When she was growing up family had always meant the world to Claire and it had been no exception when she and Violet had moved to London together so that they could pursue their dreams. It had been a big step leaving their dad behind but at the end of the day he had always supported their decisions and he hadn’t wanted to be the one to stand in the way of the two of them achieving what they had always wanted. Claire had never known just how much that one decision to leave her dad behind would end up changing not just her life but also Violet’s forever and she knew that she never could have foreseen the loss of her sister. She had been forced to make an impossible decision, she’d had to choose between saving Stefan who had become such a good friend to her or letting her sister who had become a Ripper live but even now she was certain that she had made the right decision. She knew that Stefan had a darkness in him and that he too had a Ripper side but she had looked into the eyes of her sister in the moments before her death and the Violet she had grown up with had been completely gone. There had been no light in her eyes at all, the acts that Samuel had forced her to commit had chipped away at her very soul until there was nothing at all left and Claire knew that if the roles had been reversed then she wouldn’t have wanted Violet to let her live out her life that way. The pain of losing her sister had been immense and even now Claire still missed her but back then there just hadn’t been any other way. With Damon it was different. He was digging his heels in the way he always did but there was a chance that he could be saved and she knew that there was no way that she could do as he had asked and keep Stefan in the dark. If there was a way for her to have saved Violet then she would have done it without any questions asked and she was certain that Stefan would feel the same way. No matter what had happened between him and Damon over the years they were still brothers and she knew just how much Damon meant to Stefan so she knew that he had a right to know. Of course convincing Damon of that would be impossible considering that his mind was made up so she knew better than to waste her breath on that. As he spoke again, however she couldn’t help but smile back at him. “You can call me whatever you like, I’ve always had a habit of getting you to open up eventually,” she said, her tone light as she looked over at him. Perhaps it was the fact that they had both grown up as the older sibling in the family that made it easy to relate to Damon but after everything she had been through she had become good at getting to the truth and he was no exception no matter how hard he tried to fight it. Sooner or later he always opened up and a part of her suspected that perhaps it was because he needed someone to open up to the same way everyone did but either way she was glad that he seemed to be able to talk to her when he needed to. “I’m sorry but I don’t believe that for a minute,” Claire shrugged as Damon tried to convince her that he had lost his phone. She knew him well enough by now to know that it was just a ploy to try and get hold of her phone so that he could get rid of it and stop her from calling Stefan and telling him what was going on and she wasn’t going to fall for it. She understood that Damon wanted to protect his brother from Klaus and what might happen if Stefan made a deal with him but at the end of the day it was Damon’s life that was on the line and that wasn’t something that could be ignored. If there was something she could do in order to save him then she knew that she would do it but it seemed that Klaus had set his sights on Stefan so she knew that she just had to trust that he would be able to find a way to save his brother. “I am when I need to be and I’m not giving up on you or on whatever it is that is going on here,” she assured him. She knew that now wasn’t the right time to be talking about it, after all for all she knew Damon might only have been saying that because he was ill, and she knew that if he still felt something when this was all over then they could talk about it but not before. “What can I say, I always knew my looks and charm had an effect on you,” she joked, a smile touching her lips once more albeit a slightly strained one as she supported Damon as best she could. Even drinking animal blood she was more than strong enough to support his weight but while they were in the car it had been easy to ignore just how much he seemed to have deteriorated in such a short space of time. Now it was that much more evident and she couldn’t deny that that scared her. As Damon spoke again, Claire couldn’t help but laugh as she opened the front door and helped him into the house. “Play your cards right and I might take you up on that offer when you’re feeling better.”DAMON SALVATORE

A hundred and fifty years of pining over Katherine had been a waste of time. There’d been a few shining moments in all of those decades but the constant drive to free Katherine from her tomb and his need to make Stefan’s life a misery hadn’t provided a single one of them. He’d lived for those little moments of success but looking back from what seemed like it was going to be the end of the line Damon was feeling more than a little regret. Woulda shoulda coulda. Much as he should’ve found another way to make the most of what most would’ve seen as a blessing of more life, he knew he couldn’t turn the clock back. The past was what it was, Katherine’s betrayal was a lesson that had him turning things around, his rocky road with Stefan had led them back to a point they should’ve been at all those years back, no thanks to the said duplicitous harpy, he had Claire back in his life well after she was meant to have died a human death at a ripe old age. No amount of wishing was going to take him back to change any of that. And in his, arguably learned position, there wasn’t going to be anything to change his death now. Claire could hope for Stefan to wrangle some cure all she liked but the wise Damon, the one that got drowned out all to often by the jerk Damon, was already damn sure that the future was set in stone. He was heading back home to die, hopefully without taking anybody else with him.
Trying to tell Claire she was wasting her breath was getting him nowhere. She was sure that this was all a cover up, that he didn’t really plan on dying, that he’d come to her with the hoping of getting his worthless ass saved. Maybe there was a tiny part of him that wanted that, a part that saw opportunities to do something different in the next year, let alone the next hundred and fifty of them, but the other part was just too cowardly to do this alone. A huff of humour puffed out as he let his lips curve a little further. ”Like a clam shucker with a blade,” he muttered low. This clam was rotting from the inside out and Stefan would do just about anything to stop that, her too. He lifted a hand that trembled faintly, wiggled his fingers at her plaintively. ”Don’t stop being Little Miss Pollyanna Sunshine now,” Damon crooned, knowing he had no chance of getting the phone. She knew him too well and they both knew it. It was inevitable now, Stefan was going to hear what was going on and if he could his brother would swap himself for a cure. ”Whether you need to be or not you’re glass spilling over. I know no matter what I say you won’t be walking out of here.” She was too much like Stefan in that way, they would stick there until the bitter end, watching him fall apart. A water laugh rolled out as he held on to her. ”And there I was thinking it was just the fact that you’re always turning up to save my fantastic ass,” he shot back. The first time she’d done it, Katherine still had her claws in his heart, this time it was free and healing over, just in time for Niklaus Mikaelson to turn it into black goo in his chest. Damon tilted his head as he dragged himself towards the stairs. ”Talk about dangling a carrot in front of a dying man’s nose. Is that your way of making sure I don’t fight you when you go phoning Stefan to tell him to exchange himself for my life? It’s a low blow Florence.” But one he couldn’t drum up the enthusiasm to fight against so hard now. Hauling himself up the last stair, Damon headed straight for his bedroom, muscling the door open before he practically threw himself inside to drop face down on his bed.

It had taken Claire such a long time to accept what she had become and who she was after everything that she had been through and she regretted that now. Had she accepted it sooner then perhaps she would have stuck to the plan and met up with Stefan and Damon like they had arranged but she had been too ashamed. After having no choice but to leave her family behind she hadn’t wanted to change the way that two of the people who still remembered what she was like as a human thought of her. It seemed silly now to keep her distance for that reason but becoming a vampire wasn’t something that she had ever wanted for herself and if she was honest she had been terrified of going down the same dark path that her sister Violet had been dragged down. She knew that just because her sister had become a Ripper that didn’t mean that she was doomed to become one too, after all Stefan was one too while Damon seemed in control of his bloodlust, but the worry had been there at the back of her mind and she had needed time to come to terms with it all. She hadn’t planned on running into the Salvatores while she was in Mystic Falls after taking up the job there but she had quickly found herself feeling glad that she had done. They were the only two faces from her past that she had left in her life and she knew that she didn’t want to lose either of them. With everything that they had been through together they had become family to her and she knew that she just couldn’t stand to lose anyone else she thought of that way. Now Damon was dying and even though she was doing her best to put on a brave face and stay optimistic for him, deep down she was terrified. She and Stefan had struck up a friendship pretty much straight away when they met but when it came to Damon she had often found herself butting heads with the elder Salvatore. She knew that it was because they were alike in some ways but there had always been something more to it than that, something that she hadn’t felt ready to acknowledge with everything that had been going on while they were in London. Now things were different but the way she felt about him hadn’t changed and she knew that she would fight to keep him with them no matter what. Stefan, she was certain, would feel the same and if there was anything she could do in order to stop him having to sacrifice himself so that Damon could live then she would do it in an instant but right now she knew she just needed to tell him what was going on. “You should be used to it by now,” Claire said, a smile touching her lips as she glanced over at Damon. No matter how hard he had tried to hide it she had always been able to see the person he was underneath all the bravado and that hadn’t changed. “You’re right, I’m not going to leave you,” she nodded. “You and Stefan saved my life back in London and I refuse to lose anyone else,” she said, her tone certain as she spoke. She had already lost her sister, her husband and her children, she knew that she wasn’t going to lose Damon too and she refused to let Stefan lose his brother the way she had lost Violet. “That too. I had to repay the favour somehow,” she said, a half smile tugging at the corner of her mouth as she supported Damon’s weight as best she could as they headed inside. As Damon spoke again, Claire’s expression turned serious for a moment. “Hopefully it won’t come to that,” she said even though deep down she knew that it would. If the roles were reversed and it was Violet who was dying from a werewolf bite then she knew that she would give herself up in an instant to save her though and she knew Stefan well enough that he would do the same for Damon. “Anyway, call it an incentive. If you want to see where this could go then you need to fight to stay with me. Don’t give up,” she said, almost pleading with him as she helped him over to the bed and turned him over after he threw himself down onto it. “Can I get you anything?”DAMON SALVATORE

There was a pretty big difference between sadism and masochism. Most knew it and would’ve pegged Damon Salvatore as the former, getting his kicks by making those around him suffer. Maybe he’d thrown everything he had into making himself seem that way at times, to get what would ease the suffering of his masochistic little heart but beneath the surface, that Damon who shot himself in the foot every time trying to find the thing that would fill that hollow inside of him ruled. Only a masochist would’ve come crawling back into a town where everybody and their mother knew that he’d had his heart not only broken but crushed into powder by Katherine Pierce. Only a masochist would’ve traipsed out into the woods in search of Matt Choir Boy Donovan, knowing that not a single one of them would’ve thought he’d done it out of the goodness in his black and shrivelled little heart. He’d always put himself a spot where everybody around him would end up piling on the disappointment. It had all started with Giuseppe and finally realising his mistake, it should’ve ended with Katherine but the universe had other plans. His return home hadn’t been all rainbows and unicorns, it had been a never ending streak of trouble that’d culminated with him getting himself bitten by the Original hybrid. Now he was gonna die, maybe breaking Claire’s heart with it, if what had been brewing between them for the last century wasn’t an entirely one sided kinda interest. Even without it he could picture her at his funeral, the only one shedding a tear over his coffin, barring Stefan of course, if his brother wasn’t still off playing Klaus’ puppet. Claire had always seen the side of him he’d worked his pretty little ass off to hide.
And she was right, he should’ve been used to it by now. Maybe a part of him was, the part that had known exactly what was going to happen when got back to the station and found him slowly succumbing to Klaus’ little parting gift. Damon lifted his bitten arm, tapped two fingers against his heart as he mustered up a wistful smile. ”Oh I am, it’s one of the things I’ve come to love about being around you, that feeling like I’m being pried apart at the seams.” Or rather, that she was opening up some part of him that rarely got to see the light of day. That bit desperately wanted her there at the end now, holding on to his hand while he made sure that Klaus didn’t get his claws into his brother again. ”That’s a sweet sentiment,” he told her dryly, his gaze returning to the road. ”But none of us can guarantee that. Loss is a natural part of life, we can’t fight it anymore than we can stop the sun coming up.” You could try until you were blue in the face but at the end of the day people were going to die, especially in a town like this. He’d argued against Claire trying to save his ass until he was almost that particular shade but she wouldn’t back down. Damon’s brows drew together as she dragged his ass inside. ”I think you’re getting the score wrong here Sweet Charity, this is twice you’ve done this for me. I owe you big time, not the other way around.” But still he was letting her do just that. He winged a brow at her. ”You’re hoping I won’t fight you doing it or you’re hoping it won’t come to Stefan haven’t to put me above himself?” Cause that was exactly what his brother was going to do. Damon knew it as he dropped near bonelessly onto his bed. He rolled slowly, staring up at her from the bed. ”If you don’t want me giving up, you can stay here. Make sure I don’t go doing anything stupid. You were always good at that.” He put on his best pleading puppy eyed look, patting the mattress beside him.

Her job was something that Claire was good at, she could throw herself into her work with Ares and forget about everything else but when it came to dealing with what Damon was going through now the truth was that Claire had no idea how to do it. A werewolf bite was fatal to a vampire, that was something that they had found out a while ago, but now that Damon was the one afflicted by a bite she knew that they just had to find a way to cure it. She didn’t even know if it was possible but she didn’t doubt that if anyone was able to find out then it would be Stefan. She knew that he had been made to forget his time with Klaus when the two of them had met in Chicago and he had been made to forget Rebekah as well but if there was anyone that Klaus would be honest with about a cure then she knew that it would be Stefan. No matter what had happened in the past it was clear that Klaus still thought of Stefan as his friend and that was something that she hoped they would be able to use to their advantage this time around. Back when she first met the Salvatore brothers it was clear that the two of them had their differences but even back then they were willing to die for one another. She had tried her best to repair what was broken between the two of them but whenever she saw them together now she knew that the only thing that could really heal those wounds was time and she hoped that they would continue to have that. She knew what it was like to lose a sibling, she had been the one to take Violet’s life since it was the only way that she had been able to stop her sister from killing Stefan but that guilt was something that she still carried around with her even now and she knew that Stefan would feel exactly the same if he didn’t at least do everything in his power to try and save the only family that he had left. Of course Damon wasn’t going to make it easy for her to call Stefan and let him know what was going on but she knew that she would find a way, she had to. “I know you’ll never admit it but even you need someone you can open up to sometimes,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at Damon. They had known each other for such a long time and even though decades had passed after they parted ways in London before their paths crossed again she was still able to read him like an open book. He didn’t have to hide anything when he was with her and she was pretty sure that that wasn’t something that he was used to but it was always good to have someone to talk to now and then. “Maybe not but we can try. Personally I think a world with Damon Salvatore in it is something worth fighting for,” Claire shrugged as she helped him inside. Normally the tone between the two of them was kept light and playful but the truth was that now she was scared. Damon meant a lot to her, more than she was willing to admit to herself let alone to anyone else, and the thought of a world without him in it wasn’t something that she even wanted to consider. He might not have always done the right thing throughout the course of his life but he was a good person and he genuinely cared about the people in his life no matter how hard he tried to hide it sometimes and even if he didn’t believe it she knew that he was someone who was worth fighting for. “You’re right, you do owe me one so you’d better stick around long enough for me to collect,” she warned. For such a long time Claire had done her best to stay away from anyone who might end up getting close to her but Damon had always had a habit of getting under her skin. Meeting Damon and Stefan had quite simply changed her life forever and she knew that she didn’t want to lose that again. She had kept her distance from them for such a long time because she had felt ashamed of what she had become but neither of them had judged her and now it felt like she was about to lose Damon again far too soon. She knew that she didn’t really have any right to feel that way but she couldn’t help it and she knew that she would do whatever she had to in order to keep him with them. “Both. If you try and fight me you’ll lose so you might as well save your strength because I’m going to call Stefan anyway. Whatever happens next we’ll deal with it together,” she assured him. She knew that if Violet was the one afflicted with ah werewolf bite then she would give up herself in an instant to save her sister but she hoped that Stefan wouldn’t have to do that. Either way, though, he deserved the chance to try and save his brother and she knew that she couldn’t be the one to take that away from him. “I will but first I have a call to make,” she said before moving out of the room before Damon could protest, dialling Stefan’s number as she did so. It didn’t take her long to fill him in and no sooner had she hung up than she made her way back to Damon’s room and moved so that she was sitting next to him before taking her hand in his. “I know you didn’t want me to tell him but he had a right to know. He loves you,” she assured him as she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “He promised to find the cure so you just have to hold on long enough for it to get here.”DAMON SALVATORE

If Damon Salvatore had ever been an open book it had been before Giuseppe had taught him with that sanctimonious voice and his belt that he needed a thicker skin, that he needed to hide that vulnerable kid who was terrified of his father. That thicker skin had grown pretty damn rapidly, although his father was the one person who could always grate it thin. Hide what was going on beneath the surface with a mouth that wouldn’t quit and an attitude that kept most at arm’s length and you didn’t have to worry about petty little things like disappointing the people you were closest to. Of course, a thick skin and an intention to keep people from peering beneath that surface hadn’t been the only reason he’d kept Claire at a heart’s distance in London. Katherine had still had her clawed little fingers around his, a claim on him from the tomb he’d believed her holed up in for over a century. More fool him. By the time he’d learned the truth that particular opportunity had been long gone, seemingly lost to the mists of time and death. Now it looked like the latter was playing anti-matchmaker again. Niklaus had stepped in this time, growing tired enough of his mouth and his interference and wanting his Thelma and Louise type road trip with Stefan enough to have put that long dormant puppy side of his to good use. Damon knew that in his this case it had been his timing that had sucked, his heel dragging and holding people at arm’s length coming back to bite him in the ass just as hard as Klaus had sunk those fangs into his arm.
All he needed now was for Stefan to give up his own freedom and become the one thing he knew his brother hated more than anything else. ”You’re right, I’ll never admit it,” Damon said breezily. Not even now when that part of him did desperately want it. But he wasn’t going to do it to her. Snorting softly, Damon tried to keep putting one foot in front of the other as they made their way into the house. ”You might wanna scream that from the rooftops around here after. There’s a hell of a lot of people who’d argue tooth and nail that it’s not worth fighting for at all.” He wasn’t Stefan, he hadn’t exactly endeared himself here. Except to Stefan and Claire. Both of them were owed more than he thought he’d ever be able to give. Frowning, Damon glanced down into Claire’s eyes. ”It’s cruel. You know that? Holding a debt over a dying man’s head?” The truth was that maybe that was all that was going to get him through this, arm bending and the sort of force that he couldn’t toss aside with a witty comment. Claire was small but damn mighty and that fight in her wasn’t going to stop. ”An hour ago I would’ve tried,” Damon admitted with a sigh. Now if she wanted she could’ve tossed him over her shoulder and he wouldn’t have had enough energy to do more than admire the view. She might let him go to the weak as a kitten stage first but one way or another she was calling Stefan. The arm around her waist tightened for a moment, his heart lurching up into his throat. It remained there as she moved out of the room. Ears straining more than they should’ve done he heard Claire make the call and knew that Stefan was gonna go and strike the deal he hadn’t wanted him making. Shifting on the bed, Damon studied Claire’s face as she took his hand. ”I knew what he was going to do the minute you told him. Right to know or not he’s gonna go straight out and do something stupid for someone who doesn’t deserve it. I don’t know what the two of you see that other people can’t.” Tugging at the hand holding his, Damon urged Claire to stretch out beside him. His throat worked, the heat in his veins seeming to parch hi, to burn him up from the inside out.

Claire had learned a long time ago that no vampire was unstoppable, she had seen that when she had killed Violet and when Henry and Samuel had died. Even after they had parted ways and she hadn’t known what had come of Stefan and Damon she had still felt better believing that her friends were out there in the world somewhere. She had seen Damon when he was vulnerable before after he was captured by the two vampires who had been determined to make him and Stefan pay but this was something else entirely. Back then she and Stefan had been determined to save him and they had managed it but now even though she was doing her best to remain positive she wasn’t sure whether they were going to be able to help Damon this time. She refused to give up but with the more time that went on he was starting to look worse and she couldn’t deny that she was worried. She needed to call Stefan as quickly as she could but she needed to make sure that Damon was settled first. Had it been Violet who had been bitten and was suffering like this then she knew that she would have done whatever she’d had to in order to save her sister and she didn’t doubt that Stefan would feel the same way about Damon. No matter what happened or how often siblings fought at the end of the day they were still bonded by blood and that was something that nothing could tear apart. She had seen it with Damon and Stefan before, even when they had been at each other’s throats they had still been prepared to die for one another so she knew that she had to give Stefan the choice because if she didn’t then she was certain that he would never be able to forgive her. She knew that it wasn’t what Damon wanted but then again if he had just wanted to slip away without making a fuss then she honestly believed that he wouldn’t have sought her out that day. She was prepared to fight to keep him with her and she knew that Stefan would do the same even if Damon didn’t think that he was worth it. “I know you won’t but I don’t need you to, I’ll be here for you anyway,” Claire assured him. Damon had done so much for her during the time they had known each other and the day that they had run into each other in the Grill he had made her realise that it was about time that she started letting people in again. For far too long she had existed rather than living her life properly and she knew that that was a waste. Most of the people she loved were gone but she still had Stefan, Damon and Ares and as far as she was concerned they were worth living for. As he spoke again, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “I don’t care what anyone else thinks, you’ve always meant a lot to me,” she shrugged. The two of them had butted heads a lot in the beginning and they still did sometimes even now but at the end of the day Damon had helped Violet save her and after that he had become a good friend to her and that was something that she wasn’t ready to let go of, not when she finally had him back in her life again. If she was honest there was more to it than that but that was something that she knew she wouldn’t be ready to explore until Damon was back to his normal self. She had already lost too many people she loved to truly open her heart to him only to end up losing him as well. “You call it cruel, I call it incentive. With all this talk about giving up I think you need something to fight for,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at him once more. She could see that Damon was struggling and perhaps it was selfish trying to get him to hold on for as long as possible but she wasn’t ready to give up on him and she would do whatever she had to in order to make sure that he didn’t give up either. As Damon said that an hour ago he would have tried to fight her, Claire patted his hand gently. “I know,” she nodded, wrapping her arms around him for a moment as his arm tightened around her waist before forcing herself to get to her feet. She didn’t want to leave him but if there was any way that Damon was going to stay with them then she knew that she needed to talk to Stefan. The call went just as Claire had thought that it would and it wasn’t long before Stefan was telling her that he would do whatever he had to in order to get the cure for Damon. Just the thought of what he might have to do was enough to make her heart ache but she knew that if Stefan did end up losing himself for a while then she and the others would bring him back to them without question. “You don’t have to see it, we both know you’re worth doing anything for,” she assured him, curling up next to him and wrapping her arm around his chest as her head came to rest against his shoulder. “How are you feeling? Do you need me to get you anything?”DAMON SALVATORE

There wasn’t a single soul walking the earth who didn’t have a vulnerability. The Mikaelsons might’ve come closest to being impervious to just about everything but even Klaus Mikaelson had a soft spot. Damon knew he would’ve been capable of poking at it had the Original hybrid hung around long enough after that bite, taking swipes over the guy’s parentage and the step father who’d hated him enough to make his life a living misery, something that he would’ve hated to admit the two of them almost had in common, but Niklaus hadn’t given him the opportunity. The hybrid had swanned away, so sure that this little part of his plan would be as successful as the ritual. Tough luck buddy. The first might’ve given Klaus back his werewolf side but it hadn’t given him the hybrid army of loyal sycophants he’d been hoping for. His own brother had stopped that from happening, or at least that was the way it had seemed, bringing back the three people who’d been slaughtered. It was a scheme Katherine had tried to help orchestrate, although from the rumour going around town, that had been foiled just as much as everything else, Mason Lockwood hadn’t been willing to follow Katherine here and throw himself on the pyre, so to speak, just to get her free of Klaus Mikaelson once and for all. They were all still at the hybrid’s mercy, all trying to cling on to life with their nails and claws dug in. His own had been losing their grip but Damon knew that Claire was about to let that happen. If he was vulnerable then she’d protect him, she’d do what he hadn’t been able to and despite his arguments against it, some part of him now wanted his brother to save him from this slow death that was burning its way through his veins.
Damon’s throat worked dryly as Claire took his admission that he wouldn’t ever say he needed to someone to open up to in her stride. Breezy words or not they’d been honest and he sought her hand out now, squeezing it to avoid having to tear a thank you free. He shook his head as he kept his feet under him. ”You never did care what anybody thought. It’s one of the things I’ve always admired about you.” It was an echo of something inside of himself that he’d always prided himself on. Most didn’t care to look deep enough to see anything but pride in him but Claire had always had some uncanny ability to see straight through his bull. That wasn’t the reason he’d found himself starting to see her in another light but it was a reason for him to fight to see where all of this could go now. ”Being an incentive doesn’t mean it’s not cruel. You’re dangling this in front of a dying man’s face,” he warned. If Claire had her way and kept him fighting long enough for Stefan to get here, then it was going to be a whole different ball game and she knew it. Sucking in a breath that seemed to make his chest hurt more than it had five minutes ago, Damon held on to Claire harder as she wrapped her arms around him. ”I might be able to put one last burst of effort into it,” he told her, a faint teasing note to his voice. There was no fight in him as Claire left the room to make the call to Stefan. He knew that Stefan was going to do whatever it would take and he’d have to deal with the consequences later. Pulling Claire down beside him, Damon rolled towards her slightly, the arm that wasn’t burning like acid had been poured into his veins curling around her waist. ”If I had the energy I’d argue about what I was worth but I need it for something other than bashing my head against a brick wall.” Damon’s shoulders shrugged slightly, his eyes slipping shut for a moment. ”I don’t need anything but you right now,” he promised. ”I can feel it burning its way closer to my heart. Feels like it’s roasting me from the inside out.” It was igniting his hunger despite the pain, the slippery control he’d always had over it feeling like it was gradually falling through his fingers like water.

Claire’s life hadn’t turned out the way she had thought it would, that much was true, but at the end of the day it hadn’t all been bad. She had lost her sister and she’d had to leave her husband and children behind but she had been able to experience more of the world than she otherwise would have been able to and she had lived through more than most people couldn’t even begin to imagine. While it was true that she never would have chosen to become a vampire and that was the way she still felt about it now the things she had been through had turned her into the person she was today. Losing her family had made her start to question everything for a while and for a long time she had cut herself off from everyone around her but there had been a few people who had managed to get through the defences she had built around her heart and now she was grateful to them for that. She would be lying if she said that she wasn’t still scared of opening herself up to love again only to lose it like she had done in the past but she also knew that she hadn’t really been living her life before she arrived in Mystic Falls. She had been existing but she had stopped herself from truly becoming a part of the world around her by cutting herself off from everyone and she didn’t want to be like that any longer. Reuniting with Damon and Ares had reminded her that it was a good thing to have people in her life that she cared about and she knew that the last thing she wanted was to end up going back to the way things used to be by shutting everyone out again. She had made a few other friends along the way, mostly with people who were a part of the supernatural world the same way that she was, but she had ended up parting ways with all of them in the end and this time she wanted things to be different and she was determined to make them so. It was easy to take what Damon said about never admitting when he needed someone to open up to in her stride and Claire offered him a smile as he squeezed her hand. She knew Damon better than even he would probably want to admit and she was determined to be there for him when he needed her now that she finally had the chance to do so. It had been shame that had kept her from going to meet Stefan after she became a vampire and she knew now that she had been wrong to feel that way. She hadn’t asked to be turned but it had happened and she knew now that all she could do was try and make the best of it. She hoped that that would include being able to see where things were going to go with Damon but only time would tell on that front. “I wasn’t always like this, when I was younger I always worried about how Violet saw me and when I moved to London I wanted to impress everyone but I realised that there wasn’t any point in trying to do that. If we care too much about what other people think it just makes us miserable,” she shrugged. She was much happier just being herself and no matter how cheesy it might sound the people who really mattered to her accepted her for that. “You might be dying but you’re not dead yet and if it keeps you fighting then it’s worth it,” Claire admitted. She hated doing it but she knew that she had to because otherwise there was every chance that Damon would just give up altogether and she would end up losing him. In a way she knew that she was also trying to protect her heart because she hoped that by not admitting even to herself how she truly felt about Damon then it would be easier if Stefan wasn’t able to get the cure but deep down she knew that she was only fooling herself and her resolve was waning. If Damon did die without knowing how she really felt about him then she knew that she would have to live with that regret for the rest of her life but she honestly hoped that it wouldn’t come to that. “At least we’re on the same page with that,” Claire said, a smile touching her lips as she settled herself against him. It was enough to make Claire’s heart ache as Damon explained about the pain he was in and she studied him carefully for a moment as she looked up at him. “You need to hang in there,” she breathed as she reached up and let her hand run lightly down his cheek. “What if I tried to take us into one of your memories for a while?” she suggested, hoping that that would at least help ease the pain a little. Decades of lashing out, taking every ounce of pain and anger out on Stefan and anybody else who happened to tick him off or get in the way of what he wanted, and fate hadn’t taken a second glance at him. Fast forward all those years and suddenly it looked like karma was catching up on him. First the revelation over what Katherine had actually been up to all these years, that she’d gone on to manipulate poor little Mason Lockwood into sleeping with her before she’d tried screwing him over too, then that one, brief, shining, moment when it had looked like maybe there was something for him beyond the woman who’d shredded his heart for him. Now karma had a vested interest in Damon Salvatore’s life. It hadn’t just given him a little kick in the pants to teach him the error of his ways. It had sent in the ninjas, slicing and dicing with surgical precision to make not just his life a misery but Claire’s and Stefan’s too. Damon would’ve admitted that maybe he was deserving of some of this but honestly, what had their crimes been? The things they’d done that might’ve weighed against them had been regretted, amends made as far as both of them could’ve managed it. Stefan might’ve slaughtered his way across the country under the unrelenting grip out of his blood lust but when Stefan was on the veggie vamp diet guilt at him every damn day. Saving Elena’s life, bringing together his strays and orphans under the Boarding House, it all had to be balancing those scales. Same with Claire, working in that damn ugly uniform every day, doing her best for the people in this town and now, both of them were going to suffer for him. If there was one thing that was going to eat him up with regret when he was stuck on the other side of whatever the hell there was out there, probably burning for an eternity down there, it was that – that he had drawn both of them into this and they were going to be hurting … because of him.
Who said Damon Salvatore didn’t have a heart. The way it was pounding like a jack hammer in his chest right now, driving the poison ever closer to it and his brain was at the very least proof of that. Clinging to Claire’s hand like a lifeline Damon knew that could see it, had been able to see it since long before he’d even wanted to admit that he had one. Clearing his throat, Damon tried to make some sort of sound of doubt but he suspected it came out far more like a death rattle. ”You didn’t have to worry about her, she loved her big sister for who she saw,” he promised. He could understand wanting to impress everybody though, had spent years trying to do that with his father before he’d understood that same point. Managing a laugh, Damon cast his mind back to Giuseppe now. ”Where were you when I was really 21?” he asked. She hadn’t even been born then but by the time he’d met her and Violet Claire was already far wiser than he was. Claire was his cheerleader through this, his drill sergeant, pushing him with painful honesty. ”I think you’ll find I’ve been dead one hell of a long time…” Dead but not down. Thanks to her and Stefan he was still fighting. Sighing softly, Damon touched his lips to her brow. ”We always seem to be.” But they’d never been in a place where they could act on it. And thanks to Klaus, they still weren’t. At the rate the poison felt like it was spreading they might never get to that place. He fought for each breath, sucking it in, feeling it burn in his chest as he opened his eyes to find Claire looking up at him. ”I’m trying,” he promised hoarsely. Damon turned his face into the touch of her hand, grimacing faintly as the poison seemed to burn hotter for a moment. The nod was barely perceptible this time, his eyes slipping shut for a while. ”There are some real stunners in there. Some have this hot brunette in them, she can be a real hardass, but she’s incredible all the same.” Brow furrowing, Damon burrowed in closer, his hands flattening on her back, holding tight.

Ever since Damon showed up at the station Claire liked to think that she had been doing a pretty good job of making out that she knew what she was doing but the truth was that she was making it up as she went along. She hated knowing that the guy she had feelings for was fading away right in front of her eyes but aside from calling Stefan and trying to make Damon as comfortable as possible and give him as many reasons to keep fighting as he could then she really didn’t know what else she could do. The thought of losing Damon terrified her but that was exactly what she was being faced with and she knew that she would do whatever she had to in order to get him to hold on long enough. He already looked worse than he had when he’d arrived at the station but she refused to give up on him and she hoped that he wouldn’t give up either. He had done so well to keep fighting so far and she was counting on that Salvatore fighting spirit to keep him holding on now. She had seen it back in London when he and Stefan had saved her from Henry and Samuel and she had seen it countless times since then. The people in Mystic Falls might have seen the cold and uncaring Damon that he had wanted them to see but she knew better and the Damon that she knew was one that was definitely worth fighting for so she knew that nothing was going to stop her from doing just that. Violet, her husband, children and the rest of her family had all died a long time ago but now she had people like Damon, Stefan and Ares in her life again and they had all become her family and she refused to lose one of them again. “I always worried about her especially after our mum died. After that I was the only one there to look after her while dad worked to support us until he remarried,” Claire explained. She had never gone into that much detail about her past with Damon before but this time she knew that there wasn’t any point in holding anything back. Violet had been her younger sister and best friend and even though Claire had always had a good relationship with their dad while she was growing up he’d had to work even harder to provide for them after their mum died so Claire had had no choice but to step up and be there for Violet as much as she could. Her dad had tried to make sure that she’d still had a childhood where possible but she’d still had to try and juggle that with becoming the lady of the house as had been expected of her in the society she had grown up in and it had been difficult to say the least. She had shielded Violet from that as much as possible but she had never been sure whether she was doing enough for her sister. As Damon asked where she was when he was really twenty one, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “I wasn’t even a twinkle in my parents’ eyes back then, old man,” she teased, able to fall back into that old routine with Damon despite the situation they were currently in. As he spoke again a smile touched her lips. “Technically you’re undead,” she corrected as she reached over and ran her hand down his cheek. “Either way you might have been down but you’ve never been out and that isn’t going to change now,” she assured him. No matter what she wasn’t going to let Damon give up the fight and she hoped he knew that. “Once you get through this then we can see where this is going to go,” she said, shifting a little closer to him as he kissed her brow. “Sounds like she’s the kind of woman who can keep you on your toes,” Claire said, a smile touching her lips as she let her free hand rest against Damon’s cheek and she took them into his memories. This time had to have come eventually. It should’ve done almost a hundred and fifty years before, Giuseppe’s coup with his pistol guaranteeing that both of his sons ended up in the ground. The family legacy would’ve carried on regardless, his third son continuing the line that his elder sons had failed to consider when they’d taken up with the vampires plaguing their town. Katherine had already put plans in motion however, making sure that both he and Stefan had been drinking her blood by that point, ensuring that death in any form would have them waking again already in transition. Damon had been pretty sure Katherine had been too proud to see the Founder’s plan before she’d found herself locked up in the church with the others but Katherine had always been one step ahead of them all, including the Original hybrid. She’d taken steps to see that she wouldn’t end up in the tomb with the others and she’d spent more than a hundred years after that drifting around the world, likely knowing his desperation to see her freed all along. Like a love sick puppy he’d pined after her, willingly severing any sort of tie he might have had with anybody else in this town to get what he’d wanted all along. The wool had been thick over his eyes. After the truth had been revealed Damon had thought that he was clear of all of that, incapable of being fooled now but Klaus had shown him the error of his ways. The hybrid had twisted him around until he’d ended up with only two options – die in agony or allow his brother to do the last thing he wanted and hand himself over to someone was only going to encourage the ripper side of him. It would be torture for both of them and Klaus had known it.
This was the only part of the plan that Klaus couldn’t have known about. Until Claire had shown up at the Grill he hadn’t even admitted what he’d felt to himself, let alone spoken that part aloud. According to Giuseppe feelings should be buried and Damon knew he’d lived by his example for way too long. Swallowing, trying to rid his throat of that parched feeling, Damon nodded. ”I was the same with Stefan. After our mom died, it was just Giuseppe and the two of us and Giuseppe sure as hell wasn’t going to do anything to take care of us.” By then his eldest son had already been too much of a disappointment and that corruption had only rubbed off on his youngest as time had marched on. Giuseppe hadn’t managed to divide the two of them entirely but by being caught in London he’d done that between Claire and Violet and some part of him had always regretted that. That wasn’t the life either one of them should’ve had but fate had forced things to play out in a different way. While Claire had moved on with a family of her own, managing to get married and have kids before her past had caught up with her, he’d spent the whole of the twentieth century pining for a woman who hadn’t given a damn about him. Damon tried to laugh at her words, grimacing when the sound broke into a rattle again. ”Not so much of the old thank you,” ha managed hoarsely. ”I don’t look much older than that even now, at least I didn’t.” With the poison burning its way through him who knew what was going to happen at the end. His mouth curved weakly. ”Stop splitting hairs,”he warned, his eyes fluttering shut at her touch. ”This might be the first time for that. I’m down further than I’ve ever been…” And his only way up was for Stefan to get here and save his big brother by falling on his sword. Damon kept himself close, his hand creeping to the back of Claire’s neck, hot on her cooler skin. ”She’s more than I deserve,” he managed hoarsely. ”She’s always keeping me on my toes, keeping me going when all I wanted to do was give up.” As Claire spun his memory back she was the one that he saw. Walking through the crowd in the muggy London theatre. Blue eyes looked from the crowd to the stage, pausing, catching on the brunette whose voice was suddenly filling the air like a songbird.

For a long time Claire had been happy living her life on her own, or at least that was what she had kept telling herself anyway. The truth was that until she arrived in Mystic Falls and was reunited with Damon and Stefan she hadn’t truly been living her life, not the way she should have been. Guilt over killing her sister and having to leave her husband and children behind after she was turned had stopped her from wanting to get too close to anyone again and if she was honest she regretted that now. She knew why she had done it, keeping her distance had been her way of protecting her heart so she wouldn’t end up getting it broken when she lost someone else, but she couldn’t deny that she had been lonely. There had been a few people along the way that had managed to break down her walls, Ares being one of them, but she had still found it difficult to let people get too close to her. Those walls she had built to protect herself had all come tumbling down with the reappearance of the Salvatore brothers in her life, though, and despite the fact that she could well end up losing Damon in the next few hours she was still grateful for the time that she had been able to spend with both of them. They had made her realise that she shouldn’t feel guilty for living her life the way she wanted to and she knew that she was in a much better place now because of it but she knew that she would do whatever she had to in order to keep the people that she loved in her life and that included Damon. She hadn’t wanted to admit to herself how she felt about him, not until she knew that he was actually going to make it through this, but she genuinely did care about him and if she was honest she couldn’t imagine a world without him in it. One thing she knew for sure was that she wasn’t going to let Damon give up. He hadn’t wanted her to tell Stefan what was going on but she had known that she had to. If the roles were reversed and there was something wrong with Violet then she would have wanted to know so that she could do everything in her power to save her sister and she knew that Stefan would want to do the same for Damon. The two of them didn’t always get along but they were still brothers and it was clear to her that they would do anything for one another. She wasn’t sure what price Stefan was going to have to pay to get the cure for Damon but whatever it was she knew that they would figure it out. Stefan and Damon were both family to her and she refused to lose either one of them. “You did a great job of looking after him, anyone can see that,” Claire admitted. She knew that it couldn’t have been easy for him but he had stepped up to take care of Stefan the same way that she had stepped up to take care of Violet and she didn’t doubt that they were both better for it. “You might be closer than you’ve ever been but you do not get to die on me, Damon Salvatore. Not now,” she said, her voice fierce as she spoke. It was shame that had kept her from seeking Damon and Stefan out after she was turned and she regretted that now but she refused to let Damon be taken away from her too and she knew that she wasn’t going to let him give up now, not when Stefan was doing everything that he could in order to save his brother. Claire could feel the heat in Damon’s hand as it came to rest against the back of her neck. He was burning up and she knew that the normal methods of breaking a fever weren’t going to work for him. All she could do was try and keep him comfortable until Stefan arrived with the cure. Damon was getting worse with each passing minute but she knew that Stefan would arrive soon, he had to. As Damon spoke, Claire felt a smile touch her lips. “Then you’d better keep fighting and show her that you deserve the faith she has in you,” she said, kissing his forehead gently before taking them into his memories. The one that they were taken to surprised her, she had met Damon at a party after that particular performance but she hadn’t known that he was actually there in the audience watching. “You never told me you were there watching that night,” she said, her smile a little rueful as she recalled the way that things used to be. “Why did you choose this memory?”DAMON SALVATORE

With Katherine dead and no reason he could see to go on, he’d wanted to die. Sitting there a hundred and fifty years ago as Stefan had pleaded with him to complete the transition he hadn’t been able to stomach the idea of eternal life without the woman he’d fallen head over heels for. Fast forward all that time and it couldn’t have been more different. Living a life without Katherine in it now would’ve been an absolute dream, anything he was sure he’d felt for her shattered into thousands of bloody little shards the moment she’d revealed she’d never loved him. The wisest thing, broken hearted Damon had thought, would’ve been to get in the Camaro and drive forever, leaving her and Mystic Falls with its small minds and smaller hearts in the rear-view mirror for good. Even when he’d started hearing whispers about Elena being in danger that sage little voice in his mind had screamed that he was better off away from him, maybe even better off never having allowed Stefan to push him to feed that first time. More fool him. Laying in his bedroom with the woman he should’ve opened himself up too all those years ago at his side Damon finally realized that he didn’t want to die. Those hundred and fifty years and Katherine’s stomping over his heart in those vicious stilettos had been worth it to get to here, to Claire, to be the person who could maybe repair some of the bridges he’d gleefully burned when he’d first driven in to town. There’d been nothing but the need to get Katherine out of the tomb and maybe make Stefan a little miserable in the process in mind then. Now … that was all so damn unimportant, a waste of time that he couldn’t claw back. Those little grains of sand in the Damon Salvatore hourglass were running out now, slipping away with nothing he could do stop them.
They were gonna try though. Stefan falling on his sword, paying whatever price Niklaus was gonna ask of him and Claire staying right here, getting to watch as the poison did a number on his system, as he slipped towards that edge one ungracious inch at a time. The laughter that rolled through him probably should’ve pushed him another inch towards it but Damon was pretty sure it nudged him the other way, holding all that darkness at bay just a little more. ”You missed all the years when I did my absolute best to do the opposite,” he told her honestly. ”Did he tell you what I did to his friend when I needed a scapegoat for the council?” Golden hearted Lexi, always trying to protect Stefan at any cost, nothing but a pawn in the game he’d been playing then. How Stefan had forgiven him for that one he still wasn’t sure. He had though, bit by bit they all were with cheerleaders like Claire and Elena leading the way. They could cheer all they wanted for him to pull through this but even Claire’s orders had a chance of failing.
Letting the rattle of his laugh fade away Damon forced his eyes open, studying her face, trying to let a little of that fierceness rub off on him. ”I don’t know how much pull you’ve got over fate but … if anyone can get me through this just by ordering me around, it’ll be you,” he promised. She’d called Stefan despite him ordering the opposite, the least he could do was hold on by his fingernails until his brother got here, the price likely to be paid now no matter the outcome. Damon anchored himself with a hand on Claire’s neck, his throat working, feeling the desert like heat burning through every cell as he forced words out. ”She’s bossy too,” he managed to quip, the corners of his mouth twitching upright as he found himself spun back to that first night at the theatre. The smile turned nostalgic and as he heard her voice lifting in his head again, the note high and pure. ”You thought I was just there to party, didn’t realise I was just as cultured as everybody else in the place. It was the first time…” Damon’s voice grew hoarse as the hunger burned hotter. He swallowed hard, trying to find the words to continue. The first time he’d seen her, the first bolt of something more than just lust for someone other than Katherine.

There was a reason why Claire had taken to living her life on the outskirts of society for the most part and if anything was going to remind her of why that was, seeing Damon in the state he was in definitely fell into that category. Losing Violet had ripped her heart in two and even though her actions had been justified since Stefan would have died if she hadn’t stepped in and her sister’s soul had been long gone by the time that Violet had died thanks to Henry and Samuel, it hadn’t made the knowledge that she had killed her sister any easier to live with. She had sworn that she would always protect Violet and she had failed miserably in that task. She had eventually found a way to move on enough that she had been able to fall in love and start a family with an incredible guy but she had always felt like something was missing. She had spent the rest of her human life devoted to her husband and children but if she was honest there had always been a part of her that had still been holding a candle for the eldest Salvatore. Damon had infuriated her more than just about anyone else during the time that they had spent together in London and he had certainly known how to get under her skin but he challenged her and that was something that she had always secretly enjoyed. It was only after learning that he was sick that she had finally come to realise that what she felt for him was more than friendship and she refused to lose him now. “No, he didn’t,” she admitted, studying his face carefully for a moment. “What happened?” Stefan had told her about Lexi before and she knew that the woman had died but Stefan had been a little sketchy on the details and now she couldn’t deny that she was curious as to exactly what had happened to his best friend. She had heard some stories about the things that Damon had ended up getting himself into when he first arrived in Mystic Falls but there was clearly still more that she didn’t know and she wanted to get to the bottom of exactly what had happened. “I’ll do my best,” Claire assured him. She knew that ordering Damon around wasn’t actually going to help that much but she was doing her best to keep him positive and motivated because she knew that if she let him truly believe that all hope was lost then he wouldn’t have any reason to fight any longer and just the thought of him giving up terrified her. She didn’t want Stefan to have to do anything drastic in order to save his brother but she also knew just how much Stefan loved Damon even after everything that had happened. If she’d had the chance to save Violet then she would have done so in an instant and she didn’t doubt that Stefan would to the same now. He had been shocked when she’d told him about the werewolf bite and she had heard the tremble in his voice when he had spoken so she knew that he was going to fight for his brother so she knew that she had to get Damon to hold on long enough for help to get there. “I’m sure she only does it because she cares about you,” she offered, knowing that that was an understatement to say the least. It would have been easy to just lose herself in the feel of Damon’s embrace but he had wanted to go through some of his memories and she had known that she couldn’t deny him that wish. The memory that he took them too, however, was enough to surprise her and as his words trailed off she turned back to look at him. “It was the first time what?” she asked, needing to know what he had been about to say.
