One thing Claire had learned was that each shift was different while working in Mystic Falls and she never knew what the day was going to hold. There were some shifts that were challenges in themselves and there were others that were downright dull but having Ares there by her side always made it that much more interesting. They had fun while they were patrolling the town together and she knew that she wouldn’t want to have it any other way. They had become friends during their time going through the police academy together but then they had gone their separate ways. He was the first person that she had come across for quite some time that she felt that she could truly trust and it helped knowing that she didn’t need to keep any secrets from him. He knew that she was a vampire and she knew that he was a warlock and even though she knew that they probably shouldn’t get along they had quickly realised that they would have each other’s backs no matter what. For Claire it had been a relief to know that there was someone that she could be herself with because there were times when keeping the fact that she was a vampire a secret could become quite taxing. She knew that it was necessary because if it became public knowledge that she was a vampire then she would be sure to bring every hunter in town down on herself in an instant and that was the last thing she wanted. She was used to moving around every few years and never staying in one place for too long but Mystic Falls was different. There were plenty of supernaturals around town and with Stefan, Damon and Ares around she knew that there wasn’t anywhere else that she would rather be. She had been on her own for such a long time so the truth was that she had forgotten what it was like to have people around that she cared about and who cared about her in return and she knew that she didn’t want to give that up now that she finally had them all back in her life. There had been a few interesting calls that day but it had to be said that watching Ares trying to get Fluffy out of the tree was definitely the most amusing call they’d had. She knew how embarrassed he had to be about being bested by a cat but Claire just couldn’t resist teasing him about it nonetheless. They were more than just partners, they were friends as well and they looked out for each other while they were working and outside of work as well. The two of them spent a lot of time together but that wasn’t something that she regretted one bit. “If you say so,” Claire grinned as Ares said that he didn’t want any more surprises that day. “You know me too well,” she laughed. “Besides, you tease me just as much so I have to use whatever ammo I can get my hands on.” They looked out for each other while they were working but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t still have some fun at the same time and the banter that came while they were driving around town together was one of her favourite parts of the job. “That’s true,” she nodded as Ares said that Remi wasn’t the kind of person to buy everything she saw. Something actually told Claire that Remi wouldn’t buy much at all so she knew that it wouldn’t be too bad for Ares if he did get dragged along. “That’s a lot better than the last time I was there with you,” Claire admitted. The last time there had been a lot more breakages than that so it was progress at least. “I think you’re right, she does like having you there,” she added, certain that Olivia would have said something if she didn’t. Focusing on the road ahead of them, Claire couldn’t help but laugh at the name that Ares used for Damon. “Are you sure you really want to hear about that?” she asked before glancing across at him and realising that he was being serious. “To be honest I have no idea. We both said a lot of things while he was suffering from the hybrid bite and I thought that something might come of it but he hasn’t mentioned it since so I guess he’s taken me up on my offer of letting him forget all about it,” she shrugged. She would be lying if she said that it didn’t hurt but Damon had been through a lot so if he needed a friend instead of anything else then she knew that she would have to respect that. ARES PATERA

His entire life Eros had been at his side. At school they’d tried to keep the two of them separated to encourage them to socialize with other kids but they’d always stuck tight. Sure, there’d been times when they’d argued but no matter how many cross words flew between them they were brothers, to lean on, to stand shoulder to shoulder with, to take on the world besides. They’d do that too. Signing up for the marines on the same day, ending up in the same unit, knowing the other was always there in battle. Ares guessed he could’ve stayed enlisted even when Eros had decided for sure he was ready to stand down and head to medical school, it wouldn’t have been the same though. A world away from his brother? Naw. It probably would’ve killed both of them. Mystic Falls had been far enough from Miami at the start. Making the move here, being back in each other’s near orbits at least had felt better. Claire being here, that was a bonus. If there was anybody other than Eros he wanted at his side that way it was her. They might not’ve looked like a match made in heaven at the academy but their friendship had driven them both on to graduation then and it worked here. She kept him from letting his asshole side take over, he … kept her entertained. It might not’ve seemed like it at times but he tried to be a decent friend … and you know what … most of the time he was. On the job and off of it Ares knew he was dependable, generous, fiercely loyal and it all came with a decent dose of humour. What else could you possibly want?
Damon would probably say everything but him. Claire’s friend, associate … boyfriend on the way? … had never pulled any punches when it came to the two of them. They’d circled, both a little territorial over the thought of the other hurting her. Chances were, if it was gonna happen, it absolutely wasn’t going to be him. Both Ares’ hands came up now as she continued to tease him. ”I’m definitely saying so,” he stated. Fluffy had been more than enough. Ares pooched his lower lip out as he dropped them away from his face. ”Since when do I tease?” he asked, putting a little hurt in his voice before his lips went from pout to little boy smirk in a heartbeat. On a daily basis but it was always in the spirit of friendship, no real mean bone in his body. That was his problem he guessed, that grumpy crust on the surface, marshmallow underneath when people broke through it. Soft enough that he melted just a little over the talk of Remi. Dark brows rose as he glanced at her. ”I could always stop helping out and just take up space at the bar…” Which he wouldn’t do, even if it meant saving the glasses. He’d never been the type not to help when it was needed. Ares’ mouth curled faintly. He hadn’t expected the place to feel so much like home after he’d moved here, hadn’t expected Remi to show up either, although whether she’d be able to stay was still a big question mark hanging over their heads. If she did head back out, that would leave him playing third wheel more of the time, with a guy who still drove him nuts. Ares shrugged, leaning back against the passenger window as he studied Claire. ”Absolutely. I need to make sure my partner’s happy and since he’s a pivotal part of that … talk.” He raised his hand and wiggled his fingers in encouragement. ”If he has done then he’s an idiot. He hasn’t said one word about it yet? No, hey let’s just get dinner sometime?” He would’ve said maybe the guy was subtle, too subtle for Claire to see the change in but this was Damon Salvatore they were talking about.

Claire had felt like she was lost before she made her way to Mystic Falls. She had been drifting through life for such a long time without any purpose whatsoever and she had tried to convince herself that she was fine with that but if she was honest she had missed having something to live for. She and Ares had become friends while they were going through the police academy together and he had become one of the few people that she could count on. She hadn’t realised that she had needed someone like that in her life until she had found it and leaving that behind when she had decided to make her way to Mystic Falls had been difficult but it had felt like something she’d needed to do. Finding out that Ares had moved there too was definitely a bonus to say the least and she had found herself enjoying her job ever since then. It was good having another person aside from the Salvatore brothers who had her back and she couldn’t deny that she had missed it. She had spent most of her time on her own ever since she’d had to leave her family behind her and she had tried to convince herself that she was fine on her own but now things were completely different. She had people around that she cared about and they made being in town worth it so she wanted to make the most of it for as long as she could. She knew that eventually she would have to move on the same way that she always did, after all she was only ever able to stay in one place for so long before people started to notice that she wasn’t aging and when that happened it was always better to move on as quickly as possible rather than risk drawing attention to herself. For the first time she felt like she might have found somewhere different and even though being in Mystic Falls was a risky move it was worth it. Having Ares and Damon at loggerheads all the time was something that Claire knew that she definitely could have done without but she knew that they both had good intentions. It was clear to her that they both cared about her and they both wanted to protect her but they didn’t seem to realise that she was capable of looking after herself or that she had been doing it for a long time before they both came along. She was grateful that they cared about her but there were times when the protectiveness got a little too much and it was something that she always tried to diffuse when she could. She cared about them both and she knew that they were more alike than they cared to admit but if she was honest that was what made her life so interesting. As Ares asked when he teased, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “On a daily basis,” she grinned. It was one of the things that made their time together so much fun but if she was honest she wouldn’t have it any other way. She’d had a couple of different partners since she and Ares had parted ways but none of them were like him and she had often found her time without him too be quite dull so she was glad that they had ended up in town together again. “I’m sure Olivia would probably prefer that, it would stop her having to make sure that she has an endless supply of glasses behind the bar,” she shrugged. She knew that Ares wouldn’t do that though, it was like he was hardwired to try and help people and that was something that she could definitely understand. Claire knew that she could talk to Ares about anything but when it came to her love life, or rather her lack thereof, she couldn’t deny that it was a little awkward. He seemed to genuinely want to know, though, and he talked to her about Remi so she knew that it wouldn’t be fair to keep him in the dark about whatever was or wasn’t going on between her and Damon. “Nope, nothing. I know I could bring it up but he was dying when he said the things he did so I’d feel like I was taking advantage of that,” she sighed as she turned a corner that would lead them back to the station. “He seems to want to forgot about it so I guess it’s time I did too. I need to try to move on.” Damon was the only guy that she’d had feelings for since she’d left her husband and children behind so she knew that it wasn’t going to be that easy but she had to at least try since it was clear to her that Damon wasn’t interested in anything happening between them after all. Life could’ve fallen apart after he’d left the service. It happened to good men and women every day. They tried to adjust to a life outside of the military and ended up with no support network, no family, no friends, no job, because there were far too many who put those who served their country on the far side of some invisible line. Some ended up on the streets, mental health that was already damaged by their service slowly growing worse without the care they should’ve received. Ares had known he wouldn’t end up there, not with his family always prepared to be there for him, but he could’ve started down a slippery slope regardless of all the help in the world. His world had changed when he’d been discharged from the Marines, twisting beyond all that he recognised. Claire had been one of those there to cement his new normal. She’d filled in his brother’s big footsteps without a single misstep. He’d needed it too. Someone to keep him out of trouble, to pull his head out of his ass when necessary. His partner was a saint to put up with him and for that he was going to be eternally grateful, even if it meant putting up with Damon.
Goddess, with that jackass he couldn’t keep the teasing at bay. That made his question to Claire a lie of sorts of course. Did he tease? In his own tinder dry way, OK, he did it. It didn’t mean he’d hold his hands up and admit it though, Officer Patera was above that sort of thing, just as Gunnery Sergeant Patera had been. A line drawn on the job that he’d happily jig over when it suited him. Ares’ smirk pulled at his lips as the hurt fell away from his expression. ”Weekly, maybe,” he admitted. ”The rest of the time I’m just full on Oscar the Grouch.” With some. It was a holdover from the uniform, from being the hard ass who pushed to get everybody through everything safely. How had one of his recruits once put it? He was married to his rifle? Maybe in a long term committed relationship with his weapon but what he had here in Mystic Falls proved there was far more to his life than that. Ares made a low sound in his throat, that lip pooching out again as he glanced out the window of the car and shook his head. ”And I thought there might’ve been a bit of gratitude about me helping out.” He clucked his tongue and sighed. As a head breaker for the troublemakers perhaps. Nothing was ever going to make him a decent bartender.
He’d never make a decent agony aunt either but he liked to think he had decent shoulders for people to lean on. The last few weeks he’d been Remi’s sounding board about whether or not to turn this break from the Navy into something permanent. It sat badly in the pit of his stomach but there was no way he’d ever force her hand on staying here and putting down roots with him. For the moment Claire didn’t have that problem with Damon but what had happened with Niklaus Mikaelson and the bite could stop things before they’d really gotten going for his partner. Ares shook his head, muscles flexing in his jaw. ”If you were pushing for something you would’ve gone for it before he got the cure. You gave him the space to really make up his mind. If he hasn’t done it by now then he’s an idiot.” He could say that with all certainty. The asshole. Sighing, Ares reached out and slugged his partner’s arm feather lightly. ”You want me to kick his ass? Sounds like he’s deserving it for passing up the best thing he’s ever gonna find.” He was just as certain about that. His partner was a great person and surely Damon would see it if he ever pulled his head out of his ass.

Claire had moved around a lot over the years but it had to be said that Mystic Falls was the place that meant the most to her. She hadn’t thought that she would end up finding half as much as she had done while she was there, she hadn’t even wanted to run into Stefan or Damon at first but now it was one of the best things that had happened to her for a long time. Before she moved to Mystic Falls her life had been a pretty lonely one, she and Ares had become friends while they were going through the police academy together but the truth was that she had always felt like that was going to be taken away at any minute. They had eventually ended up going their separate ways before bumping into each other again in Mystic Falls and ever since then working together had been one of the easiest things in the world. They had always made a good team and that hadn’t changed. They were more than just partners, they were friends and that was something that she had ended up missing after they had parted ways. They had both always had the problem of not knowing who they could trust with their secrets but they could trust each other and it definitely made their shifts together interesting to say the least. Not to mention with the way that they knew each other they couldn’t stop teasing each other as well and Ares definitely gave her plenty of ammunition to do that. “You got that right,” Claire laughed as Ares said that he was Oscar the Grouch most of the time. “Luckily I get to see a different side of you,” she added with a grin. She had known Ares long enough now to know how to get through to him when he was in one of his moods and it certainly made things that much easier. She knew that he had been through a lot, after all he had been in the army before he had ended up becoming a cop, and there were times when he wasn’t in a particularly good mood but it was something that she had grown used to. As Ares spoke again, Claire couldn’t help but smile. “I’m sure she was grateful,” she said as she reached over and patted his arm gently. Olivia had needed the help and Ares had stepped in like the good guy he was but she still hadn’t been able to resist the urge to tease him nonetheless. As talk turned to Damon, Claire couldn’t deny that she felt a little bad about it. She knew that Ares didn’t deserve to have to listen to her talking about her pathetic love life but he had asked and she had known that there wasn’t any point in lying to him because he would have been able to see right through it anyway. “Maybe. I haven’t been out with anyone since I had to leave my husband and kids behind so perhaps this is a sign that I shouldn’t be trying to move on,” she shrugged. Not a day went by when she didn’t feel guilty about leaving them behind but she had known that staying with them just wasn’t an option. It would have put a target on their backs and she had known that they had deserved so much better than that. Instead she had compelled them into believing that she was dead and moving on with their lives and she liked to think that their lives had been happy ones in the end. As Ares spoke again, Claire couldn’t help but laugh. “Thanks but no, he doesn’t deserve that. If he isn’t interested then I can’t hold that against him,” she said as she pulled the car into the parking lot. “Are you still up for that drink?”ARES PATERA

Not many had been prepared to work with him at the academy. They saw that drive inside of him, that rashness that could drive him from perfectly civil to mule stubborn in minutes and they held up the hands. That was the sort of hot head that could get you into trouble on the job or drag you down if things went wrong. Claire hadn’t backed out of it, she’d had a drive inside of her too and in a way she’d tempered him. Just like Eros before her. He needed that cooler head beside him on the job because unchecked he’d give it a thousand percent, not caring that it would strip away his patience or ratchet the situation up another level. He’d always just found it impossible to flip that switch off himself but Ares had trusted even then that Claire would make sure he did.
She’d seen that side of him, him at his hot head best, and every other side of him since. Partners. Friends. His work wife in a way, although he had a feeling that Damon would argue fang and nail over that description. He winged a brow at her now, a smirk tugging at his lips. ”Luckily? Or you would’ve canned my ass back at the academy.” Ares sucked in a breath, let it out in a dramatic sigh. ”I would’ve got myself in a hell of a lot more trouble if you had.” He’d have been at a desk in the station now, filling in the report on just how a bullet from his weapon had ended up knocking the cat out of the tree. A black mark on his file that he’d have hated the minute he cooled off.
Ares made a low sound in his throat as Clare reassured him that even Olivia would’ve been grateful for his help. He tried. In uniform, out there in the world. Try often being the operative word. At least he’d offered to pay for the glasses he’d destroyed, hadn’t put up much of a fuss when Olivia had chivvied him out from behind the bar. ”Maybe,” he agreed, his mouth curling at one corner as his partner patted his arm. ”She’ll be more grateful for me staying on the other side of the bar tonight.” In his rightful place.
Without Remi there it had been different though. He knew what it was like to be cut off from the person you loved. Love could only stretch so far though, growing thin across time and continents. Ares bobbed his head slowly as Claire admitted there hadn’t been anybody since she’d had to leave her husband and kids behind. Then he was shooting her a look. ”Oh hell no. Claire, it’s been long enough. Too long to be alone. Don’t see this as a sign to make that longer.” Damn he was gonna have to kick Salvatore’s ass after all. She deserved more after all that time of second guessing what she’d done in keeping her family safe. He swallowed hard, shaking his head until he had her laughing again. ”You sure? I’m pretty sure I could manage it, if I had a surprise start…” Between his power and what Damon was it would probably be a closer fight than either would admit. ”I can,” he said simply as he began to unbuckle his seatbelt. ”Definitely. See you back here in about fifteen minutes? I need to get the cat fur off…” Get out of the damn uniform too and blur the cat’s mean little face in his memory with a beer or two.

Running into Ares in Mystic Falls had seemed too good to be true to begin with. They had made it through the police training academy together and even though Ares was a warlock and she was a vampire, the two of them had still struck up a real friendship. Now he was one of the people that Claire trusted the most in the world and it was that much easier knowing that he was the one out there who had her back every day. She hadn’t been very good at letting people get too close to her after she completed the transition but Ares had managed to break through the walls that she had built to protect herself and she was glad that he had done. He had helped her start coming out of her shell more and he was always there with words of encouragement when she needed them. She always tried to do the same for him when she could as well and she knew deep down that that was probably why they got along so well. They had both been through a lot but they were fighters and they didn’t have any secrets from each other so she was glad that things had worked out the way they had done. “Of course I would have done,” Claire laughed, unable to resist teasing him. She had seen the way that Ares had struggled around other people and in a way he had reminded her of herself. She had a feeling that that was probably why they had been drawn together in the end, she had ended up being the only person who would work with him while they were going through the academy but he had quickly become someone that she could count on and she was glad that she had stuck it out. “You’re lucky that I’ll always be here to keep you in check,” Claire said, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. She knew that he could still be a hothead at times but he was doing much better than he had been in the academy and he was trying. Claire knew that there were times like today with the cat when things could have easily escalated because Ares lost his temper but he was doing much better at reigning himself in and when he wasn’t able to do so then she was on hand to make sure that he didn’t do something that he would regret later. “You’re probably right,” she grinned as Ares said that Olivia would probably be more grateful for him staying on the other side of the bar. His heart was always in the right place but Ares working behind the bar was a recipe for disaster so she knew that it was for the best even if there were nights when she was pretty sure that Olivia was grateful for whatever help she could get. With everything that was going on right now it was easy for Claire to fall back into old habits of thinking that she didn’t deserve to be happy. The guilt of having to leave her husband and children behind was something that she still carried with her to this day and while she knew that she had done what was right for them she still felt bad about it. She had broken her promise that she would always be there to look after them just like she had broken her promise to look after her sister and a part of her felt like perhaps this was her punishment for it. “Being alone isn’t so bad,” she shrugged even though deep down she knew that Ares was right. She had punished herself for long enough already by pushing everyone away and she knew that she shouldn’t go back to doing that now when she had finally started to open up to people again but it wasn’t easy. She had honestly thought that perhaps she and Damon would be able to explore what was really there between them at last but he seemed to want to forget what had been said between them and she knew that she needed to respect that. “I’m sure,” she said, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at her partner. “I know you could take him if you get angry but I’ll always care about him so I don’t want you fighting.” No matter what happened she was always going to be Damon’s friend so she knew that the last thing she needed was for two of the most important people in her life to be at each other’s throats. As Ares said that he could hold it against Damon if he wasn’t interested, Claire reached over and gave his arm a grateful squeeze. “I’m lucky to have you as my partner,” she said sincerely. He had her back both while they were working and while they were off the clock and she knew that she couldn’t ask for a better friend. “You got it,” she nodded as she climbed out of the car before rolling her eyes playfully as Ares said that he needed to get the car fur off. Heading to the locker room, Claire got changed and emerged about fifteen minutes later. “Are you ready to go?” she asked as she saw Ares approach. ARES PATERA

It had taken a while to stop looking for Ares over his shoulder, even after he’d come to Mystic Falls. His brother was closer to him here than he’d been at any point since they’d both given up their commissions but he wasn’t there. He could feel it like a missing limb, only functioning because he could trust Claire to be that replacement for him. Different in so many ways but as she teased him over the academy he could practically hear Eros’ voice coming out of her mouth. The laugh that had him reaching out to slug a hand gently against her bicep. Both of them devilling him to the point where those hazel eyes would go flinty and mulish.
Now they softened, like a summer sky taking on that achingly blue edge as the clouds scudded away. Ares’ throat got tight in a way it rarely would with anybody else, that fist curling back towards himself to thud against his own chest. Acknowledgement in the move as those curled fingers rapped over his heart. ”I don’t know if I’d call it lucky…” he drawled but that grin was already breaking back through. Yeah, he knew he was, but he wasn’t gonna admit it too easy and out himself as a guy who actually had a heart instead of the lump of coal he professed to have beneath his ribs. Olivia had seen it too, seeing his attempts at helping out as a demonstration of that heart of gold … and fumbling hands. Now all Claire was getting to see was his ego though, that grin he’d shot her broadening. ”I’ll stay planted.” Unless Damon showed up, if he was there all bets were off.
The vampire was what his partner needed maybe – someone to be there for her when he couldn’t be – but honestly, did it have to be him? The guy was a walking ego, tossing the same accusation back at him. Ares grunted, shoulders shrugging against the hold of the seatbelt. ”Maybe if your choices are Salvatore or alone being alone don’t look so bad,” he mused. Maybe on the sliding scale of things Salvatore wasn’t quite bottom but he wasn’t about to tell the guy that. Not when Claire was caught between them. Ares still postured, the threat of what he could do to Damon if he hurt Claire thrown out there, hanging in the air while Claire smiled at him. He puffed his cheeks out as she soothed his ego and warned him at the same time, let that air out in a sigh. ”For you I keep my hands … and magic off … but he hurts you all bets are off.” There was a definite promise to the words. He was protective, and that ran both ways. Ares grinned slowly, covering Claire’s hand again, squeezing in turn.
If they were the sort of partners who couldn’t stand each other they wouldn’t have arranged to meet back here in minutes for that drink. Ares swaggered away, boiled away the shift and that pervasive smell of cat in a hot shower. His uniform was shoved in his gym bag to possibly be burned afterwards – just to remove all trace of that beast. He tossed his bag over his shoulder, headed out of the locker room to find his partner already waiting in the hallway. That was a first, most women he knew, including Clio, would have been in there an hour. He whistled, the corner of his mouth curling as he threw an arm around her shoulders. ”I was born ready. Let’s go make Olivia’s night. You wanna drive again or can I …” Ares held his hand up, shook his fingers in the air like he was shaking a bunch of keys.
