As Damon said she would be breaking hearts through the whole state, Claire rolled her eyes playfully. “I really don’t care about that, the only heart I’m concerned about is yours,” she said, placing her hand over his heart as if to prove her point. She only had eyes for Damon and that wasn’t going to change, there was a time when he had managed to get under her skin so badly that she had wanted to get away from him but now that couldn’t be further from her mind. Something had changed between them and the love that she felt for him was something that she hadn’t expected at all when they met back in London but now it was something that she wouldn’t give up for anything in the world. “Your words, not mine,” she laughed. Things had definitely changed since then, that was for sure. “You won’t hear any arguments from me,” she grinned, leaning forward and pressing her lips gently against his. Now Damon was the only one she could focus on when they were together and he knew it. She knew that he’d had his heart broken before and it had taken him a long time to get over everything that Katherine had put him through but this Damon was so different to the one she had met back in London, this Damon was real and it was the one that she had fallen in love with. “We both know that’s not true,” she said, shaking her head in amusement. “You might have been out of it when you kissed me but after that you had no excuse.” The first time he had been suffering from a werewolf bite but the second time he had been back to normal and he had set up an incredible date for the two of them. Damon knew exactly who she was just like she knew who he was and that brought them together rather than pulling them apart. As Damon leaned in and spoke in her ear, Claire felt a pleasant shiver run down her spine. “In that case I’ll let you in on a little secret too, I’m not going to change my mind either,” she said, her eyes locked on his as she spoke. It had taken her a long time to feel like she deserved to be happy again and it was Damon who had helped her get there. She knew that there were people who might think that one or both of them was crazy but she didn’t care. She wanted to be with Damon and there wasn’t a doubt in her mind or in her heart about that. “It definitely doesn’t hurt,” she agreed, bringing her hands up and smoothing them gently down the front of his tux. Seeing him dressed up like this was enough to make her heart race, that was for sure. “We can’t have that now, can we?” she teased as Damon said his ego wasn’t going to fit through the door if she kept talking like that. As he spoke again, however, she pretended to think about it for a moment. “You say that like it’s a bad thing,” she said at last as she let her hand rest lightly against the back of his neck. “I think that’s the best idea you’ve had all night,” she added, her smile returning as she closed the distance and kissed him, knowing that she needed more than Damon kissing the corner of her mouth this time around. When it’d first been put in Claire’s hands, Damon wasn’t sure that rock in his chest was worth anything. Giuseppe had started to crush it before he’d been old enough to really realise what was happening. Katherine’s grip on it had been light afterwards, something tender after all those years of pain. Oh, what a fool he’d been, Katherine was just as bad as his father, only her nails were sharper, painted talons shredding his feelings so completely he doubted it was possible to have it pieced back together – let alone that he’d want it to be pieced back together. It had been easier letting himself go numb to it, to take out every bit of pain on those around him. Lexi had whined about it, of course, telling him a hundred times over that it wasn’t Stefan’s fault, but at the time who else was there to blame? Katherine hadn’t shown her true colours until later. Now he hoped she’d choke herself on it all.
”It’s in your hands. If it ends up broken again, I know who to blame,” Damon said lightly. The truth was that Claire was the only one he would’ve trusted with it now. Most still hadn’t seen unguarded Damon, the one who was softer at moments like this – and for good reason. Changing their minds wasn’t gonna come with suddenly turning sappy, it was about not continuing to tear their lives to pieces. His hand came up, covered Claire’s on his chest. He snorted lightly, pooching out his lips like he could blow off the thought. ”You were just as bad as I was. It takes two to tango, you know.” Two to fight, two to realise that there was something deeper to all those little spats than either one of them was ready to admit at the time. ”Good,” he murmured into the kiss. He wasn’t delusional to think that this wouldn’t have happened with anybody else, he knew it wouldn’t have done.
Damon snorted again, as though he could deny exactly what had happened after he’d been bitten. Believing he was dying – actually having time to reconsider the choices he’d made – it'd changed things, pushed them towards what he’d never expected to have. ”Maybe,” he drawled lightly. ”It wasn’t like you didn’t have a part in it all though.” He tried for innocent and ended up smirking instead. With the two of them it had always been a push-shove sort of thing. This time they’d just nudged each other into something a lot deeper than the challenging friendship they’d had before. His hands smoothed over her back, feeling that shiver run through her. ”Good, means I’m not gonna have to chase after you any time soon.” Damon’s lips curved faintly as their eyes locked. It wasn’t like he hadn’t done it before, he could be relentless, especially when his heart was involved.
The soft became the smug, although there was tenderness below it still. Damon hummed, one hand trailing to hers to catch them against his chest. It wasn’t like they needed all of this to feel that way about one another, but it certainly sparked it, a match lighting the kindling they’d stacked high. He pressed his lips together, shaking his head. ”Lucky for me, I know someone who’s an expert at keeping it in control.” She’d learned how to do that in London, although those jabs were more seduction than anything now. Keeping the two of them close, Damon started to shuffle them back towards the edge of the floor as Claire agreed with him. ”You’re a bad influence, you know,” he murmured. There was no question to it, Claire knew it just as well as he did and looked to try and nudge him over that edge towards just carrying her out of there. Damon sank into the kiss, letting the song end before he finally swayed out of it. His eyes were almost sleepy with it as he tipped his head towards the doors. ”Should I have them bring the car around?”

“I promise I’ll keep it safe, I have no intention of breaking it,” Claire assured him gently. She knew that it had taken a lot for Damon to trust her with his heart in the first place and she had no intention of making him regret that. They had both had their hearts broken in the past and it had taken them a long time to pick up the pieces but she knew that Damon was the only person that she would have trusted with her heart so she hoped that he would keep hers safe as well. She had known that she was taking a risk by starting a relationship with Damon, Ares had tried talking her out of it and she knew that others would have done the same but nothing would have changed her mind about being with Damon. She had known she’d had feelings for him even before he’d kissed her that first time but it had taken her a while to feel ready to admit it. She hadn’t felt like she had deserved to be loved for a long time but he had shown her that she was wrong and she was beyond grateful to him for that. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, I was an angel,” Claire said playfully. She knew that couldn’t be further from the truth but she still couldn’t resist joking about it. “You’re the one that kissed me, remember?” Claire asked, an eyebrow raised as she looked over at him. It had taken Damon almost dying to make him do it but everything had changed that day. Coming so close to losing Damon had made her realise just how much she cared about him and she knew that she was never going to take that for granted. She knew that there were plenty in town who might be happy to get Damon out of the way but she wasn’t one of them, she got to see a different side of him and the Damon she saw was one that she loved without any regrets whatsoever. Back then she had been confused about why Damon had sought her out and told her about the werewolf bite rather than telling Stefan but it had made her realise just how strong her feelings for him were. As he said that it meant he wasn’t going to have to chase after her any time soon, Claire felt a smile touch her lips. “You’ll never have to worry about chasing after me, I’m not going anywhere without you.” Damon was stuck with her now whether he liked it or not. “Oh really? Now who is this miracle worker?” she laughed. She knew that Damon had always had an ego but he seemed to be doing better at keeping it in check and she really was glad about that. He was a great guy and he didn’t need all of that bravado, it was the real Damon that she had fallen for and she knew that people’s opinions of him might finally start to change if they got to see the real Damon too. “Oh please, we both know you were already thinking about it,” she teased. “Besides, you’re the one who brings this out in me.” She hadn’t been with anyone else after she left her husband and children behind and she hadn’t missed the physical aspect of it but she hadn’t realised just how lonely she was until Damon kissed her. Now he had unlocked something inside of her and she wanted to spend as much time with him as she could. “Kissing him felt so natural by this point and she pretended to think about it for a moment as he asked if he should have them bring the car around. “I think that’s the best idea you’ve had all day,” she admitted as she stole another kiss.

Intention made all the difference in the world. Katherine had never intended on loving him, she’d probably never intended to fall in love with Stefan either. They were just pawns in the little game she’d started playing the moment she’d fled the Mikaelsons’ lives. Ingratiate herself to them, turn them when it seemed as though it might be the only way to avoid being slaughtered by the Founding families (she’d probably underestimated how much Giuseppe cared about them), scurry away when she eventually grew bored of the game. It was all about her and Damon knew it had taken far too long for him to see that. So desperate for some sort of true love, he’d looked past all the red flags that’d been flying high the entire time damn time. Katherine had used them to stab him straight through the heart when the truth had finally come out and she’d made her little reveal that the whole reality he’d built in his head for a century had been a lie.
Claire couldn’t have been more different to her if she’d tried. Her promise he believed and felt those deft, gentle hands close around his heart like the words alone were gonna protect it. The red flags he’d thought he’d seen in her when she’d first appeared in Mystic Falls more than a century after she said she’d be there had vanished, leaving this – their relationship – behind. Nobody who’d seen them back then would’ve been able to predict where it would end up. Bickering had become … Damon grinned at the thought, dark brows hitching as though he was daring Claire to change her story. When she didn’t, he laughed, shaking his head. ”A fallen one maybe. If I can’t be innocent, neither can you.” It had always been both of them.
Pleading his innocence – and her guilt – wasn’t working now, but he’d tried all the same. They’d pushed each other on at very stage of this relationship. ”Oh, I remember every second of it,” Damon promised, his voice low and silky. ”I don’t remember you stopping me though.” It had been mutual by that point. What had happened with Klaus Mikaelson and being within inches of dying had nudged things along. If it hadn’t been for that it might’ve been another decade before they’d gotten around to it. His smile was soft, a shift from its usual bright arrogance. Maybe in the end almost dying had done him a favour. ”I’d say what if I wanted to run, but trust me, I’m not going anywhere without you either.” As if to anchor himself to her, he drew her in with that touch on her back, dipping into a kiss that shut out all the crowds around them – for another minute at least. In the time they’d been here the space had continued to fill up, Mystic Falls’ great and good always keen to arrive fashionably late. Blue eyes narrowed down, his smile sharpening. Oh she always knew exactly what she was doing to him. ”Oh,” Damon crooned, ”you might know her. About this high, dark hair, the sharpest tongue in a songbird’s mouth, absolutely stunning. She’s one in a million.” And it had taken him all those years to realise it. As much as he wanted everybody here to see exactly what he did, he was more than happy to get out of there too. Forget the parade for the night, he just wanted to be alone with her. Damon hummed and then nodded, like he’d really been considering it at all. ”I enhance it, maybe, but you’re not wrong. I can’t help where my thoughts take me – or us.” Damon winged a brow as he swept Claire towards the doors. ”Just today huh?” He clucked his tongue, gesturing to the valet for the Camaro. ”I guess I’m just a genius, with one hell of a muse.” And he kissed that muse until the car purred up to the bottom of the stairs. Damon cast a glance back at the party as he opened Claire’s door for her. Stefan was gonna have to handle being the only Salvatore here tonight.
