Legs kicked out into the path, arms stretched along the back of the bench, Kace tipped his head back and closed his eyes. If he could’ve actually felt anything he might’ve basked for a while with the late winter sun pouring down on his face, but what was on the other side of that thinning barrier was still mostly beyond his reach. He could touch a little, get things to shift if he put some real emotional punch behind it but for the most part it was like being underwater or out in space. You could see things, you knew they were there but somehow you were in your own little bubble.
His mouth pursed in its surround of scruff, blue eyes slitting open so he was looking up at that faded blue sky through sandy lashes. If he squinted hard enough it might’ve been like laying on the beach at Redondo, without the sun baking the salt of his last ride into his skin. Hair bleaching under the heat of it, sand working its way under the waist of his wet suit as he craned up to take a pull on a bottle of beer one of them would’ve brought in a cooler. Now, Kace thought bitterly, it was just a vague coolness all the time, like the sun was already down instead of directly overhead. None of that sunshine penetrating whatever kept him held here, in the same state he’d been in when he’d died.
When the jackass walking into the club across the street now had slipped that blade between his lips and this dumbass had realised too fucking late that he hadn’t thought before he’d decided to stick a movie on and drift off to sleep with the sounds of war buzzing under his skin instead of the clatter of the bar.
Kace breathed out through his nose, lifted his hands to cover his face for a moment and scrub it away. In that direction of thinking lay madness and that was the one thing he could actually avoid … for a while at least. You had to hold on to your humanity if you didn’t want to become of the things that terrified the fuck out of the people around you and got dealt with. The thing that had come to give him the choice, the reaper, had made it pretty clear that this didn’t tend to be an endless period of shits and giggles. Everybody slipped in the end and at some point after it happened there would be someone who knew about these things who came along to make sure the screams stopped and then … you were just gone. No happy afterlife and eternity of pain and misery … nothing.
And of course he didn’t fucking want that, so he played.
They’d done it on the beaches in LA, sprawled on the sand as the light had gone down and the tourists had started to drift around instead of just laying there baking. Outta ten, no question on whether or not you’d try to take them home or whether or not a shitty personality would wipe a half dozen points off. Just that first knee jerk reaction on the surface. 1 to 10, a pure objectification.
He dropped his arms back against the back of the bench, teeth tugging at his lower lip as he watched a mother and kid stroll across the square. Maybe the kid glanced his way a little but there wasn’t a flicker of reaction in the mother’s pretty face. ”Solid 7,” Kace breathed, his face feeling a little rusty with disuse. He tilted his head slightly, watching them pass a guy coming up the other way. Young but sour looking, the pinch to his mouth knocking points off without him even opening it. ”Three and half. Try smiling a little more man.” The guy wouldn’t though, that type never did and by the time the guy hit even his age those sour lines woulda carved deep.
Kace tapped his thumb against the back rail of the bench as though he’d even be able to feel it. Nobody else for a moment but then the little blonde came into sight. He squinted, the lines carved by the sun into an arc around his own eyes springing up faintly. Now this one wanted them to look, he thought, and it worked for her, with those painted lips and bleached curls and attitude for days. ”That’s a 9, maybe even a 9 and a half … don’t go to the club honey, Kit’ll make a calculation on that and you don’t wanna get involved there, hear me?” She wouldn’t of course, they never did. So few could see through that misty mystical shower curtain to see what was lurking just out of sight.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Bad idea. Probably a really bad idea.
After Monique’s reaction to her little story, Cassie should’ve known better than to go back. Not only was it reckless and stupid, but it had ended on a weird note. She didn’t exactly want to relive that embarrassment, no matter how cute he was. It just wasn’t worth it, especially if she was going to get chomped on by the end (even though she’d be the one asking for it).
She got dressed up to go anyways. The sun was still out, so maybe she was just a bit too early. But if he couldn’t step outside with her, and had to stay in the confines of the club, she wouldn’t mind━Cassie could even help him with that problem now. If he wanted her help. If he even wanted to talk to her at all…
She whisked away the negative thoughts with a whisk of her hair, replaced what was in her mind with what she wanted to think. She was an awesome presence to be around; she was happy, optimistic, and told people exactly what she was thinking━maybe not everybody could appreciate it, but that was their problem, not hers. As far as Cassie was concerned, she was a hoot.
And, apparently, even complete strangers thought so, too.
Cassie hadn’t been paying attention to the man sitting on the bench. She’d been staring at the club just a few feet away now, lost in her thoughts, but still determined to get there. A bomber-style winter coat pulled around her, and though it covered the sheer, dark fabric on her arms, it did little for her legs, as did the fishnet stockings under her jeans, visible through the rips down the thighs and over the waistband of her pants. Apparently, though, her outfit was enough to get his attention, as if she wanted compliments from random dudes sitting around and rating people. Even if they were cute. She did her best not to immediately judge him, but anybody who did that shit out loud was probably a bit of a weirdo. Still, it didn’t stop the bright smile from appearing on her red lips, surprised that anybody━even him━thought she rated that high, even on an arbitrary scale of physical hotness.
Cassie was trying to remind herself that she was pretty━even if she didn’t feel it, or had never really believed it. She had always figured that her new-and-improved personality was the real stunner, and that guys just enjoyed any sort of attention from women. This one, though… she hadn’t even used her charms on him.
The witch slowed down just after she’d passed him, turning her head to the long-haired man on the bench. “You think I’m a nine?” She asked brightly, wandering closer━and that was when she realized. A ghost. That explained his out-loud rating system, and why nobody had bothered to hit him for it yet.
The last ghost she’d had an in-depth conversation with had been Thomas, the spirit who’d gone mad and was the whole reason she’d had to do the Harvest Ritual in the first place. This guy’s clothes were modern-looking, though. He couldn’t have been too old, which made her feel a little more safe. She’d seen a few ghosts lingering around Mystic Falls, though they were easy to spot, usually hanging over their living loved ones and lingering, sometimes shouting at them. She’d made the mistake of making eye contact once or twice, and had the spirits begging her for help, to communicate something to their living relatives. The only time Cassie had, the woman had broken down and started screaming at her, smacking her clean across the face for what she’d said━or, for the memory it brought up, Cassie presumed. Either way, she’d ignored their pleas from then on, until she could finally get herself to stop people-watching and pretend they existed altogether. Her grandma had taught her that this could be controlled, they could work with the spirits to come to a mutual agreement, and that it was important for Cassie to use her gifts to help them. But she hadn’t seen her grandma since before the Harvest Ritual━she was all on her own in this.
Despite all of her moral rules and cautions, she’d already acknowledged him. So, if he didn’t freak out too much and start verbally abusing her for help right away, then she’d stay and talk to him.
Cassie glanced from side to side━ensuring that nobody was too near or staring at her talking to what they saw as thin air━before she walked over. It wasn’t as if she cared about other people’s comfort over doing what she wanted, but protecting the secret of the supernatural had been drilled into her as a child. It was better to be safe than sorry, and sticking out like a sore thumb (more than she already did) would’ve pulled too much attention to her, and Cassie was sort of supposed to be keeping her head down.
She plopped down on the bench next to the man, still smiling before a confused look spread across her features, quirking a brow and downturning the edges of her lips only slightly. “What’s a ‘kittel’? Why don’t I wanna go into the club?” Cassie leaned in a bit, both brows raising now, her voice lowering in a mock-whisper. “Are there more ghosts in there? From all the vampires and stuff?” A small gasp, as if she was excited about it, “Is it like a ghost party?”

Some saw. The quick flicker of eyes in directions that should have revealed nothing. Not guaranteed to be something or someone there, he couldn’t always see what had drawn their attention himself, but often enough there’d be a spirit. Some thin as smoke, held here too long, flickering in and out like a bad TV signal when there was enough of a connection there to tune then in. Some as substantial as he felt himself, trapped behind that layer of spiritual glass, watching, waiting, rarely reaching through when there was enough there. Kace knew he could’ve held out a hand to any of those passing and reached right through them. Drawing that bone deep shiver out of them, the sense that someone had walked over their grave. A stupid fucking way of seeing it.
Most didn’t. Every single person just breezing past him this afternoon, unaware that he was right there. Quietly watching, judging as boredom set in. Never expecting a some today, especially not her. Pale skin revealed by the rips in her jeans that dark crosshatching of fishnets below, the bomber jacket heavier on her upper body, a tumble of blonde hair that looked like the foam that always churned up under the piers. Blue eyes, not fixing on him at first. The painted smile should’ve told him that the comments had hit but she was past him before she was slowing.
Kace straightened up slowly, curling forward, dragging his feet back into prop his elbows on his knees as she’d twisted back towards him. Was she like Kit, like the curly haired dude sharing Kit’s roommate’s bed? Able to see, maybe just enough to make him out like one of those flickering spirits, just a quick catch of the light from the corner of her eye? ”Shit.” The word fell irreverently from his lips as wandered back towards him, the question slipping from those siren red lips. Kace’s own parted slightly, his eyes lifting to remain on her face as she wandered closer. ”Don’t forget the half,” he reminded her. If personality counted, that alone would’ve pushed her to a ten for now. The first not to walk straight past, that brightness in his voice making it seem like she’d actually taken it as a compliment.
Did she even realise he was dead? Kace huffed out a laugh, shaking his head as he studied her. Maybe. Maybe not. The only ones who’d seen him fully through whatever hid him from the living had been those who were meant to be carting him off to ‘somewhere better’. Like it was some It’s a Wonderful Life shit and the afterlife was everything Hollywood wanted you to believe it was. He’d seen behind the scenes of all of that often enough to know that it was all paper thin bullshit.
Those black rimmed eyes ticked all around like she was making sure nobody saw the lunatic talking to herself. Oh she did know then, this one had a clue. Kace slid up the bench a little, eyes still on her but his arms falling away from where they’d spread over the top rail of the bench. He twisted, one knee coming up to rest on the bench. Thin threads of white stretching over the worn knee of his jeans as pressure tugged at the fabric. As worn as they were ever gonna get now. Confusion filtered across her face, one of those dark brows arcing at him. He might’ve frowned but she had him laughing instead, the sound a warm and unexpected rumble in his chest. ”Kit … Kit’s an asshole,” he told her. Kace dragged his teeth over his lower lip before he dipped his head, indicating slightly towards the club with a tip sideways. ”The big lug behind the bar in there. My brother.” The one who’d revealed a world he had no clue about to him … after. Watching Kit struggle through the change monthly, unable to do anything about it. So much more in that club.
Kace sucked in a breath, his amusement falling as he nodded. ”Plenty but … it’s not them I’m warning you about, although I should. Don’t go in there for them either. Kit … he’s just got issues with girls, they don’t even have to be a nine and a half, but that’ll catch his eye twice over.” Kace felt weary all of a sudden, his hand coming up. Fingers bracketed his mouth, dragged down over it to smooth his beard. Kit’s coping mechanism, throwing himself into every distraction possible, alcoholic and of the flesh.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Apparently, she’d misheard him. Kit, like the name Kit, was his brother. It drew all the entertainment out of her, a sudden realization that he was lingering there because they were separated. Destined to be sliced apart, that family bond screwed beyond repair. Cassie didn’t have any siblings, but her familial relationships had suffered after her death, and now she… couldn’t even go back to see them. Cassie felt for this guy, and though coming back to life was obviously possible, she knew that she and the rest of the girls were special cases. They’d been stuck inside of Davina when their throats were slit, unable to wander this far from wherever she was. He was still close enough to his brother, able to get himself outside the club and sit around on the picnic bench, rating each passerby.
She hadn’t met Kit, though she didn’t exactly make it inside the club long enough to meet anybody but Dementri.
‘... Don’t go in there for them either...’
Cassie snorted. “Too late.” She mumbled, “Also, that doesn’t really sound like an issue dudes like girls, right? Or… do you not like girls?” She asked, turning her chin up at him. Maybe it wasn’t nice to ask, but she didn’t care, and this guy probably hadn’t talked to anybody in forever (considering he was a ghost and all). Either way, she wasn’t going to judge him. “Wait, no, ‘cause you said I was a nine and a half. Was that a generic rating? ‘Cause if you didn’t actually mean it, then I’m gonna be really upset. Like, I’ll probably cry.” The widening smile on her face told a different story, though, infinitely teasing. She didn’t want to upset anybody, and she thought of herself as pretty hard to offend━hopefully, this guy hadn’t lost his sense of humour after death━she knew how easily it could happen.
“So, do you not like your brother? Like, does he have something of yours and now you’re just stuck here, or do you mean ‘he’s an asshole’ in a loving way?” She pressed for another bit of clarification, curling one leg up on the bench as she shifted to face him. The knee on the bench was sideways and pointed towards him, ankle hanging off the edge of the seat. Cassie leaned sideways into the backrest, curling her arm over the top. She was a close as she could get without touching the man, barely an inch between her leg and his.
“Okay, also, like, totally forgot to introduce myself. Sorry, not used to cute guys rating me out loud.” The witch snickered, “I’m Cassie. Your brother is Kit, and you’re...” She pointed one finger gun at him, narrowing her eyes as if she was going to guess it and pull the stranger’s name out of thin air.

Warnings about his big brother had always fallen on deaf ears. Laughed out on the beach, thrown after Kit and whatever girl he’d picked up when they staggered off into the dark. Said with all seriousness and taken just as lightly when he’d disappeared at one of Kamilla’s parties. Not an asshole, Kit never really had been with women, but not a guy destined to slip a ring on their finger either … not after Patty. Maybe the close call had left Kit skittish, maybe what had happened with him, had pushed Kit harder into that merry go round of women he’d been witnessing since Kit had fetched up here. Kace huffed out a breath as this one snorted it off. He shook his head slowly, eyes hitting the front of the club again. It wasn’t just a watch out, he won’t ask for a second date, it was a watching out for that asshole too. Whether or not he wanted it.
Kace knew she likely wouldn’t take his warning about the club anymore seriously. At her age he wouldn’t have done but he’d been a dumb shit, more concerned with getting out onto the waves and tumbling into the sand with someone, anybody afterwards. Maybe she had a little more wisdom going on behind that beaming smile and blue eyes than he’d had at her age. ”Well, shit,” he drawled. The laugh rumbled out as he brough his hand up to drag it over his face. Sandy brows rose as he glanced away from the club and towards her. ”Most do, right. Call me an equal opportunities dude. Guys, girls … whoever I’m attracted to.” Something he’d never been ashamed of. There’d been murmurs about it being inevitable when the parents had gathered together in their little B-Movie cabal. Their kids had been close enough long enough and it was Hollywood after all. Kace spread his arms on the bench again, hands raising like it was nothing.
Those wheels were spinning behind her blue eyes though. Her own figuring catching up with what he’d said, picking it apart in a way most didn’t bother to. Hollywood had always been more about beauty than brains, a compliment enough for it all to be taken at face value instead of questioned. One corner of his mouth ticked up, his chin dipping slightly. ”Never generic. A nine and a half on the Kace Clarke slidin’ scale. Honestly, I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it, especially since I had no freakin’ clue you could even hear me.” Kace narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, studying her for a moment. He still didn’t entirely know how she had. With Kit maybe it was some werewolf thing, the heightened senses letting him see through that veil just enough for him to catch a look, to hear him trying to kick his ass. He still had no explanation for the boyfriend … or the blonde.
She wasn’t gonna pull her punches. Kace looked back at the club, his teeth raking roughly over his lower lip. Wasn’t easy answering questions when you weren’t exactly sure. Fingertips tapped in a slow rhythm against the top rail of the bench as she nudged him into full on mystical shit. ”I definitely don’t hate him,” he managed with some certainty. ”Maybe I’m tethered to him cause of some shit he’s carryin’ ‘round but I always thought it was more to do with me not wantin’ to let him handle everythin’ alone, ‘specially since he was the one to…” He peeled a hand away, gestured towards his chest. ”And now I’ve made him seem like a complete asshole. Kit’s not … he’s …” Suffering. Had been before he’d come home and that one stupid slip on his part had lead to the worst of his.
Whatever he’d said hadn’t put her off at least. She’d swivelled towards him instead, bellying up like she knew him. Like he wasn’t a freaking ghost. Kace narrowed his eyes, amusement tugging at his lips as she introduced herself with a finger gun aimed at him. He lifted a hand, shot one back with a wink. ”I’m Kace. If you tell me it’s Kassie with a K, I’m gonna call a what the fuck,” he admitted on a snort. ”Woulda thought it mighta been not being used to dead cute guys rating you out loud. Not a problem with that huh?” Who knew, maybe that wasn’t the issue for Kit either. Maybe it was just the fact that his brother had put him here with that blade to the chest.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ ‘Whoever I’m attracted to.’
“Ohhhh,” Cassie let out her understanding aloud, nodding twice in quick succession. Bisexual. He didn’t really look like it━again, was she supposed to say that?━but it wasn’t like it mattered in the end. He was still a ghost, separated from her by the veil of their worlds. Probably a human one, too, so there was absolutely no chance of them making contact. He might’ve been a little too old for her, probably ready for all sorts of stuff Cassie wasn’t, though she’d gladly pretend to be. She’d never even thought about other girls that way, it’d been just boys━especially since she got back. Girls were pretty, obviously, she wasn’t freakin’ blind, and maybe there was a curiosity to see what it was like to kiss one, but she didn’t look at them the way she looked at boys. Just with Kace, even━her gaze took in his muscular arms, checking out his biceps and toned body all before she sat down. He had a nice face, too, but that was something she could pick out for women. It didn’t really count, though she supposed only cute guys had really kissable faces.
Cassie was only joking about how kissable he thought her own face was, but she was glad for his response anyway. She continued to beam at him, going all hot and pink in the cheeks as he spoke. “Good point,” She nodded firmly, “Didn’t even think about that.” What would he have to hide if he was speaking to himself? Like when you were in the bathroom all alone, singing to yourself and not caring who heard you. Cassie didn’t always get time alone in their motel room, but when she did, she was surely chatting with herself and belting out whatever song was stuck in her head.
She gladly welcomed excitement, fun being Cassie’s new motto. Despised straying from it, didn’t want to focus on the darker parts of life, though sometimes it came on all the same. She was asking a ghost about his living relatives, after all, ones who probably couldn’t chat with him like Cassie could. So, really, it was Cassie’s own fault for the way the air changed━even if he couldn’t truly affect it. She strapped in for the long haul, though, not backing out despite the sudden shift. One leg on the bench, settling in to stay awhile. Her interactions with ghosts were hardly ever this nice, and Cassie shouldn’t immediately abandon it when the going got tough.
She watched the way Kace turned back to the club to examine it like he was searching after his brother. She knew what that longing was like━to want to do things, see and chat with people, and knowing you never could. Cassie, too, was killed by somebody she trusted, though it wasn’t something she felt she had to hold over Kace. She empathized with him, a slow nod while her dark brows furrowed in concentration. Hanging off each word that came from his lips, ensuring she didn’t miss a single thing.
The young witch waited for a moment after he trailed off, not wanting to cut Kace off if he intended on finishing. He didn’t, though, and Cassie offered a sad smile. “It’s okay, if… he can do all that stuff and you still don’t think he’s an asshole, then I believe you.” She nodded, “One of the Elders of my coven killed me. She’s not an asshole, either. We were supposed to come back right away. It’s just that somebody else fucked it up. But that was… I signed up for that. You didn’t,” Cassie hadn’t known she would die, but still, it wasn’t as bad as she imagined getting stabbed by your brother would be. “Sometimes that is why ghosts stick around; unfinished business. But he probably has something of yours, too. Have you… ever tried going far?”
The conversation took a nosedive, and it seemed to continue its descent at a rapid pace. Cassie began to frown just a little deeper, trying to give it a facelift by cheerfully introducing herself. Kace, thankfully, returned her finger gun and had the witch breaking into a fit of giggles. “No, Cassie with a C. That’s a cool name, though. Kace. Like a detective’s case, except with a K? Never heard it before.” Her own wasn’t quite so unique, but that wasn’t an issue for Cassie. She was learning to appreciate what she had.
‘Woulda thought it mighta been not being used to dead cute guys rating you out loud. Not a problem with that huh?’
“Nah,” Cassie beamed, another laugh rolling from her, “Dead guys aren’t so bad when they’re not crazy. My first ever crush was a dead guy! But that… didn’t end up being so cool…” It was what lead Cassie to her death in the first place. That smile went just as quickly as it came, gaze falling to her knees. She knew she shouldn’t bother lingering on it, though. It wasn’t happy, and that’s what she wanted this conversation to be. Getting stuck as a ghost was hard enough without constant melancholy from those you could talk to.
Another grin grew on her lips, like a sunflower facing bright, yellow rays. “Just promise me you’re not gonna go all crazy on me, ‘kay, Kace? Crazy Kace.” She barked out a laugh, though quickly drew back an inch like she could stop it, shaking her head. “No. Sorry, that’s not funny. Seriously. Ghosts that get stuck for too long go all whacky. So, like, you gotta either find a way back or move on. Eventually, I mean.” Cassie propped her chin up on one hand, that arm resting on the back of the bench. “You can’t leave yet ‘cause now we’re friends.”

It was Hollywood. As long as the really weird stuff stayed under the radar nobody ever really cared what was going on there. Kamilla had raised the occasional eyebrow but unlike pop or their grandparents, she’d never cracked down. Stumbling into the house at 2am, someone new wrapped around him and laughing, padding into the kitchen the next morning, still reeking of whatever they’d drunk the night before and other things, none of it had phased her. Didn’t seem to phase the girl when he told her he liked girls just fine … girls and guys. The words probably would’ve had Kit staring at him, turning faintly green around the edges as he tried to adjust that mental image of his little brother that had clung on after his death. Still the brother he knew, but more.
Kace let out a humming sound, one brow remaining hitched as he saw her nod in response. Yeah, ohhhh. Raking his teeth over his lower lip he glanced at the club. That had been one conversation he’d never had with Kit, never felt like he’d needed to. ”Surprised?” he asked, a faint drawl to his voice. He dropped his hands to the back of the bench, thumbs tapping out a quiet rhythm against that top rail. Wasn’t like it really mattered now. He’d damned himself to a life between whatever had been waiting for him and before. You didn’t get conjugal visits here, not even from those who could see you. Those who still couldn’t touch. Not physically at least.
Reaching beyond that veil in a way he had the girl beaming out a grin, her cheeks glowing in a way that was kinda adorable and kinda telling when it came to it. It had him thinking maybe it wasn’t something she’d heard too much, that experience he’d slipped into mid-teens still lingering somewhere beyond however old she was. Kace clucked his tongue, a chuckle ringing out that was just a little weary. ”It’s a good thing not everybody can … hear, ya know … some of the shit that spews out …” Like the conversation he’d had with Kit in Frank’s kitchen. The lumps he’d taken out of his brother trying to get him to just step back from that edge. Pushing too far, the world around him finally shuddering like the sobs that had run through Kit as he’d clung onto the sink.
Cassie had turned into him, one leg on the bench, not ready to run or wrap this ego fluffing up too quick. Brooding over Kit he’d looked away, blue eyes narrowing as he’d studied the frontage like somehow suddenly Kit would be there, eyes fixed on him again, struck with that sudden awareness that his brother wasn’t entirely gone. His fingers took up the rhythm his thumbs had been tapping out before, nails scraping lightly at the wood. Teeth sank into his lower lip as he let the hand he’d gestured with fall into his lap, a huff of humour working its way past his teeth. ”He’s my brother,” he echoed hoarsely, like that was going to explain his forgiveness. Blonde brothers knotted as he glanced over, the smile that tugged at his tight. ”Not sure I believe you,” Kace told her. ”Sounds pretty assholey to me, whether or not they were bringing you back. Why kill a kid? Even one who signed up for it.” He had, he realised, letting out a sigh. Knowing what Kit was going through, he’d taken him in regardless. He was his brother, it was what you did and in that you signed up for the worst along with the best.
Like a marriage, you made a promise and in telling the reaper to shove his offer, he’d made his. Kace shrugged, unsure what agonising fucking reminder of him Kit would’ve taken. Jewellery, his board, that stupid fucking ashtray he’d made in fifth grade that Kit had kept despite it looking like a squashed turd. He shook his head, slumping back on the bench. ”Just been right there. The police station, the court, jail, here.” Watching Kit slip further and further over that edge with every single day. Watching Frank trying to keep a hand on his wrist to hold him up even when his own grip had gotten slippery when his brother had died.
With the story of his own death … and hers … they’d turned it fucking mournful until introductions were made. Those dark brows had drawn together until he finger gunned right back at her and found humour in the ridiculous serendipity of the situation. Woulda been his luck if she had been Kassie with a K. Kace allowed his eyes to slip shut for a minute as he let a laugh roll out. ”Right. Who knows where the hell Kamilla dragged it up from. Kamilla and Kurt, Kit, Kandice and Kace. Practically the fucking Kardashians.” Only way further down the scale of Hollywood royalty. When the Kardashians had hit big he imagined the fit woulda been head all the way down in San Diego, Kamilla’s shriek still one of the wonders of the B-movie world.
Had she even mourned the loss of her son? Given two shits that her eldest had just about killed himself with that one wound? Kandice had. His sister’s voice through the phone as Kit had spoken to her in that broken way had torn at his own gut. Something he didn’t want to think about now that they’d got whatever this ghost confessional was back onto a lighter note. ”I’ll that that as a compliment,” Kace promised. Another of those low hums, a twist of his head and his lips with amusement. ”At least tell me he was a hot dead guy,” he quipped before his lips pressed together. Still a little close to the knuckle maybe, for him at least.
Both hands rose as that bright grin demanded a promise from him. Close to the knuckle but not to the one that said he was gonna be one of those angry ghosts that had haunted Hollywood’s b-movies badly enough to leave the audiences groaning and not in a good way. ”Promise,” he swore, dropping a hand to thump against his chest. It peeled away as Kace frowned at her, hovered an inch from her. He’d seen the way the bite of cold he brought in had people cringing away from him. ”No apology.” No room for argument in it but his voice trailed off again. The corner of his mouth twitched as that hand was retracted, thumped against his chest. ”Long as Kit’s here…” Kace tipped his chin towards the Club in explanation. ”I’m here. You … you can come back though.” It hadn’t struck him when she said she’d been killed earlier. Killed and yet back, sitting there solid and whole … but somehow still tethered enough to see. ”How’d you do it?” Some part of him suddenly started radiating with hope at the same time that voice that had cursed Kit for his screw up tried to throw a damper on it. She was back, didn’t mean his worthless ass was gonna be pulled back from this limbo.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ Was she surprised? Yeah, a little bit. He wasn’t as flamboyant as she expected, and while that might’ve been a thought that wasn’t so progressive, it was just built-in. But that’s why people always said all the hot ones were gay, didn’t they? Except… Kace wasn’t fully on the other team, so she could ogle all she wanted (not that him being gay would stop her). She only shrugged and nodded, not wanting to drag down the conversation, though it got there anyway. Death. Always a sucky thing to talk about, especially with someone who was still dead. Though, that dark cloud loomed more after Cassie had come back. It stuck to her and didn’t let go.
‘Not sure I believe you, Sounds pretty assholey to me, whether or not they were bringing you back. Why kill a kid? Even one who signed up for it.’
Cassie couldn’t help but feel a little defensive over it. Yeah, it was shitty, they didn’t know they were going to die, but it was Davina who really screwed it up for them. Kace didn’t have the full story, and so he couldn’t make a clear judgement━that’s how she rationalized it, anyway. “Yeah, well, it’s tradition. Like I said, we were supposed to come back right away. It was kind of an honour. Like, I was happy to be picked.” Cassie didn’t even believe herself while she said it. She was frowning, and her voice was weak. She felt like an awkward little girl trying to convince him. Speaking of, “And I’m not a kid.” Though uttering the words like one didn’t help her case.
Cassie shifted her bent leg to stuff it through the hole between the back piece and seating part, leaving her to straddle the bench and face Kace wholly, listening intently while he talked about his brother. She nodded along, leaning forward to press her hands to the wood, seemingly restless every time she shifted. Cassie was laughing by the time they threw names back and forth, though, leaning back a bit to raise her brows at him. “Kamilla and Kurt? Are they your parents? Did she specifically find a dude with a K-name to do that with?” Cassie teased, nearly swinging her leg over to bump his, though she stopped herself before the action was carried out. It sucked not being able to interact with things in the regular world, she knew the feeling firsthand, though she’d always have her magic to topple stuff over if she needed attention.
“Yeah, he was cute. Super old, though. Not as cute as other ghosts I’ve met.” Cassie sent a wink his way, though she was blushing hard, a quiet giggle trailing after her laugh. She liked being honest with guys, though it didn’t happen easily.
Thankfully, she wasn’t the only one almost screwing up by breaking that barrier. Cassie frowned as Kace stopped just short of touching her, though she didn’t move away, willing to take on the shiver if he wanted to. She wished it didn’t have to be this way, though if being a ghost was the same as being alive, then… nothing would really matter anymore. It was part of the balance.
A balance that could be broken. She’d come back, and while that could’ve been a witch-specific thing, Cassie knew she had to teeter between not making him depressed and not giving him too much hope.
“Ummmm…” Cassie started with a frown, trying to think about it. “Well━okay, it’s different ‘cause, like, when we died, each of us got put into the next girl. And the last girl didn’t die, so when she left, we were kinda… inside her? We were still dead, still technically ghosts I guess, but we just had to get pulled out of her and put in our old bodies. She got some really old, really powerful warlock to do it. I can try to help you find one if you want, but I can’t make any promises.” She probably shouldn’t have said it, shouldn’t have made a promise like that (even if she said it wasn’t one), but Cassie couldn’t help it━Kace was her new friend, and she wanted to see him reunited with his family in a way she couldn’t be. She gave him a sad smile then but tipped her head an inch to the side like a puppy, hoping he wouldn’t get too upset━not like Thomas.

There’d always been that divide between Cali and Texas. The regiment of home, as it’d been then, the wild of LA under Kamilla’s lack of watch. What you’d get away with in one place definitely not what you would in the other. Kamilla didn’t give a shit if they trailed in at 3am as fourteen year olds, as long as nobody was bought home by the cops or got caught doing anything that would bring shame on her by the few paparazzi who actually knew who the fuck she was. That lack of attention didn’t mean there wasn’t some love there between her and her kids, or between her and their dad but Kamilla had always just loved herself more than anybody else. The queen bee with her little hangers on crowding around her. Shit, she’d have done anything to get herself ahead but even Kamilla wouldn’t have been willing to kill one of her own kids for a little power boost.
If she had she might’ve monopolised more on his death than she had done and the notoriety that would’ve come with the fucked up modern day Cain and Abel shit that had gone on with her own sons. The grief had been quiet at first though, a sucking well at the centre of his family that had blown them all apart, away from each other afterwards. In the end Kamilla had turned it around, turned that grief outwards for interviews and another spin in the spotlight. He was that vacuum in the middle of it all though. Had this kid become the vacuum in the middle of her family’s lives too? The thought that she hadn’t was fucking depressing.
Kace shook his head, the smile that had appeared disappearing just as fast. No matter how many arguments Cassie threw at it or how his labelling of it made her frown, he couldn’t get past the fact that they’d been killing their kids. ”Still sounds pretty fucked up to me. Coming back right away or not. This ain’t fun.” She’d obviously learned it, wherever the hell she’d gone when she’d died. It wouldn’t have been a fucking holiday. Blue eyes settled on her, watching the play of emotion over her face, then flicked away as she had him huffing out something closer to amusement again. ”Close enough then. Now … I guess not.” Although he was wiling to bet she wasn’t out of her teens yet.
At her age he’d felt like he was pretty much invincible, now … now he was just tired, being beyond not doing a damn thing to make him feel less drained watching Kit slowly fade away. Kace stared up at the sky, eyes only flicking back and forth to her rarely as he laced his hands together on top of his head. He hadn’t seen his parents since before … Kandice had cut herself off. It’d just been him and Kit, tied together in all of this, maybe forever now. Or at least until he lost his shit. ”Uh huh.” A slow bob of his head. ”I doubt she even knew his name the first time she hooked up, but honestly, I wouldn’t put it past her. Always was all about her, even after she had her whoopsy and got knocked up with Kit.” There was a thin thread of amusement there but coated with a weariness. He’d never been able to figure out why they’d done it twice more, like kids were ever band aids.
He wasn’t anything but a remnant now, lingering here to torture his brother and amuse a girl for an afternoon. Maybe this one was his band aid, for a minute at least. Kace’s grin grew, appreciation that would’ve spilled over into a clap of his hand onto whatever part of her was within reach rolling through. ”Cute and not super old, I’ll take that.” Wasn’t like he had compliments spilling his way these days, the only people who’d ever given enough of a shit to give them beyond him now.
Cassie was right there though, inches away and it could’ve been miles judging by that icy cold that kept the two of them apart. That constant aching reminder that he wasn’t one of them anymore. The more he felt it, the more he could feel something starting to slip away. The part of him that had tried to make Kit crack shining through more and more.
Kace left his hand there on the bench as she spoke. Brows knotted, his fingers just an inch from her as she went back into that world of twisted death shit in her world. His eyes flicked up from where his hand sat to her face. ”You were all just kinda floating around in her head? Man…” He let out a long breath at that. Somehow it sounded better and worse than where he was stuck. The same three people day in, day out, no chance to escape for even five minutes if you wanted to. She had someone though, or at least the other witch did, to pull her out.
Kace sat up on the bench, a greasy sort of hope that left him feeling kinda sick in the pit of his stomach. ”Really? Shit. Yes! I mean … if there’s a chance …” Her smile was sad but he was still leeching hope from it, feeling it shine just a little brighter as he saw Kit tumble back out of the door of the club, no girl, just him rushing away in that dusky light. ”I’ve gotta go but if you do … I’ll be back here OK … stop by sometime even if you don’t.” His throat was thick as he went to back up, a nod all he was gonna mange without embarrassing the fuck out of himself in front of some kid.
