Keeping a low profile was easier when there were probably only a handful of people in the entire town who knew your name. As a Salvatore it was impossible. The Salvatores had been one of the corner stones here since the town had been founded. Those Salvatore boys went and opened a school too – ’so generous!’ The elderly woman at the library’s information desk had put a hand over her heart as she’d said it. Heaping on the praise so thick that Enzo was sure he’d choke on it. The Salvatores might have been splashing their money around now, but a trillion dollars wouldn’t make up for the damage they’d already done.
Teeth, white and human blunt, flashed at her as he agreed with a warmth that had barely coated his words. Was Damon still trying to make up for a guilty conscience or had the switch been flipped in those last fiery moments, as he’d screamed across the room, trying to convince him to stick to the plan, and remained off for the years he’d continued to rot there.
She’d been infinitely helpful. There were no phone directory – apparently everything these days was online. His confused expression had her chuckling. She’d swung her screen around (far bigger than the one Aurora had shown him on her phone), bringing up a map of Mystic Falls to point out all those Salvatore highlights. A tap of one gnarled finger against it – the old Salvatore estate out in the woods – another to show where the school was (private, of course), a third to pinpoint the Salvatore Boarding House. Apparently both of the brothers lived there.
The warning to watch out for the slick black Camaro to mark the place out for him had left him driving past the first time. There hadn’t been one, which didn’t bode well for finding Damon, but maybe this was better. Make it a real surprise when he finally strolled through that door.
Enzo climbed from the car that had belonged to the girl he’d compelled into leaving town. It rocked on its wheels, its suspension shot, but it’s engine still running well enough that he hadn’t been restricted by transport as well as the sun that had already dipped behind the trees that seemed to grow thick as walls around the town. He skimmed a glance over the windows as he approached the door. If the Augustines had half a braincell not focused on how many different ways they could make him hurt they would’ve ended up waiting right here.
He pasted on a smile again, bright, warm, fake as the old woman’s teeth had been. The sound of the bell rang through the house, the footsteps seeming to take their time approaching after that. Enzo’s smile twitched a little brighter. ”Stefan Salvatore, I presume … unless I’ve been misdirected. This is the Salvatore Boarding House, isn’t it?” Dark eyes narrowed faintly, drifting over Stefan’s shoulder, as if the old woman hadn’t helpfully pulled up a photo for him. Just in case.

There were always going to be threats in Mystic Falls, Stefan had resigned himself to that fact a long time ago, but it was still possible to build a good life there as well. He and Damon were born in the town and it was where they had become vampires but more than that, it was where they had become brothers again as well. Now Damon was happy with Claire, the whole Katherine saga finally behind him at last, and Stefan was happy with Bonnie. That one had taken him by surprise, he hadn’t expected to develop feelings for her while she was away looking after her dad but that was exactly what had happened. They had talked on the phone all the time and they had grown close but it was only when she returned to town that something had happened between them. Stefan hadn’t thought that she would feel the same way he did or that she would want something more with him given their history but she wanted to be with him as well and they were making it work. Stefan hoped that nothing was going to come along and burst their bubble but deep down he knew that at some point it would so he was doing his best to make the most of this while it lasted. No matter what happened he knew that they would face it together and that was all that mattered. Right now Stefan had some free time on his hands and he had decided to spend it at the Boarding House. He knew he would end up seeing Bonnie that evening but for now it was thoughts of the future that were on Stefan’s mind. Graduation would be upon them before they knew it and he wasn’t too sure what he was going to do when that happened but he knew that he needed to figure something out. It probably seemed strange that a vampire was contemplating the future when he had already lived so many different lives already but being in Mystic Falls had given him the chance to be the real him and Stefan knew that he wanted to figure out something that would honour that. He knew that he could do nothing like Damon, after all they had enough money to keep them going for a long time, but Stefan had never been any good at that. He preferred to keep busy so he knew that he would come up with something. He had thought about asking Ric if there were any jobs going at the school but there was a part of him that was worried that Ric might feel obligated to come up with something for him. Stefan and Damon had had the school built on the land that their former home had once stood on and Ric and Jenna had decided to use their name for the place to reflect that when they had decided to open the school but it had been a gift to the two of them so Stefan knew that he didn’t want to take advantage. For now Stefan knew that he needed to just focus on enjoying his free time while it lasted but he soon snapped out of it when the bell rang. Making his way to the front of the house, he was surprised to find an unfamiliar man standing before him. The house was safeguarded against other vampires, it had been put into Ric’s name years ago so they didn’t have to worry about any unexpected visitors who meant them harm, but Stefan wasn’t sure what this guy’s deal was just yet. The smile seemed fake but Stefan knew that he needed to get to the bottom of it anyway and he nodded as the guy gave not just his name but the name of the house as well. “That’s right, and you are?” he asked, eyeing the guy carefully as he spoke. His freedom had gone up in smoke. Enzo had seen his end coming as Damon had blurred out of the room, breaking a promise they’d both been working their way towards. The cage he’d been in should’ve been his pyre. It was luck – bad luck he’d considered it at times – that he’d been freed before he’d been left a pile of ash on the floor. Damon probably wouldn’t have seen it the same way. At the very last his only concern had been his own neck. If it hadn’t been he’d have come back, broken him out like they’d originally planned. From time to time he’d wondered whether Damon had died, if there was an excuse for his being left to rot, but of course there hadn’t been. Damon had been out here, living it up for all those years, forgetting all about what had happened in the lab. Well, until now.
The proverbial bad penny had now turned up for a cup of tea and a little talk. Maybe there was a little relief in the pit of his stomach, alongside the irritation, that it wasn’t Damon standing there in the doorway when it had opened. He could drag this out, the same way Damon had. Let him suffer bit by bit like the friend he’d left behind. The way the guy eyed him made it clear that trust didn’t come easily to either Salvatore brother – probably for good reason if what Aurora had told him about this town and it’s supernatural problem was to be believed. She’d been certain about the trouble that lurked here, some of it perpetrated by her own brother and the little vampire army she’d said he controlled. Enzo continued to smile back. That army would come in handy if he could work his way into it – both for dealing with Damon and his little witch problem.
Dark brows hitching, Enzo tried to inject a little innocence into his expression. He made a show out of brushing his hand down the front of his jacket before he held it out. ”Enzo St. John. I won’t take it personally if you don’t know the name. I don’t imagine Damon’s said it aloud in a while.” In a few decades to be exact. Put it out of your mind and it wouldn’t bother your conscience over much. Chiara had been the queen of remaining above any sort of guilt that way. It was the only way she’d ruled their neighbourhood for so long – remaining heartless while those around her strangled themselves with their own consciences. She’d have them emptying their back accounts to avoid their crimes becoming public. Undoubtedly Damon wouldn’t cave that way.
Enzo’s smile twitched as he stopped bothering to see deeper into the house. If Damon was there and heard his voice he’d likely end up just cowering away from the ghosts of his past anyway. ”We’re old friends. It’s been a while though. I just got back to town and well, I thought maybe it was time for a catch up.” They weren’t lies in the traditional sense but the friendly air he lent to his tone certainly was. ”I didn’t see his car when I pulled up. Is he here?” He was already anticipating a no, but as long as he got an invite into the house his failure might be worth the effort all the same.
