jake had tried to get her to do the same but she just hadn’t been able to bring herself to do that and it wasn’t a decision that she regretted, she never would. There was still something there between them, she could feel it, but she knew that so much time had passed and there was every chance that Jacob had moved on from her during the time they had been apart. She wouldn’t blame him if he had, after all he had thought that she had died a long time ago, and if he had then she knew that she would be happy for him because more than anything she wanted him to be happy. Telling Jacob that he had a son was the hardest thing that she had ever had to do and she nodded as he repeated her words. “We do, you’re a father,” she said gently. The fact that he had missed out on so much of their son’s life hurt but she hoped that he would want the chance to change that now and be there for Jake. As Jacob asked if their son was in town, Maggie shook her head. “Not yet but he will be soon, I came here first to get things set up for us. I heard there were Salvatores in Mystic Falls and I wanted him to get to know that side of his family. I had no idea what you were one of them,” she explained. “Are you and Lucy the only ones?”JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
THERE was not a day that went by that he didn't miss Maggie. Not one single day. Jacob thought of her every day, she consumed his every thought. It was why he never took on another lover, he couldn't, for her sake. Lucy always wondered why he never could move on, and this was why. Jacob had loved Maggie since the moment he laid eyes on her all those centuries ago at that ball. He still remembered that day vividly, hung onto it even in his darkest days. It's what kept him going, outside of his sister of course. Remembering Maggie, remembering the life they could have lived, the children they could have had... it was difficult to say the least to know that would never get to happen because of what had happened to him. Raising a family with Maggie by the river had been the dream, one that had been so cruelly ripped from him. Becoming a vampire had single handedly ruined his chances of having a family with the woman he loved.
Except, that hadn't been the case at all.
'I do because if things had been different then you could have stayed,' Jacob signed at Maggie's words. "Perhaps, but we cannot dwell on the past. What happened, happened. There's no changing that." He said, his voice barely above a whisper as he rubbed her cheek gently with his thumb, and the way she instinctively leaned into his palm made him smile. It was just like old times, back when the two were so blindly in love that nothing else mattered. Jacob listened as Maggie stated how him and Lucy were always inseparable and he laughed, nodding in agreement. "Yes we definitely were and still are. I don't know how I would have made it without her by my side." Which was an understatement to say the least. Lucy saved him from the darkest parts of himself, saved him one too many times from shutting it all off. He needed her more than Lucy would ever realize. Becoming a vampire had been difficult, but if he had lost his sister in the process he didn't know what would have happened to him. Jacob was just thankful she was a talented witch and was able to stop her aging altogether.
'I hope I’ll get to see her, she deserves a medal for putting up with you on her own for so long and keeping you on the straight and narrow.' Maggie teased as she playfully nudged him. Jacob couldn't help the laugh that escaped his lips, grinning ear to ear. "When Lucy comes back to town I'm sure she would love nothing more than to see you." He explained with a smile, knowing full and well Lucy would love nothing more. Jacob could only imagine the look on her face when he tells her that Maggie was in fact alive, but not only that, but that she was an Aunt too. What a conversation that would. be.
Jacob could not help but clench his jaw at the thought of Maggie with someone else, but then she reassured him it wasn't anything romantic and places her hand onto his cheek this time. So naturally, he was curious who she had spent centuries with. That little notion was enough for him to know that there was still love between the two, that much certainly had never changed, even with centuries apart and believing the other to had died. Even if she had, if that person made her happy that was all he cared about. Sure, it would be painful, but all he wanted for Maggie was her happiness, that's all he ever wanted and that certainly hadn't changed, even centuries later.
But what Jacob had no expected by any means, was for her to tell him that he was a father, that he had a son of his own. Jacob truly was at a loss for words. 'We do, you’re a father.' Maggie repeated gently. He couldn't believe it. Years he spent wondering of what could have been, on the life he and Maggie could have lived, only to find out centuries later that he had a son. That they had a son, together. Hearing that their son wasn't in town currently caused his heart to falter, he wanted to meet him as soon as he could. But he knew he had to be patient, soon enough and he would be able to meet his son. His dad wasn't going to believe this, that not only was he a father, but a grandfather as well.
'I heard there were Salvatores in Mystic Falls and I wanted him to get to know that side of his family. I had no idea what you were one of them. Are you and Lucy the only ones?' Jacob shook his head rapidly, "No. Lucy and I, we... we finally found my father. Stefan Salvatore, he's alive. He's a vampire like myself and.. and Jake. Lucy and I actually live at the old Salvatore Boarding House with him and our Uncle, Damon." He explained. His uncle wouldn't believe this either, no one could. Hell, Jacob still couldn't believe that this was happening, that Maggie was alive and not only that, but that they had a son together too who had grown up and become a vampire. Even though he was sad that his son had the same fate as him, he was glad that he was able to be there for his mother, for Maggie. Knowing that she wasn't alone all these years made him feel a little bit better, especially being with someone who was a symbol of the love that they shared with one another.

“That’s true,” Maggie admitted as Jacob said that they couldn’t change what had happened. “When did you get so wise?” she teased, a smile touching her lips as her eyes met his. It was scary just how quickly old habits came rushing back to her now that she was in Jacob’s presence again. It was automatic for her to lean into his touch the way she had done so many times before and for a moment she could almost forget that it had been over a hundred years since she had last seen him. In that moment she finally felt like the piece of her that she had been missing ever since he’d died was back and Maggie knew that she would fight to keep Jacob in her life no matter what happened between them. She knew that she still loved him, there wasn’t a doubt in her mind about that, but so much time had passed and the truth was that she wasn’t sure how Jacob felt. There were times when he looked at her and she could still see the same love in his eyes that had always been there but she didn’t know what he had been through or who he was now and she knew that she wanted to find out. “You would have managed, you can do anything when you put your mind to it. I’m glad you didn’t have to do it alone though,” she assured him gently. He had managed to break through her defences and that had taken some doing so if he could do that then she didn’t doubt that he could have figured being a vampire out too. As Jacob said that Lucy would want nothing more than to see her, Maggie couldn’t stop a smile from touching her lips. “The feeling is mutual, I’ve missed her,” she admitted. She hadn’t missed Lucy anywhere near as much as she had missed Jacob but even though those words remained unspoken she wouldn’t be surprised if he already knew. He had always been the one who knew her best, the one who seemed to understand her in a way that no one else ever had, and she hoped that hadn’t changed. Maggie knew that she didn’t have to explain that there hadn’t been anyone else for her after Jacob but she had wanted him to know. Her father had tried to find a suitable suitor for her so many times but she had never been happy with any of them. They had all wanted a trophy wife they could control, they hadn’t been interested in who she was but Jacob was different. She had joked that Lucy deserved a medal for putting up with him for so long but the truth was that Maggie knew Jacob deserved a medal for putting up with her for so long. She hadn’t made it easy for him in the beginning because she had been trying to protect her heart but she had ended up falling for him anyway and that was it for her. There had never been anyone else and she hadn’t wanted to find anyone to replace him in her life despite how many times Jake had tried to get her to move on. Telling Jacob that he was a father wasn’t easy, Maggie would have given anything for there to be an easy way to break the news to him, but there wasn’t. The life they could have had together had become painfully clear to her the moment she saw Jacob again but now he knew how things could have been as well and her heart ached for him. They had talked about having a family before he died so she knew how much it meant to him but he had missed out on so much of their son’s life and she could only hope that they would hit it off when they did finally meet. She wanted to tell their son that his dad was in town, that he was a vampire too, and for a split second she thought about calling him and asking him to get to Mystic Falls as quickly as he could but she knew that would only panic him and that was the last thing she wanted so they were just going to have to be patient. This wasn’t something that she could tell Jake over the phone, it had to be done face to face. As Jacob explained about finding his dad and uncle, Maggie’s expression softened. “I’m so happy for you, I know how much finding him meant to you,” she said sincerely. That was what Jacob had always wanted and she was glad that it had finally happened for him. “What’s he like?” she asked, knowing that she would be overstepping if she asked if she could meet him. She wasn’t sure where she and Jacob stood right now but now she knew that he was in town she was certain that she had made the right decision by suggesting she and Jake move there. JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
JACOB chuckled at Maggie's comment on him being so wise. "I think it's in my genes." He joked, nudging her softly. It was just like old times, back before everything in their lives got so messed up. Back when life was so much simpler. Now things were so screwed up, had been for a long while. But, thankfully, life had gotten so much better. So so much better. He had Maggie back in his life, she was alive and not only that, but they had a child together, something the two of them had dreamed about their entire marriage. Jacob had thought that he would never get the chance to be a dad, and yet, his dream had come true. Jacob had a son, Jake, and he couldn't be any more happier to learn of such. He couldn't wait to meet him, whenever he eventually got to town. He knew his dad would for sure want to meet his grandson, which would be a fun conversation to have. He knew his dad would love meeting more family, as that's all he ever wanted to have of his own, and now, he not only had children, but a grandchild as well. Who would have thought this to be possible? Certainly not him.
'You would have managed, you can do anything when you put your mind to it. I’m glad you didn’t have to do it alone though.' Jacob smiled, "I'm glad I didn't either." He said softly, and boy was that the truth. With having the same ripper gene that his dad has, it was good to have his sister to help keep him on the right back, because without her around, there was no telling what kind of person he would have turned into, or even worse, who he might of ended up hurting or killing. All it took was one time and he would have been kicked off the edge, he would have lost it entirely. It just takes one and then he would've flown off the handles, similar to that of his dad. The two had a conversation about their ripper tendencies and it did make him feel better to know that he wasn't alone in this. It made him feel a little less like an outsider, and gave him some much needed answers on why he had such trouble being around blood. It all made sense why when he spoke with his dad.
Jacob truly could not believe that any of this was happening, to have Maggie back in his life was everything he had ever dreamed of, but not only that, but they had a son together. That alone was worth living for. He and Maggie had a family together, something they had both always dreamed of. It truly was a dream come true, a dream he thought had been lost the moment he had turned into a vampire. But he couldn't stop thinking about the fact that he had missed out on seeing his son grow up and he could only hope that Jake wouldn't despise him for not being there for him. He hoped him and his son could get along with one another, that they could bond like he and his own dad did. It was all he ever wanted.
As he told Maggie about finding his dad and uncle, he watched as Maggie's expression softened, telling him how happy she was for him for finding him, because she knew how much it meant to find him. Finding his dad was everything that he had ever wanted and him and his sister had found him, together. Just like they had always hoped to do. "He's great. It's funny how alike we are. It's sometimes like looking into a mirror." He explained with a chuckle. "So, what have you and Jake been up to all these years?" He asked as they walked side by side through the park. Jacob wanted to know all about their lives throughout the years, he wanted every single detail possible. He'd missed out on so much of their lives already, he didn't want to miss out on any more. Regardless of how Maggie felt, he would always love her deeply. There had never been anyone else in his life, only Maggie. All he could hope was that she still felt the same about him as she did years ago and that hopefully, they could pick back up where they left off.

“Sure it is,” Maggie laughed, rolling her eyes playfully as Jacob nudged her. It felt good to be able to joke around with him like this again, Maggie had done her best to get on with her life ever since he died and having Jake to focus on had proved to be a great distraction from the pain that she was feeling at the loss of her husband but the truth was that even though the pain had eventually subsided she had never stopped missing him. Jacob was the only guy she had ever seen herself having a future with despite her father’s best attempts at setting her up with various different suitors. He had wanted her to be well looked after but he hadn’t lived to see her truly happy with Jacob. That happiness had ended up being short lived when they should have had a long and happy life together but now that he was back in her life she honestly hoped that it was to stay. They might not be together right now but she had never stopped loving him and she finally felt like the hole that had been punched through her heart when he died was finally starting to heal. Maggie wished that Jacob could have been there to see the birth of their son and see him grow up but she knew that she could at least fill him in on what he had missed and she couldn’t wait to introduce them. Maggie had always had Jake to keep her company but she would be lying if she said she hadn’t worried that Jacob had been on his own. Thankfully that wasn’t the case and she knew that she was definitely going to have to thank Lucy when she saw her. No matter what happened next Maggie knew that she was always going to care about Jacob and she was always going to want what was best for him. The love she felt for him had stayed with her even after all these years and it felt stronger than ever now. She really did understand why he had left but she still couldn’t help but think about the life they would have had if he’d stayed and it was enough to make her heart ache. “Are you planning on sticking around town?” she asked, hoping that it wasn’t just a short term thing and that he would be staying since she and Jake had made plans to put down roots in the town. As Jacob went quiet for a minute, Maggie’s expression softened. “What is it?” she asked gently, not sure what was on his mind right now. The fact that Jacob had found his father after all this time really was incredible to Maggie and she felt a smile touch her lips as Jacob talked about him. “I’m so happy for you, I hope I’ll get the chance to meet him,” she admitted. She knew that it was different with Stefan, Maggie had never met him so she didn’t have that as an excuse but she hoped that Jacob wouldn’t mind. “In what ways are the two of you alike?” she asked, unable to deny that she was curious. It had been such a long time since she had last seen Jacob and she knew that she wanted to get to know the person he had become. Falling into step beside Jacob it really did feel like old times and that alone was enough to bring a smile to Maggie’s face. “We’ve travelled quite a bit, we could never really stay in one place for more than a few years before people started to realise that we weren’t ageing. We’ve spent some time apart as well, Jake needed some space to live his own life but I always feel better when he’s close by,” she admitted, knowing that she was always going to be protective of their son. “Jake has had his struggles but he’s doing better. He’s like you, he had a wife and children but he had to leave them after he became a vampire because he didn’t want to hurt them,” she added, needing Jacob to know that the family line had continued. “I went back to school a few times while Jake was off on his own and now I’ve got a job here as a social worker,” she added. As they walked her hand brushed lightly against Jacob’s and she felt a surprised smile touch her lips at the contact. There was a part of her that wanted to take his hand in hers the way she had done so many times before but she knew that she didn’t want to push her luck, not now when he was finally back in her life. “How about you, what have the two of you been up to?”JACOB SALVATORE

━ pitch-black winter nights live in my bones ━
THE sound of Maggie's laugh sent his heart fluttering a million miles an hour. It felt so damn good to hear her laugh again, he had dreamt of the day he would hear her laugh again, to even see her smile. Jacob had dreamt of this day every single night ever since he was turned. Ever since that fateful night, he had longed to see Maggie again, to feel her skin under his touch, to hear the sound of her laughter, hell to hear her heart beating.... It's all he wanted, all he needed. It was what kept him going all these years, that there was a possibility of seeing her again, in any fashion. Even if it meant in death, he knew at some point he would get to see his beloved again. But never in his wildest dreams did he think he would see her alive and breathing, in modern times. Hell, he never dreamed of having a son of his own. To think that Maggie was pregnant with their son while he had been turned... it was disheartening to say the least. Jacob would have loved nothing more than to be by her side during the pregnancy, to help and watch his son grow. But he never got that chance, neither did his own father. It seemed the Salvatore men were doomed to never see their children grow up.
A cycle that would never end. But he so desperately wished it would, for his own son's sake, and for his own grandchild's sake. He hoped his son's child was able to escape this life, he knew his son hadn't, but maybe his grandchild was able to escape the life that his family had been doomed to experience. Regardless, Jacob couldn't wait to meet his son, whenever that may be, to be able to talk with him, to learn everything he could about him. Jacob only hoped that his son would want to meet him and that he didn't resent him for not being there.
That was definitely not his choice.
'Are you planning on sticking around town?' Maggie asked him, and Jacob nodded, smiling gently. "I am. After Lucy and I found our Dad, I don't see any reason to live anywhere but where he is." He stated gently, realizing that he had grown quiet because Maggie had questioned him on it, wondering what was going on through his brain. That was a loaded question and if he were being honest, he didn't want to tell Maggie what he was thinking about, how for a good part of his immortal life he spent it in a blood frenzy, killing anyone who got even remotely close to him. That was a part of him he didn't want Maggie to know about or god forbid, ever see. "Nothing, just wondering how I'm so lucky to see you in person again. I didn't think I would ever get that chance." While what he said was the absolute truth, he knew that wasn't his whole truth, but it was one he was capable of giving Maggie. Maybe someday he would tell her about his darkest times, but for now, he would remain quiet about it.
'I’m so happy for you, I hope I’ll get the chance to meet him. In what ways are the two of you alike?' Another smile, Jacob would never get tired of seeing it. "You will definitely get to meet him, that was something I always wanted to do when we first met. I wanted you to be able to meet my Dad, but obviously that was never an option. I'm glad it is now, though." He replied softly, staring down into her eyes. Jacob wished he could have introduced his Dad to Maggie, for him to have been able to see what an incredible person she was. The two of them would have gotten along greatly. While that hadn't been an option now, it sure as hell was now. "Let me put it this way, my Dad and I are pretty much the exact same person. You'll see just what I mean when you meet him." He said with a smile. What he told Maggie wasn't an exaggeration either, his Dad and him were identical in more ways than one.
The two walked in stride through the park as she spoke, explaining how her and their son had traveled all over together, which made him feel much better knowing that the two had each other. What Maggie said next made him frown heavily, to hear that his son experienced the same trauma he endured made his heart heavy. He hadn't ever wanted his own child to experience what he had gone through, and yet, that is exactly what had happened. "Did his family know the truth? About what happened to him? Are they... are they alive? Did he keep in touch with them?" He questioned, his heart racing just thinking about the trauma his own child had to experience. Jacob now more than ever wanted to meet him, to talk with him and let him know how he went through the exact same thing... and that he would be there for him in whatever capacity he allowed him to be.
Maggie continued, explaining how she went back to school a few times and was now a licensed social worker. Jacob smiled, proud of her for achieving her goals and helping people. He knew that was the absolute perfect field for her to go into as she had always enjoyed helping others. As they walked through the park, Jacob caught his hand brushing up against hers and he wanted so desperately to grab a hold of it and never let it go. But he refrained as he didn't know where the two of them stood. 'How about you, what have the two of you been up to?' She questioned and he looked over at her before looking back ahead. "Lucy and I traveled, looking for our Dad. Now that we found him, we've been back in town, trying to get a grip on our lives again. It's been a long time since we've been in one town for more than a couple months. Now that we've been here for a while, Lucy is working at the school, and I am thinking about taking up a teaching position at the local college. I haven't decided just yet." He explained as they walked. It felt so damn good to talk with her again. Once upon a time and she was his best friend, and when he had to leave, he felt a part of him die. But now that she was back in his life again there was no way in hell he was letting her out of his sight.
Not ever again.
