There was a time when Danny had been ashamed of who he was and he had been worried that people would start seeing him differently because of it. Some had but in the end with the support of his friends and family he had realised that he shouldn’t really care about what anyone else thought of him, that as long as he was comfortable in his own skin then that really was all that mattered. That had been the turning point for Danny and the truth was that he hadn’t looked back since. He’d had a few boyfriends over the years and he had also had a few flings. With Riley it should have been nothing more than a summer romance but ever since he left Hawaii the truth was that Danny hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Riley. He had known that it was crazy and that it would only lead to him getting hurt later on down the line considering the chances of their paths crossing again were so slim but now here they were and Danny couldn’t deny that a part of him wondered if fate had intervened and brought them together once more. They had another chance now and even though he wasn’t too sure if anything would happen or even if Riley was still interested it was still good knowing that they at least had the chance to find out. As Riley spoke Danny couldn’t stop a playful smile from touching his lips. “You underestimate yourself, I never could have looked passed you,” he admitted. “Have you seen yourself in the mirror? You’re pretty easy on the eye and you’re a great guy, I was so glad to have you in my life even if it was only for the summer,” he admitted. Even though he had known that any friends he made over the summer he might not get to see again it hadn’t been enough to stop him, nor had it been enough to stop him getting close to Riley and for that he was glad. As Riley spoke again his smile softened. “Thanks, I might just take you up on that offer,” he admitted. He had other friends around him now but that wasn’t something that he liked to bother them with so it was good to know that he had someone else to talk to if he needed it. “That might be one of the reasons, that and you always seemed to enjoy the water and I liked seeing you smile,” he admitted with a shrug. Everything had been so easy back then, he and Riley had connected pretty quickly and they had spent a lot of their time together since then. Now it still felt just like that, he had never felt so strongly for anyone before and he knew that this must be what people meant when they talked about truly falling for someone. “Me too, I saw your plane leave and I spent so long wishing that you hadn’t got on it,” he admitted. He had tried his best to distract himself that day, he had gone surfing with his friends but the moment he heard the plane’s engines he hadn’t been able to stop himself from looking up and the pang in his chest at the thought of Riley leaving wasn’t something that he had been able to easily ignore. Riley’s next words were enough to have Danny rolling his eyes playfully but when their eyes met once more something had changed in the other boy and it was enough to bring a half smile to Danny’s lips. “I won’t object,” he admitted, kissing Riley back as they stepped towards the bathroom. Kissing him once more, Danny’s gaze locked on Riley’s before speaking again. “It might be too soon to say this but screw it, I don’t care. I love you.”RILEY PARKER

It didn’t matter how many straight A’s he bought home, how often teachers praised him or how many new skills he mastered, there’d never been any sort of praise from either of his parents. Lingering in the shadows outside of their spotlight it had felt to him a little like he’d never match up to either of them. Hadn’t been until he’d hit his teens that Riley had realised they were truly incapable of giving that to him. If he’d been failing every class and they’d been called in it might’ve been a different story but he hadn’t wanted to be that sort of kid. His mom had gotten that wrong when she’d whined in the back of the phone call that day. Hearing what Danny thought of him now Riley was more certain of that than ever. He was a good guy, he tried to do the best by his friends and hell, even though his parents didn’t deserve it he’d always taken care of them too. What had gone on in Hawaii had been far more selfish, or at least it had felt that way until Danny smiled at him now. ”There were a dozen better looking guys than me on that beach,” he countered, his cheeks heating. He knew that wasn’t the be and end all for Danny though. He swallowed hard, the grin showing genuine gratitude. ”I was glad to have you too. I’m still glad.” Through it all Danny had been there for him and he wanted to be able to do the same, to offer some of that comfort and support back. ”You better,” Riley warned him, that trace of concern lingering for a moment. He knew that Danny had his parents, Scott and the others around but he wanted to be there for him too.
When he’d first arrived in Hawaii Riley had found the water calling to him, as it always did. His first night on the island he’d slipped down to the beach and had found himself on the periphery of the group of local and visit teens, had found Danny catching his eye. Riley ducked his head slightly for a moment, his mouth curving with nostalgia. ”Being out there made me happy, although it was just as much the company as the surfing. The company was what made me smile.” Without his parents around and the threat of another move, it had been easy to just relax and be him ... right up until that last morning. ”I kept fighting with my dad about it but he didn’t want to listen. I kept hoping they’d at least stay in California for a while so I could take the truck and come to Beacon Hills.” In the end it had been Oregon that they had gone to instead. In Oregon there’d been pain and fear and anger but in the end he’d been led to the very place he’d wanted to be ... with Danny. There was a teasing light in his eye as he dragged Danny back towards the bathroom, the kiss distracting him for a moment before Danny’s words registered. Riley almost stumbled back, his heart leaping into his throat as he was fetched up short against the wall beside the bathroom door. His bare back knocked photos of Hawaii askew but he didn’t feel it, all of his attention was on Danny, on the way his heart pounded in his ears. ”You love me?” he asked hoarsely. Riley blinked, feeling tears burn for a moment. ”No one’s ever told me that before.” He let out a long, shuddering breath, his heart still trying to leap free. ”I love you too.” He’d been sure of it that first day at the High School, as his heart had begun to beat in time with Danny’s.

There were times even now when Danny found himself wishing that his parents might have been a bit more understanding and interested in the supernatural world than they were but at the end of the day they had agreed to move across the country so that he could be there for his friends so he knew that he couldn’t really ask for much more than that. He knew that his parents loved him, that was something that he had never doubted while he was growing up. They had made sure that he had everything that he needed and then some and they had never been as strict as some parents were. That was something that he was grateful about as it had given him the chance to grow and become his own person rather than a mirror image of the two people who had made him but Riley’s parents had taken giving their son space to a whole different level. He knew that things hadn’t been easy for Riley but Danny also knew that if things hadn’t worked out the way they had done then chances were they wouldn’t have ended up together on the beach in Hawaii that summer. The two of them had hit it off better than he had thought possible and a friendship had quickly turned into a summer romance. Danny had hated it when Riley had had to leave with his dad but he had understood although that still hadn’t stopped him from wishing that their paths might cross again one day. He definitely hadn’t thought that things would work out the way they had done now that they were in Mystic Falls with Riley being a werewolf but it didn’t change a thing as far as Danny was concerned. Riley was still the same guy he had known back then and he hoped that nothing would ever change that. As Riley said that there were a dozen guys on the beach that were better looking than he was Danny shook his head. “Not to me there weren’t,” he assured him. “I only ever had eyes for you.” He had found himself being drawn to Riley straight away for some reason and the more time they had spent together the more he had started to see why. He hadn’t gone to the island looking for a summer romance but that was exactly what had found him and now he hoped that it might have the chance to turn into something more. “Me too,” he admitted, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Riley. “I meant what I said that first day at school, you’re stuck with me now,” he added. He and Riley had been forced to part ways once before and he knew that he would do everything he could to make sure that that didn’t happen again. As Riley said it was the company that had made him smile before going on to explain about what had happened with his dad Danny felt his heart race slightly and he gave Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze. “You were really going to come and see me?” he asked, unable to deny that he was surprised. He had thought that he was the only one who had wished that it could have turned into something more that summer but now it seemed like he had been wrong. The next words to leave his lips were ones he had wanted to say to Riley for a long time but he had held off as he hadn’t wanted to make things any more complicated for Riley than they already were. Now he knew he wasn’t the only one to want something to happen between them it had felt right but as Riley stepped back and knocked over a load of photos he knew that perhaps he shouldn’t have said it after all. Before he could even answer Riley’s question he was speaking again and as Riley said that he loved him too, Danny felt his heart skip a beat. “You do?” he asked, needing to make sure he hadn’t imagined it. “You’d better get used to hearing it because I meant it,” he said, his smile returning as he closed the distance between them and kissed Riley once more. This was what he’d always told himself he didn’t want. His mother had always been quick to regale him with the story of how she and his dad had fallen in love after he’d been conceived, had married and stayed together. That had been a point of pride for Maggie, the fact that their marriage had remained strong when so many others had failed, hypocrites no longer having a leg to stand on. The hypocrite in her had never been able to see that her own marriage was a marriage in name only. People truly in love were supposed to welcome that child, supposed to dote on them, but his parents hadn’t and even at the age of 12 Riley had been certain that he’d never put himself in the same position. Nothing serious, not when he couldn’t stay to perhaps work towards something more, a two way relationship, one that didn’t exist completely outside the space-time continuum when it existed at all. That certainty that he didn’t want to be his parents should have guaranteed that he hadn’t let himself be drawn into anything serious in Hawaii but his hormones, his heart, had dictated something else. Danny had been what he’d always wanted but hadn’t known he’d been looking for. A part of him wondered whether being a werewolf would prove the same, something that would make him instead of breaking him, but right now he couldn’t be half as certain of that as he was about his feelings for Danny.
Riley studied Danny’s face as he spoke, looking for some sign that he was just teasing or flattering, as some would have done, over exaggerating things just for flirtation’s sake, but there was none of that there. ”You were biased even then,” he murmured, his smile flashing bashfully for a moment. ”Either that or all that sunshine made you temporarily blind.” It hadn’t been one sided though, anything but. That first day on the beach it had been Danny that he’d watched out on the water, long before he’d had the guts to approach him. ”Does it still count as stuck if I want you there?” he asked, a touch of curiosity in his voice. The need for Danny to be there hadn’t ended when his panic had subsided that day, if anything it had gone from desperation to something less frantic, albeit no less powerful. Riley had felt the pull as he’d boarded the plane to take him to LA, had always planned on following it when he was able. It would’ve led him to Beacon Hills if the alpha in Bear Creek hadn’t waylaid him first. He nodded at Danny’s question, the bashful look still on his face. ”Soon as I could talk my dad into letting me. I thought if he was going to stick with my mom in LA long enough they’d barely notice if I headed out for a week.” His dad hadn’t stayed too long before they’d been on the move again though, heading to Oregon and an encounter with a wolf.
It had felt like a boot in the ribs from fate at the time, but now, being back with Danny, hearing him say he loved him, Riley almost felt like he had to track the alpha down and thank him. He’d given him the opportunity to say the words back, to finally free them from the place they’d been tucked in his heart. Sucking in a breath, one that emerged on a shuddering, half laughed exhale, Riley nodded. ”I do,” he promised. ”I should’ve said it at the school but I didn’t know then if you still wanted this. I didn’t want to trap you anymore than I already was with the wolf stuff.” Riley ignored the rattle of shifting photos again as he kissed Danny back, trying to temper the desire for fierceness with tenderness. He inched back, his eyes still closed as he whispered against Danny’s lips. ”Say it again,” he requested in a whisper. Tightening his fingers in Danny’s shirt, he shifted, leaving the photo of the two of them on the beach hanging askew as he pulled them through the bathroom door.

When his parents agreed to let him go to Hawaii for the summer to see his grandparents Danny had never thought that he would end up finding more than answers about the supernatural world and what had happened to Allison while he was there. In a way getting away for a while had been a well-needed distraction, even though he was the one who had broken up with Ethan and he knew that he had done it for the right reasons that didn’t change the fact that he had cared deeply about him. He knew that Ethan and his brother hadn’t always done the right thing, they had hurt people and they had threatened some of the people that Danny cared about but when it came to him he knew that Ethan had been genuine despite what his motives might have been initially. He had ended their relationship so that Ethan could move on and get over his brother’s death without feeling like he had to stay in Beacon Hills so that they could make a go of things and to this day Danny was certain that he had made the right decision. He had felt sure that spending time with his grandparents, learning what he could from them about the supernatural and getting some surfing in with some of the other guys his age was as good as it was going to get but he couldn’t have been more wrong. Right from the start there had been a connection with Riley, something that was unlike anything he had ever felt before, and he had quickly found himself looking forward to being able to spend time with the other boy. It had turned into a summer romance, a short lived thing that should have ended the day that Riley left Hawaii and returned home, but then they had found themselves in Mystic Falls together and those feelings had not only resurfaced but they had turned into something so much more. To begin with that had scared him since with everything else that Riley had going on he had felt sure that he wouldn’t want to complicate things between them but as it turned out he couldn’t have been more wrong. “Whatever I was, it definitely wasn’t blind,” he chuckled. He had felt attracted to Riley right from the start and that had only increased as they had spent more time together. To begin with a part of him had worried whether it was a rebound thing after what happened with Ethan but he had slowly started to realise that he couldn’t have been more wrong. What he felt for Riley was real and the day his plane had left Hawaii Danny had felt like the boy had taken a piece of him with him so finding him in Mystic Falls was more than he ever could have asked for. “Probably,” he grinned as Riley spoke again before becoming more serious as he went on to say that he was planning on heading to Beacon Hills as soon as he could. “For a while I thought I was the only one who hoped that what happened over the summer could have lasted longer, I’m glad I was wrong,” he admitted as he gave Riley’s hand a gentle squeeze. “It seems too much of a coincidence that we both ended up here, I think we were meant to find each other again,” he added. He had never paid too much attention to it when people talked about fate but had Riley managed to find his way to Beacon Hills then Danny wouldn’t have been there anyway so he liked to think that they had both ended up in Mystic Falls for a reason. As Riley said he didn’t want to trap him anymore than he already had done, Danny shook his head. “You’ve never trapped me,” he assured him. “I helped you at school because I cared about you and I didn’t want you to go through everything you’ve got going on alone. I’ve always wanted this, I’m right where I want to be,” he added sincerely. He knew he never would have turned his back on Riley and he hoped that Riley knew it too. The rattling of photos was enough to bring a smile to Danny’s lips and as Riley asked him to say it again, Danny made sure that his words were slow and deliberate. “I love you,” he said, his lips brushing against Riley’s as he spoke before kicking the bathroom door closed behind them. Riley had become intimately acquainted with the notion of wishful thinking over the years. He’d spent so much of his childhood hoping he would wake up one day to find his mother had decided to give up her career and be a stay at home mother, hoping that his dad would turn down a tour so that they could spend at least half his freshman year in one town. None of it had ever come true, the car had never broken down, his dad’s books had never tumbled down the best seller lists, his mom had never directed a flop. Their lives had carried on the same way they always had, both of them almost seeming as though they were living this blessed existence. No matter how hard he’d dug his heels in they hadn’t changed, hadn’t wanted to. They’d kept the blinkers on, not wanting to believe they’d had nothing to do with him getting perfect grades at his fifth school that year, or see how crestfallen he’d been when they’d boarded that plane out of Honolulu. Staring out of the plane at the water where he was sure Danny was riding another wave, Riley had wished that the plane would suffer some sort of minor fault, the sort that would turn the plane around and keep them on the island for at least one more day. It hadn’t of course, they’d landed safely in Los Angeles, had another uneventful trip to Oregon, where all of his bad luck seemed to hit at once. This was the payoff, Riley told himself as he listened to Danny chuckle over just how well he’d seen, for all that trouble, for the years of desperate wishing, he’d even take the fear over what he could do if it meant he finally had one wish come true.
Heat began to ride high on his cheeks as Danny’s words left him bashful. He’d been attracted to guys before Hawaii, hadn’t been completely inexperienced but none of it had prepared him for something with someone who felt exactly the same way he did. ”I’m glad you weren’t, I’d hate to disappoint you when you got a real look away from all that sunshine,” he teased, his voice low. He’d been hoping to give Danny the chance to take a second look by finding him in Beacon Hills as soon as he had a chance but the opportunity hadn’t been there and they’d had to wait for this. Riley shook his head as Danny squeezed his hand, the smile remaining, even if it was softened slightly. ”You definitely weren’t the only one. I just didn’t have a way to tell you what I was feeling. I guess someone out there decided we both needed this.” Some higher power had guided him and his dad to Mystic Falls and if it was suddenly really feeling benevolent it would keep him here. It would eventually stopping him feeling like he was burdening Danny with what he’d become, it would eventually help him cope. His brows drew together faintly as he studied Danny’s face. ”I felt trapped with it,” he admitted. ”Until you were there letting me out of it by being amazing. I promise, anytime you need to lean on me, I’m going to be here. I want to be here with you.” This time it didn’t matter how hard his dad tried to drag him away, he had claws to hold on with now. He had someone who loved him. Riley smiled against Danny’s lips as they disappeared into the bathroom, the words sending his heart fluttering in his chest as he began to pull Danny’s shirt over his head. They were finally together, no barriers, no deadlines, no end in sight.
