Tommy had said that the fact that Diego had killed his ex hadn’t changed anything between them, he had promised that it hadn’t made a difference and Diego had believed him. Ever since his ex arrived in Mystic Falls and tried to kill the two of them and Teo things had slowly started to change. Those first few days afterwards he and Tommy had done their best to help Teo settle in and things had started getting back to normal after they had returned to work. Diego knew that his family had been so worried about him after learning what had happened but he had told them that he’d killed his ex and even though it was a terrible act, he could see that his brother and Ethan were both relieved. The whole time he had been in Mystic Falls they had been scared about his ex finding him and finishing the job he’d started by taking his life but now he wouldn’t get the chance to try again. Diego couldn’t deny that he was relieved that he no longer had to worry about his ex after living in fear for such a long time but that last encounter still replayed in his mind every time he closed his eyes and he still felt an immense amount of guilt over what he had done. Sleeping next to Tommy helped, he was the one who was able to help stop the nightmares when they came, but over the last few weeks Tommy had started growing distant. Whenever Diego suggested they meet up Tommy came up with an excuse and whenever Diego stopped by Tommy’s place he wasn’t there. Even stopping by Tommy’s work didn’t seem to do any good because he was just told that Tommy would catch up with him later and the truth was that he was getting tired of it. Diego kept on telling himself that he just needed to give Tommy space, that he was just helping Teo or work was keeping him busy, but deep down he knew that it was more than that. Tommy was pulling away from him and the only thing that made sense was that he was doing so because of what had happened with his ex. Diego had been trying his best to be patient with him and give him the time he needed but that day he had bumped into Teo and she had asked if he and Tommy had had a fight. It seemed that she had noticed that Tommy had been acting strangely too and she didn’t seem to know anything else that might have caused it either. Diego had tried calling Tommy to see if it was okay to go over to his place but the call went through to voicemail so either Tommy was busy or he was screening his calls. Either way Diego had had enough and he knew that he just couldn’t sit around doing nothing. Letting out a sigh of frustration, Diego grabbed his jacket and headed downstairs, only pausing when Toni asked what the hurry was. “I need to see Tommy, I have to find out what is going on once and for all,” Diego answered, grabbing his car keys from the side and slipping them into his pocket. As Toni offered to go with him, Diego shook his head. “Thanks but this is something I have to do on my own, I’ll see you later,” he said, doing his best to keep his voice steady even though his hands were shaking. Heading outside, Diego climbed into his car and drove the familiar route across town to Tommy’s place, pulling up outside his apartment before getting out of the car and banging on his boyfriend’s door. “Tommy, open up. I need to talk to you,” he called, hoping that this time Tommy would answer. TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
"No─!" The sound of bones breaking was what brought Tomas out of his thoughts and the sound of his phone ringing was what stopped him from sinking back into that same old loophole again of replaying the worst moment of his life. Tomas reached into his pocket to take his phone out, his eyes relaxing on the familiar name and picture displayed on his screen. His eyes glossed over as he found himself sinking back into his own thoughts, remembering the hands peeking from underneath the rubble, moving, twitching until they stilled. Tomas swiped on the screen to send Diego right into voicemail instead, he couldn't find the courage to talk to him, to explain what had happened.
Tomas' attention moved to the kettle as it began to whistle, signaling that it was done. His eyes relaxed on his reflection in the stainless steel exterior of the kettle and noticed that there was an orange glow emitting from his eyes which made him step back as he closed his eyes tightly. "Listen, man, whatever we did, we can talk it out, okay? There's no need to put on this freak show to scare us." Attacker one held his hands up. "Why the hell are his eyes glowing, what the fuck is this?" Attacker two whispered to his friend before one of them reached slowly into the waistband of his jeans, taking out his revolver, and at the first shot, Tomas snapped out of his thoughts again before they could consume him whole.
Tomas reached for the whistling kettle to pour himself a cup of tea, anything to keep him awake because he couldn't fall asleep without hearing those awful noises all over again. Tomas made his way back into the living room where he spent most of his time and reached for the remote to the TV, just to have something playing in the background but the channel that started playing was the news and it displayed a very familiar background.
FREAK ACCIDENT TAKES THE LIVES OF TWO MEN, IDENTITY UNKNOWN
Tomas could see the damage he had done to the ground in the background and it made his heart drop into the pit of his stomach as Tomas gulped dryly past the lump in his throat. He flinched hard when he heard banging on the door which made him drop the mug that he had in his hand.
They found him, they were going to take him in, they knew─
Tomas' thoughts came to an abrupt halt when he heard Diego's voice which made him release a shaky sigh of relief. He realized belatedly that he can't pretend he wasn't home, especially after the sound of his mug shattering gave him away. "Damn it." Tomas reached to pick up the broken pieces of his mug, groaning when he managed to cut his hand, blood pooled to the surface almost immediately and it sent him back to that cursed moment as he watched the blood begin to emit from underneath the ground. It almost looked like the earth was bleeding, but Tomas knew better. Tomas blinked out of his thoughts as he watched his skin heal quickly, leaving behind nothing but dried blood.
Tomas placed aside the broken pieces of his mug to minimize the risk of accidentally hurting Diego. "Coming!" He tried to adapt a cheerful tone. Tomas quickly reached for the remote to switch the channel and began making his way to open the door. "Hey, Diego." Tomas greeted, lips stretching into a thin-lipped smile. "Sorry, I was working. Actually, I still am. So, I can't hang out right now."

There was a part of Diego that had always known that things were going too well with Tommy. Throughout his whole life he had spent his time trying to figure out who he was and who he wanted to be with and he knew that he had finally found that person in Tommy. He had come out to his parents before he’d moved to Mystic Falls and accepting that he was gay had given him the chance to finally start over with his life. Tommy had quite literally swept him off his feet that very first day and he had been doing that over and over again ever since then. Diego had always felt like Tommy was too good to be true and he had worried that one day he would do something to screw up what they had and now it seemed like he had done exactly that. He knew that he had done the right thing by killing his ex – Diego had never wanted to become a killer, he had never wanted to become the monster that his ex had accused him of being – but he knew that it was his ex who was the real monster. He would have killed the two of them and Teo if Diego hadn’t stopped him and that was something that Diego had known he couldn’t let happen. He would have given himself over to his ex if it had meant that Tommy and Teo would be spared but his ex hadn’t been willing to accept that. He had wanted to kill all three of them and Diego had known that there was no way he was going to let the two of them die. To start with things had been pretty normal after that but then Tommy had started pulling away from him and Diego didn’t understand why. He had tried talking to Tommy about it but he had just told him that everything was fine and then he had started pulling away even more. As far as Diego knew the only thing that had changed was the fact that he’d killed his ex and he had found himself wondering if perhaps Tommy was regretting his decision to keep it a secret from everyone else. Tommy had said that it was self-defence but now he was acting like he couldn’t stand to be in the same room as him and that hurt more than anything else. Diego had been doing his best to be patient with Tommy and let the guy come to him when he was ready but this had been going on for weeks now and Diego knew that he just couldn’t take it any longer. He had thought that if there was one person that Tommy would have opened up to about what was going on with him then it would have been Teo but even she seemed to be in the dark about what was really going on with her brother. That was enough to worry Diego, he knew how close Tommy and Teo had been before Teo had disappeared and if Tommy was keeping something from her then Diego knew that it had to be something bad. Normally the drive to Tommy’s was filled with joy but this time was different, this time Diego could feel a growing sense of dread building inside of him. Banging on the door, his heart still skipped a beat when Tommy’s voice sounded but there was something different in his tone and that was enough to have Diego’s hands clenching into fists at his sides as he tried his best to bury the nerves that he was now feeling. As the door opened Diego’s heart ached at the sight of Tommy standing before him, it had been too long since he had last been close to him like this and Diego wanted nothing more than to kiss him but then Tommy was speaking and his heart sank. “Tough because I’m not going anywhere until you’ve told me what is going on with you,” Diego said, using every ounce of courage he had to walk past Tommy into the apartment and turn to face him. “I ran into Teo today and she asked if we’d had a fight because you’ve been acting strange lately but I had no idea what to tell her because you won’t talk to me,” he said, doing his best to keep his voice steady as he spoke. “Is it because of what I did? Are you regretting keeping it to yourself?” he asked, his eyes searching Tommy’s frantically for any kind of a sign that he was right. “If you are then I’ll go to the station and hand myself in right now and I’ll keep you and Teo out of it. I already feel guilty about it but the way you’re avoiding me is so much worse. I’d rather the truth came out and face the consequences than keep doing this,” he continued, his eyes shining with tears as they met Tommy’s. “Please baby, just talk to me. Tell me what’s going on.”TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas spent so long fighting for justice, he spent so long working hard to bring the bad guys in front of the eyes of the law. He worked hard not to become like those monsters who killed with no remorse, but that day... That day, something within him snapped. His emotions were intense, but the most prominent one was anger. He should have brought them back to the station, he should have done things differently but he didn't. Instead, he took their lives. They were the same group of people who hurt Diego. The same group he had sworn to Diego that he was going to find and bring his boyfriend the justice he deserved. But what he had done that day... He never thought he could do something like that with his own powers. Different news outlets covered the story, still playing it despite the fact that it's been a while. Different news outlets displayed different numbers of casualties. Sometimes, it was two, other times it was three, but Tomas knew better. They weren't just two that night. When he snapped out of it, there was blood and bits everywhere. He knew that some of them had been crushed to the point where it would be nearly impossible to identify them. He had done that.
Their blood, no matter how rotten, was on his hands. And if he could hurt them like that, then he could hurt others. He could hurt Diego and the thought alone made him sick to his stomach. It was the main reason he tried to turn Diego away as the other stood right before him. It was the main reason he had to clench his hands so tightly to stop himself from reaching out to Diego.
Tomas should have known that Diego wouldn't just turn around and walk away. He shouldn't have answered the door, to begin with. Tomas tipped his head back with a small sigh falling from his lips. "Come on in, then." He mumbled mostly to himself since Diego was pretty much in his apartment already. Tomas closed the door with a gentle click and turned to look at Diego, keeping a good distance between them that both reflected their relationship at that current moment and his desire to keep Diego safe. That distance he started putting slowly but surely between them, had grown quite a bit to the point where he can't remember when was the last time he actually talked to Diego like this. Probably before the accident took place. "There's nothing wrong with me. It's just work. Nothing you have to worry about." Tomas replied back, a lie that he spent so long crafting in his own head that it sounded wrong to his own ears.
Even on his busiest day, he still managed to reach out to Diego.
Tomas walked past Diego to head back into the living room, collecting the different newspapers he collected over the past couple of days. They all mentioned the accident one way or the other. He tossed them into the bin not long after, his eyes momentarily catching onto the headline that described the accident as gruesome. Tomas turned to look at Diego, his arms crossing in front of his chest not long after, a gesture that he did to self-soothe more than anything else, but combined with his expression and the air he was emitting, it could also be seen as a defensive gesture. "I'm not acting strange, Diego. There's nothing wrong with me." Maybe if he said it enough times, he'll grow to believe it. Maybe if he kept feigning ignorance, he'd shroud himself in it and he'd just forget about that goddamn day. Tomas frowned at Diego's words when he brought up the incident with his ex-boyfriend. When he mentioned turning himself in, his eyes widened. "No! No, Diego. Don't do that. I told you, it's nothing." Tomas could feel his heart clench at the sight of tears in Diego's eyes. It hurt to see him nearly crying like that, and it hurt even more that he couldn't do a damn thing about it.
"What the hell is that?!" There was a wall in front of Tomas, the stray bullet that one of the attackers fired hit it instead. "Look at the ground! What the hell is happening?" It was like the ground had moved and stood high in front of Tomas to protect him from the bullet. Then, the ground suddenly collapsed on them, crushing their bodies underneath and it was that horrifying sound that made him snap out of his thoughts. His sweet, and loving boyfriend was still trying to understand what was wrong with him, he was still trying to make him talk about it. But instead, he shut himself off even more.
"I need some space, Diego." Tomas spoke up, his eyes not meeting Diego's for a moment until he finally looked at him. "I need..." Tomas looked down at his hands, the noises of the attackers getting crushed to death replaying in his head over and over again. There was no guarantee he wouldn't do the same thing to Diego if he were to lose control again. "I need a break. From work, from Teo, from..." Tomas' eyes finally moved to look at Diego again. "From us..." He finally concluded, his heart squeezing tightly as he held back the urge to quickly take it all back. "From you."

Something had changed, Diego couldn’t deny that any longer. He had been doing his best to ignore the signs that Tommy was pulling away from him and just give him the benefit of the doubt, just give him some space, but it was only making things worse. Normally they talked and flirted whenever they were working the same scene but Tommy hadn’t been on any of the same calls that Diego had been on for the last few weeks, it was like he was deliberately making sure that he wasn’t there. It didn’t matter how many times Diego tried to call or how many times he texted, the result always went one of two ways – either Tommy brushed him off and promised to get back to him later or he didn’t get a response at all. This wasn’t what their relationship had ever been like before, even before they got together Tommy had promised that he would wait years for him if he had to and ever since they got together things had been going so well for them. They had admittedly hit a bump in the road when Diego’s ex had shown up and everything that he had feared happening to Tommy had come to pass but his ex was gone now and he couldn’t hurt any of them any longer so Diego was struggling to understand why Tommy was still pushing him away. It had been clear that day that his ex had failed to turn Tommy against him like he’d tried to do but slowly something had started to change in Tommy after that and Diego didn’t know how to fix things and get them back on the right track but he knew that he so desperately wanted to. Standing in front of Tommy now and not being able to reach out to him was agony but Diego knew that he had to do it. He couldn’t let Tommy push him away now, not when they finally had the chance to talk regardless of what Tommy had said. Normally Diego wouldn’t even dream of barging into Tommy’s apartment but normally he wouldn’t have to even think about it. The fact that Tommy didn’t want him there hurt more than Diego could even admit to himself right now but he forced himself to push through it anyway, knowing that the only way he was going to get Tommy back was by showing him that he wasn’t going anywhere. “We both know that’s not true, no matter how busy you are with work you always make the time to see me. Or at least you used to,” Diego said, his eyes searching Tommy’s once more. There was something so different about him now and it was enough to make Diego’s heart ache. None of the warmth that was usually there in Tommy’s eyes was there any longer, he seemed completely closed off from him and in that moment it was almost like they were back in the warehouse and Tommy was giving a different answer this time when Diego said that he thought he’d lost him. Turning to watch as Tommy headed into the living room and started tidying, Diego’s gaze came to rest on the newspapers he was collecting together but he couldn’t make out any of the headlines from where he was. When Tommy turned to look at him it was almost like he was a different person. Not only was his face closed off from him but his arms were folded in what Diego could only assume was a defensive gesture and the fact that Tommy even felt the need to be like that around him was enough to make Diego’s heart ache. “Maybe you can’t see it but I’ve noticed and so has Teo. This isn’t you,” he said, needing Tommy to listen. He didn’t want to believe that Tommy had changed his mind about keeping quiet about what had happened but it was the only thing that made sense. Tommy had been so desperate to find Teo before but now he was pulling away from her as well and Diego knew that it had to be because of what had happened that day, he couldn’t think of anything else that would make Tommy act this way. “It’s clearly not nothing,” Diego said, clenching his hands that much tighter at his sides to try and stop them from shaking. Tommy hadn’t even tried to deny that the reason he was acting strange was because of what had happened with his ex, he had simply said that it was nothing so Diego knew that it had to be. “I don’t want you to keep lying to protect me if it’s taking this much of a toll on you.”Diego wasn’t sure what he was expecting Tommy to say next but as he said that he needed some space, to start with Diego wondered if he had even heart him right. Tommy didn’t meet his eyes at first and Diego’s expression turned to one of confusion. “I’ve been trying to give you space,” he said, his eyes searching Tommy’s as he finally looked at him. Tommy seemed to struggle to find his next words but as he said that he needed space from them, from him, Diego felt his heart break. It wasn’t that long ago that they were planning a future together, they were talking about buying a place together, starting a family and getting a dog and now this. Diego stood there in stunned silence for a few moments as he tried to process Tommy’s words, his mouth opening and closing a couple of times as he tried to speak but couldn’t. The words of his exes chose that moment to echo inside his head. “You’re damaged goods.” “You’re good for a bit of fun for a while but you’ll eventually end up alone.” “You’re a monster, you don’t deserve to live let alone be happy.” When he finally found his voice again a couple of tears rolled down his face and his voice broke as he spoke. “Y-you’re breaking up with me?” TOMAS SILVA

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Used to.
He used to talk to Diego about anything and everything, he used to call him before and after work, hell, he even called him during his breaks. He used to do things a lot differently and now... It was all wrong and he couldn't fix it. Tomas couldn't turn back time and fix it. It was all broken, just the mug he once loved that laid shattered on his coffee table. Tomas thought he was doing an okay job keeping up a façade that showed nothing was wrong with him, but he wasn't surprised either that both Diego and Teo had seen right through the act. They knew him better than anyone else, after all.
"Goddamn it, Diego. You're making this harder than it already is. Just drop it, please." Tomas snapped before he could stop himself, his eyes almost glowing again but thankfully, it didn't. It wasn't about Diego's ex-boyfriend but he couldn't say that because then Diego would be able to tell that it was about something else and he didn't want Diego to know. He wanted to keep him far away from the truth because nothing good would ever come out of that.
Tomas knew that Diego had been giving him space. He knew that his boyfriend had been so understanding and so patient with him and Tomas really did appreciate it. He appreciated having his boyfriend in his life, but now, he was ruining it all. Tomas always had a way of ruining things that once meant a lot to him and he was doing the exact same thing to Diego, too. The sight of his tears made Tomas' own eyes fill up with tears. Tomas took a small step away from Diego instead of closing the distance to leave kisses all over Diego's face to make up for those horrible words.
Tomas gave Diego his back, his eyes relaxing on the window, remembering the way he saw multiple people looking outside the window, their horrified expressions forever burned in his mind. Tomas recalled the way his powers effortlessly managed to take the lives of not just one person but multiple people at once, the smell of their blood so heavy in the air. Tomas could see himself doing the exact same thing to his boyfriend if he were to ever lose control and the image was enough to make him feel sick to his stomach. Tomas dipped his head down, tears falling from his eyes, feeling comforted by the fact that Diego can't see him.
"I am." Tomas offered back, wondering how his voice sounded so calm when he was feeling anything but. Tomas lifted his head to catch the way his eyes were glowing in the reflection of the glass window. Monster. "I can't do this anymore, Diego." Tomas spoke up again, bottom lip caught momentarily between his teeth to stop himself from sobbing. Tomas recalled those happy little moments with Diego where they talked about moving in together, adopting a puppy, and then building their own family. He wanted that... He wanted that so goddamn bad. "Have a nice life, Diego." Tomas said instead as his lips parted to let out a quiet sigh. "I trust that you can show yourself the way out."

Every relationship Diego had been in before had ended and most of them had ended pretty badly. With Tommy he had felt like he had finally ended up getting it right, he had found a guy who loved him for who he was and was so willing to accept the fact that he had demons in his past. He hadn’t batted an eye at the revelation of what Diego’s ex had done to him or the fact that he was supernatural and Diego knew that he had finally found the guy that he wanted to build a life with. For the first time in his life he had wanted to settle down and start a family and he had found himself looking forward to having a future with Tommy even if that was only for the rest of his mortal lifetime. Diego knew that he would have stayed with Tommy for as long as the guy would let him but now something had changed and he hated the fact that Tommy was putting so much distance between them. Diego was taken aback when Tommy snapped at him, that was something that he had never done before and Diego instantly fell silent. For a moment he wondered whether this ex had ended up getting to Tommy after all, the first few days after that ordeal everything was fine but somewhere along the line Tommy had started pulling away from him and now it was almost like he was a completely different person. This wasn’t the Tommy who had told him that he would wait years for him to be ready, it wasn’t the same Tommy who had sat by his bedside waiting for him to wake up after he was attacked outside the Grill and it wasn’t the same Tommy who was confiding in him about his past. This Tommy was closed off and distant and Diego had no idea how to make things better. “I’m sorry,” was all he could say, not sure what else he could say or do at this point. He had been trying to give Tommy space like he had wanted and he had been trying to let him figure things out on his own but it seemed like that had only made things worse. He hated that he was crying right now but he couldn’t help it and when Tommy took a step away from him before turning his back on him it only made things worse. Diego wanted to close the distance between them, he wanted to reach out for Tommy and tell him that this wasn’t him but now Diego was starting to wonder if perhaps this really was the person he was now. Tommy had promised that what had happened with his ex hadn’t changed anything between them but it clearly had and it was enough to make Diego hate his ex that much more if that was even possible. He had killed his ex to save Tommy and Teo but now it looked like he had lost Tommy in the process. As Tommy confirmed that he was breaking up with him, Diego’s breath caught in his throat. His heart felt literally shattered into pieces in his chest and the future they should have had disappeared before his eyes. “There isn’t anything I can say that will make you change your mind, is there?” he asked even though he already knew the answer to that question. As Tommy told him to have a nice life before saying that he trusted that he could show himself the way out, Diego felt a sob escape him and he hastily wiped his eyes, not wanting to make things even worse. “Take care of yourself Tomas,” he said as he made his way to the front door, his voice breaking as he used Tommy’s full name for the first time since he had realised that he had fallen for him. “I hope you find what you’re looking for.” There was a time when Tommy had said that Diego was all he wanted but now that was all over. Closing the door behind him, Diego got in his car and drove back to his brother’s place. He managed to hold it together for the most part on the drive back, completely numb to everything that had happened, but as he pulled his car onto the drive and turned off the engine the reality of the situation hit him like a tonne of bricks and he broke down, unable to hold it in any longer. This wasn’t him, in the past when things hadn’t worked out it had sucked but Diego had always found a way to move on. This time was different though, Tommy was the one and he had still screwed things up so he had no idea what he was meant to do now. He had been sitting there for a while when Toni emerged from the house having realised that his car was back but he hadn’t gotten out of it. Before he knew it Toni was opening the driver’s side door. “Did you work things out with Tommy?” he asked although his face fell when he saw that Diego was crying. “Diego, what happened?” he asked, instantly worried as Diego found himself pulled out of the car and into his brother’s arms. “He broke up with me,” Diego sobbed, not offering any resistance as Toni closed the door and led him into the house. Toni said something to Ethan but Diego couldn’t hear what it was. Toni told him to sit down on the sofa which he did and Diego thanked him as he brought over a glass of whiskey for him, making a comment about him needing something stronger than coffee. Toni sat down next to him and asked what had happened to Diego filled them in on everything, making sure not to leave anything out. “I offered to hand myself in over what I did to my ex so he wouldn’t have to keep lying for me but it didn’t make any difference. I did what I did to save him and I lost him anyway. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with me anymore.”TOMAS SILVA & ETHAN ALVAREZ

─ as if the worship of a thing might be the thing that breaks it ─
Tomas.
Hearing Diego call out his name shouldn't have hurt, but it did. Immediately, he wanted to take it all back, he wanted to reach out and soothe his boyfriend ─ ex-boyfriend ─ and wipe away every cruel thing he had just uttered to him, but it was already too late. Diego was already making his way out of his apartment and when the door closed behind him, there was a new type of haunting silence that consumed Tomas whole. He slowly turned to look at the closed door, his heart shattering into million different pieces, each one scattered in a different direction. Tomas had no doubt that nothing was ever going to heal his heart.
Tomas made his way back to his couch where he sat down and held his head between his hands, his shoulders shaking as he sobbed quietly. He had never felt anything like this before. When he broke up with Lynn, it didn't hurt like this. A part of him wanted to reach out for his phone, to explain everything to Diego in one big text but he couldn't do it. Instead, he sat there in his own apartment, unable to do anything other than cry.

Ethan could tell that there was something wrong when he heard the sound of Diego's car pulling up but there was just no trace of Diego anywhere. Toni must have felt the same way too because he was making his way out of the house to head out to Diego. Ethan stood by the door, his eyes focused on the two of them and when he saw them exchange hugs, he immediately knew that something was wrong. Ethan watched as Toni guided Diego into the house, he stepped out of the way and closed the door behind them not long after as he followed them, concerned eyes focused solely on Diego who looked like he had been crying for a while, and seeing him like this was enough to make his heart ache for the other.
Ethan's eyes relaxed on Toni momentarily, nodding his head when Toni talked to him to let the other know he heard him. He leaned back against the wall, his eyes on both Toni and Diego. When Diego explained what had happened, Ethan's eyes widened slightly. "What?" Ethan breathed out, his confusion evident in his expression. "That's weird, I thought he loved you..." Ethan trailed off with a soft sigh falling from his lips. He didn't see any of that coming because he thought they would be together forever, he could see that from miles away but apparently, he was wrong. "I'm sorry, kiddo," Ethan said in a soft voice as he moved to sit down next to Diego, giving his back a gentle rub. It was heartbreaking to know what had happened between Diego and Tomas. Tomas seemed like a good guy. Sure, Ethan had the wrong idea about him when he first saw the guy, but then he proved himself to be a good guy and Ethan had trusted him. But then, he broke Diego's heart and Ethan was pretty sure that they were going to have a talk with the guy because something just didn't make sense. Diego did what he did to save them all, so why did he break up with Diego over it? He thought that Tomas would understand, but apparently, he thought wrong. "You know, I knew something was off about him. He drinks celery juice, who even does that?" Ethan pointed out with a shake of his head following as he continued gently rubbing Diego's back. "It's gonna be okay, kiddo."

Diego had been in more failed relationships than he cared to admit but the truth was that none of them had ever hurt like this. Even when his ex had tried to kill him it hadn’t come close because Diego hadn’t truly loved him. That was something that had been reserved for Tommy and Tommy alone and Diego knew that was why Tommy’s words hurt so much. Tommy was it for him, even now there wasn’t a doubt in Diego’s mind about that. He had never loved before and he knew that he would never love again. The future they’d had planned had all gone up in smoke thanks to his ex and there wasn’t anything that Diego could do to stop it no matter how much he might want to. Toni’s arms around him helped a little but the truth was that Diego still felt broken. For a moment he wondered if this was how his brother had felt when Ethan had died during the war but he knew that this was different. Ethan hadn’t chosen to leave Toni, he had died fighting in the war but Toni had still never talked about it because it had been too painful for him. Now Diego felt like his heart had been shattered into pieces not because anything bad had happened to Tommy, instead it was because Tommy had chosen to walk away after all the promises he had made that he never would. As Ethan said he thought Tommy loved him, a humourless laugh escaped Diego. “So did I but it looks like we were all wrong,” he shrugged, knowing that Toni had thought the same. “If he really loved me then why did he break my heart?” he asked, fresh tears falling as he looked up at Ethan. As Toni sat down next to him and wrapped his arm around his shoulders Diego leaned into his brother and took the little comfort he could from it. This wasn’t how his relationship with Tommy was meant to go, they had planned to spend the rest of their lives together but apparently something had changed for Tommy and Diego had no idea how to deal with that. As Ethan said he was sorry and sat down next to him, Diego couldn’t deny that it was comforting to feel Ethan rubbing his back but he still couldn’t stop thinking about Tommy and all of the awful things he’d said. Leaning forward he picked up the glass and drained the contents in one go, letting out a small hiss as the liquid burned his throat on the way down. “You don’t deserve this Diego and don’t even think about handing yourself in. You did the right thing,” he said before shaking his head as Diego said it made him a monster. “You’re not a monster and you never could be, you saved Tommy and you made sure that your ex couldn’t hurt anyone else. You’re not giving up anymore of your life for him,” Toni said gently and Diego nodded. “Alright, I won’t. I just hope Tommy doesn’t turn me in,” he breathed. His ex had been controlling his life for far too long and Diego knew that he couldn’t let it carry on like that but now Tommy held his fate in his hands. If he chose to tell the police what had happened then there wasn’t anything that Diego could do to stop him. “Do you need me to go round there and talk to him?” Toni asked and Diego shook his head. “No, that will only make things worse.” He didn’t want Tommy to feel like he was being backed into a corner so he hoped that his brother would listen. “You’ve got a point there,” Toni said as Ethan mentioned about Tommy drinking celery juice. As Ethan said that it was going to be okay, Diego shook his head. “No it’s not, he means to me what you two mean to each other. We had our future mapped out and now that’s all gone,” he breathed. “Do you guys mind if I carry on staying here with you?” he asked as he wiped his eyes. They knew that he had been planning on getting a place with Tommy but the truth was that now he couldn’t face doing that on his own. ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan released a soft sigh at Diego's words. That was the million-dollar question, wasn't it? Why did Tomas do it? For so long, it seemed like everything was going great. Ethan had seen the way Tomas looked at Diego when he wasn't paying attention, he noticed all the soft gestures and how he always made sure to fill up Diego's plate during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The way he always took good care of him told Ethan that Tomas really was in love with Diego, so why? "It just doesn't feel right." Ethan mumbled mostly to himself as his eyes relaxed on Diego again. As much as he wanted to think that something had pushed Tomas to break up with Diego, there was nothing that proved that theory. It was just a theory and what he's seeing right now shows that maybe seeing Diego kill his ex-boyfriend had pushed the man away, had scared him off. Ethan frowned slightly when Diego called himself a monster. "Like hell you are." Ethan said before he could stop himself, Toni easily said everything that Ethan had wanted to say at that particular moment. "You did the right thing, Diego. That guy would have kept going after you, he would have kept hurting people." Ethan doubted there was any other way to put a stop to Diego's crazy ex. "He wouldn't do that, would he?" Ethan said with a frown tugging at his features. "I mean, c'mon, like, the guy sent me pictures of houses by mistake the other day. I'm assuming he meant to send it to you. He was planning all of these things, so why would he just..." Ethan trailed off with a sigh falling from his lips. He had such high hopes for Tomas, but he really had to go ahead and disappoint them all, huh?
Ethan's eyes drifted to settle on Toni when he suggested talking to Tomas, his brows quirking up slightly. He knew that Toni was overprotective when it came to Diego, and his family in general, so he had no doubt that the talk wouldn't exactly be a pretty one. He wondered if Diego's answer had changed his mind, or if he was just saying that in front of Diego. Either way, he was going to talk to his husband about this later on.
"I'm sorry, kiddo. I really am." Ethan offered with a soft sigh falling from his lips not long after. His eyes relaxed on Toni momentarily before he nodded his head a few times. "Of course." Ethan said with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You can stay with us as long as you want." Ethan added a moment later.

Diego wished he understood why Tommy had broken up with him, Teo hadn’t seemed to know that it was going to happen because she had only asked if they’d had a fight as Tommy was acting strangely with her as well. Diego had known that there was something different about Tommy for a while, it hadn’t started straight after he’d killed his ex but it hadn’t taken long for something in their relationship to shift and Diego just hadn’t been able to fix it. “I know it doesn’t. It isn’t just me, he said that he needs space from his sister as well and I know how desperate he has been to find Teo since the day we met,” Diego admitted. None of it made any sense and that was what he hated the most. Diego had said about his ex a few times during that last conversation and Tommy had never corrected him and said that it was something else instead so he knew that it had to be that, there wasn’t anything else that he could think of that would cause Tommy to act like this. “I never wanted to become a killer,” Diego sighed. He knew that he was a dragon and some of their kind had ended up gaining bad reputations over the centuries but that wasn’t him and it wasn’t anyone in his family either. They didn’t hurt people, they helped them but Diego knew that Ethan was right when he said that his ex would have kept on hurting people. “I know he would. When I got there and I found out he had someone else there I honestly thought it was one of the girls,” he admitted. He hadn’t told them about that part before but just the thought of something bad happening to one of them had made him feel sick to his stomach. As Ethan said that Tommy wouldn’t turn him in to the cops, Diego shrugged. “I have no idea anymore. I thought I knew who he was but it turns out I was wrong,” he sighed. All of the things that Tommy had said to him that day were replaying over and over in his mind, none of it made any sense and now Diego honestly had no idea what was going to happen. “We were planning on building a life just like this one that you guys have built. We weren’t just talking about buying a house together, we wanted to start a family and we both wanted that together but something changed for him.” It hadn’t for Diego, he still loved Tommy with all his heart but now he was going to have to find a way to let him go and he had no idea how he was going to do that. Toni’s eyes met Ethan’s as his husband looked over at him and Diego wouldn’t be surprised if they still wanted to talk to Tommy but he hoped they wouldn’t because the last thing he wanted was for anything worse to happen. Diego knew that Toni and Ethan both just wanted to look out for him, they were protective of him and they had been ever since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls but they couldn’t change this anymore than he could. It was Ethan who answered first when Diego asked if he could carry on staying with them although Toni soon nodded as well. “Of course you can, this is your home too,” Toni said and Diego offered his brother a smile as Toni squeezed his shoulder. “Thank you, you have no idea how grateful I am,” Diego admitted, offering them both a half smile. Ethan frowned slightly, remembering the day Diego started spreading out photos of Tomas' missing sister, he remembered seeing the concerned look on Tomas' face as they talked about Teodora and now that she was finally back in his life, he wanted to take a break from her too? It smelled sketchy to Ethan and he knew there was something else in that story that Tomas wasn't telling Diego. He wanted to figure out what it was. But if he didn't share it with his own boyfriend, would he share it with Ethan and Toni? "You didn't have any other choice, kiddo." Ethan said with a soft sigh falling from his lips. "Your ex made sure of that."
Putting him behind bars would have done him no good. That asshole was going to find a way to get out of there and go back to his old and sadistic ways of inflicting pain on innocent people, just because they carried the gene of a supernatural being. Ethan's expression turned sympathetic as Diego explained that he feared that his ex had gotten his hands on one of the girls. Ethan nodded his head in an understanding manner because he felt like he knew Tomas too, but apparently, he was very much mistaken. "And that something is strong enough that he pushed you away like this. Especially after making all these plans. I kept expecting him to ask for your hand from Toni or something. I'm sorry, Diego. You don't deserve this kind of pain." Ethan bit down on his bottom lip momentarily. He couldn't figure out what it was and it was irking him a lot more than expected. Just what the hell was Tomas thinking?
Ethan's lips stretched to form a soft smile when Toni offered Diego the same answer, letting him know that this was his home, too. "Of course, kiddo." Ethan ruffled Diego's hair fondly. "Toni is right. This is your home, too." Ethan said with a quick nod of his head following, meaning every word.

This wasn't the way that Diego had ever thought that things would work out. Tomas had made it clear right from that first day that he was in it for the long haul, he had said that he would wait years for him and Diego had believed him but now it looked like he had been wrong about everything. Tomas seemed to have changed his mind about everything and Diego just couldn't understand why. He had pointed out right away that Tommy was a cop and couldn't just look the other way about what he had done but Tommy had assured him that it wasn't a problem and now that seemed to have changed. He didn't understand why Tommy had decided that he needed to take a break from Teo as well, he could only assume that it was because she had been there that day and had seen it all happen too. Diego had made them both complicit and he had done the same with Toni and Ethan, he couldn't take that back now. "I know but it still doesn't change the fact that I took a life," Diego sighed. It didn't matter how awful his ex was, nothing was ever going to change that. Diego knew that even if his ex had been charged he would have pulled some strings with the friends he had on the police force and he would have been released without even spending a night behind bars. That was why Diego hadn't bothered filing a police report, his ex had friends in high places and he would have found a way out of it. His ex had almost killed him before he had moved to Mystic Falls and Diego hadn't been able to stand the thought of his ex going after his family next. "To be honest I thought we were heading in that direction too. I'd even started looking at engagement rings," Diego admitted. "I tried getting him to tell me what was going on but he just shut me out and the way he spoke was cruel. It's like he's a completely different person." Diego had thought that offering to turn himself in would at least help Tommy move on from it all but Tommy had told him not to although now Diego wasn't sure just how long he was going to be comfortable keeping it to himself for. "I knew what we had was too good to be true but he had me believing that I deserved to be happy. I never knew it could hurt like this." He had never been in love before and Diego knew that Tommy was the one for him so he wasn't going to find it again but deep down he knew that was probably a good thing because Diego knew that he never wanted to experience a pain like this again. As Toni and Ethan both said this was his home too, Diego felt a half smile touch his lips. "Thank you," he said sincerely. ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan nodded his head slowly in an understanding manner. "But in doing so, you saved three lives and possibly more." By killing his ex, he had saved not only himself but Tomas and his sister. "Your ex was never going to stop, Diego. He didn't want to stop." Ethan said with a gentle shrug of his shoulders following, his eyes relaxing on the other once again, watching him.
"Oh." Ethan trailed off with a sad sigh falling from his lips when Diego revealed that he thought they were heading in that direction too. The revelation that he had started looking at engagement rings made his heart squeeze tightly. "I'm sorry, kiddo..." Ethan wanted to understand why Tomas would ever do such a thing when he looked absolutely in love with Diego. Something just didn't make sense but Ethan had no way of knowing. "That's so... messed up." Ethan said with a frown tugging at his features when Diego revealed that Tomas had been cruel to him in the way that he spoke. "How does someone completely change like that? Unless he was pretending this whole time but that doesn't make any sense either? No one is that good at pretending or lying, for that matter." Ethan gnawed on his bottom lip for a moment, completely consumed by his own thoughts for a second as he tried to decipher why Tomas had started acting that way out of the blue. It just didn't make any sense.
"You do deserve to be happy, kiddo." Ethan gently rubbed his back in a soothing manner, his eyes momentarily moving to rest on Antonio. "It sucks that you have to go through this. But, hey, you'll get through this, okay? I know it doesn't look like it right now but you're one of the strongest people I've ever met, Diego. If anyone can push through this, it's you. But your feelings are absolutely valid, just know that, okay? You can be sad and cry about it, just don't bottle it up." Ethan spoke in a soft voice as he continued gently rubbing his back. "Of course, kiddo. It's the least that I can do." He replied when the other thanked him.
