Jacob and Lucy Salvatore were born in January 1864 and are the twin son and daughter of Stefan and Valerie Tulle.
Stefan and Valerie met at the Mystic Falls County Fair in March 1863 when she was sent by his mother Lily to check on him following her “death” but it quickly turned into more than that. There was an instant connection between the two of them and they fell in love. Their relationship soon turned physical and several weeks after the fair they planned to run away together. Before she went to meet up with Stefan at the place they had agreed, Valerie learned she was pregnant with not just one but two babies and she was delighted. Together they were going to be a family but that joy was short lived because before she could meet up with Stefan so that they could start their new lives together she ran into Lily’s lover, Julian, who was outraged at the idea of Valerie leaving their family. He knew that she was pregnant and began to beat her in the hope that it would cause her to have a miscarriage but Valerie was prepared. With a few friends nearby, they were able to use magic to get the twins to safety and they were carried to full term by a surrogate. Valerie’s friends never learned what happened to her after that as she was taken away by Julian and she never learned whether or not the spell was actually successful. Stefan was left with no knowledge of the fact that Valerie had learned that she was pregnant or that she had planned on meeting him but couldn’t, instead he was left thinking that she had played him and hadn’t planned on running away with him after all so he returned home.
The twins were raised in Mystic Falls by their surrogate mother and they had a happy, normal childhood although when they were old enough they were told the truth about who their parents were and what had really happened. Growing up they both appeared to be human like their dad and it wasn’t until much later in their lives that they learned the truth. When they were seventeen years old their surrogate mother died leaving the twins completely alone in the world. They started looking into what had happened to their parents and learned that Stefan had become a vampire although to this day they still don’t know what has happened to their mother. They travelled the country together for the next few years hoping to find him, both taking on odd jobs to try and make ends meet, before eventually settling down in East Ridge, Tennessee for a while. It was there that Lucy met Martin Jones, the man who would change the course of their lives forever.
With only one another to count on, the twins were incredibly close but shortly after their twenty second birthday Lucy caught the attention of Martin and even though she had no interest in him whatsoever, he refused to take no for an answer. He approached Jacob in the hopes of either gaining his blessing or learning how to win his sister around but Jacob refused to do either. Feeling angry and threatened by how close the siblings were, Martin attacked Jacob and left him for dead, knowing that if Jacob was going to stand in their way then he would simply eliminate the problem and be the one to pick up the pieces after he was gone. Naturally it didn’t go to plan as Stefan was in town at the time and saw what had happened. He fed Jacob some of his blood and as the two spoke he only gave his first name. Stefan then compelled Jacob to forget him and leave town for his own safety before he had the chance ask any questions, afraid that the man who had attacked him might return. Unable to fight the compulsion, Jacob did as he was told but Martin quickly learned that Jacob was still alive and decided to finish the job.
Breaking into the home that the Jacob and Lucy shared, Martin shot Jacob before making it look like a random home invasion and once again leaving him for dead. The plan was the same, to swoop in and console Lucy following the death of the only family she had left but it didn’t work out that way. Due to the fact that Jacob had vampire blood in his system, when Lucy returned home to find her brother dead a few hours later it wasn’t long before he awoke in transition. To begin with Jacob was able to fight the urge to feed, knowing that even though he didn’t understand what was happening he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he gave into the temptation and hurt his sister, but when Martin turned up hoping to comfort Lucy it was a completely different story. Instead he found Jacob alive and, in shock, he attacked. Realising instantly what had happened and who was responsible for killing her brother, Lucy reacted on instinct and grabbed Jacob’s hand, siphoning the magic from him and using it to push Martin backwards so that he couldn’t hurt her brother again. That was the first time Lucy had ever used magic or learned that she had the ability to do so. Martin fell and hit his head against the corner of a nearby cabinet before slumping to the ground, a pool of blood forming around him. Jacob tried to see if Martin was still alive but there was no pulse and that close to the blood the temptation was too great. Dipping his fingers in Martin’s blood, he tasted it for the first time and completed the transition, soon feeling the bloodlust take over until every drop of blood had been consumed. Turning to his sister in horror, they made a pact that they would always stick together no matter what, unaware of the Ripper and siphoner genes that seemed buried in their family’s past.
History, it seemed, was doomed to repeat itself with the Salvatore men in more ways than one because rumours circulating of Jacob’s death meant that he and Lucy had to disappear into the night leaving Jacob unaware that the girl he had fallen for, Margaret Avery, had fallen pregnant with his child and a few months later gave birth to a baby boy. Jacob’s “death” and Lucy’s disappearance meant that Margaret was left to raise her child alone, even giving him her own surname rather than his father’s out of fear that Martin’s friends would target his son too, but she filled his head with as many true stories of his father as she could.
Together Lucy and Jacob travelled across the country learning all they could about vampires and witches and Lucy siphoned magic from Jacob only ever with his consent when she needed to use magic. Along the way she managed to make a daylight ring for her brother and found a spell that could temporarily stop her aging before eventually discovering and casting the immortality spell so that she and Jacob could stay together. Eventually their travels brought them to Mystic Falls in the early 1900s, the town that held so much history for their parents, and with the compulsion Stefan had used on Jacob broken after he transitioned into a vampire they were able to piece together from an old picture of Stefan and Damon together that the man whose blood had turned Jacob was actually their father. Ever since they have been travelling the country searching for him and that search has now brought them to Mystic Falls once again where their dream of finally finding their father is about to come true.
Lucy and Jacob found their father just over two years ago and even though Stefan was shocked at first when he learned that he is a father to not just one but two children and that he missed out on so much of their lives he is doing his best to be there for them both now. I would love for him to become close with both of them and he would even offer to let them stay at the Boarding House if they wanted to.
Both of these characters are good and Jacob will be doing his best to fight off the Ripper gene. As far as personality goes Jacob is very much like Stefan, he can be quite reserved but wants to help people and atone for the wrongs he has done in the past.
