”Okay, so. I was thinking of maybe going on a vacation at the end of this Semester? Obviously not me alone, but all of us. Would you be up for that? Because I feel like a change in scenery would definitely help, no?” Jenna spoke up from where she was in the kitchen, currently preparing dinner for them. Today had been a long day at work and they could definitely use a meal to close the day off with, along with a glass of wine or two. ”I don’t know where we’d go, though. We can definitely look at some destinations on our day off, if you want?” Jenna questioned, her eyes lifting up from the food she was currently cooking to look at Alaric, her lips stretching into a gentle smile.
”Oh, would you be a dear and fetch us the wine bottle, please? I have the glasses up in this cabinet.” She pointed to her left side where the cabinet currently was before she returned to what she was doing. She flipped the omelet onto the other side to cook it well before she transferred it onto a plate.
Jenna then grabbed the tomatoes to wash them and cut them into bite sizes to have along with cucumber and chopped carrots just to have on the side. She began transferring the plates over to the table, one after the other until she was pleased with the way the table looked. ”The kids ate already, by the way. That’s why I cooked only for the two of us. I figured we could use some privacy.” She pointed out with a quick nod of her head following, lips stretching to form a gentle smile as she claimed her seat so she could start eating.

“Definitely, I think we could all use it after the last year or so we’ve had,” Ric nodded as he leaned against the kitchen counter. They had all been through so much and it could have easily ripped them all apart but it hadn’t done, if anything it had brought them all that much closer together. He had spent a lot of time worrying about how Lizzie and Josie were doing but they seemed to have adjusted to what had happened and even though Ric knew that most of the memories he had of their childhood was fake, he couldn’t deny that he was proud of the young women that they had become and he was enjoying getting to know them. “We can do that. Is there anywhere you’ve ever thought that you would always want to go?” he asked, knowing that if there was anywhere like that then he would make it happen. Jenna had given him so much and she had helped him build the kind of life that he had felt sure would always be beyond his reach and he knew that he wanted to give as much back to her as he could. “Sure,” he said, a smile forming on his face as Jenna asked him to grab the bottle of wine. That meant only one thing, they were going to be eating alone that evening. They both knew that they could drink in front of the kids if they wanted to but they never did. It had taken Ric a while to realise that it was time to change his ways and stop drinking as much as he once had done but having Kyle and Abby move in with him had been enough to make him realise that it was time that he stepped up and started being a responsible parent and the twins being born had given him even more of a reason to do that. He didn’t have to worry about trying to drown his sorrows any longer and it was liberating to say the least. “Are you sure I can’t do anything to help?” he offered as he grabbed the wine and the glasses. Finding the corkscrew in the drawer, he popped the cork before pouring each of them a glass and setting them down at their places on the table. “A spontaneous date night, I like it,” he admitted as he took his own seat and lifted his glass to his lips so he could take a sip. “What’s the occasion?”JENNA SALTZMAN

Definitely, I think we could all use it after the last year or so we’ve had,
Jenna nodded her head in agreement with Ric's words. "Yup. Exactly. We've put all our strength into raising these little girls and I definitely think we deserve a break." Jenna said with a chuckle following. Though don't get her wrong, there's nothing she wouldn't do for these girls and she really loves them, from the bottom of her heart. But they could all use a break and a change in scenery, that's why she was planning to go on that little trip.
We can do that. Is there anywhere you’ve ever thought that you would always want to go? Are you sure I can’t do anything to help? A spontaneous date night, I like it, What’s the occasion?
Jenna released a small hum at that before she shook her head slowly. "Not really, no. I mean, when I was a kid, Hawaii sounded really magical but at the same time, I feel like it's pretty much a hot spot now. We could ask the girls, or we could write a bunch of location names on small pieces of paper and draw randomly. Who knows. I'm sure we can figure something out." Jenna continued what she was doing and when Alaric's question came through, she shook her head with a gentle smile on her lips. "No, it's okay. Thanks, baby." Jenna said with a soft smile. "I'm pretty much done anyway," she added a moment later, her voice soft.
Jenna let out a chuckle at Alaric's words before she shrugged her shoulders. "Yup. A spontaneous date night." She carried the food to the table before she sat down at last and took a sip from her drink. "I'm glad you do." She added a moment later when Alaric told her that he liked it. "Nothing, really. I just thought we could both use a night like this. We've both been so busy with the school and the kids, so I wanted to do a little something special for us."

Ric knew that things hadn’t worked out the way that any of them had thought they would over the last couple of years but he knew that Henrik had been trying to protect his family and Ric really couldn’t blame him for that. He had hated the fact that he hadn’t known about Kyle or Abby until they were teenagers, he had missed out on their entire childhoods and he knew that they could have easily hated him for that but thankfully they had understood and now he was close to both of them. When he’d arrived in Mystic Falls he hadn’t thought that he would have a life that was anything like the one he had now but he knew that he wouldn’t want it any other way. He had Jenna and the kids now and even though to some looking from the outside in they might seem like a strange family, it worked for all of them and he knew that that was just as it should be. “I couldn’t agree with it more, the kids will love it too,” Ric admitted. A lot of the memories they all had of Lizzie and Josie were fake as they were created by the spell that had swept over Mystic Falls but Ric cherished each and every one of those memories and he hoped that the rest of the family did as well. A trip would give them the chance to make some great memories together, though, and he knew that he was never going to pass up the chance to do that. “We’ll definitely figure something out. If you want to go to Hawaii then we can go there, I’m sure the kids won’t argue with the chance to relax on the beach for a week or so and there would be plenty of other things to do as well.” Ric wasn’t really too bothered where they went as long as they got to spend some time together as a family and other than their honeymoon he couldn’t remember the last time he’d had the chance to go on holiday and he wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same for Jenna. “Alright, if you’re sure,” Ric said, unable to deny that he felt a little guilty that he hadn’t been able to do anything to help. “Well, I appreciate it. We don’t do this often enough, maybe we should start setting aside an evening a week for a date night now that the kids don’t need us quite as much,” he suggested, taking a sip of his drink before sitting down at the table and tucking into the meal that Jenna had cooked for them. “Mmm, this is delicious.”JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna nodded her head in agreement with Alaric when he mentioned that the kids will definitely love it. "That I know for certain." Jenna said with a grin locked on her lips. "It's going to be wonderful." She was excited for it and that's for sure. "Yeah, I really like that as well. The girls are definitely going to love it. I can just imagine myself sitting out in the sun, getting a nice tan, and enjoying an incredulously expensive drink with a little umbrella on top." Jenna said with a chuckle falling from her lips as she pictured herself having a wonderful time with her little family.
Alright, if you’re sure, Well, I appreciate it. We don’t do this often enough, maybe we should start setting aside an evening a week for a date night now that the kids don’t need us quite as much, Mmm, this is delicious.
"I'm sure. Tonight is about spoiling you, so let me do the spoiling." Jenna said with a grin forming on her lips. She knew Ric, she knew he'd be feeling guilty for not helping her but honestly, she wanted to do this for him. "Yeah, we've been busy with the kids, school, and everything else. I definitely missed this." Jenna nodded her head in agreement with Ric on his next point. "We should definitely start doing that." Jenna sat down and took a bite from the food, humming in delight at the taste that resided on her tongue. "Thank you, thank you." Jenna mockingly bowed her head like an actress being greeted on a big stage. "It's definitely delicious, if I'm allowed to say that myself." Jenna said with a grin as she took another bite, enjoying the little date night with Ric. It definitely felt quite nice. It felt like she couldn't get enough.

“It is. Shall we get something booked and then tell them or tell them first? I’ve never really done this before,” Ric admitted. In the past when he had travelled he’d only had to worry about himself but things were different now. Now he not only had Jenna to think about they had the twins, Elena, Jeremy, Kyle and Abby as well. He wasn’t sure that they would all want to go but he was certain that Josie and Lizzie would at least so it was bound to be good for them to get away for a while. So much had happened over the last few years and they were all doing their best to deal with it but some time away from it all to just relax and be a family was something that he was pretty sure that they all needed right now. “I can just picture you doing that. Beaches have never really been my thing but it will be good to get away and I’m sure there will be other things we can do too.”Not a day went by when Ric didn’t think of himself as being incredibly lucky. This was the kind of life that he had thought that he would never get to have, he had a beautiful wife he loved and who loved him in return and even though things were a little complicated with the kids they still made it work. Their family might seem strange to anyone looking from the outside in but it was perfect for them and he knew that that was all that mattered. “Alright, you won’t hear any arguments from me,” Ric assured her, knowing that she would probably kill him if he tried. “So have I, we need to start doing this more often,” he admitted. It was easy to get wrapped up in their work and the kids and forget to set aside any time for themselves. Now the kids didn’t need them as much and Ric knew that he wanted to make sure that they got to spend more time together. “That’s sorted then. Since you’ve arranged this tonight I’ll figure out something we can do next week.” He knew that it was only fair since Jenna had gone to so much trouble to make tonight special for them. Taking a bite of his meal, Ric couldn’t help but laugh at Jenna’s next words. “You’ve outdone yourself this time, I don’t know how you’re going to top it,” he grinned as he took a sip of his drink. “How much time do you think we have before the kids get home?”JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna released a small hum at that as she thought about it for a moment. "That is a good question." Jenna tapped on her chin as she found herself in deep thought of what to do. "I think we should get something booked and then tell them. Make it a little surprise for them." Jenna said with a smile already forming on her lips.
Jenna let out a soft gasp at that when Ric told her that beaches have never been his thing. "That's a shame. I love the beach so much. Something about listening to the waves makes me feel so happy deep down." Jenna admitted with a soft smile already beginning to form on her lips at the thought. "Yeah, exactly. We will eat out a lot, that's for sure. Try coconut water and all of the things that typical tourists do." Jenna said with a grin forming on her lips. "I'm one hundred percent on getting the full tourist treatment."
Jenna's lips stretched into a grin at that. "Now that's more like that." She said with a teasing voice. "We definitely do." Jenna agreed with Ric when he said that they need to start doing this more often. "There's nothing stopping us now. The girls are all grown up and the others have their own things to do as well. We can do this whenever we want." Jenna said with a grin forming on her lips. "I'm looking forward to it, then." There was definitely an excited smile already forming on Jenna's lips at the thought of what Ric was going to do next week. "Oh, thank you!" Jenna's lips stretched into a grin at that. "I'm glad you like the food." Jenna took another bite from her food, releasing a small hum. "I'd say a couple of hours, at best. Three, maybe." Jenna said with a quick nod of her head following as she turned her head to check the time. "Why, babe?"

The house was always so busy these days but Ric knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Lizzie, Josie and Jed definitely knew how to keep them on their toes and the other kids tended to come and go as well. This was the kind of family that Ric had always wanted but he had started to think that he would never get the chance to have so the truth was that he was beyond proud of everything that he and Jenna had built together. “I think that’s a good idea, I can’t wait to see their faces,” he admitted. He and Jenna both worked so hard and the kids were doing their best in school so he knew that it would be good for them to take a trip as a family. The gasp his comment about breaches never being his thing brought from Jenna was enough to bring a smile to his lips. “You know me, I’ve always been the kind of guy who likes to keep busy,” he chuckled. Before he and Jenna got together he had often found himself out and about doing something because the truth was that he hadn’t been able to bring himself to sit still for too long after Isobel became a vampire but he had been working on that ever since he and Jenna got together. “I know how much you like the beach and the girls will too. Even Jed will probably like to take it easy for a while so we’ll make it work,” he added, knowing that he wasn’t going to be the reason why they weren’t able to go somewhere that the rest of the family would like to go. “It has to be done. That’s part of the fun of it,” Ric nodded as Jenna said she wanted to do all of the things that typical tourists did. Ric couldn’t help but laugh as Jenna said that his comment about her not hearing any arguments from him was more like it. He knew that she wouldn’t let him get away with helping since she seemed intent on spoiling him and truth be told he knew that he would enjoy it anyway. “Now you’ve put the idea in my head we definitely will. We’ll make this a regular thing,” Ric grinned. He knew that he would never get enough of spending time with Jenna so he was definitely up for it. “Same here,” he nodded as Jenna said that she was looking forward to what he organised for next week. What that was going to be he had no idea but he knew that he would figure something out. “I definitely do,” he admitted as Jenna said she was glad he liked the food, taking another bite of his meal before a sip of his drink to wash it down. As she said they had at least a few hours before the kids got home, a playful smile touched Ric’s lips. “I was thinking we could make the most of having the house to ourselves,” he said, pretty sure she would know what he meant. Jenna felt a soft smile tug at the corner of her lips as she nodded her head in agreement with Alaric. She was definitely looking forward to it, too. The girls deserved a break, for sure. They all did. So, she was definitely looking forward to that time off with her perfect little family. The thought was enough to put a smile on her lips. “Yeah, I know.” Jenna confirmed with a grin forming on her lips not long after, her eyes relaxing on Ric, watching him with a tenderness in her gaze.
“Has that boy ever been to a beach?” Jenna thought aloud before she released a soft hum. “Either way, we’ll make this work. No worries.” Jenna added a moment later with a quick nod of her head following. “We can even invite Ben. He’s like family too, no?” Jenna suggested with a half-smile tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes relaxed on Alaric once again. “Unless you’d prefer it’s just us? I’m honestly okay with it either way. Just as long as I have you guys.” Jenna revealed a moment later, her shoulders lifting and dropping into a quick shrug. “Oooh, you make a pretty good point.” She pointed her index finger at Alaric, nodding her head in agreement. “In that case, we’ll act like the tourists that we are.” Jenna added with a grin tugging at the edges of her lips.
Jenna seemed pleased to hear that they will be making this a regular thing. They deserved to have that little time for themselves, just enjoying each other’s company. It didn’t take long for Jenna to know exactly what Alaric meant when he said that they could make the most of having the house to themselves. “Oh, I like the way you think.” Jenna said with a teasing smile already tugging at the corner of her lips. “In that case, we’ll definitely make the most of it.” Lord knows that doesn’t happen that often.

Not a day went by these days when Ric didn't find himself thinking about just how lucky he was. He had wanted a family of his own got as long as he could remember and even though the one he and Jenna had now might be considered strange to some, the truth was that he loved it. They had Jenna's niece and nephew, Ric's kids from his first relationship and three kids of their own. Jed wasn't theirs by blood but he was one of their kids just as much as any of the others were. Ric hadn't thought that he would get the chance to have this and he was incredibly proud of everything that he and Jenna had built together. Seeing the look Jenna gave him was enough to bring a smile to Ric's lips in return as he looked over at his wife. "I don't think so, he said he'd never been outside of Mystic Falls until he and Ben went away," Ric admitted. It was a shame really but Ben had managed to get Jed out of Mystic Falls for a while and Ric was certain that he and Jenna would be able to do the same. "Ben is definitely family, I think Jed would love to invite him along and I think Josie would love to have Hope there as well," he nodded. "Perhaps we should make it a bit of an extended family vacation," he suggested, knowing that it wouldn't be fair to invite Ben without inviting Hope as well especially since Hope had been like a daughter to them for a long time too. It would leave just Lizzie without someone but she could always decide to bring a friend along if she wanted to. "I'm looking forward to it," he grinned as Jenna said that they would act like the tourists that they were going to be. It was easy to get caught up in everything that was going on and have their relationship take a backseat and Ric didn't want that to happen. He loved Jenna and he knew that he wanted to make sure they did this more often so he was so glad that Jenna was on board with it too. "I was hoping you would say that," Ric chuckled, a playful smile touching his lips as he leaned forward and kissed her. "There's even a brand new tub of ice cream in the freezer if we want it later."JENNA SALTZMAN

Jenna released a small hum before she nodded her head. "Plenty of chances for us to take him on vacation, then." She replied with a half-smile resting on her lips. "An extended family vacation definitely sounds good. I think with everything that's happened, we all deserve this." Jenna said with a quick nod following. It all seemed like a good idea, especially after what has happened to the kids all thanks to Ben's father. They deserve to have all that weight and pressure removed from their shoulders, even if its just for the duration of their vacation. The circumstances were definitely unkind to the kids, but she was proud of them for thriving and surviving under such harsh circumstances. "Me too." Jenna said, her soft tone still detectable.
Jenna returned the kiss with a smile resting on her lips, enjoying the gesture while it lasted until they leaned back. "Oh, a man after my own heart." Jenna placed her hand on her heart with a chuckle leaving her lips not long after. Jenna was relieved that they could still have a chance to be together like this, especially after they've had such a rocky past couple of weeks (or months, depending on how you look at it), it felt great to just unwind and find herself in Alaric's presence like this. It helped ease the weight off her shoulders. It helped her disconnect from that part of her brain that was always looking for solutions to all their problems. She deserved that break, for sure. She was happy that she could have this with Ric.

With a family as large as theirs had become it hadn’t been easy to get everyone together to even talk about a family holiday let alone make one happen but now things were different. Elena, Jeremy, Kyle and Abby were often off doing their own thing which meant that Ric and Jenna just had Josie, Lizzie and Jed to think about a lot of the time. They hadn’t taken the kids away before but it was something that Ric was pretty sure that they all needed right now so he was determined to make it happen and he knew that Jenna was as well. “Definitely. He’s already been to New Orleans but there are plenty of other places that we could go,” Ric nodded. He knew that they would need to factor it around the full moon to make sure that Jed wouldn’t end up transforming in a place that wasn’t familiar to him but he knew that they could do that. “I think so too. Lizzie might want to bring a friend along as well to make sure she’s not surrounded by all couples,” he admitted. The last thing he wanted was for their daughter to feel like she was the odd one out with Ben and Hope there so with any luck the offer would help. Ric hated the fact that the kids were going through so much and he wanted to make sure that they had the chance to relax for a while before having to get back to reality. As Jenna said that she was looking forward to it as well, Ric couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face as he looked over at his wife. It was good to still be able to be like this with Jenna after everything that had happened. It would have been so easy for them to let their relationship take a hit when the girls came along but they hadn’t done, they had gone from strength to strength and they had still made sure that they had time for each other away from the kids. Ric had never thought that he would ever get to have a life like this and he knew just how lucky he was to have found that with Jenna. They had worked hard to build everything that they had now and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He really did love her more now than ever and as she said he was a man after her own heart, Ric couldn’t help but laugh. “I know you far too well by now,” he grinned as he took another bite of his meal, knowing that that was as it should be.
