The girl might’ve been a born witch, but she was also a born business woman. Nicky set the box of receipts down on the counter and pulled up the stool on the other side. Booted feet hooked through the rungs, the same way he’d done thousands of times as a kid in the shop. Always happy to sit up front, perched behind a counter he’d barely been able to see over, even with the help of the stool at the start. He’d watched as his dad had balanced the books, lessons dripping from his lips – those accountants are no good, they just scalp another layer off of yer. You’ve a good brain in your head, son, use it for this – tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth as he’d tried those first few sums. The only man hadn’t been wrong, and maybe one day – if Mandy didn’t want this and Darce, well, if neither one of them ended up with a kid of their own to pass it onto to – it’d be Cassie here, working through those same sums. Another lesson on the list to run through her.
Nicky glanced up at the door. She’d gone for lunch for the pair of them, a couple of bills tucked in her hand, a warning to treat herself layered on top of the request for a sandwich from somewhere (it wasn’t gonna be a patch on what he would’ve got from the café round the corner at home, but just the scent of burgers turned his stomach these day). Maybe when she came back he’d sit with her, go through the books with her – even if it’d have her eyes crossing by the end of it. Huffing out a trace of amusement he wouldn’t have found in any of it a month ago, Nicky began to sort the receipts. His handwriting was probably half indecipherable, but he hauled up the heavy leather bound book he tracked the sales in. Columns tallied in that spidery black scrawl. A ten dollar profit on an old bit of Staffordshire ware here, a hundred on a ring – Nicky frowned faintly as he bent forward to study the trays of rings displayed in the counter below him. No mention of the stone if there was one, surely Cassie would’ve told him if anybody else had come in to bend her arm into making them a daylight ring. Everything else had spilled out of her a couple of mornings back – his return turning into a catch that’d lasted until what had seemed like the early afternoon. So much had happened outside of that grim terrarium of his life.
Maybe she wouldn’t remember, but he’d ask her when she got back. A little business talk over that sandwich and another pot of tea. A dozen entries made, items checked off of his mental inventory, including a talisman that had been kept in the safe out back – one of the objects he’d bought from Andy, back when she’d bolted. He’d overpaid her then, but it’d still made him a tidy hundred dollar profit. Perhaps enough time had passed that its original owner, the man who’d put a black mark against her name in the community, would’ve lost interest in it all. Nicky flipped the next receipt over, started back through the ledger to find the listing for the carved snuff box. His pen stilled on the page as the door opened, the bell above it ringing out. Not Cassie. Not the hybrid either – there’d been hide nor hair of him since they’d broken Mandy and Maeve out. Young, unfamiliar. Nicky lifted the pen, capping it before setting it down on the counter and offering up that bland, welcoming smile. ”Afternoon. Anythin’ in particular I can help you with?” Usually he’d have left them drift, browsing their way through the place, but most of his customers were older, at least in appearance. You never could tell these days, or in this town.

Ben had been alive for a long time, thousands of years in fact, but the truth was that the last year had been unlike any he’d ever known. Arriving in Mystic Falls had changed everything, it had brought him to Jed and through him Ben had finally found people that he could truly be himself around without having to hide who he was. He had found acceptance and love, new friends and old. He had found a family and Ben knew that he never wanted to go back to the solitary life that he had led for so long. His father had almost ruined everything when he had declared war on all supernaturals and he had killed Josie and Hope but they had banded together to stop him and Ben knew that they would do so again when he reappeared. Now Josie was a heretic, Hope was a fully activated tribrid and Jed had become a hybrid so that he could fight harder for the people he loved and so that they could have a real future together. Ben had asked Jed to marry him and Jed had accepted but Ben knew that before they started thinking about the wedding they needed to deal with his father and that was going to be a lot easier said than done. Castiel didn’t want to help them kill Raziel, too worried about what the death of another angel when their numbers were already dwindling would do, and the truth was that Ben wasn’t so sure that killing him was the best idea. He wanted his father stopped but he didn’t want the people he loved losing a part of themselves in the process so he knew that he had to try and find another way. That was why he had ended up heading to the pawn shop that day, he had heard that the owner didn’t just stock ordinary items, he was also a dealer in supernatural artefacts and that was exactly what Ben needed right now. He had been doing some research and he had come across an item that might be of use against his father, an item that was home to a Chambre de Chasse. Ben wasn’t even sure if it would be powerful enough to hold an angel but he knew that he had to try. He hadn’t been to the shop before but then again he hadn’t had any need to. Money wasn’t an issue for Ben and he had plenty of supernatural and other items locked away in his vault but this was different. He already felt guilty about the deaths of Josie and Hope and he knew that he would do anything to stop anyone else that he cared about getting hurt. Glancing up at the sign over the shop as he reached it, Ben knew that he had found the right place and he made his way inside, the bell ringing out as he did so. Looking around the shop, Ben turned his attention to the counter when a voice spoke up. “I hope so. I’ve heard you carry more unusual items than those on display here, is that right?” he asked, hoping that the man would understand what he was getting at. Ben knew that there were some people who might just come out and give themselves away as being supernatural but that wasn’t him. He had lived in secret for longer than most had been alive and he knew how to keep it that way. NICHOLAS REID

There’d been a Reid & Sons on Camden Road almost from the minute the first bricks had been laid along it. 200 years of history baked into the walls by the lives that had come and gone within it and the magic that’d filled the space, wielded by at least half a dozen generations. It’d been his four-times great grandmother who’d painted those first gold letters on the front of the place, apparently snatching the paintbrush out of the sign-writer’s hand to do it when she thought he’d been too sloppy. More gold than red had been in her hair when it was done, but even now that proclamation remained – with none of the next generation there to handle the trickle of customers. It twisted at something in him to know that his parents were handling it alone, but what was he supposed to do, Nicky pondered, send Mandy or Darcey to be back there alone?
Echoes of Mandy’s disappearance were still ringing through all of them, like the shell of a church bell quivering after the clapper’s blows had stopped. Maybe they could all stand on their own now and carry on walking through what life was here, just a little unsteady on their feet. They’d get their land legs again, but until then Nicky intended to be there to catch both of them if they stumbled. Just not too close, or the protests would start. Mandy was gonna head back to school, he hoped, without feeling as though the Original hybrid’s mean little eyes were still fixed on her, Darce was … well, that he wasn’t so sure about. His brother had already been picking up the pieces when he’d come here, the shape of how they were going to fit together exactly were all still in his hands. As the accounts had been in his. By the time Cassie got back here he was gonna need something stronger than a cup of tea – which she’d undoubtedly find hilarious.
The impending headache that’d been brewing over what he’d missed in them during his absence froze in tiny pinpricks of light behind his eyes as the door opened and the young man walked in. Not his usual sort of clientele, but in Mystic Falls all those little labels were as muddled as the species that lived here. Nicky propped his hands on the edge of the counter, watching as his greeting had the man turning in his direction. His pale blue eyes narrowed, the study turning towards scrutiny at his question. He kept his expression bland, but that thin thread of amusement pulled at his lips. Word was getting around, which only made judging just who he would do business with all the tougher. ”I guess that all depends on what you mean by unusual and just who you’ve been talkin’ to,” Nicky murmured. ”What is it you’re in the market for today?” His gaze dropped pointedly to the man’s fingers, checking for a ring. There were other ways of wearing the enchanted stone that allowed vampires to walk in daylight, but most went for having it right out there in the open. ”If it was a Mikaelson, then I’d say perhaps you’ve found yourself in the wrong place.” Oh, he could put things out in the open too, and given the attempt Niklaus had made to bend his family to his will, he was done with subtlety.

Ever since his father attacked them and killed Hope and Josie, Ben and his friends had been trying to find a way to stop the angel. He felt awful for bringing this fight to their doorstep but from what the angel had said it would have only been a matter of time before he had caught up with them anyway. He was determined to wipe out all supernaturals from the face of the Earth and he didn’t care that any of them were trying to do something good with their lives, Hope and Josie had been defending the people they cared about and he had killed them in cold blood. Ben had detested the man his whole life, the angel hadn’t been there while he was growing up and the one time he had tried to reach out to his father for help the angel had ignored him. Ben had stolen magic from Heaven and brought it to Earth as a result and he had been cursed to be hunted by monsters for five thousand years. He had died more times than he cared to remember only to be brought back and go through it all again and it was all thanks to the angel who had wanted to see what would happen if he had a child with a human. The angel might share his blood but Ben felt no loyalty towards him, he was loyal to Jed and their friends and he knew that he would do everything in his power to stop his father from hurting anyone else. That was what had brought him to the shop that day, he had heard that they carried some more unusual items and that was what he needed. There were others he could have reached out to, some debts that he could have called in, but it would take far too long and Ben knew that he couldn’t afford to waste any time. There was no telling when his father was going to strike next and they needed to be ready for when he did. He knew that the others were looking into different ways of stopping him and Ben was going to reach out to Hannah and Castiel as well and see whether he could get any more information out of them but for now he knew that he needed to try this first and see if he could put an end to it once and for all. Ben knew that he needed to be careful, he was a student at the Salvatore College so anyone in the know would already be able to put the pieces together that he was supernatural but aside from Jack Winchester, as far as he knew he was the only one of his kind in Mystic Falls and that meant that chances were anyone he met wouldn’t have come across anyone like him before. In all the years he had lived Jack was the only other nephilim that Ben had crossed paths with and sometimes the unknown could be scary to some people but he knew that he needed to find answers and he was determined to do just that. Before Ben could answer the man’s question, he caught the way the guy’s gaze dropped to his hands and Ben felt an amused smile touch his lips. “You won’t find a daylight ring, if that’s what you’re looking for,” he said, a smile playing its way across his face as he looked over at the man. “I’m not a vampire,” he added, knowing that it wouldn’t hurt to let the man know that he knew about the supernatural without giving away what he was himself. Ben had kept what he was a secret for centuries before he had made his way to Mystic Falls and he knew to be careful about who he trusted with that information. “I’m guessing you’ve had dealings with some of the elder Mikaelsons. Mine have been with Hope and Henrik,” Ben shrugged, not sure whether the man knew them or not. “It was actually Ric Saltzman who pointed me in your direction,” he offered, not sure whether that would help or not. “The item I’m after is powerful, strong enough to hold an angel I’m hoping,” he said as he studied the man carefully. “Rumour has it you might be in possession of a chamber de chasse, is that right?”NICHOLAS REID

Maybe grief had added an extra layer padding to dull his awareness, but Nicky knew he’d been lax in watching his back for far too long before Niklaus Mikaelson had snatched his sister practically from this very spot. Back home there’d always been a wariness, a ripple that would run through the area when something started to turn ugly. The family had been entrenched in Camden long enough that they’d have been some of the first on the front line to deal with it, a united front that been left weaker by his absence and had shattered when Lorna had died. In a town where the supernatural was as thick on the streets as fleas on a stray dog’s back he’d gotten complacent and it had almost cost them Mandy. While relief had aired the flat out like a fresh breeze guilt had continued to nibble away at Nicky’s gut. He wouldn’t say the words aloud, not even to Darce, but he was sure the fault had lain with him. This was his shop and he hadn’t been there to stand in the way when the Mikaelsons had come knocking at his door.
On guard now, he’d looked down at the man’s hands, not bothering to hide the suspicion that had to be rolling off of him like cheap aftershave. It was noted, with amusement. He hadn’t been wrong with his assessment of the unusual extending to more than the stock he had in the back room. Nicky’s smile grew sharp as he looked back up to meet his eye. ”Can’t blame a man for tryin’ in this town,” he said cordially enough. ”Although no ring doesn’t guarantee you’re not one. Just means you might have somethin’ a little more subtle than a lapis lazuli knuckle duster in place.” Those without rings at all weren’t strolling in here during the daylight. Thankfully the supernatural world had its limits that even the positively ancient couldn’t escape.
He might not’ve been subtle, but the man in front of him was observant at least. Nicky’s lip curled, his expression flattening around that one point of distaste. Dealings. Not exactly the word he would’ve used for forcing their way into the Mikaelson mansion and pasting Klaus flat while they’d broken Mandy and Maeve out of his little prison in the basement. ”Some,” he said bluntly. ”Can’t say I’ve ‘ad their pleasure. It was the big man ‘imself we went to see. Can’t say I’m lookin’ to repeat the experience.” Klaus and his pack of loyal dogs might not give them much of a choice in that matter though. Nicky’s brows drew together flatly as the familiar name was dropped. A hunter, like so many others in this town – business was business, except in those cases where it involved men and women more like the Mikaelsons than anybody else turning against his own kind.
The low whistle slipped out of Nicky as he straightened up. It was lucky neither Darcey or Mandy had been the ones here to deal with this bloke. Angels and demons being real shouldn’t have been a surprise, but the ease with which the man threw the word around had a tremor working its way through the pit of his stomach. After what had happened to Lorna it had to have been a subject that was already praying on Darce’s mind and the last thing his brother needed was something opening up those cracks again – giving him what might’ve been false hope or adding to his already considerable grief. ”I might have somethin’ like that,” Nicky said tightly. ”You sure you’re capable enough to use somethin’ like that on a thing as powerful as that? It’s not like a cake walk, son.” He bit back a sigh. How many more heavy hitters were in this town, just waiting to drop an anvil on the people blithely strolling about under their noses?

Ben couldn’t really blame the guy for being wary, Mystic Falls was full of people who were supernatural and while some of them were good, not all of them were. He had seen his fair share of bad people over the years and he had seen more monsters than he cared to count but his curse had finally been broken, albeit temporarily since at the moment it only lasted for as long as he wore the bracelet that Hope and Josie had made for him, but it was so much better than he had ever had before. Now he didn’t have to worry about monsters attacking him and killing him only to be resurrected just so that he could go through it all again anymore, he was free to live his life and right now he knew that he needed to find a way to take his father down. The angel had never been there for him, Ben had tried reaching out when Asher fell ill and his father had acted like he didn’t exist. Ben had no loyalty towards him, he loyalty lay with Jed and the friends that he had made during his time in Mystic Falls and his father wanted to wipe all of them along with every supernatural around the world from existence so Ben knew that he had to find a way to stop him. That was why he had headed to the shop that day and even though Ric had said that the owner could be discreet, Ben still wasn’t about to blurt out what he was to someone that he didn’t trust. “You’ve got a point but I’m not a vampire. I’ve been around since long before the Mikaelsons were even born,” he offered, knowing that it wouldn’t hurt to tell him that much at least. Ben knew that his kind were incredibly rare so he wouldn’t be surprised if the guy had never come across someone like him before. Ben himself had only ever met one other Nephilim before and that was Jack so he knew that he wasn’t the kind of supernatural that many people would have come across. “I’ve heard he can be a little temperamental but they’re not all like that,” Ben shrugged. Hope and Henrik were good people who genuinely cared about those around them so he knew that they were different from what he’d heard about Klaus but then again Ben knew that he wasn’t really in any position to judge. His way of coping with what he’d been through had been to shut himself off from people for the most part and Klaus’ was different but Ben knew that he wouldn’t be surprised if that was just his way of coping with everything that he had been through. It didn’t excuse anything or change any of the things that he had done but the guy was Hope’s dad and she was an incredible girl so Ben was certain that he couldn’t be all bad. Asking for a chambre de chasse was a big deal, Ben knew that, but he’d heard that they might be carrying one and he honestly hoped that was true. It was the best way he knew of to stop his father before he could hurt anyone else and if they were all going to stand a chance at surviving the next encounter with him then Ben knew that he had to try. “Believe me, I know,” Ben assured him. “This particular angel is bad news, he thinks anyone who is supernatural has to die so my friends and I have to try and stop him and this is the best way I know how,” he explained, knowing that he could give away that much at least. This wasn’t something that he was looking for on a whim, he needed it in order to protect the people he loved and Ben hoped that the guy would understand that. “He already killed two of my friends.” Fortunately for Hope it had triggered her vampire side and Josie had died with Hope’s blood in her system but if things had worked out differently then they might not have been as lucky. It hadn’t been easy to knock Niklaus Mikaelson on his ass. If it hadn’t been for the element of surprise and the Original hybrid’s temper, Nicky doubted they’d have managed it. The man hadn’t believed anybody would come looking for the witches, he hadn’t set up the sort of security that likely would’ve seen him and Darce dead and Mandy and Maeve left his prisoners. The sort of things that would’ve found that fight easy were older and a hell of a lot uglier than either one of them. They could’ve gone their entire lives in their quiet little corner of London without ever coming toe to toe with any of them. Only he’d had to have aspirations, didn’t he? See the world, expand the business, fail to be there when his brother had been taken and his sister-in-law had died trying to save his life. Fail to protect his sister when she brought Darce to him like he’d be able to fix it all.
That string of failures and realisations almost had Nicky laughing now. He puffed out a breath, dipping his head as he leaned into the edge of the counter. If he had any choice in the matter nothing like that would get close to any of them again. The boy’s assurances should’ve settled the question about just what it was he was facing now, but his revelation about being older than the Mikaelsons wasn’t reassuring at all. Nicky stiffened, his eyes rising slowly as he studied him. ”You don’t look it,” Nicky said tightly. The message was received though and it had him remaining wary, not daring to ask just what he was looking at. Most old things didn’t like being questioned and after what had happened, he wasn’t stupid enough to go pushing the boundaries.
Barking out actual laughter at the man’s description of Klaus probably wasn’t the way of stepping back from them, but Nicky couldn’t help himself. A little temperamental was the mildest possible way of putting it. Niklaus Mikaelson had been a powder keg that they hadn’t given the chance to explode. ”You’ve a real talent for understatin’ things,” he told him, amusement still bright in his voice. ”Maybe the others ‘ave got a better ‘old on their tempers. I’ve been told that some are easier to deal with. Whether or not they are, I don’t really care to find out.” In the end blood was thicker than water, and protecting his was going to leave him wary of anybody carrying the Mikaelson name. Any stranger showing up in here in search of special items.
Just like with any other artefact or antique, there were levels of value with the magical stock. Amulets with a simple spell were your bread and butter, worth barely more than the bauble itself. Things like the mirror Cassie had bargained with the reaper for were a step up, a chambre de chasse, that was the sort of find that could either paint a big target on your back, or make for a pretty pay day – with the right buyer. This one was mysterious, in the sort of way that left you feeling like someone was walking over your grave. An appropriate feeling given the words out of his mouth. Nicky’s brows drew together as he stared at him, even Klaus Mikaelson wasn’t that insane. ”You’re sure it’ll do what you want? They’re not fool-proof.” But they’d at least work for a time on most things and this was one that sounded like it needed to be locked away for everybody’s safety. ”You’ve got my symapthies,” he muttered. Moving to the end of the counter, Nicky lifted the hatch that gave access to behind it. ”Whoever said I might ‘ave one wasn’t wrong. Come on through. You know what you’re doin’ with it?” He wasn’t about to volunteer to help with it, but it would be foolish to sell one to someone who had no idea what they were doing when it could all blow back on him.

Ben had unintentionally become a collector of sorts over the years, he had made deals with people to help them out and there were people who had tried to help him break his curse but they had always failed and as time went on he had gathered a number of rare items in exchange. One thing he didn’t have was exactly what he needed right now, though, and that was why he had headed to the shop that day. Ric had told him that if anywhere nearby was going to have a chambre de chasse then it would be this place and Ben believed him. He knew that Ric knew exactly what he was talking about, he was a hunter and he had managed to gather a lot of rare items himself but he didn’t have one either so Ben knew that he just had to hope that the owner would. Ben had already had to stand by and watch as Hope and Josie died at the hands of his father and even though they had both come back it didn’t change the fact that their lives had been changed forever. Hope’s vampire side had been activated and Josie had come back as a Heretic so things were never going to be the way they used to be. Ben knew that he didn’t want to lose anyone else, especially not Jed, so if he could find something that would help them then he knew that he had to try. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” Ben chuckled as the guy said that he didn’t look older than the Mikaelsons. Truth be told other than angels and demons there probably wasn’t anyone in town who was older than he was and Ben knew that. Every day he was surrounded by people who were much younger than he was at the Salvatore School but the truth was that he didn’t mind at all. He knew that age was just a number but he hadn’t been able to ignore the way the guy before him had stiffened when he’d said what he had done. “I’m not going to hurt you, if that’s what you’re worried about,” he added, knowing that there wasn’t anything further from his mind than that. All Ben wanted was to find something that would stop his father and protect the people he cared about, that was it. With the way the guy had reacted before Ben hadn’t expected him to laugh at his description of Klaus but the sound was enough to draw a smile to his lips nonetheless. “When you’ve lived as long as I have you’ll have seen a lot worse, trust me,” Ben shrugged. He hadn’t wanted to speak ill of his friend’s dad but even if he hadn’t done then he knew that there were worse people and things out there. Klaus had done a lot of bad things, that much was true, but from what he’d heard the guy was trying to do better now and that went a long way as far as Ben was concerned. He had made mistakes along the way himself so he knew that he really couldn’t judge someone else for theirs. “Henrik and Hope are definitely easy people to deal with, I don’t really know the others,” he shrugged. Kol taught at the Salvatore School as well but he taught a class for vampires so Ben didn’t really have any interactions with him. As the guy asked if he was sure it would do what he wanted, Ben shook his head. “He’s an angel, I can’t really be sure of anything but I have to try,” he explained. “If we fail, there won’t be a supernatural world left.” He already carried the guilt of what his father had done to Hope and Josie around with him, he didn’t want anyone else to have to go through that. For years Ben had been on his own, he had befriended Toni and Ethan during the war but after that was over he had distanced himself from them because he hadn’t known that they were supernatural too. Everyone else he had known had either died or he’d had to leave behind when he’d moved on but this time things were different. This time he had a fiancé and friends to fight for and a family that had welcomed him as one of their own in the Saltmans. This time Ben had people he wanted to keep safe and that meant stopping his father before he hurt anyone else. “Thanks,” he nodded as the guy said he had his sympathies. Watching him lift the hatch, Ben nodded as he asked if he knew what he was doing with it. “I think so but if not my friends and I will figure it out,” he shrugged as he stepped through the hatch. What had happened to Darcey, to Mandy and Lorna was proof that London was no safer than anywhere else, but up until the sirens had targeted his brother, it had felt like their little corner of the capital was free of the worst of it at least. That probably had more to do with luck and Darcey’s quick fists than it did anything else. They watched out for their own, trying to protect the locals and make sure that the tourists weren’t gonna be able to entirely take over the place, but Mystic Falls had proved that wasn’t enough to keep people safe. It hadn’t even been enough to keep their own sister safe in the end. He'd laughed at the bloke’s words, but the tightness rapidly wrapped its way back around Nicky’s throat. It felt like he was more and more blind to what was going on here with each day that passed. If the reminders back home weren’t as bad as the ones here, he might’ve packed both Darcey and Mandy up and headed to London. They were though and after the shock of nearly losing Mandy the same way he had Lorna, Nicky doubted Darcey was ready to face all of that again. As far as he saw it, the only way through this was to stand their ground here, and that meant maybe putting themselves together another community, one they’d do more than trade with.
Nicky huffed out a breath now, but it was definitely less laughter than vague amusement. ”Most do. I guess in this town it’s not so unusual.” And that was part of the problem. Things with more power than sanity managed to slip beneath the radar because they looked like nothing more than high school kids. His gaze had slipped past the guy, back to the front door of the shop, like he expected to see Klaus and his little hybrid army about to burst in, but it slid back again. Nicky’s lips pursed faintly and he shook his head. ”It ain’t you I’m worryin’ ‘bout,” Nicky assured him. ”Ain’t myself I’m concerned for either. There are people ‘ere I’m tryin’ to keep safe.” And trouble had already found the pair of them while he’d been elsewhere. You couldn’t have grown up the way they did without being a little superstitious. If there was a third time, Nicky knew the chances were that he’d lose one of his siblings. ”Makes me glad I’m not gonna live that long,” Nicky said dryly. He’d lived through what had felt like the worst of it, he didn’t want to see what was beyond that. Maybe Klaus Mikaelson would eventually come crawling back, looking for some sort of truce, but he doubted it. Some day soon the hybrid would be back here with revenge on his mind. ”Next time one of the more difficult ones come knockin’ I might look one of them two up. I don’t take well to people hurtin’ my family.” Klaus had learned that first hand. They’d walked out leaving the hybrid and his house worse for wear.
Compared to an angel, Klaus had been child’s play. Nicky had bristled at the idea of putting a chambre de casse in the hands of someone who didn’t know what they were doing with it. Pissing off something as powerful as an angel was exponentially worse than pissing off one of the Original family. ”You think if you’ve got your ‘ands on a chambre de casse you won’t fail,” Nicky muttered without much question to it. Maybe getting out of here was the best idea after all. Seeing the walls slamming down all around him, Nicky caved and shuffled Ben through into the space behind the counter. ”You don’t want to ‘alf arse it,” he told him honestly. Pulling back the curtain that separated the front and back of the shop, Nicky led the way to the supernatural items they had stored. ”I can put together some basic instructions. Enough that you can maybe figure out the rest if it’s needed. You don’t go blabbin’ where you got this either, eh?” Bending down, he began to twist the combination into a safe, letting the spell that kept it sealed magically run through his head as he did. Just a moment later he was standing with the small wooden box in his hands.

There was a time when Ben had thought that this worst his father was capable of was cursing him for thousands of years. He had died over and over again, killed by different monsters no matter where he went, only to be brought back to life so he could go through it all again. It was an awful way to live and he’d spent such a long time trying to break his curse but to no avail. In the end it had taken him being found by Jed and Alaric to finally be free of his curse even if that freedom was only for as long as he was wearing the bracelet that Josie and Hope had made for him at the moment. They had promised that they would find a way to break his curse for good but first they had to stop his father from wiping out everyone in the world who was supernatural. Ben had known that his father was an awful person but he had proved it even more when he had killed Hope and Josie. His father claimed that it was only those who were supernatural that he planned to wipe out but Ben had seen what the angel’s ego was like and he doubted that Raziel would stop there. He had a feeling that no one would be safe from him and Ben refused to let the angel hurt anyone else that he cared about so this was his way of doing something about it. “Probably not. Looks can definitely be deceiving,” Ben nodded. He knew that he was proof of that, it had taken everyone a while to get their heads around it when he’d told them just how old he was and he really couldn’t blame them for that. As the guy said there were people in town he was trying to keep safe, Ben’s expression softened. “I can understand that, it’s the same for me,” he admitted. He had been on his own for such a long time but he’d found friends and a family in Mystic Falls. They were all people he would lay down his life for even if it meant that he wouldn’t be able to find his way back to them. He wanted to keep them safe and he knew that he wasn’t going to let anyone or anything stop him from doing that. “You’re definitely lucky for that but living this long has its advantages too,” Ben shrugged. If he hadn’t lived as long as he had done then he never would have met Jed or the others and that was something that he didn’t even want to think about. As the guy spoke again, Ben nodded. “I know they’d hear you out and help if they could. It’s worth a shot at least,” he offered. He didn’t know why the guy had had a run in with Klaus and he didn’t feel like it was his place to pry but he trusted Hope and Henrik and he knew that if there was anything that either of them could do then they would. Honestly though, right now Ben was much more worried about Raziel and as the guy said that he thought that they wouldn’t fail if he managed to get his hands on a chambre de chasse, Ben shook his head. “I never said that. What I said was that I can’t be sure of anything especially when it comes to this angel. It may not work and if it doesn’t then we’ll find another way to stop him but I have to try,” he explained. He wasn’t even sure whether it would be strong enough to hold his father but it was one of the few options he could think of right now so it was worth a shot. “Wouldn’t dream of it,” Ben assured him as the guy said he didn’t want to half ass it before following him into the back room. He could already sense that the items in here were different and that alone was enough to give him hope. “That would be appreciated, thank you,” he said sincerely as the guy offered to put together some instructions for him. “I won’t, your secret’s safe with me,” he promised before watching as the guy took a small wooden box out of the safe. “I can feel the power coming off of it,” Ben admitted as his gaze came to rest on the box. “I can’t believe it’s that small.”NICHOLAS REID

A puff of something more like laughter rolled out of Nicky. The kid might’ve looked young, but he was wise enough to know that he couldn’t take everything at face value. If they’d been in the shop back home, most would’ve walked in and dismissed the place as a dust trap. Old fur coast and 1920s dinner sets littered the front room of the shop. Antiques that could probably have fetched a bit more if they’d taken them to Petticoat Lane instead of displaying them in a poky little place on the outskirts of Camden. A stick thin man behind the counter who looked like he lived on nothing but cups of tea strong enough to eat through the spoon and his flesh alike. All of it so deceptive. There’d been things there that might’ve levelled the whole of Camden if they weren’t careful. It wasn’t that different here. The shop might’ve had a bit more gloss to it, but the Reids were still pretty much hiding in plain sight.
”They can be and that’s why bein’ careful’s so important.” In who you chose to trust – especially when you were desperate – in revealing too much. Niklaus Mikaelson had already come calling, trying to lay his hands on what was powerful here and Nicky wasn’t about to let it happen again. His expression was serious as the kid’s softened. ”We understand each other then. Whatever happens today doesn’t end up advertised all over town.” The last thing they needed was Klaus, or someone else just as power hungry, knocking down the door to get their hands on what the Reids had supposedly supplied.
The thought that the kid wouldn’t be strong enough to handle the fight that he was obviously looking to have hadn’t slid past him. Nicky studied him again before he glanced away, his brow furrowing. Looks could be deceiving, and he’d seen more than most, but it was still hard to imagine a kid so young going up against the nightmares he knew were out there in the world. Mandy had been forced to do it more than once, and she was barely out of her teens. ”They still wouldn’t be enough to convince me to stick around another century or two,” Nicky muttered. He’d dealt with too many who’d lived too long, who they’d been gradually stripped away by all that power and too many years of loss. Maybe that was Klaus Mikaelson’s problem, but he had no interest in hearing excuses from the man, or from his family. Nicky grunted all the same, knowing that if he did raise his ugly head again, he might be forced to do things he didn’t want to, like forging those alliances Ben was suggesting now. ”Maybe,” he finally said on a sigh.
In comparison to the kid’s problems, a pissed off hybrid might not’ve seemed like much, but to his family it had ended up being a nightmare. For a moment he’d thought that he wasn’t thinking through what he was about to do clearly enough. Apparently he was wrong. Nicky made a small sound of agreement. ”I don’t know where you’d go from this, but you’re right,” he said hoarsely. ”It’s worth a try.” And if the kid ended up dead anyway, he wouldn’t have the chance to tell that angel just who’d sold him the thought that had almost killed him. So far he’d not been a bad teacher for Cassie, but Nicky knew he didn’t have it in him to soft foot things to either her or this kid.
”Good.” He let out a long breath as he showed Ben through to the stock room at the back. The safe wasn’t like a bank vault, it didn’t take up half the shop, but it didn’t need to be that big to contain the powerful items they’d stocked in it. The box that he retrieved was probably smaller than a shoebox, utterly deceptive to any that saw it. ”You thought it was gonna be the size of a wardrobe?” Amusement touched his words. ”These things are far bigger on the inside. You wanna inspect it before you take it out of ‘ere?” Nicky carried it over to the small table set up in the room. Back home his word would’ve been trusted implicitly by those who knew the family, but it was different here.
