The light had begun to dip from the sky as he pulled up outside the Grill. Night might have been coming in, but the people of Mystic Falls were still bustling along the sidewalks. Heading for dinner with families, kids racing ahead of their parents, or window shopping, kids noses pressed to the windows of the shops catered to them. Christmas was just a month away now and little heads were gonna be filled with thoughts of what Santa was bringing and if they were gonna end up on the naughty or nice list this year. But not his.
Derek sat in the front of the truck for a moment, frowning down at the screen of his phone. The call log filled with unanswered calls. It could’ve just been Argent seeing his name flash up on his screen and choosing not to deal with it. He hoped not. In the years since he’d been found out in the woods by Scott and Stiles he’d entered an alliance with Argent – an uneasy one maybe, but they’d come together to deal with the problems as pack adjuncts when it was needed. Now there was radio silence and no response to the doorbell at the house. Six hours of trying to track the guy down and he was about to give in and deal with the message on his own.
Kids streamed past the front end of the truck, drawing his eye up for a moment. Teenagers, not much younger than he’d been when his teen years had come to a painful end. It was an Argent who’d done that, taking the hatred her father had instilled in her and turning it against the problem in town, like Talia Hale hadn’t had as much to do with keeping the peace in Mystic Falls as Gerard Argent had ever done. The life he’d known going up in flames, leaving nothing but scorched earth behind. Years had gone by before anything had begun to spring up there with new signs of life. It’d been fragile, broken time and time again, but it held on tenaciously, nurtured in spurts until he could believe that something was gonna grow back there as strong as ever.
They would be stamped out eventually. Derek looked away from the kids with a frown as he thumbed at the phone screen, flipping from the call log to the messages. The anonymous one that he come in this morning right there at the top – ‘Possible sighting of one of them a mile east of town. Near where you were. Maybe another experiment dropped. Worth checking out.’ No name, the number blank too, as though it had somehow magicked itself onto his phone. Still only two possible names though – three if you wanted to count the things that had twisted him in the first place. Braeden, Alix, the Dread Doctors. Probably not them, why give him a warning if they were just looking to take back what they’d made theirs without any real effort in the first place. That took it down to two and common sense said that no matter which of the two women who had divided his life since he’d come back had sent it, it was wise not to go out alone. That left Argent.
Jaw tight, Derek pushed open the door and stepped out onto the sidewalk. He could’ve called Scott, maybe Stiles, but the questions would’ve rushed in and he wasn’t taking either one of them with him. If Argent wasn’t at home, wasn’t at the other end of a call maybe he was on a job already, but he was gonna try the square, the hub of life in this town first, and if there was no sign then he’d go alone. Messages sent as he headed into the woods would be enough of a heads up, just enough time for him to get there first to try and figure this out before the cavalry rushed in – ticked off and eager in equal parts.
Minutes later the Diner and Campbell’s had been crossed off his list. Argent didn’t seem the coffee shop type – that was far too civil for a man who dealt death, even on the human side of things. That left the Grill. Derek’s gaze raked the front window of the place as he walked up to the door, fixing in the end on a brunette at the pool table. He wouldn’t have called Allison Argent the next best thing, but she was a connection, a way through to her dad. Waving off the waitress who bustled up to him, Derek slid through the crowds to the table. The game was wrapping as he approached, only one winner of course. He tugged a dollar bill from his pocket, set it on the corner of the table. ”Next game’s mine.” As Allison looked at him, his expression hardened a little. ”I was looking for your dad,” he said tightly. ”Chris.” Because that wasn’t Allison. It was subtle, like it apparently was with all the doppelgangers, the visual overwhelming everything else.

It had been a while since Athena had made her way to Mystic Falls and she had started finding people who knew her for her rather than because Allison looked just like her during that time. She knew that she could have moved on a long time ago but despite the high supernatural presence the town actually seemed like a decent place to build a life. Athena had moved around more times than she cared to admit and the truth was that she really wasn’t in a hurry to do that again just yet. Having Lukas and Axel around was a bonus, she had raised Lukas after Tatia had died and she had helped him with Axel after his wife had died so it was good to be around family again. Add to that the fact that the Mikaelsons were in town and she’d had the chance to reconnect with Niklaus and the truth was that things could be a lot worse. There were times when even now she was still mistaken for Allison and it was frustrating to say the least when that happened but Athena knew that there were some people in town who would never be able to get their heads around the fact that doppelgangers were real. So many seemed happy to buy into the lie that Tatia and Elena were twins even though the two of them were clearly from different times and it was the same with her and Allison. Athena had done her research, she knew that the girl had been through a lot and if she was honest the fact that the Argents were in Mystic Falls was one of the reasons why Athena had decided to stick around for as long as she had done. She didn’t have much in the way of family so she knew to take whatever time with them that she could get. Athena had learned pretty quickly that there would be plenty to keep her busy in Mystic Falls as far as hunting went, she knew to only go after those who posed a threat to others but there seemed to be quite a lot of those in Mystic Falls so she could never say that she found herself getting bored. She knew to take some downtime between cases when she had the chance, though, and that was exactly what she had decided to do that day. It had been an easy decision to head to the Grill since not only could she have a few drinks and something to eat while she was there but she could also have a little fun by making some money playing pool. She didn’t need the money, it was more about the companionship and competition for a while if she was honest. Athena was used to being alone but there were times when even she wanted to be around others and this seemed like a pretty good way of doing just that. By the time a voice spoke up saying the next game was his Athena was already one drink and two wins in and she felt a smile touch her lips as she looked over at the newcomer. “You’re not even really making it worth my time with that but I’ll allow it this once,” she said, nodding towards the single dollar bill he had set down on the corner of the table. “You’re lucky I’m feeling generous, the buy-in is normally much higher,” she said, her smile turning to a smirk as she flagged down a passing waitress and ordered herself another drink. As he said he was looking for her dad, a sigh escaped her lips. “And here I was thinking that you might prove to be more than just a pretty face,” she said, her tone laced with disappointment. “If you’re looking for one of the Argents you’re in for a disappointment,” she said, thanking the waitress as she returned with her drink before taking a sip. Tapping the glass with her finger, her expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “You know what, you’ve caught me in a good mood. If it was Chris’ help with something you were looking for then I can do better than that. I’ve been in the game much longer than he has,” she said as she racked the balls up and handed a cue to her companion. “How about you break and tell me what’s on your mind, handsome?”DEREK HALE

If it had been anybody but Allison at the table, he wouldn’t have bothered with the buy in. The game was just a means to an end, a cover for a conversation that Derek imagined was going to be intense. Hearing that your father was possibly missing and the things that had been snatching people up and twisting them into unnatural things wasn’t going to give you a case of the warm and fuzzies. Delicacy in these things wasn’t his forte – he hadn’t taken after his mother in that regard – but Derek figured he could at least sugar coat this to some degree before the situation turned.
The Argents had no more cause to like his family than he did theirs. He had been the one to bite Victoria in the end, ultimately taking her life rather than letting her kill an innocent kid who hadn’t asked to be turned in the first place. He’d clashed with Chris himself enough times that Allison probably didn’t have much cause to trust him now.
It wasn’t Allison though, Derek realised it the moment she turned towards him. He’d have said he had a cause to confuse the two of them, but he should’ve known instantly that it wasn’t Allison standing there, smirking over the dollar bill he’d set down on the edge of the table. Doppelgangers might’ve been identical in looks, but just the feel of each of them was different enough if you knew how to sense it.
Derek made a low sound of amusement, studying the cues for a moment. His expression was cool as he turned back to her. ”I guess that’s one way to make money in this town.” Hustling pool might provide a little pocket change, but he had no interest in that. The family had always kept their nest egg and that meant he wasn’t grubbing around for a few bucks the way Stiles or Scott had been forced to at times. He sat back against the edge of the table, not rushing to start the game up. ”That’s just a bonus,” he informed her, adding some warmth to that pretty face with a half smile.
He tapped a boot lightly against the floor, studying her as she took the drink from the waitress. That would’ve been another sign that it wasn’t Allison he was looking for. ”I was, but you weren’t the one I was hoping to find.” Not Marie-Jeanne either then. This was the first of them, the one far older than the rest. She’d have heard about it, he was betting, but there was still that reluctance to draw her into it until she turned to him and offered her help away. It didn’t take a psychic to realise that if he was looking for Chris or Allison then there was probably something in it worth her time.
She made her offer as she racked the balls and held a cue out to him. Derek stood, taking it from her. He took a moment to look at the racked balls before he took his shot. The tightly packed balls scattered, one of the stripes shooting straight into a far pocket. There’d been plenty of time to play when he was a teenager, before the world had gone to hell in a hand basket. ”I’m guessing you’ve heard all about the little Dread Doctor problem we’re having in town. Folks going missing? Coming back different – like some kid with a folklore book’s drawn their own mash-up version of the scariest monster they can think of?” He didn’t doubt that she’d heard about his own entanglement with them, what Scott had done to put him back to how he’d been. ”I received a message to say they’d taken someone else. That they’ve maybe dropped them out in the woods somewhere. I was looking for Chris to get him to head out there with me.” Not because he was scared of those things – but it was time to start trusting people to be his back-up.

Mystic Falls was a big enough place that Athena had been able to avoid running into her doppelganger or people who knew the girl too often but she couldn’t avoid it completely. There were those in the know who could tell the difference between them and there were others that she had to set straight about who she was. Athena knew that she could have played along and pretended to be Allison but the truth was that wasn’t her style, nor did she have any desire to have to pretend to be a college student. Athena had lived a long time and she knew that there were some who liked starting out passing themselves off as being as young as possible when they started out in a new place so that they could stay there longer but that just wasn’t her. Athena had moved around so much that she had learned to keep to herself and even though there was a part of her that wanted to do things a little differently this time, she knew that that was going to be much easier said than done. That didn’t mean that she was going to stop trying, though, not by a long shot and that was what had brought her to the Grill that day. She knew that chances were she wouldn’t know any of the patrons but she would at least be surrounded by people and she could still have some fun while she was there so as far as she was concerned that wasn’t a bad thing. She planned on having something to eat while she was there but right now she was focused on having some fun and so far she had already ended up beating a couple of guys at pool. The latest challenger was one she had seen around and the bill he offered up really wasn’t worth her time but she couldn’t deny that she was intrigued about what he wanted so she knew that she wasn’t going to turn it down. “Between you and me I don’t need the money, I just like seeing the looks on the guys’ faces when they realise they’re outmatched,” Athena shrugged. Truth be told she was used to people underestimating her and she knew that it was never going to change. As he said that the pretty face was a bonus, Athena’s expression turned to one of amusement. “Is that so? Prove it,” she challenged, knowing that she was interested to see what he could come up with. “I’m sorry to disappoint,” Athena said as her companion said she wasn’t the one he was hoping to find. Lifting her glass to her lips, she took a sip. “I’m not even an Argent so you’re way off base here,” she added. She wasn’t sure what this guy knew of her but he knew enough to know that she wasn’t Allison at least. “I’m Athena,” she said as she held a hand out to him, knowing that they might as well get on first name terms if they were going to continue talking. Holding the cue out to him, Athena watched as he took his shot. “Not bad,” she admitted as he managed to pot one of the stripes on the first shot. As he mentioned the Dread Doctors, Athena’s face fell. “I have. I’ve actually been looking for them while I’ve been in town but I haven’t found their hideout yet,” she shrugged. Truth be told that annoyed her but she knew that she just had to be patient. As he explained why he was here, Athena’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “In that case it looks like you’ll have to make do with me instead. I may not be who you were looking for but I have certain talents that might come in useful and more experience hunting than the others put together,” she said at last, knowing that she couldn’t turn her back on someone who might need help. “And here I was hoping for a quiet evening,” she sighed as she took another sip of her drink, pretty sure that now her plan to have something to eat while she was there was going to end up having to wait. What was he going to do now? The question had been kicking around in his head for a handful of years, but while they’d been in Beacon Hills there’d always been some sort of trouble on the horizon as a distraction. That wasn’t to say that he hadn’t found Mystic Falls to be just as steeped in trouble, but in the idle moments it was like he was holding his breath, waiting for something to guide his life. Derek had found himself laughing over it when Erica had tossed the question at him, but now, as he put the money on the edge of the table, he wondered if now was the time to embrace adulthood the way others did. Get a job, find a difference sense of responsibility – he wasn’t about to start considering settling down for a future with someone, or kids, God forbid, not until things really were settled. Be a productive member of society, instead of someone still relying on the well-padded bank accounts that had allowed most of his family to go without the usual worries. Now, Derek hummed in amusement, eyeing the bill for a moment. ”That makes two of us. I guess this this is different, since I already know that I am.” Plenty of people had proved it to him over the last couple of years, the lessons finally beginning to stick in a way that he still couldn’t appreciate. He didn’t move to rack up the balls, or grab a cue, just sat and continued to smile at Allison’s doppelganger. ”In time,” he said lightly. ”I’m not the sort of guy who likes to show off.” Flashy had rarely been his thing, he left that up to Peter, who likely would’ve taken one look at the doppelgangers and started calculating how they could possibly benefit him.
He curled his fingers over the edge of the table, continuing to watch the woman from the corner of his eye. As she sipped at her drink, washing the apology over his disappointment from her lips, Derek shook his head. ”There’s disappointment, this might be better for all involved.” If Argent was in trouble, then he’d likely appreciate his resurrected daughter from being dragged into the possible trouble. She might not have been an Argent, but being Allison’s doppelganger meant that she was close enough. ”I know what you are,” Derek told her as he shook the hand she offered him. ”Derek Hale. You’re the first?” He hadn’t been at the heart of everything that happened when Allison had turned up here – well, what had been left of her had done. Much of what had happened since he’d been on the fringes of too, only starting to make his way back in once the bite had fixed what the Dread Doctors had broken.
Taking the cue was like offering a hand to Athena to draw her into the centre of things. Derek curled over the table, taking his first shot with the ease of someone who’d spent too much of their youth in places like this. ”I’ll take the compliment,” he said lightly, straightening up. He saw her expression changed and felt that twisting in the pit of his stomach again. ”It seems like nobody’s had any luck doing that. We’ve been searching since … they arrived. They might as well be on another planet.” It couldn’t have been far from where he’d been found, in a town this size, with everybody looking, they couldn’t have been transporting people too far. If Chris had found the place finally, then they needed to do the same, before he too came out with yellow or bright blue eyes – or worse yet, a tail. Derek made a small sound of agreement as he bent to take another shot. ”I’d say it runs in the family, but I guess you’re a far cry from them.” He wouldn’t put those talents aside though, not when they would obviously be useful. ”It might still be quiet. Finish the game or call it a win for me?” Amusement he hadn’t expected to find added an arrogant edge to his smile as he potted another ball.
