He should’ve stayed clear. When word had reached him that Elena was in danger from the Original vampires, the family that had started this whole horrific shebang a thousand years ago, he should’ve just blocked his ears and left Mystic Falls and the whole doppelganger line to burn. They could’ve been razed to the ground and for the first time in over a hundred years Damon Salvatore would’ve been free. Only he hadn’t run, he hadn’t left to them to their fate. That part of him that had started to develop feelings for Elena had pulled at him like an anchor and he’d found himself heading back here. Damon let out a bitter laugh as he struggled out of the Camaro. His throat worked as he held on to the edge of the door frame, fingers white knuckling with the effort. Stefan had rubbed off on him, it was the only explanation he was willing to give for the fact that he’d come back here, pride still singing, to save his brother’s girlfriend. Giuseppe wouldn’t be rolling in his grave now, he’d be laughing at his eldest son’s predicament, reminding him that this was why the Founder’s Council had sworn to eradicate vampires. Maybe if they’d done a better job of it back then he wouldn’t have been walking stiff legged towards the sheriff’s station now, trying to pick out the glimmer of dark hair through the lit windows. Niklaus Mikaelson and his whole family would’ve been dead by now, the ritual stopped before it had ever started and he’d have been where he should’ve been in the first place, cold in the ground.
Sweat beaded down his spine, coalescing into fat, cold drops that were soaking the back of his t-shirt. Damon stretched out a hand, fingers biting into the brick wall of the Sheriff’s station. He didn’t have to look down to see the ragged bite mark on his arm, delivered by one of Niklaus’ pet werewolves when he’d tried to stop Niklaus from compelling Stefan to leave town with him. The poison was already spreading, burning through his veins. Soon enough it would be more than a burn, Niklaus had told him that much in that mocking voice of his before they’d left the Boarding House. The bite was fatal, the only cure something he’d never be able to get his hands on … Niklaus’ blood. Damon knew he was dead, Klaus was never going to hand his blood over, hell, the pompous asshole was probably laughing it up with Stefan now, forcing his little brother to celebrate the fact that he was soon going to be free of him. He could’ve taken himself off into the woods, killed himself, even begged Casey to do it for him but he hadn’t gone to the Diner, or out into the wilderness like some dying animal. He’d come looking for Claire. She’d saved him once hadn’t she? It couldn’t happen again but still, this was where he’d driven, the one person he wanted to be with. Damon tugged the door open, steadying himself on the edge of it as he eyed the Deputy behind the desk. ”Hey, Chief Wiggum, you want to get Officer Devereux on the radio for me? Tell her an old friend needs her here.” The deputy’s lip curled for a moment as he started to shake his head. Damon’s bitten arm whipped out, his hand grabbing for the guy’s shirt. ”I’m not gonna say please. Emergency. You did it now? Yes?” As the deputy pulled away, Damon let him go. Undoubtedly the emergency button under the counter would be hit at the same time as the radio was picked up.

The ritual was over and the sacrifices had been saved but Claire couldn’t help but feel that their worries were far from over. Klaus and his family were dangerous, they had been alive for over a thousand years and countless bodies had been left in their wake but now Klaus had unleashed his werewolf side and Claire knew that the world as they knew it had changed forever. An Original vampire was powerful enough but now Klaus was a hybrid there was no telling what he was going to be able to do. The smart thing would have been to leave town, to forget that she had ever heard the name Mystic Falls or that she had bumped into some old friends while she had been there, but that would have been taking the coward’s way out. Even as a human Claire had never shied away from the supernatural world, she hadn’t become a part of it by choice but she was a vampire now and she knew that she couldn’t change that. As soon as she had learned that Stefan and Damon were in town and just what they were up against she had made a promise to herself that she would do whatever she could in order to help them. She knew that she needed to be careful, after all she was a vampire working on a police force run by a Sheriff who knew all about vampires from what she had been told, but letting her guard down wasn’t something that she tended to do very often so she knew that she just had to believe that she would be just fine. Either way, leaving Mystic Falls just wasn’t an option and deep down she knew that she wouldn’t have been able to leave the Salvatores again even if she had wanted to. They were the closest thing she had to a family now that Violet and the rest of her family were gone and she wasn’t in any hurry to be on her own again. That day Claire was busy working, a routine call that should be fairly easy to deal with but soon enough a call came over the radio asking her to return to the station because an old friend needed her. Needless to say she was confused but as a call came from another unit to say that they would deal with the disturbance she had been heading to instead she was free to return to the station. Promising her partner that she would be back as soon as she could she climbed out of the car and headed inside only to find perhaps the last person she had expected waiting for her. She knew that Damon wouldn’t tried to see her while she was working unless it was something important and straight away she could see the beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He didn’t look good at all and that alone was enough to fill her with concern. “Damon, you look awful. What’s wrong?” she asked, studying him carefully as she tried to gauge his reaction. From what she had been told Stefan was with Klaus at the moment with the latter trying to convince Stefan to leave town with him on some kind of a mission. She didn’t know the details but already she was worried enough about the state Damon was in to try and track Stefan down and get him to help. DAMON SALVATORE

This wasn’t what he’d pictured when he’d driven back past the stifling border of the town he hadn’t been able to wait to escape months before. Poor Damon Salvatore, heart broken by the callous harpy who’d turned both he and Stefan, so whipped by her that he’d come back to the place in the entire world he’d hated the most to save the harpy’s descendant. To save the girl his brother had fallen for. Damon had expected pity, had expected the knowing looks from the Scooby Gang but he’d come anyway, knowing that they’d find a way to deal with the Original family, the same way they’d dealt with everything else in the last hundred and fifty years. They always got their asses kicked at first but never let it be said that the Salvatore brothers didn’t learn from their mistakes. They took their lumps and learned for them, learned just how to crawl to the top of the food chain. Only this time they hadn’t. Damon could feel the evidence of that burning its way towards his heart like acid in his veins. The Originals hadn’t just bested them, Niklaus Mikaelson had divided them again, bending Stefan’s arm until Stefan had no choice but to follow. It was dirty pool, any real choice taken out of the matter by compulsion. That was what it was like to be on the other side. He hadn’t liked it when Katherine had manipulated him, liked it even less now that someone else had done it and left him staggering towards one of the only other people he trusted implicitly in this town.
Holding on to the edge of the desk with a white knuckle grip Damon watched as the deputy step back and grab the arm of another. A muttered conversation that wouldn’t have escaped the hearing of a deaf ninety-year old let alone a vampire and the husky soccer dad was heading into the radio room to pass on the message. He’d caught the word ‘drunk’ and sneered at the deputy as he returned. ”I’ll show you drunk some time Gumby,” he promised as he backed up towards the row of scarred plastic seats. Damon didn’t know how much time passed between the call going out and Claire arriving. His head was tipped back against the wall, blue eyes slits as he watched the comings and goings of the sheriff’s station. No sign of Forbes, she was probably out at the quarry, drawn by the evidence left behind of the ritual, reports of flames undoubtedly reaching her eventually. Not a party this time Liz, something far worse, something that could’ve dragged Elena in. Those blue eyes fluttered as he finally heard the door open again, as he caught sight of Claire in a uniform he usually would’ve ribbed her about. One corner of Damon’s mouth lifted even as the fire seemed to intensity, racing through his joints, burning coal hot on his tongue. ”Had a little run in with some wild-life,” he admitted, pushing his way unsteadily to his feet, earning himself another look from the deputy at the desk. ”It didn’t take too well to my winning personality. We need to get out of here, I need to …” Avoid ears. Get somewhere where he couldn’t eventually break free and slake the thirst he could feel building on his tongue. No better than a rabid dog now, thanks to Niklaus. Damon reached out, damp fingers squeezing Claire’s arm as he nodded to the doors.

One thing Claire had always wanted while she was growing up was to make something of her life. There was a time when she and Violet had both wanted to become famous, she had wanted to become an actress while Violet had wanted to become a singer but that dream had changed the moment her eyes had been opened to the truth about vampires. Since then her childhood dream had always seemed so foolish and she had instead found herself wanting nothing more than to be able to live a quiet life. She hadn’t stayed in touch with Damon and Stefan the way she had thought she would, even though she had left her address at the Post Office in Mystic Falls the way she had promised she would she had failed to show up for their meeting. She knew now that Damon hadn’t either but it had been for very different reasons. By that time she had been too ashamed to meet with them, she had come to care about both of them during the time she had spent with them and she had seen the incredible things they could do but it wasn’t the kind of life that she had ever wanted for herself. She had wanted to see her children grow up and start families of their own and she had wanted to see out the rest of her days with her husband. Now her husband and children were all gone and she was left alone in the world. She knew that she could have tracked Stefan and Damon down beforehand and if she had then perhaps her life wouldn’t have been such a lonely one for so long but now she was surrounded by people she cared about and she knew that she couldn’t go back to her solitary life, nor would she ever want to. Joining the police force in Mystic Falls probably seemed like a strange decision considering that the Sheriff and others in the town all knew about the vampires in their town but it was what she wanted to do with her life and she knew that she at least had the support of the people who mattered. That day had been a fairly uneventful one until the call came over the radio that a friend needed her and she knew straight away who it had to be. Stefan or Ares would have called if they had needed her but Damon had always had his own way of doing things so she wasn’t surprised to find that it was indeed him waiting for her when she got back to the station although the state he was in definitely wasn’t something that she had expected. One of the benefits of being a vampire was that they didn’t have to worry about getting sick but there was definitely something wrong with Damon and as he said that he’d had a little run in with the wildlife her concern for him began to grow even more. As he pushed himself to his feet, Claire instantly moved to his side and put his arm over her shoulders, her own arm wrapping around him so that she could support him before glancing back at the Deputy at the desk. “Tell the Sheriff I’m sorry but I have to go, it’s an emergency. I’ll make the time up later,” she said, patting Damon’s hand before leading him out of the station and in the direction of her car. “Don’t worry, you can explain what happened on the way. I’m going to get you home and then I’m going to call Stefan. He’ll know what to do,” she assured him even though she couldn’t shake the feeling of worry that was growing inside of her with each passing moment. As they reached the car she opened the door and helped Damon into it before climbing into the driver’s side. “What happened?” she asked as pulled the car out of the parking lot and out onto the road. In his car, as the road had swum in front of his eyes and his hunger had started to make fangs ache in his gums, Damon had wondered whether coming back to Mystic Falls had been worth it. They hadn’t been able to stop the ritual in the end, three people had still died to turn Niklaus from a vampire asshole into a more powerful hybrid asshole. The three might’ve been brought back by Klaus’ own brother and Tatia’s warlock son, but they had died. He hadn’t been able to stop Niklaus from trying to swan out of town with Stefan either. It was a Catch-22 moment, stay and watch his big brother die a slow, agonising death, because undoubtedly Stefan wouldn’t have had the heart to put him out of his misery the way others might do, or fall on his sword, leave with Niklaus and get the cure he was going to need. Damon knew that Stefan was going to try and do the second. Saint Stefan, hero of Mystic Falls’ rebellion, saviour of the damned and Damon knew everyone else in this town except for his brother, Elena and Claire would call him that. The term had him laughing, the hunger dialling back for a moment with the gesture. His presence sure as hell hadn’t been worth it for any of them. Without him here they’d all have gone on exactly the same and Stefan, well, Stefan wouldn’t have been forced to make the choice to try and keep him alive. He had come though and each step through town, through this mess the Mikaelsons had made of it, had led him on the path towards his death finally and back towards Claire.
The fact that she’d saved his life before wasn’t lost on Damon as Claire rushed to his side and got an arm around him before his shot balance had him pitching face first onto the tile. A fall like that would mean that someone in the station would either haul his ass to the drunk tank or they’d have an ambulance heading here for him. Given the way that the poison would kill him both were mistakes. He needed to be away from anybody he could try feeding on now, not trapped with them all around him. Desperately he needed Claire to get him out of there … and then she could help him put an end to what he knew was going to be a miserable last couple of days of his life. ”She’s going to think it’s a booty call,” Damon warned as he forced his legs to help carry his weight out of the station. The fresh air was a slap to the face, enough to rouse him enough that he was straightening up a little. ”Don’t call Stefan,” he warned sharply as they drew to a stop at the side of Claire’s car. His eyes were narrowed as he shook his head at her. ”He can’t help right now, Klaus made certain of that.” Damon slumped inside with Claire’s help, tilting his head back as she started the car and pulled out. A bitter laugh made its way free of his throat as he looked across at her. ”Turns out that Stefan and Klaus are old friends. Klaus wanted himself a Thelma and Louise like road trip with Stefan playing Good Time Thelma. When Stefan didn’t jump at the chance immediately Klaus decided to force his arm by chowing down on mine.” Biting back a groan, Damon lifted his arm, peeled back the sleeve of his t-shirt to reveal the bite mark beneath. Sweat trickled down the limb, following the dark lines of the poison beneath the skin.

From the moment she had decided to return to Mystic Falls Claire had known that she was taking a massive risk. She had been there once before during her human days with her family and she had never thought that she would return to the town but after hearing just how many vampires and other members of the supernatural world were trying to put down roots in Mystic Falls it had made her want to do the same. For the most part since she became a vampire she had kept herself at a distance from those around her, never really socialising too much outside of the classroom when she decided to go to school and rarely making friends that she let get close enough to her to really know her. Ares was one of the chosen few, the two of them had made it through the Academy together and there had been a few more along the way but other than that the only people who really knew her properly were Stefan and Damon. The two of them had known her back when she was human and completely out of her depth when it came to the supernatural world but she had still managed to be of use to them and even though Violet hadn’t made it through everything that they had faced with Henry and Samuel it at least made it easier knowing that her sister wasn’t under their control any longer and that she couldn’t hurt anyone else. Claire didn’t know if her sister had ever found peace or not but she honestly hoped that she had done because at the end of the day even now all she wanted was what was best for her sister and that was all she had ever wanted. When she lost Violet, Claire had promised herself that she wasn’t going to lose anyone else that she loved but she had failed miserably in that respect. She had been forced to leave her husband and children behind after she became a vampire and even though she had checked in on them from a distance from time to time it had still hurt knowing that she couldn’t be a part of their lives any longer. She knew that that was at least a part of why she hadn’t let too many people get close to her, it was easier to keep a distance and avoid going through the pain of losing anyone else but now it looked like she might lose Damon and that was something that she absolutely refused to do. She knew how he felt about himself, he had said on more than one occasion that he wasn’t worth the trouble but as far as she was concerned he was and he always had been. She cared about Damon and had done from the moment she met him despite how they had annoyed each other at first and if she was honest there might even be more than that there on her part but she knew better than to think about that at the moment, not with everything that was going on because she knew that losing someone else she loved might just break her. As Damon said that the Sheriff was going to think that it was a booty call, Claire shook her head. “I don’t care, she can think what she wants. Right not I’m more worried about you,” she said as she led Damon towards the car. She knew that she was going to have a lot of explaining to do when she got back but the truth was that she really didn’t care in that moment, there would always be other jobs and if it came down to a choice between her job and helping a friend then as far as she was concerned it was a no brainer. “What do you mean?” she asked as she helped Damon into the car, closing the door behind him before climbing into the driver’s side. “I’m going to call him, Damon, he needs to know what is going on,” she said, her eyes stinging with tears she refused to let fall as she looked at the bite on his arm. Normally she would do as Damon had asked but she knew that she couldn’t do that this time, there was no way. It sounded like he might already know but she had a feeling that Stefan wasn’t aware of just how bad it was so as far as she was concerned she owed it to him to tell him. “He won’t leave without making a deal with Klaus. He doesn’t want to lose you any more than I do,” she said as she pulled the car out of the parking lot and out onto the road. “You’re going to be fine, just you wait and see,” she said as she took the road that would take them to the Boarding House although she wasn’t sure whether it was for Damon’s benefit or her own. He should’ve known that doing the right thing would eventually bite him on the ass. Sitting at the end of the bar halfway across the damn country, listening to the idiot vampires at a table in the back whispering about the threat to the doppelganger, Damon had known that going back to Mystic Falls would be a mistake. He’d done it anyway, his brother and Elena playing on his mind until he’d gotten back into the Camaro and had started to drive. If he’d known what was going to come of it, would he have bothered coming? Damon knew if he would’ve asked Claire that question she’d have said that he’d have been there no matter what but she’d always been able to see something in him he would’ve said hadn’t existed since he’d been that idiot kid going off to war to try and make the father who’d obviously despised him happy. He’d done it though, hadn’t he? Returned to town, stood by Stefan’s side to go up against the thing whose mother had started off this whole she-bang, kept Elena out of it and watched at the quarry as the thing’s own brother had brought back all those who’d been slaughtered. For once Damon Salvatore had tried to do the right thing and what had he gotten for it? A bite that was going to kill him. The irony of it was enough to have laughter bubbling up in his throat. Karma had probably gotten around to trying to teach him a lesson for all he’d done in the last century and a half, taking a lump out of him just as surely as Niklaus Mikaelson had.
It wasn’t like he hadn’t done enough to deserve that slap down. Making his brother’s life a misery for a century and a half, hurting more people in this town than most of them could count, handing Lexi over to the very Sheriff he was now friends with. Liz only knew him as the friendly neighbourhood Salvatore component of the Founder’s Council. Eyebrows would certainly be raised if it looked like he was calling a patrol officer off of her shift for a little fun between the sheets. The Sheriff would be scandalised. It was almost enough to bring another chuckle on but he didn’t think he could manage it. ”I’m not worth a lot of things, including you losing your cover here,” he told her, knowing that whatever he said wasn’t going to make a damn bit of difference here. And wasn’t that why he’d come to Claire in the first place? Elena, Caroline, Alaric, even Bonnie, they all could’ve sat and watched him die but it hadn’t been any of them he’d gone to in the end … it had been her. ”I mean don’t call him,” he said again, slumping into his seat, his head lolling back against the headrest. ”By now that mangy mutt is probably rubbing it anyway, dangling me over his head as leverage.” Knowing Stefan he’d allow his arm to be bent, anything for his undeserving big brother. This was definitely karma, Damon thought, looking down at the dark veins slowly spreading beneath the skin. ”He makes a deal and we’ve lost him. Klaus will have him flipping his switch and without Lexi there to drag him back, nothing will stop the ripper in him.” The only way through it was for them to finally let him go. Both of them would be free at last and maybe there’d be some sort of peace for him on the other side. Nausea rolled in the pit of his stomach as he chuckled. ”You always were Pollyanna,” he retorted on a chuckle. ”Whatever we do, one of us is screwed in this.” And for once he’d rather it was him. Sucking in a breath, Damon reached out, anchoring himself by settling a hand on Claire’s leg.

Claire loved her job but she knew that there were other things that she could be doing if she wanted to. Being so close to the Sheriff and the deputies who had been clued in on the supernatural element of Mystic Falls wasn’t easy and she always had to make sure that she was careful but she liked being able to help people and she had learned a long time ago that for her the best way to be able to do that was by being a police officer. When it came to the people she cared about, though, there wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for them and that included dropping everything when they needed her. Damon clearly needed her now otherwise he wouldn’t have sought her out the way he had done and even though she knew that she was going to have to explain her sudden disappearance later she knew that she would come up with something. She had never seen what a werewolf bite could do before but it was already taking its toll on Damon and she knew that she wasn’t about to leave him alone. There was still so much about what was going on that she didn’t know but she knew that she would find out sooner or later. Damon had warned her from the moment that she arrived in town that there was trouble looming on the horizon and it looked like he had been right. Stefan had tried to warn her too, he had tried to talk her into leaving town but as always she was stubborn and she knew that when it came to the Salvatore brothers she was never going to turn her back on them. While it was true that she had kept her distance after she became a vampire and she had been a little apprehensive at first when she had bumped into Damon they were the closest thing to family that she had left and they had accepted who she was now so she knew that she never wanted to let them down. As Damon said that he wasn’t worth her losing her cover over, Claire rolled her eyes. “I’ll talk my way out of it but if the Sheriff doesn’t listen there will always be other jobs. I’m here because I chose to be, as much as I enjoy my job you mean more to me,” she said, knowing that now was as good a time as any to be honest about that. Normally she would have made some kind of quick remark and brushed off his comment but the truth was that she didn’t know if Damon was going to make it or not so she knew that there was no point in holding back now. She knew that there were plenty of people that Damon could have called if he had wanted to but he hadn’t, he had sought her out instead and that meant something as far as she was concerned so there was no way that she was going to leave him to face this on his own now. “He needs to know how you are doing Damon, he’s your brother. If it was Violet I would want to know,” she said gently. She knew that Stefan and Damon had had their differences but they seemed like they were in a much better place now and she knew that Stefan deserved to know what was going on right from the source rather than from someone looking to rub his nose in it. As Damon said that without Lexi there wasn’t anything to stop the Ripper in Stefan, Claire shook her head. “You underestimate him. I’ve seen how Stefan is now, he has you and Elena and everyone else around him. He has plenty of people to pull him back from the edge,” she assured him. She knew that it wouldn’t be easy but Stefan had plenty of people around who loved him and would make sure that he didn’t lose himself completely. “He loves you Damon, I know he won’t want to lose you.” The bond between siblings was something that so often couldn’t be broken even when things were at their very worst. She had seen how Stefan and Damon were together, even when they hated each other they would still do whatever they had to in order to protect one another and she didn’t doubt that Stefan would find a way to save Damon now. As he spoke again before settling a hand on her leg, Claire bit back the playful comment that was on her lips and simply covered Damon’s hand with one of her own while the other held onto the wheel and she turned the car onto the road that would lead to the Boarding House. “Don’t you dare give up on me now Damon Salvatore, I didn’t find you again after all this time just to lose you now,” she said fiercely, her eyes stinging with tears as she looked over at him. “Stefan will find a cure, you just need to hold on.”DAMON SALVATORE

Just a year ago he’d been fully prepared to raze Mystic Falls and all who lived in her to the ground. Katherine had nearly destroyed every ounce of giving a damn that was left in him, the hundred and fifty year old long con she’d played on him erasing any desire to still see the town and its occupants standing. Stefan included. Heart stinging like it’d been scalded, Damon had taken himself out of the town, away from all of this and Mystic Falls’ uncanny ability to strip away any shielding he had around those parts of himself he’d tried to cut away. The surgical precision hadn’t worked, the shields hadn’t gone back up fast enough. Instead of making his brother’s life a misery himself someone else had stepped in to do it. The only way Klaus could’ve twisted Stefan’s arm any harder in all of this was to put Elena’s life at threat. Mayen if it hadn’t been for his thousand year dead ex-flame maybe Klaus would’ve done it but he hadn’t. He’d sunk teeth into the only other person in Stefan’s life who meant enough to convince his brother to cave. If the shoe was on the other foot he would’ve sworn blind that he didn’t care. And the big red L for Liar would’ve practically flashed on his forehead. There were people here who mattered and contrary to popular belief, he gave enough of a damn not to want to achieve what he’d once hoped for. If this was the end then he didn’t want them all to destroy their lives in an effort to keep the Damon Salvatore most had hated on at least one occasion alive. Save his ass, maybe he was willing to let that happen, but not at the ultimate cost.
Trying to convince Claire of that was going down as well as convincing her at the Grill that he wasn’t worth half as much as she thought he was. He could bash her over the head repeatedly with the idea but she never listened. The chuckle that had threatened to emerge burned in Damon’s chest as he rolled his own eyes. ”You chose to be and that means you want to be here. I won’t be much longer so don’t let me be the reason you have to leave here.” There, for once Damon Salvatore was putting someone else ahead of himself. He’d have said that he would’ve convinced Liz for her but he wasn’t kidding himself enough to think he’d be around to do that. Without Stefan somehow talking Niklaus into offering up a cure he was dead. That meant he didn’t need to make the call, he didn’t need to put all of this on to Stefan. ”I start calling and he does something stupid,” he said darkly. ”You know Stefan, he can’t help playing the hero.” And the someone else would need to out hero the hero, Alaric or Elena or even little Skye trying to rescue Stefan. The laugh rattled faintly in Damon’s lungs as he closed his eyes to avoid the inevitable spread of the poison. ”I keep telling you I’m a realist. I look for the worst in people, then I’m never disappointed. If this goes bad Stefan’s not going to have me, and Elena and the others, they’re kids.” The way he’d figured it in his head was the only way to make sure people were safe after this crap eventually reached his heart. Claire couldn’t let his swan song go, she was fighting for him the way she always had. ”It had to happen eventually. Believe me, this is the best way. Just … let him be for now. Don’t force his hand.” It was forced enough as it was. When she’d first arrived in town the hand on Claire’s leg would’ve been his attempt to push things beyond the line they’d drawn, now it was his way of finding an anchor. Damon let his eyes close again as he hand settled atop his. ”Not giving in,” he promised, his lips curving faintly. ”Just figured I’d get one last chance to step over the line and cop a feel here. Throw a dying vampire a bone here?” Or even just let him continue to act like this was just one more big joke. It was the seriousness that would kill him here.

Finding out that Stefan and Damon were both living in Mystic Falls had been a bonus as far as Claire was concerned, when she had moved to town it had been with the sole purpose of finding somewhere that she could settle down and put down some roots for a while without having to hide what she was all of the time but she had never thought that she would end up running into her oldest friends. It had taken her a while to see it at first as she had been nervous about how they would react to the fact that she had ended up being turned into a vampire even though she had always made it clear that she hadn’t wanted her life to turn out that way but instead of judging they had accepted her for who she was and she was glad that they knew the truth. For the first time in what felt like a long time she had people around her who knew the truth about who and what she was and even though she had to hide it from most people that she worked with and some might see it as tempting fate considering that she was working on the police force that was being run by a member of the Founder’s Council it was good in a way as it meant that she was able to keep an eye on things and no matter what happened she knew that she could always trust Ares to have her back the same way that she would always have his. When it came to the Salvatore brothers Claire knew that she would always be there for them too. They had a long and complicated history together but what it came down to was that they were the closest thing to family that she had and she knew that she would do whatever she had to in order to keep them safe. Back in London that had involved killing her own sister when Violet had given in to her Ripper side and turned her humanity off completely resulting in her nearly killing Stefan and now it seemed that she was going to have to make sure that Damon made it through his werewolf bite. How she was going to do that she had no idea but she was certain that it wasn’t going to happen without Stefan’s help. Still, she knew that she needed to stay positive and even if it meant sneaking out to make a phone call while Damon was asleep she knew that she would do it. As Damon spoke she couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t be so stupid. I’m not going anywhere and neither are you,” she assured him, hoping that if she said those words enough then they would start to feel like the truth. She refused to give up on him, she just couldn’t do it. “You came to find me so you obviously don’t want to be on your own and I could never leave you in this state. Whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me so get used to it.” The two of them had bickered a lot even when she was human and that hadn’t changed but when it came to Damon she couldn’t turn her back on him and the sooner he realised that and stopped trying to make her the better as far as she was concerned. They were both stubborn and in this she knew that she wasn’t going to back down. “He’s your brother, of course he’ll do whatever he can to save you,” she said, knowing that was exactly what had happened while they were in London. “That’s what siblings do Damon, they look out for one another.” She knew that it hadn’t always been that way for him and Stefan since they were turned but they seemed to be in a much better place in their relationship now and even if they weren’t she was certain that Stefan would do whatever he had to. “They’re not that much older than Violet and I were when we met so give them some credit.” Even though Elena and the others were young they had clearly already been through a lot and she trusted them to be there for Stefan. “Besides, he also has me and he’ll have you too because you’re going to make it through this.” She didn’t care how many times she had to say it; she was determined to make Damon believe it. “I’m not going to force his hand but he deserves to know. I’m sure you would want to be afforded the same courtesy if he was the one suffering from the werewolf bite,” she said as she pulled the car onto the drive that would lead up towards the Boarding House. As he spoke again a smile touched her lips. “And here I was thinking I was strictly in the friend zone,” she teased, knowing that she had to play along for him. DAMON SALVATORE

Death had come calling finally. Considering the grim reaper should’ve gotten his hands on him over a century ago Damon knew he shouldn’t have been surprised. Turning had cheated the death Giuseppe had tried to deal out to his boys and each day since had been salt in nature’s wound. The thing he’d been turned into was unnatural, a curse unleashed on the world by Esther Mikaelson. Nature had tried to undo that wrong in every way it knew how, leaving them always starving for blood, searing them with the light of the sun. He’d managed to survive both, had survived hunters, every damn person he’d pissed off and ended up wanting to kill him too, but Damon doubted he was going to survive what Niklaus Mikaelson had done to him. That shadow was waiting in the corner of his eye, scythe and all, ready to cart him off to the other side. Damon felt the urge to laugh bubbling up inside of him. An afterlife of punishment. Just as things were beginning to settle in the town, as he was getting over Katherine, moving on in a way he probably should’ve done that century ago, he was gonna be torn away, forced to watch it all carry on without him. Stefan would be free to live the life he should’ve done, the Scooby gang might finally be free of what the two of them had brought to this town and Claire …
Damon shifted in his seat, studying her profile, letting the sound of her laughter wash over him. Would she stay here, working for someone who’d kill her if they found out what she was? Would she move on entirely, without a thought of him in her mind? It’d been almost a century between London and her appearance in Mystic Falls but she hadn’t forgotten them in that time. Another century could pass, he thought, and he’d still be playing through her mind … as he watched her from the other side. It was damn morbid but it was the truth. ”Not being stupid,” Damon said, with a grim trace of humour to his voice. ”I’m being a realist, it’s about time you started being one too Nightingale.” It was a black sort of realism, grim as hell, but it was all Damon thought he could manage right now. As it had descended he had come to one of the only two people he knew wouldn’t have abandoned him. ”Both of you are thick skulled idiots who don’t know when to quit.”
Damon let his head loll against the seat, feeling the poison burn its way up his arm. It was bitter on his tongue now, his mouth pursing with the taste of it. ”He won’t quit, he’ll go playing hero and he’ll get himself killed to save me … or worse.” Claire had killed her sister to save him, had sacrificed her sibling and that still ate away at a part of him. Enough people had sacrificed themselves for him, it was time for it to stop. ”They’re old enough to make their own decisions and young enough to be stupid enough to make the wrong ones. I want to keep them out of it, all of them and you’re gonna help me do that. You’re gonna help him.” Damon wasn’t gonna argue about him surviving this anymore, he’d made his peace with that. The shaking hand went up, cutting off Claire’s words. ”I’m not him. I wouldn’t go falling on my sword or playing toadie for a psychopath to make sure he survived.” No, he’d do worse and would probably get half the town killed in the process. Realist Damon knew himself all too well. Realist Damon hadn’t lost his sense of humour though, trying to use it to distract. The hand on her leg had been different, that wasn’t just a way of stopping Claire in her tracks, there’d been an honesty to it that rang in his snort of laughter now. ”You honestly think I have one of those?” he asked. ”Even if I did, you wouldn’t be. There’s always been an undercurrent, feels like it grew into a rip tide now though…” Damon turned his hand over, noting the faint tremor to his fingers as he did so, entangling his fingers with hers as he stared down at them. He certainly had great timing.

Claire had no idea how she was going to help Damon but she knew that she had to. She had already lost Violet, dead by her own hand when her sister had tried to kill Stefan, and she had already been forced to leave her husband and children behind. Damon and Stefan were the last connection to her human life that she had left but deep down she knew that it was more than that when it came to Damon. He and Stefan were as good as family to her but there had always been something else there with Damon on her part at least. The two of them had always bickered and more often than not they didn’t see eye to eye but they both knew what it was like to be the older sibling and want to do right by a younger one and that was something that she had always enjoyed being able to share with someone. She knew that Damon and Stefan had had their differences as well, that had been clear to her during their time together in London, but when push came to shove no matter what was going on between them they would still die for one another and she could see that hadn’t changed. Claire didn’t want to lose Damon, not so soon after finding him again, and she knew that Stefan wouldn’t want to either. Damon might have done some awful things over the years but at the end of the day none of their hands were clean and she knew that he didn’t deserve to die now anymore than he had back in London when she and Stefan had done everything they could to save him. As Damon said she and Stefan were idiots who didn’t know when to quit, Claire felt a smile touch her lips. “You’re right, we are but I think that is why you came to find me today. You didn’t want to be alone and you knew I wouldn’t give up on you. If you had really wanted to slip away you wouldn’t have told me what was going on with you,” she said, knowing that at least part of what she had said was true. She hadn’t given up on Damon before and she knew that she certainly wasn’t going to start now when he needed her the most. As he spoke again, she nodded. “You’re right, I am going to help Stefan but I’m not going to keep him in the dark. He deserves to know and if you won’t tell him then you leave me with no choice,” she said, her tone hopefully enough to make him see that she wasn’t going to argue with him about that point any longer. She knew that she would never be able to forgive herself if she kept the truth from Stefan and she was pretty sure that he wouldn’t forgive her either even if it was what Damon wanted. Damon’s next words were enough to draw a laugh from her and she patted his hand gently. “You keep telling yourself that but I saw how you were in London, you would do anything for him,” she grinned. Even back then when the two of them had seemed to disagree on everything she had been able to see that they would still die for each other and she knew that hadn’t changed now no matter how much Damon might argue that it had. They had gone up against Henry and Samuel together and she didn’t doubt that they would do it again if they had to. “That’s a good point,” Claire admitted as Damon asked if she honestly thought he had a friend zone. Ever since they met there had been a spark but until now she hadn’t for one moment thought that he had felt it too. “You know, you really have lousy timing Damon,” she teased, giving his hand a gentle squeeze as he linked their fingers together. For a moment she was tempted to lean over and kiss him in case she didn’t get the chance to later but she knew that would mean giving in and she refused to do that. “Come on, we’d better get you inside,” she said instead, forcing a smile before getting out of the car and making her way around to the passenger side door and opening it. “It doesn’t sound like anyone else is home,” she added, listening for movement inside the house for a moment before taking his hand in hers once more. “Can you walk?”DAMON SALVATORE

Some would’ve called this just desserts. After years of wrecking the lives of just about everybody who crossed his path, someone bigger and badder than him had finally knocked him on his ass. Damon figured it was bound to have happened eventually but here, now? He hadn’t seen that coming until Klaus had decided to pull the former best friend card with his little bro. Telling the guy to keep his hands off of his brother hadn’t exactly worked as well as he’d hoped, all the wise minds around him would’ve told him it never would’ve worked, but he’d never been one to take advice. Not when he could try and give it instead. Snarky words had been exchanged and instead of finishing the argument with his big boy words, Niklaus Mikaelson had taken a lump out of him like a two year old with personal space issues. The guy had poisoned him, guaranteed that he’d be able to steal Stefan and do just what Giuseppe had tried a century and a half ago. He’d put Damon Salvatore in his grave. Klaus had crappy timing. If he’d arrived just after Katherine had pulled off her big reveal he might’ve actually begged the guy to do it and put him out of his broken hearted misery. Fate couldn’t have let that happen though, it’d waited until he’d started getting back on his feet, until things with Stefan had finally been non-antagonistic, until he’d begun to maybe move on from Katherine after spending over a hundred years yearning for her like a love sick little puppy.
Eyes on the side of Claire’s face Damon wanted to laugh off her words and tell her he’d just wanted someone to stop him from getting out and slaughtering half the town but that was something Claire would’ve immediately called bull crap on. If that was all he wanted someone for he’d have called Alaric, would’ve convinced one of his best friends to use one of those stakes he’d kept his name on for years. He’d come to her instead and her words had his throat working as he shook his head. ”You’re reading too much into it again,” he warned, shaking his head as he glanced away. ”I’m not a old sick dog, I wouldn’t have just slipped away to die alone. I needed a ride and you were the one person I knew would give it to me without making me jump through hoops.” Lies, lies, lies. The words echoed in his ears. Damon waved a hand in the air, shooing them off. It would’ve been great if he’d been able to shoo away Claire’s determination the same way. ”Can I borrow your phone?” he asked sweetly, both of them knowing the only thing he’d do was throw it out the window to stop her following through on her threat. Damon looked down at her fingers, flexing his jaw. He might’ve promised to make Stefan’s life an eternal misery but that was his to do, not anybody else’s. He’d sworn off of taking that sort of step with Claire too but Niklaus had put a clock on that too. No matter how much he joked about it now, there’d always been a current of something there. Mouth curving, Damon tipped his head back as Claire called him on his lousy timing. ”Always did have it,” he admitted on a long breath. Always a dollar short and a day too late. He let his eyes slip shut when Claire drew away and climbed out of the car, only opening them when she was on his side, playing human detector on the house and taking his hand. ”Good, they don’t need to see this. If I say no are you gonna throw me over your shoulder and drag me inside?” Humour curved his mouth but the blue eyes above were far too serious. Could he walk? Not all that well anymore. Levering himself out of the car Damon slung an arm around her shoulder, leaning into her as he took a shaky step away from the car.

When Claire had returned to Mystic Falls she hadn’t for one moment thought that she would find Stefan and Damon while she was there but she couldn’t deny that even though she had been a little apprehensive about seeing them again at first she had quickly come to realise that it was one of the best things that could have happened to her. For far too long she had been alone, albeit isolated through the decisions that she alone had made, and being around them again had made her see that she had been wasting her life away. She had furthered her education and gone through the police academy but ever since she became a vampire something had been holding her back from really living her life and it was only when she reunited with the two of them that she had come to truly realise it. Even back in London when their lives had been in danger constantly she had still known how to live each day as if it was her last but something had changed in her after that. She had travelled to America hoping for a fresh start after Violet died and she had found that with her husband but the happiness she should have had with him and with her children had been taken from her the day that Lord Ainsley had caught up with her and turned her into a vampire. Deep down she knew that it had been guilt that had been holding her back all that time, she had been forced to leave her husband and children to live out the rest of their lives without her because her past had caught up with her, a past that she had always wanted to protect them from, and even though they had gone on with their lives without her after she had compelled them to believe that she had died and move on she had felt guilty doing the same. Now that guilt was gone and she was free to live her life to the full once more and she wanted to make the most of the time she had with the people she cared about. Being a vampire didn’t guarantee true immortality, they could all still be killed the same way she had killed her sister to protect Stefan and the same way she had killed Lord Ainsley to protect her family but that was where the killing had ended with her. She hadn’t wanted to lose sight of who she was so she had always refused to drink from humans, instead choosing the animal diet to sustain her, and she had been doing her best to keep an eye out for her friends but now Damon was suffering from a werewolf bite and despite the confidence that she had been doing everything in her power to keep up she couldn’t deny that she was scared. There had been something different between the two of them right from the start, even back in London there had been a spark but it was one that she had done her best to ignore. Now her heart ached at the thought of the world without him in it and she knew she had to do everything in her power to make sure that didn’t happen, even if that meant telling Stefan what was going on. It was clear to her that even though Damon acted like he had given up he still wanted someone there and she knew that she wasn’t going to let him stop fighting. “We both know that’s a lie. If you hadn’t wanted anyone to know you would have called a cab to take you home or wherever else you wanted to go. You didn’t want to be alone, Damon, and I’m going to make sure that you’re not,” she assured him as she drove the two of them towards the Boarding House. If he had wanted to then she knew that he would have found a way to get home on his own and he could have easily called Ric or one of the others to pick him up but he hadn’t, instead he had gone to the station to seek her out and in her book that meant something no matter how much he protested. As he asked to borrow her phone she couldn’t help but laugh. “Not a chance. Use your own.” She knew Damon well enough to know that he just wanted to get rid of it so that she couldn’t contact Stefan and she knew better than to fall for that trick. Catching sight of Damon looking down at their joined hands out of the corner of her eye, Claire gave his hand a gentle squeeze. No matter how scared she was she refused to give up on him and as soon as she could she knew that she was going to call Stefan and let him know what was going on. As Damon spoke again, a smile touched Claire’s lips. “Well, now you’re definitely going to have to live so you can make up for that,” she said, the smile still on her face as she looked over at him. Whatever this was between them a part of her wanted to figure that out but she knew the only way that could happen was if they found a way to get Damon through this. It wasn’t long before she was out of the car once they reached the Boarding House and her smile returned at his question. “You know I will and I won’t let you live it down either,” she assured him. Instead Damon climbed out of the car and Claire looped her arm around him as his arm moved around her shoulders, making sure to bear as much of his weight as he would let her. “You’ve got this. Just take it one step at a time.”DAMON SALVATORE

If there was one way to convince Stefan to go full Thelma and Louise without bringing Elena into things it would’ve been this. Feeling the poison slowly burning its way up his arm, in search of his heart and brain, Damon knew that one look at him, one call from Claire, would have Stefan throwing away any chance of freedom from Niklaus he had. And the Original asshole knew it. It was why he’d made the call, why he’d gone and bitten him instead of merely extending the hand of ‘friendship’ to Stefan. Hot headed moron that he was he’d walked right into the trap and had given Niklaus just what he’d wanted. Staggering off into the woods like a sick old dog to hide and die alone would’ve rubbed the whole thing in Niklaus’ face but when the time had come he hadn’t done it. He’d come to her. One of the only people to have remained under his skin for more than five minutes. The one he’d let get away back then all because of Katherine and the lasso she’d had around his heart. This probably wasn’t fair, forcing her to watch him slowly lose his mind and die but when it came down to it, Damon knew he couldn’t do this on his own. And she knew it too. Leave it to Claire to get to the crux of the matter with the least possible glossing over of the bull crap that usually spouted from his lips and was believed by almost everybody else. Blunt human teeth sinking into the tip of his tongue, Damon tried for a smirk, maybe managed something approaching a smile. ”I’m gonna start calling you my little Miner Bird. You always think you’re digging through my layers of lies and distractions and getting at something a little more honest beneath.” And in this case she had, not that he was ready to admit it yet. A part of him was scared enough of all of this not to want to suffer his way through it alone and maybe some part of him thought she’d find a way out of this for him.
He just wasn’t planning on it involving Stefan getting the phone call to tell him he had just two choices, let his big brother die the death he’d denied him over a hundred years ago or give up his freedom and sanity for his brother’s life. To him there didn’t seem like there’d be any choice. Knowing he wasn’t gonna get anywhere Damon asked for Claire’s phone. His throat working, Damon shrugged. ”Mine’s out in the woods. I didn’t go down without a fight and poof, somewhere in that the phone disappeared.” Right into the back pocket of his jeans, where it would stay if he had his way about it while hers took a little trip. Like everything else she was refusing to play his little game. Claire was giving him what he needed, not what he was saying he wanted and a part of him was so damn glad for it that his throat felt thick. He swallowed again, almost sure he could taste the bitterness of the poison as she squeezed his hand. ”You always were an optimist,” he managed dryly. If he got through this he was gonna have to do something way more than make up for a couple of life times of crappy timing and tossing everything away for a woman who didn’t deserve him. ”Now you’re just tempting me,” Damon admitted wickedly. ”You always did make me weak at the knees Nurse Nightingale.” He wasn’t entirely kidding about that now, the trip had been short but he was already feeling that bit weaker for it. One step at a time, more of his weight on Claire than he usually would’ve allowed, Damon staggered towards the house. ”You always did manage to see me at my worst too. One of these days I should’ve got all prettied up you, showed you the best Mystic Falls had to offer.” Which admitted wasn’t much, but it was better than this, better than watching him die.
