─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas had never felt more uncomfortable in his entire life than he did in that particular moment as his eyes lifted to settle on the newcomers. Or, they settled on Diego, in particular. Seeing him again after the breakup reminded him of how much it had hurt to push Diego away so cruelly. The hold he had on the glass of beer tightened momentarily until the glass threatened to crack under his unforgiving grip. Tomas pried his eyes away from Diego and looked down at his drink instead, his jaw clenched tightly. No one knew at the station that Tomas had broken up with Diego, but they definitely noticed that he had been off for a while, even more so after the breakup. They tried to get some information out of him but he remained quiet instead, refusing to talk about it. Tonight wasn't the first time they had bumped into each other after their breakup but it didn't make it any less painful. Diego had acknowledged him in the most formal way possible which made his heart ache terribly. He had acknowledged him back then only with a nod of his head before he walked away to continue doing his own job, leaving Diego to do his own.
"Aye, Tommy, looks like you've got some fans. Actually, they look pretty pissed. Did you do something to them?" Tomas snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the voice of his colleague who jerked his chin in the direction of Antonio and Ethan. His eyes followed and they relaxed on a glaring Ethan who was looking at him like he had just stepped on his puppy's hand by mistake. Actually, he was pretty sure that what he had done to Diego was way worse. Tomas shifted on his seat uncomfortably as he lifted the glass up to his lips to take a big sip which brought the attention of the Sheriff to him. "Easy there, kid. We have work tomorrow, remember?" Tomas offered the Sheriff a tight-lipped smile before nodding his head.
Tomas absolutely despised how awkward it all was. Everyone was talking normally and had no idea just how uncomfortable it actually was for Tomas who wanted nothing more than to get up and leave. "Honestly, tonight would have gone horribly if it weren't for Tommy right here. He managed to catch the ones responsible for that freak accident. Ain't he our hero?" His colleague clapped him on the back, bringing the attention of everyone to him which made Tomas want to shrink even more. "Yeah, a real hero," Ethan repeated, his tone giving nothing away but it gave plenty away to Tomas who tensed up momentarily. "Sure, he's been acting a little strange lately, but he's still doing pretty damn good at his job." This time, it was the Sheriff's voice.
"It's strange, isn't it? When someone completely flips out on you for no reason like that. When that exact person pushes away people who care deeply about them. Makes you wonder if you did something wrong. Makes, uh, makes your heart break into tiny little pieces." Ethan spoke up again, drawing the attention to himself as he kept his eyes focused solely on Tomas who downed the rest of his beer in one go. The atmosphere was so tense that it made him feel like he was being choked alive. He wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of there, but he was surrounded by people from every direction and the exit door looked like it was miles away from where he was sitting. It felt nearly impossible to get out of there. Tomas could still feel Ethan's gaze on him, watching him, dissecting him, it made him feel so bare. Tomas met Ethan's eyes and the man only raised his eyebrow, surprised by the fact that Tomas had found the courage to meet his eyes. He seemed to find something in his eyes because soon, he was leaning away, and instead, he was reaching out to scoot one of the drinks closer to his captain, initiating a conversation with him momentarily as the tension slowly but surely lessened but it didn't wipe away the awkwardness of the current moment as his eyes fleetingly moved to rest on Diego, watching him quietly for a few moments at first before he quickly looked away again.

They say that time heals all wounds but Diego was starting to think that they had it wrong about this one. It had been weeks since Tommy had ended their relationship and they had seen each other occasionally since then but when they had to talk Diego couldn't stop himself from being more formal with Tommy than he had ever been and Tommy wasn't any better. To Diego he was now either Tomas or Officer Silva, he couldn't bring himself to call him Tommy any longer because it just felt wrong and like that privilege had been revoked the moment Tommy had broken up with him. They were civil when they had to work together on calls but the truth was that for a while afterwards Diego hadn't seen Tommy at all so he had thought that the guy was still doing his best to avoid taking any calls where they might run into each other. Diego had thought about taking some time off work after the breakup but he had kept on getting lost in his own thoughts so in the end it had realised that it was pointless. The best thing he could do right now was keep busy and that was what he intended on doing. It was almost impossible not to think about Tommy when everywhere reminded him of their time together, though. Even the firehouse which had become a second home to Diego after he'd moved to Mystic Falls was full of memories and each one was more painful than the last. There were times on calls when they drove past houses that he and Tommy had viewed and every time he was in town his heart broke when he went past the restaurant where they'd had their first non-date. It was still so painful and Diego had no idea what to do to make it better. Whenever he was at work he was quiet, he didn't tend to socialise as much as he had done before and even though he and the firefighters he worked with had worked alongside the police on a really tough call that day the truth was that being out celebrating a job well done was the last thing he wanted. It wasn't meant to turn into a group thing, Tommy's boss had apparently had the same idea as Diego's and they had all ended up at the Grill together. Diego would have quite happily turned around and walked straight back out again but his Captain had insisted that they all stay for at least half an hour so they could have a drink together and Diego knew that he had no choice but to comply. Diego tried not to let it happen but every so often his eyes kept drifting back to Tommy and each time that happened it made his heart ache. They were sat on opposite sides of the table and Diego had Toni and Ethan next to him which was a blessing but there were still others around and as Tommy's colleagues started talking about how well Tommy had done that day and asking how proud Diego was of him, it became clear that Tommy hadn't told any of them that they had broken up. "Uh, yeah. I'm real proud of him," Diego said, unable to bring himself to tell them that they had broken up and kicking himself when he realised that actually in spite of everything that had happened there was still a part of him that was proud of what Tommy had done that day. Needless to say Diego was glad to get out of that conversation when another of Tommy's colleagues spoke up but hearing Tommy being called a hero was enough to make Diego's heart ache even more. Before he knew it Ethan was speaking up and Diego looked at him with a horrified look on his face. "Ethan, please don't do this," he pleaded, his voice low enough so that hopefully only Ethan and Toni would hear him. Still Ethan continued and Diego found a few of Tommy's colleagues looking at him in confusion but Diego simply smiled and shrugged it off like he had no idea what Ethan was talking about. His own colleagues knew that he and Tommy had broken up but he had asked them not to say anything about it to anyone because he hadn't wanted things to become even more awkward than they already were but it seemed that Ethan had other ideas. Diego couldn't blame him, he knew that Ethan was only looking out for him and Toni had been doing exactly the same thing but right now Diego felt like he just wanted the ground to open up and swallow him whole so he wouldn't have to put up with Tommy's colleagues scrutinising him in the way they were. Downing the last of his drink in one gulp, Diego set the empty glass down in front of him. "I'm going to get another drink," he said not to anyone in particular but desperate for an excuse to get out of there even if only for a moment. Heading over to the bar, Diego ordered himself two drinks and downed the first in one go before picking up the second. It was tempting to stay where he was but as he looked over in the direction of their table he saw Toni beckoning him over so he headed in that direction only to have his heart sink when he realised that the route he wanted to take over there was blocked and the only way he could get there was by passing where Tommy was sitting. Cursing under his breath, Diego knew that he didn't have a choice so he forced a fake smile as he headed in Tommy's direction only to be stopped by the guy sitting next to Tommy. "So what's the next step for the two of you, are you still looking for a house to buy?" he asked, not knowing that just by asking the question he made Diego feel like he was getting stabbed in the stomach. "Yeah, we're still looking but we haven't found anywhere yet. We want to get the house sorted and get a dog, then we might start looking into starting a family," he lied after hesitating for a moment, knowing that he had to keep up the pretence rather than ruin what had become Tommy's night. That had been the dream once but not any longer and Diego's heart broke all over again. Shooting a glance over in his brother's direction, Diego used that as an excuse to get out of there. "Sorry, my brother and Captain want to speak to me. It was nice seeing you again," he said, offering the guy a small smile before turning to Tommy. "I'll catch up with you in a bit babe," he said as he flashed a shadow of his old smile in Tommy's direction although it didn't meet his eyes, the words feeling like poison on his tongue now when not too long ago they had felt completely natural. Excusing himself, he headed around to the other side of the table and slipped into his original seat, his face having lost all its colour on the way back over as he now felt sick to his stomach. ─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas's attention moved to rest on Diego when he said that he was proud of him for today. He felt his heart drop to the pit of his stomach as his grip tightened again on the glass that he had in his hand. He offered nothing in response other than a tight-lipped smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. The only person that Tomas had told about the breakup was Nathan, he didn't mention any of it to his colleagues, and looking back on it, he should have said something because it would have saved them from this intensely awkward situation where Diego felt the need to play along for his sake when all Tomas wanted was to blurt out the truth for once. Then Ethan started talking and the words that followed felt like knives being stabbed repeated through his front. "United front, remember?" Ethan offered back when Diego asked him to halt his attacks on Tomas. At least the guy didn't have the balls to pretend like he didn't know what Ethan was talking about, he wasn't fighting back and Ethan was torn about whether he should see that as a good thing or a bad thing. Ethan wanted to hate the guy, so why wasn't he making it an easy process for him?
Tomas' back straightened as Diego excused himself to go grab another drink. His eyes followed his ex as he began making his way to the bar. There was a small part of him that wanted to get up and go after Diego and that part was getting bigger and bigger the longer he stayed still. Tomas was about to get up from his seat to get another drink but he stopped when the Sheriff refilled his glass and just like that, the excuse he had was taken away from him with ease as he watched the Sheriff fill up the glass. He offered the Sheriff a thankful nod, the same tight-lipped smile still on his lips. Tomas' attention drifted to Diego again just in time to see the other making his way over which made him tense up slightly. He moved slightly to offer Diego an easy passage and he would have hoped it would end there, but his colleague started talking and his words jabbed straight into Tomas' heart repeatedly, leaving him bleeding all over. "Let it go, Dave." But his words fell on deaf ears and then Diego played along and his words just made Tomas feel worse if that were even possible. He didn't ask Diego to play along, but the fact that he did it on his own hurt more. There was a time when they planned the future together and to this day, he still wants to have that with Diego but he was certain he had already ruined every chance he's ever had with him.
Babe.
Tomas didn't realize just how much he had missed hearing Diego call him that until he heard it again. "Okay." Tomas offered a quick smile that evaporated all too quickly. Tomas downed his drink in one go when Diego walked away. "You two are seriously adorable─" Tomas placed the glass back on the table a little too hard which effectively shut Dave up for the first time that night. "Just stop." He snapped before he could stop himself which reminded him of the way he had snapped at Diego that night. "Problem, gentlemen?" The sheriff called out. "No, sheriff, there's no problem at all. Tommy probably thinks I'm being envious of his relationship with his boyfriend, which I'm not, by the way, I'm just being a supportive friend. I'm an ally, I promise." Tomas noticed the way Ethan's gaze moved back to him, looking surprised for a moment to even hear the word 'boyfriend' being mentioned in the conversation. "Boyfriend?" Ethan repeated, a half-smile forming on his lips but Tomas knew it was far from a genuine one. "Yeah! Diego and Tommy are the talks of the station sometimes. They're just so adorable." Another clueless colleague shoved himself into the conversation. Tomas could feel his leg beginning to bounce under the table. Tomas wondered if his abilities included making him disappear, too. He wondered if he could open up the ground and sink into it so he could escape all of this. "Right." Ethan trailed off and Tomas just couldn't continue listening so he pushed himself up. "Excuse me." Tomas made his way to the bar for a refill, but he didn't attempt to flag down the bartender. He ran his hand down his face with a sigh falling from his lips not long after. God, what an awful night.

Diego didn't understand what was going on right now. Tommy had seemed so certain when he had said that it was over and yet it didn't look like he had told anyone he worked with that they had broken up. None of it made any sense, Tommy had broken up from him and he'd said that he needed a break from work and Teo as well and yet here he was seemingly celebrating with his colleagues. Diego could tell from the look on Tommy's face that he was miserable too and realising that was enough to make Diego's heart ache that much more. He knew that he shouldn't care, it had been weeks since they had broken up and he knew that he should be in a better place by now but he wasn't. It still hurt just as much as it had done the day that Tommy had broken up with him, perhaps even more so actually now that everything that he had lost had started to sink in properly, and going along with the pretence that they were still together only made it hurt that much more but he felt like he still owed it to Tommy to keep up with it no matter how much it hurt. He clearly wasn't ready to tell anyone that he worked with that they had broken up and the truth was that Diego still loved him as much as he ever had done so he knew that he didn't want to make things worse. "I remember and I love you guys for it but making a scene here won't do any good." There had to be a reason why Tommy hadn't told anyone and Diego knew that he didn't want to have to say those words out loud again either. He had already had to explain what had happened to Toni and Ethan and he had been honest with the people he worked with but he trusted them not to say anything either. Heading to the bar had seemed like a good idea at the time and Diego offered Tommy a grateful nod when he shifted out of the way to let him through on his way back to his seat but one of Tommy's colleagues caught him and Diego knew that he wasn't going to get away that easily. Even talking about the future he and Tommy had talked about was painful because the truth was that Diego didn't want that future with anyone else. He knew that he had found the person he was meant to be with in Tommy and Diego had been in enough failed relationships to know that what he had with Tommy was real, or at least it was. Now it was all gone but even after everything Diego still wanted that with Tommy. He knew that he shouldn't but he couldn't help it although from the way Tommy had spoken that day they were done for good and it didn't matter what Diego had to say about it. Just hearing Tommy's colleague say that they were adorable hurt, Diego could still see the faces of the people Tommy worked with looking at them that day that he'd picked Tommy up from the station before they had even gotten together. At that point it had been clear that they had approved of the two of them together and comments about how good they were together had often been thrown around when they were working different scenes together and this shouldn't have been any different but it was. It was so different and even though there was a glimmer of warmth that sparked within Diego when he heard those words it was also tinged with a lot of sadness. He had already moved away by that point which he was grateful for but he could still hear every word that was being said and from the looks on the faces of Ethan and Toni, they could too. As Ethan repeated the word boyfriend, Toni shot Diego a look and Diego had to blink away the tears that had formed in his eyes. "He hasn't told any of them what happened, they all still think we're together," he breathed, making sure that only the two of them would hear him. "Today was a big win for Tommy, I can't ruin it for him. There'll be a reason why he hasn't told them and I don't want to give him any reason to reveal what I did," he muttered. "I don't think he would do that, Diego. I think there's more to this than he's letting on," Toni offered and Diego sighed. "I don't want to think that he would but I really don't know anymore." Everything had changed now and nothing made sense anymore. Soon enough Tommy was pushing himself up from his seat and heading in the direction of the bar. Diego knew that he should stay where he was, every fibre of his being was telling him that going to talk to Tommy was a bad idea, and yet before he knew it he was on his feet and making his way over to his ex-boyfriend anyway. "Why haven't you told any of them that you broke up with me?" he asked, needing to know the answer to that question at least. TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tommy’s attention relaxed on the bartender who seemed to notice his presence as he lingered by the bar without really asking for anything. “How can I help you, handsome?” The voice was enough to make him break out of his thoughts, his eyes lifting to relax on the guy behind the bar. He offered him a slight smile, one that wasn’t entirely genuine. “I’ll have the strongest drink you have.” Tomas requested with a quick nod of his head. He wasn’t that much of a drinker, but tonight was one of those nights where he doubted he would be able to survive through it without drinking something heavy to give him that single push needed. “Tough night, I take it?” The bartender asked, making a small conversation that Tomas wanted to end as soon as it started. Truth was, even after breaking up with Diego, he wasn’t looking for a relationship, even if it was just a fleeting one. He released a small hum and nodded his head as he tapped his fingers against the cool countertop. “Wait, I think I recognize you from the news.” Tomas felt a wave of cold ice rush down his spine at the man’s words. “W–What?” Tomas questioned, his face turning pale as if he had just laid his eyes on a real-life ghost. “You’re the cop from today’s rescue, right?” Oh. Tomas relaxed visibly as he nodded his head slowly, lips stretching to offer a fleeting smile. “Just doing my job.” He offered because it was the only thing he could do right these days.
Tomas reached to take the drink, offering the bartender a thankful nod though there was a moment where the bartender’s fingers lingered on his hand but Tomas took his hand away quickly as if he had been burnt by the touch when he heard Diego’s voice behind him. He turned around to look at his ex-boyfriend, his question ringing in his ears for a moment. It was a good question, wasn’t it? One that he should have an answer for, but he didn’t.
He couldn’t explain it.
“It’s—” Tomas trailed off with a small sigh falling from his lips not long after. “It’s complicated.” He added a moment later as his eyes moved to rest on the swimming ice in his drink. His lips parted and closed multiple times, looking like he was just going to end the conversation there when he finally managed to speak up. “I knew if I told them about us, they would have started bothering you and bombarding you with questions.” Tomas leaned back slightly, keeping the distance between them without making any plans to close it, no matter how hard he wanted to. “They don’t know boundaries. Especially Dave.” The same guy who continuously asked questions to the point where it was starting to get on Tomas’ nerves and he wasn’t the type of person to get upset easily.
“They have a habit of wanting to fix things that have nothing to do with them.” Tomas mumbled under his breath, looking like he wanted to be anywhere else but here. He lifted his drink up to his lips, taking a quick sip, hissing quietly as the drink burned his throat on the way down. Definitely too strong. He liked it. “Why did you play along? I wouldn’t have held it against you if you had told them the truth. If anything, I’m sorry for making you lie.”

Diego had been out for a drink after work with his colleagues more times than he could count and they always had fun but this time was different. Even if Tommy and the other cops weren’t there the truth was that Diego’s heart just wasn’t in it, a few of his friends from work had suggested that he try getting back on the horse and seeing who is out there but the truth was that just thinking about being with someone who wasn’t Tommy felt wrong. Diego had been in a lot of different relationships in the past but never one like this before. He knew that what he and Tommy had was a once in a lifetime kind of love, a once in an immortal lifetime kind of love even, and Diego knew that he didn’t even want to think about trying to recreate that with someone else. He knew that he was young but he had always longed to find the kind of love that his parents still had after all these years, the kind of love that his brother and Ethan had, and that was what he’d found with Tommy so as far as Diego was concerned he wanted that with Tommy and no one else so he knew that he was better off alone than he would be trying to find that same happiness with someone else who would never match up to Tommy in his eyes. Diego knew that he might only be feeling this way because Tommy was his first love but deep down he knew that it ran so much deeper than that. He knew that he should have carried on keeping his distance but as he saw Tommy heading to the bar, Diego knew that he had to at least try and talk to him and find out what was going on. Even from across the table he had been able to see that Tommy was just as miserable as he was and there was a small glimmer of hope within Diego that he might be able to use that to talk Tommy around but he knew that he didn’t want to get his hopes up too much if he could help it. Something in Tommy had changed and Diego had thought that it was the fact that he’d killed his ex that had changed things for him but Toni seemed to think there was more to it than that and now he knew that Tommy hadn’t told anyone he worked with about the fact that they had broken up Diego couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps his brother was right after all. “How so?” Diego asked as Tommy said that it was complicated, unable to ignore the pang of jealousy he felt about the way the bartender had been looking at Tommy only moments before. Being this close to him hurt, seeing him was one thing but seeing him clearly upset like this and not being able to reach out to him was agony for Diego. He hated what had happened and he still felt like he needed to understand why Tommy had done it. The not knowing was the worst thing and Diego knew that that was really getting to him. Tommy hadn’t given him much of an explanation, he had only said that he couldn’t do this anymore and Diego had been so devastated that he hadn’t stuck around long enough to try and ask any questions but now he had that chance and he knew that he needed to take it. “I could have taken it, it’s not your job to protect me anymore,” Diego said gently. Saying those words hurt, Tommy had been so protective of him ever since that very first day and Diego had felt so safe with him right from the start but that was all gone now. “I’m starting to see that,” he nodded as Tommy said that the people he worked with didn’t know boundaries. As Tommy went on to say that they had a habit of wanting to fix things that had nothing to do with them, Diego’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Maybe they could have helped fix things between us,” he shrugged. How they would have done that he had no idea but it would have been worth a shot at least. All Diego could do was watch as Tommy took a sip of his drink, Diego knew that he wasn’t that much of a drinker so this was different, that was for sure. As Tommy spoke again, Diego shook his head. “Maybe we should call it even, don’t forget that I made you lie for me,” he offered. The lies weren’t anywhere near the same magnitude but the principal was still the same. If Tommy had told anyone what he had done then Diego knew that he would be behind bars right now. Tommy had told him not to turn himself in for it but there was still that voice lingering at the back of his mind telling him that one day Tommy might change his mind about that too but Diego knew that he couldn’t afford to think like that right now. “Believe it or not, even after everything that’s happened I still love you. I knew you would have had a reason for not telling them and I didn’t want to ruin tonight for you by having the truth about us come out. If that means having to lie for an evening then so be it,” he shrugged. TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas’ shoulder sagged in disappointment when Diego told him that it wasn’t his job to protect him — not anymore. They weren’t together anymore. There was just no reason for him to feel that way, but he still couldn’t help but try to prevent his colleagues from asking too many questions and also from prying too much into their personal lives. They didn’t know what boundaries were. “I know it’s not. But I still wanted to do it anyway. If I can protect someone who is dear to me, then maybe I’ll feel less shitty about—” Tomas realized that the liquor was starting to loosen his tongue and it made him stop almost immediately as he pressed his lips together instead and stayed quiet. Tomas’ eyes widened slightly when Diego said that they could have helped fix things between the two of them, his eyes relaxing on his boyfriend — no, his ex — before he nodded his head slowly. “Maybe.” Maybe that was also why he didn’t say anything to his colleagues. "But there's also a high chance of them taking me out on blind dates and I don't want that. I'm still..." In love with you. Tomas had wanted to say but instead stopped himself and shook his head, refusing to finish the sentence.
“Oh, you mean with…” Tomas mouthed ‘ex’, just in case, really. He knew that most of his colleagues were humans, but it was better to be safe than sorry. “Didn’t need much convincing with that. If I had the ability to turn back time, I would have done it myself, I told you that.” And after that freak accident, he knew that he was pretty much capable of taking a life with his powers. Tomas lifted the glass to take another sip from his drink, the taste of alcohol residing heavily on his tongue, making his expression turn bitter for a moment before he placed his drink down.
Tomas’ eyes widened slightly when Diego told him that he still loved him. The urge to close the distance between them was strong as he stared at Diego without saying anything back for a moment or so as his eyes scanned Diego’s features. “You should stop, Diego,” Tomas mumbled, his voice was small this time around. “You should stop loving me.” I still love you too. I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving you. Those were the words he had wanted to say. “People keep mentioning tonight like it’s supposed to be a big deal to me and maybe I should feel happy about it, but instead I just feel nothing.” Tomas’ shoulders lifted and dropped into a quick shrug, the tip of his finger tracing over the rim of the glass he had in his hand. “I was just doing my job,” Tomas said with a soft sigh falling from his lips. “You know, the same thing applies to you, Diego. You don’t have to protect me anymore. It’s obvious this isn’t making you comfortable, so you don’t have to suffer for my sake.” Tomas said with a quick nod of his head following before he raised the glass to his lips to take another quick sip. “I still—” Tomas spoke up before he could stop himself, immediately chastising himself for it. “I still love you, too.” Tomas finally concluded, his voice going back to sounding small. “You should head back. Don’t wanna keep you away from the fun for too long.” If Tomas could describe the atmosphere with the group in one word, it wouldn’t be fun. Agonizing would be the best way to describe it.
It was too much.

Diego couldn’t miss the way Tommy’s shoulders sagged when he said that it wasn’t his job to protect him any longer and it was enough to make a look of confusion cross the dragon’s face. Tommy was the one who broke things off but it was clear that he still cared and Diego hadn’t expected that. Truth be told he wasn’t sure what he had expected but it was good to see that Tommy hadn’t been able to switch his feelings off completely anyway. As Tommy said that he was dear to him, Diego felt his heart leap. “Less shitty about what?” he asked, unable to deny that he was starting to wonder if perhaps Tommy was right after all and there was more going on than he knew. As Tommy spoke again, Diego studied him carefully for a moment. “I know it’s selfish but I’m glad you don’t want that,” he admitted. Seeing the way the bartender was looking at Tommy just now had been awful and just the thought of him being with someone else was enough to make Diego’s heart break all over again. He wasn’t sure what Tommy had been about to say when he had stopped himself but Diego got the feeling that asking him to finish that sentence wouldn’t do any good so he stayed quiet. “I know I shouldn’t feel jealous about the idea of you being with someone else but I do.” Diego knew that he might be overstepping but the truth was that he didn’t care, he needed Tommy to know even if he had no right to feel the things he did any longer. “I know you did but I was starting to worry that you might change your mind about keeping it quiet,” Diego admitted. “I’m sorry I doubted you.” He felt bad about that now, it was clear that Tommy still wanted to protect him but Diego hadn’t known that before tonight. Tommy had told him not to hand himself in over what had happened with his ex but that really had seemed to be the reason why Tommy had broken up with him so Diego hadn’t known for how long he would want to stay quiet about it. Talking to Tommy now there was so much that still didn’t add up but Tommy was talking to him at least and that was enough to give Diego some hope that perhaps they could work things out. Hope that seemed to dwindle moments later when Tommy told him that he should stop loving him. “I can’t stop,” Diego said, shaking his head before letting his eyes meet Tommy’s once more. “I meant it every time I said that you were it for me, you’re the only person I want to spend my life with and that’s never going to change. I’m never going to stop loving you,” he added gently. Something had changed for Tommy though, or at least he had thought that it had, but the truth was that now he wasn’t so sure. “You should feel proud of yourself for what you did today, we’re all proud of you,” Diego said gently. He knew that he probably shouldn’t still be included in that but he was. Seeing Tommy and not being able to reach out to him hurt but at least they were talking and that was more than they’d been able to do until now. “I can take it,” Diego shrugged as Tommy said that he didn’t have to suffer for his sake. “Besides, you still want to protect me and I still want to do the same for you.” That wasn’t going to change anymore than the fact that he still loved Tommy would. As Tommy said that he still loved him, Diego’s eyes went wide as he looked at Tommy in astonishment. “You do?” he asked, hardly able to believe what he was hearing right now. As Tommy said that he should head back, Diego shook his head. “You can’t just tell me that you still love me and expect me to walk away,” Diego said although he turned as he felt a hand on his shoulder and was surprised to find Toni standing behind him. Toni had seen how heartbroken Diego had been ever since he and Tommy had broken up and his heart went out to his little brother. Toni hadn’t known that that was what he was feeling when Ethan had died, he had simply known that everything had changed. He had tried to move on with his life and start other relationships but his heart had never truly been in it because none of them were Ethan. That was what he saw in Diego now, he had tried talking to his brother about moving on but it was clear that Diego didn’t want to do that and it went beyond him simply not feeling ready to do it. Diego didn’t want to be with anyone else and Toni knew exactly what that felt like because it was what he and Ethan had. He knew that Diego had wanted to find someone who meant that much to him and he had found that in Tommy. Toni wasn’t sure what was really going on with Tommy but he didn’t believe for a minute that the guy had broken up with Diego because of what had happened with his ex. There was something more to it that had made Tommy walk away from the person who had meant the world to him. Toni had seen the way that Tommy looked at Diego when he thought that he wasn’t looking and he had seen his brother do exactly the same thing. They were meant to be together and Toni knew that there had to be a way to fix it. He had watched the way that Tommy had reacted when Ethan had started alluding to the fact that Tommy and Diego had broken up and there was something there that didn’t add up. He had also seen the way that Tommy’s eyes had lingered on Diego while he was at the bar. Toni didn’t always say too much but he liked to observe what was going on around him and the truth was that Tommy wasn’t acting like someone who had fallen out of love with his brother so now he was certain that there was more to it than that. Talk had ended up turning to some of the weirdest calls they’d had while Diego and Tommy were at the bar and Toni couldn’t deny that his interest was piqued when one of Tommy’s colleagues told him about a call from a few weeks ago where some guys had literally been crushed by the Earth. It didn’t make sense to the police but it was starting to make sense to Toni and after sticking around to get the details, he excused himself and made his way over to the bar. As he reached Diego and Tommy, he placed his hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Do you mind if I have a chat with Tommy a minute?” he asked, a laugh escaping his lips at Diego’s startled expression. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt him,” Toni assured him. Diego seemed to consider for a moment before nodding and returning to the table. “Come on, let’s get some air,” he said, clapping Tommy on the back before leading the way outside. Once the door was closed, he looked around the parking lot to make sure that they were definitely alone before speaking again. “I had an interesting chat with a couple of the guys you work with. They told me about a call they had a month or so ago where some guys were crushed under a pile of Earth, right around the time when you started pulling away from Diego,” he said, studying Tommy carefully as he tried to gauge his reaction. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?” There was no hint of anger or accusation in Toni's voice as he asked the question and his expression was nothing but kind. ─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas offered a gentle shake of his head in return. "It's nothing." He waved his hand to dismiss the question. His expression softened when Diego told him that he was glad he didn't want to go on blind dates. "You won't have to feel that jealousy. Ever. Because honestly, Diego, I don't see myself being with anyone else after you." Diego was it for him. He was everything that he had been looking for. He had no doubt in his mind that he was going to spend the rest of his immortal, or mortal life healing from this.
Tomas frowned at Diego's words. He was worried he might change his mind? Oh, god. "Baby─" Tomas paused immediately when the pet name fell from his lips. "Sorry." Tomas took a deep breath and started again. "Diego, I would never do that to you, doesn't matter if we're broken up or not. You saved my life. You saved Teo's life. I'm not going to overlook that and you know... snitch." Tomas shook his head as he released a soft sigh. "I don't blame you for doubting me, though. I didn't give you much of a reason to trust me after we broke up, did I?" His words left a bitter taste in his mouth which he washed away with a quick sip from the drink he had in his hand.
Tomas could feel his heart squeezing to the point where it was difficult for him to even breathe properly. He stared at Diego without knowing what to offer back to that. "God, Diego, you can't say that..." Tomas trailed off, his pain and hurt visible in the tone of his voice as he moved his eyes away from Diego. He was trying his damn hardest not to close the distance between them and kiss Diego because spending a few weeks without doing that left him feeling like he was experiencing withdrawal symptoms. He missed Diego so goddamn much.
Tomas offered a slight smile when Diego told him that they were all proud of him. If only they knew... If only they knew the truth. Surely they would stop feeling that pride and would lock him behind bars where they'd make sure he'd never be able to hurt another person again. "Thanks." Tomas offered back, his voice small but gentle. His voice was always so gentle whenever he'd talk to Diego.
"Yeah, Diego. I do." Tomas said with a small sigh following, unsure why he even let himself blurt that out loud. He should have kept that to himself. He wondered if he was drunk, or if kitsunes can't even get drunk. If it's the latter then he can only blame himself for blurting the truth out to Diego. "You have to, Diego─" Tomas stopped and straightened a little when his eyes relaxed on Diego's brother, Antonio.
Tomas' eyes widened at the mention of Antonio wanting to talk to him. His eyes slowly moved away from Antonio to see Ethan looking their way, but his expression gave nothing away. Tomas felt his anxiety begin to nibble away at his insides, leaving him feeling antsy. "Uh, yes, sir." Tomas glanced at Diego one last time who had already made his way to the table. Tomas left behind his drink on the countertop and made his way out of the Grill, unsure what to make of all of this. The clap on his back, the way Antonio was taking him outside. Tomas gulped past the lump in his throat and moved his attention to rest on Antonio again.
His next words were nearly enough to make Tomas' knees give out underneath him as the world suddenly started to blur as his chest tightened. Tomas was pretty sure his shocked expression gave him away as his lips parted and closed a few times. "I didn't─" Tomas started and then paused again. "That wasn't─" God, those screams again. The unique sound that bones break when they get crushed... Almost like walking on eggshells. "I'm afraid n─not, sir." Tomas finally managed to piece together a sentence that made sense.
How did he know? Tomas felt like a deer trapped in headlights and no matter where he looked, he couldn't get away. Those lights would just follow him anyway. "It was a freak accident... That's what, um, the news called it, right?" Tomas had always been terrible at lying and of course, it wasn't any different now.

Diego wasn’t sure he bought it when Tommy dismissed his question but he knew that he didn’t want to push his luck too much right now because at least Tommy was talking to him so he decided not to push it. He couldn’t stop himself from saying that he would feel jealous if Tommy started seeing someone else, though, and his expression turned to one of confusion. “You don’t see yourself being with anyone other than me and I know I don’t want to be with anyone other than you so what’s stopping us from being together?” he asked, unable to get his head around the logic behind Tommy’s decision right now. Diego knew that Tommy could have simply decided that he wanted to be on his own but that didn’t make sense after all of the things that Tommy had said in the past about the future he’d wanted them to have so Diego really was at a loss. As Tommy called him baby, Diego felt a pang in his heart but he wasn’t sure if it was a good or a bad thing. “I think I always knew deep down that you wouldn’t have changed your mind about that but you changed your mind about us so I wasn’t sure,” Diego admitted. None of this was making any sense right now and Diego knew that he wanted nothing more than to get to the bottom of what was going on inside Tommy’s head but it wasn’t easy. He knew that he couldn’t just go ahead and ask but at the same time it looked like Tommy was slowly but surely starting to open up a little more and for that Diego truly was glad. “To be honest I didn’t know what to think after we broke up and I still don’t but I know now that you still want to protect me so I trust you,” Diego said gently, knowing that he would be a fool not to after everything they had been through together. “Why not? It’s the truth,” Diego assured him. “We had our whole future together mapped out and I wanted that with you so badly. I still do.” Tommy had broken Diego’s heart, that much was true, but even though it had been weeks since they had broken up Diego’s feelings for Tommy hadn’t changed. If anything the distance between them had made those feelings grow stronger. “I miss you so much.” Diego knew that he might be sounding desperate right now but the truth was that he didn’t care. The only person he wanted to be with was Tommy and Diego needed him to know that. Nodding as Tommy thanked him, Diego felt a half smile touch his lips at how gentle Tommy’s voice was. That was the Tommy he remembered, not the one that had snapped at him that day. As Tommy confirmed that he still loved him, Diego’s expression turned to one of bewilderment. “Then why are you doing this?” he asked, unable to deny that he was becoming more confused the longer they spent talking. As Tommy said that he had to go back to the others, Diego really didn’t want to but then Toni joined them and asked if he could talk to Tommy and Diego could see that something was going on but he wasn’t sure what. He didn’t want to leave right now but Toni had assured him that he wasn’t going to hurt Tommy and Diego knew that he wouldn’t have interrupted if it wasn’t important so he knew that he had no choice. Returning to his seat next to Ethan, he glanced over at his brother-in-law. “Any idea what that’s about?” he asked as he watched Toni and Tommy head outside. TOMAS SILVA

Toni couldn’t help but feel like it was a good thing that Diego and Tommy were finally talking and normally he wouldn’t have even thought about interrupting but what he had just learned couldn’t wait. Now things were starting to make sense and after hearing what happened Toni recognised the signs instantly. The strange behaviour, the snapping at the people who cared about him, pushing away Diego and Teo, it all suddenly made sense and he got the feeling that Tommy was struggling so much more than any of them realised right now. Toni knew exactly what that was like and he didn’t want Tommy to end up having the same experience with it that he’d had so even if Tommy and Diego didn’t end up getting back together, he knew that he had to at least try and help Tommy if he would let him. Nodding as Tommy agreed to go outside with him, Toni could see that Tommy was nervous and he knew that that was to be expected. The two of them had talked before, of course, that came with the territory of just how long Diego and Tommy had been together for but they had never really talked too much just the two of them as Diego and Ethan were normally around. Leading the way outside, Toni made sure that they were truly alone before asking what he’d wanted to ask. Straight away he could see that Tommy was surprised and he struggled to find the words to deny it which was more than enough to make Toni realise that he was right and that Tommy had had something to do with it after all. “How many times have I told you that you don’t need to call me sir?” he asked gently. “Looks like my brother’s right, you are a bad liar,” he added although his voice wasn’t unkind. In fact that was a good thing right now. “That is what they’re calling it but I think we both know they’ve got it wrong,” he said, his eyes still searching Tommy’s as he spoke. “I’m not judging, I swear,” Toni added quickly as he held his hands up in an innocent gesture. “I might be way off base here and feel free to tell me if I am but I’m going to let you in on a secret that only Ethan knows,” Toni said before taking a deep breath. Opening up about this wasn’t easy, in fact he hadn’t even told Diego or his parents about it. The only person he had told was Ethan because he didn’t want to have any secrets from his husband. “After Ethan died during the war I was a mess. I didn’t even know I loved him back then but I was so angry with the people who killed him. One night after the fighting had stopped for a while I disappeared from my unit. I lost control and shapeshifted and I went and killed all of the men we were fighting,” he explained, clenching his hands into fists at his sides to try and stop them from shaking. Even now Ethan was back in his life it was still a painful memory so telling Tommy was difficult for him but he knew that he needed him to understand. “I flew Ethan home and buried him and then returned to keep on fighting because I felt like I owed it to my men. When the war ended and we returned home I shut everyone out. I pushed away my parents and my friends, I couldn’t even bring myself to really keep in touch with the guys I fought with. A part of it was grief over losing Ethan but I also did it out of guilt over what I had done and the fear that if I could kill those men then I might hurt someone else,” he continued gently. It wasn’t something that he was proud of at all so he knew that he didn’t want Tommy to end up making the same mistakes he had. “It took decades for me to start letting people in again so I recognise the signs. The erratic behaviour, pushing away the people who care about you the most, the self-loathing. I see all of that in you,” he said as he stepped forward and placed a hand on Tommy’s shoulder before giving it a gentle squeeze. “Whether you’ve been through something like that or not I don’t know but I do know that something bad has happened for you to push Diego and Teo away and even the people you work with have realised you’re not yourself. Just remember that you’re still young and you only recently learned about any of this so it’s going to take you time to learn how to control your powers. None of us are born with perfect control and we’re going to accidentally slip up but it doesn’t make us monsters, if anything it makes us that much more human,” he offered, hoping that Tommy would understand where he was coming from. “It’s up to you whether or not you and my brother end up together but I don’t want you making the same mistakes I did, you don’t deserve that. You also don’t have to do any of this on your own.”TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Me. That was the answer he instantly wanted to give Diego, but he held back from doing so. He was the reason they couldn't find their way back to each other because the risk of accidentally hurting Diego was too great and he would rather suffer from a broken heart than lay a hand on Diego. "We just can't be together anymore, Diego. Just leave it at that." Tomas offered instead with a shake of his head following, his lips pressing together into a thin line.
"Yeah, I don't blame you for thinking that way." Tomas didn't exactly blame him for thinking that way, especially since he had changed his mind so abruptly about his relationship with Diego. But that kind of secret was something that he was planning on taking with him to the grave. Tomas nodded his head slowly as he listened to Diego. Whether they were together or not, he had a feeling that he was always going to want to protect Diego. The other meant the world to him. They had started as a casual fling but it really didn't take long for Tomas to catch feelings for him and soon, he was falling so deeply in love with him that he was starting to visualize the two of them having a family together. He would do anything to turn back time and stay with Diego because being without him was like being without the most essential things in life. Food, water, air... Being without him made him feel so hollow.
Being without Diego made his life look monochrome.
Tomas could feel his heart squeeze as he listened to Diego, remembering how they talked about having their own place, adopting a dog, and down the path, they would adopt their own kid, too. They would slowly but surely build their own family and Tomas wanted nothing more than to have that, but... It was too dangerous. He was too dangerous. "It'll get easier. Missing me will get easier. You'll move on, Diego." Tomas offered instead of admitting just how much he misses Diego too because he knew by admitting that, he'd be exposing himself too much. He would be making it a lot harder for himself to resist pulling Diego into his arms.
Tomas pressed his lips into a thin line, unsure how to respond to that without unraveling everything. He turned his gaze away from Diego eventually and shook his head, his lips pressed together into a thin line. When he eventually spoke up again, he was interrupted by the presence of Diego's older brother. He eventually made his way out of the bar and when Diego made his way back to his seat next to Ethan, Ethan turned and faced Diego before he shook his head. "No idea." Ethan admitted as he lifted his glass to his lips to take a quick sip. "I guess we'll be able to tell from Tomas' expression when he comes back in. If he looks like he's about to faint on the spot, then we'd know Toni's protective side won. If not, then they were just having a conversation, about you, I'd say." Ethan said with a quick nod of his head following. 'I did see him talking to Tomas' colleagues while you were chatting with Tomas, though." Ethan turned his attention to look at Diego, watching him for a moment before he gave his arm a gentle squeeze. "It'll be okay."
Tomas' eyes widened slightly at Antonio's words. 'Oh... I thought I lost the privilege to do so after Diego and I broke up. I didn't want to be disrespectful." Tomas said with a quick nod of his head as he explained why he referred to Antonio as 'sir."
"I'm not─ I'm not lying." Tomas had always worn his heart on his sleeve which made it nearly impossible for him to weave a good lie when he needed to. He just couldn't lie to save his own life. He pressed his lips into a thin line to stop himself from spewing any other nonsense before shaking his head. Way to go, Tomas.
Tomas' eyes widened slightly as he listened to Antonio. It really did seem like Antonio knew it was him. His lips parted and closed a few times but he couldn't find anything to say and when Antonio said that he wasn't judging, his shoulders lost some of the tension collected there. Tomas tilted his head with a curious look crossing his features as he listened to Antonio. His expression turned into one of surprise when Antonio revealed that he had gone through something similar, but the difference was that Toni had lost Ethan. It wasn't the exact same, but it had too many similarities that he couldn't look past.
Tomas was quiet as he listened to Antonio, his expression turning sympathetic as he continued listening. Tomas knew that Antonio was right. He was no expert in controlling his own powers and it was completely normal for him to lose control over his own powers. Tomas just struggled for the longest time to forgive himself for doing something so awful. He had wanted to put those men behind bars, not kill them. He was no judge, jury, or executioner. He was just a patrol officer. He could feel tears gather in his eyes but he quickly wiped them away as he released a shaky breath. "Thank you." Tomas said in a small voice at first, his eyes relaxing on Antonio. "For sharing this with me and if my sympathy means anything right now, then I'm sorry, that you went through that." Tomas offered, his voice a lot softer now. "I'll─ I'll talk to him." He said with a quick nod of his head following. "I want to tell you, sir─ Antonio, but I want to tell Diego first." Tomas said, his voice soft. "He deserves to know why I really broke up with him."

It had been one thing when Diego had thought that Tommy didn’t love him anymore but now he knew that those feelings were still there and it made the fact that they still weren’t together that much worse. As Tommy said that they just couldn’t be together anymore and asked him to leave it at that, Diego couldn’t deny that he was hurt. He wanted to say something, he wanted to press Tommy for more details so that he could at least try and understand what was going on but the moment he opened his mouth he was reminded of the way that Tommy had snapped at him that final day at his apartment. That wasn’t the Tommy he had known and Diego knew that the last thing he wanted to do was to make Tommy snap like that again especially since now he would be doing so in front of everyone so instead Diego closed his mouth, only speaking when he caught the attention of the bartender that had been flirting with Tommy when he’d arrived. Ordering himself a drink, Diego ignored the look the guy gave him which seemed to be a mixture of jealousy and hatred and turned his attention back to Tommy instead. “I still should have known better,” Diego said gently as he took the drink from the bartender and took a sip. Tommy had done so much more for him than he probably even realised. Diego hadn’t thought that he would ever want to risk letting anyone get close to him the way his ex had before Tommy came along but the guy had helped him open his heart again and before they had even started a relationship officially Diego had fallen for him. Tommy was the best guy he had ever met and even though Diego had never planned on falling for him the way he had done it had still happened anyway. That was why it had hurt so much when Tommy had broken up with him, things had seemed to be going so well for them until Tommy had started pulling away from him and now the future that they had both wanted so badly had been ripped right out from under them. Diego wanted nothing more than to change that and get Tommy back and looking at him now Diego hoped that there was still a chance but he wasn’t sure. “You’re an incredible guy and I know you’d never intentionally hurt me or anyone else.”The thought of living his life without Tommy in it was enough to fill Diego with dread. The future had looked so bright ever since Tommy had come into his life but now without him Diego was no longer interested in the future because he knew that it would never match up to what he and Tommy would have built together. As Tommy said that missing him would get easier and that he would move on, Diego shook his head. “It seems you underestimate just how much I love you,” Diego said sadly. “You know about my past, you know how many relationships I’ve been in that haven’t worked out but I’ve never felt like this about any of them. I don’t want to move on from you. You’re the one and if seeing the way Toni and Ethan and my parents are together has taught me one thing it’s that when the people in my family find their soulmate then no one else will ever come close. That’s what you are to me,” he said gently. Diego knew that he could quite easily end up opening himself to another level of hurt right now but he knew that he had to be honest with Tommy. Truth be told it was taking all of the self-restraint he had right now to stop himself from reaching for Tommy but he knew that the last thing he wanted was to push Tommy too far. He didn’t want to leave Tommy, not now that they were finally talking and he was starting to open up a little, but Diego knew that he had to. Returning to his seat next to Ethan, Diego signed as Ethan said that he had no idea what Toni wanted to talk to Tommy about. “I really hope he doesn’t let that side of him win,” he admitted gently. “Tommy told me he still loves me and that he’ll carry on keeping my secret so that’s not the reason why he broke up with me. I don’t understand what is,” he added. None of it made any sense right now and Diego hated it. As Ethan squeezed his arm and said that it would be okay, Diego felt a half smile touch his lips. “I hope so.”Once they were outside and Tommy said that he thought he’d lost the privilege of not calling him sir when he and Diego broke up, Antonio shook his head. “I won’t lie to you, I hate the fact that you broke my brother’s heart but I also don’t believe that you would have done that if you thought you had another choice. You’re a good guy so no, you haven’t lost that privilege,” Antonio assured him. He still hoped that Tommy would end up changing his mind and he knew that Diego did as well but whether or not that would happen remained to be seen. Antonio had only opened up to one person about what had happened after Ethan had died and that was his husband. Antonio knew that he didn’t want there to be any secrets between them so he’d told Ethan before they had gotten married and it had felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He still carried the guilt around with him to this day but it had lifted to an extent and he was grateful for that. Antonio could see just how much his words had affected Tommy by the way his eyes shone with tears and Antonio reached forward to give his shoulder a gentle squeeze. “It does, thank you,” he said sincerely. “I’m trusting you with this so don’t let me down,” he added. He knew that telling anyone wouldn’t do Tommy any good considering how long ago it had happened but he still hoped that Tommy would keep it to himself. It really wasn’t something that Antonio ever felt comfortable talking about but if his suspicions about what was going on with Tommy were right then he knew that it was something that the guy had needed to hear. AAs it was Tommy was soon saying that he wanted to tell Diego what had happened first and that was enough to have a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “I think that’s a good idea,” he admitted. “I’ll go and get him, if you’re ready,” he added gently. “Just remember you’re not alone and when you’re ready to talk, you know where I am,” he said, waiting until Tommy confirmed he was ready to talk to Diego before giving his shoulder one more squeeze and heading inside. It didn’t take Antonio long to spot his brother sitting next to Ethan and he made his way over, placing a hand on his brother’s back. “Tommy wants to talk to you. He’s outside,” he said, offering his brother a reassuring nod as he got up and took a deep breath before heading inside while Antonio took his brother’s seat and took Ethan’s hand in his, lifting their joined hands and pressing a light kiss to his husband’s knuckles. Diego had no idea what had happened between his brother and Tommy, Toni hadn’t given anything away at all and Diego had wanted to ask him but the words hadn’t come out. Instead he had headed outside and his heart leapt at the sight of Tommy even as Diego chastised himself for it. He knew that seeing Tommy shouldn’t still have this effect on him but he couldn’t help it, he loved him and he knew that was never going to change. “Toni said you wanted to talk to me,” Diego said as he wrapped his arms around himself in what was a cross between a protective gesture and to shield himself from the chill of the air. “Are you okay?”TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas shook his head with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "It's fine, Diego." He told him in a soft voice, knowing it wouldn't be wise to linger on that. He really didn't blame Diego, though. Tomas tensed momentarily at Diego's words, his eyes avoiding the other's as he pressed his lips into a thin line to stop himself from saying anything else because he didn't want to say something he would regret later on.
Tomas' expression softened as he listened to Diego, his words making his heart tighten in a way that made it nearly impossible for him to take his next breath. It was taking every last bit of restraint for him not to lean in and bring Diego forward into a tight hug because he knew that would just not be a wise choice right now. Tomas wanted to take back everything he had said that night and tell Diego just how much he meant to him and how much he wanted to keep him safe and sound. He wanted to tell him so many things but it all fell short whenever he'd try to open his mouth and talk.
"I knew that wasn't the case, but if that's not it, then why did he break up with you?" Ethan questioned, mostly to himself as he released a soft sigh not long after. "I guess we'll see." Ethan added a moment later with a quick nod of his head following. In the meantime, he stayed by Diego's side, checking on him every now and then as the rest of their team carried on with their conversation.
Tomas nodded his head slowly in an understanding manner. Hearing that breaking up with Diego had broken the other's heart made his heart tighten. He never meant to put him through so much pain, but at the time, it seemed like the wiser option because he didn't want to hurt Diego unintentionally. 'Thank you." Tomas said with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips, relieved to hear that he hadn't lost the privilege of being on a first-name basis with Antonio.
Tomas offered Antonio a gentle smile when he told him that his sympathy did in fact mean something to him. "I will not." Tomas promised with a quick nod of his head following. As much as he wanted to keep Diego at an arm's length to avoid hurting him, he knew that if he ended up losing Diego forever, he would regret it more than anything else in the world. He had something good with Diego. Something wonderful, even. It was something worth fighting for. "I know. Thank you." Tomas offered with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "I'm ready." Tomas said with a nod of his head following. When Antonio made his way inside to get Diego, Tomas released a shaky breath into the cold night air. He buried his hands inside the pockets of his jacket.
"Oh... He's coming without him. That's ─ even scarier." Ethan said as his eyes relaxed on Toni who started making his way over to them. Ethan's curious eyes were focused on his husband, his head tilted slightly to the side. Though he seemed to relax a lot more when he heard Toni say that Tomas wanted to talk to Diego. "Oh. He's alive, that's good." Ethan joked in a light-hearted manner. "Stay safe, okay? We'll be right here if you need us." Ethan said with a quick nod of his head following as he offered the younger an encouraging smile. When Toni sat down next to him and left a kiss on his knuckles, he melted against his husband as he leaned forward to leave a gentle kiss on his cheek. "Why are you a firefighter again? You should've been a relationship counselor." Ethan questioned in a teasing voice.
Tomas turned around when he heard the sound of Diego's voice, suddenly his courage felt feeble all over again. "Yeah... I do." Tomas said with a quick nod of his head following. "Yeah, of course." Tomas answered all too quickly before he seemed to pause. Tomas looked down at the ground for a moment before he shook his head. "Actually, I'm─ I'm not." Tomas mumbled instead, finally stopping with all the pretending, all the lies. He's had enough. He had a feeling if he pushed Diego away again, he'd stay away for good this time and Tomas didn't want that.
"I found the guys who beat you up, Diego." Tomas' eyes slowly moved to settle on Diego, watching him for a moment. "I was going to arrest them for assault, give them the punishment they deserve, but I─" Tomas paused, his frown still digging deep into his features. "I lost control." He revealed a moment later. "All I could think about was making them suffer the same way they made you suffer and everything just went out of hand." Tomas bit down on his inner cheeks, allowing a brief moment of silence to settle between them.
"Losing control was too easy, Diego. Ever since then, I've been so out of touch with my own powers and I couldn't keep you around because..." Tomas blinked out of his thoughts when he imagined himself losing control and hurting Diego really badly. "Because what I lose control when you're there? What if I h─hurt you? What if I did to you what I did to those guys? I would never be able to forgive myself because you mean the world to me, Diego. I love you, more than anything in this godforsaken world and I th─thought that if I put distance between us, that would minimize the chances of you getting hurt, but I'm s─so unhappy without you. It hurts so much more when you're away from me, Diego. Every time I close my eyes, I remember the way you looked at me when I broke up with you and it hurts so goddamn much, Diego. I'm s─sorry. I'm so─ so sorry for breaking your heart like that. I'm so sorry for everything... I just wanted to p─protect you... From me. From this thing inside of me..." Tomas' eyes were filled to the brim with tears that kept falling down his cheeks."I'm so sorry for everything..."
