If Giuseppe could’ve scripted something that would leave his eldest son in agony and abject misery, this would’ve been it. His entire life his father had been pretty happy to make it clear to his eldest son that he’d never amount to anything. Maybe Giuseppe had known more than he had but he’d always been determined to make the old man eat his words. At the end of the day that didn’t look like it was about to happen though. As ever ready to push a fight as he was Damon knew he’d landed himself here. If he’d bitten his tongue, backed off from Klaus Mikaelson he might’ve avoided the bite. He doubted he could’ve stopped Klaus from forcing Stefan to head out to pastures unknown with him but it might not’ve gone down this way if he hadn’t been him. Avoiding the fight and the bite now flooding his system with poison might have meant him not opening his mouth and pushing whatever had been between him and Claire practically since the two of them had met but time to explore this later was surely better than him teetering on the brink of an abyss he wasn’t crawling out of. No matter how hard he’d tried to bite his tongue at times it had always gotten him into trouble. Damon’s throat worked, his lashes dropping as he glanced aside at the thought of the promise he’d made on the night Stefan had forced him into making the transition. He’d never been able to hold it back, words flooding out before his mental filter could catch him. Those words had gotten him all snared up at Katherine in the first place, the power that they, she, had given him seemingly worth all the rest of the trouble.
Now it didn’t feel so worth it. All those years spent trying to erode any happiness his brother had found. All out of a sense of heartbreak that hadn’t been real at the time. Even if it had been it wouldn’t have been worth it, not when Katherine had merely been jerking his strings all along. Clearing his throat, Damon avoided Claire’s eyes, not wanting to colour how she saw him with what he’d done. ”I wanted her out of the way,” he admitted hoarsely. ”And I wanted more of an in with the Founder’s Council. Two birds, one stone. I attacked someone, compelled her to blame it on Lexi instead. When the Sheriff came to round her up I stepped in, staked her.” And he’d cost his brother the best friend he’d ever had. Somehow Stefan had forgiven him afterwards, something he’d never entirely understood. There was regret there now, but perhaps not enough, it had all been part of his desperate plan to get Katherine out of the tomb and in the end that hadn’t been worth any of the trouble he’d caused. For that alone karma should’ve slapped him down. Damon’s mouth twitched at Claire’s reassurance but the grim was still there, etched into his features by the certainty he couldn’t shake. It rattled in his chuckle as she told she cared about him. Damon’s brows furrowed, his eyes squeezing tighter shut as he lay so close to her. ”She shouldn’t but trying to convince her of that’s like banging my head against a brick wall.” It had been that way since he’d first seen her up on that stage, the brick wall rushing up to smack him in the face as he’d stopped dead in the crowd, looking up at her. Damon swallowed hard again, the tension in him melting away as he heard the rise and fall of her voice, then and now. ”First time I’d felt something for anyone other than Katherine,” he admitted hoarsely. ”She was enchanting though, that voice just drawing in everyone around her.” And that had all been stolen in the end. Thanks to him and Stefan she’d left all of that behind.

So much had happened over the course of Claire’s life and for a lot of it she had been left to wonder why. She had been chosen to become a human blood bag by Henry and Samuel and it was only by luck that the Salvatores had come into her sister’s life and the three of them had set out to save her. Claire knew that her life could have easily turned out very differently and during her darkest moments she had found herself wondering whether it would have been better if she had died at the hands of Henry and Samuel but she had always realised just how foolish it was to think that way. She was the reason that her sister was dead but if she hadn’t killed Violet then her sister would have killed Stefan and possibly even Damon as well, not to mention an unthinkable amount of innocent people considering that her soul had been chipped away at until there was nothing left of the Violet that she had known. Claire knew that she might not have made that much of a difference with her life but she was doing her best and she knew that that had to count for something. Working as a police officer was rewarding and while it meant that she wasn’t following the dream that she’d had ever since she was a child, it still meant that she was doing what she wanted to do. She could have easily gone anywhere in the world when she decided to move on from the last place she had lived in but she had found herself drawn to Mystic Falls and she was grateful for that now. It had taken a lot for her to reconnect with the Salvatore brothers and start living her life again but they had made her realise that there was no point just drifting through life without getting involved. No matter what happened she needed to continue surrounding herself with people again and that was something that she promised that she was going to do. She couldn’t deny that the thought of losing Damon terrified her though. There had been something between them right from the start and he was one of the few people that she could always count on. She knew that he had made a lot of bad decisions over the years but the world without Damon Salvatore in it would be a much worse place so she was determined to get him to hold on until Stefan got there with the cure. As Damon told her what had happened to Lexi, Claire couldn’t deny that she was surprised. Stefan had told her about the blonde before but since she had found the brothers in Mystic Falls he had been surprisingly tight lipped about her and now she knew why. “That was an awful thing to do but Stefan clearly forgave you for it,” she offered. The more time she spent around the brothers the more she was starting to see that they would forgive each other for just about anything but she wasn’t sure whether Damon had actually forgiven Stefan for getting him to complete the transition all those years ago. “Have you forgiven him for what he did?” she asked, pretty sure that he would know what she meant by that question. “Sounds like you might have found someone who is just as stubborn as you are,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at him. She knew that Damon didn’t really mean it and even if he did then it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference. She was done with living on the outskirts of society and she was done with not letting anyone get close to her. She knew what her heart wanted and as Damon spoke once more she couldn’t help it, she let her hand rest against his cheek as she leaned forward and kissed him. “I never knew you felt that way,” she admitted, her lips brushing against his as she spoke. Forgiveness had never come easily for him. He’d known he shouldn’t be but even after his mother died there had been a bitterness there. She’d left him with Giuseppe, left him to try and take care of Stefan and protect him from all of that on his own. By then he’d already been a teenager but that didn’t matter a bit. She’d died and he was left there. That bitterness hadn’t been erased by Katherine turning him. It had remained, sharp on his tongue, almost impossible to hold back. Damon knew he should’ve bitten down on it a little more but when so few people around him, himself included, deserved forgiveness, where the hell did you start? It was easier to cut it off, to burn those bridges, to raze everything to the ground and say that none of it mattered one bit. It wasn’t easier of course, you were just building up a callous, putting off the moment when it was town away, leaving the flesh beneath unprotected, vulnerable and raw. This was the moment, he thought, his throat working, trying to rid itself of the heat burning there, Klaus had torn it away for him and without that protection everything seemed to hit a hundred times harder. The pain from the bite, the knowledge of what he’d done, the fact that he’d wasted so many years on all of it thanks to Katherine.
Without Katherine jerking his heartstrings he probably wouldn’t have ended up in England in the first place, wouldn’t have left Virginia in the first place. He’d have married some girl hand-picked by his father and found no more favour than he’d done before. Katherine had twisted both him and Stefan up, guided them around the world for years from a distance. He guessed he had to thank her for that, even if he hated her for almost everything else he’d done. His voice was hoarse as he admitted to Claire what he’d done, the words rasping like sandpaper but Damon knew he had to get them out. He swallowed the burning pain again, shaking his head minutely. ”I don’t know why he did. Why he ever forgave me for any of it. It’s like I had to take everything that was his.” Katherine first, anything that made his brother’s life better after that. When the shoe was on the other foot forgiveness was far harder to find. Damon shifted on the bed, his shoulders rolling under the t-shirt he’d sweated clean through. ”Maybe, finally,” he admitted finally. ”I realized I was hating the wrong person.” The right one was undoubtedly Katherine and if he got through this, he’d make her pay in some way for all she’d done. Katherine would pay and Claire … he’d thank, if she got him through this. The chuckle hurt, breaking off into a rattling cough as he peeled his eyes open to look at her. ”Lucky me,” he rasped. ”I guess I needed that more than I realized.” Headache or not at times, he wouldn’t have made it this far without her. Turning his head into her head, his brow furrowing together as he lost himself in the kiss for a moment, Damon let himself drift in the memory. ”I’m the king of hiding it, huh? Voice of an angel and all that mischief in big dark eyes.”

Of all the things that Claire had thought that she would end up doing while she was in Mystic Falls, trying to stop Damon from giving up after he was bitten by Klaus definitely wasn’t one of them. She hadn’t even known that a werewolf bite was toxic to a vampire until today but it made sense, they needed something that they could use to their advantage in order to keep the scales balanced. She had heard a lot about Klaus since reuniting with Stefan and Damon but even after everything she had been told she hadn’t thought that he would stoop so long as to bite Damon so that Stefan would do what he wanted. She knew that the history between Stefan and Klaus was complicated, from what she understood the two of them had been friends once a long time ago but Stefan’s memory of their time together had been compelled away. There had to be remnants of that friendship that still lingered on Klaus’ part at least to make him go to so much trouble and a part of her felt bad about calling Stefan and telling him what had happened which would no doubt make him play right into Klaus’ hands but the other option was to let Damon die and that wasn’t even worth thinking about as far as she was concerned. She knew that he had made a lot of mistakes over the years but then again none of them were perfect. They were never going to get things right all the time but the Damon she knew was a good person and she refused to believe that he deserved this and thankfully Stefan didn’t feel that way either. What was going to happen next she wasn’t sure but she knew that she needed to get Damon to hold on long enough for Stefan to get the cure to them and she was doing her best to do just that. She hadn’t expected to learn that Damon had killed Lexi but Stefan had still managed to forgive him for it and that spoke volumes as to the bond between the two brothers as far as she was concerned. “You don’t still feel that way now?” she asked, unable to deny that she was curious. She had seen that kind of behaviour from Damon back when they were in London but something in him seemed to have changed now and she couldn’t deny that she was intrigued by it. Bringing her hand up she let it rest gently against his cheek as he said that he might finally be ready to forgive Stefan for making him complete the transition. “I’m glad you finally realised that,” she admitted. Stefan’s only sin had been wanting to have his brother by his side the same way he had done for the first seventeen years of his life, it had been Katherine who had been pulling the strings and had put them both in that position in the first place. She had never met the woman and if she was honest she hoped that she never did because the truth was that she wasn’t sure that she would be able to hold back if they ever crossed paths. “You should tell Stefan that, you know. What he did still weighs heavily on him,” she added. She had seen it in her friend in the moments when he thought that she hadn’t been paying attention and she knew that knowing that Damon no longer blamed him would do the two of them a world of good. “I’ll remind you of that the next time you try arguing with me,” Claire laughed before feeling a mischievous smile work its way across her face at his next words after the kiss. “Your words, not mine,” she grinned as she pressed her lips to his in one more lingering kiss before pulling back as something caught her attention. “Did you hear that?” she asked, hoping that it might just be Stefan finally home with the cure. Wasted time. All of it. He knew better than to kick himself for how he’d acted while he was still blinded by Katherine but he wanted to. The mental ass kicking he’d been trying ever since he’d left time with the feel of Katherine’s lips still on his hadn’t worked. She’d been pulling his strings for years and Damon knew he’d let her. Some part of him had known that something wasn’t right but his aching heart had hidden the truth from him in a way that nothing else could. That heart had hated his brother at times, had wanted to make his life a living misery because that’s what his own was meant to be without Katherine in it. So sure she’d been killed at that church, so sure he was going to spend an eternal life without her. More fool him. Damon let out a faint huff of amusement at the thought but it brought on a rattling cough, a flesh slick of sweat seeming to pop on his skin as he settled back on the bed. Even after he’d heard that there were vampires alive under the church, that he had a chance of freeing Katherine from the tomb she’d spent a century and a half in, he’d been blind to it all and eaten up by hatred. What for? Definitely not for the only woman he was supposed to have loved. She hadn’t felt the same and that much had been made painfully obvious. That hundred and fifty years of hatred, interspersed with moments of what should’ve been … wasted for the most part.
There was just no way to turn the clock back and change that now. Damon knew regrets could run as deep as they wanted but there was no way to go back and stop himself. All he could do was make up for it, if he lived through this. Swallowing did little to ease a desert dry throat but Damon did it repeatedly until his voice could emerge again. ”Not anymore,” he managed honestly. His momentary feelings for Elena had disappeared the minute the truth about that kiss had emerged. There was a gulf between what he’d thought and felt then and what was running through his head now. Looking death in the face would do that for you. Damon’s lips curved, his cheek moving softly against Claire’s hand. ”It took me long enough. Giuseppe always said I was blind.” But it hadn’t been from idiocy, it was pure stubbornness that he inherited from his father. That sense that he was always right. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Shutting his eyes, Damon ducked his head slightly, his expression sobering as he looked back up from beneath his lashes. ”I get through this, I will,” he promised. There was that big if hanging over this still though. No sign of Stefan, only momentary relief in the memory Claire had taken him back to. In the kiss that she touched to his lips and the smile that followed. ”I’ll pretend this all fried my memory,” he drawled. ”Dying man’s prerogative.” Dying was the operative word. As Claire drew back from that second lingering kiss, Damon rolled back on the bed a faint shudder running through him. ”Stefan. He’s done it. You had to, didn’t you brother?” Blue eyes rolled shut. The one thing he hadn’t wanted to happen, Stefan exchanging his life for his big brother’s.

Claire had known that something was up the minute she had seen Damon at the station but this really wasn’t anything like she had expected. Damon had always seemed so invincible even when he was being held captive by Henry and Samuel. There had never been a doubt in her mind that he would live to see another day back then but now she wasn’t so sure. She was doing her best to stay positive and keep Damon’s spirits up but deep down she was scared. She had always cared about Damon, more than she had ever felt comfortable admitting, but now she knew that there was no point in holding back if it meant that Damon would have something to fight for. She didn’t want to lose him but she knew that he was fading fast and that was something that she couldn’t let happen. Damon had done a lot of awful things over the years but as far as she was concerned the world just wouldn’t be the same without him in it. He had saved her life back in London and even though she knew that she had repaid the favour when she had helped rescue him from Henry and Samuel, she still wasn’t ready to give up on him just yet. Damon was a fighter, she had seen it time and time again during the time that she had known him, but he was struggling and she knew that she just had to hope that Stefan would manage to get Klaus to give him the cure and that he would show up sooner rather than later because she knew that if he didn’t show up soon then it would be too late. Stefan and Damon hadn’t seen eye to eye for a long time but when it came down to it they would do anything to save one another so she knew that Stefan would do the right thing even if Damon didn’t want him to. Now probably wasn’t the time to try and fix the rift between the brothers but she knew that she had to try. If the worst did happen then she wanted to make sure that Damon didn’t have any regrets and she had a feeling that letting Stefan continue to think that he hated him would probably be a pretty big one. “Pig headed maybe but I wouldn’t say you’re blind,” Claire teased. As he spoke again, her expression turned more serious. “You are going to get through this Damon, do you hear me? You just have to hang in there a little longer,” she assured him. “You owe me, remember? I beat you at pool so this is me collecting my prize. You have to live.” She had always felt better knowing that Damon and Stefan were out there somewhere in the world so the thought of living in a world without Damon in it just wasn’t something that she even wanted to consider. As he spoke again the teasing edge was back and Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “Sorry but it doesn’t work that way. You can’t remember some of the things you’ve said when this is all over but not all.” She wouldn’t be surprised if Damon wanted to forget what he had said about his feelings for her when all was said and done and if he did then she knew that she would find a way to move on but selective memory wasn’t something that she was prepared to entertain. Hearing the door closing downstairs, Claire felt relief flood through her. “Of course he did, you’re his brother,” Claire said, swatting his shoulder as she listened out for Stefan. “We’re up here,” she called, knowing that Stefan would be able to find them. As he appeared in the doorway, Claire was on her feet in an instant and she pulled the younger Salvatore brother into a hug. “I’m so glad you made it,” she said sincerely. “Have you got it?” As Stefan confirmed that he did before holding up the vial, her smile returned before she realised what that meant. “What did you have to give Klaus in return?” “He wants me to leave with him. I guess he wants a travelling companion while he makes hybrids,” Stefan explained. That alone was enough to make Claire’s eyes sting with tears. “Don’t go, we need you here,” she told her friend even though she knew that it wasn’t going to change his mind. “I have to, I’m sorry. Look after Damon and Elena for me,” he said before stepping forward and holding the vial of Klaus’ blood to his brother’s lips. “Drink,” he told him. “I know you still hate me but I can’t let you die. You’re my brother and I love you no matter what.”DAMON SALVATORE

The heat was growing. Burning beneath his skin like a wildfire out of control. He’d felt parched almost since Klaus’ fangs had punctured his arm. Now he was being eaten up by that thirst. Claire taking him back into his memories had helped, as did the sound of her teasing words but time had marched on and the line was coming up fast. Stubbornness had gotten him this far, through things that would’ve crushed more men, it wouldn’t save his life time though. That he was pretty damn sure of. What Giuseppe had predicted all those years ago had finally come true. His son’s mouth had gotten him into the sort of trouble he couldn’t get out of and Damon was pretty damn sure he was dragging Stefan down with him. His little brother had always been the one to fall on his sword, to make the sacrifice in the end. On the other hand he’d been the one to run, taking what Giuseppe called the easy way out. He lashed out with his temper rather than working through what was tearing his gut or heart out, he was the one who pretended not to care, who turned a cold shoulder or ran entirely. Angry Damon, screwing up the lives of everybody around him. Giuseppe would’ve crowed at the thought. That wasn’t all he was though. He’d come back to Mystic Falls trying to make some sort of amends to those he’d hurt. It wasn’t the first time, and Damon doubted it would be the last if he managed to get through this. He wasn’t infallible in the way his little brother could be. He screwed up, he hurt people when he did, but there was still enough heart beneath to feel guilty for it. Still enough heart for it to ache now that Claire was growing serious with him. That was how he really knew that the last few grains of sand in his own little hourglass were nearly gone.
Huffing out his amusement at Claire’s teasing words, Damon let his eyes slip shut. He nuzzled into the touch of her hand, dark brows raising faintly. He’d always said that Giuseppe was full of bull but there were moments when he managed to pin things clear through with an inescapable truth. ”He’d say they’re probably related. I only ever saw what I wanted to see.” When it had come to Katherine it was an escape from his father, even if it meant hurting his little brother in the process. Damon swallowed hard as his throat burned hotter with that relentless thirst. He could smell the blood in Claire’s veins, knew it would be right there beneath the golden surface of her skin. ”You’re going to hold me to my promise now?” he asked. Crooning out a groan, Damon shook his head. ”I knew you were gonna sucker punch me with that at some point. I hate to break it to you. Claire, that might not be in my control anymore.” It was in Stefan’s and right now his brother was probably signing some sort of life altering promise in blood. ”Swiss cheese memory, Klaus’ bite tore holes right through it,” he lied. It was doing far worse and he honestly believed it would’ve killed him if Stefan hadn’t come charging in. ”Didn’t mean he could pull off a miracle.” That had all been on Klaus and whatever promise he’d dragged out of Stefan. Damon tried to lever himself up but his arm gave and he sank back, brow damp, skin fevered as he shook his head. ”It’s more than that, it’s always going to be more than that,” he rasped. Damon’s eyes burned as he let them fall shut, his lips working at the vile of blood. He licked the last of it from his head, shaking it gently. ”No hate,” he managed. ”Never hated you. Loved.” Screwing his eyes up, Damon gasped as the burn seemed to intensify for a moment. The darkness that had spread through his veins seemed to bring itself to the surface of his skin, oozing through the pores with an agonizing burn.

Claire had been surprised when she had returned to the station to find Damon there waiting for her but it had come as even more of a surprise when she had learned of the werewolf bite that was slowly killing him. She had never wanted to lose anyone again the same way she had lost Violet which was why she had avoided letting anyone get too close to her and now she was facing exactly that with Damon. She knew that he hadn’t wanted her to call Stefan but she had known that he’d had a right to know. Had it been Violet then she would have wanted every chance to save her sister and she wouldn’t have been able to do that by being kept in the dark. It was the same for Stefan. She knew that he and Damon didn’t always see eye to eye but at the end of the day they were brothers and it was clear to her that they would do just about anything for each other. She had seen it back in London when she first met the two of them and she kept seeing it now that they were all living in Mystic Falls. She didn’t want Stefan to end up giving up his life in order to save Damon’s but she knew that he would probably do whatever Klaus asked and she felt guilty about that right now but she knew that it was something that had to be done. It would come down to Stefan’s choice but something told her that Klaus wouldn’t do anything too drastic anyway. She got the impression that there was some kind of history there between the two of them and she had no idea what it was but it was enough to make her realise that Klaus wasn’t going to do anything to hurt Stefan so he would make it through this in one piece and with any luck Damon would as well so she knew that she just needed to stay positive and make sure that Damon didn’t give up before his brother got there. It was easier to focus on that than it was to think about what was going on between her and Damon. She had feelings for him, that was something that she had always known deep down but hadn’t wanted to admit, and she knew that she couldn’t open herself up to that if Damon wasn’t going to make it through this. In all honesty it was something that she didn’t even want to think about so she knew that she had to do everything she could in order to make sure that it didn’t come to that. She knew that there were perhaps a lot of people in Mystic Falls who wouldn’t agree with her but she knew that the world would be a much worse place without Damon in it. She knew that she was perhaps a little biased in that respect but as far as she was concerned it was the truth. “We’re all guilty of that at times,” Claire admitted. It was easy to see the world through rose coloured glasses and not realise it until it was already too late so she didn’t want Damon beating himself up about it. “Don’t say that,” she said fiercely as he said that it might not be in his control now. “You’re Damon Salvatore, you’re a fighter. This isn’t going to beat you,” she said, doing her best to make her voice sound even more confident than she actually felt. The truth was that she was terrified of losing him and she knew that she couldn’t let him give up now. “You are such a bad liar,” she challenged as she said that it was Klaus’ fault his memory was bad. She knew that it wasn’t true but even so if he did decide that he wanted to forget all about this when he was feeling better then she knew that she would understand but she definitely wasn’t going to let him get away with remembering some parts of the day but not all of it. “Don’t underestimate him, Stefan won’t let us down,” she said gently. She knew that he wasn’t going to let his brother die and sure enough he showed up shortly after that. She could tell pretty much straight away that Stefan had had to make a deal with Klaus to get the cure from him but she hadn’t expected Stefan to have to agree to leave with Klaus. That was something that she hadn’t wanted to happen but he seemed to be trying to put on a brave face about it. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll pay any price as long as it means you get to live.” Claire could hear the truth in his words and even though she didn’t want him to go she was still relieved to see Damon drink the vial of blood that would apparently cure him. She could see Stefan’s eyes widen in surprise when Damon said that he had never hated him and that he loved him and she saw the smile work its way across her friend’s face. “You could have fooled me. You promised me an eternity of misery, remember?” he asked although she got the feeling that there was still some relief to his words. “I love you too, brother. I hope one day you can forgive me for what I did to you. Look after each other,” he added as he patted Damon on the shoulder. DAMON SALVATORE

No conscience, no regrets, no apologies. Damon had lived his life that way from the minute he’d found Katherine drinking blood from one of the servants on the estate. She’d shown him a different way, one that hadn’t been wrapped around him trying to please a man who never would be. Focus on himself, on what he wanted and damn the rest. Katherine should’ve known how to do it, she was the Queen of it after all. Suckering him and Stefan in, happily walking away once they were both turned and the rest of the town’s vampires were locked up nice and neat in their little tomb, the church burning to ashes with them supposedly inside. He’d spent years mourning her, hating Stefan for condemning him to a life without her, years getting back here and finding out she was in the tomb, minutes killing Bonnie’s Grams to get her out. Just to find out he’d been played all along. Katherine had never loved him and by the time he’d worked that out it had been too late. He had regrets, he had a conscience hit by a sledgehammer for it all and no way to make those apologies in a way that wouldn’t just have him down on his knees with his brain leaking out of his ears. It was too late now wasn’t it? If Stefan didn’t make it, and he half hoped his brother hadn’t damned himself by getting the cure from Klaus, there wouldn’t be any time to make apologies. Bonnie and the rest could go on hating him for what he’d done for that woman. Any chances he’d had gone.
Including the one to finally move on. Shaking his head against the touch of Claire’s hand, Damon knew he’d probably left it all too late, all because he hadn’t been able to see past Katherine’s lies. His eyes fluttered open, focusing on Claire now. ”I was the King of it,” he admitted hoarsely. A cough rattled through him, only dragging the scent of her blood deeper into his senses. ”Tick-tock. I can feel it, Claire. Not long now…” His dark brows drew together, his mouth curving below them as she called bull on what he’d said. ”Never, I’m an amazing liar.” At least to himself. If Stefan did come through there was no way he was going to forget what he’d said, wasn’t going to take it back. Katherine wasn’t gonna get to take his third chance at life away from him the same way she’d taken the first. He’d been about to tell her that Stefan had never let him down, it had always been the other way around but then his brother was there with them. Unlike him Stefan had always come through. Burning eyes fixed on his brother as Damon shook his head. ”You never should’ve had to, this was my fault.” Stefan was paying again for his inability to keep his mouth shut, to avoid pushing people. The blood he drank seemed to burn hotter in his veins for a moment, his eyes shutting, a hiss whispering from his lips as he tried to laugh. ”Think I managed enough for that in just a few years. I was angry, I thought I’d lost her because of you.” In all truth Katherine had never been his and he’d been a fool not to know. Damon lifted a shaking hand, closing it around his brother’s wrist. ”I forgive you. Do the same for me, for all I did.” His eyes ticked from Stefan’s to Claire’s, his other hand reaching out for her as he sank back into the pillows, his eyes slipping shut as he finally drew in an easier breath.

For a long time Claire had been too ashamed to reach out to Stefan and Damon. It had taken her a long time to come to terms with what she had become and even longer to accept that she had done the right thing by compelling her husband and children to move on without her. She hadn’t wanted to stay in London after everything that had happened with Violet and a part of her hadn’t wanted to accept that her human life was over. She had felt worried that she would end up becoming a Ripper the same way that Violet had so she had needed to take some time to get her head around everything that had happened. As it was she had eventually come to realise that just because she had become a vampire it didn’t have to change who she was and now she felt comfortable in her own skin. Ares had a lot to do with that and so did Stefan and Damon. They had all been there for her when she didn’t have anyone else and she didn’t doubt that she would have been lost without her. They kept her tied to her humanity and they made her want to continue being the person that she always had been so she couldn’t help but feel like she would be letting not just herself down but them down too if she gave in and became a monster. As far as she was concerned that just wasn’t an option, she had adopted the animal blood diet that Stefan had told her about pretty quickly after she was turned and she had been sticking to it ever since. She knew that it wasn’t ideal given that it meant she was weaker than those who drank human blood but it was worth it as far as she was concerned. She finally felt comfortable in her own skin and she knew that the last thing she wanted was for her life to be turned upside down again. She had been spending a lot of time with Damon lately and deep down she knew that she felt something for him but she hadn’t wanted to admit it. He was her friend and she knew that they were better off being a part of each other’s lives than they were on their own but the thought of opening up like that again had terrified her and now she knew why. She was doing her best to stay positive and keep Damon’s spirits up but the more time that went by the more she was starting to wonder whether Stefan was going to be able to get the cure for him or not but still she refused to give up hope. “Maybe so but you’ve learned from your mistakes now,” she said, certain that her words were true. Damon had changed a lot during the time that she had been in Mystic Falls and she knew that he wasn’t going to let the same thing happen again. “Don’t say that, I’m not going to lose you now,” she said, a tear rolling down her face as she let her hand rest against Damon’s cheek. “You have to stay with me.” She had told Damon that nothing was going to happen until he got through this but that didn’t mean that the thought of losing him wasn’t still enough to break her heart. He had to get through this, there was no other way. “You wish,” she said, her smile weak as her eyes met his. Claire was beyond relieved when Stefan showed up even though she didn’t want to let herself think about what it would mean just yet. “If it wasn’t to save you I’m sure Klaus would have still found another way to get at me. At least this way you get to live,” Stefan said and Claire understood what he meant. Sometimes things couldn’t be avoided but at least this way he had the chance to make sure that Damon would still be a part of the world. She would have given anything to have Violet live but there hadn’t been any saving her then, at least with Damon it was different. Claire was relieved when Damon drank the blood that Stefan had brought with him and she prayed that it was going to work. “Katherine played us both but over the last few years it has felt like I’ve finally had my brother back. She might have come between us for a while but not now.” That was what Claire had always wanted for the brothers, she had wanted them to move on from what Katherine had done to them and it seemed that they finally had. Claire looked down at Damon’s hands as he gripped Stefan’s wrist and she took Damon’s free hand in her own as he reached out for her too. “Of course I forgive you. Always,” he said, his smile almost sad as he looked down at his brother. “I need to go. Promise me you’ll look after Elena and everyone for me, I’m counting on you.” “We promise. We won’t let you down,” Claire assured him as she pulled Stefan in for a hug. “Thank you. Hopefully I’ll get to see you both again one day.” With that Stefan was gone and Claire looked in the direction he had left for a moment before turning her attention back to Damon. “How are you feeling?”DAMON SALVATORE

None of it should’ve come to this. Sense should’ve had him realizing that Katherine had been playing him even before Giuseppe had shot both him and Stefan. Women like that were always trouble, it was something that Giuseppe had been trying to drum into his sons since before their mother had even died. For once he probably should’ve listened to the bitterness pouring from the man’s mouth but he hadn’t. He’d seen something so much more than he’d had in Katherine, had fooled himself into thinking she’d loved him too and that love had pushed him to monstrous things over the years. This might’ve been the punishment for that, Damon knew. He’d done enough to deserve it but he’d been trying to make amends, had tried to do the right thing since he’d heard about the threat coming for Elena. There were those who would’ve said it wasn’t enough and he still deserved this. Some part of him maybe believed it too but unlike a hundred and fifty years ago, he wanted to live now. Without Katherine, with the constant dark cloud of her finally gone from his life. That had been mostly Claire’s doing, Claire’s and Stefan’s. They’d been the first to see him as something more than who he’d been all that time. For Stefan he’d stuck to the straight and narrow path. For Claire, and OK, for that selfish little part inside of himself that didn’t want Katherine to have been the last he honestly felt something for, he was trying to hold on long enough for Stefan to fall on his sword and get back here with something that was going to make sure he wasn’t going to die from Niklaus’ love bite.
A rattling laugh rolled through Damon, the burn in his throat intensifying as Claire assured him that he’d learned from his mistakes. Most who knew him would’ve said he was incapable of doing that but maybe he had. Maybe this new Damon wasn’t just a pipe dream. ”Learning maybe,” he managed hoarsely before he tried to swallow that heat back. His body was aching with his hunger now, the feel of it gnawing at his very bones. Not saying that the time was running short wasn’t going to make it any less true. Damon shook his head slightly, turning his face into her cheek, cool against the burning hot of his skin. ”I can try, I want to try, but I can’t hold out forever,” he swore in that same strained voice. Time was ticking down one heartbeat at a time, feeling like he was almost out by the time Stefan got there. Then the heat seemed to hold itself back, that hunger easing as he set eyes on his brother. ”He could’ve tried, he would’ve had both of us to stand against him,” he promised but Damon knew that it likely would’ve ended up here if he tried anyway. Damon’s jaw flexed, that usual steel back in his eyes. ”You better be able to get back here too. This isn’t your swan song brother.” Damon tipped the blood back, gulping the life back into his veins. As soon as he could manage it he was getting his brother back. Hissing breath in and out Damon felt the cure burning in his veins. ”Nothing gets between the Salvatore brothers for long.” Not that anybody but the Mikaelsons would call a hundred and fifty years short. As Stefan gave him the forgiveness he had asked for, Damon squeezed his brother’s arm tighter. ”You’re got my word,” he promised hoarsely. ”Watch out for yourself, brother.” There wouldn’t be any hope about it if he had his way, Damon thought as he sank into the pillows. One way or another he would get Stefan back. His lips curled faintly as relaxed into the bed. ”Better,” he managed hoarsely, drawing her down with him. ”The burning’s easing, the hunger’s easing. Are you OK?” Those blue eyes opened, fixing on her in all seriousness.

Right now this all just seemed like nothing more than a bad dream. Claire and Damon had been growing closer ever since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls and something had been developing between the two of them during that time but now it looked like she might just end up losing Damon before they even had the chance to figure out what was really going on. She knew that Damon hadn’t wanted her to call Stefan and tell him what was going on but she knew what it was like to lose a sibling and it wasn’t a pain that she would wish on anyone so she still believed that she had done the right thing. Had she been able to save Violet somehow then she knew that she would have done so in an instant but she hadn’t had that chance. There wasn’t anything at all that she could have done to save her sister but Stefan had the chance to save Damon and she knew that he would take it no matter what the cost ended up being. The two of them had been at odds for such a long time but they loved one another and that was something that she had seen firsthand. Even when he looked like they were in the middle of a war that they couldn’t hope to win they always seemed to band together and get through it and she had to believe that the same was going to prove to be true now. They had been through so much together and she knew that they deserved so much better than the hand that they had been dealt in life but they’d always had each other and she didn’t want that to change now. The poison was spreading throughout Damon’s body, that much was certain, but she had to believe that they still had time and that they would be able to save Damon. He had managed to survive everything that Henry and Samuel had thrown his way and come out of it the other side so she refused to believe that he could be taken down by something as simple as a hybrid bite. Damon was a fighter and she knew that he would make it through this too even if he didn’t believe it. “No one’s perfect,” Claire shrugged as Damon said that he was still learning from his mistakes. She knew that he had done things in the past that he wasn’t proud of but during the time that she had been in town he seemed to have been at least trying to do better and that counted for something as far as she was concerned. She knew that others in town might not necessarily agree but it was clear to her that Damon was trying to be a better person and she was proud of him for that. She knew that it would have been easy for him to give in to the poison and stop fighting but she refused to let him give up and she was glad that he seemed to be doing his best to hold on until Stefan got there. “I know. He’ll be here soon,” she promised, running her hand gently down his cheek as her eyes met his. It was unfair that they’d just now come clean to each other and Damon was on the verge of dying but she refused to give up on him and as Stefan finally arrived it seemed that he wasn’t going to give up on his brother either. “I know but then I really could have lost you so perhaps it’s better this way,” Stefan offered. Claire knew that he was right, if they had fought Klaus then he could have killed one or both of them easily. At least this way they both had the chance to live even if that meant that Stefan had to leave for a while. From the way he was talking it was almost like he wasn’t sure that he would make it back but she knew that he wouldn’t stay away from Elena for too long if he could help it so she hoped that he wouldn’t end up being gone for too long. “I’ll do my best, you have my word,” Stefan assured him. “I have too many people here that I don’t want to lose.” It saddened Claire to know that Stefan would be leaving Elena and all of his friends behind but it wouldn’t be for long, she would use every contact she had to keep track of Stefan while he was on the road and she knew that sooner or later they would find a way to bring him home. Watching as Damon drank the blood that Stefan had brought with him, relief flooded through Claire pretty quickly as the chance in Damon really was noticeable. “And hopefully it won’t again,” Claire said as Damon said that nothing got between the brothers for long. To that Stefan nodded and it seemed that the rift between the two of them had finally been repaired so she couldn’t be happier about that. “I will. You’d better do the same,” Stefan nodded, a rueful smile forming on his face as Damon squeezed his arm tighter before he was gone. With that the two of them were left alone and Claire felt even more relieved as Damon said that he was feeling better. “I’m glad,” she admitted, hopeful that it wouldn’t be too long before he was back to his old self. “I’ll get you another blood bag in a minute, we’ll give it a little more time to work,” she offered before a humourless laugh escaped her lips as Damon asked if she was ok. “You nearly died and your brother has had to leave town with a deranged hybrid but you’re concerned about how I am?”DAMON SALVATORE

Claire’s shrugged comment made him way to laugh. She was right, nobody was and most of those in his life who’d twisted him up the worst had been people who were even further from it than he was. Giuseppe, probably the worst of them all. A man who’d known how to play his children, how to twist his eldest son up until love and fear had been almost interchangeable. Even after their mother had died he’d tried to make the man proud by volunteering to go to war. Maybe Giuseppe had known he’d come cowering back in the end, tail between his legs, an abject failure again. Maybe he’d just been hoping that his eldest son would die out there and he could crow to his cronies about how his son had given his for their cause. If Giuseppe really had been hoping for the latter then he’d been disappointed. It was the first time in his life he’d done what he’d wanted. Damon knew it had been an act of cowardice but their cause hadn’t been his. Death hadn’t been what he’d wanted, then or later when falling in love with Katherine and the freedom she’d offered had supposedly condemned him to an eternity without her. When you’d allowed yourself to go from being twisted up by one evil to another, what chance did you have to escape? Those in town who’d been hurt by his actions since he’d returned would’ve said plenty but they hadn’t been there, they hadn’t known. Just as none of them had known what it was like to be poor Niklaus Mikaelson, cut off from his werewolf side, prevented from being the most powerful thing in the world. The thought that there might’ve been something they had in common had him laughing, until it descended into another rattling cough.
Damon shook his head, throat working against the heat that burned in it as his laughter trailed off. Some were still going to act like they were and he was still going to screw up from time to time, it was just the way it had to be. Blue eyes opened, sweat spiking his lashes as he looked through them. ”Maybe he won’t be perfect,” he managed hoarsely before his brother arrived with the cure. Maybe Stefan wasn’t but he was closer than he was himself. He’d given up his freedom to Niklaus Mikaelson to do this. Sprawled on his back, his body wracked by the fever and his hunger, Damon shook his head. ”This is never gonna be the better s-solution for anything.” All he’d done was pass his suffering on to his brother in his head. He’d sworn to do it when Stefan had forced him to complete the transition but he’d never imagined it would be like this. Damon clapped a hand weakly against his brother’s shoulder. ”You won’t lose them and w-we won’t lose you.” Laughter came broken from his chest as Claire said she hoped nothing would come between them again. ”You always were an optimist,” he breathed and for too long he’d been the opposite. Mr. Worst Case Scenario. Before the strength was back in his body Stefan was gone, his promise ringing in the air, the feel of his fingers still on his arm. Damon turned away from the door, rolling towards Claire as she settled beside him, relief in the laugh he wrung out of her. He shrugged, one hand coming up to cup her cheek now without the tremor that had been rolling through it before. ”Call it the new and improved Damon,” he managed hoarsely. His thumb skimmed her cheekbone, his throat working. ”Stefan was always gonna fall on his sword and get the cure. He was always gonna make sure I didn’t die. You didn’t have to do this though…” Stay by his side while the less evolved bit of his brain made sure that he’d doubted all of that though. The poison so close to his heart and so close to taking him out for good all because he hadn’t been able to stop running his mouth.

Claire had never thought that something like this would happen. She had seen Damon at his best and she had also seen him at his worst but this was something different entirely. This time he didn’t seem like the invincible Damon Salvatore that she had gotten used to, he was vulnerable and it was clear to her that he was in pain. Claire knew how easy it would be for him to give up and after everything he had been through she wouldn’t have blamed him if he had wanted to do just that but for selfish reasons she wanted to make sure that he pulled through this. There had been something between them back in London but back when she never would have owned up to it. Ever since she moved to Mystic Falls that spark seemed to have been reignited and Claire had been doing her best to keep it buried but now it seemed like it wasn’t such a one sided thing after all. In a way it was cruel to find that out now when Damon was sure to die if Stefan didn’t get there in time but Claire knew Stefan and she was certain that there was no way he was going to let his brother die. The two of them had had their differences and she knew that there were times when they’d hurt each other quite badly but at the end of the day they were still brothers and during her time in town she had seen their relationship start to shift so that it was more like the one that they’d had back in London. Back then they had each risked their lives to save the other and even though Claire knew that the cost of Stefan saving Damon would be great she also knew that Stefan could take it and she knew that he would do the right thing regardless of whether it was what Damon wanted or not. It was a relief to see Stefan show up with the cure but Claire knew what it meant. He’d made a deal with Klaus and now the two of them were going to have to leave Mystic Falls for a while. Claire could see it in her friend’s eyes that he wasn’t sure that he would be able to come back but she was determined to make it happen no matter what. Stefan had managed to get the cure for the hybrid bite and in doing so he had already saved Damon’s life. Stefan had built a life for himself in Mystic Falls and it was one that there wasn’t a doubt in her mind that he had to return to. Watching him go she couldn’t deny that she felt bad for calling him but she knew that she would have done the same for Violet if it was her sister that was dying and underneath it all she wouldn’t have been surprised if Damon would have done the same for Stefan as well. “Well, I like the new and improved Damon,” Claire said, a smile working its way across her face as she leaned into his touch. “You’re looking better already.” She wouldn’t be surprised if the version of Damon that she had seen that day stayed with her, she wasn’t used to seeing him so vulnerable but he had been honest with her that day and she knew that that was never going to be a bad thing. “I think you’re right but he’ll be back, we’ll make sure of it,” she said before feeling her expression soften as Damon spoke once more. “You really think I would have let you go through this alone?” she asked, completely astounded by even the thought of doing such a thing. “I thought you knew me better than that.”DAMON SALVATORE

This should’ve been a warning – against running his mouth off and pissing people off to the point where they’d quite happily see him dead, that there was a chance he really would lose his brother someday, against letting his stinging pride and cracked heart stop him from moving on. He’d been tethered to the past for over a hundred years, not letting go on those things that had twisted up his human life. He wasn’t human anymore, today had proved that as much as anything else. Damon knew he had the time now to change things, thanks to Stefan and the temporary sacrifice his brother had made.
Staring into Claire’s eyes, Klaus’ blood slowly eradicating the poison that had been pulsing through his veins Damon knew that this was the impetus he needed to take. He had to put Katherine behind him permanent, set aside what Giuseppe had done to him. Make it all the past and work on a future in this town, at least as long as that could last.
At the rate things were going here that might not be too long but by the time things started to swallow them all up he’d be way beyond where he had been. With just those tenuous connections to the past that he’d given Claire a view of inside of his head. The moments that had really mattered, the ones that had kept his switch on all this time even if few had believed it was possible.
Drawing in a slow breath, Damon let it out in a huff of laughter. He shook his head, his thumb trailing from her cheekbone, down to the corner of Claire’s mouth and back up again. ”Give him a while, you might change your mind about him,” he murmured. If she hadn’t after a century, chances were it would take more than him revealing that he hadn’t changed all that much to make it happen now. That was the thing with these long held feelings, they were hard to rid yourself of, if you ever did want to. They strengthened themselves sometimes though, creeping up on you when you weren’t looking. It had happened this time, slipping through his veins like the poison that had almost killed him this time.
Clearing his throat, Damon twisted his other arm, looking at the spot where Niklaus had torn his teeth through the pale flesh. The black streaks had faded almost all the way back to it now, the angry red wound looking half healed already. In an hour nobody would ever know it had happened, except the two of them, the memory of the way he’d been indelibly marked on their memories. And Stefan’s. Damon’s jaw flexed as blue eyes skimmed back up to her velveteen ones. ”Thanks to you and Stefan.” He shook his head, trying to hold onto Claire’s assurances. ”We’ll find him, drag him back here even if it means Klaus spends the next century sulking.” At her question, the corner of his mouth kicked up. ”Most people in town would’ve done.” Claire wasn’t them though and he knew it. ”Oh I do,” he promised, leaning in to touch his lips to her forehead. ”Well enough to know that you’ll grab me something to eat since my appetite’s coming back with my good looks.” The hunger had lost its burning edge but it was still there beneath the exhaustion.
