Ares had never considered himself an animal lover at all but right now, given the choice he didn’t would have said he was a dog man. Cats were … well, they were assholes. The internet was full of video proof of that – they refused to follow orders, did what they wanted, when they wanted, accepted affection on their terms only, destroyed stuff, and as he’d just discovered, would genuinely ruin your whole freaking day. His opinion on the grey cat had been pretty damn neutral when they’d responded to probably the most clichéd call he’d ever been out since he’d first put on the uniform but within minutes things had started to turn bad. An attempt to scramble up the lower branches towards the cat had been successful enough, Ares had found himself halfway up the tree while his partner and what felt like half the neighbourhood watched the cat scramble higher with each inch he rose. The thing hissed at him again now, teeth bared, one paw cocked in his direction with the claws that had already swiped across the back of the hand he’d tried to grab it with. Ares bared his teeth back. Hopefully the owner on the ground would take it as a smile instead of the suppressed growl it was. ”I don’t want to be here anymore than you do buddy,” Ares grumbled as he inched towards the animal again. ”I’m not the one who got myself up here and couldn’t get down. That’s all on you so play nice and come here…” Stretching out a hand, Ares tried to make a grab for the cat’s middle but it was on the move, hissing again as it tried for his face this time.
The blood thirsty little psychopath. Eros would’ve told him the reason he and the cat weren’t getting on was because they were so similar in temperament but he’d never been like this. He’d have accepted the rescue with a smile and a thank you because he knew when to be grateful. Ares retreated back a foot, his hazel eyes still locked on the animal as it howled plaintively down at its owner. Sweet as pie for the one who provided dinner every night but salty as hell for the guy ruining a uniform to try and rescue it. For a moment he wondered whether he’d get away with a spell, a simple charm that would lull the animal into a more docile state. A dozen feet up the tree there was a chance those below wouldn’t hear but all eyes were on him and had been since he and Claire had arrived in the patrol car. It’d seem hinky, even in Mystic Falls if the cat was suddenly asleep. This was going to have to be done the hard way. Ares sucked in a breath as the cat hissed menacingly at him again. Shifting back he dropped his gaze to look at his partner. ”Do you think I’m gonna be able to get away with shooting Fluffy here?” he asked, keeping his voice low. Still the owner heard it, if her sudden gasp was anything to go by. ”I’m kidding, I’ll get him down without him getting hurt, I promise.” He continued to eye his partner though, hoping she’d come up with a suggestion for how they were going to do this without bloodshed before their shift ended.

There were plenty of people in Mystic Falls who would probably think that she was crazy for joining the town’s police force given everything that had happened in the town over the last couple of years but the truth was that Claire wanted to help people and this was the best way she knew how. She had trained at the Police Academy a couple of times over the years but this time it had been a while since her last visit. Moving around a lot meant that she didn’t tend to get too attached to people and the truth was that more often than not she kept to herself as much as she could but as it happened she was now partnered with someone she knew pretty well. She and Ares had gone through the Academy at the same time and they had helped each other through it. Claire had sometimes found it difficult keeping what she was from those around her but having Ares around had helped immensely. He knew the truth about what she was and had done right from the start and he had been honest with her as well. It helped knowing that she wasn’t the only one who was trying to make a life in the town without drawing too much attention and she knew that if she ever needed it then there was at least one person outside of the Salvatore family that she could count on. That day she and Ares had ended up picking up an incredibly tame call by Mystic Falls’ standards and it was with amusement that she watched Ares trying to coax the cat down from the tree that it had managed to get itself stuck in. Needless to say a small crowd had soon gathered and as she looked around at each of them she could see that they were just as amused as she was, aside from the owner of course. It should have been an easy task to get the cat down from the tree but for some reason he just didn’t seem to like Ares one bit and she knew that she was going to have to do something to get them out of there if it went on for much longer. If nothing else she knew that she was never going to let her partner live this one down but the truth was that there were plenty of places she would much rather be and she was certain that Ares no doubt felt the same. “Not a chance,” she grinned before letting her expression turn much more serious as she returned to consoling the cat’s owner. Catching sight of the look that Ares was giving her, she gave the owner one last pat on the back before taking a step forward. “There must be something about you that he doesn’t like. Why don’t you come down and let me try?” she offered, knowing that it had to be worth a shot. ARES PATERA

Without a cooler head to prevail Ares might have given in to the momentary temptation and shot the cat out of the tree when his first dozen attempts to coochy-coo the animal towards him had failed. His natural inclination had never been towards violence, despite his previous career perhaps hinting that it might’ve been, but he’d always been impatient, having to work hard to dig within himself and find some sort of temperance at times. As kids it had always been Eros and Clio talking him down, a hand on his shoulder drawing him back when he was ready to fly off the handle. In uniform it had been their commanding officers putting a halt on his temper, the orders they handed down gospel. Arguing over those would’ve seen him out of the field and in the brig, put there for his own good. In war you couldn’t allow your temper to get the better of you, at best it would only get you killed, at worst it would take your whole unit with you. Having another Marines death on his conscience would’ve been a thousand times worse than having this cat’s death on it. Hell, he thought, staring up at the cat with weary enmity in his eyes, having Claire have to take some of the flack for him losing his cool with a brat in furry form was going to weigh more than the cat’s death would. That meant he could do as he wanted and use violence to get him back down again.
At an impasse, having escaped Freddy Krueger’s last swipe at him, Ares had retreated, leaning back on the branch he’d scrambled on to. It was still hissing at him, that voice that undoubtedly turned to a purr for its owner, a growl in the furry throat for him. Ares’s knuckles tightened on the branch overhead as he tried to keep one eye on the cat and one on his partner. ”I don’t know, if you distract the owner there long enough I might be able to play this off as Fluffy just falling out of the tree…” he suggested, dropping his voice further to try and keep his words from the still shocked looking owner. Amusement tried to tug at Ares’ mouth as he watched Claire comfort the owner. If this went on much longer his partner would probably have been tempted to do the shooting herself. Although … cooler minds … Claire had always been one of those. Maybe without her restraint he wouldn’t have made it through the academy without overstepping somewhere. Each stage of the training had been a competition for him and that much competitiveness had always been dangerous. It was likely that streak of needing to be top dog that had him insisting on going up the tree in the first place. Now he bit his lip, watching his partner for a moment before he rolled his eyes and began scrambling down. ”It’s my winning personality. You’re gonna make me look bad now, aren’t you?” he muttered, amusement in his voice despite that possible bitterness of his words. ”You’ll whisper one word to the cat and he’ll jump right down into your arms. Need a boost up there?” As a vampire Claire could’ve leapt into the tree without effort but not in front of a crowd. Using supernatural powers of any kind in public was the sort of red flag that could get a warlock or a vampire in trouble.

Life in Mystic Falls was rarely dull, there always seemed to be something going on but as far as calls went that one had been a relatively tame day. Getting a cat down from a tree should be an easy task but ever since they had arrived Ares had been struggling and in the end quite a crowd had formed. Needless to say Claire was amused by the whole situation and she knew that she wasn’t going to let her friend live this one down in a hurry but she also knew that she couldn’t let it carry on for too much longer. Even though she knew that Ares had only been joking about shooting the cat it was clear that the owner hadn’t taken it that way and if Ares ended up getting scratched by the animal one more time then she had a feeling that it wasn’t going to be pretty. Had it just been the two of them then he could have used magic to coax the animal down from the tree but neither of them could risk drawing attention to themselves in this town so she knew that Ares had been doing the right thing by trying to get the cat down the old fashioned way. There seemed to be a supernatural presence all over the world but when it came to Mystic Falls the town seemed like a beacon for all things supernatural. The town had drawn Claire to it and there had been countless others over the time she had been there as well but they all had to be careful if they were going to avoid drawing the attention of the Sheriff and the Founder’s Council. “Don’t tell me you’re going to let yourself be bested by a cat,” Claire teased, making sure that her voice was low enough that only Ares would hear her. The two of them had been friends for a long time, ever since they had gone through the Academy together in fact, and she knew how much Ares hated to be beaten at anything. She knew that it had to be frustrating for him considering that he had been stuck in the tree trying to tempt the cat down for quite some time now and the thought of doing something drastic just to bring an end to the farce was tempting but she knew that they needed to keep up appearances and that meant getting the cat down despite just how menial a task it was. As he asked if she was going to make him look bad now as he climbed down from the tree, she patted his shoulder and felt a smile touch her lips. “You can count on it,” she nodded, knowing that if nothing else she couldn’t have done a worse job than Ares had done. As he offered to give her a boost, she thought for a moment before shaking her head. “No thanks, I should be fine but when I do get him down you’ll owe me a drink,” she assured him. Even without using her vampire abilities she knew that she could climb the tree having done so countless times when she was younger. With that in mind she grabbed hold of the lowest branches and began pulling herself up into the tree. Soon enough she was as high as she needed to be and after a little coaxing the cat did just as Ares had said and she was able to hook the animal under one arm before using the other to climb back down. “Here we are, he’s fine,” she assured the owner as she handed the cat over before looking over at Ares. “What can I say, he just doesn’t like men,” she grinned before glancing at her watch. “We’d better get back to the station, our shift is over.”ARES PATERA

A battle of the wills was something Ares usually thrived on but there were times when he found himself on the losing end of it. They were rare times, few people and few things could out-stubborn him usually but it had happened and when it did Ares’ mood had a tendency to turn rapidly dark. Challenges were his way of rising to the next level, of becoming a better man but when it came to this damn cat he was sinking instead of rising and both his partner and the owner were aware of it. He was fully prepared to grit his teeth and keep at this until he had the better of the animal but at the rate he was going that would honestly take all night and he’d likely be crawling down at dawn, leaving the little beast up there and needing a trip to see Eros to get himself patched up. It wouldn’t be the first time his brother had needed to do it for him when he’d pushed himself too far – either with his magic or just plain physically. Eros had always been his twins’ saviour. Cooling his hot head, pulling him literally out of the fire at times when they’d been overseas, plugging the holes he’d put in himself or just proving a shoulder to lean on when his little brother had finally cracked and admitted he’d needed it. Being out of the military, not having Eros by his side had left him feeling a little like he’d had that part of himself cut off. They’d been apart for the first time in their lives and despite the fact that Ares was fully applauding the fact that his brother was going to medical school, a part of him was wishing the two of them had gone to the academy together instead.
Thank God he’d met Claire there, Ares thought as he looked down at his partner with his teeth gritted. She’d been the one either pushing him or pulling him there and having her here in town meant that on the job he had someone to save him from himself again. Ares narrowed his eyes at his partner, growling under his breath the way the cat had growled at him when he’d first gone up the tree. ”I’m going to take the intelligent way out of this and not risk Fluffy up there turning into a face hugger when I drag him out of the tree,” Ares muttered, trying to be sensible for once. He’d decided that in this case discretion was the better part of valour, he’d bite back his irritation and he’d let his partner handle this while he watched Fluffy get bested by his partner. Ares crossed his arms, mouth twisting with humour as she turned down his offer for a boost up there. ”I get beaten by a cat and I have to buy you a drink? This is turning out to be such an awesome day.” Grumbling under his breath again but knowing he’d do it anyway, Ares watched his partner pull herself up into the tree easily. He heard the owner next to him coo and reached out a hand to pat her arm soothingly as Claire coaxed the cat right into her arms. The temptation was there to roll his eyes but he behaved as he nudged the tearful owner forward to take Fluffy from his partner. Ares’ brows rose with amusement as he shook his head. ”Doesn’t like men or doesn’t like arrogant men who thought that would be a cakewalk?” he asked. Glancing at his watch to confirm what Claire said, Ares blew out a relieved breath. ”We’ll get back there and then escape to a bar, if you still want that drink I owe you, that is.” The crowd was thankfully already dispersing and soon enough Fluffy would be back inside enjoying his dinner.

For the most part since becoming a vampire Claire had lived out her life alone, preferring to stay away from people when she could so that she wouldn’t be tempted to give in to her instincts and drink human blood, but there were times when she missed the company of other people and now was one of those times. She and Ares had hit it off straight away when the two of them had been paired up together at the Academy and she had often found herself gravitating towards him automatically whenever they had to do anything in pairs. It had been a bit of a shock at first to learn that he was a warlock but he had quickly before one of the few people in the world that she could trust and she had been pleased to learn that he was going to be her partner again when she joined the police force in Mystic Falls. She had seen one or two other towns like Mystic Falls across the country that just seemed to attract the supernatural but the small town in Virginia would always hold a special place in her heart thanks to the time she had spent their with her family while she was still human so she knew that if she was going to put down roots for the first time in years then she might as well do so in Mystic Falls. Having Damon, Stefan and Ares around was definitely a bonus and she had managed to make a few other friends since arriving in the town too. For too long she had kept to herself, choosing to keep her head down and avoid people rather than living her life surrounded by others the way she had done when she was human and the truth was that she had missed having people around that she cared about so she knew that she didn’t want to go back to the way things used to be. As Ares said that he was going to take the intelligent way out, a smile touched her lips. “There’s a first time for everything,” she teased. In all honesty she couldn’t blame him for climbing back down, quite a crowd had gathered and neither of them could risk drawing too much attention to themselves or what they were. It was much better that the crowd thought that they were just two normal police officers doing their job and if she was honest she knew that she not only wanted to save Ares from doing something that he might regret later but she also wanted to save him any further embarrassment if she could so she was glad when he agreed to let her take a shot. “I’m doing you a favour here, I think a drink is a small price to pay if it means you won’t get swiped at again. Next time it could have been an eye,” she offered as she pulled herself up into the tree. It wasn’t long before the cat was safe and sound and she handed the animal over before turning to look at Ares. “Probably a bit of both but either way it’s not my fault you were born with a Y chromosome,” Claire quipped, her smile playful as she looked over at her partner. Moving away from the crowd that was already beginning to disperse and back in the direction of their car, Claire nodded. “I’m definitely in the mood for that drink, it has been a long shift,” she admitted as they reached the car. “Do you want to drive?”ARES PATERA

Stepping down from the Marines hadn’t been an easy decision. Ares had stood at the point in his career where he could either step out of the field and sit behind a desk, guiding other men through combat, or he could step down entirely. Those had been his only choices. As a Staff Sergeant you got to remain in your unit, got to fight, got to move … the moment you took a step above that all that disappeared. Ares had considered it, he seriously had, but at the end of the day he knew that becoming a Gunnery Sergeant would only make him miserable in the long run. With Eros already blazing himself a trail towards med school, Ares knew that he couldn’t stay where he was. It had just taken time to realise where he wanted to go. Maybe the police academy had seemed like an easy choice for a former Marine but Ares would’ve said it hadn’t been the easy choice at all. He hadn’t been sure he’d be up to the challenge of being a cop, whether he had the temperament for it. Going through the academy, pushing himself the way he had through basic training Ares had come to realise that maybe he needn’t have worried so much after all. Law Enforcement was a lot like the Marines, the brotherhood, the keeping of the peace … the uniform. In Claire he’d found the sort of partner his brother had once been for him. Ares supposed he could’ve trained alongside her without revealing those things about himself that were kept from most but his partnership, his friendship, with Claire had gone deeper than that and so they’d each revealed themselves, their true selves and neither of them had judged.
Claire certainly knew him well enough now to be able to tease him out of what might’ve been a foul mood and an incredibly sticky situation. When things got like this growled tones and orders usually began to wear thing but a smile like that and a friendly reminder of how he could be had a tendency to work wonders. Ares’ lips curled into a sour grin as he fought the urge to roll his eyes. ”You’re funny Devereux, really funny,” he muttered. She’d been right though, taking the intelligent way out wasn’t always guaranteed for him. Despite his efforts his hot head typically won out. It had begun to cool now, meaning he wasn’t going to argue too much about the deal they were striking. ”If he’d have tried for my eyes I would’ve … you know ….” Ares twitched his fingers towards his service weapon. Sighing as she got herself up into the tree, Ares finally gave a nod. ”Alright, I’ll spring for a drink, as payment for you doing your civic duty here.” The owner looked far more pleased now than she had at any point since they’d arrived, Fluffy clutched in her arms again. Ares met the cat’s eyes over the owner’s shoulder, baring his teeth at the imperious look it gave him. ”Not my fault I was born with one either. You can blame my parents for that. I’m sure given the choice, they’d rather have had all girls.” Clio had always proven less troublesome for them than he and Eros. For all he knew by now his siblings were already in town, kicking back after their own work days. Looking forward to shrugging his off, Ares nodded to his partner, hand already delving into his pocket. He held up the keys for her to take. ”Feel free to take over. Like you said, long day and a drink or five definitely needed.” And if they ended up at Campbell’s there was always a chance of talking Remi into going home with him afterwards.

There were so many different careers out there that Claire knew she could have pursued but being a police officer was something that she had quickly found that she was good at. Looking after Violet as much as she had when they were growing up had given her the protective instinct and she had realised fairly early on after she became a vampire that since she had been given the chance to live her life without every getting any older, even if it had been against her will, she might as well do something good with it. She knew that she could have easily looked at it the other way and gone about her life without a care in the world but that had never been her style. She had always liked being able to help others and even though it had led to her losing her sister and her family years later she also knew that if Stefan and Damon hadn’t decided to help Violet and save her from Henry and Samuel’s clutches in the first place then she would have never had the chance to see her sister again let alone start a family of her own. Even now she could still remember the way that Henry and Samuel had used her as a human blood bag for weeks before Stefan and Damon had rescued her and she knew that the last thing she wanted was to end up wasting the chance that they had given her that day. So much had changed since then and she would be the first to admit that becoming a vampire had never been on the cards for her but she was doing her best to make the most of the life she had been given and being able to work with Ares again was a pretty good way of doing just that. They had been paired together while they were in the academy and it hadn’t taken Claire long at all to realise that she would never be able to find another partner like Ares. They had struck up a genuine friendship outside of their working relationship and it had ended up becoming so strong that they had come clean with each other about what they were and for Claire it was a relief to know that he had her back. Working on a police force where the Sheriff knew about vampires and was a part of a Council whose sole purpose was to eradicate them meant that every day she was taking a risk by just showing up to work but it was a risk she knew was worth taking and if anything did happen then she knew that she and Ares would stick by each other no matter what. “What can I say, I must be rubbing off on you,” Claire teased, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at her partner. Ares knew as well as she did that he didn’t always think things through before acting but he had decided to make the right move when it came to Fluffy and for that she was grateful. As he spoke again she couldn’t help but laugh. “And break his owner’s heart? I don’t think so,” she grinned, climbing into the tree only to return a few minutes later with the cat. Soon enough the two of them were on their way and as Claire caught sight of the way Ares bared his teeth at the animal she placed a hand on each of his shoulders before pushing him in the opposite direction to the animal. “Come on, no partner of mine is going to let an animal get the better of him,” she said, knowing that it would be a good idea to get Ares as far away from Fluffy as possible. As he spoke again her expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “It would have been nice to have a partner I could drag shopping on our days off,” she mused before patting his arm to let him know that she was only joking. The truth was she couldn’t imagine having any better partner than Ares and she was pretty sure he knew that. Taking the keys from him, she nodded. “You’re on,” she said, climbing into their squad car before buckling up and turning the key. “The Grill or Campbell’s?” she asked as the car pulled away from the kerb. She knew they still had to get changed and she also knew that Ares and one of the bar staff at Campbell’s had history but she had to give him the option. ARES PATERA

’One day you’ll meet a nice girl Ares, you’ll direct that fire inside of you towards her and you’ll fall in love. She’ll change you for the better and who knows, o gios mou, maybe you’ll even give us some grandchildren.’ Ares had always blown off his dad’s words, cheeks darkening as the extended family gathered in the yard for the barbecue would chuckle at the idea. No girl was going to pull him away from the job, no girl was going to have him falling in love that way and kids? Really? He hadn’t even contemplated the idea that anybody was going to change him. That punk of a kid had been proud of who he was and so damn certain about his path into the marines that the idea of him bending, let alone willingly, for anybody had been too ludicrous to contemplate. Ares Patera knew who he was, knew how to get to where he wanted to be and there hadn’t been anybody born yet who could pull him away from that. Oh what a fool he’d been. Fast forward a handful of years and Ares Patera had developed some of the wisdom the Greeks were famed for. He’d known an incredible woman when he’d seen her and he hadn’t let her get away … and it hadn’t happened only once. While Remi had his heart and … if they were ready for it in the future, his potential kids … Claire had him at work. His dad would’ve said poor her and Eros had already given her his sympathies but somehow the vampire and the warlock had managed to mesh in a way he wouldn’t have anticipated when he and Eros had gone their separate ways out of the Marines.
Five years ago it would’ve been his brother congratulating him for knowing when to give in to a cat. Now it was Claire and Ares was just as happy about it either way. Her teasing drew a feigned scowl from him, his lips pressed in a line as he rolled his eyes at her. ”Just make sure it doesn’t happen too much. I start getting a perky attitude and people are gonna start talking about exorcisms.” His words were half growled but all kidding. If only it had been that way with Fluffy’s owner. He could remember the look on the woman’s face when he’d asked about shooting the cat and he wasn’t really intending on following through but, he’d teased anyway. ”Better her heart than him scarring up this pretty mug,” he murmured, keeping his voice low. Luckily nobody was getting scarred today, well, barring the owner who’d probably never let Fluffy out again. The woman seemed ecstatic, cooing words to the evil little beast as he and Claire made their way towards their vehicle. Ares couldn’t resist showing Fluffy one last time what he thought of him, baring his teeth until Claire dragged him away. ”Too late,” he grumbled, turning away from the cat. ”Fluffy there knows it’s already 1-nil to him.” Better it was down than still up there though, last thing they would’ve needed was the fire department and the Sheriff rolling out here to witness his defeat. Crabbing about the fact he had a Y chromosome Ares started joking but then Claire was teasing again and his brows knitted together as he pouted. ”I never I wasn’t willing to go shopping. I just asked why it was going to take eight hours when you were just gonna come home with one bag.” That wasn’t her though, wasn’t any of the women in his life except for his aunt Linda maybe. Ares sighed as the keys plucked from his hand. See, he could bend, he was allowing someone else to drive. Climbing in on the passenger side, he buckled himself up, smirking as he did so. ”You honestly think there’s any competition between the two? Remi trumps a burger any day of the week.” And if he was extra charming to Remi’s boss, she’d have something rustled up for them anyway.

There never seemed to be a dull moment in Mystic Falls but as far as Claire was concerned that was definitely a good thing. She had never been the kind of person that liked being bored, she was always more comfortable when she had something to do with her time and even though she had decided not to follow her dream of becoming an actress after Violet died she had still found something that made her happy. She knew that there were a lot of people who looked down on the police but as far as she was concerned she loved being a police officer and she knew that there wasn’t anything else that she would rather be doing with her time. She knew that there was more going on in the town than met the eye, those who knew about the supernatural world did their best to keep it a secret from those who didn’t know and Claire was definitely one of those people who wanted to protect others. It had been that way her whole life, ever since Violet was born she had made a promise to herself that she was always going to be there for her younger sister and after their mother died she had stepped up to take over where her mother had left off. She had done plenty of things in her life that she wasn’t proud of but at the end of the day she was trying to be the kind of person that she wanted to be and she knew that had to count for something. She knew that she was always going to regret the way that things ended with Violet but she knew that her sister wouldn’t have liked the person that the sirebond had made her become so she was still sure that she had done the right thing no matter how difficult it still was to admit. Most of her days at work weren’t complete without a bar brawl or something like that but it had to be said that it wasn’t every day that she got to see Ares go up against a cat and lose. “I don’t know, I like the new and improved Ares,” Claire teased. She knew that Damon didn’t understand why she enjoyed working with Ares but the truth was that he was one of her best friends and even though he could come across as being grouchy and uptight at times she never minded. Ares was one of the few people she trusted completely and she knew that she couldn’t ask for a better partner although she knew better than to tell him that and inflate his ego even more. “You never know, Remi might think that scars add character,” she said, a playful smile working its way across her face as she looked over at her partner. She knew that it was going to annoy Ares that he had been beaten by a cat to no end but she was still pretty amused by it nonetheless. “You know not all of us are like that,” she said as they reached the vehicle and climbed in. She had never been that kind of person and she hoped that she never would be. As Ares spoke again, Claire rolled her eyes. “Fine but in that case you’re buying and I might invite Damon or Stefan along so I don’t end up playing third wheel to you two again,” she said as she pulled the car away from the kerb and they headed back to the station. He was abrasive, he rubbed people up the wrong way and was very rarely apologetic for it afterwards. In the military it almost came with the territory and with Eros balancing him out with his caring attitude in their team it had worked well for them. Nobody had to be super sensitive in battle, it was far more important to be decisive, to be able to stay calm in the face of a mega crap storm. That attitude hadn’t gone down quite so well in the academy but just like he’d had Eros at his side before he’d had Claire at his side then. Their partnership had balanced him out and alright, he might not have admitted it too readily out here, she’d balanced him out again today. He wouldn’t have shot Fluffy … not in front of witnesses anyway … but Ares knew his frustration would’ve gotten the better of him eventually and he might’ve gone wet nose to snarling face with that cat and come off the worse for it. There would’ve been humiliation burning across his face as he’d trailed back to the station with a face sliced to ribbons by the cat. By morning he would’ve been able to dull the angry scratches to something barely noticeable with spells and one of the salves he made but still the story would’ve been out there and it would’ve been his own damn fault for not being able to dial his temper back. By now he ought to have known better but honestly making a new and improved Ares took time. There was no quick adjustment, no turning on a dime. Just that slow, dogged progress that had always been the Marine way. Oorah.
Ares imagined that if he managed to keep himself in check a little more it would sure as hell make Claire’s days rising in the patrol car with him easier. He couldn’t get up a hell of a lot of chagrin over what had happened though. Claire’s teasing had drawn a scowl and eye roll from him instead but he huffed out an amused breath. ”Gonna get me some pom-poms for my birthday?” he asked. That would’ve been all over the station in an instant, scuttlebutt just as bad in the sheriff’s department as it was in the military. Claire would never go all out to make him the butt of all that though, she had his back completely and he both knew it and appreciated it. As she told him Remi might have appreciated his scars, Ares raised a hand and ran it over his jaw. ”There’s already enough of those to add character as it is,” he reminded her. Being a warlock gave him ways to help heal wounds, or rather gave Eros ways, but he was still human underneath all that, he didn’t heal near instantly like his partner. His ego was quickest to heal but even that was gonna take its time over the damn cat. Ares shot his partner a grin as he got in on the passenger side. ”You tell me it’s one shop and we’re done and I’ll be right there,” he promised. Unless it was the hardware store he’d still be rolling his eyes and shifting uneasily every five minutes. Unless he was the one in the lead he got antsy pretty quickly. He held his hands up now as Claire pulled out. ”I’ll be a good partner and take the hit. We’ll make it a burger at the Grill. My shout just to prove the new and improved Ares is sticking around. Deal?” They could’ve made it a party over at Campbell’s but he wouldn’t put his partner in a tough spot playing third wheel again if she couldn’t get either of the Salvatore brothers there.

Claire had never found it easy to trust people after she became a vampire but Ares had gained her trust pretty quickly when the two of them went through the academy together. She had seen something different in him and even though for the most part warlocks and vampires didn’t get along, they were the exception to that rule. They didn’t always see eye to eye on everything but they had each other’s back no matter what and she knew that that was as it should be. Ares wasn’t just her partner, he was also one of her best friends and even though she gave him a hard time sometimes she knew how lucky she was to have him. She could count on one hand the number of people that she could trust completely in the world and right now all of them were in Mystic Falls so she knew that she had made the right decision when she had decided to move there. She could have gone anywhere she wanted but after being alone for so long she had wanted the connection that she had to Mystic Falls in her life. She had been there before with her family when she had left her new address at the Post Office so that Stefan and Damon would be able to find her when the time came for them to meet up and she knew that the town was always going to be home to the Salvatores so it had felt right to head back there after so long. She hadn’t known that either of them would be in town or that Ares would have ended up moving there either but now she had three of the most important people to her back in her life and she knew that that was something worth fighting for. Seeing Ares getting bested by a cat just made it even better as far as she was concerned and even though she knew that she wasn’t going to drop him in it with the others at the station since that just wasn’t her style, she certainly wasn’t going to let him forget about it anytime soon while they were alone together. “How did you know?” she teased as he asked if she was going to get him some pom poms for his birthday. She wasn’t really going to do that but it was still fun to tease him about it nonetheless. “You know you’d love it. Remi might even do a routine for you if you’re lucky,” she added with a grin. That was never going to happen but she knew that it couldn’t hurt to put the image into Ares’ head after the day he’d had anyway. Shaking her head in amusement as he said that he already had enough scars to add character, she knew that he had a point. Ares had gained a lot over the years and there were times when she had thought about offering him some of her blood to heal them but she knew that he wouldn’t go for it anyway. She was pretty sure that it was a man thing as a lot of them seemed to think that scars added character and some women did too but Claire had never been into that kind of thing herself. “I’ll hold you to that,” Claire grinned as she climbed into the driver’s side. She wasn’t sure if she ever would drag Ares shopping with her at any point but she did enjoy spending time with him even on her days off so there that was a chance. Pulling the car out onto the road, Claire couldn’t deny that she was surprised when Ares said they should go to the Grill instead and she shot him a quick look. “Are you sure?” she asked, knowing that she didn’t really mind being around him and Remi again as long as she had some company of her own. “Or are you just wanting to avoid spending time with Damon again?”ARES PATERA

Mortification was something he could always rely on his siblings for. Ares knew that he had a pretty healthy ego, perhaps too healthy in some people’s opinions but the truth was he’d always had someone there to help him deflate it from time to time. In fact he’d come to rely on it. Until he and Eros had decided to step down from the uniform the two of them had been practically inseparable. Whatever unit one had been in the other had been right there alongside them. When Eros had made that leap to the medical side of things Ares had been tempted to join him but they’d both known it was never going to work out that way. He’d never had the bed side manner for it. He was a leader of men, somebody who had convince just about anybody to walk out into a field of fire with him through strength of will alone but when it came to comforting those whose lives were falling apart .. he was useless. Right now he was pretty sure Fluffy’s owned would’ve agreed. This wasn’t playing to his strengths at all and his partner knew it.
Ares felt his cheeks heat faintly as he mentally kicked himself for even giving Claire the idea of turning him into some sort of cheesy 1980s pom-pom waving cheerleader. He raised his brows, squelching the urge to squirm as he stink eyed his partner. ”Because I know the way that steel trap of a mind of yours works,” he said wryly. Puffing out a breath, Ares finally broke into a snort. ”She’d probably make it clear it should be the other way around. She’s all for equal opportunities.” And for making sure that men never forgot that she was as strong and as fierce as any of them. It was what had made him fall for her even when the wisest thing would’ve been for them to keep things entirely casual. As it was Ares was pretty sure that at some point soon she would be heading back out on another deployment. He’d found his thing here, had settled into a life he was happy with, the wiser part of him was sure that Remi still hadn’t found that.
Still, the thought of her in that little pleated skirt rah-rah-rahing for him was enough to put a smile back on his face. Despite everything he’d gone through Ares knew he was one hell of a lucky man. He’d come through things when others hadn’t, walked out the other side bearing the marks of it all proudly. Agreeing to go shopping with his partner might leave him with some more but as Ares reached across the central console and bumped his fist lightly on her arm, he knew it’d be worth it. ”I’ll get some practice in with Remi, make sure I build up my stamina for it.” One hazel eye winked as he buckled up. He could always return the favour and drag her to the hardware store for a whole afternoon of paint chip selecting and lumber sawing. Ares glanced her way, keeping his hands up. ”Positive,” he promised before his expression twisted faintly. ”There might’ve been some threat of bodily harm from Olivia if I distracted Remi a whole night again.” As Claire pinpointed the blame on him wanting to avoid spending time with Damon again, Ares puffed out a breath. ”Naw,” he drawled. ”I can put up with him anytime. He’s more likely to be at the Grill anyway, isn’t he?” It had always seemed to be Damon’s spot.

It had taken Claire a long time to feel comfortable with who she was after she became a vampire but the truth was that now she had finally figured that out. She knew that she didn’t have to become a monster, Stefan and Damon were proof that it was possible to become a vampire and still be a good person and even though the two of them had made mistakes along the way they had still come out of it all the other side. At the end of the day that was all that any of them could hope for and Claire had people in her corner who would make sure that she didn’t end up giving into the bloodlust. She had opted for the animal blood diet after she killed Lord Ainsley in order to protect her family and it wasn’t a decision she regretted. Back them drinking from blood bags wouldn’t have been an option for her and even though she knew that she could change that now if she wanted to she was so used to the diet she had adopted so long ago that she knew that there wasn’t really much point. She was able to be the person that she wanted to be and it made working with Ares that much easier so she knew that it wasn’t a bad thing. She was already putting herself at enough risk by working on the police force in a town where so many people knew about the supernatural world and hated people who were a part of it so she knew better than to take any more unnecessary risks. She knew that she could count on Ares to always have her back anyway and that was something that she knew better than to take for granted. He kept her secret and in turn she kept his. He was her partner and one of her best friends so she knew that she was safe whenever they were working together and she could keep an eye out for him as well. It was easy to fall back into the old teasing pattern with him and Claire felt a smile work its way across her face as he said that he knew how her mind worked. “I don’t know about that, I’m sure I could still come up with a few things that might surprise you,” she teased before laughing and holding her hands up in front of her. “Listen, whatever the two of you do in private is none of my business,” she grinned, knowing that she really didn’t want an image like that in her mind if she could help it. “Good idea although I imagine that shopping with her will be worse,” she teased as she pulled the car out onto the road once they were both inside. “Between that and you breaking glasses when you try and help out if she’s short staffed I’m surprised she hasn’t barred you already,” she laughed. She knew that Olivia would never actually do that, despite whatever threats she might send his way the woman liked Ares but it was still fun to tease him nonetheless. “That’s a good point, he is,” she nodded as Ares asked if Damon was more likely to be at the Grill. “At least you know I won’t end up ditching you for the whole night anyway,” she added with a grin. The truth was that she still wasn’t too sure where she and Damon stood at the moment, they had admitted that there was something going on between them while he was suffering from the werewolf bite but they hadn’t talked about it since. She kept trying to tell herself that she was fine with that, after all she had given Damon the chance to forget about it, but she couldn’t deny that it still hurt to an extent but it was something that she knew she would have to learn to live with. In your fire team, in a squad, even in your platoon, you knew you always had someone to watch your back. He’d had that in Eros anyway and always would do, even if they were states apart again, but when things went to hell having an entire time behind you was everything. When that giant step had come along – stay put and promote out of the field or jump – and he’d jumped his back had felt vulnerable. He never would’ve said it aloud to anybody, the hard assed Ares Patera would never do that, but he’d felt it all the same. Out of the academy, with Claire moved on to who only knew where and Eros off doing his med school thing it had been an uneasy feeling. Shoulders constantly shrugging beneath the starched uniform, that incessant feeling of a target being on his back with nobody else around to do something if someone took a shot at it. He’d hated it. There’d been time with his parents in Miami, with Clio too, a job he’d loved and yet there’d been that something missing. Mystic Falls wasn’t going to get him Eros back at his side in the same way but it had been an opportunity to start fresh in a way. He’d bitten off more than he could chew with the house in the woods but it had been a project to keep him occupied and something he could drag Eros into helping with. Finding Claire here had been a bonus on top of that. Getting to ride with her every shift suddenly made him feel like he had his team back again. Despite all the bickering that always happened when you worked that close to someone, this had been a blessing.
Fluffy probably hadn’t made it feel like too much of one today but Claire had dragged his ass out of that fire before Fluffy had torn his face off and he’d taken a far less elegant way of getting the cat out of the tree than bowing out and passing the job over to his partner. Ares cleared his throat, holding his finger up at Claire in warning. ”No more surprises, not today,” he warned, huffing out a sigh. Hazel eyes narrowed at her as he dragged his hands up over his face. ”Like that ever stopped you teasing before.” That was a part of their friendship though and neither one took offence at any of it. Ares made a lot sound in his throat as he relaxed back in the passenger seat one leg bouncing up and down as Claire pulled out. ”It wouldn’t be that bad. She’s not the sort to buy everything in sight.” As a naval officer herself Remi had always had the habit of travelling light, the way he once had. That was one of the downsides of settling down somewhere, the sudden accumulation of stuff. The accumulation of people was the upside to that though. Olivia had been one of them, always he was pretty sure that she was happy to get rid of him some nights. Ares clucked his tongue at Claire’s teasing, grinning as he shook his head. ”She loves me too much for that. The glasses get added to my tab anyway and I’m getting better it was only three glasses the last time.” He’d take picking up broken glass over spending time with Damon any day of the week. The glasses didn’t snark at the very least. Hazel eyes narrowed, slid sideways as he twisted in the seat. ”Exactly,” he drawled lightly. ”How about things going with Tall, Dark and Snarky anyway?” It wasn’t prying, he would swear to that but partnership meant you watched out for your partner off the clock too. Anybody who hurt Claire was always going to have to deal with a pissed off warlock too.
