In the aftermath With Joe Green Meredith felt like she had come to a stalemate. While one had been saved, the other slipped between her fingers. She looked up from her patient, having just stabilized them enough for transport to surgery to see the man coding out on the table. She watched, feeling a sense of helplessness as the team worked through the proper steps but she knew it was futile. She knew the moment he was rolled in that the odds were not in his favor.
And worst of all, she had nothing to give him.
Meredith's head dipped a little as they called the time of death. If only she had found a way to replace her empty supply of vampire blood the night could have ended so differently for the man. She took a deep breath, glancing back at her patient. She would make it after surgery but then she would need to be told that her husband didn't. That would be a painful conversation and one that Meredith would do her best not to fumble through.
For now, she stepped back to let the attendants wheel the woman towards elevator and towards the waiting surgical team. She then moved to the second team who had tried their best and placed her hand on the doctor's shoulder. "You did everything you could," she whispered. Hardly a solace but it had to be said.
After that, she filled out the paper work, officially signing off on another so called animal attack. Then she was changing out of her clothes and heading towards the exit. She stopped short when she caught sight of Joe Green, the paramedic who had brought one of the earlier attack victims in. She wondered if he had heard. She figured that he might want an update so she moved closer. "Hey Joe," she began, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. "Hell of a night, huh?"

| Losing a patient was something Joe really hated. He knew saving lives isn't always the case. He didn't know he was part of the supernatural, the harrier of death. The shift last night was the worst, blood was everywhere from his patient and he worked hard to keep him alive for the doctors. Cleaning the mess afterwards was the worst, Joe was always left with the clean up.
He was in the middle of washing the blood from the floor until he heard the doctor hello there he smiled and looked at her as he turned the water off. He didn't hear about his patient dying as he was hopeful he made it just cleaning the ambulance from the last job before another call came in. How is he doing by the way? he asked and waited to hear about the fate of his patient.

In the aftermath With Joe Green Meredith stood there for a moment, watching him soap away the remnants of his last call. She had never really considered that it was the paramedic that had to do that. The hospital had a cleaning staff who were discrete and respectful. Even now they would be heading towards the exam area where the man had bled out to wipe away the evidence. By the time she was seeing another patient there, the space would be clean and sterile.
And here was Joe washing his ambulance.
She wondered if that kind of thing ever weighed heavy on them. Probably. It would on her even though she was used to death at this point. It was one thing to watch a person die, it was another to be the one to wipe away on trace of them that was left. Maybe was being too philosophical. Maybe she was stuck in her own head, cursing herself for not being able to save the man.
Realizing Joe hadn't heard yet, she shook her head. "Sorry, Joe," she began, quietly. There was the same compassion in her voice that she held for anyone she had this conversation with. "His injuries were too grave. You did a damn good job getting him here but...it was too much for his body to handle." Not the outcome either of them wanted.

| Joe was sick of losing people. True this job he gets that but he thought of keeping someone alive from the scene to the hospital he believed there was a chance that this time he would win something he wanted and needed for a long time.
Washing the blood was the only way he knew to keep his mind busy and not think about stuff. The supernatural stuff was still a blar to him and he had no idea that his body was hosting a body of a hellhound spirit.
no please. I can't lose another one. I did my part, all you guys had to do is to keep him alive he punched the door of the ambulance as he was angry and frustrated that again he lost another. He was fed up with anyone dying on him now. I am sorry, I am just fed up with losing my patients. I have been losing more this month instead of saving lives. These animal attacks need to stop. Why can they kill this mountain lion, bear or wolf already. What are they waiting for? he was ranting as he got no clue it wasn't a wild animal at all.
Have the family been notified? he asked as brushed the bloody soapy water out of the ambulance as his next task be stock inventory check before going on the next call or go on lunch, whatever comes first as he can have hatic days or slow days.

In the aftermath With Joe Green Meredith was quiet as the information sank in. She felt his reaction. It was the same one she had only it was so often muted. It had to be. She couldn't afford to lose her cool in the emergency department. Instead she had to rage inside of her mind. She even took the subtle accusation that Joe flung in her direction in stride. High emotions made people say funny things.
"The damage was too much," she explained quietly. "You did everything you could and we did everything we could..." Only that wasn't true. If she had had vampire blood she would have given it to him. He would have made a miraculous recovery and she would be having a very different conversation with Joe. "I hate it. I hate that this happened. This is not what we come to work for."
At the mention of the so called animal attacks, Meredith averted her eyes. She hated being part of the lie. But on the other hand what was the alternative? Mass panic and people gunning for supernatural creatures that actually doing good in this world. She didn't want those people to suffer because others were afraid and lashing out.
"I know it's frustrating, Joe. I don't know if a mass culling of animals will make a difference," she told him quietly. She leaned against the side of the building as he went back to cleaning, not wanting to leave him alone for the time being. He was upset and rightfully so. "But I get where you are coming from --- you feel so helpless and you just want to do something. Maybe we can talk to town council and see if better protections can be put in place." Maybe that town council needed to hear that the animal storyline was becoming less and less believable. Maybe they needed to realize people are starting to 'wake up'. What they did beyond that was up to them.
"We are working on finding any extended family to know but the ambulance that came in behind you --- that was his wife. She is going into surgery right now." She took a deep breath. "She was in no condition to learn what had happened. I dread telling her." But she would. Just as she had done many times before.

| Losing patients was something that Joe hated. He knew that he wasn't able to save everyone since it was part of life. You live and then you die. It happens. But when he sees young people, who still had everything to live for, upsets and annoys him the most. He wanted to stop the dying, but he felt so powerless to do it.
I don't believe in killing anything. But if an animal comes to the town and begins to attack people it needs to be stopped. I just get tired of losing my patients. Especially when they are young and have a lot more to live for he felt so defeated and sat down at the edge of the ambulance which have dried out from the washing
The hound inside was too restless and would roam in the night looking for the source of the killings, and if it was supernatural it would find it. Joe focused back when he heard about the wife. He really didn't want to be in the doctor's shoes right now. Maybe he could have done something differently. Maybe he got him to the hospital sooner. There was so many 'maybes' and there was no proof the outcome would have been differently
I didn't know he was married or there was another victim. I just loaded him up and got here. But it seems I wasn't fast enough. Maybe if I was then the outcome would have been different he signed softly and kept his head down to the floor blaming himself

In the aftermath With Joe Green This was really affecting him and she got it, death was never easy, especially when your job was to ensure that the opposite happened. She remembered the first few times she had lost someone. It gutted her, made her question if she had done everything correctly, made her question if she should be a doctor at all. It was her mentor who had told her that she couldn't let it weigh her down. If she did, she would never make it in the medical field. It wasn't that she had to let death pass her by without acknowledging the loss but instead she had to make her peace with each one. It sounded as if he had to learn to do the same.
"I get it, I do," she began, leaning against the wall opposite the open ambulance doors. She wasn't going to leave him in this state. With her patient heading into surgery, she was going to stick close to the hospital despite her shift being done in a few minutes. She just wanted to be sure that at least one of the two made it through this horrific ordeal. Since she couldn't help inside anymore, she was better off sticking it out with Joe, making him realize that he couldn't blame himself. "The town has tried to find ways to combat this sort of thing. They are not taking it lying down, I promise you." She knew that because she had insider information from the council. Not the one most townspeople knew --- this one knew the real score and were trying to counteract it. But somehow she didn't think that telling him about preventative measures when it came to vampires was going to do any good.
"You did everything you could. You did the right thing. You got him here as fast as you could, ensured that he was alive when he arrived --- it's just sometimes, the damage is too much," she trailed off and then reached out to touch his shoulder. "You can't blame yourself, Joe. Doing so is only going to drag you down to a place you don't need to be."

| Joe couldn't help but feel this way. He lost too many of his patients to save them, he felt so lost and angry that it was his ambulance every single time. He thought this one was going to break the deaths but it didn't. It kept going more and more. He is already feeling stressed from having strange dreams, and he wakes up completely nude even though he didn't the night before. His head was aching right due to the lack of good sleep and the stress he was feeling right now.
I knew this job was going to be tough and you can't save everyone. But I lost everyone in my ambulance more than I am saving. When I saw he was still alive I thought he finally broke the curse which was haunting my ambulance. But now it didn't happen, it was just another death. I lost count on how many I lost he slammed the doors hard, as he still had the frustration there deeply.
Due to his lack of good night sleep he was getting exhausted. He felt a little dizzy and shook his head to try and shake off the dizziness I better get back on the road he walked to the door like he was drunk, he was about to open the door before the dizziness strike hard and he collapse onto the floor passed out completely

In the aftermath With Joe Green Here was where she wished that she could just tell him the truth. Tell him that it was not his fault that so many people died in this town. No matter how good they were at their job, no matter how hard they tried, they were still up against a supernatural force and fighting on uneven ground. It was hardly fair odds.
But like always, she kept her mouth shut (the dutiful little Fell that she was).
When he signaled that he was about to head back out, Meredith shook her head. "Wait, Joe, I don't think that is a good idea. Why don't you come in for a bit? Clear your head and have a cup of coffee or something?" He needed more time to wrap his head around what had happened. Driving while emotionally compromised was not safe for him or anyone else he met on the road.
Meredith frowned when he began to walk, the doctor in her not liking his shaky steps. "Joe?" she questioned and before she could get an idea of what was going on, he was down for the count. "Joe!" She was by his side immediately, quickly checking his vitals before turning his head towards the closed door of the hospital. Good thing her mother had given her a voice that was loud and clear. "I need a little help out here!"
Before long two nurses arrived and the three of them were able to move Joe onto a stretcher. She took position at his head as they began to roll him to a waiting emergency room. "Joe, can you here me? It's Meredith. I need you to open your eyes, okay."

| Joe was completely out for the count. He was drained emotionally as well as physically, he had no energy left for his shift. He was still able to hear things but his body didn't want to respond to the trauma he just had 'I don't want to wake up again, I don't want to hear another death on my part again' he whispered lightly. Joe didn't know how long he was out for but he was hearing Meredith voice and he couldn't stay in this space anymore, he had to wake up and he started to blinked few times and looked directly at the ceiling before he heard her voice again and redirected back to her location
"What happened?" he didn't always remember what happened after he passed out. Of course being a typical man he started to try and sit up even though his body was still a bit dizzy and he needed to rest properly, not like previously having a few days of naps. "I am fine, I just need rest which is hard with the long hours. I guess the news from losing the patient I just became overwhelmed. I am sorry for scaring you" he didn't mean to scare her, but he wanted to get off the stretcher

In the aftermath With Joe Green It took her a moment to get over the initial shock of watching him crumble in the ambulance bay but eventually, she was all professional. She pushed back the nerves (and yes, the fear of seeing a colleague as a patient) and went into doctor mode. Her eyes roamed over him for any obvious signs of the cause but she knew that most of the time, it was something within that usually broke a normally healthy man to his knees.
She was just about to order a line inserted when his eyes fluttered open and she nearly breathed a sigh of relief. Meredith found herself looking intently at his pupils to check their dilation. They seemed a bit sluggish but reacting to the bright lights of the examination room. That was a good sign.
Meredith frowned as he already tried to take his leave of the situation. "I don't think so," she began, gently placing a hand on his chest to push him back to the stretcher. "It might be like you say --- exhaustion. What have you eaten today? Drank? You might be hungry or dehydrated too. We'll start an IV fluid drip just in case. It certainly won't hurt you." She nodded to a nurse who went off to fulfill her order. She then looked back to Joe, her face all business.
"Because yes, you did scare me and the consequences of that is letting me be sure it is not anything serious. You don't get to argue with me either, Joe Green. Very few people win," she pointed out with a raise of her eyebrow. That was just how she operated. She meant business.

| Joe didn't plan on becoming a patient. He wanted to avoid this but him overreacting to the news of his patient dying on him really took a strain on his body. The fact he wasn't sleeping well was another reason he was exhausted. But he was a stubborn man and didn't eat when he should, often skipping meals putting others' needs before his own. So when he was forced to lie down he had no energy to fight back otherwise he would have protested against this.
I don't have time to eat anything. My patient needs come before my own, it would always be this way. I can't change this requirement now. he yawned a little even though he was hiding the fact he hadn't slept for god knows how long since he last had a good night's sleep. He was having very strange nightmares and he didn't know what was causing them, it was nearly the same too, which was even more confusing as well, he didn't know why he was dreaming about these things. Was the dream trying to tell him something more? Was the dream warning him about something that was going to happen? he didn't know or what to know for that matter. He just hope they were just very bad nightmares and that's it
Seriously I am fine I don't need an IV line.it would be a waste of the resources and I am not happy with paying for treatment that's not necessary he was too stubborn and would keep up with it. She might think she can win but she hasn't gone against him yet. just bring me a bottle of water, that much cheaper than a saline solution through the vein which you wanted to do he suggested as he kept the eye contact and not even blinking.
not many people beat me either. I didn't mean to scare you. That wasn't my intention, I just got over emotional from the news and the fact I have lost more people than saved. Seeing that kept him alive I figured I would have won, when I heard he died I just let the pent up anger all out and I drained myself into complete exhaustion he yawned again showing it was more than not eating enough. More like lack of sleep

In the aftermath With Joe Green "Well, you are making time now. Because as soon as I put you on this bed, you became my patient. And like you said, patient needs come first. Which means you about to have something to eat," she told him, her tone forceful. Joe might want to argue with her but it was an argument he was destined to lose. He cared about his patients, she got that. She even admired that. She cared about her patients too --- and right now he was one of them.
But that didn't mean she wouldn't negotiate.
"Fine, no saline drip. For now," she added on the end, to show that her reprieve was conditional. She still doubted that he wanted to play nice but if she was going to bend a little, than he would too. "You'll get a bottle of water and some food. Once you have eaten that I will reassess and then sign off on your release if your vitals are good." He was tired too but she figured suggesting he get some sleep was out of the question for now. She would bridge that topic after she got the most pressing needs out of the way.
"And I hate to do this but you can't continue on your ambulance in this state. So you're better off listening to my advice rather than arguing. You know better than me that you can't serve your patients the way you want to in your current state. You want to do well by them? Do well by yourself first." Hopefully appealing to his need to help others would convince him to stop protesting and instead compel him to actually look after himself.

| Joe hated being a patient himself. It was normal though as he heard medical staff were the worst patients to treat. He signed and just looked at the ceiling. He wasn't an aggressive or argumentative person either. He knew he was too weak to do anything, and if he was allowed to leave he could crash and kill someone himself, he didn't want to do that. Fine my food is my bag in the locker room he said to her, which he only had apple and orange, it was the only food he brought, even though it wasn't enough to keep him full and he wouldn't eat when he got home as he just go straight to bed for sleep
Joe knew he would win the saline thing as he would just pull it out anyway. He was sneaky with those things. I am fine, it is no big deal. Send me home if I can't do the work. It is more comfortable at home as these beds are very uncomfortable he was being that typical grumpy patient right now, showing how much of a fuss he can give her and pushing to see how far he can go. well my food and water is in my locker go and get it, unless you letting me get it he said attempted to get up
I haven't really saved anyone since. So I am not a good paramedic. Everything I tried failed. I have lost more people than saved. So I can't relax, I want to know what I am doing wrong. I try to get them here as fast as possible and still they die. Just why he asked her while he swung his legs towards the age to try and get back up, again to see how far he could go to push her

In the aftermath With Joe Green Meredith knew he hated every second of this, even if she was only trying to help him in the end. She doubted he would be willing to concede that particular thought. She wouldn't take it personally (okay, she would take it a little bit personally but she would get over it). "I will make sure that someone grabs your lunch," she said, as she glanced over her shoulder at the nurse who had helped her in the immediate aftermath of his loss of consciousness. "But if it is anything like mine, aka lacking the nutrients I want for you, I will send for something from the cafeteria." She crossed both arms as she watched him begin to move around. She stood her ground, keeping him in her sights. "I bet you thought I would go grab your lunch so you could make a clean escape, huh? You forget that I am also medical staff. I know how much we hate being the patient but I am just looking out for you, Joe. It's nothing personal..." She then rethought that. "Actually, it is everything personal because I am also your friend. I care about your wellbeing."
She knew that this whole day was wearing him down. She understood why. Losing a patient was not easy, especially if it was on the heels of another loss. She had days like that and they stayed with you. Maybe they were all compiling together for him too and it was becoming too much for him to consider.
Meredith pulled the stool from the corner of the exam room and sat down on it, determined to play sentry while he ate. "You're staying here until I discharge you. Which will be after you eat and I check your vitals again," she reminded him. "And until that moment, I want you to hear something. You're a good paramedic. You are. I know you don't want to consider that right now because you're hurting from the loss. I get that. How could I not? But I wouldn't lie to you about what you do. You help more than you realize. It's just too bad that those don't stick out in your mind like the losses do."
