A family dinner to celebrate his birthday might not’ve been on the cards if Magnus hadn’t gotten so forgetful. The second his dad had walked out of the room in Aruba, Linc had buried his face in Cassie’s neck and groaned (all for the non-fun reasons). Magnus had already been twitchy after his birthday last year, laying down the rules of his house, lecturing him on the disrespect he’d shown by doing those things with Cassie under his roof. The same couldn’t have exactly been claimed of the boat (that’d been Hector’s roof) or the room they’d been sharing at the resort. Hector was probably taking his side and whispering in Magnus’ ear, but at the rate he was going he’d probably have to hit his five-hundredth birthday before his dad would finally loosen the reins.
Apologies had slipped out a couple of nights ago as he’d sprawled on his bed, inviting Cassie over the phone. It wasn’t what he’d imagined his birthday celebrations would look like this year – especially after the way the last couple had gone – but the ’can we do something else’ had stuck in his throat the second after Magnus had suggested a family birthday dinner this year. With Cassie. He’d already started in on the ’that’d be nice’ by the time Magnus had told him to invite Cassie. That had to have hurt, at least a little bit, but it was progress too, right?
Last year it had been all Halloween themed with Cassie in charge of the night, there wasn’t a pair of short shorts or red lights in sight this year. There were lights though. As he’d come down the stairs, the smell of dinner already scenting the air, they’d twinkled around the edge of the mantlepiece and around the table. He imagined, like dinner, that had been Jo, although his dad had probably put the high ones up, not wanting Jo to have to go climbing ladders to do it. If Cassie had helped with the decorating she probably would’ve been able to have them floating towards the ceiling with a single word.
Dinner seemed to be a grand affair in itself. The kitchen had been off limits for most of the day, scents rolling up the stairs in layers to tease his senses. Jo had told him that she’d asked Magnus about some of his favourites, but before she’d gone shopping for all of this she’d asked him too. It wasn’t gonna taste the same, nothing did these days. His throat had gone thick as he’d said roast chicken though. Mrs Graham had done it on Sundays when she could, calling that and the little fairy cakes they’d make together her speciality. By now Jo and Magnus had heard plenty about the woman who’d been the only decent parent to him until his dad had saved him, but this felt like he’d be sharing part of her with Cassie too. Although he suspected there’d be an actual birthday cake instead of the little cupcakes stuffed with buttercream and topped with a little jelly jewel.
Trotting down the stairs, Linc tried to steal a glimpse at what Jo was doing in the kitchen, but he caught the warning look and threw his hands up with a grin. ”Wasn’t lookin’, honestly. Do you want me to set the table?” As though he wouldn’t try and grab a look what they were having while he grabbed the cutlery. As a kid he’d always tried to steal a taste of the butter cream, or one of the little sweet toppers, nostalgia probably would’ve had him doing it again, but the chime of the doorbell had him diverting towards the door.
You were meant to get that flutter in your stomach when you were told to make a wish over the candles – at least when you were a kid – but they took flight in his stomach as he opened the front door instead. The smile was soft and instant, as it always was with Cassie. Magnus’ eyes were probably trying to bore holes in the back of his head, unless Jo had taken the opportunity to distract him, but Linc lifted a hand to her cheek, dipping his head to kiss her all the same. ”Hey,” he breathed softly as he drew back. Heat rode his cheekbones as he stepped back to let Cassie into the house. ”I’m so glad you’re here. Come on in. I think dinner’s almost ready. Jo’s been workin’ on it all afternoon.” Probably with Magnus hovering alongside, wanting this to be a nice dinner, even if he wasn’t one hundred percent happy with the company. It still felt a little like a dream sometimes, he had parents, people who loved him unconditionally, who took care of him even when he was being an arsehole, he had Cassie, someone he loved with every breath.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ PARENTS WERE ALREADY KINDA SCARY. CASSIE never actually had to deal with them━her dad was dead and her mom was basically a vegetable━but she’d also never had a boyfriend before. Linc knew all this, obvs, even the fact that she was literally mute ‘til she got her throat cut (and then, ironically, she found her voice). Her grandma taught her how to be polite and everything, but she didn’t have practice with meeting her boyfriend’s parents. And, like, obviously she’d already met Magnus (a little too much, honestly), but she was still trying to make him like her. She’d never met Jo, but something told Cassie she wouldn’t be as hard to impress, ‘specially ‘cause she was kinda new to it all. Not that it didn’t make her any less of a step-mom or anything! Magnus was just more… well, he clearly saw himself as Linc’s real parent.
She definitely won some points by helping him find a cure, but probably lost them again when he walked in on them in Aruba. Yikes. It was like she was Slytherin and he was Dumbledore, and he just kept pullin’ points for absolutely everything. Which sucked, ‘cause all she wanted was for him to like her.
So it was super weird when Linc said that Magnus wanted her to come over for his birthday dinner. ‘Cause, like, what?! Last year had been another time when he’d ‘caught’ them (though it wasn’t half as awkward because they weren’t literally in the middle of it), and now, after Aruba, he wanted her to, like, be there? At dinner? With him? Maybe it was a way to keep an eye on them?
Cassie tried to dress up as nicely as she could, but also not over dress. No rips in her jeans, a bell-sleeve top that didn’t scoop too low in the neck, no offensively-witchy jewellery. When she arrived, gift bag in tow, she didn’t see Magnus and Jo in the kitchen, didn’t even look for them despite how nervous she was. None of it mattered when Linc was in front of her… lookin’ like a big cutie. As per usual.
“Hiii! Happy Birthday!” Cassie beamed, slipping her arms around his middle and meeting his lips with hers. “Oh, wow.” She said honestly, genuinely impressed at Jo’s effort. She handed Linc’s gift to him as she walked in, remembering (after a step too far) that Magnus had a No Shoes Rule. She slipped them off, then grabbed Linc’s hand and took a few cautious steps towards the table with him. “Hello!” Cassie said softly, waving a little awkwardly with her free hand. “Thanks for inviting me.” She found Jo, “It’s nice to finally meet you! Can I… do anything to help with dinner?” She practically squeaked. See? She’d be fine! She was being polite and could definitely win back her House Points!

”What do you think, does it need more salt?” Jo dipped the teaspoon into the simmering pan of gravy she’d been making with the juices from the chicken. Tangy with the lemon and thyme she’d slipped beneath the skin of the bird, along with a good sized pat of butter. Neither one of them knew Mrs Graham’s exact method with the Sunday dinners Linc had told Magnus about, but she hoped it was close enough.
Her lips curved into a smile as she looked up into Magnus’ eyes, their cornflower blue depths lent glimmers of gold by the lights she’d draped throughout the living room. She’d never imagined she’d be doing this ever again after she’d had to leave her boys behind. Had never imagined finding her way back to that path or ending up a mother again in a way. A touch of the joy she’d felt as her boys woke full of joy on the morning of their birthdays. Most outside of the court celebrated their name days, but as a heathen she got away with it (not that they’d ever celebrated birthdays back in Cambulac). Small gifts and sweet treats like the honey cakes she had made Magnus for his first birthday after they’d found each other again. Little treats she hope they had continued to treasure after she had left.
Knowing what to get a boy in this day and age was harder – especially since she couldn’t exactly get nostalgic over antiques with Linc the way that she had with Magnus. The meal was her gift – the chicken, the potatoes, onions and carrots roasted with it, and the crowning glory, the giant fairy cake she’d put together in place of a traditional birthday cake. Hearing Linc approaching, she twisted back, carefully draping the cloth back over Linc’s cake. Her grin stayed put, but her eyes narrowed at him. ”My boys used to say the same thing, but I could always tell when they were trying to sneak a peek.” Kaegan had been just as bad as the three of them, roping Magnus into the mischief where he could. ”We’ve got it covered.” Literally in the case of the cake. The chime of the doorbell cut off any further attempts for Linc to work his way into the kitchen and spoil the surprises she had managed for him. Anticipating Magnus puffing a little over what should’ve been a private little greeting between the two of them, Jo immediately turned, gathering up the tray of cutlery she’d taken out to set the table before she served dinner. Her eyes narrowed at Magnus this time, a hand settling at the small of his back as she passed it off too him. He couldn’t scowl too much at Cassie if he was busy. ”Thank you,” she murmured lightly, pressing a kiss to his cheek before she nudged him out of the kitchen.
Jo brushed her hands off on the dish towel, returning Cassie’s wave as Linc led the girl into the house. She was a sweet girl, a little dinged around the edges by some difficult years (dying and coming back wasn’t something she would wish on her worst enemy), but good at heart and obviously entirely smitten with Linc. ”You too,” Jo called to her, glad that they could do this as a family. ”Do you want to help me carry all this through while Linc helps Magnus set the table?” It didn’t take long to bring the dishes out to the table, the chicken given pride of place in the centre, the carving knife set for Magnus to do the honours and serve it up. Jo squeezed his arm lightly as she sat down on their side of the table. ”I hope you’re hungry,” she murmured to Cassie. ”We made a few of Linc’s favourites.” From the smile on Linc’s face, it looked like she’d done a good job with that little taste of home.

━ evil notions come free ━ WELL, MAGNUS FIGURED HE’D DO THE RIGHT thing━the good thing. He’d tell Linc to invite Cassie to his birthday dinner, and Magnus would manage himself. He had Jo, who was likely more than happy to keep him in check, and while there might be a few moments where he had to grip her hand beneath the table and say a prayer for strength, at least he’d have her there.
It was sweet how she fell back into motherhood without him ever asking her to. He wasn’t sure if she’d want this life with him, but he’d taken on the responsibility of not only a child, but a baby vampire, and he was going to stick with it. It seemed Jo was craving that part of her old self, too. He was eternally grateful that they could do this together.
She decorated the house for Linc and started on dinner, which smelled familiar━he was sure of it━but likely not nearly as familiar as it was for Linc. It brought him back to her and Kaegan’s small home, a place always filled with love and warmth━at least until she’d gone.
Magnus grinned over his shoulder at the boy when he approached, then let it fall to Jo as she practically shooed him away. He bent, pressing a kiss to her cheek, in silent awe of Jo and her neverending loveliness.
The door sounded, and Magnus immediately went rigid, suddenly unsure of how this would pan out. But then Jo was shoving cutlery in his hands and ushering him towards the table, and Magnus went willingly, setting out a place at each of the four seats. He glanced up to smile at Cassie as she arrived, saying a polite, “Hello,” back, before looking down at his task again. He didn’t notice Cassie removing her shoes a little too late, and instead kept on setting out the cutlery. It was good that Cassie was helping, he supposed, as she was the only one actually eating this meal.
He would’ve said it was ‘nice to see her again,’ but that sounded (and felt) a little strange.
Magnus instructed Linc to get the plates out while the women finished up the dinner, and it didn’t take long before they were all seated, somehow on opposing sides of the round table. He wasn’t sure how it’d happened, as he’d set the cutlery out evenly, but he had a feeling Linc had something to do with it. The thought actually amused him more than anything.
He smiled softly at Jo as she squeezed his arm, and then leaned forward to begin tearing off pieces of the chicken. “Cassie, white or dark meat?” He asked, already knowing Jo and Linc’s preferences. He made sure everyone had a piece before filling his own plate, and slowly added the sides as the dishes came around. “It all smells lovely, Jo. Thank you,” Magnus said softly, leaning over to press another kiss to her cheek.
Once they’d started eating, and he’d hummed happily and praised Jo, Magnus finally tried to back up what he’d done in inviting Cassie for dinner. “So, Cassie…” He began, glancing up at her, and watching the girl look at him like a deer caught in the headlights. “Are you still workin’ for Nicholas Reid? Any interestin’ pieces come in lately?” It was the best he could do. He didn’t want to ask how she’d been since Aruba━considering he wished to forget seeing her there at all━but he wanted to make some effort.
“Linc,” He started a while later, “‘Ow’s your birthday dinner, eh? Though I suppose we should be askin’ Cassie, as she’s the only one who can taste it the way it should be.” Magnus chuckled, and he felt some tension dissipate because of it. The rest of them could appreciate it, of course, but Cassie gained actual sustenance from it.
