There were times when Ric occasionally found himself thinking back to what his life was like before he’d learned that vampires and the other things that Isobel had spent her life researching were real and he’d made his way to Mystic Falls. Back then life had been so much simpler but the truth was that even with everything that was going on right now, he knew that he wouldn’t want to go back to the way things used to be for anything in the world. He had an incredible wife in Jenna, someone who knew he was flawed and loved him anyway and made him want to be a better person. Add to that the life they had built with the kids and there was no way that Ric would ever want to give that up. He had always wanted to be a dad but he hadn’t felt like that was ever on the cards with Isobel no matter how much he had wanted it. With Jenna, things couldn’t be more different. She had taken Jeremy in after his parents died and Ric had done the same with Kyle and Abigail after their mom died. He hadn’t even known he’d had kids until then but the moment he had learned about them he had sworn to protect them. Josie, Lizzie and Jed had all come along later and it was true that Josie and Lizzie had both been aged up by the spell Henrik had cast but the truth was that he still wouldn’t change having them as teenagers now. Josie hadn’t had a choice about becoming a heretic but from what she’d said when she woke up in transition it was a decision she would have made eventually and Jed, well, there had never been any doubt that he would make the choice to become a hybrid eventually after he and Ben got together. Ric couldn’t shake the feeling that there was someone missing from their blended family unit but Jenna and the kids were all there so he knew that he must just be imaging things. He wanted nothing more than to protect his family but with everything that they were facing he wasn’t sure if that was going to be possible. Ben’s father wanted to kill every supernatural in the world and that included Jenna and the kids. Ric knew there was no way that could happen so he had been doing his own research trying to find a way to stop the angel. He hadn’t found a way to do that just yet but he wasn’t going to give up. Trying to look into that alongside dealing with all of his duties at the school wasn’t easy so needless to say he was glad that the summer was upon them and he had plenty of free time to spend with his family. That day the kids had decided to all go out which meant that he and Jenna had the place to themselves and Ric knew that he wanted to make the most of it. He had gone out earlier and done some shopping, making sure that they had everything that they would need including wine and ice cream, and once he’d returned home he got straight to starting to prepare the meal for them. It had been a while since they had last talked about what the kids were up against so he knew he wouldn’t be surprised if that came up but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t have a good meal and spend some quality time together at the same time. Hearing footsteps approaching, Ric felt a smile touch his lips. “I know what you’re going to say but I’m cooking today so you just put your feet up,” he said before his wife could protest. “The kids are out and school as finished so today is ours.” Jenna was definitely the better cook so Ric didn’t do this too often but this time he knew that he wanted to. “Would you like a glass of wine?” he asked as he turned to look at her and held up the bottle. Jenna couldn't shake off the feeling that something was missing, but oddly enough, no matter how hard she looked, nothing ever looked out of place or even missing in the first place. Everything was okay, for the most part. Well, if you look past the fact that they have a homicidal angel on the loose dead-set on literally killing every supernatural creature in his path. Jenna was worried for her family more than for herself. She just didn't want anything bad to happen to them, so she's been trying to get as many information on the angel as possible. She was storing so much information that she just knew she needed a break and that was when she went to see Alaric. As she approached, her eyes relaxed on him and saw what he was doing which had her brow quirking up in an impressed arch. Her lips parted to let Alaric know that she was here to help, but he beat her to it and pretty much banned her from helping with just a simple statement. Jenna held up her hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, I'm relaxin'." Jenna moved to the living room where she sat leisurely on the couch to prove a point. It was a good thing that the kitchen looked into the living room, so she could see Ric and he could see her. "What are you makin' for us?" Jenna asked, unable to hold her curiosity back for long.
"Music to my ears." Jenna commented when Ric said that today was theirs. At the offer of wine, Jenna was quick to nod her head. "Yeah, I'd like a glass." It would certainly help with the whole mission of relaxing, so she was eager to accept the offer. "I kinda like this queen treatment. I could get used to it." Jenna commented with a pleased smile resting on her lips. "Though I must say, I have a burning urge to get up and help. It's gettin' stronger by the minute, that's my warnin' to ya."

Something felt off right now but Ric couldn’t put his finger on what it was. They still had the threat of Raziel hanging over their heads and Ric knew that it was going to be like that for a while but he honestly hoped that they would find a way to stop the angel soon. Until then all they could do was keep working hard to find a way to keep everyone safe and that was exactly what they were trying to do. Josie and Jed were working with Hope, Ben and the others to find a way to stop him and Ric and Jenna were helping in any way that they could as well. As for the others, Jeremy, Kyle and Abby all seemed to be doing well and Ric knew that that really was all that they could ask for. All of the kids were grown up now and even though for Josie that was only the case because of Henrik’s spell, it still meant that they all had their own lives and they didn’t need their parents around as much as they once had. It might be a strange family to anyone looking from the outside in, they had Ric’s kids from his previous relationship, Jenna’s nephew, their daughter and their adopted son to think about but he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He still couldn’t shake what felt wrong about that picture, though, but he quickly shook it off and turned his attention back to Jenna instead. “You’d better be,” he chuckled, knowing that Jenna deserved the chance to relax for once. That wasn’t something that she tended to do too often but Ric knew that he wanted to try and make sure that she got to do it more often. “I was thinking chicken parmesan but I can change it to something else if you prefer,” he offered, knowing that whatever Jenna felt like having was fine with him. “I couldn’t agree more,” Ric admitted as Jenna said the two of them having the day to themselves was music to her ears. It felt like it had been a while since they had last had the chance to do this and he knew that he wanted to make sure that they got the chance to do this more often, especially since it might just be a matter of time before the world they knew came crashing down around them. There was a time when Ric had thought that anyone who was supernatural was evil and needed to be stopped but he had learned the error of his ways and now he had so many people that he wanted to keep safe from Raziel. “Coming right up,” he nodded as Jenna said that she would like a glass of wine. “In that case I’ll have to spoil you like this more often,” he grinned, grabbing a glass from the cupboard and pouring some wine into it before making his way through to the lounge and holding the glass out to her. “Don’t you dare, you stay right where you are,” he said, kissing the top of her head before returning to the kitchen. “If you want something to do you can decide what we’re going to do with the rest of the day, this is as far as I got,” he chuckled. Jenna released a soft hum at that. "That sounds absolutely delicious. Color me excited to eat it." Jenna said with a grin tugging at the corner of her lips as she watched Alaric work his magic to get the meal prepared for the two of them. "No, no, I don't need it changed to anything else. It sounds perfect." Jenna assured him not long after. "Got my stomach grumbling already." Jenna added a moment later with a chuckle falling from her lips not long after.
Jenna beamed when Alaric told her that her drink was coming right up. "Thank you, kind sir." She said a moment later with the same softness in the tone of her voice still. "You won't hear a single complaint from me if you do so." Jenna added a moment later. "Except for the part where I don't do anything, though. It feels really weird." Jenna admitted with yet another chuckle falling from her lips. Taking care of her family didn't feel like a chore. It felt like something she wanted to do. She loved them so much that she couldn't help but want to always be there for them, to always take care of them, no matter how busy she was during the day. Jenna reached for the glass, whispering yet another 'thank you' and when he kissed the top of her head, her expression softened even further. "Okay, okay, I'm not moving." Jenna held up her other hand in a mock surrender gesture with a soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"Oooh, say no more." Jenna took a sip from her wine as she seemed to think what they could possibly do with their time today. "Give me a bit to think about this and I'm sure I'll be able to come up with somethin'." Jenna said with a soft smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "In the meantime, we can just enjoy our time together like this. It's more than fulfilling for me."

“Looks like that’s settled then,” Ric chuckled as Jenna said that what he’d suggested sounded delicious. It felt like they didn’t get to do this often enough for his liking, between working at the school and raising the kids life had kept them pretty busy but the kids were older now and things had settled down at the school so he hoped that they would get to start doing this much more often. Josie and Jed were both doing well and they were happy, so where Kyle, Abby and Jeremy. Ric couldn’t shake the feeling that he was missing something but he couldn’t for the life of him put his finger on what it was so he pushed it out of his mind and got to work making dinner for them. “We can’t have that last too long, I’ll have to be quick,” he grinned as Jenna said that it had her stomach grumbling already. Even now there were still times when Ric found himself wondering just how he had managed to get this lucky, the family he and Jenna had and the life they had built together had always seemed so far out of reach before but now it was real and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Holding the glass of wine out to Jenna, Ric thought about it for a moment as she said that it felt weird not doing anything. “How about next time we cook together then?” he suggested. The idea behind him cooking was so that Jenna could have the chance to put her feet up and relax for a while but he should have known that she would start getting a little antsy. Jenna was used to being on the go all the time just like he was so he knew that they could find a compromise. As Jenna said she wasn’t moving, Ric felt a smile touch his lips. “Good. I know it isn’t easy but you deserve the chance to take it easy for once.” She was always running around after him and the kids both at home and at the school so Ric knew that he wanted to make sure that Jenna was the one being taken care of for once. Taking a sip of his own drink, Ric nodded as Jenna said that she would come up with something once she’d had some time to think about it. “I hoped you would say that,” he admitted. “We don’t even have to stay here all day if you don’t want to, there’s nothing stopping us,” he added, knowing that he would be happy doing anything as long as he got to spend some time with his wife. “It is for me as well,” he nodded, moving about the kitchen as he worked. It wasn’t long before the food was cooking and he made his way over to Jenna and sat down next to her before wrapping his arm around her. “It’s been far too long since we last did this.”JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna grinned at Ric's words before nodding her head a few times. "I guess I'll be patient." Jenna teased, keeping her eyes on Ric as he worked all while enjoying her drink. "Absolutely. We'll find a recipe that we can work on together. I will surf the internet as the cool kids phrase it these days and see what we can make. I'm feeling a new recipe." Jenna said with the same grin resting on her lips.
Jenna's expression softened at Ric's words but she knew that he was right and she honestly loved being able to take a moment to herself like this and just let someone else do the work even though she felt like she was programmed to be the one moving around and doing all the work and it rarely ever felt tiring, especially to her. She found comfort in taking care of her loved ones. It filled her with warmth to know that she was taking good care of them, so it rarely ever felt like it was hard work. "Thank you, but it honestly feels good to take care of you guys. It doesn't feel like it's pressuring me or anything like that." Jenna admitted in a soft voice as she spoke, her eyes relaxing on Ric once again.
"I love the sound of that." Jenna admitted with an excited smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "The day is still young so I'm sure we'll figure out what to do." Jenna added with a nod of her head following not long after. "Right? We've gotten so busy with the kids and the school and everything else that we just forgot to do something like this more often. But I'm glad we're starting again now. I really am." Jenna took yet another sip from her drink not long after, her eyes relaxing on Alaric with ease. "Thank you, Ric, for doing this."

“Are you sure you’re going to be able to manage that?” Ric teased. Truth be told Jenna had a lot more patience than he did sometimes but he still couldn’t resist teasing his wife nonetheless. Jenna was such an amazing person and she always put others before herself and that was why Ric wanted to do something special for her for a change. Meeting her had turned his life around and Ric wasn’t always the best at showing how much that meant to him but he was trying. Jenna had given him the life and family he had always wanted but he had never thought he would get after Isobel left and he knew better than to take any of that for granted. “Of course you are,” he chuckled as Jenna said she was feeling a new recipe. “I know you’ll find one that’s great.” Jenna was always better at that kind of thing than he was. Ric knew that Jenna liked taking care of everyone, he saw it day after day both at work and at home, but he knew that he needed to make sure he pulled his own weight. They had their own kids to look after as well as the ones they taught at the school but they also needed to take care of themselves as well and that was what the evening was all about. “I know. I know how worried you were about taking care of Jeremy at first but you’re so good at it,” he said gently. He knew the pressure Jenna had been under when she became Jeremy’s legal guardian and there had been some slip ups along the way but she had worked it out in the end and Ric was so proud of her for that. She had started helping him with Kyle and Abby as soon as they came into his life and then Josie came along and they took in Jed. He had seen the way Jenna was in her element now and he was so glad about that. “I do too,” Ric said, an easy smile forming on his face as Jenna said that she loves the idea of going out for a while. “Definitely, even if we just get in the car and drive and see where we end up,” he nodded. They would find something to do, he was certain of that, and he knew that it would end up being a good day. “I am too. We’ll make this a regular thing, we deserve to have some time just for us.” It was so easy to get wrapped up in work and the kids but he and Jenna were a couple and he knew that he wanted to make sure that they had more time to do things like this alone together. As Jenna thanked him, Ric made his way over to her and let his hand rest against the back of her head before kissing her forehead gently. “You’re welcome,” he said before returning to check on the food. “Looks like it’s about done,” he said as he started dishing up, piling food onto two plates and carrying both over to the table so they could eat. Jenna pretended to think for a moment after hearing his question. "Well, if you're asking if you should be getting worried about me possibly eating everything in sight within the next few moments... Yes. You should be." Jenna joked as she lifted her wine glass to her lips to take a quick sip. "Looks like it's settled then." Jenna said with a soft smile resting on his lips. They'll definitely make a good date night out of that, too.
"God. I think I have convinced myself that if I can push through Jeremy's emo phase and survive it to tell the tale, then I can pretty much do anything." Jenna said with a brief chuckle following, shaking her head slightly at the reminder of Jeremy's phase. She knew that the kid was hurting, so she never really held it against him. "So are you, by the way." She added a moment later, wanting Ric to know she thought the same way of him.
"Exactly. It's not where we are that makes the experience one to remember. It's who we are with. So I'm really not concerned about that." Jenna shrugged her shoulders, watching Alaric for a few moments. She beamed at the thought of them doing this regularly. "Yum, yum, yum. Get in my tummy. Please." Jenna was all too happy to help set everything down before she quickly realized what she was doing and instead sat back down and waited for Ric to put the servings on the plate. "Oh, honey, this smells absolutely divine. I wish I could capture this scent forever." Jenna had to resist leaning too close to really take in the appetizing smell. "Shall we?" Dig in, she meant.

"I knew it. Even you can only be patient for so long," Ric chuckled. He knew that Jenna was looking forward to the meal and the truth was that he was too. "You're doing better than Jed would be at least, it was a wonder the food even made it to the table sometimes with him around," he added with a grin. Ric really loved their son and he knew that Jenna did too but Jed definitely would eat everything in sight without thinking twice about it. "It won't be too much longer," he assured her, knowing that it would be good for them to be able to sit down and have something to eat just the two of them for once. It felt like a long time since they had last done that and Ric knew that they definitely needed to make it a more regular thing. They both loved their family but they also loved each other and Ric knew that he didn't want that to get lost in everything else. "Jeremy's emo phase was pretty extreme, I think you probably can," Ric chuckled. He had done his best to help Jeremy when he got to town but the truth was that Jenna had done a great job with him. She had helped him turn his life around and Ric was confident that Jeremy would have pulled through even without the compulsion that Damon had used on Jeremy after Vicki died. As Jenna said that he was good at looking after people too, Ric felt a smile touch his lips. "Thanks, I'm learning from the best," he grinned. He had learned how to deal with his students long before he arrived in Mystic Falls but it was only through spending time with Jenna and seeing how she was around Jeremy that he had learned how to be a parent and that had helped him to no end when Kyle and Abby came into his life. She had been there with him every step of the way and Ric knew that he wouldn't have been able to get through any of this without her support. "Exactly. A spontaneous road trip actually sounds pretty good," Ric admitted. He liked the idea of just getting in the car and seeing where they ended up, they always had so much on their plates these days so it would be good to just get away from all of that for a while. Ric knew that he wouldn't change their family for anything in the world but things could get pretty hectic at home sometimes with so many of them living under one roof and between that and everything that was going on at the school and with Raziel, it really was a lot. He knew that no matter what happened they would face it together though, the same way they always did. It wasn't much longer before the food was done and Rc dished it up onto the plates before carrying everything over to the table. "I'm glad you approve," he grinned as he took his seat and took a sip of his drink. "Lets, I'm starving," he nodded as he began tucking into his meal. JENNA SALTZMAN
