This really wasn’t the plan back when they first met, Danny hadn’t broken up with Ethan long before he’d gone to Hawaii and he had been there to learn as much as he could about his family’s heritage so he could help Scott and the others. He’d had some downtime of course and he had used most of that to go surfing and, through that, he had ended up spending as much of that time with Riley as he could. It was only meant to be surf lessons to start with but it had quickly turned into something more and the summer romance they’d found themselves in and left a lasting impression on his heart. Danny hadn’t thought that he would get to see Riley again but their paths had crossed again in Mystic Falls and Riley had said that he’d planned on heading to Beacon Hills to rekindle that romance if they hadn’t found each other here and Danny believed him. What they had was a love for the ages and Danny knew that none of what was going on now was fair on either of them. He’d had to make Riley promise that he would move on if they weren’t able to find a way to bring him back because Danny wanted him to be happy but it still felt wrong somehow. He wasn’t sure how much time they had left together but Danny knew that he wanted to make the most of it. “I don’t doubt that. What happened between us wasn’t meant to be serious but I still felt like you were taking a part of me with you,” he said gently. He had been in relationships before but he had never felt that strongly about any of his exes and it had made him even happier when their paths had crossed again, even if Riley had been struggling to keep his shift under control at the time. They’d had to say goodbye when Riley had left Hawaii and Riley had been taken from him again during the ritual to free Klaus’s werewolf side. There was a part of Danny that had known that what they’d had was going too smoothly after that, he had been living with the brand on his chest for a while now but it still felt like he was living on borrowed time and he wasn’t sure if they were going to get another chance this time. That didn’t mean that he couldn’t hope that they would, though, and Danny wrapped his arms around Riley’s waist as he kissed him back happily. “You’ll hear it every day that I’m able to say it,” Danny assured him gently. He knew that it wasn’t fair of him to ask Riley to marry him given that he didn’t know how long he had left but Danny was certain that his heart belonged to Riley and he wanted to make sure that Riley knew that too. “You sound so certain,” Danny said, a half smile touching his lips as Riley said he knew that they were going to get the chance to have their wedding. He truly hoped that they would get that chance but he wasn’t filled with quite the same confidence that Riley was, not when he knew the devastation that the brand had caused to his family in the past. Danny knew that he and Riley had powerful friends and there was a chance that he might be able to be brought back though and that hope was something that he knew he needed to hold onto. “You’re right about that. I would have loved Jackson to be there too but I’m not sure he’ll ever come back over from London,” he admitted. He still missed his best friend even now but he knew that Jackson had a life over there and it wasn’t one that Danny felt right tearing him away from after everything that he had been through in Beacon Hills. Riley’s next words were enough to draw a proper smile to Danny’s face and he nodded. “You’re right, it’s not,” he agreed. “That sounds perfect to me,” he said gently. Once they’d ordered it didn’t take long for the food and bottle to be brought over and Danny paid for everything before taking Riley’s hand in his and leading the way outside. Driving back to their place, Danny kissed Riley once more as soon as they were inside. “You sort out the food, I need to get something,” he said before disappearing into their bedroom. Pulling out the drawer of the desk he’d used while studying, he lifted away the false bottom and pulled out the box he had hidden away in there a few months ago. The only other thing in there were letters he’d written for Riley, his parents and their friends for when the time came but the box in his hands was without a doubt the most important right now. With the box in hand he made his way back to Riley and he dropped to one knee before opening the box to show the ring inside. “I bought this for you a while ago but I wasn’t sure that I should ask with this hanging over us. Now I want to do it right so Riley, will you marry me?” he asked, his eyes locked on Riley’s as he spoke. He knew that he had already asked the question earlier and Riley had said yes but he hadn’t been on one knee and he hadn’t had the ring so it only felt right to do it properly. RILEY PARKER

Riley knew that Danny had just been trying to prepare him for a life that might have to be lived without him, but making the promise that he wouldn’t live that life alone and broken had torn at something inside of him. Danny had been the one to make his heart whole in the first place and he couldn’t imagine that it would ever be that way again without him. All thoughts of that, all wounds that promise had carved into his heart vanished with the proposal. Maybe the future was still dark, but there was something new and bright in it now – a ring to reach for, gold maybe rather than brass, but still shining out there for them both to reach for.
Mentally, emotionally, Riley wrapped his hand around it now, feeling the possibility for a married life cradled in his hand. He grinned at Danny, the warmth rising high in his chest to swallow them both up. ”I guess the universe knew way more than either one of us did then. Things could’ve gone differently, but I hoped then that we’d end up somewhere like this together and maybe holding onto that thought was what brought us together in the end.” He wasn’t going to question it too far, because they had what they’d both not let themselves hope for all the way back then. Holding Danny close, Riley lost himself in that kiss until Danny’s reassurances wrapped around him the same way his arms did. ”And I’ll remember it every day afterwards,” he promised. Maybe that would be all he could find comfort in for a while but he would do that, every memory held close.
”With you, I’m always certain.” And he had been from the very start, knowing back then that when he emerged spluttering from the waves he’d just been tossed into, Danny’s hand would be right there for him to pick himself up again. The pack had gathered around them afterwards, accepting him maybe because they could see the love he had for Danny, some of the best people he’d ever known becoming the family he’d always wanted. ”For this?” Riley questioned, a grin tugging at his lips. ”For this I’m sure he’d come back. If not, we’ll go there, another trip for the list of all amazing things we’re still gonna do together.” He wasn’t about to call it a bucket list, but it was all the things he wanted to be able to do with Danny before one day – long, long in the future – they did end up losing one another.
Lit up by the future that had exploded from Danny’s proposal, he was beaming back at Danny as they started to pack up. He’d head home with his fiancé and alone they’d really celebrate all of this. It felt like he was walking on air as they started out, the food and champagne dangling from one hand, the other arm wrapped around Danny. He kept a hand on Danny as they drove, pulling him back in for another kiss as soon as they were back home. ”Sure,” he murmured lightly, watching with a smile as Danny headed out of the room. He busied himself grabbing plates, setting out the food, his gaze flicking up to the bedroom door every few seconds. The plates were set out on the table, glasses too, the only thing left to do was popping open the bottle, but then Danny was in front of him.
His eyes started to fill as Danny dropped to one knee in front of him – happy tears, so many happy tears coming to the surface. Riley blinked them away, his smile so freaking wide it felt like it was emanating from the sun that had grown so bright in his chest. ”I’m so glad you did. I want this for us so badly,” he whispered. It couldn’t have been more right for the two of them with the way things were. Hearing the words, that question had Riley letting out a watery little laugh. He bit his lip, nodding and reaching out to settle his hand lightly against Danny’s chest. ”Yes,” he promised. ”I’ll marry you. The man I love more than I ever thought I could love anybody. My husband.” Slowly he sank to his knees in front of Danny, tears spilling down his cheeks as he drew him into another kiss to seal their proposal.

Danny had been trying to deal with a lot when he’d gone to Hawaii the summer he’d met Riley. He had broken up with Ethan so the guy wouldn’t feel like he had to stay in Beacon Hills after losing his twin brother and he’d started learning more about his heritage from his grandparents. They had warned him about the curse he could be opening himself up to if he made the decision his parents hadn’t been able to bring themselves to make but the truth was that he didn’t regret any of it. Meeting Riley was only meant to be a bit of summer fun that had started with surfing lessons the guy had desperately needed but it had turned into something so much more. Danny had given his heart away without realising it and it was only when their paths crossed again that he had figured that out. “I always hoped we’d have this as well. These last few years with you have been better than I ever could have imagined,” Danny said gently. It had been almost six years since they had found each other again and they’d faced so much together during that time but they had always found their way through it. Danny still had hope that this time wouldn’t be any different but no matter what he knew that he was never going to give up the hope that he would see Riley again. “You’d better,” he said, a small smile touching his lips as he looked over at Riley. “You changed my life and I’ll never be able to thank you enough for that.”As Riley said that he was always certain with him, Danny’s expression softened. “I want all of that for us so much.” He wanted to marry Riley and build a life together with him. Danny had always had a habit of picking the wrong guys before Riley came along but this time he knew that he had finally managed to get it right. He had found someone who would protect his heart rather than break it and he knew that he would fight for that future with everything he had. Just the thought that he might be taken away before they got the chance to make it a reality was enough to make Danny’s heart ache but he knew that he needed to try and stay positive. He had lost Riley during Klaus’s ritual but Henrik and Lukas had brought Riley back to him back then and Danny really hoped that if the worst did happen to him then he would find his way back to Riley too. “I’ll definitely ask but if not it would be great to go over there and see him. I’ve always wanted to visit London,” Danny admitted. There was so much that he had always wanted to do and he honestly hoped that he would get to share all of that with Riley one day. Danny knew that asking Riley to marry him might have seemed like a spur of the moment thing but the truth was that it wasn’t. It was something that he had been thinking about for a long time and a while ago he had even gone out and bought a ring. It had stayed tucked away in the drawer so he could ask Riley after this was all over but Danny knew deep down that he hadn’t wanted to wait. He had asked Riley back at the Grill but now he wanted to do things right so he left Riley to sort out the food while he went to retrieve the ring. Danny had hesitated at the Grill because he hadn’t wanted to put Riley through any more pain than he already was if it wasn’t possible for him to be brought back to life but Riley had insisted he’d wanted to know and Danny didn’t regret asking. If nothing else it would mean that Riley would always have a symbol of how much Danny loved him. Returning to where Riley was, Danny didn’t hesitate in dropping to one knee and every instinct was screaming at him to wipe Riley’s tears away as they gathered in his eyes but he forced himself to stay where he was, determined to do this right. “I do too,” he breathed. Danny knew there were those who might think they were crazy considering they were both still young but Danny knew he had found the person he wanted to spend his life with and he knew that Riley had too so he really didn’t see the point in waiting. Danny’s breath caught in his throat as Riley called him his husband and he kissed Riley back happily, a few tears spilling over his own lashes to roll down his face. “I love the sound of that – your husband,” he said at last as he finally pulled back a little, lifting the ring out of the box and sliding it onto Riley’s finger. “I’ll do all I can to make that happen.” Danny still felt the weight of the curse hanging over them but he had someone to fight for and he knew that he was going to fight for Riley and their future together until his last breath. In his heart Riley knew that hoping for more than a few years with the love of your life wasn’t greedy, but it felt that way now. There had been tragedies in the years they’d spent together, but there had also been more blessings than he’d ever thought were possible. Some didn’t get a single one, their lives seemingly cursed from birth to death. For a time Riley had thought his would be that way, but Danny had shown him that even at their darkest moments they had more than most by being together. Riley could practically see the gulf of a future without Danny opening up like a dark, yawing hole beneath him. He reached past it though, smiling at Danny, even if the edges of his expression were tinged with sadness. ”We will have it,” he said hoarsely. He wouldn’t promise it, just hope for it with everything he had. ”You don’t have to thank me. We changed each other’s lives.” It was a gift that went both ways, one Riley would hold on to for an eternity. He pressed his lips against Danny’s again, trying to seal those words there between them.
Did the darach know what they were costing the people they were killing? What futures they were crushing because of something that had happened so far back that nobody even knew the truth about it now. Surely there was a time when they realised that enough have been lost to make up for whatever he believed their family had been cost. Riley had hoped that there’d be a way they could talk to them in the end, but with each passing day it had felt less and less like they had a chance. ”We still have a chance for it,” Riley said hoarsely, settling his hand on Danny’s cheek, running a thumb lightly over his cheekbone. ”We just have to keep the faith.” And he’d hold onto it like it was his only lifeline if Danny ended up taken from them. There were so many things both of them still wanted to do, places they wanted to see, people to meet. Riley wasn’t sure how Jackson would take to him, but he wanted to meet Danny’s best friend all the same. ”How about for our honeymoon?” Riley asked with a smile. ”If he can’t come here, then we go there to include him in it all. We can do the whole tourist thing. I’ve never been either.” Probably only because his parents had never been asked to work there. That future was still a bright light off in the distance that they’d work towards as Riley began to set out the food. This would just be another twist in the road for them to navigate before – cheesily – they got their happy ever after. It would be agonising while they were going through it, but there was something better on the other side of it all. Riley smiled at the thought, they weren’t the first in their friends group to go through something horrific. He couldn’t really imagine it, but Elijah and Tatia had been separated for a thousand years before they got their second chance. The smile brightened, growing watery as Danny came back, dropping to one knee in front of him. ”Becoming your husband is going to be the best thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Riley promised. He looked down at his finger, at the ring that sealed their relationship and felt something inside of him melt. ”We’ll do everything possible,” he confirmed. Drawing in a deep breath to steady himself, Riley kissed his fiancé. ”We should eat,” he said lightly. ”We’ve got a wedding to plan, after all.” Standing slowly, Riley drew Danny up to his feet with him. There was so much to do on top of all the research into stopping what was coming for Danny, but he knew that the pack would be behind them through all of this too.
