** set before Toni's capture — all he wanted was to receive the love he gave —
Ethan couldn't help but feel as though there was something amiss. It felt as though there was a chunk of his day that he can't quite recall how it had gone. But then, he was in the firetruck with his husband and the others and they were on the way back from a... Call. It had to be a call since they rarely ever take the truck and just go anywhere. But for some reason, he just can't remember where they had gone. He chalked it up to exhaustion since they were nearing a twenty-four hour shift. He was looking forward to the next 48 hours since they'd be able to have time off.
Ethan rolled his shoulders back with a pleased sigh falling from his lips as he approached the door to their home. He pulled out his keys, the familiar jingle was more than enough to give him the reassurance that he needed to know that they had finally made it home and he was about to get some much-needed rest. But first, he felt like having a drink. Perhaps a little celebration for surviving a long shift. Though, he can't help but feel as though there was something different about his husband. Ethan turned to look at his husband once they were home. He shrugged off his jacket and let it rest on the hanger. “Are you okay, Toni? You've been a bit quiet.” Ethan asked, his concern etched onto his voice as he looked at his husband with a slight tilt of his head. “Did something happen?” He asked not long after, wanting to know what was going on so he could help in any way that his husband needed.

Toni was used to living with something hanging over his head by now. Ever since Eli was born he’d had to live with the fact that he might lose her to the same curse that had made her mom take her own life one day and he had been trying to find a way to stop that from happening. Now they were closer than ever, Henrik and the others at the Salvatore School were still working on it but something still felt wrong and it went beyond the strange day they’d had at work that day. It had started out completely normal but a chunk of time was missing and no matter how hard Toni tried to remember what had happened, he just couldn’t. There was one thing that came to mind every time he tried to think about it, though, and that was a face. It was only ever there for a moment and then it was gone so he couldn’t even picture it clearly but the hollow eyes always stayed with him. He could feel that something was happening in the pit of his stomach and he really wasn’t sure what to do about that. He was quiet as Ethan drove them home after their shift, they always took it in turns to drive and Toni liked that as it gave them the chance to talk on their way home. Normally he and Ethan would talk about anything and everything but all Toni could do was stare into the distance as he tried to piece together what was going on. He had heard from Diego that Tommy had been getting some strange calls around town as well but this felt like something else. As they pulled up to the house and he climbed out of the car lightning flashed across the sky and Toni almost jumped out of his skin as he spotted a figure by the gate that hadn’t been there before – a girl around Eli’s age who looked familiar but he couldn’t think of her name no matter how hard he tried. She opened her mouth to speak and only a few words fell out – help me, dad. He turned to Ethan, about to ask if he recognised the girl but his husband was already inside the house and when he turned back to look at the girl again she was gone. For a moment he stood there staring at the spot she had been standing in only moments before. He couldn’t help but feel unsettled and he slid his hands into his pockets as he headed inside. Toni was playing everything over in his mind as he slipped his jacket off and hung it up, only snapping out of his thoughts when Ethan spoke to him. “I’m not sure how to explain it without sounding like I’ve lost my mind,” he admitted as he looked over at Ethan. “Maybe I have, I don’t know,” he sighed. He knew that he wasn’t making any sense right now but he really wasn’t sure how to put what he was feeling or what he had seen into words. “Have you ever felt like there’s something wrong with your life and not been able to figure out what it was?” he asked at last. He had felt that like there was something wrong after Ethan died but he had known the cause back then even if he hadn’t known the depths of his feelings for the man who was now his husband. Now he knew there was something wrong but he couldn’t place the cause for that feeling. ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan's expression turned into one of concern when he saw the way that his husband looked. He turned so his full focus was solely on him. “Okay, uh, you're officially getting me worried. What's wrong?” Ethan asked with a small frown of concern tugging at his features as his eyes remained on his husband, taking in his mannerisms and the fact that he sounded so defeated. “Don't say that. You haven't lost your mind. Talk to me, Toni.” Ethan defended in a soft voice, taking a small step closer to his husband because there was something so heavy about the way that he spoke.
“Um...” Ethan frowned slightly as he tried to focus on a time that he had felt that way. Maybe he'd felt that way before crossing paths with Toni again, but now? Now his life felt perfect even with the small hiccups that they faced along the way. “I don't recall ever feeling that way. At least not recently. Why?” Ethan asked with a hint of concern in his voice. “Do you feel that way?” Came his second question because the way that Antonio phrased that question made it sound that way and he wanted to know exactly what was making Toni feel that way so he can fix it as soon as possible because he hated seeing his husband like this. “What happened, baby?”

Toni loved the life he had with Ethan, Eli and Elias and he knew that he wouldn't give it up for anything in the world but he still couldn't shake the feeling that there was something wrong. A few days ago he had gone into their spare room and he could have sworn he had seen a pair of dance shoes in there along with a couple of CDs he knew weren't Eli's style. He had gone to ask their daughter about them but by the time he returned to the room they were gone. He had also found a couple of old baby photos of him holding a baby Eli and another baby but he couldn't for the life of him remember the photo being taken or who the girl was. Add to that what had happened that day and Toni was definitely starting to feel like he was losing his mind. "Sorry babe, I don't want to worry you," Toni said, his expression softening as he took in the concern that was written all over his husband's face. "I feel like I am. I've been seeing things," he admitted. He wasn't used to being the one his family worried about, he was used to being the one who worried about them but he knew he could talk to Ethan about anything and right now Toni couldn't help but feel like he needed exactly that. Making his way into the kitchen, Toni grabbed a couple of beers from the fridge and handed one to Ethan. Heading into the living room, he sat down on the sofa and patted the spot next to him for Ethan. Honestly, Toni felt exhausted right now so sitting down and having a beer with his husband before they had something to eat sounded like a good idea. "Let me guess, you felt that way after we were separated during the war?" he asked gently. "I did too." He had felt like there was something missing from the day Ethan died right up until he showed up on their doorstop and seeing Ethan again was the only thing that had filled the void. Now it was like that feeling was back again but Ethan, Eli and Elias were all still here so he couldn't put his finger on why he felt that way. "Yeah, I do. To be honest I've been feeling that way for a while," Toni admitted as he took a sip of his beer. He hadn't wanted to ever feel that way again after losing Ethan but now he just couldn't help it. "The other day I was in the spare room and I saw some dance shoes and CDs but when I went to ask Eli about them, they disappeared," he explained, knowing how crazy he was sounding already when he hadn't even got to the worst bit yet. "Tonight when we got home I saw a girl outside. She looked Eli's age and she looked familiar but I don't know why. She said the words Help me, dad," he continued, sure that Ethan was going to think he was crazy after that one. "Then there's the fact that I feel like I've forgotten a chunk of time today and whenever I try thinking about what happened I see another face that looks like something out of a bad Halloween movie."ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan shook his head gently when Antonio told him that he doesn't want to worry him. "It's okay. I just hate seeing you like this." But Ethan was more than willing to listen to what was troubling his husband because he knew that his husband wasn't the type to feel this way over nothing and he was always the one worrying about them and not the other way around, so for him to feel this way... It wasn't something to be trifled with, that much he knew. "Seeing things? Like what?" Ethan asked with slightly widened eyes because he hadn't expected Antonio to say something like that. As Antonio made his way to the kitchen to retrieve two bottles of beer, Ethan took his own, quickly thanking Antonio for the drink, before he watched his husband make his way into the living room where he sat on the sofa, Ethan moved to join his husband, smiling when he patted the spot next to him for Ethan to occupy.
He sat down next to him and turned his body better to look at Antonio as he spoke. His lips stretched into a small smile when he was able to tell just exactly when Ethan had felt that way. After all, he wasn't surprised since Antonio knew him so well. "Yeah, exactly. I just felt like everything was out of place but I had no idea how to fix any of it." Ethan revealed with a nod of his head following, his expression softening when Antonio told him that he had felt the same way too after they got separated.
Ethan was quiet as he listened to Antonio, his words were enough to make his heartbeat stutter as he continued listening to Antonio as he explained the occurrences where he had felt like something was wrong. He tilted his head slightly as he continued listening because he had a feeling that he had similar moments but... He can't recall what had happened. "Woah." Ethan couldn't deny that he had felt chills rush down his spine as he listened to Antonio talk about how the girl had asked him to help her. "Dad?" He repeated because as far as he was concerned, Adelina didn't have a sister.
"That's..." Ethan frowned slightly as he listened to Antonio. "Terrifying." He completed. He absolutely believed his husband because he knew that his husband wasn't the type to just make things up. "I believe you, okay?" Ethan moved his hand to rest it on top of Antonio's. "Whatever this is, we'll find answers." Ethan promised in a soft voice. "So you think you have another daughter?" Ethan asked, trying to imagine it for a moment. "There has to be some sort of explanation for this. This can't all be a coincidence and whatever that person with the creepy face is, I bet they have all the answers. You saw that person today? Did it say anything? Do anything?"

“I know. I have no idea what is going on with me right now,” Toni admitted. The last thing he wanted was to end up worrying Ethan but he also knew that he couldn’t keep this from him either. Ethan had only ever been honest with him and Toni knew that he owed Ethan that same honesty in return. Toni had seen a lot over the course of his long life but right now he honestly felt like he was seeing things and he was starting to think that he was losing his mind. He wasn’t used to showing weakness, he always tried to be strong for his family but this time the cracks in his armour were showing and Toni hated it. He knew that he didn’t have to pretend to be strong all the time with Ethan, they could talk to each other about anything after all and he knew that there would never be any judgement there, but Toni wasn’t even sure how to explain what was happening to him right now. Grabbing a couple of beers from the fridge was a momentary distraction but it was one that Toni had needed and he took a sip of his beer as he waited for Ethan to join him on the sofa. Toni’s expression softened when Ethan confirmed what he had thought. “It was the same for me. It felt like the world would never be right again after you died and that feeling only went away when you showed up on my doorstep,” he nodded. Something about that memory felt wrong somehow though. Ethan hadn’t randomly showed up at the house one day, he’d had a reason for being there but Toni couldn’t for the life of him remember what that was and that worried him. No matter how hard he tried to recall what the reason for Ethan showing up like that was, though, he just couldn’t seem to do it. Even as he tried to explain what was going on Toni knew that he sounded crazy and he knew that he wouldn’t blame Ethan for thinking that he had completely lost it. Toni didn’t know what was going on with him and he had no idea how to stop it either. “Yep,” he nodded as Ethan repeated that the girl had called him dad. “She looked right at me when she said it. I thought maybe she was looking past me and meant you but you were already gone and when I turned back to look at her, she was gone too,” he explained. Toni knew that it didn’t make any sense at all but then again they knew about the supernatural world so he knew that deep down perhaps he shouldn’t be surprised. “You’re telling me,” Toni agreed as Ethan said that it was terrifying. As Ethan said he believed him, Toni looked over at his husband in surprise. “You do?” he asked, letting out a breath he hadn’t realised he was holding. He hadn’t expected those words from Ethan at all but he was starting to think that perhaps he had underestimated his husband after all. “I was sure I was losing my mind,” he admitted. It was all so strange but the truth was that the feeling that something was missing had started long before all of this. “I hope so,” he said as Ethan said that they would find answers, placing his free hand over Ethan’s and giving his husband’s hand a gentle squeeze. As Ethan asked if he thought he had another daughter, Toni’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I honestly have no idea,” he admitted. “The scary thing is she looked so much like Eli and she looked the same age so they could have been twins. I swear she had my eyes,” Toni explained, unable to deny that he was distressed by the thought that he might have a daughter out there who needed his help. “We’d know if we had another daughter though, right?” he asked, his eyes searching Ethan’s as he spoke. Even as he said it there were alarm bells ringing in his mind, though, and he was more certain than ever that there was something wrong. “I saw their face whenever I tried to think about what happened during that missing time today. They didn’t say anything and I have no idea who they are but I think you’re right, they must know what’s going on.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan's expression turned sympathetic at Antonio's words. "We'll figure it out." He assured him in a soft voice, his eyes relaxing on Antonio, watching him with the same concerned look crossing his features only to ease into something much softer when Antonio told him that it had felt like the world would never be right without him. "It felt the exact same way for me." It felt surreal to cross paths with Antonio again after so long but it also ended up feeling like fate. He was eternally grateful for the chance to be able to see Antonio again. Ethan's lips formed a small 'o' as he continued listening to Antonio. God, it felt freaky. But at the same time, he was curious to know more about that girl. "Um... I wish I had some logical explanation to this, but I really do think that there's nothing logical about this because it is a supernatural thing. There's just no other explanation."
Ethan nodded his head at Antonio's question. "Of course I do." He assured him in a soft voice. "Whatever this is, we'll figure it out." He promised him not long after. There has to be some sort of explanation and until they find it, he'll never stop believing his husband. Ethan was already starting to paint a picture of how that girl looked like and there was something at the back of his mind that painted a blurred silhouette of a person he could've sworn he'd met and spent time with before but there was no recollection of someone like that in his life. He'd know if he had seen someone like that before. Especially if she was Toni's daughter. "I'm pretty sure we would, yeah. As far as we know, there's only Eli." As a daughter, he meant. But he was starting to realize that maybe there was something else because how else could you explain that girl's presence and the fact that she had called Toni her dad.
"That's really creepy." Ethan breathed out, looking around him for a moment. "But, we'll figure it out. First, we'll have to start with that Halloween knock-off, right? If we wanna look for answers, we'll have to look into the source." Ethan gnawed on his bottom lip before he stood up. "Hold on." Ethan disappeared for a moment before he returned with a notebook and a pencil. "You think you can draw how he or she, or... it looked like?" Ethan asked as he offered Antonio the pencil and the notebook to see. It'd be a good place to start, right?

“I hope so,” Toni nodded as Ethan said that they would figure out what was going on. He was tired of feeling like he was losing his mind, he had ended up in a dark place after Ethan died and he had distanced himself from everyone he loved but this felt different. It still felt like there was something missing from his life but this time he didn’t know what it was and that was infuriating to say the least. He knew that he still should have asked Eli about the things he had seen in the spare room but he had felt sure that he was imagining things. “I thought it would,” he admitted, a small smile touching his lips as he leaned forward and kissed Ethan gently. The feeling of Ethan’s lips against his own was always enough to ground him and it had the same affect on him now. “Even something about the day you turned up here feels wrong though. Do you remember why you ended up here?” he asked, not sure whether Ethan would be able to answer that any more than he could right now. Toni knew that it wasn’t a random thing but the answer seemed to be just beyond his reach. “I guess you’re right about that, there must be something very powerful at play here,” Toni agreed. None of this was normal and it was enough to make him wonder whether perhaps there were others who were going through the same thing. Toni honestly wouldn’t have blamed Ethan if he thought that he was losing his mind but his husband was so trusting and had more faith in him than Toni had in himself right now. “I’m so lucky to have you,” he said gently, his eyes full of nothing but love for his husband. Of course Ethan understood and wanted to help, Toni knew that he never should have thought anything different but with everything that was going on right now doubts had started to creep in. “As far as we know, for now,” Toni nodded. At first he had thought that the girl was mistaken when she’d called him dad but there was something else that he couldn’t explain, a feeling of love he had felt towards the girl even though he couldn’t remember ever having seen her before. It was the same love he felt towards Eli and Elias, the love of a father. Just the idea of having a daughter that he didn’t know was enough to make his heart ache, though. He had been through that with Eli before, he hadn’t known that Samara was pregnant when they broke up and he’d only found out he was a father when she had left Eli on his doorstep. Having another girl call him dad now was enough to shake him to his core and he knew that he had to believe that Ethan was right when he said that they would figure it out. She’d asked him to help her and Toni knew that he was going to try and do just that. “You’ve got that right,” Toni agreed as Ethan said that the face he’d seen was creepy. “That’s a good idea. Maybe Ric and Jenna will let us use the school’s library,” he said, knowing that they were probably more likely to find answers there than they were anywhere else right now. He was a little surprised when Ethan told him to hold on before disappearing but he returned moments later with a notebook and pencil and Toni thought for a moment as Ethan asked if he thought he could draw what they looked like. “I can try,” he nodded, taking the notebook and pencil from his husband before starting to draw the face he saw while they were driving home and whenever he tried to think about the time he was missing. “That’s him,” he said, tearing the page out of the notebook and holding it out to Ethan so he could see it before starting on a second drawing. This one was different, it was the girl he had seen outside. “This is the girl I saw,” he said once he was done, holding that out to Ethan too. “Do you see the resemblance to Eli?”ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan knew that there was a lot they still don't know about the supernatural world and there were a lot of mysteries out there that they didn't have answers to and it seems like this mystery was one of them. The mysterious daughter who Ethan remembers nothing about. He smiled gently before returning the kiss. "Yeah, I was..." Ethan frowned slightly when he couldn't complete the sentence because there was just something missing.
"That's literally crazy, I was..." Ethan trailed off, a small frown tugging at his features when he couldn't figure out how he turned up here. "Huh..." Ethan trailed off with a small frown. So maybe there was a mystery daughter, after all. He just can't remember her, for some reason. "I don't remember." Ethan admitted, sounding surprised by the knowledge. "Oh, absolutely. You can't just forget someone like that. It makes no sense." There'd just be something that would remind them of her, at the very least. But the house was bare from anything that would link any memory to her.
"I'm so lucky to have you in my life too, Toni." Ethan said in a soft voice, meaning every word that slipped from his lips. "For now." He repeated because it was becoming clear that they had a daughter out there, one they don't really remember. "Exactly. We can go there tomorrow and figure out what's happening." Ethan said with a nod of his head following. He watched as Antonio drew the figure that stalked him and when he showed it to Ethan, he couldn't help the frown that tugged at his features. "That... looks terrifying." Ethan breathed out before his attention drifted to Toni again when he began to draw something - or someone - else. "Holy shit." He mumbled, looking at the picture of the younger girl and her resemblance to Eli was... alarming.
"They look like they could be twins." Ethan whispered, looking back at Toni. "This is actually crazy. I... I've never seen or heard of something like this before." Just completely forgetting a whole person like that. "We'll find out an answer to this. "Weirdly enough, when I looked at this drawing, I felt like I knew her but then I..." Ethan trailed off with a hint of confusion as he looked at the picture. "I feel like I'm back to not recognizing her at all. There's got to be an explanation to this."

Toni had felt like there was something missing for a while but he hadn’t been able to figure out what that was so he had always dismissed it as work stress or something along those lines. He was happy with Ethan, Eli and Elias and he knew that he was so lucky to have the three of them. He had spent such a long time thinking that Ethan was gone and that he was never going to come back but he had been wrong and Toni really couldn’t be any happier about that. Seeing Ethan again had made him have to confront some things that had remained buried for such a long time but Toni didn’t regret it one bit because at the end of the day dealing with all of that meant that he got to be with the love of his life and that was all that mattered to him. He still couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something missing about that day, though, and as Ethan began to speak before trailing off Toni got the feeling that his husband could see it too. As Ethan finally admitted that he didn’t remember, Toni nodded. “I don’t either and that’s a day I would never forget,” he admitted. “I remember we kept seeing each other in passing around the firehouse but we never got to talk to each other because it was so busy that day. I kept wanting to talk to you but then you showed up here. I feel like you were helping someone, I just can’t remember who,” he explained. He knew it probably sounded crazy but that really was all that he could remember. He couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was missing who was so important to him but he couldn’t for the life of him remember who it was. “You’re right, it doesn’t,” he agreed as Ethan said that it didn’t make sense for someone to be forgotten like that. “I don’t understand why anyone would want to make someone be forgotten.” It really didn’t make any sense but the things Toni had been seeing were enough to make him think that there was someone he had forgotten. “Next time I promise I’ll try not to worry you’ll think I’m crazy and tell you what’s going on straight away,” Toni said, offering Ethan a smile as their eyes met. He hadn’t said anything to Ethan or anyone else before because he had felt certain that he was just imagining things but now he knew that there was something more to it and he knew that he needed to trust himself a little more. “She must be so scared right now,” Toni breathed as Ethan agreed that they had a daughter they didn’t remember for now. There had to be a way they could remember her but more than anything Toni knew that they needed to find a way to help her like she’d asked. “Sounds good to me. We should probably hold off on telling the kids until we have some answers though, what do you think?” he asked. Truth be told Toni was torn, there was a part of him that wanted to tell the kids to see if they remembered anything but at the same time he didn’t want to worry them so it was difficult knowing what would be for the best. “It was,” Toni nodded as Ethan said the drawing looked terrifying. “I get the feeling I’ve seen that face before but I can’t remember that either.” It was frustrating to say the least. Handing Ethan the second drawing, Toni could see the same look on Ethan’s face that Toni was sure had been on his own face when he had seen the girl outside. “That’s why I’m sure there’s someone we’ve forgotten. I know it could be someone playing a trick but it feels like more than that,” he said, not really sure how to explain it. It was just a feeling he had and the more he thought about the girl the more he felt like he loved her. “For us to have forgotten a daughter and Eli to have forgotten a twin, it has to be something big.” Toni had known that Mystic Falls was full of supernaturals when he had moved there with the girls and he had known it would be risky with all the hunters in town but this was something else entirely. Honestly there was a part of him that thought they might be safer just about anywhere else but then again trouble could find them anywhere and they’d made their home here so he knew that none of them would want to leave. “I haven’t either,” he admitted before a thought struck him. “Do you think this could be connected to the strange calls we’ve been getting? Diego mentioned Tommy has been having some too.” They’d had a few where apartments had almost burnt down but no one had known who lived there and Toni couldn’t help but wonder whether there might be other people who had been forgotten as well. “You felt like you knew her?” Toni reported, hoping that might be a good sign. Getting up from the sofa, he moved over to the mantel and picked up the photo of the two of them and the kids on their wedding day before returning to Ethan with it and holding it out to him. “Every time I look at this photo I feel like someone is missing from it. I think that’s her.” Someone had told him that they’d thought he and Ethan were together before it had happened but no matter how hard he tried to remember who that person was, he just couldn’t recall their name or what they looked like but there was something so familiar about the girl. Toni might not remember her but it felt like she belonged with them. ETHAN ALVAREZ

** set before Toni's capture — all he wanted was to receive the love he gave —
Ethan nodded his head in an understanding manner because he felt the same way, too. For a day that important, you’d think that he’d have all the details of how their reunion happened. But the details seemed a little blurry for him despite it all and that in itself was alarming enough. “I’m officially freaked out now.” At the mere thought that there was something out there capable of completely erasing someone from your memories and then swapping those memories with something else that’d make you believe that this person never existed in the first place. “Well, if there’s one thing I learned, some people just don’t need a reason to be evil, or to do evil things.”
“Thank you. Just know that I’ll always do the same thing.” Ethan promised him with a gentle smile resting on his lips. “That poor girl.” Ethan whispered, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “We’ll bring her back. Along with our memories. We just gotta find out what we’re dealing with here.” He nodded his head at Antonio’s next words about them holding off on telling the kids. “Good call. No need to freak them out over something like this until we have the answers.” Ethan added shortly after. “Alright, so whatever we’re looking for is something that can wipe someone completely from memory. I have a feeling there aren’t many of those with such a power out there, so hopefully it’ll be easy to find them.” Ethan had never heard of anything like this before, but he hoped that with a bit of search, he’d be able to find an answer to all of this. He reached for the pencil to write down a few things about what they knew so far, drawing a little arrow pointing to the girl’s face writing out the word: DAUGHTER???.
“For it to be this detailed... It’s definitely something more than just a trick.” Ethan said with a soft hum falling from his lips following. “Exactly. Way too big and powerful.” Ethan placed the pencil down and leaned back, arms crossing in front of his chest as Antonio told him that it had to be something big to have them forget about having a daughter and for Eli to not be aware that she had a twin. Ethan’s eyes widened slightly upon hearing Antonio’s question. “That would make so much sense, actually. That one call about the oven being left running while the apartment is vacant...” Ethan reached for the pencil to write the date that they got that call to investigate it further. “It definitely has to be connected, right?” Ethan gnawed on his bottom lip before he heard his husband’s question about him feeling like he knew her. “Yeah. For a split second, my heart felt all weird.” Ethan watched as Antonio got up, he watched him and when he came back, he had a picture that Ethan was pretty familiar with. “Yeah... Yeah, I can definitely feel the same way about this. It looks so empty. Especially here.” The photo was zoomed out, leaving room for an additional person. He pointed to the vacant area before he looked over at Antonio.
“Wait... Wait, you said you saw this... thing. That means they’re coming for you, too?” Ethan nearly dropped the photo upon realizing. “They’re going to wipe you from our memories like they did with our kid?” Ethan asked, rising from his feet with a shake of his head. “Hell no. I’m not letting that happen.” Ethan carefully placed the photo down before he started making his way to the door of the house, locking it and securing it well before he started making his way to all the possible windows to lock them, peering outside to see if he could see anything strange out there before he adjusted the blinds to shut them entirely. “If they want to get to you, they’re gonna have to go through me first.”

“You and me both,” Toni nodded as Ethan said that he was officially freaked out now. Toni had tried thinking back to the day Ethan came back into his life so many times because it felt like something was missing from the memory but he couldn’t for the life of him think what it was. He had spent decades believing Ethan to be dead and Toni had been miserable during that time so he knew that he never would have forgotten how they were reunited under normal circumstances. There had to be something powerful at play here that had altered that memory and he was pretty sure that the girl he had seen was tied to it all as well. “I guess you’ve got a point there. This is probably one of those times but the fact that someone even has the power to do that is scary,” he admitted. If they had managed to erase a daughter from their lives and memories then there was no telling who else might have been taken too. Toni knew that he could trust Ethan completely, he had done ever since they fought in the war together and it had been the same ever since Ethan came back into his life. He knew he shouldn’t have kept what was going on from Ethan but the truth was that Toni really had thought that he was starting to lose his mind and he hadn’t known how to put it into words. Knowing that Ethan believed him without question meant the world to him and Toni knew that he wasn’t going to make that same mistake again. “I know you will,” Toni said, a smile touching his lips as Ethan said that he would always tell him what was going on straight away as well. Toni sighed as Ethan spoke again. “I hate not being able to help her right now,” he admitted before nodding as Ethan said that they would find a way to bring her back along with their memories. “I hope so, we can’t abandon her now,” he said gently. He didn’t remember the girl that much but he remembered the feeling he’d had when he looked at her. It was the same sense of unconditional love that he felt whenever he looked at Eli or Elias and he knew that they needed to find a way to help her. “There’s a part of me that wants to ask if they remember anything or have noticed anything unusual but I think they would have said if they had,” Toni shrugged. Eli had always been able to talk to him about anything and Elias knew that he could talk to them as well so Toni trusted that they would have told them if they thought that there was something going on. He felt bad for keeping this from the kids but he really didn’t want to worry them until they knew what was going on and how to fix it. “Hopefully. I’ve never heard of anything like that before but given what they can do, that’s not really surprising,” he admitted, watching as Ethan wrote the word daughter followed by some question marks on the drawing he had done of the girl he had seen. “It’s crazy but it feels like her name is on the tip of my tongue.” He couldn’t seem to recall what it was, though, no matter how hard he tried. “The more I look at that, the more I’m certain that she is our daughter. Whoever did this had better not have hurt her,” he said, knowing that if they had then he would find a way to make them pay. “Definitely way too powerful,” he agreed. Toni didn’t know who could have done this but he knew that they needed to figure it out and bring their daughter home where she belonged. As Ethan mentioned the call about the oven being left on while the place was empty, Toni nodded. “I think you’re right, it has to all be connected. There have been other calls just like that, I think this has been going on for a while,” Toni admitted. Strange things always happened in Mystic Falls but this was completely different and he knew that he wasn’t going to stop until they found a way to bring their daughter back. “I felt that way when I first saw her too,” Toni nodded. “It probably sounds crazy since I don’t remember her but I feel like I love her the same way I do Eli and Elias.” How he could love someone he didn’t remember he had no idea but that was the feeling he had. “It does. She hasn’t just been erased from our memories, it’s like every trace of her has been removed.” Whatever had done it had to be really powerful and Toni knew that they wouldn’t be easy to stop but they had to find a way. As Ethan asked whether seeing them meant that they were coming for him too, Toni’s face fell. “I don’t know if that’s how they choose who they take, maybe,” he breathed. He hadn’t really thought about it but it would definitely make sense and just thinking about it was terrifying. Toni’s heart sank as Ethan asked if he was going to be wiped from their memories just like their daughter had been. It wasn’t something that he wanted to think about but it was something that was probably already out of his hands. “I think that’s what they do when they take people, it would explain why we don’t remember her and why everyone thought that apartment was empty,” he said, doing his best to keep his voice from shaking. In a way knowing that he might not only be taken from his family but that they might also be made to forget him was worse than it just happening, now Toni was going to be left looking over his shoulder at every turn and he could see from the look on Ethan’s face that he wasn’t going to be any better. All he could do was watch as Ethan locked the door and windows before closing the blinds and when he stopped, Toni moved over to Ethan and ran his hands down his husband’s arms gently before taking both of Ethan’s hands in his. “I don’t think I’ve said this enough but you’re really hot when you’re protective,” he said, needing to try and remove a little of the tension if he could. “I love you for this but we have no idea how this works and I don’t want them taking you as well,” he said, his eyes fixed on Ethan’s as he spoke. “If something happens to me, Eli and Elias are going to need you to look after them.” Just the thought of not being there for them all was enough to make his heart ache but he knew that it was a very real possibility. “I hate to say this but if it means making sure the kids don’t lose both of us then you might have to let me go. Just know that if something happens I’ll find our daughter and I’ll spend every moment fighting to get us back home.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

** set before Toni's capture — all he wanted was to receive the love he gave —
Evil existed well beyond the walls of Mystic Falls. But sometimes it felt like all the evil in the world was concentrated in this town. There was always something to be wary of and despite already having their hands full with everything else, it seems like Mystic Falls was going to keep throwing things their way. Ethan nodded his head in agreement with Antonio when he mentioned that the fact that someone has the power to erase someone completely from memory was scary. “Yeah...” Ethan trailed off, glancing over at the drawing of the thing that Antonio had seen earlier. It was pretty sad to think that they had a daughter out there, somewhere they aren’t able to reach, probably waiting for them to find her and bring her home. It made his heart feel heavy in his chest and he let out a quiet sigh. “I know we’ll bring her home.” Ethan said with a nod of his head following. The fact that Antonio was starting to see these flickers of that young girl meant that something was falling apart. Maybe it was the “spell” that those things had placed on them, or maybe it was something else entirely. But, he knew that what they had done wasn’t irreversible. Otherwise, Toni wouldn’t have gotten those flashes of the young girl in the first place. “Exactly, and you know that I’m terrible at lying, so if they start asking us questions, I’ll spill everything.” Ethan liked to think that he’d gotten somewhat better at telling “white lies”, but honestly, his eyes are too revealing, same with his body language.
Ethan knew that things were only going to get complicated from there, though. He knew they had a big task at hand and that was finding out how to bring their daughter back home, where she belongs. Ethan looked over at Antonio when he told him that he can feel her name on the tip of his tongue, he scooted a little bit closer as if anticipating the moment that the name would eventually spill out but it seemed like whatever those things had done to alter their memories was too strong to break through. “It’s okay. We’ll figure it out.” Ethan assured him before he looked over at the drawing of the young girl. “She has your eyes.” Ethan commented, gnawing on his bottom lip. She bore resemblance to Adelina, too. It was crazy to think that Adelina had a twin out there that absolutely no one can remember. Ethan’s stomach plummeted at the thought that those things had hurt their kid. It left a sour taste on his tongue and a burning desire to get up and look for her right now to eliminate any possibility of her getting hurt, but he knew that it won’t be that easy to find her, or remember her.
“If there’s one thing I know about Diego and Tommy is that they’re probably looking into this, too. We can reach out, see what they know.” Ethan offered with a quick nod of his head following. Tommy does have ties with the police station, so he will be able to look into this on a deeper level while they hit the libraries to figure out what they are up against. He nodded his head in agreement with Antonio not long after when he said that this has been going on for a while. It would make sense — they wouldn’t have an idea because of the whole memory wiping part, so it gave those... things the perfect chance to keep going and to keep ruining lives.
Ethan was quiet as he listened to Antonio explain that he felt the same way when he first saw her, too. He listened intently with a sad smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Hey, we’ll bring her back, alright? So hang onto that love. I bet it’s the answer to remembering her.” Ethan assured him in a quiet voice, knowing that they will find a way to bring her back. But then, the conversation shifted when Ethan remembered why they were having this conversation, to begin with. Antonio had seen it. Ethan wasn’t sure if this was how they took people for certain, but it didn’t feel like a good omen, either. It felt like something that they should be wary of. “No.” Ethan shook his head stubbornly because he was not going to allow some ghostly looking cowboy in a stupid hat to take his husband away.
Although he stopped from his futile attempt at closing all the blinds and locking all the doors and windows when he felt Antonio’s hands on his arms. He turned to look at Antonio with a hint of fear in his eyes but it evaporated when he heard Antonio’s words and despite himself, he found himself chuckling. Ethan let out a shaky exhale before nodding his head because Antonio was right. Maybe he was overthinking the whole thing — maybe anyone can see them if they just look hard enough. Maybe there was nothing to this.
“Nothing is going to happen to you.” Ethan stressed with a small frown tugging at his features. He shook his head stubbornly at Antonio’s next words when he told him that he might have to let him go. “I can’t lose you, Toni.” He squeezed his hands to deliver the point — he wasn’t going to let go. “I won’t lose you. We can look after the kids together. Don’t make me choose between them and you. Please, I... I just can’t.” Ethan trailed off with another shake of his head as if he was refusing to believe that this situation was taking place. TAG: ANTONIO ALVAREZ

Toni had been born into the supernatural world and he had grown up learning about it from his parents but he had never thought that there would be anything out there powerful enough to wipe people from existence. It was scary to say the least but the fact that he was pretty sure it had happened to their daughter was so much worse. Ever since the day Eli came into his life Toni had done everything he could in order to keep her safe and he knew that he would have done the same for her twin. The more he thought about it the more certain he was becoming that the girl was Eli’s twin and that they had somehow been made to forget all about her. It sounded crazy and Toni had definitely thought that he was losing his mind at first but Ethan believed him and Toni knew that he just had to trust that together they would find a way to fix this. As Ethan said he knew they would bring her home, Toni nodded. He was still a little uncertain but he knew that they weren’t going to give up and in times like these he knew to take strength from his husband. When it came to their kids there wasn’t anything that they wouldn’t do for them and it wasn’t any different for the girl he had seen even if he still couldn’t really remember her. “I think the spare room is hers, it explains why I found those things in there,” Toni said thoughtfully. “I know whoever took her made sure that we would forget her but it feels weird without her now,” he admitted. That seemed strange to say about someone he hardly remembered but the feeling of love he felt for her was growing stronger with each passing moment. “Maybe we should check out the spare room before the kids get home?” he suggested, knowing that it was probably the best place for them to start looking. As Ethan spoke again, Toni couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re right about that, they’d see right through you,” he chuckled. Ethan had never been good at lying but as far as Toni was concerned that was a good thing and he knew that the kids thought so too. Even though he had absolutely no idea how they were going to bring their daughter back to them, Toni knew that they had to do just that. He hoped the fact that he had seen her and was starting to remember certain things would help but he had no idea how the people who took her operated or how any of it worked. One thing he knew for sure, though, was that they were never going to give up on her. She was family and if there was one thing Toni had learned from his parents it was that you don’t turn your back on family no matter what. “I know we will,” Toni nodded as Ethan said that they would figure it out. They had to, the alternative just wasn’t worth thinking about. Following Ethan’s gaze as he looked at the drawing, a smile touched Toni’s lips as Ethan said that the girl had his eyes. “She does, doesn’t she,” he agreed. He hadn’t noticed it before but looking at the drawing now he could see that Ethan was right. It hadn’t been intentional at all, he had just drawn the girl as he had seen her and that had been the outcome. Toni was still trying to remember the girl’s name but it seemed to be just beyond his grasp and it was beyond frustrating. “They’ll definitely be looking into this, they both love a mystery,” Toni nodded. “Hopefully they’ll have found something already but if not then knowing one of our girls is missing will make them look that much harder.” Family meant the world to Diego and Tommy was such a good guy that Toni knew he wouldn’t be able to just stand by and let this go on either. Together they would hopefully be able to figure this all out and bring her back and with any luck they might just find some answers at the Salvatore School as well. Toni knew they should check the library and see if the books there held any answers and he knew they were also going to have to talk to the staff to see whether they had heard anything about all of this. He knew that bringing the girl back might not be easy but they would find a way to do it. As Ethan said that he needed to hang onto the love he felt for her because it was likely the key to remembering her, Toni nodded. “I will,” he promised as he looked at the picture he had drawn of the girl once more. “We’ll find a way to bring Ela home,” he nodded before realising what he’d said. “Ela, that’s her name,” he said, a small smile touching his lips at the memory. “I don’t remember what it’s short for but I’m sure that’s who she is to us.” Slowly the pieces seemed to be starting to fall into place and Toni couldn’t help but feel more determined than ever to bring her back where she belonged. It became clear from the way that Ethan started locking the windows and doors that he didn’t want anything to happen to him and Toni’s heart ached at the thought of being made to leave Ethan and the kids behind. He had promised that he would never go anywhere that Ethan couldn’t follow and it was a promise that he had always intended on sticking to but he knew that whatever was behind this might end up making him break that promise. He didn’t want to think about that if he could help it though and Toni’s smile returned as he heard Ethan laugh. “You’re hot all the time but especially right now,” Toni said, leaning forward and pressing a light kiss to his husband’s forehead. It was clear that Ethan was struggling right now and Toni was too but it was times like these when they were always able to lean on each other. “I hope you’re right,” Toni breathed as Ethan said that nothing was going to happen to him. “I can’t lose you either,” he said gently as he squeezed Ethan’s hands back. Hearing Ethan pleading with him not to make him choose between the kids and Toni was enough to make Toni’s heart ache and he pulled Ethan into his arms, holding his husband to him tightly. “Hey, it’s going to be okay,” Toni said, quickly blinking away the tears that formed in his eyes. “Hopefully nothing will come of me seeing them. You know that if I’m given any say in the matter then I won’t be going anywhere, not without you,” he assured him. Toni wasn’t so sure it would be that easy but he needed Ethan to know that if he did end up going anywhere then it wouldn’t be by choice. He had wanted Ethan to be prepared in case the worst happened but just seeing how upset his husband was made Toni’s heart ache. “My home is with you and the kids and I’ll do everything I can to keep it that way. I don’t want you to forget me the way we were made to forget Ela.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

** set before Toni's capture — all he wanted was to receive the love he gave —
Ethan was quiet as he listened to Toni explain that he thinks that the spare room belonged to this mysterious daughter that they had. “It would make a lot of sense.” He agreed with Antonio. It broke his heart to know that they had a daughter out there that they couldn’t quite remember but, he knew they will find a solution to this because they weren’t the type of people to leave someone behind. Screw that. “Okay, yeah. We should.” He replied when Toni asked if they should check out the spare room. “Hey, last time I managed to lie for exactly 60 seconds about where the pudding was before I ultimately failed and revealed that it was me who ate it.” Ethan reminded him with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
For now though, it was a matter of looking into this matter and bringing their daughter back home to ensure that she’s exactly where she belongs and not somewhere that they can’t reach. “Okay, yeah. I agree with you.” Ethan nodded his head a few times in agreement with Antonio when he told him that knowing about their missing daughter would have the two of them looking into the matter even harder.
Ethan’s eyes widened slightly when Antonio said a name that sounded so familiar, but so foreign at the same time. “Holy shit.” Ethan breathed out. “Eli and Ela.” Ethan tested out and it felt so natural to say her name, so why couldn’t he remember her? Why did it feel like he was looking at the drawing of someone he knew and loved but somehow he didn’t know her. “It feels so... right. Ela.” Ethan tested again, hoping it would coax the rest of her name out, but nothing came to mind and he let out a quiet defeated sigh.
“Damn it, Toni, stop making me laugh when I’m supposed to be worried right now.” Ethan said with a smile tugging at the corner of his lips already once his chuckle had died down. He closed his eyes for a moment at the feeling of Toni’s lips pressed to his forehead. He let out a shaky exhale before he seemed to melt into the feeling of Toni’s reassuring words before he wrapped his arms tightly around his husband, fingers tightening around the material of his shirt to really showcase how he was not going to let go of him any time soon. “I know, but usually we don’t have a say in these things, do we?” A rhetorical question that he had a feeling they already knew the answer to. “I won’t.” Ethan shook his head stubbornly. “I won’t forget you.” Though the way his voice broke told a different story, it painted the fact that there was a possibility that he wouldn’t be able to fight that “spell” or whatever they put people under to make them forget about their loved ones. “E—Even if I do, I will find a way to remember you. I promise.” And that was a promise that he was not going to break. “If something does happen, I will bring you and Ela home.” Ethan continued with his promises, hugging Toni even tighter as he let out a shaky exhale, already feeling tears collect in his eyes but he quickly blinked them away. “I love you and I will continue loving you no matter what. That ugly looking bastard can’t wipe that away.” TAG: ANTONIO ALVAREZ
