Claire had known that moving to Mystic Falls, the town she knew Damon and Stefan had grown up in, was a risk but as it turned out it was one she was so glad she had ended up taking. After so many years of being on her own following her decision to compel her husband and children to believe she had died and move on without her she had craved being somewhere that felt familiar to her even if she had still believed back then that she didn't deserve to be happy after what she had done. She had stayed with her family for as long as she could but in the end she had realised that she was putting them in danger by staying. She had known that leaving them was the right thing to do but that still hadn't made it any easier and she knew deep down that she would always carry that guilt with her. She had finally learned to move on, though, and a very unlikely person had ended up helping her with that. She had met Damon and Stefan back in London, they had saved her from Henry and his brother Samuel who had been using her as a human blood bag and even though she and Damon had understood each other to an extent given that they were both the older sibling, she had hated the way that he and Stefan had been at odds back then. That had changed by the time she got to Mystic Falls and she really was glad about that. Damon had always had a way of getting under her skin but for some reason she had found herself thinking about him often even before he came back into her life. She hadn't known back then that a reunion over a game of pool would turn into something so incredible but she knew better than to take it for granted. Claire loved Damon and she knew that he loved her, it might have taken a confession while he was dying to make them both see that there was something more between them but it was going a lot better than she had ever thought that it would. There had been people who had tried warning her against getting involved with Damon to start with, Ares had never pulled any punches and it had been clear that he hadn't liked Damon but he had still helped by bringing the dress Damon had bought to her ready for their first date. There had been others as well, Stefan had told her that he had suspected that there was something more between her and Damon but he had been in the minority by thinking that they were a good match. Even some people in her apartment building had tried warning her against getting involved with Damon but as far as Claire was concerned it was one of the best decisions she had ever made. With Stefan, Tatia, the twins and MG all living at the Boarding House alongside Damon it used to get a bit busy there sometimes so she and Damon had gotten into the habit of seeking refuge in her apartment. It was there that she had found herself seeing a completely different side to Damon, one that enjoyed spending days or evenings she had off with her and was happy to do anything even if that meant just sitting down and watching something awful on television. It was the kind of life that Claire had never thought she would have but the truth was that she loved it. She had been thinking about the future a lot lately and she knew that she wanted that future to include Damon. Claire knew that she was ready to move forward in their relationship but she was born into a different time and she didn't know how Damon felt so for now she knew that she was going to have to stay quiet and try to suss out how he was feeling and whether he wanted that too. She knew she didn't want to force it, though, so she knew it would be best to just try and play it by ear. As it was her shift had finished early that day so she had been able to head home a lot earlier than she had thought that she would. She had already arranged to see Damon that evening but they were going to be spending time at the Boarding House for a change instead and if she was honest Claire was looking forward to it. Damon had offered to cook but Claire had stopped on her way home to pick up dessert and a bottle of wine before heading back to get changed. She knew it would surprise Damon that she was early for once but that was exactly what she wanted so as soon as she was ready she got in her car and drove to the Boarding House. Grabbing everything out of the passenger's side Claire made her way to the door and knocked, knowing that this time it wouldn't feel right to just let herself in considering he wasn't expecting her just yet. Damon tugged the cork from the neck of the bottle and sniffed at it. It was meant to be a decent red, but unlike bourbon, he wasn’t exactly a connoisseur when it came to wine. Giuseppe had always tried to impress guests with the best vintages he could lay his hands on. For a man so concerned with his son’s drunkenness, he hadn’t exactly been a paragon of virtue himself. An abusive father, a bad enough husband that his wife had ended up in an early grave. A hypocrite through and through. It had taken more than a century to start working his way out from under his father’s shadow. Who cared if Giuseppe was rolling in his grave, for all his sins he’d probably ended up burning down in Hell anyway. The best revenge was this – against both Giuseppe and Katherine – a settled, happy life with someone who saw more in him than either one of them did.
Feeling downright domestic, Damon poured himself a glass of the wine before he poured most of what was left in the bottle into the pot that was simmering on the stove. He considered it for a moment and then added one last shot to it. When he’d been young he hadn’t needed to pay attention to what was served up at the dinner table. The Salvatores had people to cook for them, people to wait on them. After he was turned, there’d been years, decades, where he hadn’t been too bothered about fitting in. If his skin was pale and cold, few noticed. Victorian England hadn’t exactly been the picture of health. Gradually eyes had turned towards them and hiding out wasn’t as easy as just compelling the looky-loos away. As time drew out he’d picked up a few tricks, finding some sort of satisfaction in cooking, and in eating, even if it was always gonna be a means to an end now.
The boeuf-bourguignon bubbled lightly in the pot. The scent of braised meat, the burgundy and the sage leaves he’d tossed in plumed into the air as he gave it one last stir before setting the lid back on. He’d made plans with Claire for tonight, like so many other nights. A scatter of them here, but most of their time together spent at Claire’s apartment. Damon puffed out a breath as he sipped at his wine. At first it had been to avoid the crowds here, but after so many nights spent at her apartment, he’d realized that her neighbours were just as bad. Some of them he’d managed to charm, but there were others who still looked at him sourly as he stepped into the elevator. Was it any surprise that they thought she was too good for him? Nope.
Unlike how it had been even a year ago, the Boarding House was quiet around him. No witnesses to his little act of domesticity here, hopefully a whole night to themselves too. Damon leaned back against the counter, taking another sip from his glass. As the knock at the door sounded, Damon tipped his head back and groaned. Was a single night too much to ask? Still carrying his glass, and a saccharine smile, he headed for the door. The only people he wouldn’t mind being in the place already had keys, anybody else could … ”What happened?” he asked, the fake smile turning to genuine amusement as he recognized the figure beyond the glass and opened the door. ”Let me guess, you single handedly captured the FBI’s number one most wanted and Forbes was so impressed she gave you the rest of the shift off?” Unlikely, but remotely possible. Stepping back, Damon gestured Claire in, stealing a kiss as he closed the door behind her. ”Hi,” he drawled warmly. ”I honestly thought I was gonna be cooling my heels for a couple more hours yet.” She’d always surprised him though, in the sort of good ways that felt like they’d turned everything around.

There was a time when Claire’s life had pretty much seen her working, sleeping and repeating. Ares had always tried to draw her out of her shell but she had been so full of guilt about leaving her husband and children behind that she hadn’t let herself truly live her life. She had become a police officer so that she could help people and try and do something with the long life that she had been given but she had always felt like something was broken inside her. She had never wanted to become a vampire, she had seen what that had done to her sister Violet and even though she had known that there were good vampires out there in the form of the Salvatore brothers, most of the ones she had come across were downright evil. As it was someone from her past had become a vampire and had decided to turn her for revenge and Claire had felt like she was paying the price for that ever since. It was only when she reconnected with Damon and they started spending more time together that the walls she had built a long time ago to protect herself had slowly started to crumble and what she had thought was a deathbed confession for him had brought them tumbling down completely. She had thought that Damon had forgotten all about it afterwards, that everything he’d said and the kiss they’d shared had been lost to the haze that Klaus’s bite had caused, but in the end they had worked it out and they had been happy together ever since. Claire never paid any attention to the people who asked her why she was with Damon or tried warning her against being with him, they didn’t know him like she did. Damon had made her realise that she did deserve to be loved and live her life after all so it didn’t matter what anyone else said. Claire knew that Ares had started warming up to Damon even if he wouldn’t actually admit it and Damon had managed to win some of her neighbours around as well. There were others who were still sceptical but there were also those who still seemed to want to have Damon all to themselves as well but Claire had never let any of that bother her. Never had she thought that she would get to live a normal life with Damon, though. They had faced so much together during the time they had known each other but through it all they still managed to hold onto some semblance of normality. They occasionally spent time at the Boarding House but more often than not they ended up at her apartment instead. It never mattered to Claire where they ended up as long as they were together but some of her neighbours had started giving her the third degree about Damon even though they had been together for a long time now. She really wasn’t sure what their problem was not to mention it wasn’t any of their business but it was starting to get pretty tedious to say the least. Needless to say Claire was glad when Damon suggested they spend some time at the Boarding House instead. She knew that there might be others there but the house was more than big enough that they shouldn’t be bothered too much even if they weren’t alone. Claire had been looking forward to seeing Damon all day and for once her shift finished early so it had seemed pretty perfect. It didn’t take her long to get ready and grab dessert and a bottle of wine for them before heading over to the Boarding House. She knew that Damon wouldn’t be expecting her to get there early since she had never managed that before and it was clear from the smile on his face as he opened the door that she had been right. “Now that would have been good, wouldn’t it?” she grinned as she stepped inside the Boarding House. “Hi yourself,” she said as she returned the kiss happily. “In that case it’s definitely a good thing I got here early, can’t have you getting bored,” she teased. “Are you here alone?” she asked, listening out for the sounds of anyone else in the Boarding House but not hearing anyone. “We managed to stop a gang that has been robbing homes so the Sheriff let me leave early,” Claire said, her smile softening as she held the dessert and wine out to Damon. “I come bearing gifts.”DAMON SALVATORE

Most people didn’t like him and for the most part, the feeling was mutual. A father who had outwardly hated him had burned most of the desire for meaningful human contact out of him. Damon suspected that his showing of that side of himself was the reason some believed he’d turned his emotions off long ago. Like Niklaus Mikaelson he was the bad brother, the one you didn’t want to cross, the one who made his own brother’s life as much a misery as he made everybody else’s. It was a reputation he’d been happy to foster for decades. Admitting that you had any sort of a soft spot just left it wide open for others to take advantage of. Katherine had been happy enough to use him and he hadn’t been the only one. Stefan had fallen prey to her manipulations, the Lockwoods too. Painted nails sunk deep into them she hadn’t blinked once when it came to getting what she wanted. If she wanted to look now, she’d see the shields he’d put up, but she wouldn’t have a chance of getting past them to lay a finger on what had really come to matter to him.
Who he was behind closed doors wasn’t the same Damon the others got to see these days, although the overlapping versions of him were growing more similar by the day. Maybe one day they’d be identical, but for now Claire got to see an entirely unique version of him. Damon’s smile turned to a smirk, dark brows hitching faintly as he shut the door behind her. ”Good, but not surprising. I wouldn’t put it past you to manage it sometime.” As though Mystic Falls was a hub for human crime. Anybody who was likely to be causing major trouble here wouldn’t be listed anywhere like the FBI’s top ten. Sheriff Forbes did her best to keep those two worlds apart, but it wasn’t foolproof – if it had been the FBI wouldn’t have made their way here in the first place. Damons smirk had softened when he drew back out of that kiss, clucking his tongue lightly at Claire. ”If only that worked twenty-four-seven. You know how dangerous it gets when I’m at a loose end.” Boredom was a dangerous state of mind, almost as bad as anger.
Leading his way back towards the kitchen, Damon shook his head. Getting the Boarding House entirely to themselves was a rarity enough that Claire probably wasn’t believing her ears. ”Yep,” he drawled, stopping to lift the lid on the pot again. It was bubbling away just as it had been. ”So I wasn’t wrong then.” Snorting softly, he turned back towards her, eyes narrowed faintly. ”You single handedly cleared up a huge case and got a reward. I bet Liz was practically throwing a party.” The FBI might not’ve been though. Having someone clear something that big under their noses had to have those black suits chafing. ”You mean gifs on top of your company for dinner? I’m a lucky, lucky man.” Amusement tugged his lips back into a smile as he took them from her. ”You want some of those now?” He’d emptied the bottle of red after all, and there were plenty of bottles still in the wine cellar for later if they wanted to keep off with a celebration now.

There was a time when Claire’s life had consisted of nothing more than going to work and going home but thanks to Damon, Stefan and Ares, those days were long gone. For too long she had kept herself at a distance from everyone, not letting anyone get close to her because she hadn’t felt like she deserved it, but the three of them had shown her just how good it was to have people in her life again. She had other friends now as well but they were still the three main ones that she tried to spend time with when she could. Ares felt like her work husband most of the time with the amount of time they spent together while they were on shift but she tried to spend her evenings with Damon when she could. It had taken him almost dying for the two of them to admit their feelings for each other but ever since their first date they had been happy. Claire had always known that Katherine had done a real number on him and that was why she hadn’t thought that anything would ever happen between them but Damon had changed and that was something that Claire could see even if there were others who couldn’t. Claire knew that there were still people out there who had their reservations about Damon, he had done some awful things to Stefan’s friends before she moved to town and even the human population seemed to know about the reputation he had built for himself if her neighbour’s reaction to their relationship was anything to go by. The woman had urged Claire to be careful and keep her distance from Damon but Claire had assured her that it would be fine and so far it had been. Claire knew that Damon didn’t want to repeat the mistakes of the past and even if she was the only one who got to see this new version of him then she knew that she would take it. “Maybe I should make that my mission in life. I might even be able to eradicate all crime from the world while I’m at it,” Claire teased, a smile touching her lips as her eyes met his. She knew that it wasn’t going to happen, Mystic Falls was a beacon for the supernatural but she doubted that any humans who were high on the FBI’s most wanted list would ever take an interest in the town. As Damon spoke again, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “I know it does. Perhaps it’s time you thought about getting a job, at least then you’d have something to do with your time when I’m not around to keep you out of trouble,” she grinned. She wasn’t sure that Damon would ever go for that but she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t thought before that it might be a good idea for him to have something to do to occupy his time. She had her job and Stefan had had school at first and now a job and she would be lying if she said that she didn’t worry about Damon not having anything like that. He didn’t need the money but it wasn’t always about that. Following Damon through to the kitchen, Claire couldn’t deny that she was surprised to find that he was there alone. She was so used to at least one other person being around the Boarding House but this time it seemed that they were truly alone. Normally when they wanted some privacy they had to seek refuge in her apartment but she had to admit that she preferred the Boarding House, it felt like a real home. “That makes a nice change,” she admitted as Damon confirmed that there wasn’t anyone else living there. Damon’s next words were enough to draw a smile to Claire’s lips. “It wasn’t single handed but Liz was really happy and I wasn’t going to argue with getting to leave early,” she shrugged. It meant that she got to spend more time with Damon so there was no way she was ever going to turn that down. As he said he was a lucky man, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “And don’t you forget it,” she said, letting her hand find the back of his neck as she drew him in for a kiss. “You know me, I’m old fashioned. It would have felt wrong showing up empty handed.” She hadn’t known what Damon was planning so she’d had to guess at what would go well with it but she hoped that what she’d brought worked. “Definitely. I could use it after today,” she admitted. It felt like it had been a long shift and right now she wanted nothing more than to unwind and spend some time with the man she loved. DAMON SALVATORE

It might not’ve seemed it to Claire, but even back when they’d first met, he’d known she was capable of doing whatever she cared to put her mind to. Expectations for women then hadn’t exactly been high and Henry and Samuel had played on that – until they’d both ended up dead. If it hadn’t been for the two of them the Devereux sisters could’ve ended up on stages worldwide. Neither one of them probably would’ve ever learned what he and Stefan were and maybe that would’ve been best, but now, Damon figured he wouldn’t have changed how things had ended up for the world. You could want the past to be different, but most of the time, you’d eventually learn that most things were for the best (like the evil bitch you fell in love with abandoning you for more than a century). For the people of Mystic Falls, for Claire, for him, she’d ended up in the best possible place. With Claire in uniform, the town was that little bit safer, and his evenings were definitely a lot more entertaining these days.
”I’ve got faith that you could. Deputy Devereux, cleaning up the world one law breaker at a time.” While her partner fumbled along behind her – although, he had to give some credit to the guy, he wasn’t a bad cop, he just lived in the shadow of a far better partner. Pride shone in his grin as he made his way past Claire and back towards the kitchen. It wasn’t much of a career, but he’d happily bask in her glow every day of their long lives. Damon puffed out a little chuckle as Claire agreed him being left to his own devices was dangerous. Almost anybody in Mystic Falls would’ve agreed with that assessment. "So I can become some boss’ problem all day?” he asked with a smirk. ”I’m not sure if there’s anybody in Mystic Falls who’d wanna take that sort of trouble on.” And he wasn’t sure there was much in the world he was that good at. Not like Stefan who’d always been mechanically minded, or Claire, who had that clear stripe of good judgment running through her and a heart so big anybody could see it. He was mouthy and short tempered, bored by most things within a few minutes. And worse, there were times when Giuseppe’s judgment that he’d never amount to anything still ran through his head from time to time.
Damon made a low sound in his throat as Claire agreed with the blessing that was an empty Boarding House. Undoubtedly the front door would slam closed again at some point tonight, but if they were lucky it’d be long after they’d finished with dinner. He grinned at Claire as he leaned back against the counter in time to see her smile. ”Liz is pretty good about giving credit where it’s due. I’m guessing that we means you weren’t the only one who got to go home early.” Although the fact that Claire was here instead of celebrating with her partner would definitely leave him gloating the next time he saw Ares. He set the dessert and wine aside on the counter, then drew a finger over Claire’s back in a cross of promise as she drew close for a kiss. ”Never,” he whispered against her lips. ”You can take the girl out of the 19th century, but you can’t take the 19th century out of the girl.” His grin was as teasing as his words. ”We’ll call it a celebration for a job well done. So how did you track down the bad guys?” Damon smoothed a hand down her back before he drew away to pop the cork on the wine and poured two glasses.
