It had been a while since Danny had found himself branded in the same way that so many members of his family who had ended up losing their lives had been. He still wasn’t sure who was responsible for marking him in that way but he had been working with his friends to try and figure out a way to stop his life being taken as well and he had also been working with Henrik when he could. The guy had helped him figure out how the mark worked and Danny was hopeful that if it could work as a tether letting the person responsible know where to find him then perhaps it could be used to track down that person as well. He hadn’t yet figured out how to do that but he was working on it and he knew that he wasn’t going to give up. Deep down Danny knew that he probably should have told his parents and the rest of his family about what was going on but he knew that he couldn’t do that. It would only worry them and they were all working so hard to find a way to break the family’s curse that he knew he just had to stay hopeful. He was doing his best to remain positive for Riley and his friends even though underneath it all the truth was that Danny was terrified, he didn’t want to die and if he was honest he wasn’t sure that he would ever feel ready for what to come, but he knew that he had to be brave for them all in case they weren’t able to find a way to break the curse after all because he knew that the last thing he wanted was for any of them to feel guilty about it. One thing Danny had realised pretty quickly was that he didn’t want trying to find a way of breaking the curse to completely consume his life, he wanted to make the most of every moment he had left and he had been trying to do just that. As it was he had ended up having a few more years than he’d thought that he would have and the truth was that he was grateful for all of them. He was still throwing himself into school like Riley and his friends were and doing all of the things that a normal guy his age would do and he was also doing his best to help the pack as much as he could. Danny knew that it would have been easy to let his fear consume him completely but he refused to let that happen. When he died, whether that was now or a long way in the future if he did manage to survive this, he knew that he wanted to make sure that he’d lived his life without any regrets and that meant carrying on as normal as much as he could. That day he and Riley had both had class and they had then headed back to their place to hit the books once more to try and find a way to break the curse. They had been doing that for a while when Danny looked up and noticed that time was getting on. “Alright, that’s enough for today. We need a change of scenery,” he said decisively as he closed the book he had been reading and got to his feet before holding his hands out to Riley. “Come on, time to get changed because we’re going out,” he said as he offered his boyfriend a smile. “How does a meal at the Grill followed by a few games of pool and general relaxation time sound?” he suggested, knowing that it was probably something that they both needed right now. Eventually you stopped looking over your shoulder so much. With the brand still carved onto Danny’s stomach he shouldn’t have done, it had to mean the people who wanted his family dear were still lurking out there somewhere, but it had been months and Danny was still with them. Riley had put every waking minute into trying to find a way out of the curse at first, bringing home stacks of books that Stiles hoarded like gold, working his way through them when Danny was in classes or they were spending what were now very rare nights apart. Danny had warned him there was no way of getting rid of the mark, the curse always came true, maybe he was right. Still, time had spun out and the prediction hadn’t come true. They were making some progress, enough, with Henrik’s help, that it felt like they had a real chance here. Alright, maybe it had left them complacent but it felt good not to walk down every street feeling as though there were a target on Danny’s back and the future they’d planned to have together before the brand had appeared.
Little moments, one laid atop another, covered some of the fear that remained. They weren’t wasting a minute together, not with the chance still there that any day could be their last. Riley wasn’t going to let it happen with a single regret left burning in him. Even ones like this, just sprawled around their place, studying, felt a little more poignant. Riley had kicked off his boots when they’d gotten back, stretching out on the sofa just far enough that he could feel the warmth of Danny’s thigh against his calf, that little connection he could bask in while the water management crisis of England’s waterways in the 1970s slowly rotted his brain.
He felt Danny get up more than he did see him. Riley made a small sound, maybe something like protest, little lines springing up between his brows before it hit him. He propped the book on his stomach, automatically reaching out to take one of Danny’s hands as they were offered. ”Blowing off studying for dinner and a couple of games of pool? You’re a bad influence.” Riley mock narrowed his eyes at his boyfriend, pretending to consider it for a moment. He was already shoving the book aside though. England’s fish and beavers could wait until later, he still had three days to finish his case study on them. That was plenty of time, especially when they had so much living to cram in.
Slowly, he took Danny’s other hand and got to his feet. His smile was slow and lazy, his fingers squeezing Danny’s lightly as he twirled, backing up towards the door and the boots he’d kicked off. One hand went to Danny’s waist as he got there, nudging his boyfriend back against the door to kiss him before he drew back just far enough to look into those warm, dark eyes he loved. ”That actually sounds pretty good. Especially …” Riley narrowed his eyes again, a grin creasing his face. ”If I manage to kick your ass at pool this time. I’ve gotta win some time right? If you let me.” He chuckled at the suggestion. Sport of any kind wasn’t his thing, but he wasn’t bad at pool so to speak, he just wasn’t as good at it as Danny was. It was all that hand eye coordination.

Danny had been able to explain to his friends what the brand that now marked his skin meant but the truth was that he hadn’t been able to come clean to his parents. He knew that they loved him and they had proved time and time again that they respected his decision to embrace his druid heritage but he knew that they would never be able to accept that he might die like so many other members of their family had done in the past. It was that fear that had kept his parents from embracing that side of themselves in the first place, instead they had lived their lives denying their heritage and Danny knew that he could have joined them in that but the truth is that wasn’t him. He hadn’t known the others too well back in Beacon Hills but he had known that they’d needed help finding a way to free Allison and Danny didn’t regret making the decisions he had done one bit. All of those choices had brought him to Mystic Falls in the first place and they’d helped shape him into the person he was today. Not only that but they had given him the chance to explore being in a real relationship with Riley and that was something that Danny was never going to take for granted. Even just moments like this studying together were ones that Danny knew that he would always cherish. He wasn’t sure how much time he had left but they were doing their best to find a way to break the curse and his friends were doing the same so he knew that he just had to trust that sooner or later they would find a way to save him from the same fate that had claimed the lives of his family before. The suggestion of getting out of there and heading to the Grill was one that Danny had been toying with for a while now but the moment Riley spoke he knew that he had done the right thing and Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “I am but you love me for it,” he chuckled. He knew how lucky he was to have been able to build a life like this with Riley and it was something worth fighting for as far as Danny was concerned but it was also something that he wanted to enjoy while he could. Helping Riley to his feet, a smile touched Danny’s lips as Riley moved them so that his back was against the door and he didn’t hesitate in kissing Riley back, his hand moving to rest against Riley’s cheek as he did so. “Smooth, very smooth,” he said, his eyes full of nothing but love for Riley as he leaned forward and stole another kiss. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Now why would I ever want to let you win?” he teased, his expression turning to one of amusement as he looked over at his boyfriend. Riley wasn’t bad at pool but he had a long way to go before he’d be able to do that. Danny was normally happy to take it easy on him a little but letting someone win wasn’t something that he had ever been very good at. “Consider it practice, the more you get the more chance you have of beating me fair and square,” he grinned before grabbing his car keys, wallet and phone from the side. “Shall we go?”RILEY PARKER

Memories of Hawaii had been held onto with a white knuckled grip. Riley had known the moment they’d landed there that his dad wouldn’t stay long, had prayed after that very first kiss with Danny that for once he’d been wrong, but he hadn’t been. After just a few short weeks he’d had to pack up his stuff from the cottage down on the beach, and those memories that had been forged on the beach, out on the surf, with the most incredible guy he’d ever met. That was all you take with you when your life was meant skipping from one town to the next, always on the whims of two parents who seemed to forget they even had a kid most of the time. Settling in Mystic Falls had given him so much more. He’d been able to unpack those memories and create so many more – good and bad – now, even if he forced himself not to do it consciously most of the time, Riley found himself doing it again.
Little moments, single glances, the most insignificant things were being filed away. If he lost all of this tomorrow he wanted to be able to wrap every one of those images around him, to keep them and Danny close. Danny’s laugh was one of those layers, warm, slipping across his skin like silk, tempting – oh and he knew it. Riley growled lightly as he tapped his fingers on the cover of his textbook, blue irises peering through the screen of long lashes. ”Maybe,” he drawled lightly, his expression softening as he stroked his thumb across the palm of Danny’s hand. ”For that and a thousand other things.” Enough that the temptation barely had to be waved at him for him to be shoving the books aside. He’d always been a straight A student, even with the constant movement, would catch up no matter how much time they took out. There were way more important things than slaving over school right now. Way more important people to focus on.
On his feet, Riley did just that. Nudging Danny back against the door, shrugging off the gloom of ecology class with a kiss that had Danny smile and his hand coming up to his cheek. Riley’s own smile broadened, his lips caught again by Danny’s as he basked in the compliment. ”Always. Can you blame me for taking the opportunity?” One sandy brow winged, a chuckle rough in his throat. Riley hummed lightly in consideration, his thumb sweeping up and down Danny’s side. ”Because you love me and don’t wanna see me start crying in public?” he joked. Grumbling, Riley patted his boyfriend’s side and stepped back. He stooped, jamming his feet into his boots before he laced them up. His wallet and keys were plucked out of the backpack he’d dropped by the couch, shoved into the pockets of worn jeans. ”One of these days I’ll have to hire some pro to teach me without saying a word. Get all sneaky about it.” Trailing back, he held his hand out to Danny and opened the door. ”All ready when you are. You wanna call the others? See if they’re free or should we go solo?” He inched out the door, drawing Danny with him with their joined hands. The pack all together was … a behemoth … sometimes you wanted it and sometimes there was nothing you wanted more than that little two person cocoon.

Danny had known the risks when he decided to embrace his Druid heritage to help the others out and he had accepted that a long time ago. His parents hadn’t wanted him to put his life on the line like that but as far as he was concerned it had been worth it and the truth was that he really didn’t regret it. Right now he felt like he was a ticking time bomb, though. He had been branded by whatever curse had claimed the lives of so many of his family members and he knew that chances were it would claim his life too but he didn’t know how long he had. It was for that reason that he was determined to make the most of every moment he had with the people he loved. He didn’t know what came next for Druids so he had no idea where he would end up but he had a gut feeling that it wouldn’t be as easy for him to be brought back as it would for those who end up on the Other Side. He knew he wasn’t going to get his hopes up about being given a second chance at life the way his friends and Riley had so all he could do was make the most of whatever time he had. That meant spending as much time with Riley and his friends as he could. Danny had been doing his best to keep the fact that he was scared to himself because he wasn’t good at being vulnerable around others. Riley always saw through it but he hoped it worked with the others at the very least. “I knew it,” Danny said, a smile touching his lips as he turned his hand to capture Riley’s in his own before lifting their joined hands and pressing a kiss to Riley’s knuckles. It had seemed so surreal to find that Riley had moved to Mystic Falls all those years ago as well but they had been together ever since then and Danny loved him completely. It was only meant to be a summer romance but it had turned into so much more than that during their time together and no matter what happened or where he ended up Danny knew that was something that he would always hold on to. It wasn’t long before Riley was on his feet and Danny didn’t offer any resistance as Riley nudged him back against the door, a smile touching his lips as he poured everything he had into that kiss. “Not at all,” Danny grinned as Riley asked if he could blame him for taking the chance. “I love you so much. You know that, right?” he asked gently, feeling the need to tell Riley in that moment. The truth was that Danny had no idea what was going to happen or when but if the worst did happen then he knew that he didn’t want Riley to ever doubt the way Danny felt about him. As Riley spoke again, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “That’s where you’re wrong, I would like to see that,” he joked. Hearing Riley’s next words was enough to make Danny laugh. “I’d like to see you try, then you’ll see I’ve actually been taking it easy on you this whole time,” he grinned, unable to resist teasing his boyfriend a little more. Taking Riley’s hand, Danny thought about it as he asked if he wanted to call the others before shaking his head. “Let’s keep this as just us, it can be an impromptu date night,” he suggested as they made their way outside and in the direction of the car. “I love spending time with the others but I’d like to have you to myself tonight.”RILEY PARKER

How do you look down the barrel of a gun and decide not to move even when you knew it was eventually going to fire and kill you? Danny’s dilemma wasn’t as black and white as that, but it was still that choice to carry on facing the danger even when he knew that taking that first step was more than likely going to get him killed. He hadn’t known just how brave he was when he’d first seen Danny on that beach, but every single day since he’d seen that courage bright and shining and at the core of him, like one of those white knights in all that historical movies those guys that strapped their armour on and stepped up to face down the monster. His parents hadn’t, and although he respected and liked both of them, Riley almost wished they had done and had found some way to stop the darachs who kept carving away parts of their family, so that they wouldn’t have ended up here, waiting for the worst to happen.
He could’ve tried to talk Danny into running, Riley supposed, but the Danny he knew and loved with every ounce of his being wouldn’t have done that. That Danny would stand in front of that gun as long as was needed to protect his friends, to save their lives. Riley felt his heart beat syrup slow in his chest as Danny kissed his knuckles, he brushed his thumb over the curve of Danny’s lower lip, grinning right back at him. ”How can I not love the guy who literally changed my world?” he asked lightly, although his throat went tight at the sentiment. He hadn’t said it aloud, but, how his world was going to change without Danny being right there at the centre of it was terrifying him.
It wasn’t going to be the same, but Riley was willing to keep his world centred around the memory of Danny if that ended up all that he had left. Little memories of moments like this stamped so deep in his memory that they ended up feeling like they were a part of his DNA. Riley stayed there, feeling Danny’s touch at his cheek, his lips curve almost against his own. ”I know, and I’m never going to forget that you do. It means everything to me,” he promised hoarsely, pressing his lips against Danny’s confirmation of his words. ”I love you too.” A vow whispered against Danny’s mouth. That vow was doing to endure long after that gun went off, whether they managed to bring Danny back to them, or terrifyingly, they couldn’t.
Riley was lucky he didn’t cry now as Danny took that sweet moment and spun it out into a joke. He laughed, those tears just a burn at the back of his eyeballs for the moment. His fingers flexed on Danny’s side, feeling the laugh roll through him. ”Now that’s mean,” he rumbled softly, not taking a word of it seriously. ”You’ve been … you’re an asshole, but one I absolutely adore.” Blue eyes narrowed for a moment, but Riley snorted as their hands joined again. His fingers flexed, then his grip tightened as they headed outside and towards Danny’s car. ”I’m not gonna grumble about that. I love getting you all to myself.” Especially now. He knew that the others were just as keen about getting as much time with Danny as possible, when they knew that time was running short, but they understood. ”I’m gonna get greedy with that. Just burrowing away, drinking all of this in. Burgers, pool and a night with my boyfriend, what’s not to adore?” That little hollow in the pit of his stomach, that was what not to adore. Riley pushed it away as he got in on the passenger side of the car though, and immediately settled his hand on Danny’s thigh, like he needed that contact.

Danny knew that he could have fled the moment the brand was seared into his skin and no one would have blamed him. Ever since then he had been living on borrowed time and even though he had been doing his best to stay strong when he was around Riley and his friends, the truth was that he was terrified. So many of his family had lost their lives to this curse and he knew that it was why his parents had both turned their backs on their Druid heritage in the first place. They had wanted him to do the same thing but he had chosen to embrace his heritage in order to help his friends and the truth was that he didn’t regret it. Riley might have planned on tracking him down and visiting him in Beacon Hills but it wouldn’t have been the same as being able to see each other every day and be together like this. No matter what happened Danny knew that he wouldn’t take back what he and Riley had for anything in the world. As Riley spoke, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “You changed my world as well, I wouldn’t change this for anything,” Danny assured him. He knew that what they had was special and even though Danny knew that it had an expiration date he knew that he wanted to hold onto it for as long as possible. The thought of leaving Riley behind hurt and if there was a way to stop that from happening then Danny knew that he would take it but so far they had yet to find a way to stop this. He didn’t want Riley to end up pining over him when he was gone, he wanted Riley to be happy but he also knew that he couldn’t force Riley to do something that he didn’t want to do. He still had to try, though, and as Riley said that the fact that Danny loved him meant everything to him Danny couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face as he kissed Riley back. “It means everything to me too,” he assured him, his heart fluttering as Riley said that he loved him too. “I’m always going to love you but if the worst happens then know that you have my blessing to move on. I want you to be happy,” he said gently. He couldn’t deny that it hurt to even say those words out loud but he knew that he meant them. He wanted Riley to be happy with him but if they couldn’t be together then he knew that he still wanted Riley to find happiness one day and Danny didn’t want the memory of him to hold him back. “Maybe but I can get away with it,” Danny teased as Riley said he was an asshole, a smile touching his lips as Riley said that he adored him. “The feeling is mutual,” Danny assured him. Riley did mean the world to him, he had been in relationships before but he had never felt like this about anyone and that was something that he knew that he was always going to hold onto even if that meant carrying it with him to Heaven or wherever else he might end up. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that he had found the one in Riley, he was the only person that Danny wanted to wake up next to every morning and if things worked out and he did end up getting the chance to have a future then Danny knew that he wanted that future to be with Riley. Riley’s next words were enough to bring a smile to Danny’s face. “I love having you all to myself as well. I want that as much as possible,” he admitted. He knew that he would never grow tired of spending time with Riley and those were the memories that he was going to hold onto. “You can get greedy with it as much as you like, we’ll do this as much as we can before...” he said, his voice trailing off as he found himself unable to finish that sentence out loud. Before it was all ripped away from them. Letting out a sigh, Danny led the way outside and climbed into the driver’s side, letting his hand rest on Riley’s once he’d started the car and pulled out onto the road. It didn’t take them long to reach the Grill and once they were there he pulled into a space and climbed out before holding his hand out to Riley. “Let’s do this.”RILEY PARKER

There were all those stupid sayings about if wishes were horses, but it didn’t mean Riley was going to stop making them. He’d held onto hope for years, usually thrusting a hand up above the metaphorical waters without knowing there would be anyone out there to take a hold on him. He’d trodden water anyway, scrambling to keep swimming until there was someone right there alongside him. Fingers to take his own and haul him out onto sand, those same fingers to hold onto him when he’d been pulled back from somewhere they could reach to. Love had been inevitable, all the understandable desires to keep it flooding in afterwards. When Danny wasn’t there anymore … while he was gone (for a time only, no matter what happened he wouldn’t believe it was forever), he’d keep his hand out, waiting to feel those fingers close back around his, waiting to pull Danny from the waters. He wouldn’t lose that without his boyfriend there. Danny had given him that faith and that was as much a lifejacket in this life as anything.
The warmth of Danny’s skin settled like a blanket over his own and Riley curled into it, into him and that kiss. Lips lingering in a way he could stamp deep into his memory, little details etched against them that he’d feel the same way he would Danny’s hands. A part of him now. ”Danny … I can’t,” Riley breathed, his brow furrowing as he shook his head. ”My happy is with you. It has always has been. Even … if the worst happens … that’s not going to change. You’re going to be here, and I’m going to hold onto that. Blessing or not, I’m not packing any of this away.” He didn’t have to beg, Danny had always known what this had been to him, the truth murmured between them in those confessions of love. His future had formed in them, not centred just around Danny, but around both of them. It had shrunk once and would again, but it wasn’t going to vanish while he still had breath in his lungs to say those words aloud.
Tossed out in laughter, rolling down his cheeks in salty trails if he let himself sink into the sad instead of the happy Danny was spinning around them now. Riley tipped his head to one side and hummed lightly, his throat feeling thick around the sound. ”I was gonna argue, but you’re right. I look at you and all of that goes away.” Riley tugged his boyfriend close as they stepped outside, pressing his lips to the side of Danny’s head, whispering into his temple. ”Good.” That adoration was going to have to get them both through this. His hope that they’d find a way to stop the curse from coming to fruition remained candle bright in his chest, but in the meantime they were going to take every opportunity possible to make sure that they stretched the now out as far as possible, making as wide a foundation for the future as possible. ”I’m gonna be greedy enough to piss the pack off with it,” Riley said hoarsely, drawing Danny close for a moment before he let him pull away and head to the other side of the car. Stiles was going to have to put up with it.
Riley pushed the thought from his head as they drove over to the Grill. His hand resting on his thigh as Danny drove, fingers slotted between Danny’s, an anchor holding them together through it all. Each time they cut it free for a moment they came back. Hands joining, his tugging lightly as he stepped away from the car and towards the Grill. Blue eyes narrowed faintly as Riley grinned. ”Maybe we should even this up huh? How would you feel about wearing a blindfold for this? Tying one hand behind your back? Just taking pity on me?” He pursed his lips, brows rising hopefully. Retrieving one of the pool cues from the rack though, Riley knew that this was going to be all competition, and all soft commiseration after – that he wasn’t going to argue about. ”You wanna break?” Honestly, it wasn’t gonna matter either way, like surfing, this was Danny’s domain, not his.

The brand that had been seared into his skin was a constant reminder of the risk he had decided to take the day he had embraced his Druid heritage to help his friends. Danny knew that he could have left them to it, after all Jackson had moved to London and he hadn’t been that close to the others but once he had learned what was going on he had known that he’d had to follow them to Mystic Falls so he could help as much as he could. Doing that had put Riley back in his path once more and the truth was that the years he had spent in Mystic Falls with Riley and the others were the happiest of his life. Danny knew that he wouldn’t change it for anything in the world but seeing the pain that Riley was going through right now was enough to make Danny wish that he could save his boyfriend from what was to come. As Riley said he couldn’t move on, Danny brought his hand up and let it rest against his boyfriend’s cheek gently. “You don’t have to pack it away, it’s possible to love another but still carry me with you,” he said, his gaze fixed on Riley as he spoke. “I don’t know what comes after for Druids, I could end up on the Other Side or I could end up somewhere else entirely. If this does end up being the end of the line then I want to make sure that you’re taken care of. I don’t want you to end up alone if a future isn’t on the cards for us,” he said, his eyes pleading with Riley to understand. Danny knew that it wouldn’t be easy for him to move on but he knew that he didn’t want Riley to throw away a chance at happiness if it presented itself either. Just the thought of Riley being with someone else was enough to make his heart ache but Danny knew that if the worst happened and they couldn’t be together then he wanted Riley to experience everything that life had to offer, including finding love again. “I’m glad I have that affect on you,” Danny teased, a playful smile forming on his face as he looked over at Riley. He didn’t offer any resistance as Riley pulled him close once they were outside and Danny felt his smile turn gentle as Riley kissed his temple. It was the simple moments like these that he knew that he would always cherish most, the ones where they could just relax and be together. After the string of bad relationships he’d had in the past he honestly hadn’t thought that he would end up finding this but Riley was one of the good ones and Danny knew that nothing was going to change his mind about that. Danny wanted to make sure Riley was prepared in case things didn’t go the way they wanted them to but that didn’t mean that he was giving up, he would never do that since it would mean leaving behind Riley, his friends and his family. “They’ll deal with it, I’m sure they’ll understand,” Danny assured him. Right now it felt like they were living on borrowed time so Danny had a feeling that their friends wouldn’t begrudge them spending as much time together as they could. The drive to the Grill didn’t take long and Danny found himself holding onto Riley’s hand as much as he could on the way there. It was only a small point of contact but it was enough to remind Danny how lucky he was to have found someone who loved him as much as Riley did and he knew that he didn’t want to let go of that. He had to let go of Riley’s hand while they climbed out of the car but the moment Riley was by his side Danny found himself reaching for his hand once more. Riley’s suggestions were enough to have Danny pretend to consider each one for a moment before he shook his head. “Nah, I don’t think so,” he teased although the last one was something he knew that he would probably end up doing anyway. He’d ended up getting quite good at playing pool after all the practice he’d had but he knew that he really didn’t want to make Riley feel bad so going easy on him was something that Danny knew he would consider. “Sure,” he nodded, grabbing the triangle and putting the balls into position before taking the second cue and lining up a shot. Danny normally tried to sink a ball straight away but this time he put a little less power behind the strike and made sure that it was a little off centre to give Riley more of a chance. Danny might like to tease Riley about things like this but he knew that he wanted to make sure that Riley had as many good memories to hold onto as possible. RILEY PARKER

Riley almost shook his head again, swearing that he honestly couldn’t – not when that love had kept him going through the worst moments of his life, had brought him back from the other side – but it wasn’t fair, was it? Danny was asking him not to set his whole life aside after he passed. He wanted him to be happy, vowing that he couldn’t now was only going to be a weight on Danny when he didn’t need anything more to crush him. Tears burned in his eyes, but Riley caved and nodded, his fingers coming up to cover Danny’s, to squeeze lightly. ”Okay,” he breathed, taking a sniffling breath. ”No matter what happens, I’ll always have the pack. We’ll take care of each other and if we can … no argument from you … we’ll do what we can to try and bring you back, to take care of you too.” Because no matter what happened, Scott and his people didn’t ever give up the fight. All that they had gone through, all that they had done for him was proof of that.
He could’ve given into the tears that had flooded his eyes, anchored the two of them here with them to relieve all that pressure like a dam that had cracked. Danny deserved more than that though, in the time he had left – God, he hated even thinking about it – and managed to start drying those tears. Getting him laughing, teasing him until the lips that touched Danny’s temple were curved into a smile. ”Always,” he murmured. ”That’s what love does.” Thanks to all that had happened, that was what the two of them had. No matter what happened now, Riley knew he would carry that with him, a suit of armour gifted by those feelings and the strength of the man he loved. Finally drawing away to get into the car, Riley snorted. He lifted his hand to knuckle his nose, under his eyes. ”You have met Stiles right? He’s gonna be pouting for a week.” But he would understand. After everything that had happened with his best friend, with Lydia and in his own screwed up life, he’d get what these moments together could mean. And hey, maybe while he was sulking he’d work something out to stop this nightmare from coming true – he wouldn’t put it past Stiles to manage it.
Some of their friends might have already been at the Grill, but when they stepped inside, Riley didn’t see any of them there. The place was still busy when they walked in, but the table was clear, like the universe had conspired to give them the night together that Danny had wanted. Riley cursed under his breath, pouting for all of two seconds before he chuckled. ”I guess this is just gonna be the usual sort of contest then,” he murmured, letting out a mock sigh. At least it had gotten closer over time, he no longer failed to get a single ball in – except for the ones of Danny’s that he seemed to hit without fail when they’d first started playing. Eyes narrowed like he meant business, Riley hovered at the edge of the table. He wanted the way Danny played, the shift of muscle under tan skin as Danny lined up the shot. It failed to pot anything – oh, now he knew Danny was taking it easy on him. Riley bumped Danny’s hip good naturedly as he nudged him aside to line up his own shot. ”Cheater,” he accused softly. He drew in a slow breath, bent to aim and with some miracle sank a stripe at least. ”You got some magical powers I don’t know about yet?” he asked in a low voice, tugging Danny in for a kiss to celebrate. Danny’s best ones were the druid sort, of course, they were just him being a naturally amazing person.

Danny knew that what he was asking Riley for right now wasn’t going to be easy for him, Danny had faced a life without Riley before when Klaus killed him as a part of the ritual to free his werewolf side and it had broken him. Now here he was asking Riley to move on with his life if the worst happened. He knew that it perhaps wasn’t fair, the love they shared was something that he had never felt before and he was certain that he would never find it again so asking Riley to give up on that wasn’t something that Danny was taking lightly. He knew that Riley and their friends would do everything they could in order to bring him back just like he would do for them but the truth was that he had no idea what happened to Druids when they died, he didn’t know where they ended up or whether the curse would prevent him being brought back. There was so much right now that he didn’t know and he didn’t want Riley to waste his life if it wasn’t possible to bring him back. Danny wanted him to be happy more than anything so he knew that he needed to know that Riley was going to be okay. Eventually Riley nodded and straight away Danny felt like a weight had been lifted. “You won’t hear any arguments from me about that. If there is a way for me to come back then you know I want that,” Danny assured him gently. He wanted to have a future with Riley and his friends and he knew that he wasn’t going to stand in the way of them making sure that happened. “Thank you, it means a lot to know that you’ll be okay,” he added, a soft smile forming on his lips as he looked over at Riley. “You’re right about that,” Danny agreed as he brought his hand up and let his fingers trace lightly over Riley’s cheek. As he brought up Stiles, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “He can pout all he likes, I’m allowed to have some time alone with my boyfriend,” he chuckled. He really did love the pack and he knew that he wanted to spend as much time with them as he could but at the same time he knew that he needed some time alone with Riley as well. He might not know what was going to happen next but he knew that he didn’t want to find out full of regrets because he didn’t spend enough time with Riley. They had already been pulled apart once when Riley had returned home from his vacation in Hawaii and Danny had been left there so the last thing he wanted was to end up regretting the things they hadn’t done. Danny had always known there was a chance that some of their friends might have been at the Grill when they got there but he had trusted them to give the two of them the alone time that they wanted. Danny didn’t know how much time he had left before the curse caught up with him so for once he was doing things the way that he wanted to rather than the way that others wanted him to. He was still going about his life as normal, he could have dropped out of college and fled from Mystic Falls in favour of seeing the world but he hadn’t done. This life he had built with Riley and his friends was the one that he wanted and he had known that he wasn’t going to let anyone or anything take that away from him before his time came. “It is. You’re still going to lose but at least it will be fair game,” Danny teased, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his boyfriend’s cheek before taking his shot, making sure that he failed to pot any of the balls the first time around. Okay, so perhaps this wouldn’t be a completely fair game but it would at least be in Riley’s favour rather than his. “How is it cheating when I didn’t pot anything?” he challenged playfully as he stepped back to let Riley take his shot. As Riley sank a striped ball and asked if he had any magical powers Riley didn’t know about, a smile touched Danny’s lips as he kissed him back, not caring who saw them together like this. “I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve, you should know that by now.”RILEY PARKER

Fighting had never seemed to matter before, in that murky, twisting time before he’d picked Mystic Falls out on the map and had demanded that they go there. Digging in his heels about leaving New York every summer had just left a sullen silence in the car as they’d driven away. Telling his dad that he’d file emancipation papers and fly back to Hawaii on his own dime had just left him laughing. Every refusal had been batted aside so easily, until he’d been bitten. Maybe him finally lashing out was what had finally done it, but it wasn’t his reason this time. Danny was. Riley let out a long breath, his lips finally twitching into a smile, like the sun coming out from behind the storm clouds. ”We try until we run out of options,” he promised. And when they did – his heart felt like it twisted in his chest just at the thought, pain rolling through him – then he would force himself to rebuild, to at least be open to maybe allowing someone else in. It was a promise that would tear him apart, but by then there wouldn’t be much left anyway. He turned his head, pressing his lips into Danny’s palm. It would be mean a lot to him to know that they had Danny free of whatever had cursed his family, that was the future he’d work towards first. Together they’d already built more of a future than he’d ever expected to have. Once all of this was behind them, they’d have even more. Decades of happiness, of love. He’d remind Danny of it every day they were together, the words always tumbling easily off of his lips. Riley chuckled now, sniffing back the last of the tears as he pictured Stiles pouting that he’d been left out of it. He ran his hand up Danny’s arm, fingers squeezing his wrist lightly. ”I’m pretty sure Lydia will distract him from it soon enough.” Their friends had found their own happiness and if they were all lucky they’d get to keep it too. It didn’t mean that their lives were ever going to peaceful, but when they weren’t, even if they weren’t, they all had people to lean on and that was all that mattered.
Thankfully the Grill was clear of their friends tonight, giving the two of them the time alone that Danny had wanted. It meant that there wasn’t going to be anybody there to see his humiliation. He was pretty glad of that, even if he was still gonna act like it wouldn’t be a complete whitewash. ”Not fair,” Riley said with a grin, totally lying as he shook his head. ”Although when you fall in love with a natural athlete, you should get used to losing.” Only in those small, joking ways. When it came to the big things, he wasn’t going to. Propping the butt of his cue against the floor, Riley gripped it and hung his head, letting out a little groan before Danny made it easy for him. Straightening up now, Riley pointed a finger in Riley’s direction, eyes narrowed in censure. ”Because if you weren’t giving me a chance you probably would’ve potted half the table,” he snorted. He wasn’t that far wrong. Bending over the edge of the table, Riley squinted down the line of the cue, picturing the shot in his head. For once he managed to pot something, pride over it shining in his smile as he straightened back up to kiss his boyfriend. ”Is that a threat to start coming back already?” he asked, his brows hitching. ”Nah, this is the time I win. I’m sure of that now.” The words murmured against Danny’s lips were a promise, the shot he took after a second kiss for luck breaking it instantly. A stripe bouncing off the back right corner but missing the pocket by at least an inch.

For a long time Danny had had friends around him back in Beacon Hills but Jackson was the person that he was closest to. After he left and moved away to London Danny had had no choice but to branch out and fill that void and he liked to think that he hadn’t done too badly with that. He hadn’t been ready to accept what was going on in Beacon Hills until he learned the truth about his Druid heritage and started learning as much as he could about the supernatural world. He could have decided to stay in Beacon Hills and help out there but after learning that Allison was back but being possessed by a demon he had known that it was time for him to do more. He had known Scott, Stiles and the others of course but he hadn’t really taken the time to get to know them properly so he had thought that they might have turned him away but they hadn’t done and he was grateful to them for that. They had welcomed him into the pack and he had been reunited with Riley. Riley had been adamant that he would have made his way to Beacon Hills if Danny hadn’t moved to Mystic Falls but he knew that plans could change so Danny was glad that he hadn’t had to worry about them ending up in different places after all. Now there was a ticking clock hanging over their time together but Danny was doing his best to enjoy every moment with Riley that he could. “Of course we will,” Danny agreed, his voice gentle as he spoke. “I’ll fight to stay with you until my last breath.” There really wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that, he knew that he owed it to both of them to keep fighting for what they had and the future they both wanted even if it was futile. “Of course she will, Stiles can never focus on anything else for long while she’s around,” Danny chuckled. He knew that Stiles would probably end up acting upset that they had gone to the Grill without him but the truth was that as much as he loved his friends, it was time alone with Riley that Danny wanted right now. He knew that they were going to what might potentially be a crowded place but it was still going to just be the two of them and that was all Danny wanted right now. As they reached the Grill Danny’s gaze swept over the faces of the others there and he couldn’t see any of their friends. It was unusual but Danny knew that it was probably a good thing since their alone time would have been shattered if someone they knew was there. As it was the only person Danny needed to focus on right now was Riley and he really was glad about that. “You got that right. You’ve had six years to get used to it, what’s taking you so long?” Danny chuckled, his smile teasing as he looked over at Riley. It really was crazy to think that they had been together that long but he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. This was without a doubt the longest relationship he had ever been in and Danny knew that if he did get the chance to have a future once all of this was over then it was Riley that he wanted that with. Riley’s next words were enough to make Danny’s smile turn into a grin. “Maybe but it’s working in your favour that I didn’t so are you really going to argue?” he challenged, his eyes lingering on Riley for a moment as he moved to take his next shot before watching as he potted one of the balls. Kissing Riley back, Danny’s hand fell to his boyfriend’s waist as he pulled him close. “It might be, you’ll have to wait and see,” he teased before rolling his eyes playfully as Riley said he was sure he was going to win now. “What’s that you were saying about you winning this time?” he asked, his expression innocent as he moved to the table to take his shot. Riley had tried not to let himself focus solely on losing Danny after the brand had appeared and he’d learned what it meant. He knew that Danny was trying to make the most of the time he had and so he’d tried to do it too – not always successfully. The promise that Danny had wrung out of him was all about trying harder and he would, but it was a reassurance to hear that Danny didn’t plan to just lay down and let it happen now. He was the strongest person he’d ever known, giving everything to his friends and the pack, to him. When he told him now that he’d fight til his last breath to stay with him, Riley smiled, sealing that promise with a kiss that held all of his faith in their relationship, in the future they’d planned to have before this had come to hang over their heads. No matter how many generations of Danny’s family had died for this before, it would be different this time. They would break it.
Stiles had already put an insane amount of time into doing that. The guy’s focus was as scary as it was impressive. He might not’ve had any special abilities the way the rest of them did, but Stiles hadn’t let it stop him. Apparently that had impressed Lydia too in the end. The stories about how she’d been way out of his league had babbled out of Stiles’ mouth often enough. Riley hummed lightly, his eyes narrowing as he studied Danny’s face. ”I think I know how he feels. The minute I saw you … everything else just melted away.” And it could again even now, leaving the two of them alone in the centre of the most crowded room, safe in this little bubble of love they had for one another. Even Stiles couldn’t seen that, and realised that maybe it was time to give them a little space.
That wasn’t gonna be easy when the Grill had a tendency to rapidly grow busy, but for now they were alone at the pool table – all the better for him to lose in private. Riley clutched at his chest, mouthing an ouch as Danny took a jab. ”Hit a guy where it hurts, why don’t you,” he groaned. ”Call me an eternal optimist, I keep hoping it’ll change and one day I’ll be the one crowing.” He was grinning though, shaking his head at his boyfriend as it became apparent that Danny was going easy on him here. Riley pursed his lips and snorted again. ”Of course not, I’m not crazy.” It wouldn’t even take the shine off of his win all that much. It was just a stopping point on this ladder towards kicking his ass at something.
It'd been good while it had lasted. Riley sighed, clucking his tongue as Danny potted – he guessed the going easy on him portion of the game was over and done with already. Tucking his fingers into the waistband of Danny’s jeans, he anchored him there. ”Oh, I can already see,” he said with a smirk. ”The game’s on Mahealani.” He might’ve narrowed his eyes, tried to make it threatening, but it was like a puppy’s growl, totally harmless. ”I’m still gonna do it,” Riley sing-songed. The kiss was slow, tender, hopefully disarming, especially when he nudged Danny back, leaving him to go back to the table to take his shot. ”You wanna raise the stakes on this?” Sandy brows rose, the dare right there in his grin as he propped the end of the cue on the floor and leaned into it.

Danny knew that his friends wanted to spend time with him while they still could and he was grateful to them for that but the truth was that right now it was Riley that he wanted to focus on. Danny had never liked being the centre of attention, he had always been quite happy taking a backseat while Jackson had done that so he really was out of his comfort zone right now. He knew they were all trying to help him stay alive but Danny knew deep down that it wasn’t going to work so he knew that he wanted to make the most of whatever time he had. He knew that it perhaps wasn’t fair to ask Riley to promise to move on if the worst did happen but Danny knew that he wouldn’t be able to find peace knowing that Riley was going to keep holding on to him. He hadn’t had any warning when Riley had died, he had disappeared and they had all done their best to find him but when it happened it was all so quick. It wasn’t like that for Danny and in a way he knew that that was perhaps worse. He had been living with this for such a long time now and he hated the stress that it was putting on Riley and his friends more than anything else in the world. He knew that he would fight to stay with them all but that might end up being easier said than done. “I know what you mean, it was the same for me when I first saw you,” he admitted. That was why it had been so difficult saying goodbye to Riley back in Hawaii and Danny had honestly hoped that he would never have to do that again. Right now Danny knew that he just wanted to focus on the good things and that meant beating Riley at pool like usual. “You love me for it,” Danny teased, his expression turning playful as he looked over at Riley. As Riley spoke again, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “You keep believing that, pool has always been my thing,” he grinned. He had lost count of the amount of times that he and Jackson had ended up playing a game while they were out around Beacon Hills and Danny had become pretty good at it. It helped that he actually liked school and he was able to put some of what he’d learnt into practice. “It’s alright, there are other things you beat me at,” je added, hooking a finger under Riley’s chin and pressing a gentle kiss to his lips. They balanced each other out pretty well as far as Danny was concerned. “I thought you might say that,” he chuckled as Riley said he wasn’t going to argue because he wasn’t crazy. “Bring it on, Parker,” Danny grinned, his expression turning playful as his eyes met Riley’s. He knew that Riley was only messing around but he couldn’t resist playing along nonetheless. He could tell that Riley was trying to sound threatening but it didn’t come across that way at all and that made it all the more amusing as far as Danny was concerned. “Sure you are,” he chuckled as Riley said that he was still going to win. The kiss was one that Danny could easily let himself get lost in but he knew that he needed to focus on the game at hand and he got ready to take his next shot, sinking another ball just as Riley asked if he wanted to raise the stakes. “Are you sure you want to do that?” he teased, deliberately missing his next shot to give Riley another chance. “What have you got in mind?”RILEY PARKER
