With his t-shirt pasted to his back and his lungs burning with each gasp of air Riley emerged from the woods at the edge of the property his dad had rented on the outskirts of Mystic Falls. He’d headed out of the clearing in the opposite direction two hours before, his nerves buzzing beneath his skin, his mind desperate for any way to avoid thinking. Waking up that morning he’d sat on the edge of his bed, his gaze pointedly on the dark screen of his phone instead of on the view out of his bedroom window. An empty drive way leading out towards the road, the early morning sun glinting on the pieces of glass and shreds of torn body work he’d missed in his clean up. Swallowing hard he’d held his thumb an inch above the screen, his mind screaming at him to just dial Danny’s number. He wasn’t alone in this now, Danny had made it clear the day they’d reunited. His parents might’ve pretty much abandoned him, too caught up in their own little world to give a damn that he’d changed, too oblivious to see the results of their constant absence. Danny hadn’t though, he’d been there to pull him out of school, to hand him not only one life line but two. The urge had been there to call Scott too, to confess, to ask for the help he knew he still desperately needed yesterday. Dropping the phone back on the bedside cabinet instead he’d gone to get dressed, to run that anxiety out of his mind and his body.
The resolve to calm himself before he contacted either of them lasted as far as the Falls. Running full pelt through the woods, long legs pistoning, lungs straining, Riley had managed to get his thoughts in order. Danny. He had to call him first and explain what he’d done. Keeping things to himself had led to the situation at the school on his first day, doing it again now would only make things worse. Out there, cooling down under the mist of the, Riley had finally dialled, leaving a voicemail to ask Danny to come over in an hour. It would give him time to get back to the house, to work out he was going to explain the meltdown in his mind. The weight on his shoulders felt halved on the way back, his mind whiting out to the music playing through his headphones rather than racing through that red and black blur. Reaching up now Riley thumbed off his phone, tucking it back in the holster around his arm as he slowed to walk over to the porch. The driveway was still empty, the hole the truck and its destruction had left yawning both in front of him and in his chest. Sinking down on the stairs, Riley bowed his head, resting his elbows on his knees as he waited for his breathing to settle. It didn’t though, with each moment out there his heart rate began to pick up again. Hands shaking, sweat continuing to pour down his spine, Riley began to pace. Back and forth, back and forth, Nikes scuffing on the worn boards of the porch until he heard the growl of an engine a mile away. He swallowed hard as the car turned onto the drive, feet carrying him automatically down the stairs as the engine shut off, as he caught sight of the one guy who’d helped him keep all this at bay. ”I’m glad you’re here,” he managed before he dropped heavily to his knees in front of the shorter man. Fingers fumbled for a hand as he leaned forward, forehead pressed to Danny’s chest, ears ringing with the slow reassuring beat of Danny’s heart.

From the moment Danny arrived in Mystic Falls he had known that the town wasn’t that different to Beacon Hills. Members of the supernatural world seemed to be drawn to both places and the rational part of Danny knew that it would be much safer to get as far away from there as possible but he had moved to Mystic Falls for one reason only and that was to help Scott and the gang and that was something that he was determined to do. Allison was now free from the demon that had been possessing her and she had woken up from the coma she had fallen into afterwards but something told him that the danger was far from over. Ever since the start of the summer he had been learning as much as he could about the supernatural so that he could try and make sure that no other innocent lives were lost and what he had learned had come in pretty handy so far but deep down he couldn’t help but wonder if it was ever going to be enough. There was always going to be something dangerous out there and he and his friends were always going to find themselves right in the middle of it but he knew that as long as they didn’t suffer any more losses like they had when Allison and Aiden died then that was an achievement. There seemed to be forces at work in Mystic Falls covering up any signs of the supernatural at the moment but they were still there for those who knew to look for them. That day Danny had been doing some digging trying to find out if the demon that had been possessing Allison, Myra, was still in Mystic Falls somewhere laying low but so far he had yet to find anything that would indicate that was the case. The voicemail he had received earlier that day had worried him since Riley had sounded quite upset but he had asked if he could head over in an hour and it was an agonising wait for that hour to pass. Finally it did and Danny jumped into his car and headed straight over to Riley’s. Before he had even reached the house Riley was walking towards him and Danny couldn’t deny that he was surprised as Riley fell to his knees and pressed his forehead to his chest. Without even thinking about it Danny wrapped his arms around Riley and held him tightly. “What is it Riley, what’s wrong?” he asked gently as he looked down at the boy, his voice laced with concern as he spoke. With a mom that’d walked out the door practically the moment he’d been born and a dad who’d mentally checked out of reality right about the time he’d been heading into kindergarten it was no wonder he’d gotten used to standing on his own two feet. By the time he’d headed into middle school he’d been handling all the cooking, the shopping, had paid the bills with the money his dad distractedly pushed towards him. The only time there’d been any sign that his dad was taking charge was when the switch was flipped and suddenly they were heading somewhere new. Any trouble that came up Riley handled it himself, apologising to teachers for the lack of involvement from his parents, fixing up the places they’d been living, the dead light bulbs, the TV that’d only found a half dozen channels of static. His mom flitted in and out as she chose, occasionally barely managing a half dozen words for him in the week she’d spend holed up with his dad while he got himself to school, got dinner cooked and his dad’s latest draft out to his publisher. By now he knew he should’ve been used to it but what had just felt normal when he’d been 11 had grown more and more frustrating over the years, building until that thing had bitten him in Oregon. It’d been like the teeth that’d pierced his neck had made more than blood well from the wound. All the poison that’d been building in him until then he erupted from the well head inside of him, spilling forth with all the fear, all the frustration. A single phone call from his dad had sent it spewing out three times now, claws growing, eyes flashing, the ringing in his ears as he’d torn apart his dad’s truck. It was early days, he knew that, but he’d hoped that by now control would at least be something he could get a slippery grip on.
If today was anything to go by control was still out of his reach. All it had taken was the thought of admitting what he’d done to someone other than the mechanic who’d recognised the damage to ramp his pulse up, to start the change. By the time Danny reached the house his lungs were heaving, his knees going weak before he dropped onto them on the gravel of the drive. Riley’s eyes fluttered shut as he sucked in a long breath. He felt Danny’s arms go around him, pressing him tighter to him, making the thud of Danny’s heart louder in his ears. For a moment he remained like that, his breathing settling, his heart beat slowing to match Danny’s. By the time he lifted his head to meet Danny’s eye he had enough control back to feel the guilt start to burn. ”I screwed up,” he admitted hoarsely as he began to push his way back to his feet. A frown was already creasing his brow when he bent to brush the grass, the gravel from his bare legs. ”Yesterday. I should’ve called you the minute he called again but it happened so quickly. One minute I was sitting there, telling myself to breath slowly and the next minute … it was trashed.” Letting out a groan at the memory of it, Riley began to pace again, covering his face with his hands for a moment. ”You ever hear of a werewolf tearing a car to pieces?” he asked as he let his hands fall away from his face. Saying it aloud made it sound ridiculous to his own ears. It was like he’d lost any of the restraint that had come with growing up. He felt like a foot stomping three year old, the kind he’d never been, throwing a strop every time something didn’t go the way he wanted it to.

A year ago life had seemed simple, Danny had been quite happy staying out of the supernatural drama that was going on in Beacon Hills and he had instead been able to focus on keeping his grades up, playing lacrosse and learning his parts for band practice. He knew that he could have let it stay that way but at the end of the day he also knew that in doing so he would have been denying a part of himself. His parents hadn’t wanted anything to do with the supernatural world and they hadn’t even believed everything that their own parents had spent years trying to tell them. Instead they had dismissed it as craziness and had moved on with their lives. He knew that that decision was up to them but even when he had let everyone around him believe that he was oblivious to what was really going on he had still found himself pulled into that world. Jackson had insisted on getting the Bite from Derek but instead of becoming a werewolf he had transformed into a Kanima, Ethan was a werewolf and even Stiles had enlisted his help on occasion. It had been easy pretending that he knew nothing about what was really going on but that had never been who Danny was. He had always prided himself on being open and honest with people so eventually he had sought to do just that after learning everything that he could from his grandparents that summer. Both Allison and Aiden had lost their lives and after that he had promised himself that he would do everything he could in order to make sure that no one else got hurt and that was a promise that he intended on sticking to. That day had been a pretty normal one until now but Riley’s voicemail had concerned the teenager and the moment he arrived he had realised that he was right to be concerned. Something was going on with Riley and there wasn’t a doubt in Danny’s mind that he would help if he could. Even if they were perfect strangers he still would have done what he could but the two of them had connected over the summer and that was enough to make Danny more determined than ever to help Riley. He cared about the guy and he couldn’t begin to imagine what he must be going through right now but he had managed to ground the boy once and he knew that he had to try and do so again. Eventually Riley’s breathing began to slow and Danny felt relief flood through him. As he said he had screwed up, Danny’s expression softened. “It’s ok, just tell me what happened,” he said, his smile kind as he looked over at Riley. Soon enough Riley was doing just that and as he asked if he had ever heard of a werewolf tearing a car to pieces he couldn’t help but laugh. “Actually I have, you never saw my home town,” he chuckled before moving in front of Riley in the hope that he would stop his pacing. “You’re still new at this, give yourself a break. You’ll learn to control this but until then there might be a few slip ups along the way and that is fine,” he said, his expression turning serious as he looked over at him. “What happened with your dad?”RILEY PARKER

Emotion had always had the ability to choke him up, to have him almost spitting out his disappointment or filling up with some sort of poisonous festering wound. Riley had always forced himself to move past it though, to swallow it down or just let go of it when it became clear that no matter how hard he wished, his parents weren’t going to change. It was useless to hold on to it, to think that letting it all fly at them was going to do him any good. By now it was clear that nothing was ever going to change their behaviour. Him getting top grades didn’t merit so much as a pat on the head or a well done, spending every day out of the house in Hawaii hadn’t earned any sort of comment from his dad and the worst thing he’d ever done, breaking a kid’s arm in anger, had resulted in one single argument and a move, one that his dad had already moved on from. If he wanted things to change Riley knew it would be down to him. He didn’t want to be the guy who was found outside with his bare ass hanging out in the wind and he sure as hell didn’t want to be the guy who was so torn up by what he’d done that he’d had to run a dozen miles to stop him from turning again. Holding on to Danny, letting the slow thud of his heart reverberate through his head, through his own rib cage, Riley knew he would’ve struggled right then to say he didn’t want to be the guy who had to hold on to the guy he’d fallen for like a five year old clinging on to his mom’s apron at the first pang of fear.
Clinging was what he’d been doing until he’d finally calmed enough to find his voice. Riley forced his grip on Danny’s shirt to loosen as he looked up to meet his eye finally. That was when the guilt crashed back in. It would’ve been easy to it push his heart to race again but Riley shoved it back, held his heart to Danny’s pulse rate as he got to his feet. ”You’ll get a kick out of the end of this story,” he managed grimly before he began to pace, before the story began to pour from his mouth. Danny’s laughter was the last response he’d expected and between the sound of it and Danny stepping in front of him Riley stopped, brows raised. ”I’ve got a feeling your home town would scare the pants off of me,” he said dryly. Blowing out a long breath, Riley hung his head. One hand reached out, settling on Danny’s bicep for a moment as he squeezed his arm in silent gratitude. ”Sawyer told me the same thing. I need to stop freaking out over every slip. It makes it worse.” His parents’ behaviour was bad enough at the best of times but his reactions to it now were only making the whole thing a hundred times worse. Stepping back towards the porch where he’d been sitting when Danny had pulled up, Riley towed Danny with him. ”It was more my mom than my dad this time. They’re still together in Raleigh.” Sinking down onto the stairs, Riley let out another long breath, he wasn’t about to let the memory kick his pulse up this time. ”He called to say a couple more days and she was in the background, telling him not to bother updating me. I’d got my outburst out of my system already, I wouldn’t cause any more trouble.” That was what it had been to her, an outburst. She didn’t know him at all if she thought it was something he’d resort to just to get attention from the two of them.

Danny knew that none of what Riley was going through could be easy, he had seen Scott struggle from a distance when he had gone through the same thing and Danny knew that there was only so much that he could to help Riley was he was determined to do his best. He knew that Riley was a good person, he had seen it straight away when they met in Hawaii and he had hated seeing Riley leave when his time on the island came to an end. He had felt sure that they would never see each other again and now here Riley was going through one of the biggest changes that he ever could have gone through and his parents had bailed once more. Riley had been upfront with him from the beginning about just how much his parents seemed to focus on themselves rather than their only son and Danny couldn’t help but feel bad for him about that. His parents didn’t always get things right, they had turned their back on their heritage because they hadn’t believed in it but at the end of the day they always put him first and made sure that he didn’t go without, even going so far as to moving to Mystic Falls with him at his request so that he could help Scott and the others. Riley didn’t have that luxury; he didn’t have parents that he could count on no matter what but if anything that had just made Danny want to be there for him even more. Scott had been doing everything he could to help Riley as well and Danny honestly hoped that between the two of them they were making things at least a little better for the other boy. Even though Riley knew that Danny was aware of the supernatural and he had told him a little about Beacon Hills the day they found each other at school he hadn’t told him everything so he wasn’t at all surprised when Riley seemed to underestimate just how bad things had been in Beacon Hills. There seemed to be an even stronger supernatural presence in Mystic Falls and there were creatures in town that he had never come across while he was in Beacon Hills but at the end of the day it didn’t really matter, Mystic Falls was his home now and Danny was actually pretty glad about that. “It wasn’t so bad. It was a bit of a shock finding out who the werewolves and other creatures in town were to begin with but you got used to it,” he admitted with a shock. He had known that there was something different about Ethan the moment they met but it had taken him a while to learn the truth. Even then he had kept Ethan in the dark until they parted ways but he didn’t need to worry about that with Riley. They had both been honest from the start and for that he was glad. “That sounds like good advice, are you going to take it?” he asked, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Riley. He had mentioned Sawyer once or twice so the name at least was familiar to Danny but he didn’t know him at all otherwise. As he explained what it was that had set him off, Danny found himself nodding. “I’m so sorry,” he said gently. “I take it you still haven’t told them what is going on with you?”RILEY PARKER

When things had first erupted in that cabin in Oregon, when his dad had finally looked him in the eye and had talked to him, the only light at the end of the tunnel had seemed to lead to maybe getting to finish out his high school education in one place. Riley had never imagined his dad would stick around long term, at the very least his publisher would want him to go on another tour. He had expected him to stay put for more than the couple of days it took to unpack though. His first day at school, the first day his dad wasn’t in sight and the man had taken off. It hadn’t seemed it at the time but maybe it was the best thing that could’ve happened. His freaking out at school had drawn Danny’s eye, had drawn the two of them back together. There weren’t many blessings to this wolf thing he could see, apart from being able to instantly heal from most things, but Danny, and by extension Scott, was one of them. Riley had never hoped for much hand holding but he’d gotten it from him through all of this. Danny had helped to start melting the fear away, had begun to fill him in on the other things calling this place home, the things that could be dangerous. What had happened to the truck was proof he had to learn to stand on his own at least a little but Riley knew that no matter what, he would want Danny there by his side, as support, as a friend and maybe ... as something more.
There was a touch of hysteria in Riley’s laugh as it burst out in response to Danny’s words. Danny had always seemed so laid back about things, the sort of tension that ratcheted his own shoulders tight rolling off of the other boy like water off a duck’s bad. Finding out that this whole world was out there, trying to deal with what he was had been one of the worst times in his life, for Danny, discovering it all ‘wasn’t so bad’. He honestly amazed him. ”Doesn’t feel like I’m ever going to get used to this. It’s one step forward and ten back and this is just with me dealing with who I am let alone who everybody else is.” So far, the people he’d encountered who were more than they seemed weren’t that different to him. Scott had gone through what he was struggling through now and despite having become a werewolf a different way, from what he could figure out, Sawyer had too. They were both managing, which meant there was hope for him, even though it didn’t seem it most of the time.
Letting his hand linger on Danny’s arm, Riley looked up and managed to let out another long breath. ”I’m gonna try. I might be better at it when it’s not costing me thousands of dollars to fix.” The money wasn’t half as important as keeping his dad from finding out what had gone on. Eventually his parents might be able to come to terms with what he was but they wouldn’t come to terms with him destroying what they saw as theirs, even if he was the one to drive it most of the time. Shaking his head at Danny’s gentle words, Riley managed a half smile. ”Nope, not planning to any time soon. I need this under control first. I don’t want them to come home and find me laying there bare assed naked.” Glancing ruefully at the spot where Sawyer had found him, Riley tugged up the hem of his t-shirt, used it to wipe his face before he grimaced. ”I should shower before I tell you the rest of this. I reek and maybe being able to douse myself in cold water will stop my pulse from going crazy when I tell you how I tore my dad’s truck to pieces.” Letting his t-shirt drop back down Riley pushed his way to his feet and stepped back towards the house. The heightened senses were a blessing in one way and a nose wrinkling curse in another.

Danny had been through a lot in his life so far but he knew that he hadn’t been through even half as much as Scott and the others had been. He had been there for some of the things they had been through while they were in Beacon Hills, albeit on the sidelines, but now he found himself in the thick of it and he knew it was where he belonged. His parents had tried to talk him out of following them to Mystic Falls but in the end they had realised that it was just something that he’d had to do and not a day went by when he wasn’t glad that he had decided to make the move. After Jackson and Ethan left there hadn’t really been anything keeping him in Beacon Hills any longer and he had thought about graduating early and going off to college but during the summer he had spent in Hawaii learning about the supernatural he had come to the conclusion that he wasn’t in a hurry to grow up too quickly, at least not as far as his education went. He already had enough credits under his belt to graduate but so far since arriving in Mystic Falls he had been able to help save Allison and he had also been able to be there for Riley through what had to be the most difficult time of his life so there was no question in Danny’s mind as to whether or not he had made the right decision. As Riley spoke Danny placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I know you didn’t ask for any of this but the fact is you are a werewolf now so own it, don’t let it control you,” he said fiercely. He knew that Riley was afraid and the truth was that Danny couldn’t blame him but being afraid of what he might do wasn’t going to get him anywhere. He needed to learn to accept it and he had a feeling that only then would Riley really be able to learn to control it rather than letting it control him. “Just try and stay away from the truck next time you get upset,” Danny offered. He hated the situation that Riley’s parents were willing to put their own son through but he knew there wasn’t anything that he could do about that, all he could do was try his best to help Riley through everything he was going through. Ever since they ran into each other again Danny had tried convincing himself that he was helping Riley as a friend but if he was honest there was more to it than that at least on his part. He knew that Riley had enough on his plate without having to worry about that as well, though, so for the time being at least he was doing his best to keep his mouth shut. “I don’t think they’d be too sure what to do with that,” Danny chuckled. He completely understood, he knew that it had taken Scott a while to come clean to his mom and given what Riley’s parents were like finding the right time was likely to be almost impossible. As Riley spoke again Danny nodded. “That sounds like a good idea to me,” he agreed as he fell into step beside Riley as they made their way back towards the house. RILEY PARKER

No matter how many moves he made, how many different schools Riley had walked in to, he’d always gone into them with his head held high. By the time he’d turned sixteen he’d lost count of the number of times he’d been the new kid, how many times he’d had to introduce himself in front of a room full of kids who’d known each other practically since the cradle. He might’ve hidden who his parents were with each move, not coming clean about the fact that they were famous in certain circles or that he was practically invisible to them both, but he’d never hidden who he was. There was no shame over the fact that he was attracted to guys, no attempt to hide it even when there’d been the inevitable snide remarks. Most of the time Riley had shrugged those off, countering with something quippy in a style his mom would’ve taken credit for before he’d carried on just being him. The introduction to Mystic Falls high had been different, the first time in his history of new schools that he’d ducked out before the end of the day, that he’d purposefully hidden who he was away. Standing out in front of his house with Danny’s hand reassuringly on his shoulder, Riley knew that who he had been was now gone. He had to come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t human any more, that a touchy temper and monthly changes were going to be par for the course for him now. Lifting his head, Danny managed a half smile. ”Strut my furry ass stuff and make myself believe that I’m not gonna keep screwing up with this forever,” he said with more certainty to his tone than he really felt. Danny was the third person to tell him as much, at some point he would believe in their words.
Humour pulled at the corners of Riley’s mouth as Danny gave his advice. Whenever he got in the truck from now on he was turning the phone off, removing all temptation from his temperamental inner wolf. ”There’s something to say for not talking on the phone when I’m driving,” he quipped dryly. There was also something to be said for trying to ignore his parents. In their way they probably both thought they were doing their best for him, by putting food on the table, for giving him something to look up to, in reality, Riley knew he couldn’t have asked for worse role models. Thinking of them now, of them finding out what he’d become, Riley let out a long breath. ”My mom would probably ask where the party was,” he said honestly. ”Then she’d probably want to join in on it. It’s the sort of superficial thing that would appeal to her.” She wouldn’t see the deeper troubles and if something did register on her radar then she’d blame it on him acting out again. At least this time acting out had only left him soaked in sweat. Blue eyes narrowed as he led Danny into the house. Heading towards his bedroom, Riley turned, moving backwards as he reached for the hem of his t-shirt again. ”Is that your way of telling me I reek?” he asked. Then he was drawing the t-shirt off over his head, tossing it towards the laundry hamper before he paused just inside his bedroom door, the humour on his face turning towards seriousness. ”I need to find a way to thank you for listening to all of this.” Riley’s voice was huskier this time, as he stretched out a hand to settle it against Danny’s cheek in a move that felt familiar.

Danny knew deep down that he never would have been able to live the life that Riley had had thrust upon him, his parents never seemed to want to stay in one place for too long and rather than putting their son first and thinking about what he really wanted and needed they simply ended up dragging him along for the ride. Just the thought alone was enough to make Danny feel a little angry, during the weeks over the summer that he had started getting to know Riley he had a feeling that he had learned more about the boy than his parents had done in years and since Riley moved to Mystic Falls the two of them had been getting to know each other even more as well. Danny had been doing his best to help Riley come to terms with what he was and learn to control himself, something that he didn’t blame Riley at all for wanting to keep to himself, but he had a feeling that the truth would come out eventually. It had been that way for Scott, his mom had eventually learned the truth and even though it had taken her a while to get her head around everything she had eventually stepped up and had been giving her son the support he had needed ever since. Danny wasn’t too sure whether Riley’s parents would ever do the same thing for their son but he still had hope that there was some good in them somewhere. Until they started putting their son first Danny knew that he was just going to have to make sure that he was there for Riley whenever he needed it instead. He knew that none of this was easy for Riley but at least he wasn’t alone. As Riley spoke, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Something like that, yeah,” he chuckled. “Honestly though, personally I like who you are becoming,” he added sincerely. It was taking time but Riley was slowly starting to gain more confidence and more composure and Danny was proud of him for that. Riley had always seemed to let everything roll right off of him and that was a quality that Danny had always admired so he didn’t doubt that in time Riley would come to terms with this the same way Scott had and then the struggles he was facing now would be a thing of the past. “That probably isn’t the best idea,” Danny agreed, knowing just how easy it would be for Riley’s temper to get the better of him and for something serious to happen as a result. As he explained about how his mom would take the news, Danny found himself nodding. “Unless you shifted in front of her I don’t think she would believe it but then again that would be the same for most people,” he admitted. Learning that someone was a werewolf was something that not a lot of people would be able to deal with, it would be far too easy to brush it off but once a person was shown the truth it was much more difficult to ignore it. As Riley spoke again Danny felt an innocent smile touch his lips. “It might be,” he teased, letting his shoulder rest against the door frame as he watched Riley. The feeling of Riley’s hand against his cheek was he spoke once more was something that Danny hadn’t felt for a long time and if he was honest he hadn’t thought that he would feel it again. It was supposed to be nothing more than a summer romance that should have come to an end the day Riley flew back home but those feelings still lingered and it was that knowledge together with the fluttering in his stomach that had Danny leaning into the touch. “You don’t need to thank me, I promised I would always be here for you and I’m keeping my word,” he assured him. He kept telling himself that he was only helping Riley as a friend but he knew that he was just kidding himself, on his part at least it was so much more than that. RILEY PARKER

Despite his parents and the constant moves Riley had always been proud of the guy he’d been. It could so easily have been different, he could’ve been the person his mom thought he was now but that hadn’t been who he was. Until he’d been bitten he’d never even gotten pissed over the homophobic things he occasionally heard from guys who were obviously struggling with doubts over their own sexuality. The way Riley figured it, they were dealing with enough already and couldn’t do any better. He’d been proud of himself for being able to rise above that but that pride had started to disappear the moment his control had begun to slip. There’d been plenty of things he regretted since then. Letting his father’s unsurprising absence get to him, allowing his mom’s words about him pitching a fit to get attention get to him, wolfing out and destroying the truck and his college fund in one foul swoop. It had seemed like the guy he’d been before, the decent guy who’d always tried to do the right thing, was slipping further away from him. He hadn’t liked who was becoming, had struggled with every moment of it despite people telling him he’d learn control. That person wasn’t him, that weak, scared kid who could see everything slipping away from him, that wasn’t the Riley Parker he’d known and liked.
Hearing that Danny liked the guy he was becoming, hearing him laugh over his own half teasing words, Riley began to see the guy he was becoming in a different light. Maybe there was hope for that Riley Parker. The half-smile softened as a light came back into his eyes. ”You’re a little biased though,” he said, teasing again. Danny was probably the most unbiased guy he’d ever met, willing to give anybody a chance, including a nomad wandering down on to the beach. He needed to give himself a chance now, doing every possible to avoid making the same mistake again. Riley glanced at the truck, knowing he could afford to slip the way he had before, neither the truck or his college fund could take that sort of destruction again. ”No phones,” Riley agreed. ”If they bother calling then they can wait for a response.” Not that they ever seemed to expect one for him, leaving a message in the first place seemed to fulfil their parental duties as they saw them. They didn’t know him, his mom’s words had shown that. They’d been able to drive him to change and run for the woods his wolf saw as a sanctuary. Frowning faintly, not seeing a way to ever get the truth through to them Riley looked at Danny. ”Does Scott’s mom know what he is? Do your parents have a clue about any of this?” Others must have managed this but right now he couldn’t see a way through it for him.
It wasn’t something to worry about now though, he wouldn’t be telling them any time soon. The thought of just telling Danny what he’d done to the truck had been enough to make him tear out into the woods earlier. This time it had been in human form at least but between the pace and the anxiety he’d ended up slicked with sweat. Aware of it he’d drawn Danny inside, stripping as he’d gone. He found himself smirking as he mock narrowed his eyes at Danny. ”Could just be you wanted to see me strip too,” he teased. He’d made the same sort of comment to Sawyer after the mechanic had found him buck naked out on the grass. Embarrassment had given way to something that was almost relief then. He’d known Sawyer’s interest had lain in another direction, even if it hadn’t his own interests had settled on someone during the summer and time and distance hadn’t changed that. Feeling Danny lean in to his touch Riley knew that despite Danny’s assurances he did have to find a way to show how much this meant. His thumb skimmed over Danny’s cheekbone, gratitude in his eyes. ”I really do,” he said hoarsely. ”You’ve gone above and beyond and I can’t believe I’m lucky enough to have you back in my life.” He hoped for it but hopes had never got him anywhere at all before. Riley’s gaze skimmed from the curve of that cheekbone, to Danny’s warm kind eyes, then settled on his mouth. Slowly he eased forward, settling his mouth against Danny’s.
((This was so much better the first time around :/))

While it was true that Danny had never been in Riley’s position himself he had seen the changes that Scott had gone through after he became a werewolf and he had seen changes in Jackson as well. Back then Danny had been more than happy to act ignorant to what was really going on around him and stay out of it as much as possible but now he had made the conscious decision to be there for his friends and that included Riley. If nothing else came of the two of them spending time together he was fine with that he just hated the thought of Riley thinking that he didn’t have anyone he could turn to. Danny had made a promise to the guy that he would always be there for him and it was a promise that he fully intended on sticking to. He knew that Riley’s parents weren’t that interested in what was going on in their son’s life, something that Danny had never understood given how close he was to his own parents, and if they had been paying attention then he didn’t doubt that they would have seen that Riley wasn’t the same guy he had been just a few months ago but Danny meant what he had said when he’d told Riley that he liked the guy he was becoming. Over the summer there had always been something about Riley that he couldn’t stay away from no matter how hard he tried and that was still true now. As he spoke Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Perhaps but after the summer we shared I think I’m allowed to be,” he said, his smile playful as he looked over at Riley. He had seen a side of the guy that he had a feeling that not many got to see and that was something that Danny was glad about. “You’d better stick to that,” Danny added as Riley agreed to no phones while driving. While it was true that Riley would be able to heal from most things the last thing Danny wanted was to have to worry about him getting into an accident because he got too worked up. He knew that Riley’s parents were like, they seemed to have a way of getting under their son’s skin without even meaning to and if something did happen then he didn’t doubt that it would weigh on Riley’s conscience and that was probably the last thing he needed on top of everything else. As Riley asked about their parents, Danny nodded. “Scott’s mom knows the truth, so does Stiles’ dad. Allison’s dad is a hunter so he has known about all of this for a long time and my parents know the truth but they don’t believe it. That’s what I was doing in Hawaii over the summer, I convinced them to let me see my grandparents so they could tell me what they know,” he explained. He had tried to bury his head in the sand the way his parents seemed happy to but he knew that it wasn’t for him. Two people had died while he tried to stay out of it and since learning the truth he had been able to help save Allison so he knew that he was better off being involved. As Riley spoke again Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You caught me,” he chuckled, deciding in that moment to play along. The truth was that Danny liked Riley and even though the two of them were friends he couldn’t deny that he wanted something more than that. Riley was going through so much at the moment that as far as Danny was concerned the last thing he wanted was to end up taking advantage of that. A smile touched Danny’s lips at Riley’s words and he brought his own hand up to cover Riley’s. “I’m lucky too, I hated thinking I was never going to see you again,” he admitted. The connection he felt to Riley was such that he had never experienced it before so he was glad that he got to be in the guy’s presence again. As Riley leaned in slowly Danny couldn’t deny that he was surprised. “Riley,” he breathed but no sooner had the name left his lips than Riley’s lips met his and Danny’s hand found the back of the boy’s neck as he kissed him back. Listening to other parents gush about their kids over the years, Riley had realised that parents were supposed to be biased towards their kids. Love from them was supposed to be unconditional. It wouldn’t matter if their kid was the biggest brat in the class, they still thought their kid was amazing. Time and time again he’d wondered how they’d been blind to what was really in front of them but eventually the truth had dawned and he’d realised that his parents were the odd ones out here. When you truly cared about someone, you were blind to their faults. Riley had found himself always being able to see both sides of a matter though. The person he was looking at would usually want to hide that other side but it hadn’t worked on him that way, not until Hawaii. The entire time he’d been there he’d only seen this amazing guy, the face that seemed ready to smile at any more, the big heart that was obvious to all around, the willing shoulder, the listening ear. Riley had thought he’d put on those blinkers that he’d accused others of wearing before but being apart hadn’t changed the way he’d seen things. Riley thought he should’ve been blushing but at Danny’s laugh he just found himself smiling. What had happened that summer was something more than the summer fling it perhaps could’ve been. ”You’re definitely allowed to be,” he agreed. ”I’m feeling pretty biased too.” Maybe it was that bias that had let him follow Danny’s advice so easily. His Yoda had steered him right every step of the way since he’d dragged him from the school that first day and it was easy to promise to take care with his phone now. ”Cross my heart,” Riley promised, his hand seeking out that damp spot over his heart again. He had to get through what was going on and come out the other side doing better with this wolf thing.
The jury was still out over whether that was going to require him coming clean to his parents. He still didn’t believe that they could handle this but Danny admitted that his parents, Scott’s, Allison’s and Stiles’ all had at least some clue about what was going on he wondered if he was going about this the wrong way. ”It’s a family thing for you?” he asked as Danny filled him in. ”Does it make it easier? Your parents might not believe it but at least they’re aware, that has to make a difference right?” If it didn’t that was one more reason to keep his parents in the dark. This was one thing he wouldn’t hide from the two of them. As much as he didn’t want to hear his mom tease him over it, Riley wasn’t ashamed of what was going on, at having someone who was interested whether he had his shirt on or not. ”Red handed,” Riley added, his smirk growing at the sound of Danny’s laughter. ”I’m not gonna complain about it either.” In a way it eased that tight knot inside of him, the one that had been twisting his guts up when Danny had arrived. Riley knew he didn’t have to thank Danny for helping him, it wasn’t being done with some ulterior motive. Moving closer to the other boy he’d wanted to though, to get out those words that kept sticking in his throat. ”I was thinking the same,” Riley admitted. ”And I didn’t want that to be the end.” Blue eyes caught brown, his heart beat thumping harder and faster in his chest at the sound of his name on Danny’s lips. Then he’d leaned in and done what he’d wanted to since that day at the school. Riley drew the kiss out as he felt Danny’s hand on the back of his neck, relishing in the feel of the other boy’s lips on his again. It was familiar, all he’d wanted for long weeks after they’d flown out. ”I wanted to do that the first day I saw you again but I wasn’t sure … if you still wanted this.” His words were hoarse as rested his forehead against Danny’s, his eyes slipping shut finally.

Danny’s parents didn’t believe anything that their parents had tried telling them when they were growing up but he knew that he was lucky that they were at least supportive. It had taken some convincing to get them to agree to leave Beacon Hills behind so that he could follow the others to Mystic Falls and lend his support but in the end they had realised just how important it was to him to be there for the others and they had found a way to make it work. If they hadn’t then he wasn’t too sure what he would have done, he was close to having enough credits under his belt to be able to graduate a year early if he wanted to so he knew that he could have seen out his Junior year in Beacon Hills before making the move to Mystic Falls but if he had done that then there was a chance that he wouldn’t have been able to see Riley again so he was beyond glad that things had worked out the way they had done. It was only supposed to be a summer romance but the truth was that it had become so much more to Danny and being able to spend time with Riley again away from Hawaii had just confirmed that. He liked the guy more than he probably should and just being his friend was something that Danny was finding to be pretty difficult at the moment but it was something that he knew he had to do if it meant that he got to keep Riley in his life. As Riley spoke Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “You always were when it came to me,” he admitted before nodding as Riley promised not to answer his phone while driving again. They had hit it off so well over the summer that it really was impossible not to be biased towards one another but he knew that he wouldn’t want it any other way. The last thing he wanted was for anything to happen to Riley now so he knew that he just had to hope that he would stick to his promise. As Riley asked if having his family know what was going on made it easier Danny’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Yes and no,” he said at last. “I’m pretty sure my parents think I’m crazy for choosing to get involved in all of this when they’ve fought so hard to break away from the rest of the family and live normal lives but they at least understand that it is my choice and they are supportive. There are times when I wish I could talk to them about what has happened while I’ve been here but I know they wouldn’t believe it even if I tried so it can be frustrating,” he explained. His parents did their best but he knew that they would never understand what he and his friends had to face the same way that his grandparents would. “Good because I’m enjoying the view,” he admitted, a smile touching his lips as Riley said that he wasn’t going to complain about having caught him. Riley was a good looking guy, that was obvious, but Danny had been able to see the real him while they were together both in Hawaii and now in Mystic Falls and it was that guy that he felt such a strong connection to. He had learned quite quickly that looks weren’t everything, he had a couple of exes who were good looking but didn’t have much else going for them and he had quickly realised that guys like that just weren’t his type. Riley was someone he could actually have a decent conversation with, he was someone that Danny genuinely cared about, and that hadn’t changed. “I didn’t either,” Danny admitted as Riley said that he didn’t want the way they left things to be the end. In a way it had felt like they had been robbed of something that could end up being pretty great and since meeting Riley again Danny had found himself hoping that if he was patient enough then they might get another chance. The kiss was unexpected but regardless of what it meant to Riley, Danny knew that he wanted to enjoy it. As the kiss finally broke and Riley spoke once more he felt his smile return and he brought his hand up, letting it rest gently against Riley’s cheek. “You have no idea how much I want this,” he assured him softly. “I haven’t felt like this before but with everything you’ve got going on I didn’t want to feel like I was taking advantage,” he added. Riley was vulnerable at the moment and Danny knew how easy it was to make bad decisions at times like those but he hoped that Riley had meant what he had said. RILEY PARKER

Riley wasn’t embarrassed of the way he’d fallen for Danny. He never had been when he’d had a crush on a guy before and this … it had already felt like more, especially by the time his parents had forced him away and it had felt like he was tearing his heart out just to get on the plane. It wasn’t like him to really go in pursuit of someone but he had in Hawaii and now Danny was teasing him about it, Riley was grinning. ”I was,” he admitted. ”You made it really easy to be. A hot guy who could surf who wasn’t arrogant enough to look past a guy like me. What wasn’t to love about that?” There was a lot he doubted was ever going to be loved about him thanks to his parents. He’d tried to look past their behaviour over the years, had written so much of it off as just them being selfish people but it hadn’t been easy and the thought of opening up to them about what was really going on now was harder still. Riley’s brows drew together as Danny answered his question. If it had been easier without a doubt maybe he could’ve forced those words from his throat but hearing what Danny’s parents were like it remained an impossible dilemma. ”At least they care enough to worry about you going into this, to understand you want to do it,” he said softly. ”If you ever need to talk to anyone about that … I’m here, I can handle it.” Riley knew it might not have seemed that way given the trouble he was having handling what was going on with himself at the moment but he wanted to be there for Danny as much as the other boy was being there for him.
He wasn’t about to argue the light hearted, the flirty, in favour of the serious right now though. Wasn’t about to push away the heat that began to grow beneath skin that had felt clammy when Danny had arrived. Riley felt that heat bank in his stomach as Danny admitted he was enjoying the view. ”That’s why you always to meet at the beach,” he said, as though he’d only just realised what was going on back then. It had never been just the physical though, that was an added bonus to everything else. It had been about what he’d felt for Danny, what had started go grow just as he was being torn away. Riley swallowed hard as he was drawn in like a magnet. ”I begged for another week, even another day.” It had taken months but he’d gotten them and he wasn’t about to pass up the chance they offered. So he’d taken it, kissing Danny, feeling his breath sear his throat as he drew back and Danny settled a hand against his cheek. For a moment his expression was serious, brows drawing together, eyes searching those only an inch from his own but then the cheek was curving beneath Danny’s touch. ”Taking advantage would have been following me in to the shower without me giving you a reason to join me,” Riley managed in a dead-pan voice. He looked down pointedly at his sticky chest pressed against Danny’s. His mouth curved further as he looked back up, a trace of heat in his eyes. ”You never would’ve taken advantage … but I might take it now.” Curling his fingers into the fabric beneath his palm Riley stepped back towards the bathroom, his mouth zoning in on Danny’s again.
