Tobi couldn’t pinpoint exactly how he was feeling about River. Confused? Angry? Both. Why the fuck was River ignoring him? Tiptoeing around the apartment and rushing off to his bedroom at the sight of Tobi. All because he couldn’t accept that he was probably gay. He never even said good morning to Tobi anymore. So, when Kace’s message came through asking Tobi if he wanted to go out for a drink he welcomed the temporary distraction from his current situation. To be around someone who actually knew how to have a conversation with a man. Tobi had suggested they meet at Campbell’s bar. Quiet and civilised. Everything Tobi wasn’t. Hopefully he could knock back a few shots of tequila and wash away any feelings he had towards River, not that he knew what kind of feelings he was having in the first place. Everything had become so damn clouded since they kissed. It unnerved him. Tobi wasn’t used to having feelings for people. Everyone was kept at arm's length. Not because he was some immature adult who was scared of commitment but because enjoyed being single. He loved being carefree doing whatever he wanted and whoever he wanted. Settling down just wasn’t on the cards for him. His family drama had him holding back on anything too. His parents weren’t too welcoming to anyone from outside the coven. Tobi was expected to bring home a female witch, not a male human but why were they expecting anything less than conventional from their son? It wasn’t just that though. There was also the harrowing fact that his parents will one day force Liv and Luke to merge their magic, resulting in the death of one of them. How the hell could he explain that to someone? He actively protested this since he was capable of talking. But then what was the alternative? They all die. Tobi rummaged through the pile of clothes on his floor, pulling out a bright blue shirt covered in seahorses. He quickly threw it on and shimmed into his jeans. River was nowhere to be seen when Tobi rushed from the apartment. By some stroke of a miracle he arrived at Campbell’s bar a minute early. As he stepped inside he noticed Kace was already sitting in one of the booths. “Damn. Here was me thinking I’d be the first to arrive.” He said as he approached Kace, slipping into the seat across from him. KACE CLARKE

Giving someone your number, even when they’d asked for it, didn’t mean you were gonna hear from them. Kace figured it’d been about a fifty-fifty shot. If it didn’t happen? Well, he wasn’t gonna go crying about it. Life in Mystic Falls wasn’t the same as it had been back home, hell, he wasn’t who he’d been the last time he’d done anything like this. Dying and coming back to life, twice if you counted being erased from existence and brought back again, tended to fuck you up in multiple ways. Some of them had healed, at least far enough that he wasn’t gonna be wringing his hands over leaving Mikey and Dom closing up tonight.
You wanna grab a drink? hadn’t exactly been code, but still, he’d left the Diner an hour and a half before he was meant to meet Tobi. A hot shower, a little time with Frank’s hair dryer (he was pretty sure it was Frank’s, he seemed like the sort of guy who had a manscaping routine), aftershave. It wasn’t like some anonymous hook up he was trying to impress, there’d been those other messages after all, but hey, a little effort before they got to the live version of the pics – if they got there – was worth it.
There were plenty of other things he’d felt rusty over after his first return. Playing tutor to Cassie before Kit had had hit the roof had proved that sleeping with someone wasn’t one of them. If he’d gone back to LA before now, he’d have already slipped back into his old routine. Gage, Ronni, whoever else caught his eye. Little moments where he felt more fully alive than at any other time since he’d got back. Mystic Falls shouldn’t have been any different, but that wasn’t a part of his routine he’d entirely thrown himself back into yet. Baby steps – or better yet, just getting back on the damn horse.
That analogy had struck as he’d driven towards Campbell’s, wringing a smirk out of him. He’d seen Tobi’s pics, it wasn’t exactly an inaccurate thought. Parking a couple of spaces down from the bar, Kace strolled towards Campbell’s with ten minutes to spare. He might not’ve been Mr Responsible in many other ways, but punctuality mattered. A quick scan of the place proved that Tobi wasn’t quite as anal when it came to that. He headed for an empty booth, catching a passing waitress to ask for a beer just as he slipped into it. In a way the place reminded him enough of Bodhi’s for a pang to hit the pit of his stomach. Life woulda been pretty fucking different if Kit hadn’t come back there with the mental scars war and grief had carved into him, He’d have given all of that up if a heartbeat if it would’ve saved his brother from that.
Minutes later he was halfway through the first beer, brushing foam from his upper lip with a knuckle. The door had opened a handful of times since he’d arrived, but this time it was Tobi strolling in, wearing a shirt covered in … seahorses? Kace grinned, gesturing vaguely with the bottle before he set it down on the table. ”Pop was always a stickler for being on time. I didn’t beat you here by much.”
Kace let his gaze drop to Tobi’s shirt, his grin twitching again at the pattern. Not something he’d wear, but he appreciated a guy who went his own way, especially in a town where most folks seemed like little cookie cutter versions of each other – only the club seemed to really stick out, an eye sore for some maybe, but some people needed the place. ”You got dressed up huh? I like it.” Catching the same waitress heading back towards the table, Kace turned that grin on her, then flicked his gaze back to Tobi. ”I’m gonna grab another beer. What do you want?” If it was the club he’d already have been downing something stronger, but Campbell’s didn’t seem like the sort of place that lined up a dozen shots on the bar and set them on fire.

Tobi didn’t do dates, they made him feel uncomfortable. It was usually a one night thing or a friends with benefits situation, but never any dates. It was why he liked Penny. She expected absolutely nothing from him, but contact had dried up with him. He knew it had something to do with Lawrence, but he didn’t bother to dig any further with that. He just told Lawrence he had nothing to worry about when it came to Tobi. He wasn’t there to steal Penny from Lawrence. So why was he asking Kace out for a drink? He told himself it had nothing to do with River, but it had everything to do with River. If he threw himself at another man then he’d stop thinking about River, right? Penny did the same with him. Jumping into bed with him to forget about Lawrence. He was starting to think her plan hadn’t worked. Now she’d called things off with him. Not literally, but by going silent on him. Which means Tobi was now feeling a little frustrated. He almost released it all with River, but fear gripped them both in a vice. They were trashed and it could have been the alcohol talking. He tried his best to shake any thoughts of River from his mind as he stepped into the bar to join Kace, who was already sipping his first beer. “Always gotta dress to impress is my motto.” He said with a wide grin, gesturing to his loud shirt, “Wait until you see my collection of winter coats.” Which mainly consisted of faux fur coats and barely fitted in his wardrobe. “Sure.” He turned his attention to the waitress, “Can I have a cosmo, please?” Something which he’d finish within two sips, but he was aiming to start off civilised. Going full Lazarus hadn’t turned him into a monk – giving Cassie a lesson was proof of that – but Kace supposed he was the next best thing to one. A sinner turned saint (alright, he’d been too much of an asshole to Kit in the name of helping him to claim that), habits that he’d never seen as bad shed like a snake skin when he’d stumbled free of his coffin. Too cowardly to go back to his old life in LA, not wanting to drag anybody else into the shit that periodically washed over his life tidal wave style, he’d held himself at a distance from most people. You only had to look at what had happened to Mikey to realise how dangerous letting them in was. Family didn’t count, but he probably should’ve come with a warning for everybody else. This guy will fuck your life up.
Another night spent drinking beers with Frank, or sat watching mind numbing TV while everybody else was out. Flickering images that filled the room and chased back what lay beyond the drapes. The channel flipped when the gun shots or explosions cut in, dread filling the pit of his stomach at the thought of Kit coming home to it again. Seeing his brother fall apart again when he’d come back had brought back all those old fears, leaving him walling off bits of his life again when he should’ve been out there, pushing the boundaries, living.
From what he’d seen, Tobi didn’t have much trouble with that last bit. He was a formerly-dead-boy pushing the limits the same way Theo had. The grim reaper? The afterlife? We don’t know ‘em. Seahorse shirts and d*ck pics screamed fuck you to the universe. Maybe it was time he livened up his closet, tossing aside the hoodies and jeans. A trip to a barber probably wouldn’t hurt either, cut away a little of who he wasn’t anymore, stop scandalising the old ladies who came into the diner expecting polite service instead of a grin from a long-haired degenerate. Kace’s gaze ticked up to Tobi’s tussled hair as he considered it. Maybe not, there was definitely something to be said for being able to get a fistful of hair.
His grin broadened as he met Tobi’s eye, a low laugh rolling out of him. ”Maybe I oughta try followin’ it sometime. I’m probably underdressed.” Subdued at least, his shirt dark and plain like the rest of his clothes. Kace’s brows rose. That definitely sounded like an invite to him. ”I’m guessin’ it’s real impressive,” he drawled. ”You’d love some of the spots in West Hollywood. They’re stuff’s right up your street.” It was the sort of stuff designed to catch your attention – wannabe starlets flitted between them like hummingbirds, trying to find something in them to make them stand out from the crowd.
If there was one person in the bar that did that now, it was Tobi. Guys in Texas didn’t go ordering cosmos, most of the guys he knew in LA didn’t either. It was beers down on the beach, sticky sweet shots that tasted as good off of skin as they did out of a glass. Kace aimed his smile at the waitress. ”You know, that sounds pretty good, can we get four cosmos, please? Thanks.” Kace tilted his head slightly as he leaned back in the booth. ”Figured we might as well double up, this place gets busy in the evenins. I guess there’s not a lot of choice around here if you want drinks – the Grill, the Casino, here … the club, and I guess that doesn’t feel like a place to hang out these days. How’s that goin’? Hope Kit’s not orderin’ you around too much.” Kit could draw a hard line on the job, wanting to give it his all despite the place being a cess pit, but he was also fair, even when you couldn’t see he was at the time.

It was difficult to shake off that feeling you experience when you're brought back to life. Tobi had been literally ripped from the other side and catapulted into today's society. He was nothing but a spirit, and then suddenly he was lying in the basement of his parents' house. Alive and breathing. Tobi shot upright, gasping for air as he tried to gain his bearings. Then he spotted Sam, also alive and well. The first words he spoke were, "What the actual fuck?"—because that was the only thing that sprang to his mind. Tobi leaned back in his seat, lips twisting into a grin as he listened to Kace’s low drawl. There was something about Kace’s way of talking—slow, almost lazy, like he had all the time in the world. “No, no. You look great.” In a town like Mystic Falls, there was no such thing as being underdressed unless you were attending one of those bullshit events they held. “Oh hell yeah. When the temperature drops, you’ll see me around town in my faux fur coats.” He was looking forward to wearing one into work just to see the look on Hector and Kit’s faces. “Never ventured over to that side of America.” It was kind of hard to jump on a plane when you’re in a wooden box. Tobi was making up for lost time now, though. Time just continued to slip away. He’d managed to pry himself away from his family to explore the world, but that was all short-lived thanks to the Ghost Riders. Tobi spent forever on the phone arguing with his dad about coming home. They had a whole family of fucking warlocks and witches; why did they need one more? It wasn’t like Tobi was the most powerful, either. Fuel was only added to the fire when he was the one to step into the train station. Tobi’s eyes lit up a little when Kace doubled his order. A man after his own heart. “I like your thinking.” He’d knock back the cosmos in an instant anyway. “Not bad. I feel like I’ve been thrown into this fucked up supernatural family though. More fucked up than my own family. Hector wants to take us all to Aruba, though, which is nice.” A free vacation. What could he even complain about? “Kit is a decent boss, to be honest. Doesn’t order me around much. More like…nudges, y’know?”He caught the waitress’s eye as she placed the cosmos on the table and flashed her a quick, easy smile. “Thanks, sweetheart,” he said smoothly, then turned his attention back to Kace. Tobi lifted his glass, the neon-pink liquid inside catching the low bar light. “To being the guys who order cosmos,” he toasted, tipping his glass toward Kace with a wink. KACE CLARKE

It hadn’t mattered how thin the tether to his old had been when he’d followed Kit across the country. What did a dead guy need to worry about the life he’d left behind? Who’d wanna stand there and watch their friends empty out their closet or slowly strip them out of their apartment? Who’d wanna know how big (or small) the hole left in their lives was? In his head there hadn’t been a chance that he’d end up walking, talking and breathing again. When he had it’d felt like he was some sort of refugee here. Frank hadn’t blinked about the whole thing, just opening up some corner of his life to make room for his bestie’s little brother. Clothes had handed over without a word, cash too, little things to keep him going until he found his feet again.
These days his wallet was a little fuller, even if technically it wasn’t his name on the paperwork on the Diner. According to official records Kace Clarke was still resting peacefully six feet underground in California. He hadn’t had the balls to start digging into how you had that shit officially reversed yet, especially when Kamilla had practically made his death a public spectacle. One step at a time, in his case an inch at a time, moving like a crippled ninety-year old.
Kace glanced down at himself and huffed out a laugh before he let his eyes slide back up to Tobi. Maybe he did look great, but he could break out of the chrysalis he’d been wrapped in after he’d come back and add a little something new to his closet. ”I could let better. Maybe you can play stylist at some point, drag me shoppin’.” And probably freak Kit out with what he came back with. In LA Tobi might just’ve been another boldly dressed hottie on the streets, but in Mystic Falls he’d stand out against all the drab business casual. ”I’ll keep an eye out for it.” For him. Maybe if he ever found the balls to go back home and reveal to the rest of his family that he was alive, he’d take Tobi back there with him. The smile on his face took on a slightly sad, nostalgic edge. ”A lot of people think it’s overrated, but it’s worth seeing. It was home.” He gave a little shrug, the word sticking in his throat. Was home, now it felt like that was definitely here.
A couple of cosmos to celebrate his fresh start. Kace slanted a Tobi a grin when his approval of the drinks came. ”Might as well start as we mean to go on,” he said lightly. He meant to make the most of the night and being out. Sandy brows rose and he let out a stunned chuckle. ”Makes me wish Kit had decided to keep me on. I coulda done with some time on a beach. They’ve always seemed tight there. A while back Hector flew them all to London.” While he’d been a little pissed that he hadn’t been invited to that either, he’d seen it as a break from the shitty reality of his life for Kit. A week without having to look the brother he killed in the eye every day. That had been before those sons of bitches had erased him from existence and had given Kit months like that though.
He was glad Tobi hadn’t launched into a tirade about Kit being an asshole boss, it made all of this way easier. Barring Kit’s kicking him out from the job, he’d never seemed like that sorta guy. The army had probably knocked that shit out of him if it had ever been there in the first place. ”Just to keep you on the right path,” Kace said quietly, nodding. ”He’s always kinda been like that.” But he’d definitely fought it more that day than he ever had before.
”Thanks,” Kace murmured as the waitress set the cocktails down on the table, watching the easy way Tobi charmed her. His gaze flicked from that easy smile back up to Tobi’s. Kace lifted a glass, feeling a warmth already working its way through him before he chinked his glass against his. ”To being the guys who are gonna be downing a dozen of ‘em tonight.” Kace drained half his cocktail in one go, letting out a small sound of approval as he trailed his tongue over his lower lip. ”Is this how you usually party? Quiet bars and cocktails?” The question was light, but he already propping his elbows on the bar, studying Tobi as he leaned in a little.

Most men would turn their nose up at going on a shopping spree, but not Tobi. There was nothing more satisfying than coming home with bags and bags full of lothings, although Mystic Falls stores were somewhat lacking with fashionable pieces. It was full of bullshit boutique stores with overpriced items. But after coming back to life he was introduced to a whole new world of internet shopping. It was a dangerous game. It was too damn easy to add everything to his basket. During his time he would be flooding Cassie’s phone with links to various pieces of clothing for advice. Like, was one hundred dollars a little bit too much a pair of leopard jeans? She usually said no, encouraging him to buy them. A low hum rolled out of Tobi as his eyes scanned over to Kace very quickly. “Would you actually let me style you?” He was talking sequin trousers and loud shirts, that mirrored the one he was wearing. He couldn’t picture Kace walking around town in anything too flamboyant. “But we gotta go somewhere else. The shops here are lacking.” He couldn’t style someone with items that were two years out of fashion. “I grew up in Portland, we never went down that way for family vacation. It was usually somewhere nearby, like Seattle.” It wasn’t cheap to take all the kids on vacation. Overseas trips were off the cards. Well, that was the excuse their parents gave but it probably traced back to the coven in some way. His dad was wary of leaving them behind in case something bad happened, but they had no idea their worst nightmare was living under their roof. Tobi was the new kid in the bar. At times he felt like a new character that arrived during season five of a TV show. They all had this weird friendship with one another, where on the surface it seemed like they tolerated one another, but beneath it all they actually did look out for each other. “Having a boss who’s a billionaire is a perk… next time we go I’ll bring you as my plus one.” The comment caused a sting of guilt to build in Tobi’s chest. River should have been his plus one this time round, but he was too busy. Hopefully the confusing feelings about River would fade away by the time Aruba came around. Tobi took a large sip of his drink, his gaze settling on Kace. So damn tempting to finish the whole drink, but they weren’t cheap and it wasn’t happy hour. “Sometimes. Other times I head down to the club then occasionally I’ll sit in the apartment with a bottle of wine listening to eighties music.” Or nineties if he wanted to bask in nostalgia. He rested one elbow on the bar too, his chin balancing on the palm of his hand, “How about you? What do you like to do for fun, Kace?” There was a twinkle of mischief behind his eyes as he spoke. Out of all of them Kace had felt like he was closest to taking after Kamilla. Not in the shitty, abandoning your husband and kids for a shitty career kind way, of course, he’d never do that shit. It was more that he’d never seen himself as the sort to settle down. White picket fences, a wife (or husband, he wouldn’t have ruled out either, even if he had been all domesticated), a bunch of kids running around the place, didn’t feel like it’d ever work for him. That was where he’d figured Kit would end up one day (he still had the chance to make it happen), Kandice was already there. The closest he’d ever gotten was inheriting Bodhi’s and his name on the paperwork for the Diner. If that was as far as he ever got in the responsibility stakes, he didn’t think he’d mind all that much – even if Kit thought he was worth way more than that.
Kace laugh settled into a grin and after just a second’s hesitation, he nodded at Tobi. It’d get him out of his rut without, and would probably leave some wrinkled old mouths hanging open when he turned up at work in that stuff. ”Mmm,” Kace muttered by way of agreement as Tobi bashed the local stores. ”Maybe we can take a ride to Richmond. There’s gotta be somethin’ a little … shinier there.” Richmond still wouldn’t rival the glitzy insanity of LA, but it would be a step up. Unlike Tobi, it seemed like he’d spent half his childhood travelling, the yoyo trips back and forth between LA and Texas. As he’d gotten older and Kit had enlisted there’d been trips up and down the coast with Gage and Ronni. ”Seattle’s not bad, not a patch on LA though.” The corner of his mouth lifted and the thick feeling in his throat intensified. Would he ever actually make it back there?
When the Ghost Riders had taken him it’d felt like he’d never have the chance to reunite with his family (well, with Kandice at lest). There’d been moments when that had felt like it was for the best. Kit would be free of the guilt that tore him apartment while he existed, Kandice wouldn’t have to explain to her daughter about what had happened to Uncle Kace and Kamilla didn’t have the opportunity to keep monopolising on his death like he was just a marketing opportunity. The minute he’d come back that rabbit hole of thoughts had collapsed. Even if him being back caused problems, he’d rather be here, alive, griping over not getting the benefits of working for Hector. For that alone it would’ve been worth sticking around the club.
”That oughta come first on the job advert – may include travel to tropical locations on the boss’ dime.” Given what other shit they had to put up with at the club, it was probably the least Hector felt like he could do for them. At Tobi’s offer, Kace studied his face for a minute before he smiled. ”I’d like that,” he admitted honestly. Maybe Kit wouldn’t, but a beach in Aruba had to be safer than the monster filled basement at the club. All his problems would still be waiting for him when he got back here, for a few days, though, he have sand between his toes and the scent of salt water clinging to his skin again.
Tapping his thumb lightly against the neck of his glass, Kace watched Tobi sip at his drink – more judiciously than he had. There’d been that feeling of kindred spirits almost when the two of them had realised they were both a part of the Formerly Dead Dudes club. Tobi felt like the sorta guy they’d have dragged into their circle back home, the kind happy to party or just hang out down on the beach with a bottle. ”The eighties had some decent music. How ‘bout sittin’ sittin’ on beaches doing the same?” Not that there was anything in town he could drag Tobi off to for that.
Kace’s nose wrinkled faintly as he grinned and considered the question. ”You mean other than guys in furry jackets and seahorse shirts?” he asked almost innocently, although he guessed that was more like who he’d do for fun. ”Not that different to you, although there’s a lot more surf and sand involved. I’ve been a surfer since I was a kid. They never could get me off the beach. Set up a bonfire with friends, hang out under the stars with bottles of booze, wake up out there next morning.” God, he missed it like he did a limb, but there was nothing much he could do about that yet.

When it came to his family, Tobi preferred slipping under the radar, staying invisible and avoiding any spotlight, thank you very much. It was easier for him, especially since he wasn’t a twin and wouldn’t be the next leader. But his behaviour—smoking, drinking, questionable fashion choices—made it hard to stay out of sight, and it drove his dad crazy. His parents wanted them to blend into the background in Mystic Falls, not attract attention or stir up questions they couldn’t answer. “Maybe,” he said, although he didn’t hold much hope. He shrugged at Kace. “My parents would hate LA. It’s too fast-paced, too crowded.” Too many people, but maybe that would’ve helped them stay unnoticed in a place where no one asks questions. Then again, LA didn’t have the magical history his parents were chasing. Their new neighbours here probably already had their suspicions; it was that kind of place where everyone knew each other’s business. This time, they couldn’t even hide the house behind a spell. Tobi had only taken the job at the club because the pay was generous. Meeting Hector made him realise why. The man had an endless supply of money. “I hope I’m that rich one day.” He didn’t know what he’d do with all that money, though he was pretty sure it’d involve a one-way ticket somewhere tropical. “Maybe he’ll take suggestions for our next trip. I’ve always wanted to go to New Zealand,” he added, but there was no way he’d be travelling there via boat. He was already feeling anxious over the fact they were going to Aruba via water. Some of the music at the club made his ears bleed. It was one of the few times he felt like an old man, grumbling about how music used to be better. “I used to love the beach as a kid, but…” Beach meant water, and water brought back too many flashbacks. “There’s no beach near here anyway.” No pool in the back garden anymore either. Even his parents weren't keen to buy a house with a pool when they arrived in Mystic Falls. Kace’s comment pulled a laugh from him, a grin breaking across his face. “Are you foreshadowing?” he teased. “Sounds like a decent childhood. Back in Portland, we had lakes, but we couldn’t go jumping in them during the winter.” One of them would have been coming home with hypothermia. KACE CLARKE

”I don’t think my dad ever liked it that much either,” Kace admitted. He puffed out a breath, something tinged with amusement. ”My parents split when I was a kid. We spent the school year in Texas with Pop, holidays in LA with Kamilla. They never managed to live in other’s world for long.” Thank God they hadn’t stuck it out, Pop would’ve been miserable there in Kamilla’s toxic Hollywood world and she’d have gone out of her mind, making him even more miserable if she’d tried to stick it out in Texas. It’d seemed like the best of both worlds, at least when he was still young enough to see that there was still plenty of shit that could go wrong in their lives. When they’d been really young – and innocent enough to believe the gilded words that had fallen from Kamilla’s mouth – it had felt as though their mom was a film star. They hadn’t been old enough to watch any of her schlocky B-list movies, or to hear the gossip that always rolled around Hollywood. She’d lived in LA, a place that screamed stupidly wealthy. Hector probably could’ve bought her house and dozens of others without making a dent in his bank balance. ”You and me both," Kace drawled. "I’d definitely get in on that trip. New Zealand’s meant to be incredible.” There’d been a surf championship on the North Island that he’d qualified for when he was fifteen, but thanks to Kamilla, he hadn’t been allowed to go. It’d pissed him off for months, not that she’d noticed. Her word had been gospel – if he wanted to surf there were plenty of places in Cali.
Kace made a low sound in his throat, shaking his head. His gaze ticked to the windows, the growing darkness outside that hid the trees in the distance, the river and falls that were the closest thing to the sea around here. He looked back at Tobi as he realised he’d trailed off. But … ”What changed?” he asked, raising a brow at Tobi. ”It’s a shame. It’s not that far a drive though, you could probably be in Virginia Beach in a couple of hours.” And yet he hadn’t made the trip, had he? He could’ve dropped the suggestion to the family, made a day of it out there with Freyja and Theo and the kids, him and Kit hiring boards to take to the water again. It was like a step too close to his old life and he was unsure if taking it would mean admitting there was no going back there or it’d bring on a sudden desperation to be back in what had once been home, trying to pick up the shattered pieces he’d left behind.
For a second it’d seemed like there was some awkward pause waiting to slam down between them when he’d asked about the beach, but Tobi was laughing now, the combination of it and that grin on his face adding to the guy’s already magnetic appeal. His own grin was lazy, its warmth reaching his eyes as he dropped his gaze to Tobi’s mouth. ”Could be,” he murmured, confirming his interest at least. ”Figured I’d shoot my shot, put it out there into the universe.” Breaking a dry spell that had only had a temporary reprieve with Cassie – even shorter than intended thanks to Kit’s inability to knock and Cassie’s obvious love for Linc. ”You’d probably have ended up with hypothermia if you’d tried.” LA was warm practically year round, Texas only slightly less so. He’d have frozen his ass off in Portland. Kace drained the rest of his first cocktail, brushing a hand over his beard before he picked up the second. ”I oughta find something new to do while I’m here. Like you said, we’re not exactly on the doorstep when it comes to beaches. Maybe I should spend some more time at the club. You make cosmos this decent there? You look like you can shake a mean cocktail.” The pitch of his voice had dropped a little, his tone a little rough around the edge.
