Elias had known pain before but this was something new entirely. Growing up in the foster system he’d had to deal with kids who were bullies and he had also dealt with abusive foster parents but now he had found his forever home and he had honestly thought that he had left those days behind him. He was happy living with his dads and sisters and he was happy attending the Salvatore College. For the first time in his life things were going well and he had been doing his best to make the most of that while it lasted. In the past whenever something good had happened he had always felt like it was only a matter of time before the rug was pulled out from underneath him again and it had always worked out like that but now things were different. Now he had a family that loved him and with Kelly back in his life as well he honestly felt like he had everything that he needed. Elias had never considered himself to be lucky before but now he did and it was a feeling that he knew that he didn’t want to let go of. Unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to last, though. Elias had found out that he was a phoenix when he had risen from the ashes after being killed by some people that his foster parents had owed money to. They had ended up getting in too deep and even though he had done his best to stay out of it, they had dragged him into it anyway. He had been forced to work for the men to try and pay off the debt that his foster parents had racked up and he had ended up dying alongside them when the men had had enough of his foster parents messing up and had decided to cut their losses. Thankfully his dads had found him and they had known exactly what was happening when he had come back to life. They had explained everything to him and they had given him the first safe home that he’d had in a really long time. Elias had no idea how they were going to react when he got home but he knew that he just had to hope that they wouldn’t turn him away. Earlier he had ended up running into the men that had killed him and they hadn’t been too happy to see him. They had started attacking him and to start with he had been able to hold his own but there were too many of them and the rods they had used were made of iron so slowly but surely they had gotten the better of him. They had beaten him up and thrown him from a moving car a few blocks away from his home. There wasn’t anyone around which was something that Elias was grateful for but it took him a while to make it back home. The men had made it clear that they weren’t done with him yet, they were going to keep coming after him until he agreed to work for them again and Elias didn’t doubt that if they weren’t able to break him they would go after the people he loved. Right now he had no idea what he was going to do but as he stumbled through the door of his home he couldn’t even bring himself to think about that, his legs giving way beneath him as he collapsed on the floor. His breathing was shallow as his eyes drifted shut, not even enough strength left to call out to anyone. Moments later Adelina appeared after hearing the door but not seeing anyone and he could hear the concern in her voice. “Elias?!” she cried as she rushed over to him. “Elias is hurt!” she called out, not sure who would hear her first. “Stay with me Elias, I’ve got you,” she breathed, blinking away her tears as she lifted his arm over her shoulders and helped him into the living room. — which brings us back to the hero's shoulders —
Ethan's heart dropped to his feet when he heard Adelina yell that Elias was hurt. He immediately got up from where he was and rushed to them. He never thought that his night would steer in this direction and but as his eyes relax upon Elias, he feels as though his heart was being torn to shreds right before his eyes. The only question running through his mind was: why? Why him? Why did it have to be his kid? Adelina moved him to the living room where Ethan rushed to the couch to clear it of the cushions so that she could lay him down.
Ethan's hand reached out for Elias' as soon as possible, his eyes on his son's face. He looked like he'd been through hell and back and it broke Ethan's heart to pieces. "What happened to you? Did someone do this to you?" Ethan asked, the words feeling heavy on his tongue as he watched Elias carefully, his son's hand still in his own. "Please don't go anywhere, okay? Stay with us. You're safe now." Ethan had no idea what had happened that led to this but he longed to understand. "I won't let anything bad happen to you, kid. I promise, okay? So stay with us."
Ethan's day had been going normally at first. It started with him coming back from work and spending time with his family. Then, he got up to enjoy a warm cup of tea to warm himself up because Mystic Falls certainly got cold in Winter. Everything was going okay and even moments before Adelina had found Elias outside, he'd been in the bedroom where he was watching a movie that brought back many fond memories. Nothing could ever warn him of the way his night would change one-eighty degrees. Still, he didn't care anymore about what he'd been doing prior to finding Elias like this. All he cared about was figuring out what had happened to Elias.

Elias had felt safe ever since he had been taken in by Toni and Ethan. Becoming a part of their family had made him feel almost like the horrors of his past had never happened but they had still plagued him at times nonetheless. At first he had felt surprised that they had even wanted to take him in after learning what had happened and the fact that he had been working for the men in order to pay off some of his foster parents’ debts but they hadn’t waivered in their decision. They had given him a home, the first true home he’d ever had, and he was beyond grateful to them for that. A part of him hated the fact that he was having to get them involved in this now but he knew that he didn’t have a choice. He couldn’t stay out there until he healed, he could feel that it hadn’t kicked in yet and if anyone found him then they would take him to hospital and the last thing he needed was to have to answer questions about what had happened. Facing his dads was something that he was dreading in this state but he knew that he just had to trust that they would understand. It was Adelina who found him and he could see the concern on his dad’s face as they moved into the living room. He felt a little better once he was lying down on the sofa but he still felt weak and the pain was intense. He had developed a high threshold for pain over the years, he’d had to given some of the foster homes that he’d lived in, but even Elias knew that this was more than a human would be able to endure. The only reason he was alive right now was because he was a phoenix but he wasn’t sure how long even his body would be able to hold out. He’d managed to make it home at least so if something did happen then at least he was somewhere safe surrounded by the people he loved. Toni soon joined them and he looked just as concerned as Ethan did, quickly hugging Adelina who was crying before moving over to the sofa and placing a hand on his husband’s shoulder as his gaze started sweeping over Elias’ wounds, surveying the damage. As his dad asked what had happened, Elias shifted position slightly before wincing at the pain that shot through him. “It was the men who killed my foster parents and torched the apartment,” he said, unable to put into words the fact that they had killed him too. “I ran into them in town and they realised I survived when that should have been impossible. They wanted me to work for them again and when I refused they didn’t like it too much. This is their way of sending a message,” he groaned. “I tried to fight them but there were too many of them,” he added. He had put up as much of a fight as he could but in the end it just wasn’t enough. As his dad asked him not to go anywhere and told him to stay with them, Elias felt a half smile touch his lips. “I’ll try,” he promised even though he knew that it wasn’t entirely his decision. “His wounds are bad, babe. It looks like they must have used iron of some kind,” Toni said gently. That was one of a phoenix’s weaknesses and it looked like the guys had lucked out and found it without even realising. “How are you feeling, son?” Toni asked as he turned his attention back to Elias only to find that Elias’ eyes had drifted closed. “Tired, I feel like I need to sleep,” Elias said, his voice sounding far away even to his own ears. — which brings us back to the hero's shoulders —
Ethan quietly listened to Elias as he explained that it had been the men who killed his foster parents and torched the apartment. To think that anybody would want to hurt Elias like this... It made him angry, but it made him unspeakably sad, too. Had Elias not suffered enough? Why would they make him suffer again? With the kind of life that Elias has lived, he should have been given a break but as he looked at the extent of Elias' injuries, he realized that the break was simply nowhere in sight for the young boy. Instead, life put him in even more pain. It left Ethan with a bitter taste on his tongue, his frown digging deeper into his features as he listened to Elias explain that they had done this to him because he'd refused to work for them again and this was their way of sending a message and the message itself was loud and clear, it was unmistakable that they were dangerous and capable of severely hurting others if they didn't like what they were saying too much.
They had done exactly the same thing to Elias because he'd refused to work for them again. Ethan clenched his jaw and reached down to take his son's hand in his own, his eyes leaving him for a moment as Antonio's words reached him. He nodded his head grimly, knowing that with the extent of Elias' injuries, death was inevitable. He could feel it looming in the air, waiting for Elias to let his guard down. "Where did this take place, kiddo? Do you remember?" Ethan questioned, his son's hand still in his own, trying his best not to move his hand so that Elias wouldn't have to move because he could tell that just one simple move was enough to put him in severe pain.
Ethan knew it was coming and when Elias' eyes began to close as if they had adapted a mind of their own, Ethan felt his heart ache. He'd felt that kind of drowsiness before when the grenade had gone off and it had almost pulled him in when the house crumbled under him in the fire but he'd managed to fight it off. Fighting it was possible, but it didn't always work. With Elias' injuries, he knew that it was a losing battle. Time was cruel when it wanted to be. "Kiddo?" Ethan called out, his eyes scanning Elias' face, his insides twisting. "No, no, hey, don't fall asleep, okay? I know it's tempting, but you gotta stay awake. Elias, please."

Elias knew that the last thing he wanted was to drag his family into the mess that his foster parents had created. They had already done so much for him by taking him in and giving him a safe place to live before they had gone on to adopt him and he knew that he wanted to do everything that he could in order to keep them safe. He knew that they were all supernatural like he was but the truth was that he knew that he wouldn’t forgive himself if something happened to any of them because of him. In the beginning he had often found himself worrying that they would all think that he wasn’t worth taking a chance on and that they would turn their backs on him like everyone else had done but they hadn’t, they had made him a part of their family even before they found out that Ethan was his biological father and that meant the world to Elias. Unfortunately his past had ended up catching up with him, though, but he knew them well enough to know that they weren’t going to turn their backs on him like everyone else had. They were good people and he knew that they loved him just like he loved them but he also knew that he didn’t want to put them in danger so he had to figure out a way to stop them from getting hurt. Right now his whole body hurt and Elias knew that that wasn’t a good thing but the feeling of his dad holding his hand was enough to bring him some comfort at least. He wasn’t sure how he had managed to make it home in the first place but Eli found him and helped him onto the sofa and he was grateful to her for that. Elias hadn’t known that he was a phoenix before he had died the first time and back then it had been over in an instant. Now he was doing his best to hold on but he was starting to feel even more tired with every passing minute and he had learned enough during his time at the Salvatore School to know what that meant – death was coming for him, it was just a matter of time. As his dad asked if he remembered where this took place, Elias shook his head. “I ran into them near the Grill but I promise I’ll handle it, I don’t want any of you getting dragged into this and getting hurt,” he said, lifting his gaze to meet that of both of his dads. “We’re your parents Elias, it’s our job to protect you not the other way around. We promised we’d look after you when we took you in and we’re going to do just that, you don’t have to deal with this on your own,” Toni assured him, his expression softening as he looked over at his son and even though Elias was still worried about them getting hurt, relief flooded through him nonetheless as he realised that he really wasn’t going to have to face it on his own this time. He had grown so used to not having anyone in his corner like this and even though it had been quite a while since they took him in it was still too easy to fall back into old habits of thinking that he had to look out for himself all the time. “Thanks dad,” he said, offering him a half smile as he looked up at him. As his eyes drifted shut it would have been easy to give into the darkness and there was a part of him that wanted to so the pain would stop but then he heard his dad’s voice pulling him out of the darkness and his eyes opened once more. “I’m trying dad but I’m not sure how much longer I can fight it for,” he said, his eyes sad as they met his dad’s. He didn’t want to give in because he knew what that would mean but at the same time he felt like he was fighting a losing battle. “I’m not as strong as you.” His dad had managed to fight it off after the house he was in collapsed and there was a part of Elias that had always admired him for that but he wasn’t sure that he had the strength left to do that, not this time. “I’m sorry dad,” he breathed, a couple of tears rolling down his cheeks as his eyes drifted shut once more. With how upset Ethan was, he was grateful that Antonio had taken it upon himself to reassure Elias that they were going to protect him because at the moment, Ethan couldn't find the words to reassure him on the same level. He was stricken with an overwhelming amount of sadness that left a bitter taste on his tongue and mixed in with that sadness was anger, but it wasn't directed toward anyone at the house but at the people responsible for leaving Elias in this condition. Ethan's eyes remained on the younger, forcing his own lips into a small reassuring smile before he nodded his head to showcase that he agreed with what Antonio had just said. He let his thumb trace over his son's knuckles, a subconscious gesture done to reassure himself and the younger but there was nothing reassuring about the way that Elias looked right now.
Ethan felt his heart clench at Elias' words before he nodded his head slowly in an understanding manner. With the severity of his wounds, he didn't blame the younger. It looked painful so he can't imagine the amount of pain that the younger was going through. Truth was, Ethan wasn't strong, most of the days he felt pretty weak, especially that day at the fire. He'd almost given up that night but it was the thought of his family that made him keep fighting but even back then, his wounds hadn't been too severe unlike Elias'. "It's okay, you're already strong for staying with us this long." Ethan spoke up once more, his lips stretching into a small smile. He felt tears fill his eyes at the sight of Elias' eyes falling shut. "You'll feel better when you wake up." Ethan promised him in a quiet voice, his hand still in Elias'.
Ethan released a shaky breath before moving his hand up to his eyes to wipe his tears away before he looked over his shoulder at Antonio before shaking his head at him as if to silently tell him that Elias wasn't going to make it.

Elias had honestly thought that he had left this chapter of his life behind him when he’d died the first time. His dads had taken him in and given him a safe place to live but more than anything else they had given him a family. Living with them had almost made his old life seem like a distant memory but his past had caught up with him in the end and now he was dragging his family into it. He knew that he would always feel bad about that but he could tell that his dad was sincere when he said that it was their job to protect him rather than the other way around. Elias had spent such a long time without having anyone in his life that he could really count on, he’d had Kelly before she’d died but he had been on his own ever since then. Befriending Ela and Eli despite the fact that they had been going to a different school at the time had given him a sense of belonging that he hadn’t had for a long time and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to hold onto that. He could see that Ethan was upset and Toni was as well. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that they loved him and he wanted to stay strong and beat this but the truth was that with each passing moment his strength was diminishing and he wasn’t sure just how much longer he could hold on for. The sight of Ethan’s smile and the feeling of his thumb tracing over his knuckles was enough to reassure Elias a little but he still worried about them getting hurt and he knew that he would do whatever he could in order to stop that from happening. That didn’t mean that he was going to lie or keep the truth from them though, he had promised himself when they took him in that he was going to be honest with them and that was a promise he intended on sticking to. As his dad said he was strong for staying with them that long, Elias felt a smile touch his lips. “I learnt from the best,” he said, knowing that he had learned to be strong from the two of them. Right now even just breathing hurt and there was a part of Elias that just wanted the pain to stop but he knew what it would mean if that happened. He was doing his best to hold on but it wasn’t easy and he knew that he was fighting a losing battle. Just the sight of him in so much pain was enough to break Toni’s heart and he wanted nothing more than to spare Elias anymore pain but he knew that wasn’t possible. They hadn’t been able to stop this from happening this time but they could at least make sure that it didn’t happen to him ever again and that was something that Toni knew that he and Ethan were going to have to do. “I’m glad I made it back to you, I love you guys,” Elias said and those words alone were enough to make Toni’s heart ache that much more. “We love you too, son.” Eli had been stood there watching the whole exchange quietly but looking over at her Toni could see the tears in her eyes and he reached for his daughter, pulling her into a tight hug as tears began rolling down his own cheeks. By the time Toni looked at Elias again, his eyes had already drifted shut and it was clear that Ethan was crying too. Meeting his husband’s gaze, Toni nodded when Ethan shook his head to indicate that Elias wasn’t going to make it. He had suspected as much and now Ethan had confirmed it and as Eli moved away he knelt beside his husband and pulled him into a tight hug before placing his hand over Elias’ hand as well. “You don’t have to keep fighting anymore Elias, you can let go now,” he said, his voice breaking as he spoke while he hastily wiped away his tears with his free hand. “You’re going to be okay, we’ll see you soon.” In that moment Toni was so glad that Elias was a phoenix because it meant that he would come back to them but that didn’t make it any easier to accept the fact that he was dying. Dying wasn’t something that Elias wanted to do but in a way it was almost a relief to stop the pain even if it meant leaving his family behind for a while. Elias really had been doing his best to hold on but as Toni told him that he could let go now, Elias took his last breath before giving into the darkness. Toni’s heart ached as Elias took his last breath and he stayed where he was holding Ethan for a while before speaking again. “I know he’ll be back before we know it but that doesn’t make it any easier,” he admitted, his gaze fixed on his husband as he spoke. “Are you okay?”ETHAN ALVAREZ

— which brings us back to the hero's shoulders —
Ethan found it incredibly difficult to smile given the current situation but he didn't want Elias to see him upset because it will only make the situation worse for him, he wanted to ease some of his pain so his lips eventually stretched into a smile, Elias' hand still grasped in his own as his thumb traced over his knuckles, a subconscious gesture meant to comfort Elias, to let him know that he was right there, he was here for him now, but what about earlier, though? Why couldn't he have protected him better? He understood that these things were impossible to predict — you just never know but god, it hurt. It hurt to the point where it felt like his heart had been pierced repeatedly with countless daggers. Were it not for Elias' status as a phoenix, he'd be dead for good and just the thought of losing him left him feeling terrified to the point where it left a bitter taste on his tongue. They need to do something before they actually lose the younger for good. They'd gotten so close tonight. He can't let it happen again. "Kiddo, I just, uh— I need to know one more thing. Do you remember what they looked like? The guys who did this to you?"
I love you guys,
God, it felt like a goodbye, it sure as hell hurt like one. Ethan's lips parted and closed, feeling the words hanging on the tip of his tongue but what nearly escaped him was a sob but he managed to hold it back in time as he dipped his head down to hide his face from his son's line of view. Ethan released a trembling breath as he scrambled for any resemblance of control over his own emotions and quickly wiped the tears away from his eyes and cleared his throat. "We, uh—" There was a brief pause as Ethan noticed the emotions dripping from his voice. He cleared his throat again and finally looked at the younger. "We love you too." Ethan replied with a quick nod of his head, his eyes stinging again with unshed tears but he held back. He couldn't break down, not now, not in front of the younger. Though there was a moment where that dam holding his tears back almost broke and it was when Antonio brought him in for a hug. From there, it took an immense amount of strength for him to be able to hold back his tears but a few did manage to escape and then some more at Antonio's words, his heart clenching so tightly in his chest that he almost felt like he couldn't breathe. Ethan struggled to say something, unable to hold back his emotions from seeping into the sound of his voice. He didn't want Elias to hear the way he sounded pained and saddened by their goodbye, no matter how brief.
Ethan instead gave him a gentle squeeze of his hand, hoping that the younger could feel him, still there beside him as he took his last breath. When it became clear to him that Elias was gone, Ethan dipped his head down again, feeling like his own heart was in his throat, he had to push back countless sobs from escaping his lips, burrowing his emotions deep down because he knew that if he let those feelings out, he might never stop despite knowing that Elias wasn't gone forever, it still didn't make any of this right. Ethan released a shaky breath at Antonio's next words, his eyes lifting to relax on his son, taking in the sight of his wounds which only broke his heart more.
It was so goddamn messed up.
IN a stranger's eyes, they might think that he was sleeping with how peaceful he looked despite the severity of his wounds, but Ethan knew better and it was that truth that brewed something ugly beneath his skin. Something that roared to life whenever he thought about the guys who did this to his kid. They were out there, walking freely, ready to strike again and who knows if Elias will survive their next strike. Ethan's jaw flexed, Antonio's question pulling him from his thoughts, his eyes showing how pained he was as he looked at his son before he finally pulled his gaze away to look down instead. He shook his head in lieu of a verbal answer to Antonio's question. He wasn't okay, he won't be okay until the people who are responsible for this are dealt with. Ethan felt a whole mixture of emotions, he felt sad, angry, and hurt. Each feeling was so overwhelming that he felt like he was seconds away from being swallowed whole. "This needs to end, Toni. They could've killed him, for good. They almost did, what if they—" Ethan stopped when his voice broke near the end. "What if they actually do it next time? I can't let there be a next time. I won't. I need to know, are you with me on this?"

Seeing Elias like this was enough to break Toni’s heart. He had spent so much time trying to protect the girls and by the time Elias moved in with them he had honestly hoped that the threats to him had passed. Elias had been killed the day of the fire, there had never been any doubt that the people responsible for his death would have believed that, but the police had followed every lead they could and hadn’t been able to find any of them. It had seemed like they had left town after killing Elias and his foster parents and setting the whole building on fire and they had all been able to move on safe in that knowledge. Now it seemed that they were back and Toni knew that he and Ethan needed to do something in order to protect their son. Elias had been through so much already and he had died once at the hands of those people. They had both hoped that he would be spared from that fate again and it had seemed safe for him to stay in Mystic Falls but the past had caught up with Elias and Toni hated that fact. He and Ethan had made a promise that they were going to keep Elias safe and he felt like they had failed him in that. There was no way they could have known that those responsible were going to return but seeing him like this Toni was just glad that Elias would come back to them. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that Elias’ injuries were fatal and all they could do was make him as comfortable as possible right now. It was comforting to Elias to know that his dads were there and he gave Ethan’s hand a gentle squeeze as his thumb traced over his knuckles. Elias had hoped to spare them from having to see him like this but the truth was that the moment he had been dumped at the side of the road all he had wanted to do was to get home and be with his family. Now that’s right where he was and even though he knew that he was going to die, he was comforted by the fact that he wasn’t alone. As his dad asked if he remembered what the people who did this looked like, Elias’ expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I remember one of them from the photos the police showed us after the fire. He had a tattoo on his neck. A couple of the guys I used to have to work for were there too,” he explained, pretty sure that they would remember since he had pointed them out to his dads when the police had showed him the photos. As Elias said that he loved them, Toni felt his heart ache. He was trying so hard to hold on but it was clear that he was struggling and Toni wanted nothing more than to take their son’s pain away. He wanted to protect Elias and make sure that no one ever did anything like this to him again and he didn’t doubt that Ethan would be feeling the same way. Toni had never known what it would feel like to experience the unconditional love towards a child that parents were supposed to feel until the girls came into his life and he felt that same way towards Elias. They might not be related to each other by blood but Elias was still his son and Toni knew that he wanted to keep him safe. “We love you too, son,” Toni said gently, moving his free hand from Elias’ to brush Elias’ hair back gently. Toni was doing his best to stay strong for them but the truth was that it wasn’t easy at all. Seeing Elias in so much pain and seeing Ethan’s heartbroken the way it was made Toni want to do anything he could in order to make it better but he knew that right now he couldn’t. Eli had moved so she was sitting on the floor next to the sofa and her hand was on her brother’s shoulder. She was still crying and Toni knew that he should comfort her but she had moved away from him so that he could be there for Ethan and Toni knew that he needed to do just that. Right now they could have almost been back on the battlefield again, it wasn’t exactly like losing Ethan had been but the pain wasn’t any easier to deal with and Toni’s swallowed past the lump in his throat as he saw the tears spill over his husband’s lashes and he held Ethan to him that much tighter. Toni had told Elias that it was okay to let go but too soon it was over and Elias was gone and that realisation was enough to have the tears that Toni had been doing his best to hold back start rolling down his face. “It’s okay, you don’t have to hold back,” Toni assured Ethan gently, not wanting him to feel like he had to keep it all bottled up. This was the second time they had seen Elias die, the first since they had taken him in and adopted him, and even though he was going to come back that didn’t make it any easier to process. Toni had asked Ethan if he was okay because he had felt like one of them had needed to say something but the pain on his husband’s face spoke volumes and he let his hand rest against the back of Ethan’s neck as he shook his head. “I know. I’m not sure they knew his weaknesses but they got lucky and we can’t risk that happening again,” Toni nodded, his heart aching even more at the way that Ethan’s voice broke. “We won’t let that happen,” he said fiercely as Ethan asked what if they actually did it next time. As Ethan asked if he was with him on this, Toni didn’t hesitate before nodding. “I’m always with you, you know that,” he assured his husband. “We need to find the people responsible and stop them before they do something much worse,” he said, his eyes fixed on Ethan’s as he spoke. “Shall we wait for Elias to resurrect and then go or shall we go now?” he asked, not sure which would be better. If they waited until Elias resurrected then they could at least make sure that he was alright but if they waited then it might make it that much more difficult to find those responsible. Either way, he knew that he would follow Ethan’s lead. ETHAN ALVAREZ

— which brings us back to the hero's shoulders —
Ethan was quiet as he listened to Elias, his brows tugged into a frown as he recalled the faces on the picture that the police had shown them. He nodded his head to let Elias that he was listening to what he was saying, lips stretching into a faint smile. "Okay, buddy. Thank you for telling me," Ethan rubbed the back of his hand gently before releasing his hand but he let his hand rest on his arm instead. With Elias' description and the picture in mind, Ethan knew what they should keep an eye out for, which helped for sure. He can't let this happen again, they got lucky this time around but what if they strike next time with determination to kill him? What if they succeed in killing him entirely next time? Ethan can't let there be a next time or else he'd wind up losing his goddamn mind.
Seeing Ethan die wasn't easy. They had seen the younger die twice now and it hurt like hell each time. He had to hold back his tears because he didn't want Elias to see him cry, he didn't want that to be his last memory of them, so for his sake, he held himself back and even after he was gone, Ethan couldn't cry the way he ached to because he was worried that if he were to start, it'd be impossible to get him to stop, so he held back so he could be strong for everyone. He shook his head at Antonio's reassurance, one hand moving to wipe the tear stains away. "Now isn't—" Ethan paused when his voice broke near the end as his eyes relaxed on his son once more. "The time for that." Ethan finally concluded, struggling to hold back his tears as he spoke. He pressed his heel against each eye to wipe the tears away as he released a shaky breath.
Ethan was glad to hear that Antonio was with him. He nodded his head in agreement when he said that they should find the ones responsible for doing this to Elias. "If we wait, there's a good chance they won't be there anymore by the time that Elias comes back. We can't lose them again." Ethan pushed himself up from his position where he was squatting down in front of Elias. He reached out to give Eli's arm a gentle rub in a comforting manner before leaning down to press a gentle kiss on her head. "We'll be back soon. Call us if anything happens, okay?" He pulled away shortly after and began making his way to the door, each step more determined than the one before. He left the door open for Antonio to get out after him before he approached his jeep to get in. He switched on the ignition while waiting for Antonio to join him. Once Antonio was with him, he pulled out of his parking spot and began driving in the general direction of the Grill.
Ethan decided to park a block away from the Grill to not risk spooking the guys and having them run off. They will have to walk there to be able to spot them better and approach them without having them running away. "Let's find those assholes," Ethan switched off the ignition and got out of the jeep, stuffing his keys inside the pocket of his jacket, the way he walked and carried himself screamed that he was angry, so did his expression. He was fucking furious and he knew that finding the guys who did this to Elias would be the first step in setting everything right.

Ever since the girls were born Toni had wanted nothing more than to protect them and after realising that Elias had died the day of the fire had made him determined to protect the boy as well. It never felt like the girls were his and Elias was Ethan’s, they were all one family unit as far as he was concerned and he was just as protective of Elias as he was the girls. Seeing him like this was tough, Toni could see that Elias was doing his best to stay strong and hold on for them and he was glad that the boy had been able to answer Ethan’s questions but the truth was that Toni didn’t want to see Elias hurting any longer. He knew that the boy had to be in agony, his wounds were so severe that there was no question as to whether they would claim Elias’ life, but he had managed to make it back to them and for that at least Toni was grateful. They were all supernatural but if anyone learned that any of them had died then they would have to move on and that was something that Toni didn’t want them to have to do just yet. They were all happy and settled in Mystic Falls and if Elias was going to die then Toni was glad that it would happen in a place where he was safe, comfortable and surrounded by the people who loved him rather than alone and scared or surrounded by strangers. This shouldn’t be happening at all, Elias should have the chance to live his life in peace, but right now he couldn’t do that and Toni knew that he and Ethan were going to have to find a way to put that right. It was clear just how much seeing Elias like this was affecting Ethan and it wasn’t any easier for Toni but he knew that he needed to stay strong for his husband. It would be so easy to break down now that Elias was gone but soon enough Ethan was shaking his head and Toni couldn’t deny that he understood. Elias needed them to be strong for him, he needed them to protect him and they couldn’t do that right now if they gave in to the crushing sadness. “You’re right, Elias needs us,” Toni nodded, rubbing his hand gently over Ethan’s back as he did his best to hold back his tears and wiped his eyes. There wasn’t a doubt in Toni’s mind that he and Ethan were in this together and he hoped that Ethan hadn’t doubted it either. During the war the two of them and Ben had looked out for each other and now he and Ethan were still doing that. They always had each other’s back and always would so Toni knew that he wasn’t going to let anything stop him from supporting his husband now and being right there with him. “You’re right, we need to end this once and for all,” Toni agreed. They had thought that the guys had left Mystic Falls after the fire and it seemed like they had for a while but they had returned and he knew that they couldn’t risk letting that happen again. “Of course dad. Don’t worry about Elias, I’ll look after him,” Eli assured Ethan as he told her to call them if anything happened. “Please be careful,” she added, her gaze drifting between her dads as she spoke. “We will sweetheart, don’t worry,” Toni assured her, getting to his feet and pulling her into a hug before kissing the top of her head gently. By that time Ethan was already outside and Toni knew that his husband was eager to get going but he quickly put a call in to Diego and asked if he could come over to be there for the kids and it was only after Diego had confirmed that he would be that Toni headed outside and climbed into the jeep. “Diego is coming over to be with the kids, I didn’t want to leave them on their own,” he said as he fastened his seatbelt and they set off. It didn’t take long for them to reach an area near the Grill and Toni knew that Ethan had stopped there so they wouldn’t end up spooking the guys. Toni wasn’t sure how they were going to get through to the guys but he knew that they had to do something and he nodded as Ethan spoke. “Let’s do this,” he nodded, climbing out of the vehicle before falling into step alongside Ethan. Toni had known pain and loss before, when Ethan died he had felt so angry and upset that he had lashed out and he felt the same way now even though they knew that this time Elias would be coming back to them. Next time he might not, though, and Elias deserved to be able to live his life without worrying that he was going to die all the time so they couldn’t afford to let there be a next time. Finding the guys wasn’t easy and it took longer than Toni had thought it would but finally they found someone who was able to tell them where the guys could be found, albeit with a little persuasion. Eventually they found them and Toni felt his blood boil as he found himself face to face with the men who had killed their son but outwardly at least he was completely calm, something that he had grown used to over the years. “You’re the guys who had the run in with Elias earlier, is that right?” Toni asked, his gaze fixed levelly on the guy who was clearly their leader. “What’s it to you?” the guy asked evasively. “He’s our son and we’re here to make sure that you don’t ever go anywhere near him again.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

— which brings us back to the hero's shoulders —
Despite getting out of the house, Ethan didn't feel any better. He knew that he won't be feeling better any time soon until they do something to put an end to all of Elias' unnecessary suffering. He won't fail again as his father, he'd done that enough times already, he should do better. No, he will do better. Ethan snapped out of his thoughts at the sound of Antonio's voice letting him know that he had called Diego over to watch over the girls. He nodded his head a few times to let his husband know that he'd heard him. Ethan put the car in reverse to get out of his parking spot and drove in the general direction of the Grill. He parked the jeep a block away from the Grill to not ring the guys' alarm bells. He couldn't risk them running off too soon.
The whole searching process for the guys took longer than necessary but Ethan just guessed that they were good at staying hidden, it was how they escaped the law for this long, no? It had to be. People like them deserved to be behind bars for good for ever hurting Elias. God knows who else they had hurt to get exactly what they need. They didn't seem like good people and when they did manage to find them, Ethan's frown was prominent and so was the tension in his shoulders, his fists clenched by his side, aching to take his anger out on them, it was what they deserved. They hurt Elias first, so who says that he can't hurt them too? Ethan clenched his jaw at the way they responded back to Antonio's question. He recognized them from the picture so he knew they had the right crew, so he should have stepped forward and fought them, but as his anger cleared, he realized that violence only breeds violence and he can't fix something by ruining it further with his anger. For Elias' sake, he'd have to be better than those assholes.
"How much?" Ethan asked, his eyes scanning each individual. "How much do you need to get the hell out of town and never come looking for Elias again?" Ethan elaborated further as he crossed his arms in front of his chest, still looking between them. "This is about his debt, right? We'll pay it off, so just name your damn price and leave the kid alone." Despite his best efforts at holding back his anger, it still managed to seep into the sound of his voice. He could see them looking at each other before they all erupted into mocking laughter. "We don't need your money. In fact, we can make way more than you could ever offer us with the kid." One of them answered, his shoulders lifting and dropping in a careless shrug. "We're never gonna leave him alone." Another one butted in shortly after, his lips splitting into a grin.
"Now, we can't let you leave without a taste of what our dearest Elias went through, can we? Boys, it's time to play." Their supposed leader made a gesture for his men to attack and so they began approaching the two of them which was exactly what Ethan was looking forward to deep down. He clenched his fist tightly and began fighting them as they approached.

Toni felt a bit bad about the idea of leaving the girls and Elias at the house but he knew that he just had to believe that they would be fine. He had called Diego and asked him to come over so he could look after them and thankfully his brother had agreed. It would be a while before Elias resurrected and Toni hoped that they would be back in time so they could be there when he woke up but knowing that the kids wouldn’t be on their own was a huge relief to say the least. He knew that he and Ethan had to do this, Elias was their son and they hadn’t realised the danger that he was in so they needed to do better. Elias had said something about a debt that needed to be settled so Toni knew that they would be able to do that and with any luck that would be the end of it. Something told him that it wasn’t going to be quite that easy but he knew that he didn’t want to think like that right now. He needed to stay positive and he needed to stay strong for Ethan so that was exactly what he was going to do. Normally Toni would reach for Ethan’s hand while they walked or Ethan would reach for his but right now he knew that both of them were far too worked up for that. As it was, every so often Toni’s hands kept clenching into fists at his sides and he could see that it was the same for Ethan. Deep down Toni knew that this was going to turn into a fight and he was ready for that but there was always going to be a part of him that would hope that they could resolve this another way. When he and Ethan met fighting had been a necessity, they had been fighting in the war to protect the whole world but this time was different, this time they were fighting to save their son and as far as Toni was concerned that was much more important. He had never realised how much he had wanted a family before and now the one he had might seem a little unusual to some but it was perfect to him and he knew that he wanted to protect it at all costs. Toni’s eyes were fixed on the guys before them when Ethan asked how much it would cost to pay off the debt, trying to gauge their reactions. Soon enough they were laughing, though, and it was enough to make Toni’s blood boil. “I’m sure that’s not true. Name your price,” Toni challenged, knowing that there had to be an amount they would accept to wipe the debt and leave Elias alone for good. “Fifty thousand? A hundred?” It didn’t matter to Toni how much they had to pay, it would be worth it to make sure that Elias was safe and didn’t have to keep looking over his shoulder again. “If you’re willing to pay that much then he’s worth that much more to us. Perhaps we should get out of town and take him with us. There are places where we can make much more money than we can here,” one of the guys countered and Toni’s hands clenched into fists once more. As they started moving towards them, Toni glanced at his husband before turning back to look at the men. “Three of you against two of us. That hardly seems like a fair fight for you,” he said and that had the leader sneering. “You really think there’s only three of us?” he asked, a smirk on his face as more men emerged from the shadows and began advancing on them. Toni didn’t hesitate in throwing himself into the fight as it began but he made sure to keep track of where Ethan was the whole time the same way he had done during the war. They had always made a great team and even outnumbered he didn’t doubt that working together they would have been able to take down this group even without their supernatural abilities. He might have hoped that they would be able to resolve this without having to resort to violence but that wasn’t an option so Toni gave it his all. ETHAN ALVAREZ

One might think that the thought of getting involved in violent acts would make Ethan's skin crawl and it normally would have, but for these guys? The urge to hurt them was burning so hot under his skin that it almost terrified him. He wanted to hurt them in ways that would have them begging for forgiveness and even then, he wouldn't forgive them, not until they begged Elias for it. Ethan watched the other guys join in before he scoffed, remaining where he was next to Antonio, his head tilted slightly to the side. "Still nowhere near enough," Ethan uncrossed his arms from in front of his chest and waited as one of the guys began approaching him with a single mindset; hurting him. Ethan avoided the punch thrown his way and grabbed the guy's arm, twisting it at a painful angle behind his back before he turned the guy around and kicked him in the back, sending him stumbling forward until he lost his balance and fell to the ground. His friend soon took his place as he took out his knife and began attacking Ethan with the same mindset, one that Ethan could predict and see from a mile away. A mindset that he, too, shared with them in that exact moment. All that anger from seeing his kid hurt, it was all concentrated in his closed fists and his clenched teeth.
Ethan knocked the knife out of the guy's hand before he aimed a punch at the guy's jaw which sent him staggering to the left. Another guy soon took his place and this time, he did manage to punch Ethan in the stomach but he never got the chance to attack him again as Ethan managed to catch him off guard, too. The fight lasted for longer than expected but the other side was losing despite the fact that they were up against two guys. Ethan looked over at Antonio to make sure that he was doing okay and it was in that moment that the red and blue lights filled the alleyway as the police siren began going off. "Mystic Falls Police, don't move!" A voice soon filled the alleyway as a cop soon began approaching them. The fight slowed to a screeching halt. Ethan released the guy's shirt from his hand, lowering his fist as well. "10-40, I have an altercation, near the Mystic Grill. In need of back up. Suspects appear to be armed and dangerous." The cop soon spoke into the radio attached to his uniform and moved his hand back to support the gun currently aimed at the guys. The cop's partner soon moved closer too, keeping everyone still. "Keep your hands above your head!" The officer warned one of the guy's who looked like he was going to reach for his own gun. As the officer moved closer, Ethan realized who it was.
When their eyes met, Tomas hesitated for a moment as he looked between Ethan and Antonio, no doubt shocked to see the two of them right now. He looked conflicted because he didn't want to arrest Diego's family, but then again, he had to do his job. "I'm—" The apology was there, one that Ethan cut off with a shake of his head. "It's your job, Tommy. No hard feelings." Ethan told him with a small smile on his lips. He looked over at Antonio for a moment before his eyes shifted to the guys who were currently facing the wall with their hands behind their back. Ethan copied them and with a heavy heart, Tomas put on the handcuffs on Ethan's wrists before he moved to do the same thing to Antonio. "I know you guys wouldn't do this without a reason. We'll talk in the car. Come on," Backup soon arrived to deal with the other guys and get them in the police cruiser. As for Tomas, he guided Ethan and Antonio to the police cruiser that he shared with his partner, Nate.

Toni didn’t normally take pleasure from fighting, during the two wars he’d fought in he had been fighting not just for his own life but for the lives of those around him as well but this time was different. This time he and Ethan were fighting for their son’s life and Toni knew that he was never going to regret that. They had made a promise when they took Elias in that they would keep him safe and they had failed in that promise today. Deep down Toni knew that they had been lured into a false sense of security, they hadn’t known who was responsible for killing Elias and his foster parents and for starting the fire so they hadn’t had any idea that the guys were back in Mystic Falls but now they did and it was time for this to end. They had ended up getting away with murder last time and the injuries they had inflicted on Elias had taken his life a second time as well so he knew that they couldn’t let anything like that happen again. To start with it looked like they were only going to be facing off against three guys but then more emerged and Toni glanced over at his husband as he said that there still were nowhere near enough guys. “You’re right about that, let’s do this,” Toni nodded before throwing himself into the thick of the fight as the guys started advancing. Some of the guys were only fighting hand to hand and those guys were easily taken out but others were armed and they posed more of a challenge. That was how they had ended up getting lucky with Elias, they had hit him with iron and it had done more damage than any of them ever could have known. This time was different though, Elisa didn’t know how to fight the way he and Ethan did and neither did the guys they were fighting it seemed either. Knocking the third guy to the ground, the fourth came at him with an iron bar and Toni dodged the first blow before aiming a punch to the guy’s stomach before aiming a second to his face. He almost fell backwards and Toni took the opportunity to knock the bar from his hand before rounding on the next guy. Some of them were already on the ground but others were starting to get to their feet and Toni knew that the fight was far from other. Glancing over in his husband’s direction, Toni was relieved that Ethan was still holding his own against the guys but then again he really wasn’t surprised. Ethan had always been a good fighter even during the war and that hadn’t changed even all these years later. The fight was still in full swing when the sound of sirens approached and Toni could see that the guys they were fighting were getting even angrier that they were getting beat by two guys they had thought would be easily beat but the fighting stopped then the police showed up. The police officer approached with his gun aimed at them and a second caught up with him quiet quickly. “You there, hands above your head against the wall. Is there anything in your pockets that can harm me?” the second guy questioned as he moved over to the first of the gang they were fighting and started patting him down. Toni recognised the guy immediately, it was Tommy’s partner Nate and that could only mean one thing. Looking back to the first police officer that had spoken, Toni’s gaze came to rest on the guy’s face for the first time and his heart sank as he realised who it was. It was clear that he was conflicted and Toni shook his head. “Ethan’s right, you have to do this Tommy,” Toni assured him, knowing that he didn’t have a choice. Moving next to Ethan, Toni didn’t offer any resistance as Tommy slipped the handcuffs around his wrists. “You’re right, we wouldn’t,” Toni agreed as Tommy said that he knew they wouldn’t do this without a reason. He could see the shocked look on Nate’s face as he realised who it was that Tommy was leading over to the car and he shot a look in Tommy’s direction before turning his attention back to what he was doing, leaving the three of them alone to talk. “Listen, Tommy, I swear we’ll tell you everything but first is there any chance I could borrow your phone? I really need to make a call,” he said, knowing that the only way they were going to end this was by asking for help rather than trying to do it all on their own this time. ETHAN ALVAREZ
